English essay on “science a blessing or a curse” best essay, paragraph for class 9, 10, 11, and 12, science a blessing or a curse.

The gifts of science are indisputable and countless. There can be no denying the fact that science has made so much progress that the life of a man, society, nation and the world has advanced tremendously. The knowledge gained through science and scientific technology speaks volumes about man’s ingenuity and skill. If all this was not achieved by science it would be no wonder that even today, a man might have been the animal as he was in the ages past — i.e. just another animal. It is Science that has given us all the amenities of modern living that we can proudly boast of and enjoy.

The drudgery of household work has been reduced to almost nil by the numerous gifts of science. You have many tasks to do, and there is a machine to do them for you. In its social aspect, no matter where we want to go, whomsoever we want to meet, the scientist has helped us and we have umpteen scientific modes of traveling to and fro. We want entertainment; the radio and then the television is at our doorstep to do the job, in our drawing rooms or in the bedrooms. If we want to gain knowledge we have other media — books. This is also the result of the mechanization of solving problems. When we want to know more about other countries of the world, we have the internet to help us out. So, in a nutshell, we can say that the twins of science and mechanism have brought us out of the darkness of the woods. Let us understand that science and mechanization are the two sides of the same coin – science is the subject, and mechanization is the outcome. We can say the two are like two bodies and one soul.

Our lifestyle is now undoubtedly much above and the animal that of manages back. This journey has taken man centuries but, it has been worth it. Now, having studied the gifts of Science to mankind, it will do us some good if we do some introspection and try also to study how, and to what extent we are now misusing our scientific knowledge. As far as science is helping man to make life better it is very good but, does a man stop there? He continues his so-called study and research which further leads him on to the destructive capability of science. We are in for making bombs, using nuclear energy for purposes of destruction. Today man has the most destructive weapons ever produced. One bomb can annihilate civilization. In the event of a third world war, there is no doubt that man will perish. It is at this aspect of scientific growth we must put a stop to whose gain will it be if the world is destroyed? I am sure it will benefit none. Yes, none at all. We must understand that we should not pursue the track that leads to annihilation. All the gifts of science must be enjoyed to the full and that can happen only if man survives to taste the fruits of mechanization. Production of destructive weapons the greatest curse of science to men.

On the home front also it is felt that too much mechanization, accounts for our inability to work for own self. We get so used to machines that our bodies get absolutely frozen and become unfit to do any work. Moving about all the time in cars makes our physique. This creeps several diseases. We become basically very lazy.

On the national front, mechanization has led to industrialization which, in turn, has given birth to extensive unemployment and capitalism. Machines being devices to save labor have mercilessly thrown thousands out of employment, and capitalism has led to class struggle. The big capitalists exploiting the poor laborers.

At the lowest and smallest level of life, man has lost his own humaneness as though he himself has become a machine. He has got so enmeshed in the machines that he has lost all contact with his own species that make for his live company. This live company has been sacrificed for the mechanical idiot box. As soon as a man loses touch with his kin, he is most likely to become a machine whose company he keeps all the while. The human touch which was so special about a family and society is getting lost as every individual has become more or less a machine.

Besides these mundane and down-to-earth results of scientific growth, there is one very important aspect which has got lost. Science leaves no place to accommodate God or religion. The scientific and mechanical mind can understand only what he sees or something that can be explained with some amount of reasoning. God and religion are two things that can have no mathematical formulae to explain. Today’s man cannot understand this so-called foolish premise of the existence of any God.

This disbelief in God is leading to further degeneration of the family and the society, the two essential composites of a healthy nation. There does not in today’s context seem to be any force that can convince man of the necessity of being God-fearing and thus being good. Man understands only what he can see and these days his vision is too blurred to see the place of God in the scheme of things. This irreligious attitude of man is further bringing down to the lowest ebb, the sensitivity of our very beings.

