External Doctorate

At the Technical University of Munich (TUM) you may also pursue your doctorate as a so called „external” doctoral candidate. In an external doctorate, you are employed either by a non-university research institution (for instance a Max Planck Institute or a Helmholtz Center) or a company while the academic supervision of your dissertation is provided by TUM.

Please note the "Recommendations for doctoral projects in cooperation with universities of applied sciences, non-university research institutions, and companies" .

Non-university research institution

Non-university research institutions, e.g. the Max Planck Society, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft oder the Helmholtz Association offer an excellent research environment and research conditions. However, in Germany non-university research institutions do not have the right to award doctoral degrees themselves and therefore have to collaborate with universities entitled to such an award. TUM has excellent relations with non-university research institutions, some of them even located on TUM’s largest campus Garching-Forschungszentrum. TUM with its TUM Graduate School actively promotes close scientific collaborations of researchers with those from non-university research institutions through joint Graduate Centers and joint doctoral research projects. These joint doctoral research projects are supervised by both a senior researcher from the non-university research institution and from TUM.

Doctoral candidates based at non-university research institutions will usually be employed as research associates at the respective institution or receive a doctoral scholarship. Open positions and doctoral programs are announced directly on the website of the institutions.

Please note that in case of successful application at a non-university research institution, you still have to have a TUM professor who will supervise your dissertation at TUM. Usually, your new research institution will support you with finding a suitable TUM supervisor. However, sometimes you still have to search for a TUM supervisor yourself. Kindly consider our information sheet on “How to find a supervisor” .

Please also note that you always have to apply for doctoral admission at TUM. Further information on how to apply for a doctorate can be found in the section  “application” .

You may also do your external doctorate at TUM while working at a company. In this case, your doctoral project may or may not be related to your actual job.

Many companies offer job positions in research and development that are generally suitable for doctoral projects. These doctoral research at companies are often very hands-on, and let you become part of the industry at an early stage. However, the strong focus on applicability also means you do not have the same level of academic freedom or academic depth as when performing basic research at a university. In addition, external doctoral candidates are less involved in the work of their TUM chair/research group. Due to the fact that companies are not entitled to award doctoral degrees, you need to have a professor at TUM who will supervise your work academically and who will take care of your involvement in the TUM academic environment.

Please note that you need to find a TUM professor who will supervise your research project. Kindly consider our information sheet on “How to find a supervisor” . After you have found a supervisor at TUM, please apply for doctoral admission by the entry into the doctoral candidacy list. Further information on how to apply for a doctorate can be found in the section  “application” .

Onboarding events

As a doctoral candidate, your scientific project will be your focus, of course. In order to obtain a doctorate at TUM, however, you will be responsible for also completing a qualification program and fulfilling organizational tasks in your various roles as a GC-CIT and TUM-GS member, junior researcher and employee or scholarship holder. No one can do that for you. As coordinators of your Graduate Center, however, we will be able to prepare you so well that you will be optimally oriented at the start of your doctorate and your effort, in turn, minimized.

For this purpose, we offer online onboarding events at regular intervals. We strongly recommend that everyone participates in them. The best time for this is around the time you are entered on the doctoral candidacy list, but all doctoral candidates in need of "tutoring" are welcome.

Registration for the onboarding event is unnecessary; just follow the Zoom access link. It will be useful if you have your DocGS account and your Supervision Agreement handy for the event.

Upcoming events:

  • Wednesday, 25.09., 9:15-10:00
  • Monday, 21.10., 9:15-10:00
  • Tuesday, 26.11., 9:15-10:00

Submitting your dissertation at the School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT) happens in two steps:

  • electronic submission via DocGS: We recommend submitting the work electronically at least 3.5 weeks before the School Council meeting.
  • submitting the documents at the Center for Study and Teaching - Office of Doctoral Affairs: at least  3 weeks before the School Council meeting (hard deadline, entry stamp counts!)

At the same time, the supervisor (not the doctoral candidate) must report the examination committee to the GC CIT via email to gc_admin(at)cit.tum.de  at least  3 weeks before the School Council meeting (hard deadline) . Entering the examiners on the title page of the electronically submitted dissertation does not count as reporting the examination committee.

