While the Google Photos app does make an easy slideshow, there aren’t any extra features. For example, you can’t add music or edit the photos after you create a slideshow. You also can’t change the transition time. Some users also have a hard time finding this feature, as Google Photos calls it a ’Movie’ and not a slideshow. However, If you want a simple slideshow you can broadcast on a Chrome-supported device, consider using Google Photos.

'What is Keynote on iPhone?': How to use the Keynote app on your iPhone to make slideshow presentations on the go

  • Keynote is a presentation-creation app for your iPhone that can be used by students, professionals, and anyone who needs to make a slideshow.
  • The Keynote app comes preloaded on your iPhone , and can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store if you delete it.
  • Those familiar with Microsoft's PowerPoint program will quickly pick up on the value and the ease of using the iPhone's Keynote app.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

To Microsoft Word, you have Apple's Pages. To Microsoft's Excel, you have Apple's Numbers. And for PowerPoint, the Apple counterpart is Keynote, the presentation app that comes preloaded on your iPhone (and is free from the App Store if you deleted it).

Keynote is a presentation-design program perfect for everything from a report you're giving in school, to a proposal you want to share with your colleagues at the office. And once you spend some time with Keynote, you'll realize it's really not that hard to use.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Iphone 11 (from $699.99 at best buy), how to use keynote on your iphone.

To create a new Keynote project, open the Keynote app , which is a blue box with a white image of a lectern inside it.

Tap the "Create Presentation" icon — it's the plus (+) symbol in the top-right — then select the theme you wish to use. You can always use your own images in the slides, so don't be thrown off by the stock images.

Once inside the new project, double-tap in the various boxes on the first slide to add text or media. You can simply begin typing after double tapping, or hit the plus symbol at the top to add images, graphs, video, audio, drawings, and more.

To add a new slide, hit the plus symbol in a blue box at the bottom left corner of the screen. Slides can always be dragged into new order by tapping, holding, and moving them up or down in the pane on the left.

To add transitions between your slides (and alter various other settings) tap the three little dots in a circle in the top-right corner and select "Transitions and Builds." Then tap the slide to which you want to add a transition, tap "Add Transition," and then make your selection.

Using Keynote can be a collaborative process; just hit the "Add People" button at the top of the screen (it looks like a silhouette of a stick figure's head and shoulders in a circle), and invite others to work with you.

Once you're happy with your Keynote presentation, it's time to export it. Tap those three dots at the top-right and select "Export." You can then choose the type of file you'd like to create, which can then be shared with others, saved to your phone, sent to Google Drive, and so on.

How to Set Up a Presentation Using Your iPhone or iPad

You can connect your iOS device to an external display for work presentations and streaming.

author image

Table of Contents

These days, we’re more reliant than ever on mobile devices for productivity and connectivity, even in work scenarios like conferences and seminars. It’s easy and convenient to power your presentations with an iPhone or iPad, but you might not know how to connect to an external display.

We’ll explain how to mirror a small screen to a more prominent display such as a smart TV, projector or monitor, whether you’re prepping for a presentation in a smart office or streaming content at home.

How to give presentations from your iPhone or iPad

Bring your mobile presentation to life by connecting your iOS device to an external display. Several technologies can power mobile presentations on a larger screen, including AirPlay, which allows streaming and screen mirroring.

We’ll explain how sending your presentation to an external display works for the most common devices you’ll encounter.

1. Send an iOS presentation to an Apple TV.

Mirroring your presentation from an iPad or iPhone to an Apple TV is straightforward. Here’s how it works:

  • Power on your Apple TV. Make sure it’s on the same Wi-Fi network as your iOS device.
  • On your iOS device, load the presentation or content you want to share to the Apple TV.
  • Tap the AirPlay icon . (It looks like a rectangular screen with a triangle at the bottom.)
  • Choose your Apple TV .
  • Your content will begin. To stop streaming, tap the AirPlay icon in the app you’re streaming from.

2. Send an iOS presentation to a smart TV.

If you have an internet-enabled smart TV, you have a few options, depending on your TV model.

AirPlay 2-compatible smart TVs

If you have an AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV, such as select Samsung models, LG TVs and Roku TVs, the process is nearly the same as using AirPlay with an Apple TV:

  • On your AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV, go to Settings > General > Apple AirPlay Settings and enable AirPlay .
  • Tap the AirPlay icon .
  • Select your AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV.
  • Play your presentation or content.