Thus we see that the blessings of science through innumerable, have a matching number of abuses. The abuses are so great that they even pose the danger of complete annihilation of the human race, both physically and mentally and of course spiritually. Looking at the sum total of the scenario the abuses outnumber the blessings. This is because man is basically destructive by nature and getting too much scientific know-how will only confirm his doom.

Science is a Blessing or Curse Essay is here on IlmiHub.com . This is an important essay for those outstanding students who are looking for the material for examinations. However, other people can also learn it for general knowledge and job tests. Science, a Curse or Blessing Essay will discuss the uses and abuses of science .

Science is a Blessing or Curse Essay with Quotes for Class 10, Class 12 (2nd Year) and Graduation Examination

“Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.” (Edwin Powell Hubble)

Man is curious by nature. He wishes to uncover the mysterious things. So he has concentrated on various issues and explored the several hidden truths. Science has helped him in his efforts to do so. As far as the question of science is a blessing or curse is concerned, it is obvious that everything has its uses and abuses. Science can be used both as a curse or a blessing. It totally depends on the human beings how they prefer to use it. The usage of these gifts of science for a positive aim will surely give sweet results but its negative usage will result in disasters. So it would be difficult to declare science as a curse or a blessing.

Undoubtedly, science has helped mankind achieve fantastic mental growth. Science has provided humans a vision to explore the secrets of nature. We have already made the world “a small place to live” and have gone even out of our own planet. We are exploring the depth of the earth. We have been able to increase the longevity, reduced the decaying effect of nature on the human body.

“A man of science is just a student of nature and derives his inspiration from science” (C.V. Romanas)

With the help of medical science, man has achieved tremendous success. Scientists are now finding the cure for fatal diseases by making extraordinary drugs and medicines. There was a time when diseases such as malaria, influenza and tuberculosis were considered to be incurable. But now even some forms of cancer are curable. All this would not have been possible if medical science had not progressed.

Science has also benefitted us in the production and preservation of foods. The construction of our homes and the improvement in communication and transportation. It is through the help of science that man has become more rational and realistic. It would be unthankful on our part if we don’t identify how vast benefits modern technology has offered us.

But this is one side of the picture. Some people are of the view that science is a chief cause of human sufferings. They have reasons to say that science and its applications are not, on the whole, good for mankind. Industrialism brought new troubles. It proved harmful to cottage industry; hence it caused unemployment. It introduced new machines and supported the cruelty of the capitalists over the labourers. The rich gained much by exploiting the poor workers. The use of machinery to the service of man resulted in more evils.

“The machine does not isolate man from the great problems of nature but plunges him more deeply into them.” (Antoine de Saint)

How can we forget the day of August 6, I945 when the first atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima by the US. Military? Three days later, the United States, dropped a second atom bomb on the city of Nagasaki bringing World War ll to an end. In total, more than 140,000 people were estimated to be killed.

In the social field, the use of science has also produced bad results. The use of machinery has given a new speed to man’s life and activity. He has become materialistic. The moral values of life are now considered things of the past. The system of joint family has shattered. Art and literature have been badly affected by the impact of mechanization. Medicines and other surgical aids are available to the people but these have not promoted a better standard of health. On the other hand, millions of dollars are being spent on the inventions of dangerous war weapons. In the modern world, corruption and lust are also gifts of science. Man’s life is becoming more and more artificial.

“If there is technological advance without social advance, there is, almost automatically, an increase in human misery, in impoverishment.” (Michael Harrington)

From the above discussion on the merits and demerits of science . we can conclude that science is actually neither a blessing nor a curse. It is what man makes of it. Science can be the greatest of the blessings or the worst of the curses. In fact, science is not to be blamed but the man who uses it badly. Science has neither urged man to invent destructive weapons nor forced him to be materialistic selfish and greedy. If we don’t use it for constructive purposes it is obviously not the fault of science but ours. Science is only a servant and it depends on us how we get services from it. Science surely offers innumerable benefits to humankind but we need to use it sensibly and wisely.

