Cv & cover letter templates.

first time posting here, just wanted to share several LaTeX templates I made for writing matching CVs and cover letters. The repo is here:

https://github.com/antkr10/tex-cvbuilder

The main idea was to make a template that would allow cycling between different designs (themes) by changing a single variable. Hope someone finds these useful, I would appreciate any comments and feedback.

Lined Cover Letter

This template is defined by the horizontal lines at the top and bottom of the page and space for a logo at the top of the first page. The letter content displays your address and contact information first, followed by the addressee contact information, a subject and then the letter itself.

Description

This cover letter template features two prominent horizontal rules at the top and bottom of each page with space for a company/institution logo above the top rule on the first page. Below this, the letter first displays your contact information on the right of the page, followed by the addressee's information on the left. A prominent subject line is present for specifying the the role you are applying for and letter content follows. The letter can span multiple pages and the horizontal rules are maintained on subsequent pages.

Appendices

Sometimes the mundane things are the most painful. However, it doesn't have to be that way because of evolved, user-friendly templates. Thankfully, LaTeX allows for very quick letter writing, with little hassle.

  • 1 The letter class
  • 2.1 Using the envlab package
  • 2.2 Using the geometry package
  • 2.3 Printing
  • 3 Windowed envelopes
  • 4 Reference: letter.cls commands

The letter class

To write letters use the standard document class letter .

You can write multiple letters in one LaTeX file - start each one with \begin { letter }{ ''recipient'' } and end with \end { letter } . You can leave recipient blank. Each letter consists of four parts.

  • Opening (like \opening { Dear Sir or Madam, } or \opening { Dear Kate, } ).
  • Main body (written as usual in LaTeX). If you want the same body in all the letters, you may want to consider putting the entire body in a new command like \newcommand { \BODY }{ actual body } and then using \BODY in all the letters.
  • Closing (like \closing { Yours sincerely, } ). LaTeX will leave some space after closing for your hand-written signature; then it will put your name and surname, if you have declared them.
  • Additional elements: post scripta, carbon copy and list of enclosures.

If you want your name, address and telephone number to appear in the letter, you have to declare them first signature, address and telephone.

The output letter will look like this:

how to write a cover letter in latex

Here is the example's code:

To move the closing and signature parts to the left, insert the following before \begin { document } :

\longindentation =0pt

The amount of space to the left can be adjusted by increasing the 0pt.

Using the envlab package

The envlab package provides customization to the \makelabels command, allowing the user to print on any of an assortment of labels or envelope sizes. For example, beginning your LaTeX file the following way produces a document which includes the letter and a business-size (#10) envelope on the following page.

\documentclass{letter} \usepackage[businessenvelope]{envlab} \makelabels

Refer to the envlab user guide for more information about this capable package. Note that the envlab package has issues displaying characters outside the base ASCII character set, see this bug report for more information.

Using the geometry package

Here is a relatively simple envelope which uses the geometry package which is used because it vastly simplifies the task of rearranging things on the page (and the page itself).

% envelope.tex \documentclass{letter} \usepackage[left=1in,top=0.15in,papersize={4.125in,9.5in},landscape,twoside=false]{geometry} \setlength\parskip{0pt} \pagestyle{empty} \begin{document} FROM-NAME FROM-STREET ADDRESS FROM-CITY, STATE, \ ZIP \vspace{1.0in}\large \setlength\parindent{3.6in} TO-NAME TO-STREET ADDRESS TO-CITY, STATE, \ ZIP \end{document}

how to write a cover letter in latex

The above will certainly take care of the spacing but the actual printing is between you and your printer. One user reports that printing envelopes created with envlab is relatively painless. If you use the geometry package, you may find the following commands useful for printing the envelope.

Alternatively, you can use the latex dvi output driver.

In the first line, dvips command converts the .dvi file produced by latex into a .ps (PostScript) file. In the second line, the PostScript file is sent to the printer.

It is reported that pdflatex creates the right page size but not dvips despite what it says in the geometry manual. It will never work though unless your printer settings are adjusted to the correct page style. These settings depend on the printer filter you are using and in CUPS might be available on the lpr command line.

Windowed envelopes

An alternative to separately printing addresses on envelopes is to use the letter class from the KOMA package. It supports additional features like folding marks and the correct address placement for windowed envelopes. Using the scrlttr2 document class from the KOMA package the example letter code is:

The output is generated via

Folding the print of the resulting file koma_env.pdf according the folding marks it can be placed into standardized windowed envelopes DIN C6/5, DL, C4, C5 or C6.

In addition to the default, the KOMA-package includes predefined format definitions for different standardized Swiss and Japanese letter formats.