Smart TVs that aren’t AirPlay 2-compatible

If your internet-connected smart TV isn’t AirPlay compatible, consider a third-party mirroring app like AllCast. AllCast is an iOS app that wirelessly streams your phone’s content to an external monitor. Here’s how it works:

  • Download AllCast from the App Store on your iOS device.
  • Launch AllCast and tap the broadcast icon . It will find compatible devices on your network.
  • Select your smart TV.

AllCast is also compatible with Roku devices, Amazon Fire TV devices, Apple TV, Microsoft Xbox consoles, and smart TVs from Samsung, Sony, Panasonic and more. While AllCast is free to download and use, in-app purchases allow you to remove ads and unlock features.

3. Send an iOS presentation to a Mac.

If you want to send your iOS presentation to a larger Mac, the process is simple.

  • Make sure your iOS device and Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • On your iOS device, open the Control Center.
  • Tap Screen Mirroring .
  • Select your Mac.
  • You may see an AirPlay passcode on your Mac screen. If so, enter the code on your iOS device.

4. Send an iOS presentation to a non-smart TV or projector.

Working with an old-school TV or a projector that doesn’t connect to the internet? Not a problem. Use a connector or adapter to achieve the same effect as mirroring.

Connect to a monitor with an adapter.

If you have access to a monitor and you don’t want to connect wirelessly, opt for an old-fashioned cable adapter. Apple sells a Lightning digital AV adapter with an additional power port (so you can charge your iPhone or iPad while you present from it).

At $49, Apple’s adapter is pricey for a one-off presentation, but if you travel a lot, the purchase could be worthwhile. Using Wi-Fi across various venues can be a gamble. If you’re presenting to clients, you may not want to roll the dice.

Connect to a projector with an adapter.

Many modern projectors have proprietary apps to connect to wirelessly from mobile devices, but they vary drastically in quality, availability and compatibility. If you want to be certain of your ability to connect to a specific projector, an adapter is an excellent option.

Newer projectors typically have HDMI and VGA ports. If you have a choice, opt for an HDMI adapter because it’ll be more versatile. If you need to connect to an older projector, you will probably have to connect using a VGA adapter; Apple sells one (also priced at $49) with an added charging port, so you don’t run out of juice.

FAQs about sending an iOS presentation to an external display

If you’re having trouble connecting your iPad or iPhone to a monitor or have other questions about creating a great presentation, you’ll find commonly asked questions below.

What is screen mirroring?

Screen mirroring is the process of displaying the contents of a device like an iPad or iPhone on another device, such as a television, external monitor or projector. Screen mirroring is sometimes confused with screencasting, which is the process of recording everything happening on your screen.

Why do people use screen mirroring?

Screen mirroring is helpful anytime you want to share small-screen content on a big screen. People use screen mirroring in both personal and professional settings, including watching entertainment and running through presentations.

Can you screen mirror without Wi-Fi?

The only way to screen mirror without Wi-Fi is to use a cable connection or adapter. Screen mirroring apps won’t work if you can’t access Wi-Fi. In fact, if you’re using a screen mirroring app, the device you’re mirroring from and the device you’re mirroring to have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

One significant benefit of buying an HDMI adapter is that you no longer need to worry about Wi-Fi access when mirroring – you can plug in the cord and get started.

What are the best iPad apps for creating presentations?

There are many excellent presentation tools for all platforms. Keynote  is Apple’s answer to PowerPoint, and it’s a go-to among professionals who use Apple devices because it’s a free download from the App Store. You can also use PowerPoint on Apple devices via the PowerPoint mobile app. If you want to try something different,  Google Slides  is the current black horse in the presentation software arena, and it’s also available through Apple’s App Store.

Do I need an adapter to connect my iPad to my TV?

If you have Apple mobile devices and want to share content with a broader audience, an adapter is an excellent option. An adapter’s main advantage is allowing you to connect to nearly any external monitor. Adapters are helpful for people who want to mirror to an older TV or monitor without internet connectivity, as well as anyone who frequently hosts presentations in places without open Wi-Fi networks or smart monitors.

Can you screen mirror with an Android device?

Yes. Android and iOS both support business uses , such as screen mirroring for presentations. You can mirror your Android, PC or Google device on an external screen or projector with a built-in app, Bluetooth, a third-party app or an HDMI adapter. If you go down the app and Bluetooth route, ensure that your mobile device and the external monitor are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

How-To Geek

Virtual powerpoint presentations don't have to be boring: 7 ways keep people engaged.

