Research Degrees

Entry requirements.

The normal minimum entry requirement for a place on the Research Degree at Falmouth University is an upper second class honours (2:1) degree of a British university or recognised institution of higher education, or an equivalent qualification from an institution outside of the UK.

However, a Master's degree in an appropriate subject is considered to be a particularly valuable preparation for the academic and intellectual demands of an MPhil or PhD. In some instances, applicants without the minimum academic requirement as outlined above may be considered for a place on the Research Degree if they can demonstrate appropriate alternative qualifications, relevant professional experience, or previous research.

Hear from Course Leader Andy Peisley on the flexibility of the course:

Entry requirements

All applications are considered  on an individual basis. You  would normally be expected to hold an  honours  degree. The basic graduate degrees are the Master of Arts, Master of Science, the Doctor of Philosophy and the professional doctoral degree.

The Master of Arts degree is normally given for study in the humanities and social sciences. The Master of Science degree is normally given for study in the natural sciences and engineering. Other master’s degrees are granted by USC for proficiency in professional fields. Master’s degree programs are subject to the policies of the Graduate School.

All Doctor of Philosophy degrees must meet the standards of scholarship and other regulations established by the Graduate School. With the exception of Doctor of Dental Surgery, Juris Doctor and Doctor of Medicine, all professional doctoral programs are subject to the policies of the Graduate School.

In addition, the university also offers a number of graduate certificate programs. Graduate credit certificate programs must be approved by the University Committee on Curriculum and meet the following requirements: (1) a minimum of 12 units is required; the maximum number of units may vary; (2) for certificate programs of 16 units or fewer, all course work must be at the 500 level or above. For programs of more than 16 units, not more than 25 percent of the total units for the program may be at the 400 level; (3) for completion, a minimum cumulative USC grade point average of 3.0 must be achieved on all course work applied to the certificate; (4) all course work must be earned at USC, except for programs of more than 16 units, in which case not more than 25 percent of the course work may be transfer credit.

An Area of Emphasis is a specific focus within a major that has been formally approved. Areas of Emphasis are listed within parentheses following the appropriate majors and do not appear on diplomas but are indicated on transcripts.

A dual degree program joins two distinct graduate degree programs under a single, new program and POST (program of study) code. (Applicants to dual degree programs must apply separately to each degree and be admitted to both programs. After admission to both degree programs, the student is assigned the single, dual degree POST code.) Upon completion of the dual degree program, two degrees (and two diplomas) are awarded. Both degrees in a dual degree program must be awarded with the same conferral date.

A progressive degree program enables a USC undergraduate to begin work on a master’s degree while completing requirements for the bachelor’s degree. The degree may be in the same or different departments but should be in a similar field of study. Students in a progressive degree program must fulfill all requirements for both the bachelor’s degree and the master’s degree except for the combined total number of units for the degrees. The master’s degree may be awarded simultaneously with but not before the bachelor’s degree is awarded.

The university does not distinguish online programs and courses from those offered on campus. Requests to provide information about which programs and courses are offered online will be denied.

UD rises in engineering rankings

Article by UDaily Staff Photo by Evan Krape June 18, 2024

U.S. News and World Report ranks UD at #38 nationally, chemical engineering at #7

The 2025 edition of U.S. News and World Report ’s   Best Graduate Schools has ranked the University of Delaware's engineering program at #38 nationally, a jump of four spots. Additionally, UD’s consistently top-ranked chemical engineering graduate program remained in the top 10 nationally at #7.

“This momentum in the rankings reflects the outstanding work of our dedicated faculty, staff and students, as well as the strategic investments that the University has made to strengthen our intellectual capital, expand our academic programs, enhance our research capacity and provide unique opportunities to learn and grow,” said UD President Dennis Assanis. “UD’s top-notch engineering program is educating the workforce of the future and driving the growth of the Delaware region’s economy while also solving critical problems around the world."

