பார்வையற்ற பெண்ணாக பிரமிளா என்ற கதாப்பாத்திரத்தில் நடித்திருக்கும் மஹாஸ்ரீ, மிக அழுத்தமான கதாப்பாத்திரை மிக சுலபமாக நடித்திருக்கிறார். அவர் உண்மையிலேயே பார்வையற்றவராக இருப்பாரோ, என்று நினைக்கும் வகையில் சிறப்பாக நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

பவிதா என்ற கதாப்பாத்திரத்தில் நடித்திருக்கும் இந்திரா, செந்தில் என்ற வேடத்தில் நடித்திருக்கும் தினேஷ், இந்திரனின் தந்தையாக நடித்திருக்கும் டான் சிவகுமார், இந்திரனின் அம்மாவாக நடித்திருக்கும் உமா மகேஸ்வரி, மண்டேஸ் ரமேஷ் என படத்தின் நடித்திருக்கும் அனைத்து நடிகர்களும் கதாப்பாத்திரத்திற்கு பொருத்தமாக இருப்பதோடு, கொடுத்த வேலையை குறை வைக்காமல் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

தினேஷின் ஒளிப்பதிவில் காட்சிகள் அனைத்திலும் அமைதியும், அழகும் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது. எஸ்.பி.வெங்கடேஷின் பின்னணி இசை கதைக்கு ஏற்ப பயணித்திருக்கிறது. படத்தொகுப்பாளர் சுரேஷ் அர்ஸின் படத்தொகுப்பு நேர்த்தி.

எழுதும் போது ஏற்படும் சந்திப் பிழைகளை ஒற்றுப் பிழைகள் என்று சொல்வார்கள். ஆக, பிழை என்பதற்கான அர்த்தமாக தான் இப்படத்திற்கு ‘ஒற்று’ என்று தலைப்பு வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள் போலிருக்கு.

தேடல் ஜானர் கருவுக்கு சஸ்பென்ஸான திரைக்கதை அமைத்து, அமைதியான காட்சிகள் மூலம் ஒரு அழகான இலக்கண படத்தை கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் மதிவாணன் சக்திவேல்.

அமைதியான சூழலில் நடக்கும் கதையில் பல சஸ்பென்ஸ் காட்சிகளை வைத்து படத்தை சுவாரஸ்யமாக நகர்த்தியிருக்கும் இயக்குநர் மதிவாணன் சக்திவேல், பிரமிளா யார்? இந்திரன் யார்? என்ற கேள்வியை ஆரம்பத்திலேயே நம் மனதில் ஏற்படுத்தி அடுத்தடுத்த காட்சிகள் மூலம் படத்தின் மீதான எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பை அதிகரித்து விடுகிறார்.

படத்தில் நடித்திருக்கும் நடிகர்கள் அனைவரும் புதுமுகங்களாக இருப்பது மற்றும் கதை குறிப்பிட்ட லொக்கேஷன்களில் பயணிப்பது படத்திற்கு சிறிது பலவீனமாக இருந்தாலும், புதியவர்களின் இந்த முயற்சியை பாராட்டி வரவேற்கலாம்.

மொத்தத்தில், ‘ஒற்று’ ஒகே தான்.

‘Irugapatru’ movie review: A flawed but heartfelt drama with impressive performances

Yuvaraj dhayalan’s trio of interconnected trouble-in-paradise stories is flawed but admirable, and is helped largely by performances from shraddha srinath, vidharth and sri.

The proverbial saying that likens relationships to a string which snaps when strung too tight, but needs more than a feather-like touch might now seem clichéd. Such sayings are popular for how they tend to come back to your life with a renewed meaning; a fresh understanding that was previously lost in its simplicity.

Yuvaraj Dhayalan’s film Irugapatru (Hold Tight) feels like one such quote that tells us something universal, and gives the comfort of familiarity with a teeny bit more. The film takes the cases of three couples — conveniently from different age groups and economic backgrounds — with characters that are emotionally just where they need to be, for Yuvaraj to make his points and do a balancing act of sorts. The screenplay walks a tight rope with scenes from each of the three stories sequenced progressively.

