• Reading with understanding the ideas developed in an article by clearly stating another's thesis, outlining the facts used by the author to support that thesis , and the "values" underlying the ideas.
• Putting what is read into a larger context by relating another's article or book to other work in the field, i.e. citing external sources in a similar field to support main thesis .
• Clearly and effectively communicating this information to a defined audience. In other words, you must write clearly and fully enough for your readers to know how you have arrived at your analyses and conclusions . DIRECTIONS: Read the essays carefully and make an outline. My Dog, Romeo My dog, Romeo, is the best pet anyone could have. He is easy to care for. Playing with him is lots of fun. He always takes care of me. There isn't a better pet anywhere. Romeo is easy to care. Caring for him is easy because I simply have to make sure he has fresh water and food every day. I exercise him by throwing his toys. Romeo doesn't require much care. Romeo has lots of fun to play with. He loves to play catch. When creating a thesis statement, its topic must be narrow enough that you can discuss it within the time and space that you have available for your assignment. That is because a broad topic will have too many options and too much material to cover for you to have any discernable direction to follow. One way to start narrowing your thesis is by questioning its topic with who? what? where? when? why? how? and which? Performing research can help you figure out which questions are most useful, and using one or more of them together can help you narrow a thesis quite well. However, be careful not to make your thesis's topic too narrow, as you might not be able to find enough to say about it. For an example of the questioning process, see the following example:

Broad thesis statement: Tree frogs need to be studied. Broad topic: tree frogs