Don't create "just another" virtual PowerPoint. Entertain your audience with an engaging presentation.

Quick Links

Add interactive in-slide features, embed your webcam, choose your layout carefully, limit your animations, use live chat (and have a moderator), pre-record your presentation, have a backup plan.

With online conferencing the twenty-first-century norm, you might find yourself creating and presenting a virtual PowerPoint presentation. You may well be used to delivering a slideshow to a live audience, but you can face a completely different set of challenges when doing this online.

The biggest difference between in-person and virtual presentations is that you're less likely to be able to read people's body language or glean verbal feedback when presenting online, so it can be more difficult to adjust your tone or pace accordingly. Your audience might also be more easily distracted by the dog barking in the background or a child running through the room, so you have to use methods that are more likely to keep your audience engaged.

As someone who led a school's English Department through the pandemic, I'm all too used to staring at my camera in the hope that my colleagues haven't zoned out, so I'd like to share some tried and tested ways to make virtual PowerPoint presentations at least a little more gripping.

One way to engage your virtual audience is to get them to interact directly with your PowerPoint presentation . Two examples that work for me are adding a QR code and including a countdown timer.

QR codes are a great way to direct your audience to a website or quiz. On Microsoft Edge, right-click anywhere on a web page where there isn't already a link, and left-click "Create QR Code For this Page." You can then copy or download the code to wherever you like in your presentation.

The How-To Geek homepage containing a circle depicting a right-click in a blank space on the web page, and 'Create QR Code For This Page' selected in the menu that appears.

People like using their phones, so even if you can't see your audience, it's a safe bet that as soon as you direct them to scan a QR code with their camera, they'll engage straightaway. If the QR code directs people to a quiz-building website, such as Google Forms or SurveyMonkey, you can use this as a way to check if your audience has been listening!

Countdown Timer

In any situation, it's human nature to feel the pressure of a countdown timer. Countdown timers are a really effective way to maintain your audience's attention , as people will naturally keep checking back in with your PowerPoint slide to see how long they have left to do whatever you've tasked them to do. They're also a handy way to let your audience know when you plan to move on to the next slide in your presentation, serving as a clear boundary marker.

To create a countdown timer, you need to add the Disappear animation to text boxes or shapes containing your countdown numbers , adjusting the timing to one second for each.

A PowerPoint presentation with the Animation Pane open and 'Timing' selected on the first item.

Another reason a virtual audience might be less engaged is that, to them, seeing the presenter and their expressions is as important as reading the content of the slides. PowerPoint recognizes this, which is why they have the Cameo tool that lets you embed your webcam into your slideshow .

Providing you or your organization are subscribed to Microsoft 365, using Cameo is very straightforward. Simply type Cameo into your PowerPoint search box at the top of your window, and choose from the options there. To keep your webcam visible throughout your presentation, click "All Slides."

Microsoft PowerPoint open with Cameo typed into the search box and 'All Slides' highlighted in the options that appear.

If you go down this route, make sure you avoid placing a prominent light directly behind you (otherwise, you'll just appear as a silhouette!), and make a conscious effort to repeatedly look at your camera directly as often as you can.

If you are creating an in-person PowerPoint presentation that will be beamed onto a large projector screen, you can afford to have smaller fonts and more writing on your slides. However, when you're running a virtual presentation, it's worth remembering that some people may well be viewing it on a mobile device with a small screen.

As a result, if you have lots of diminutive text on your slides, you're more likely to frustrate and, ultimately, disengage your audience. As a rule of thumb, I try to avoid using anything smaller than a size-40 font in a virtual presentation, and I also make every effort to have no more than four lines of text on each slide.

As well as adapting your layout to suit the virtual setting, also consider reducing the number of fancy animations in your slideshow.

As you're streaming your presentation over the internet, you can't rely on your viewers to have a strong connection and a decent device. An animation that appears to last a second on your screen can be jumpy and take longer on someone else's, resulting in a laggy presentation that looks unprofessional.

Regardless of whether you're presenting in-person or online, it's always a good idea to reduce the number and variety of animations you use in PowerPoint. That's not to say you shouldn't use any animations at all—after all, you are trying to keep your viewers engaged—but sticking to the Fade entrance animation will help you to make sure your presentation isn't a visual overload for your audience, doesn't experience jumpiness, and looks professional.