The upcoming School Council meetings can be found here: https://www.cit.tum.de/en/cit/school/organization/governing /.

The new Regulations for the Award of Doctoral Degrees, in effect as of January 1, 2014, mandate that all doctoral candidates of TUM automatically become members of TUM Graduate School . Therefore, all doctoral degrees of TUM School of Medicine are administered through the School’s Graduate Center – the TUM Medical Graduate Center (MGC) – or through a Thematic Graduate Center like HELENA , IGSSE or GSISH (only possible for some degrees).

As a part of TUM Graduate School, the Medical Graduate Center supports doctoral candidates in their research work. The Medical Graduate Center protects the quality of the doctoral programs in cooperation with the supervisors and promotes scientific competences as well as transferable skills, which are becoming increasingly more important. Thus, doctoral candidates are well prepared for leadership positions in science and society.

TUM School of Medicine offers, via the Medical Graduate Center, four different doctoral programs: Doctoral program for Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent (new regulations, described below), PhD, Dr. med. sci. and Dr. rer. nat. The individual programs are described briefly below. You can find more information on the homepage of the Medical Graduate Center: www.mgc.med.tum.de

TUM School of Medicine has been awarding the internationally recognized academic title Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) since the winter term 2006/2007. We offer a three-year graduate program that provides high-level scientific training for students with a background in medicine as well as for those with a background in natural and life sciences or engineering. The program consists primarily of an experimental scientific project that is performed in the laboratory of a faculty member in full-time. The practical work is complemented by interdisciplinary lectures, seminars and practical courses. About 50 research groups from various departments actively participate in our program. The projects cover a wide range of topics within and continuously expanding the boundaries of the program's main research areas: cardiovascular research, imaging, immunology and infection, neuroscience, oncology and molecular medicine. The goal of the program is to give our students a thorough scientific training and the tools to become successful and independent researchers.

Students are expected to focus on their research projects and course work. To allow them to be in the lab full-time for three years, all students receive funding which is provided through the program's scholarships and their advisors' labs.

Medical students of the Technische Universität München can be admitted well before obtaining their final medical degree. In an attempt to improve their clinical-scientific education, they will be able to alternately follow their regular medical studies and the training within the PhD program.

You may find more details on our webpage .

Dr. med. (dent.) sci.

TUM School of Medicine started the doctoral program in Translational Medicine in 2012 and thus created another sophisticated and attractive opportunity for medical students interested in research. The doctoral program includes one year of full-time lab work as well as two more years of supervised research on quality-tested subjects. Our students also receive scientific training and financial support.

Up to 30 students can be enrolled and funded every year in order to carry out their research projects within the doctoral program in Translational Medicine. According to the broad spectrum of research fields, our doctoral students can be involved in all areas of research both in experimental and in clinical projects. Please find more details about the program and its requirements on the webpage of the TUM Medical Graduate Center .

Dr. rer. nat.

The doctoral program in Experimental Medicine is a structured doctoral program for candidates in the natural sciences at the School of Medicine that awards the degree of Dr. rer. nat. The interdisciplinary mentoring by a physician and a natural scientist in cooperation with the School of Medicine and a natural science department of TUM is an outstanding benefit of this doctoral program compared to traditional doctoral education. The screening of doctoral candidates by an interdisciplinary committee guarantees the highest quality in the program.

Please find more details about the doctoral program Experimental Medicine here .

Dr. med. and Dr. med. dent.

TUM School of Medicine awards the doctoral degrees “Dr. med.” in human medicine and “Dr. med. dent.” in dentistry. Particularly, high value is placed on supporting careers of early-career scientists in medicine, especially by the integration in research and translation of the results into the clinical practice for the benefit of the patients. In the end, doctoral candidates prove their ability to carry out independent, in-depth scientific research with a written thesis (dissertation) and an oral examination.