The complete list of rankings for engineering graduate programs reflects an upward trajectory in six areas:

  • Chemical engineering, 7
  • Engineering schools, 38 (up from 42)
  • Materials engineering, 40 (up from 42)
  • Biomedical engineering, 50
  • Mechanical engineering, 50
  • Civil engineering, 51 (up from 55)
  • Electrical and computer engineering, 53 (up from 66)
  • Computer engineering, 55 (up from 57)
  • Computer science, 70 (up from 77)

“The College of Engineering is proud of the impact we are having in empowering students to achieve their educational goals, addressing society’s most vexing challenges and serving our communities,” said Levi Thompson, dean of the College of Engineering and Elizabeth Inez Kelly Professor of Chemical Engineering. “This most recent ranking, the highest in our college’s history, reflects the excellent work of our engineering and computer science faculty, staff and students and the exceptional outcomes of our strategic investments in innovative research, world-class teaching and student resources.”

Engineering innovation

Delaware engineers are driving discoveries in critical domains ranging from the sustainability of the nation’s energy infrastructure to the design and production of new biopharmaceuticals, the transformation of plastics waste into new materials, and disaster resilience along U.S. coastlines.

Innovations such as these have driven a period of remarkable growth in engineering and computing research at UD, with the College’s research expenditures exceeding $126 million in FY2023 — a 76% increase from FY2019 — and the College of Engineering comprising approximately half of the university's total research portfolio. College faculty have recently launched numerous federally funded centers, including the Center for Plastics Innovation (DOE EFRC); the Delaware Center for Musculoskeletal Research (NIH COBRE); the Center for Hybrid, Active, and Responsive Materials (NSF MRSEC); the Coastal Hazards, Equity, Economic Prosperity, and Resilience Hub (NSF CoPe); and the Center for Clean Hydrogen (DOD).

Over the past six years, the College of Engineering has established five new degree programs, including an interdisciplinary doctorate in quantum science and engineering, a biopharmaceutical sciences master’s degree that includes a 15-month internship, and a dual-degree initiative with Delaware State University. New bachelor's degree programs in materials science and engineering and cybersecurity engineering ensure that students graduating from UD keep pace with industry demands. In the fall of 2023, student enrollment in the college rose to 3,504.

Over $20 million in philanthropic funds were raised last year alone in support of new and renovated facilities, professorships and industry partnerships.

In addition, new facilities at UD’s Science, Technology and Accelerated Research (STAR) Campus are helping to advance engineering innovation at the local, regional and national levels. The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals ( NIIMBL ), located at STAR, is a national-scale public-private partnership focused on biopharmaceutical manufacturing and innovation to advance new technologies, secure domestic supply chains and train the biomanufacturing workforce. NIIMBL is complemented by the Securing American Biomanufacturing Research and Education ( SABRE ) Center, a pilot-scale biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility currently under development, and the Institute for Engineering Driven Health . College faculty also provide leadership in key workforce development activities within the MACH2 Department of Energy regional clean hydrogen hub, which was announced in October 2023 by the Biden-Harris administration.

Engineering is part of a growing UD innovation hub that extends to Fintech , an exploding industry that uses the power of data science and computer engineering to improve financial technology, equity, and access. Other strategic engineering-related investments across campus enable solutions for pressing societal problems such as plastic pollution, the need for sustainable energy resources, including clean hydrogen, and efforts to improve the  translation of research to practice .

About the rankings

In April 2024, U.S. News and World Report announced the  2025 graduate program rankings but delayed the release of the rankings for two specific programs: Best Engineering Schools and Programs and Best Clinical Psychology Programs.

The complete listing of UD graduate programs ranked by U.S. News and World Report is available on  UD’s Institutional Research and Effectiveness Rankings webpage . Please note that programs and specialties used by U.S. News might vary slightly from the names of degree programs used by UD.

UCF Graduate Programs in Engineering, Computer Science Highlight Research in U.S. News Rankings

Breakthroughs in AI, virtual and augmented reality, hypersonic propulsion, cybersecurity, robotics and more are pushing the envelope for UCF’s engineering programs.