For IT professional Rangesh (Vidharth), his wife Pavithra’s (Abarnathi) weight gain post-childbirth is a serious problem. He abhors the sight of his wife lying beside him, and since they have a nanny/maid, her laziness and overeating needs to be ‘blamed’. But what lies underneath all that, within the walls of their humble world, is a painful issue you might see in relationships all around you.

Arjun (Sri) and Divya (Saniya Iyappan) are a 20-something couple conflicted with each other’s differences in lifestyle, expression and love languages. Arjun struggles to wrap his head around his wife’s ‘falling out of love’ with him, while Divya is petrified to even come home to her husband, once the love of her life. Him losing his cool in an instant and her breakdowns are all symptoms of something that’s been going on for too long. 

So when it all comes crashing down, Arjun and Pavithra find their way to the clinic of Mithra Manohar (Shraddha Srinath), a marriage counsellor who calls a spade a spade, and imbues empathy in everything she says. She sends Arjun and Pavithra back to their worlds with a lot of pondering, but asks them to persuade their partners to attend a session as well; while Divya is ready to give it a try, how Rangesh is made to attend leaves you in splits.

But Mithra is a human, as imperfect as any of us, and so back home, we see a growing tightness at the heart of her husband Manohar (Vikram Prabhu) due to his wife’s constant ‘therapizing’ of him. Mithra holds her relationship with an iron fist, not letting even the tiniest of problems go unattended and conducts a weekly ‘honesty hour’ with her partner to boot. Manohar wishes his relationship was much simpler and easier, in which couples do as they like and fight if they want to. Now, does it all seem like its the men pointing fingers at women? Let’s come to that later.

Irugapatru (Tamil)

Firstly, how Yuvaraj brings humour to the mix works largely (of course barring the jabs at the expense of a woman’s body). For instance, in the beginning, Arjun-Divya’s story is told as one with no space for comedy, but when we dig deeper into the other two, we find late comedian Manobala in a cameo as Arjun’s boss. This matters as Yuvaraj’s screenplay technique pays off, every character gets their fair share, and you see the earnestness throughout the film.

But it’s the resolution for these well-written conflicts that are disappointing. The film fails in telling Pavithra that it’s alright for her body to stay the same — something that only Mithra stands by — but the narrative doesn’t quite support this. Some other unnecessary ideas are irksome, like how for everything the psychologist gets right, she gives into her husband’s belief that a possessiveness of a certain kind is an expression of love.

Also, considering all the individuality, self-esteem, and emotional liberation that Irugapatru bats for, it seems that the love it shows to each of the characters (by defining why they are the way they are) finds the film in a conundrum it never solves. In this world, the women end up being the only ones who do all the vital ‘actions’ to help their relationship — whether it’s staying away from their husbands, or blindly doing what they are told to by their partners — and the men are the ones who merely react.

What stands out about Irugapatru are the performances, especially from Shraddha, Vidharth, and Sri (notice during a montage, how Shraddha does nothing but grin to make us feel for Mithra). This is helped by Justin Prabhakaran’s hearty music, Gokul Benoy’s saccharine frames, and effective dialogues.

They say that even if therapy helps you solve 99 per cent of your problems, none of it would matter if you aren’t willing to put in that extra one per cent. Irugapatru is one such casual support circle discussion that might work for those who give in to its demands; if the film makes you look into the eyes of your loved one (what Mithra proposes we do every day) or introspect to learn from our mistakes, it’s a good evening at the movies.

Oru Thekkan Thallu Case review: Great performances, but storytelling could be better

From the top of a 250-metre high lighthouse on the beach, all of a little town in South Kerala could be seen, says the narrator of Oru Thekkan Thallu Case . Inside the tower then, on cue, appears the cartoon figure of Biju Menon. A nice little animation introduces the characters of the town in the titles before the film opens. The situation is made clear in a few scenes — Biju Menon is Amminipilla, a sort of hero figure in the town whom no one wants to mess with. A gang of five young men are pitted against him for many reasons. The film, based on a short story by GR Indugopan, revolves around this rivalry, set against a beautiful rustic background, but lacking in storytelling quality. It is director Sreejith N’s first film.