One of the most frustrating barriers to a successful virtual presentation is having people interrupt each other—not least when people try to jump in over you , the presenter. Similarly, that annoying two-second delay often causes awkward and unwanted speech overlaps.

Most videoconferencing platforms, including Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, let you stream your PowerPoint presentation within the call and have a live-chat facility at the same time, and you can make use of this feature so that your session runs as smoothly as possible.

When creating your PowerPoint presentation, plan in some time for you to address written comments that your audience is adding to the live chat as you present.

A PowerPoint slide containing the title 'Question time,' and some text underneath: 'Let's pause for a few minutes, so that I can answer some of the questions you've added to the chat box.'

By doing this, you're giving your viewers the opportunity to ask questions, something that is often lost in virtual presentations, while also helping yourself to stay focused and finish whichever segment of your slideshow you are currently presenting.

Even better, if you are able to recruit a moderator, they can answer the typed questions for you within the chat as the presentation is ongoing, so you can just focus on giving an excellent presentation.

Are you presenting a particularly difficult topic? Or is it that you're simply not the most confident of presenters? One way to overcome these potential pitfalls is to pre-record either your whole presentation or even just the more complicated parts.

To do this, click "Record" in the top-right corner of your window, and when you finish, your slides and voiceover will be saved as an MP4.

A PowerPoint slide with the Record button indicated by an arrow.

You can then play the video or videos of your presentation during your video conference, pausing when necessary to answer any questions or elaborate on one of your points. Using this method will mean you can rehearse and perfect your slideshow, keeping your viewers engaged as a result.

We at How-To Geek know all too well about the unreliability of technology, and things always seem to go wrong at the most inconvenient moments. Even if you have perfected your PowerPoint layout and rehearsed its content to death, you should always have a backup plan in case things go awry.

Before your meeting begins, send the PowerPoint file to your viewers, and print off a copy of the slides for you to have by your side. This way, if your PowerPoint glitches for any reason, you can instruct your audience to open their copy of the presentation, and you have your notes ready to go so you can carry on from where you left off.

PowerPoint's printing options, with the number of slides per page option highlighted.

Many people make the same mistakes in their PowerPoint presentations, regardless of whether they're designed for a virtual or in-person meeting. Make sure you check out our top tips to avoid making these mistakes and impress your audience with the perfect slideshow.

Best file storage app created

Let me start by saying that I have never attempted to use another file storage system long term. Mainly because nothing could compare to Drive. I practically grew up on Google, so I just knew it and automatically used Google Drive. Everything else I’ve tried honestly was nothing to Google. I would recommend this 100%. I find nothing wrong with it except for one small thing that was not near frustrating enough to make me remove a star. This issue is the fact that we can’t edit directly through Drive on iOS mobile devices (and I’m not sure about Samsung or Chrome mobile devices). If it could be arranged to where we on mobile devices could edit files directly through the Drive app and not through branch apps like Slides, Docs, and Sheets, that would be greatly appreciated. If not, I’m sure there are reasons and it will not be too big a deal for me. As for the recommendations part of the review, I would say to anyone considering using Google Drive: DO IT. You will not regret. It’s easy to use, free, and includes every option you might need for editing and collaboration. So, yes. I hope everyone takes this into account.

Developer Response ,

Hi there. Thanks for sharing with us! Happy to hear you're enjoying the experience. Feel free to keep sending more feedback our way here: Google Drive app > Menu > Help & feedback > Send feedback or in our help forum: https://goo.gl/KpH8Vu.

Ease of Use

I overall really like the functionality of drive. There are just a few kind of UI and workflow things that I'd really love to see implemented. It would be great to have a more customizable storage system where you weren't limited to the different macro-tabs like home, starred, shared, and files. It would be cool if we could add our own to make drive the most optimum file storage system for us. It would also be great if there was a way to enable those same tabs, just in different iterations for different file types, so that I could just swipe over to another screen and see all of my starred and shared mp4 files, swipe again to see PDFS, and again to see JPEGs and PSD's or something like that. Additionally, it would be amazing if the download functionality was less cumbersome. I'd love to be able to open the share sheet, and just have the normal iPad menu system options of saving to files or doing all that other stuff. Most importantly, please make it possible to do things like download and move files off drive in bulk. There is nothing more annoying that having pictures of pages of a book and having to download and move each one individually because the function of the Drive's share sheet changes depending on wether or not multiple files are selected. Thanks!
Hi there. Thanks for the feedback! You can also send it here: Google Drive app > Menu > Help & Feedback. Appreciate it.