“Why does this magnificent applied science, which saves work and makes life easier bring us so little happiness? The simple answer runs: Because we have not yet learned to make sensible use of it.” (Albert Einstein)

Essay No. 01

Science- A Blessing or A Curse

Science has revolutionized the human existence. Much of the progress that mankind has made in different fields right from the stone age to the modern age is due to the progress made in the field of science. Not only material progress but also the mental outlook of man has been influenced by it. It has made man’s life more comfortable. Agriculture, business, transport, communication and medicine to name a few are all highly indebted to the wonders science has produced.

Electricity is one of the greatest wonders of modern science. It is a source of energy. It can run any type of machinery. With the help of electricity, we can light our rooms run buses and trains, and lift water for irrigation.

The discovery and development of a large number of powerful energy sources coal, petroleum, natural gas, electricity, etc. have facilitated the growth of fast modes of transport an communication, which in turn have changed the world into a global village. Science has given man the means of travelling cars, trains, ships, etc. Man has even travelled to the moon. Faster means of transport can be utilized for sending food grains to victims of famine or epidemics across the globe, for transporting armed men for fighting in distant places.

Science has benefited agriculture too. The food production levels and quality have improved. Soil analysis, hybrid verities of crops, fertilizers, pesticides, advanced tools and machinery, improved irrigation methods, etc. have all contributed to the increase of the production of crops.

Today we have metrological satellites in outer space sending data and pictures to earth stations helping agriculture scientists find and analyses soil patterns. They also help them trace the progress of rains winds and even locusts that endanger crops. Satellites can even forewarn about natural calamities like hurricanes which cause mass destruction.

Man with the help of science, has been able to increase longevity, arrest the gradual decay of human body and control the spread of lethal diseases by making extraordinary life prolonging drugs and medicines. Diseases like tuberculosis and many kinds of cancer which were considered fatal a few decades ago are no longer incurable.

One of the biggest achievements of science is in the field of entertainment. Leisure management industry, with television shows, music concerts and films, is emerging as emerging as the largest and the most important industry in the twenty first century satellite television has made it possible for millions of people to watch sporting and entertainment events taking place in different parts of the world simultaneously.

Information technology and computer have revolutionized our lifestyle. Automation in banks and railways stations has provided relief to the public and staff alike. Ticketing and reservation have become more efficient and convenient. In medical diagnosis, computers are used to locate and investigate accurately and reservation have become more efficient convenient. In medical diagnosis, computers are used to locate and investigate accurately and precisely any abnormalities or diseases. The internet has some very useful applications in our day to day life. Mobile phones are the outcome of information technology. But at the same time it cannot be denied that the boon in many cases has turned out to be the bane. There are innumerable examples which prove that science a blessing has been turned into a curse.

Sir Alfred Nobel experience with dynamite to clear huge mountains to turn it into productive lands. But modern man uses it to kill his fellow human beings and destroy nature. It is a fact that much of the national income of a developing country is spent on acquiring latest weapons, bombs and missiles. Guns, revolvers, tanks and fighter planners’ explosives nuclear bombs, etc were invented to develop a strong security system to protect the innocent masses, but their misuse is now crushing humanity. Apart from atomic weapons man has also started stockpiling biological and chemical weapons. These weapons are equally dangerous.

Biotechnology is a great boon for fighting disease. But along with medicines lethal biological weapons have also been developed. Germs are deliberately released into the air to spread diseases. Anthrax envelopes are used for spreading terrorism.

The negative effects of the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, used to increase yield are now evident. Soil salinity has increases. Traces of DDT are found in plants.

The power of the internet is also being abused through unhealthy practice such as the widespread use of pornographic materials. Lots of people spend their time in chat rooms for obscene discussions.