The story unfolds around Kollam district, in the mid 1980s. No one says the year out aloud but it is made clear from the carefully arranged set. The roads, the shops, the clothing of men and women are all comfortably in tune with the time. Characters outside of the main thread make their presence felt everytime there is a scene in the town. A man selling medicinal concoctions (Prasanth Murali), a sex worker who is in love with Amminipilla, and others. They love to watch the exchanges between Amminipilla and the gang of young men, led by Podiyan (Roshan Mathew).

Roshan Mathew, like he did in Thottappan , easily transforms into a rough and unruly man who carries a grudge. His friends and he sit in dark corners and plot against Amminipilla, the man who has inadvertently humiliated them in different ways. Amminipilla lives in a cute house with his wife Rukmini (Padmapriya looking pretty in saris and mundu). Next door to them is Vasanthi (Nimisha Sajayan), who has sworn that she'd only marry Podiyan. It is a strange foursome — Amminipilla and Rukmini living a happy life, Rukmini and young Vasanthi sharing a friendship, Vasanthi and Podiyan very much in love, but Podiyan and Ammini at each other's throats.

While the women's friendship is warm and soothing, the dubbing for Padmapriya — in an attempt to make the character speak south Kerala slang — makes her otherwise wonderful performance stick out. You have to wonder why she is less often seen in Malayalam cinema. Nimisha does a commendable job of speaking 'thekkan' (south) Malayalam. Their characters are not reduced to women just worrying over men, but about each other too. The men do not get to ignore them, their strength very much dependent on their relationships with the women. 

Biju Menon, who has been on an upward trajectory for a few years, is admirable as Amminipilla. Even the minute expressions coming out so very clearly between the fights are great. He has an amused expression on his face when he sees one of the young gang of men appear fearfully before him. The camera (by Madhu Neelakandan) puts him in some captivating frames, lighting a beedi from a stove, jumping to the ground on a knee ready to face a crowd of men. And every time Amminipilla makes a comeback, there is peppy music in the background, cheering him on.

The young actors — Aswath Lal, Arun, Reju and Akhil — all do adorably well, raging and whining and making peace. Only, the writing does not often convey the emotions it intends to — most of the humour falling flat, the retaliations unconvincing. The film also romanticises gang fighting, the woman sending her humiliated man to 'go drink three bottles of toddy and beat up everyone who talks ill of him in a way they'll remember forever'. It is the same idea that extends the ending — which seemed novel when the credits had rolled — to a scene with the hero afterward. Would have been better without it.

திரை விமர்சனம்: ஒரு நொடி

மதுரை அலங்காநல்லூரில் போட்டோ ஸ்டூடியோ வைத்திருக்கும் சேகரன் (எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கர்) திடீரென காணாமல் போகிறார். தாங்கள் திருப்பி கொடுக்க வேண்டிய கடன் தொகைக்குப் பதிலாக தங்களின் நிலப் பத்திரத்தை அபகரித்துக்கொண்ட கரிமேடு தியாகு (வேல ராமமூர்த்தி) தன் கணவனைக் கடத்தியிருக்கக் கூடும் என்று புகார் அளிக்கிறார் சேகரனின் மனைவி சகுந்தலா (ஸ்ரீரஞ்சனி). சேகரனைக் கண்டுபிடிப்பதற்கான விசாரணையைக் கையிலெடுக்கிறார் காவல்துறை ஆய்வாளர் பரிதி இளமாறன் (தமன் குமார்).

இதற்கிடையே நகைக்கடையில் பணியாற்றும் பார்வதி (நிகிதா) என்னும் இளம்பெண், மர்மமான முறையில் கொல்லப்படுகிறார். பார்வதியைக் கொன்றது யார் என்பதையும் பரிதியும் அவரது குழுவினரும் விசாரிக்கத் தொடங்குகின்றனர். சேகரன் என்ன ஆனார்? பார்வதியைக் கொன்றது யார்? சேகரன் தொலைந்து போனதற்கும் பார்வதி கொலைக்கும் என்ன தொடர்பு? இப்படி பல கேள்விகளுக்கு விடை தருகிறது மீதிக் கதை.