Being a doctoral candidate for Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent. in connection with TUM Graduate School was not possible before January 1, 2014.This changed with the new Regulations for the Award of Doctoral Degrees as of January 1, 2014. From now on, medical doctorates will also be awarded within the context of TUM Graduate School, which brings all benefits of a structured doctoral program to the doctoral candidates.

Doctoral candidates who registered their doctoral project at the faculty before January 1, 2014 still fall under the regulations valid at the time of registration if the registration was complete and correct. The registration has to be verified by the confirmation with stamp and signature of the School’s Graduate Center office. All doctoral degrees registered as of January 1, 2014 fall under the new regulations.Switching to the old regulations is not possible.

You can find information and the process of the old regulations (registered until December 31, 2013) here .

Registering as a doctoral candidate according to the new regulations (since January 1, 2014) is only possible online. Please read the information on our website first: www.mgc.med.tum.de .

MDSI Doctoral Training Program

Today, researchers need not only expertise, but a toolkit of soft and interdisciplinary skills for success. Often, research questions cross disciplinary boundaries, audience-oriented communication decides upon success or failure, and entrepreneurial thinking is required to tackle common obstacles. The MDSI qualification program endows its participants with the skills to tackle these challenges and prepares them for the next stage of their career.

In addition to training, the program’s central focus is on networking and forging interdisciplinary connections. Additionally, the modules offer opportunities to gain valuable skills. After completing the program, the participants are prepared to successfully pursue a career in or outside of academia.

The qualification program imbues the participants with valuable scientific, technical and communication skills, offers opportunity to connect with other doctoral researchers, and provides insight into related areas of research. With these skills and competences, young researchers can tackle interdisciplinary challenges and collaborations, and, depending on the focus module, draw from in-depth knowledge related to research activities, switch to an entrepreneurial mindset, or communicate their findings to varying audiences.

The program consists of a mixture of mandatory and optional modules. While the mandatory modules ensure participants acquire skills and provide a variety of opportunities to build networks, the optional modules provide opportunities to deepen or apply these skills. The modules may be completed in any order.

MDSI-Certificate for Doctoral Researchers

All doctoral researchers who complete six of the seven mandatory activities including the four mandatory activities from the MDSI module plus at least two mandatory activities from the focus modules will receive the MDSI-Certificate for Doctoral Researchers.

In addition to the mandatory elements of the qualification program, any number of other activities may be elected.

Doctoral researchers not aspiring to receive the MDSI-Certificate may participate in any number of the mandatory or optional activities.

The activities can be registered in TUM Graduate School’s DocGS.

Graduate Center Physics

Nowadays a doctorate is far more than high-level scientific research. In the Graduate Center Physics you learn to master more and more complex research topics with interdisciplinary and team-oriented approaches.

Supervision Agreement

As doctoral candidate at the Graduate Center Physics you, your supervisor, and your mentor sign a supervision agreement (PDF) .

On the supervision agreement you need to specify a mentor and the mentor needs to accept this by signing the agreement. It is possible to switch mentors if e. g. during your work on the Ph. D. project the research direction clarifies. The mentor offers independent professional advice and is your opportunity to have a look from "outside" onto your Ph. D. project. You can choose your mentor freely – she/he only needs to have a Ph. D. herself/himself and must not be your supervisor. He/She later may become the second examiner but can come from industry or public life to offer experience from outside the university.

In a project plan set up together with your supervisor and continuously updated your research project is structured and qualification elements and mile stones are planned in advance if possible and sensible. You and your supervisor agree on the form for the project plan that suits you best. You are responsible for keeping it updated and storing it ( Template with suggestions ).

Qualification Program

Please submit all elements of the qualification program via the status page Membership and Qualification Program to the Physics database. If a course of the Physics Department is missing in the module list for internal courses please contact the GC PH office . Only really external courses shall be entered as such – recognition of external courses needs to be confirmed by your supervisor.

No direct entry into DocGS!

Please refrain from entering "Leistungsanträge" into DocGS! Data from the Physics database will be copied to DocGS in due course. Keep in mind that "Leistungsanträge" not in conforming to the quality standards of Physics Department will be rejected!