By UCF | June 18, 2024

phd courses falmouth

Fueled by world-class faculty with groundbreaking research and strong industry partnerships, UCF serves Florida as its premier engineering and technology university.

College of Engineering and Computer Science faculty are leaders in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), hypersonic travel, energy, next-generation computing hardware and aerospace, fields that are major economic drivers for Florida and that are critical to our state and nation’s future.

Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report ‘s ranked nine of UCF’s other graduate programs among the top 50 on the 2024 Best Graduate Schools list.

This pioneering engineering research by expert UCF faculty prepares students to thrive in their careers, as does UCF’s longstanding relationships with industry partners who are eager to hire talented students. Partners include Electronic Arts, Lockheed Martin, NASA, Northrop Grumman, Siemens, Walt Disney World and Universal Studios.

Collectively, UCF’s cutting-edge, high-impact teaching practices and partnerships have drawn many recognitions, including the latest from U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools rankings.

Today, U.S. News & World Report ranks three of UCF’s engineering and computer science graduate programs among the top 50 in the nation. The industrial/manufacturing/systems engineering program is ranked No. 43, aerospace is No. 47 and computer engineering is No. 50. Two other programs — materials engineering and electrical/electronic/communications engineering — ranked just outside the top 50, at No. 52 and No. 53 respectively.

A total of nine engineering and computer science programs rank among the top 50 among the nation’s public universities.

“Our outstanding engineering faculty are conducting impactful research that is advancing our knowledge of space , modeling and simulation, virtual and augmented reality, and many other high-tech fields,” says Michael D. Johnson, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “They are innovators and inventors fueling our region’s economy and our society’s quality of life, healthcare , energy and transportation systems , and they excel at preparing our graduates to thrive in their careers.”

Twenty-nine percent of Kennedy Space Center employees and 25% of Lockheed Martin’s Orlando employees earned UCF degrees. Aviation Week Network has named UCF the No. 1 supplier of graduates to the aerospace and defense industry for six consecutive years.

Bringing More Brilliant Minds Together

UCF’s College of Engineering and Computer Science produces 25% of Florida’s engineering and computer science graduates, according to the State University System. The college’s goal is to educate 25,000 engineering and technology students by increasing capacity by 50%.

One important path to achieving that goal is to expand the college’s faculty. Last year and this year combined, the college has hired 55 new faculty members, including many with expertise in the strategic investment program areas identified by the university, such as AI, energy, next-generation computing hardware, space-aerospace, digital twin and infectious diseases. The new faculty hires will further strengthen the college’s research initiatives and opportunities for students to learn alongside talented faculty in the classroom and in research labs.

Plans for this fall also include one new degree program. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will launch a master of science in robotics and autonomous systems program . Students will learn to analyze, design and develop robotics and autonomous systems including self-driving cars, drones, medical robots and even mechanical dogs.

The new faculty and degree program join a host of current UCF engineering and computer science faculty who are conducting groundbreaking research:

  • Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Kareem Ahmed received Department of Defense funding that’s establishing UCF as a leader in hypersonics and space propulsion research. Hypersonic propulsion would allow for air travel at speeds of Mach 6 to 17, or more than 4,600 to 13,000 miles per hour, and has applications in commercial and space travel.
  • Sudipta Seal, chair of materials science and engineering, and Ozlem Garibay, assistant professor in industrial engineering and management systems, have created an Al-based prediction method that helps develop life-saving medicines and treatments for various diseases with up to 97% accuracy.
  • Tarek Elgohary, an associate professor of aerospace engineering, is developing algorithms that will accurately track space objects like asteroids and satellites so they don’t collide with spacecraft. It’s a vital tool given the rapid growth of space junk in cislunar space, which stretches from Earth to just beyond the moon’s orbit.
  • Carolina Cruz-Neira, the Agere Chair Professor at the UCF Department of Computer Science and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, is a pioneer in the areas of virtual reality and interactive visualization, having created and deployed a variety of technologies that have become standard tools in industry, government and academia. In a few weeks, she will be inducted into the inaugural Augmented World Expo (AWE) XR Hall of Fame , joining an elite international group of 100 researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, advocates and others. Cruz-Neira was one of just 22 researchers selected. “It is not well known that UCF has one of, if not the, largest concentration of VR researchers in the U.S.,” she says. “Of course, the strong reputation of UCF as a leader in modeling and simulation ties very well with the ecosystem.”