Love Google Drive Sharing and Organizing

I first started using Google Drive regularly as the secretary of my local music teacher association several years ago. I love the ability to organize with colored labeled folders, easily share and automatically update docs, and drag and drop files. Being able to actually see snippets of documents is so much more helpful than just a doc title. Having a platform that I can have easy access to on my pc, phone or any other pc I sign in to away from home is so convenient! I also love that I can add pdfs, word docs and view files and spreadsheets without the hassle of opening multiple programs. My husband and children have begun using it for college work and business after I showed them how intuitive it is. It’s like having your computer with all its docs right in your pocket for easy access on the go. I can share resources with piano parents via text, track tuition in sheets, use forms for music camp sign ups and create slide presentations for music workshops and view things on the go on my phone if I have inspiration to change a doc, need to check the status of forms etc.

I Hope These 2 iPad Pro Features Make It to the iPhone

Commentary: A thinner design and better camera for scanning documents could really come in handy on the iPhone.

presentations for iphone

Some of the 2024 iPad Pro's new features would be a great fit for the iPhone, especially the Pro Max model.

With its powerful M4 processor and compatibility with new accessories like the Apple Pencil Pro , Apple is hoping its new pair of iPad Pros will be compelling enough to lure you away from your PC or Chromebook. But some of the iPad Pro's new features would feel right at home on the iPhone, specifically future iPhone Pro or Pro Max models.

The 2024 iPad Pro's exceptionally thin design and upgraded document scanning capabilities feel like a perfect match for the iPhone. While it's true that the iPad Pro is being positioned as a portable and powerful work device, our smartphones are with us all the time -- making lightweight designs and the ability to capture receipts and other important documents on the go feel all the more important.

There's a precedent for new features arriving on the iPad Pro before trickling down to the iPhone. The 2020 iPad Pro gained a LiDAR scanner in March 2020 before that technology arrived on the iPhone 12 Pro later that year. Back in 2016, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro was the first to get Apple's True Tone display for improving white balance, which made its way to the iPhone 8 lineup and iPhone X the following year. Apple's ProMotion tech that dynamically adjusts the screen's refresh rate for smoother scrolling is another example of a display improvement that debuted on the iPad Pro in 2017 before landing on the iPhone 13 Pro in 2021.

Apple should continue that tradition by bringing newer iPad Pro features to the iPhone as well.

Why these features belong on future iPhones

iPad Pro on a table

The new iPad Pro is Apple's thinnest yet.

The new iPad Pro is Apple's thinnest product ever, according to the company. With the 13-inch model measuring just 5.1 millimeters in thickness, it's slimmer than the 8.25mm iPhone 15 Pro and the even sleeker 7.3mm iPhone SE by a large margin.

There's a case to be made that thinness matters more in the iPad Pro since it reduces the system's overall bulk when paired with keyboards and covers. But given that we carry our phones everywhere and reach for them 144 times per day, according to Reviews.org , such a dramatic reduction in thickness would go a long way.

It could also make the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max feel less cumbersome, perhaps winning over shoppers that may have passed on it before because of its heft. At a time when just about every other smartphone maker is exploring foldable devices , a dramatically slimmer look could put Apple's iPhone design back in the spotlight.

The same could be said for the document scanner. Apple's new iPad Pro models use artificial intelligence to identify documents in the camera app and reduce shadows by snapping multiple photos at once and stitching the scan together. If you're anything like me, your phone is your primary tool for saving receipts during work trips and sharing photos of restaurant bills with friends when deciding how to split the cost.

While it may not be the most exciting camera upgrade, it's certainly a practical one. Data from business-to-business research firm Aberdeen Strategy & Research mentioned in a 2023 blog post indicates that 30% of employees have a smartphone just for work purposes, and 68% of employees use an iPhone, perhaps suggesting there may be more demand for an improved iPhone document scanner than expected.

Apple seems to know that people use their iPhones for digitizing and sharing documents, as evidenced by the addition of Live Text in 2021, which recognizes text in photos so that you can copy-and-paste handwritten notes and more. An improved document scanner like the one on the new iPad Pro would be a great companion to this capability.