இரண்டு குற்றங்களின் விசாரணையை முன்வைத்து இறுதிவரை யார் குற்றவாளி என்னும் மர்மத்தைத் தக்கவைத்து கிளைமாக்ஸில் மர்மத்தை விலக்கும் பாணியிலான திரைக்கதையைக் கூடுமான வரை சுவாரஸியமாகக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் அறிமுக இயக்குநர் பி.மணிவர்மன். சந்தேக வலையில் விழும் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் தேடிக் கண்டுபிடிப்பதும் அவர்களிடம் விசாரணை நடத்துவதும் ஒவ்வொருவரிடமிருந்தும் வழக்கு வேறு திசைக்கு நகர்வதுமாகப் பயணிக்கும் திரைக்கதையில் வியக்க வைக்கும் தருணங்கள் எதுவும் இல்லை என்றாலும் பார்வையாளரின் கவனத்தைத் தக்கவைக்கிறது. பரிதி புத்திசாலித்தனமாகவும் நிதானத்துடனும் விசாரணையைக் கையாள்கிறார். சந்தேக நபர்கள் ஒருவேளை தவறு செய்யாதவர்களாக இருக்கலாம் என்கிற கவனத்துடன் இருப்பது முதிர்ச்சியான அணுகுமுறை.

அதே நேரம், 2 குற்றங்கள் குறித்த விசாரணையை ஒரே நேரத்தில் ஒரே குழு மேற்கொள்வதும் அதனால் நிறைய தகவல்களைத் தருவதும் பார்வையாளர்கள் பின் தொடரக் கடினமாக உள்ளன. அதோடு பார்வதியின் கதையில் அளவுக்கதிகமான சென்டிமென்ட், காதல், டூயட் போன்றவை பரபரப்பான த்ரில்லர் திரைக்கதையில் தேவையற்ற வேகத்தடைகள். இதனால் இரண்டாம் பாதி நீளமாக இருப்பது போன்ற உணர்வு ஏற்படுகிறது.

இறுதியில் குற்றவாளி யார் என்பதும் குற்றத்துக்கான காரணம் என்ன என்பதும் தெரியவரும்போது ‘இதற்குத்தான் இவ்வளவு பில்டப்பா?’ என்று தோன்றுவதைத் தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை. ஒரு தவறு செய்துவிட்டு அதை மறைப்பதற்காக மேலும் பல தவறுகளைச் செய்துகொண்டே இருப்பதற்கு பதிலாக உண்மையை ஒப்புக்கொள்வதே மேலானது என்னும் செய்தியை சொல்ல முயன்றிருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் அது உரிய தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை.

காவல்துறை அதிகாரியாக தமன் குமார், கதாபாத்திரத்துக்குக் கச்சிதமாகப் பொருந்துகிறார். நடிப்பிலும் குறை வைக்கவில்லை. எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கர், ஸ்ரீரஞ்சனி, வேல ராமமூர்த்தி, பழ.கருப்பையா, தீபா சங்கர், கஜராஜ் என தெரிந்த முகங்களோடு பல புதுமுகங்களும் நடித்திருக்கின்றனர். இவர்கள் அனைவருமே கொடுத்த வேலையைச் சரியாகச் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

சஞ்சய் மாணிக்கத்தின் பின்னணி இசை பரவாயில்லை. ஒளிப்பதிவும் படத்தொகுப்பும் கதைக்குத் தேவையானதைத் தந்துள்ளன. மர்மம் நிறைந்த குற்ற விசாரணையை வைத்து பின்னப்பட்ட ‘ஒரு நொடி’ கலவையான உணர்வைத் தருகிறது.

நம்ம தமிழ் சினிமாவுக்கு என்னதான் ஆச்சு? சில மாதங்களாக குறைந்த எண்ணிக்கை படங்கள்தான் ரிலீஸ் ஆகுது. ரிலீஸ் ஆகும் படங்களில் பல படங்கள் பார்க்க பத்து பேர்கூட இல்லாமல் தியேட்டரில் ஷோ கேன்சல் ஆகுது. மலையாளப் படங்கள் இங்கே கல்லா கட்டுது. பகத் பாசிலும், வினீத் ஸ்ரீனிவாசனும் தமிழ்நாட்டு மக்களுக்குப் பிடித்த ஹீரோக்களா மாறிகிட்டு இருக்காங்க. இதுக்கெல்லாம் ஒரு விடிவு காலமே இல்லையா என புலம்பும் தமிழ் ரசிகர்களுக்கு ஆறுதல் தரும் படமாக வந்துள்ளது ‘ஒரு நொடி’ திரைப்படம்.