Science has two faces good and bad. It depends on us which face we want to see. If we use the gifts of science in a positive manner with positive intention and in positive direction it will benefit the mankind, but if we misuse it, it will prove harmful to all. To save ourselves and the world as a whole from destruction, we should use the gifts of science properly.

Essay No. 2

Science – A Blessing or Curse

This is the age of science and technology. Science has changed the face of the earth with its too many wonderful inventions and discoveries. If one of our ancestors were to return to the earth, he or she would not be able to recognize it – so tremendous, complete and fundamental has been the change.

Science has benefited mankind in an unprecedented manner by its wonderful progress and development. And still the development, research, inventions and discoveries are going on a very fast track. These are of fundamental nature and of far reaching consequences, also much so that the world would get further transformed unrecognizably.

Science touches all of us and our life at every step, as a big boon and blessing. It has helped us to conquer space and time. The world has now become a global village, thanks to very fast and reliable means of travel and communication. Science has also helped man to conquer the moon and to explore the outer space. Many a fatal disease is now checked and eradicated. The great and significant researches in the fields, of agriculture, irrigation, water – management, etc,. have helped in developing new variety of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and effective methods of water conservation. These benefits and facilities were not available to our forefathers.

The use of computers and super computers has further revolutionized our life and work with the dawn of scientific era, the barriers of the nations are crumbling fast and the international living and interaction are very much in sight. Nations and countries have come close rand isolation has  been eliminated. A new composite culture marked with greater tolerance and understanding , and secularism is now assured. In a sense, science has unified the world and reduced differences in outlook and thinking. By removing many superstitions and blind beliefs, modern science has inculcated scientific temper and spirit in man to great extent.

Because of science and technology there has been tremendous progress in the fields of industry, commerce and human resources development as well. Consequently, there is a new world economic order in sight and the gap between the developed and developed countries are being reduced. The new economic order ensures a great industrial and corporate cooperation, globalization, expansion and liberalization among the nations. The quality of life and standard of living, in various underdeveloped and developing countries, have improved and the countries are likely to be upgraded further. The contribution of science in the betterment of human life has been great and significant and further expectations from it are no less significant or great. The boons and blessings of science assure us further strengthening of human equality, fraternity and liberty.

Man feels more safe, secure, comfortable and important. Today than ever before, because of scientific development and advancement. The day is not far off when we shall have colonies on the moon and the planets. Science has achieved much, and promises to achieve still more and more in the years to come. Science has tamed forces of nature, conquered space  and time, eradicated  may fatal diseases given us food clothing etc. , enough to spare. Now there are no more famines, epidemics and pestilences. Science ahs even pushed further  the threats of death and increased the average longevity of man.

But science has been a mixed blessing. It has been a boon and blessing in certain fields; it has also proved a curse and bane in many others. It has given us many dangerous and destructive weapons like atom and hydrogen bombs and missiles. During the second world War itself 300,000 people died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the USA dropped atom bombs there in 1945. The biological and chemical weapons  are still more destructive. The bombs and other means of mass destruction now produced are far more lethal and powerful than used in 1945. The biological and chemical weapons are still more dangerous and destructive. They have the added advantage, as the source of attack can remain hidden and unidentified to a great extent. These weapons can be used to declaration of war. Then there are well- organized terrorist groups spread all over the world. They use these weapons in their desperation and sue unprecedented deaths and ruination.

Shakespeare has said that there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. There have been many scientific researches and discoveries which have unfortunately been hijacked to harmful destructive paths. It is reported that about half a million scientists are now employed on weapon research through hour the world. The huge amount of money spent on these dangerous recherché fan    exceeds the amount of money being spent on developing technologies for new energy resources, improving human health, raising agricultural productivity, controlling  pollution, etc.

At the end of the last world war, many of the scientists were taken away by the victorious countries for developing their own biological and chemical war  weapons. It is alleged that the outbreak of plague in India in 1994 was genetically engineered.