Like the iPad Pro's aforementioned superthin design, the document scanner also seems like a strong fit for future iPhone Pro Max models in particular. Apple's larger size Pro iPhones are known for having the company's top-of-the-line cameras, so it would make sense to see it gain a photography-oriented tool like this. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max's cameras already have an adaptive True Tone camera flash like the new iPad Pros. So if Apple were to bring this upgraded document scanning to the iPhone Pro Max, perhaps it could do so through a software update.

Will these changes actually come to future iPhones?

wwdc-2024-logo

Apple's WWDC conference will give us a peak at what's next for the iPhone's software.

Apple never discusses new products and updates before it's ready to officially announce them, meaning we won't know what to expect from future iPhones until they arrive. But Apple is holding its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on June 10, which is where the company announces new software features for its iPhone lineup.

Apple's next update, expected to be called iOS 18 , will bring a flurry of new AI-infused features to the iPhone, according to Bloomberg . There haven't been any mentions of the iPad Pro's document scanner coming to iOS 18 specifically. But the report does mention that Apple's update will focus on AI-driven features that are useful in everyday scenarios, and the iPad Pro's document scanner would seemingly fit that description.

We won't know what Apple has up its sleeve when it comes to new iPhone hardware until September, which is when the company traditionally introduces its new smartphones. There's some reason to believe Apple may indeed be working on a slimmer iPhone, although we may not see it until 2025. Analyst Jeff Pu has reported that Apple may have an iPhone 17 Slim in the works, according to 9to5Mac , and a report from The Information also indicates a thinner iPhone may arrive next year.

Apple's iPhone lineup has changed a lot over the years, particularly when it comes to the Pro and Pro Max models. Exploring a paper-thin design and improving the camera's functionality in practical ways could help Apple further distinguish its pro-level phones from the standard iPhone.

3. Pixelmator Photo

pixelmator

ps express

  • Creative Cloud
  • Multiple editing tools
  • Enhanced vignette
  • Blend modes
  • Eye correction
  • Remove unwanted blemishes
  • Photo filters

Up until recently, Photoshop Express was only a part of the Photoshop family for iPhone photography together with Adobe Photoshop Fix and Photoshop Mix.

Currently, Adobe decided to merge all three photo editing apps into a more powerful version of Photoshop Express. If you have any of the other two apps, you can continue to use them – but they are not in the app store anymore.

Photoshop Camera is still a separate editing app that allows you to change the looks of your picture before you make it.

If any Android users are reading this article, know that things haven’t changed on the Google Play Store, where you can still download all three apps – at least for now.

Among the many adjustments you can make to edit pictures, you can select multiple objects to apply edits selectively or make cut-outs. You can also add blur or remove noise, make a perspective correction and even do makeup transfer for your beauty pictures.

Adobe Photoshop Express allows you to use professional editing tools and fun features for your social feed. For example, you can retouch facial features for a perfect portrait, but you can also turn your face into a cartoon.

Adobe Photoshop Express is one of the best photo editing apps for iPhone, and you can use it together with other apps from the Creative Cloud.

Free photo editing apps for iPhone users are aplenty, but there are only a small handful that hit the mark – and this one truly does.

How do Professionals Edit Photos on iPhones?

Depending on the iPhone photo editing app used, a pro could edit their photos in many ways.

To keep things simple, since every iPhone owner has the Photos app, here are the basic steps when editing an image:

  • Update to the latest iOS – with iOS 13, Apple redesigned the photo editor, giving it a wider range of editing tools to touch up your photos and videos. To ensure you have the latest iOS version, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Work with raw images – if you work with JPEGs, you’ll have very little room for post-processing, while raw files have much more information. Since the iPhone 12 lineup, there’s a native raw file called ProRaw – if you have a previous iPhone, you’ll need to use a third-party app to photograph in raw.
  • Always back up the original image – even if Photos allows you to revert your edits, it’s better to have a copy of the original file before you start editing. This is useful if you want to keep both versions or edit the same photo in different ways.
  • Straighten – the first thing you want to do is straighten your photo and adjust the perspective if it needs it.
  • Crop – often, when you adjust the perspective, some pixels remain empty, or other parts go out of the frame. With the crop tool, you can reframe your photo to your liking. Both tools are in the same menu – you’ll also find the tool to rotate, flip, etc. You can also crop your images to change the aspect ratio – for example, make it a square 1:1 format to use as a profile picture or upload to Instagram.
  • Adjust the light – the next thing you want to do is edit anything related to light and exposure. Here, you can control the highlights and shadows, adjust contrast and brightness, etc.
  • Adjust the colors – once you’re happy with the exposure settings, you can move on to edit colors.
  • Use depth control and lighting if it’s a photo taken in portrait mode – if your image is not on Portrait mode, you won’t have these editing tools. However, Portrait Mode allows you to control the background blur and lighting effect.
  • Add a photo filter (optional) – once you’re done with your manual edits, you can finish your photo editing by adding a filter. This is useful for maintaining a consistent style or adding a creative touch.
  • Save – when you finish editing your photo, click Done. This will save your image in the Library, and it will replace the original photo – that’s why I advised you to keep a copy. If you change your mind later, you can always remove the edits because the Photos app works non-destructively.