In addition, the internationally recognized Collegiate Cyber Defense Club at UCF won first place at the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in April. The club has been sending student teams around the world to compete against other universities since 2013. In all, UCF cybersecurity teams have earned 87 first place awards — including five NCCDC titles — 29 second-place and 25 third-place awards. The competitions allow UCF students to sharpen their skills before cybersecurity professionals and are hosted by companies from private industry, such as IBM, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Raymond James, Raytheon and several federal agencies.

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Actions to Keep Families   Together

Since his first day in office, President Biden has called on Congress to secure our border and address our broken immigration system. As Congressional Republicans have continued to put partisan politics ahead of national security – twice voting against the toughest and fairest set of reforms in decades – the President and his Administration have taken actions to secure the border, including:

  • Implementing executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum when encounters are high;
  • Deploying record numbers of law enforcement personnel, infrastructure, and technology to the Southern border;
  • Seizing record amounts of fentanyl at our ports of entry;
  • Revoking the visas of CEOs and government officials outside the U.S. who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully; and
  • Expanding efforts to dismantle human smuggling networks and prosecuting individuals who violate immigration laws.

President Biden believes that securing the border is essential. He also believes in expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and that immigrants who have been in the United States for decades, paying taxes and contributing to their communities, are part of the social fabric of our country. The Day One immigration reform plan that the President sent to Congress reflects both the need for a secure border and protections for the long-term undocumented. While Congress has failed to act on these reforms, the Biden-Harris Administration has worked to strengthen our lawful immigration system. In addition to vigorously defending the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals) policy, the Administration has extended Affordable Care Act coverage to DACA recipients and streamlined, expanded, and instituted new reunification programs so that families can stay together while they complete the immigration process.  Still, there is more that we can do to bring peace of mind and stability to Americans living in mixed-status families as well as young people educated in this country, including Dreamers. That is why today, President Biden announced new actions for people who have been here many years to keep American families together and allow more young people to contribute to our economy.   Keeping American Families Together

  • Today, President Biden is announcing that the Department of Homeland Security will take action to ensure that U.S. citizens with noncitizen spouses and children can keep their families together.
  • This new process will help certain noncitizen spouses and children apply for lawful permanent residence – status that they are already eligible for – without leaving the country.
  • These actions will promote family unity and strengthen our economy, providing a significant benefit to the country and helping U.S. citizens and their noncitizen family members stay together.
  • In order to be eligible, noncitizens must – as of June 17, 2024 – have resided in the United States for 10 or more years and be legally married to a U.S. citizen, while satisfying all applicable legal requirements. On average, those who are eligible for this process have resided in the U.S. for 23 years.
  • Those who are approved after DHS’s case-by-case assessment of their application will be afforded a three-year period to apply for permanent residency. They will be allowed to remain with their families in the United States and be eligible for work authorization for up to three years. This will apply to all married couples who are eligible.
  • This action will protect approximately half a million spouses of U.S. citizens, and approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under the age of 21 whose parent is married to a U.S. citizen.

Easing the Visa Process for U.S. College Graduates, Including Dreamers

  • President Obama and then-Vice President Biden established the DACA policy to allow young people who were brought here as children to come out of the shadows and contribute to our country in significant ways. Twelve years later, DACA recipients who started as high school and college students are now building successful careers and establishing families of their own.
  • Today’s announcement will allow individuals, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers, who have earned a degree at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education in the United States, and who have received an offer of employment from a U.S. employer in a field related to their degree, to more quickly receive work visas.
  • Recognizing that it is in our national interest to ensure that individuals who are educated in the U.S. are able to use their skills and education to benefit our country, the Administration is taking action to facilitate the employment visa process for those who have graduated from college and have a high-skilled job offer, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers.