Obviously, science is being used so much for destructive purpose and so little for meeting real needs of humanity. This turns science into a bane. It is man who is ultimately responsible for turning science into a curse instead a blessing. By itself science can be said to  a blessing , boon or bonanza; the bane and cures are brought about by our wrong orientation and priorities.

The misuse of science has ushered in our life many undesirable elements. There has been erosion in man’s faith in sod and religion. Morality and ethics have been marginalized and materialism has increased unprecedented. Rapid , unplanned and indiscriminate industrialization has resulted in pollution on a vast scale. No doubt , science and technology has taken giant strides in recent times, but it has dehumanized human life in the same proportion.

Human values have been pushed in the background and man has become more selfish, cruel , sensual, violent and destructive. There is no more simple living and high thinking. But let us hope that ultimately sanity prevails and science is used more and more for the benefit of mankind. It depends solely upon man himself how he uses science and its discoveries and researches. Science as knowledge and power is neither savior nor destroyer.

Essay No. 03

Science is a Blessing, not a Curse

Science is important in today’s life. We cannot live without science in the modern world. Science can be called one of the greatest blessings of this age. We owe all our progress to it. Today we can go round the globe in a matter of hours. Inventions such as washing machine, refrigerator, air-conditioner, dishwasher and geyser make our lives easy. Television, cinema and compact discs have changed the entertainment industry. Thousands of lives are saved every day due to the progress of medical science. It is impossible to run a company or a factory without a computer. We can also say that computers are the greatest invention of modern age. However., r science has also brought a lot of misery upon man. Nuclear weapons can destroy our planet several times over.

It is not impossible to remove at least some of the curses of  science. We must resolve to use it only to make life better for man. We must also not pollute our planet or cut trees any more. We must not build any more arms until every man has food on his plate. In this way, we can build a better world. Science is, at its heart, a quest; a quest whose goal is to create an understanding of the universe. In fact, science attempts to quantify reality. It does this in many ways; through experimentation and observation, through theorizing and testing. This quest has been undergoing since the birth of mankind and yet the further we go the further away the end of the quest seems to be. Despite this, it has been theorized that man will eventually understand the universe through science and its relentless quest for knowledge. Not only has it been said that this is likely, but it has been said that this understanding lies mere decades away from the present. Is this possible, not only mere decades from the present, but is it possible, at all, to achieve an understanding of the universe? In short, no. The extended answer, however, takes a little more time.

First, to begin the answer to this question, it is necessary to understand what is meant by understanding the universe. It means “the act of one who comes to know the meaning of; who apprehends”. Well, in the realm of science, understanding the universe would probably entail the creation of a TOE (Theory of Everything). The TOE is to the theoretical physicist as the holy grail was to King Arthur; it is the most desirable peak of achievement. To the uninitiated, a TOE is a theorem that explains, literally, everything, from the motion of subatomic particles to the existence of black holes and the motion of galaxies. The TOE would, in effect, explain the behaviour and nature of everything in the universe. It could, in effect be a way through which we could understand the universe and it has been theorized that such a theory is not far away.

Does this theory, however, if it is created, indicate that we do understand in full, the nature of the universe. The answer is, simply Put, no; not in any regards at all. First of all, the creation of a TOE that works does not even mean that it is right. It is possible that any formula created may function out of mere coincidence instead of out of a profound truth. Discounting this fact for a moment, the  creation of a formula in no way imparts understanding. Man has discovered and expressed the speed of light (in vacuum) as being 3 x 10 8 m/s. However, this in no way means that everyone understands this and, in fact, it is improbable that anyone can even begin to imagine this speed. Thus, how can we hope to derive understanding out of a formula that would be almost infinitely more complicated then a mere number? The answer is, of course, that most of us, if not all, could not begin to understand such a formula much less its implications or meanings. Why, however, can we not hope to understand such things? Are we not sane, rational beings? Well, to put it simply, human beings seem far to simple to actually understand the universe in all of its entirety, even if it is reduced to a formula. It has been theorized that there are hundreds of billions of galaxies each containing an equal number of solar systems. Despite this, most stars’ closest neighbour is more than 10 light years away. How could a human mind, being comprised such a tiny amount of brain cells, hope to understand something so big? The fact is that there is such a limited capacity in the human mind that such understanding almost unequivocally escapes us.

