Research Assistant

The Maine Math & Science Alliance (MMSA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that finds inspiring new ways to get people excited about science, technology, engineering and mathematics today, so that our youth can become the innovators and workforce of tomorrow. MMSA supports educators by:

Purpose of the Position :

The Research Assistant will support grant-funded projects as an essential team member. This person will provide support to projects by assisting with data collection instrument development (e.g., surveys, interview protocols), data collection activities (e.g., distributing surveys, conducting interviews), data management, and data analysis.

The Research Assistant will work closely with research and evaluation projects as needed across MMSA’s work in STEM education. Three current projects will likely comprise the initial portfolio of work. STEM Workforce Ready 2030 supports schools and educators statewide in integrating CS/CT into their curricula. The Rural Energy Futures program facilitates community understanding of energy transition opportunities through middle-school math skills development, high school place-based science learning experiences, and high school out-of-school time leadership opportunities for young women. Teach ME Outside is a collaborative project that supports and works in partnership with Maine communities to ensure that all Maine youth have access to powerful, hands-on environmental learning opportunities.

The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, flexibility to adapt to educator and project needs, an ability to work independently and ask clarifying questions, and a demonstrated ability to manage qualitative and quantitative data. This position will be expected to work from the MMSA office in Augusta at least one day per month and will be expected to travel occasionally (including rare overnights) at locations elsewhere in Maine (with travel expenses paid by MMSA). The ideal start date is November 1, 2024.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and manipulate databases and spreadsheets.
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative data analyses.
  • Capacity to listen carefully and ask clarifying questions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to think analytically and with attention to detail.
  • Capable of working independently and remotely.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to shift priorities and tasks to be responsive to the needs of projects and educators.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with MMSA staff to refine appropriate data-collection tools.
  • Maintain data-collection tools and instruments.
  • Maintain project data storage and documentation systems.
  • Collect, enter, clean, and code various forms of data.
  • Maintain quality controls standards to preserve the integrity of data and findings.
  • Conduct interviews and focus groups with educators, students, and business leaders.
  • Travel across Maine for school site visits and observations.
  • Take detailed notes and ask clarifying questions where needed.
  • Write and edit reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

  • Experience working with qualitative and/or quantitative datasets.
  • Experience in STEM education and/or STEM education research and evaluation.
  • Experience communicating with various populations including educators, students, business leaders, community members, etc. and creating a comfortable environment to capture their thoughts, ideas, and feedback.
  • Demonstrated organization and documentation skills.
  • Ability to learn new qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, and storage tools (SurveyMonkey, Dedoose, etc.).
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to evolving needs of educators and projects across multiple initiatives.
  • Ability to work in a telecommuting-based team with a wide range of personalities and interests.
  • Willingness to travel across the state of Maine for data collection activities.

Typical hiring range for this soft-money funded position is $48,000 to $55,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Postdoctoral Research Associates – Multiple Disciplines – Up to 20 Positions for the Advanced Structures and Composites Center

The purpose of these positions is to support, plan, and conduct assigned and original research encompassing the R&D programs at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center, while working collaboratively with faculty, staff, as well as graduate and undergraduate students at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center, and the UMaine academic departments. Postdoctoral Research Associate appointments at the University of Maine are for a limited duration and must include an educational component. University policy requires that a University of Maine faculty member be identified as a mentor and that specific guidelines be met. The purpose of the postdoctoral appointment is to further prepare an individual who was recently awarded a doctorate to undertake the responsibilities of a career in research. Program Coordinator – Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for the Center on Aging

The Program Coordinator is a member of a two-person RSVP professional staff which facilitates volunteerism for those who are 55 or over in Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Washington Counties. This is accomplished by building collaborations with non-profit and governmental organizations, the recruitment, enrollment and training of volunteers, as well as supporting currently enrolled volunteers. Duties include assisting the director with Corporation for National & Community Service compliance requirements, data analysis, designing and administering program evaluation, and on-going site visits to established and prospective RSVP sites. Typical hiring salary for this part-time, 20 hours/week, soft-money funded position is $18,540 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Research Administration Policy Officer for the Office of Research Administration

This position supports the research community in the development and dissemination of policy, procedures and guidance that comply with federal, state and sponsor regulations related to research administration. This position requires working collaboratively and strategically with other campus administrative offices and stakeholders to develop, implement, and enhance research administration compliance efforts. Typical hiring range for this position is $68,000 to $76,774 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Research Associate II for the Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies

The primary purpose of this position is to research, develop, plan, and provide consultation/technical assistance, professional development, and community education related to community-based services and supports for children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities. The employee is also required to participate in materials and grant development as well as project dissemination and evaluation activities. Typical hiring range for this soft-money funded position is $45,151 to $58,053 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Research Compliance Officer I or II for the Office of Research Compliance

The Research Compliance Officer assists in the development and implementation of research compliance programs to ensure compliance with required protocols, regulations, and laws — primarily with human or animal research — including federally-mandated agency program requirements. The rank of the position will be determined based on the finalist’s qualifications and experience. Typical hiring range for this position is: Research Compliance Officer I: $44,000 to $52,000; Research Compliance Officer II: $52,000 – $57,000.

Research Facilities Operations Specialist for Coordinated Operating Research Entities

To support the operational aspects of research facilities that are associated with research and development activities in CORE and FIRST, including the Microfabrication Cleanroom Facility and associated synthesis, fabrication, and characterization facilities. The responsibilities will include development and refinement of fabrication processes and characterization techniques within the facilities, as well as operation and maintenance of a broad range of equipment in these areas. This position also provides expertise and training to users of the CORE Microfabrication Cleanroom and associated FIRST facilities. Typical hiring range for this position is $51,183 to $70,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Safety and Training Manager for the Advanced Structures and Composites Center

The purpose of this position is to oversee all safety at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center. This includes supervisory responsibility for staff and students in the laboratory. Typical hiring range for this soft-money funded position is $44,507 to $74,177 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Sea Grant Professional I/Marine Extension Associate – Aquaculture HUB Coordinator for Sea Grant

The Sea Grant Professional I will work with members of the MET, the Hub Steering committee, and collaborators.