மணிவர்மன் இந்தப் படத்தை இயக்கி உள்ளார். தருண் குமார், வேல ராமமூர்த்தி, எம். எஸ். பாஸ்கர் நடித்துள்ள இப்படத்தை மதுரை அழகர் மூவிஸ் மற்றும் ஒயிட் லாம்ப் பிக்சர்ஸ் தயாரித்துள்ளது.

மதுரையில் சேகரன் என்பவர், தான் வாங்கிய கடனை திருப்பிக் கொடுக்க செல்லும்போது காணாமல் போகிறார். கடன் தந்து மற்றவர்களின் சொத்தை நயவஞ்சகமாக அபகரிக்கும் கரிமேடு தியாகு என்பவரை கைது செய்து விசாரணை செய்கிறது போலீஸ். இந்தச் சூழ்நிலையில் மதுரையில் ஓர் இளம்பெண் மர்மமான முறையில் கொலை செய்யப்படுகிறார். இப்பெண்ணின் காதலன், தந்தை என அனைவரையும் விசாரணை செய்கிறது காவல் துறை. எந்தத் துப்பும் கிடைக்கவில்லை. ஒரு கட்டத்தில் ஒரு நொடி, ஒரு விஷயம் காவல் துறை அதிகாரி மனதில் பிளாஷ் அடிக்கிறது. இந்த விஷயம் குற்றவாளியைப் பிடிக்க உதவுகிறது. அந்த விஷயம் என்ன என்பதுதான் சுவாரசியமான ட்விஸ்ட்டாக அமைகிறது..

நம் தமிழ் இயக்குநர்களாலும் திரில்லர் படத்தைச் சிறப்பாக தர முடியும் என நிரூபித்து உள்ளார் மதுரை மண்ணின் இயக்குநர் மணிவர்மன். மாறுபட்ட மதுரையை காட்டி அறிவியல் பூர்வமான திரில்லர் படத்தை தந்துள்ளார்.

ஒரு சிறு பிசிறு தட்டினாலும் குழம்பும் திரைக்கதையில் சிறு குழப்பமும் இல்லாமல் படம் நகர்கிறது. தொடர்ந்து விசாரணை செய்வதாக படம் நகர்வது சற்று சலிப்பாக இருந்தாலும், ஒவ்வொரு விசாரணையின் முடிவிலும் ஒரு ட்விஸ்ட் இருப்பதால் ரசிக்க முடிகிறது.

‘எந்தக் கேரக்டரானாலும் தந்து பாரு’ என சவால் விடும் எம். எஸ். பாஸ்கர் இந்தப் படத்தில் சேகரனா சபாஷ் போட வைக்கிறார். அரசியல் பின்புலம் கொண்ட தாதாவாக அசால்ட் செய்கிறார் வேல ராம மூர்த்தி. நல்ல கதையம்சம் கொண்ட படங்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து நடிக்கிறார் தருண் குமார் என்பது பாராட்ட வேண்டிய விஷயம். சாக்லேட் பாய் போல இருப்பவர் இறுக்கமாக முகத்தை வைத்துக்கொண்டு அழகாக விசாரணை செய்வது நன்று! இதுபோன்று தொடர்ந்து நல்ல கதைகளைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து நடித்தால் முன்னணி ஹீரோவாக வர வாய்ப்புள்ளது.

பார்வதி கேரக்டரில் வரும் நிகிதா ஒரு மதுரை பெண்ணை கண் முன் கொண்டு வருகிறார். அப்பாவிடம் காதலுக்காகச் சண்டை போடும் போதும், காதலனிடம் காதலை ஏற்கும்போதும் மிக இயல்பான நடிப்பு.

சஞ்சய் மாணிக்கத்தின் இசை திரில்லர் காட்சிகளில் நம் பயத்தை அதிகரிக்க வைக்கிறது.குரு சூர்யாவின் படத் தொகுப்பும், ரத்தீஷின் ஒளிப்பதிவும் இரு தூண்களாக படத்தைத் தாங்கி நிற்கின்றன. நல்ல டீம் சேர்ந்து ஒரு நல்ல படம் தந்துருக்காங்க. அவசியம் போய் பாருங்க.