How Can I Make My iPhone Take Better Photos?

Before you even get to using photo editing tools, there are several steps to take to ensure your iPhone takes better photos.

  • Update to the latest iOS – The default iPhone photo editor in iOS 13 includes Photographic Styles, Macro mode, Scene Detection, Mirrored Selfies and more. Depending on your iPhone model, you could take advantage of these new features to take a better photo.
  • Clean your iPhone camera lens – a smudged lens is the biggest cause of blurry iPhone photos. Wipe yours on your shirt before each shot to keep it clean.
  • Keep it steady – lock your elbows into your body while holding your iPhone to ensure your shot is as steady as possible. This will help keep every photo sharp.
  • Use a remote – did you know you can use the volume switch on your iPhone earphones to take a photo? This can help with keeping the phone steady and also help you take a less awkward selfie.
  • Shoot in raw – not all iPhone models support ProRaw – the native format for raw images. If this is your case, you can download a camera app to shoot in raw. From the photo editing apps recommended here, you can try Adobe Lightroom Mobile.
  • Enable grids to improve your composition – all iPhones have a grid with the rule of thirds to help you improve your composition skills. Also, you can download a camera app with other grids to learn the golden spiral, triangles, etc.
  • Lock the focus point – tap and hold on the main subject to lock the focus point. This way, you’ll be sure to have sharp images.
  • Adjust the exposure – you can darken or brighten your photo’s exposure before taking it by moving the yellow slider up or down.
  • Use the correct shooting mode – inside the camera app; you’ll find different shooting modes. To make the most out of your iPhone, you should take advantage of these tools. For example, if you want a bokeh background use the Portrait mode to get lens blur – if you’re working in low light, use Night mode, and so on.
  • Try live photos – using live photos, your iPhone registers a series of images in sequence that can be animated as a GIF or a short 1.5-second video. This feature is helpful to improve your photos because it allows you to choose the best frame and save it as a still image – you’ll never have a portrait with closed eyes again.
  • Clean up your storage – having thousands of photos in your iPhone camera roll is the norm, but you can usually improve the performance of your phone overall if you delete some or all of the photos.

Of course, once you’ve nailed the photoshoot, you can move on to improving your post-processing skills. In this article, we selected the best photo editing apps for you to choose from.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Marks a New Era

Apple iPhone 15 Pro

Every new iPhone in the past few years may have felt like an iterative upgrade—slightly better camera here, slightly better performance there. But Apple's new iPhone 15 lineup is getting a few once-in-a-decade changes that make them stand out in a sea of visually similar iPhones. The company announced the new iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max at its annual September event in Cupertino, California. From the addition of USB-C to the removal of the ill-famed notch, here are all the top features of the new iPhone .

Closeup of the new USBC charging port on the Apple iPhone 15

There's a new port on every new iPhone. After 11 years of the Lightning charging port, its time has come to an end. Replacing it is USB-C , the reversible charging port that's available on Apple MacBooks , iPads , Android phones , Windows laptops , and many more types of devices across various categories. Often dubbed as the “universal connector,” its primary benefit here is that you can finally use the same cable to recharge most of your devices.

The new port also adds the capability for faster data transfer. However, for the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, Apple is limiting the data transfer speeds to the current 480 megabits per second. Upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro models and you're able to unlock up to 10 Gigabits per second thanks to USB 3 support. The company is including a braided and color-matching USB-C to USB-C cable in the box, though this cable is limited to the baseline 480 Mbps transfer speeds. If you want to unlock the full potential of the Pro models, you'll need to buy your own capable cable .