How to Write a Cover Letter for Your Manuscript? Here are the Tips and Examples

  • 3 minute read

Table of Contents

A cover letter is often the first thing an editor reads when reviewing your submission. As your first pitch to the editor, the cover letter helps them gauge the suitability of your manuscript for publication in their journal. Imagine your work shaping the future of your field, gathering citations, and sparking discussions. A powerful cover letter is thus the first step to making that vision into a reality.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of writing an effective cover letter and explain how you can get it right every time with examples. First, let us get started with the basics!

Getting the Basics Right

When writing a cover letter, it is crucial to address the editor by their correct and complete name¹ . If there are multiple co-editors, you can address your letter to the right person, based on their specialization or designated responsibilities. If unsure, it is okay to go with a more general salutation, such as “Dear Editors”¹ .

Presenting your Research

Provide a clear and concise title for your submission and specify whether it is an article, communication, review, perspective, or a manuscript belonging to some other category. If the journal guideline recommends, consider including a list of all authors in the manuscript.

After covering the preliminary information, briefly explain your paper’s central theme or focus to give the editor an idea of its contents. Ensure this stays a brief outline, without going into too much detail.

Conveying the Importance of Your Work

How you communicate the impact of your work can make or break your cover letter. To make a strong impression on the editor, articulate the significance of your research clearly, emphasizing its relevance to the field. Additionally, show how your work aligns with the journal’s scope and mission.

Including a Formal Declaration

Some journals require a set of declarations from you to ensure that your manuscript adheres to its ethical code and the larger ethical standards of scientific publishing. Here are the required declarations in a cover letter:

  • Originality of work:
  • Confirm that your work is original and has not been published elsewhere. This tells the editor your research is unique.
  • Conflict of interest statement:
  • Be clear about any potential conflicts of interest. This includes any personal, financial, or professional connections that might affect your research.
  • Funding source (if applicable):
  • Tell where your research funding came from, if any. This includes any support or grants from organizations.

Including Personal Suggestions for Reviewers on a Separate Page (optional)

If there is no part of the submission process that collects researcher suggestions for reviewers, and there are special requests from the researcher for reviewers (e.g., recommending the inclusion or suggesting the exclusion of a specific reviewer, etc.), you may also make a note about this in the cover letter.

Combining these five points, here is a good example of a cover letter for researchers’ reference:

Example of a Cover Letter

(This image is intended to demonstrate the norms of formatting and tone of expression in a cover letter, it is to be used only by the researcher as a reference in writing² .)

Conclusion

A strong cover letter can go a long way in ensuring success for researchers looking to publish their manuscripts! Your cover letter is the opening act, setting the stage for how editors perceive your manuscript. So, look at it not as just another formality but as a crucial opportunity to make a strong impression.

Understanding what to include, what is optional, and what is best left unsaid can be tricky. That is where our team of experts at Elsevier Language Services can step in. We will provide personalized recommendations and expert guidance to help you craft a cover letter that perfectly complements your manuscript. Cover letter for your manuscript

A cover letter can be used to help convey a work’s importance to the editors. It should also be used to highlight any potential issues such as related manuscripts currently under consideration in any other Springer Nature publication, as well as indicating whether you have had any prior discussions with a Springer Nature editor about the work described in the manuscript. Please use the cover letter to declare that the manuscript is not currently being considered for publication in any other journal and, if necessary, please include any reviewers you wish to recommend or exclude (including the reasons why). Finally, the cover letter is a good place to include any other issues or anything you were unsure of, that you have encountered whilst submitting your manuscript.

  • Take a look at the titling package. That makes this stuff pretty easy and is well-documented. It does depend on your class etc., though, so if you need further help, please post a Minimum Working Example showing what you've tried and your basic document set up. –  cfr Commented May 15, 2014 at 1:20
  • Although titling is a useful package, its documentation is a very hard read to novice users of LaTeX. –  Sverre Commented May 15, 2014 at 5:52

Without knowing the class you're using, here's an attempt.

The important option for geometry is pass , whereas showframe is just for showing that the cover page is centered on the page. If you already use geometry , just set its options and remove pass .

  • The 13pt option has no effect, did you mean 12pt ? Also, I wouldn't set the arraycolsep for all array s, what if he uses that environment elsewhere? Instead of using math mode, I would use two tabular s and add \setlength{\tabcolsep}{50pt} before the first. The center environment will localise that change, so it doesn't effect tables later in the document. –  Torbjørn T. Commented May 15, 2014 at 6:10
  • Nice suggestions. You're right. It's easier and nicer that way. Greetings. –  Sébastien Commented May 15, 2014 at 14:01