Good scientific practice

The rules of good scientific practice are part of the supervision agreement. They are taught by the supervisors. In addition the Faculty Graduate Center Physics regularly offers workshops and other courses on this topic.

See especially

  • Code of Conduct for Safeguarding Good Academic Practice and Procedures in Cases of Academic Misconduct of TUM (German with English translation)
  • Good scientific practice for scientific qualification reports and theses in physics , Recommendations of the Conference of Physics Faculties of 18th of May 2016
  • TUM Citation Guide of the university library
  • Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice , memorandum of DFG (German and English)

Mandatory Elements of the Qualification Program

The following elements of the qualification program in their minimal form are a requirement to submit your thesis if you entered the doctoral candidacy list after 1st of January 2014. The actual courses and elements taken have to be discussed with your supervisor and should be included in the project plan as soon as possible.

Kick-Off Seminar of TUM Graduate School

Each doctoral candidate participates in a kick-off seminar at TUM Graduate School. Sign in for a suitable kick-off at the beginning of your project. Dates and further informationen can be found at the TUM GS webpages .

Subject-Related Training

The Graduate Center Physics offers a wide range of subject-related training modules. Each doctoral candidate takes part with at least 10 CP, which is equivalent to the six course hours (SWS) required in the regulations for the award of doctoral degrees.

The catalog given below is open and suitable modules and courses can be included at any time. Furthermore new courses can be created to extend the portfolio of the Graduate Center Physics.

Additional Courses not yet included in the catalogue

Contact the administration office of the Graduate Center Physics if you are missing a course on a specific topic. We will support you by finding new courses or inviting external lecturers.

Graduate Center BioEngineering

The Graduate Center BioEngineering (GCB) is a thematic graduate center for doctoral candidates at various TUM departments doing research in bioengineering, biomedical technologies, medical physics, medical computer science and related subjects. The GCB is the contact point for all matters relating to the coctoral program, from registration all the way to graduation, for both interested students and for doctoral candidates. The GCB offers continuing education courses and promotes international exchange and networking among its members.

Interdisciplinary and international

The doctoral candidates who belong to the GCB all work on interdisciplinary projects in which they combine methodologies and key questions from medicine, biology, physics, information technologies and electrical engineering. Thus a doctoral program at the GCB always involves the readiness to engage with the content and cultures of other subjects. The GCB actively promotes this interdisciplinary approach. All doctoral candidates have to have a supervisor who is PI at the MIBE. All members of the GCB come together at events such as the annual summer school, where they have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with research in BioEngineering and related disciplines outside of their own respective specialty areas and to exchange and interact with instructors and other doctoral candidates with similar research interests. In order to promote international exchange, the GCB provides the doctoral candidates registered at the GCB with organizational and financial support for studies abroad within its possibilities.

Continuing education

In addition to their own research, the doctoral candidates are required to participate in various courses and workshops and to work in projects. In this context the candidates can put together their own individual program to fit their specific requirements and interests. Interdisciplinary events such as workshops on good scientific practice are a mandatory part of this program as well as active participation in the TUM and MIBE environment.

Registration

Doctoral Programs

Doctoral programs are taken very seriously at the TUM School of Medicine and Health as an instrument for promoting young talents. The legal basis for this can be found in the Bavarian Higher Education Act and based on this act, in the doctoral regulations of the Technical University of Munich. Since 2014, all doctoral students have automatically become members of the TUM Graduate School and can benefit from the advantages of the existing structures. Doctoral projects at the School of Medicine are usually managed at the Graduate Center of Medicine and Health (GCMH), or in certain cases a thematic graduate center such as HELENA (for certain titles only).

As part of the TUM Graduate School, the GCMH supports doctoral students in their research work. In cooperation with the supervisors, it ensures the quality of the doctoral procedures and promotes both the subject-specific and the interdisciplinary competencies of the doctoral students. In this way, doctoral students are optimally prepared for a wide variety of positions in science and society.

The TUM School of Medicine and Health offers five different doctoral paths through the GCMH: The Ph.D. or Dr. med. dent. degree, the Ph.D. degree, the Dr. med. sci. degree, the Dr. rer. nat., and the Dr. phil. These are briefly described below, and more information can be found on the program-specific websites.