Unfortunately, while USB-C could have opened the door to faster charging, Apple did not announce any improvement in charging speeds. On the company’s spec page, the official charging speed is still limited to 20 watts.

Apple has been adding USB-C to many of its own devices since 2015, but it has been collecting licensing fees for the Lightning port, which may partly be why the iPhone has been the longest holdout. However, last year the European Union ruled that USB-C must be on all new phones, tablets, and cameras by the end of 2024, and so here we are.

Along with USB-C, all four new iPhone models now have the Dynamic Island, which was first introduced and restricted to last year's iPhone 14 Pro models . This is the pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display housing the TrueDepth selfie camera. Gone is the notorious notch that debuted on the iPhone X . But the Dynamic Island, as its name suggests, is adaptive, almost acting like a second screen. If you're waiting for an Uber ride, the driver's arrival time will show up in the Dynamic Island. You can also see passive information from alarms, timers, flight information, and live sports game scores without ever having to hop into an app itself.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus retain the same size as their predecessors. They come in black, blue, green, yellow, and pink. Outside of the Dynamic Island and USB-C, these two models aren't too different.

Apple iPhone 15 smartphones in various colors arranged in a row

They still only have 60-Hz OLED screens when nearly every other phone at their price has smoother, more fluid 120-Hz refresh rate screens . They're powered by the A16 chipset, the very same that powered last year's iPhone 14 Pro models, and they're also stealing the 48-megapixel primary camera from the Pro, enabling them to capture more detail than ever before. The 12-megapixel ultrawide camera is largely the same. Apple, as usual, has announced improvements to its Photonic computational photography engine, so you should expect nicer photos overall, but time will tell.

Front and back of the Apple iPhone 15

Apple has saved many more of the upgrades for the Pro models to make them more worthy of the moniker. They are powered by the new A17 Pro chipset, which promises 10 percent faster performance cores, and a 2X faster neural engine.

Apple says the graphics processor unit is also the “biggest redesign in the history of Apple GPUs,” citing a 20 percent speed bump over its predecessor. Apple says this new GPU can create more detailed environments in mobile games while drawing less power, and it now has hardware-accelerated ray tracing , which is 4X faster. Because of all this, Apple says you can play console games like Resident Evil: Village on the iPhone 15 Pro, and games like the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage will have an iPhone version alongside console and PC versions. It'll be interesting to see how the fidelity of these AAA games matches up to their console counterparts.

Nice brushed finish.

You still get the 120-Hz ProMotion screen on the Pro, but Apple has refined the design to slim down the bezels around the display and, more importantly, added a titanium frame. Instead of stainless steel, the titanium 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max are now much lighter and more durable, which should make the latter easier to wield with one hand.

The big new camera change here is the addition of a periscope zoom camera exclusively for the iPhone 15 Pro Max model. This technology isn't new—Samsung famously has had a 10X optical zoom camera in its Galaxy Ultra phones for a few years, and last year's Google Pixel 7 Pro uses a 5X optical periscope zoom camera. Here, Apple says it enables 5X optical zoom, allowing you to capture subjects at a distance in high quality. The smaller iPhone 15 Pro is, sadly, still stuck at 3X zoom.

Closeup of a person's hand holding the iPhone 15 and displaying the new Action Button feature

Another exclusive for the Pro models is the Action Button. If this sounds familiar, it's the same name Apple gave to the extra customizable button on the Apple Watch Ultra , except on the iPhone, it's replacing the classic mute switch that has been on every iPhone since 2007. You can customize this button to trigger certain actions, like muting the phone, turning on the flashlight, or taking a photo with the camera open.

Apple placed an emphasis on sustainability throughout its September event and announced that it was moving away from leather cases and straps for its devices. It announced a new sustainable fabric material called FineWoven, and it declared that its going to be phasing out leather in favor of recycled and plant-based materials.

Apple FineWoven Cases on the iPhone 15 Pro smartphones

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus remain at the same price of $799 and $899, respectively. The iPhone 15 Pro stays at the same price of $999, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max is getting a price increase to $1,199, a $100 jump from their predecessors. However, you now get 256 GB of storage on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and this is the same price as the 256-GB iPhone 14 Pro Max. These phones will be up for preorder on Friday, September 15, and will officially launch on September 22. Stay tuned for our review soon.