All doctoral programs are based on close collaboration between doctoral students and the primary supervisors at their department or institute. Doctoral students mostly work independently on their research project and are accompanied by a Thesis Advisory Committee, which includes other members in addition to the primary supervisors. At the same time, they are integrated into the work of the department. In this way, doctoral students develop their identity as independent scientists. In addition, there are elements that provide additional support for the doctoral candidates and their supervisors. These include structural measures and offers for qualification, which follow best international standards, such as the early establishment of a supervision agreement, regular feedback discussions, good scientific practice, specialized courses as well as offers for interdisciplinary further education and financial support for trips abroad. These are complemented by program-specific components.

Dr. med. and Dr. med. dent.

The School of Medicine and Health awards, among other degrees, the doctoral degrees of Dr. med. in human medicine and Dr. med. dent. in dentistry. Particular emphasis is placed on the advancement of young scientists in medicine, especially through integration into research and implementation into clinical practice for the benefit of patients.

A written doctoral thesis (dissertation) and an oral examination are intended to demonstrate the ability to conduct independent, in-depth scientific work.

Up to and including 2013 (with complete registration of the doctorate by December 31, 2013 with confirmation MGC), a degree of Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent. was not possible in conjunction with the TUM Graduate School. Since the TUM doctoral regulations took effect on January 1st, 2014, medical doctoral degrees are also mandatorily located under this umbrella structure, which also provides doctoral students with all the advantages of a structured doctorate program.

For more information, please visit the homepage on the (dental) medical doctorate program.

Specific information on doctorates under the old regulations (registered until 31.12.2013) can be found here .

Ph.D. Medical Life Science and Technology

Since the winter semester 2006/2007, we offer the opportunity to obtain the internationally recognized academic title of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) after completing a six-semester doctoral program. The goal of the program is to provide a research-oriented interdisciplinary education in the fields of medicine, life sciences and natural sciences. Accordingly, the program is designed for candidates who have studied medicine, natural sciences, or engineering in their undergraduate studies. At the core of the program is a three-year experimental science project, which is carried out full-time in a research group of the TUM School. The experimental work is complemented by lectures, seminars and practical courses throughout the program. Approximately 50 research groups actively participate in the Ph.D. program. The projects cover a wide range of research topics within and outside the following focus areas of the program: cardiovascular disease, medical imaging, immunology and infection, neuroscience, oncology, and molecular medicine.

Program participants are expected to focus on their research projects and coursework. Funding (stipend or employment contract at the home lab) is provided to allow them to do three years of full-time research in the lab.

Students of human medicine at the Technical University of Munich have the opportunity to begin their doctoral studies after completing the first section of the medical examination, alternating with their medical training. This ensures an optimal integration of clinical and scientific training.

For more information, visit the Ph.D. program homepage .

Dr. med. (dent.) sci.

The PhD program Translational Medicine was launched in 2012, creating another challenging and attractive opportunity specifically for medical students interested in research. The doctoral program includes one year of full-time research and two years of study-accompanying research on quality-assessed projects. The optimal fit between project, research group and doctoral student is ensured within the framework of an annual project exchange. The doctoral candidates also receive systematic training in scientific work and financial support during their full-time research.

Each year, up to 20 doctoral students are supported in conducting their research projects through grants from the School. In keeping with the broad spectrum of research fields of the school, doctoral students can be involved in all research areas and in both experimental and clinical projects.

For details about the program and its requirements, please visit the program homepage .

Dr. rer. nat.

The structured doctoral program Experimental Medicine, offered since 2012, is aimed at doctoral students with a background in the natural sciences and concludes with the Dr. rer. nat. title. This attractive doctoral opportunity is characterized by the interdisciplinary supervision of the doctoral students by physicians and natural scientists, often in cooperation between the TUM School of Medicine and Health and a natural science faculty of the Technical University of Munich. The evaluation of the doctoral candidates, the projects and the host research groups by a steering committee guarantees an excellent quality of the doctoral theses and a high standard of the program.