Science – A Blessing or A Curse

Science has benefited man in several ways. It has made man’s life more comfortable, more secure and more powerful. But it is not an unmixed blessing. There are several disadvantages of science.  However, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

In the early stages of civilization, man used to be scared of the natural forces. Thunder, storm and lightning frightened him. He used to worship every object of nature-sky, earth, trees, air, sun and moon. Even animals were worshipped. It was because man could not understand the natural phenomena and he wanted to keep those forces happy. So he did that by bowing before them. He believed that if he kept those forces happy, they would not hurt him. He was, in short, a slave of nature.  But today, man has become the master of nature. His area of knowledge is vast, his power over nature immense. His mastery of the sky and the earth is nearly complete. The moon and other objects no longer fill man with fear. The earth holds few secrets not known to man. How has this tremendous change come about?

Science has revolutionized the human existence. Take, for instance, electricity which is one of the many gifts of science. All one has to do is to press a button.  The room is flooded with light, the fan begins to whirr and give refreshing air, or still more, a desert cooler or an air conditioner turns the room into a hill resort. Thousand types of machines are run by electricity. Room heaters, electric ovens and cooking ranges and several other household appliances are operated by electricity. It runs factories which produce innumerable things of our daily use.

Science has also relieved to a great extent human suffering. Advance in the field of medicine and surgery have reduced the rate of infant mortality. The average life span of man has increased. Today, many the dreaded diseases like cholera, small-pox and even tuberculosis are easily curable with the help of medicines. Surgery can remove malignant also proved to be harmful. The machine age made many people unemployed. Now there is no need for so many hands to do a task. Only one person is required to manipulate the machine. Thus, it has led to unemployment.

Machines have also led to degradation of our environment. The poisonous fumes and gases emitted by vehicles and industrial units have polluted the air we breathe and pose a threat to the health of the people.

In the light of all these grave dangers, it is imperative that man tries to make judicious use of machines. After all, man had applied his mind to invent new things not to make his life miserable, but to make it more comfortable and better.  Machines should serve mankind. Man should ensure that he does not allow them to destroy his environment and health and put the life of all living things in grave danger beyond a point of no return.

Feature image of Short Essay on My Favourite Subject Science

In our school days, as a student, we have to study lots of subjects altogether. It feels hectic to control so many at a time. Yet among all of these, some subjects really occupy our hearts. It is our favourite of all and soon it becomes the target of our higher studies.

For me, however, science is my favourite subject. I have forever admired it as my best. I love scientific experiments and how science is helping us daily to better ourselves. If science would not have been there, then it would have been impossible to develop in any way. Science is one of the bases for human development and hence one of my favourite subjects.

All of us have one subject in our school that we admire a lot. It is our favourite and something that we want to read in the future. For me, that subject is science. In school, some subjects were good, while others felt too tough to study.

I really did not like to read everything. But among all, science was the only one I loved. I still enjoy knowing about it. Science means experiments. The book contains pictures of so many experiments that I enjoy reading. The laboratory contains so many materials for that purpose. I love science as it does not allow superstitions. It depends on reason and facts. I enjoy how regular research for our development is taking place due to the help of science.

Today we have realized the importance of science. Even in a pandemic, we have received vaccines and medicines in little time. Medical treatments are well developed now, and all diseases can be cured easily. Science is one of the reasons for the development of India. Several vehicles for communication are present today.

The Universe is no longer unknown to us. We realize how our nature is constantly helping us. The industries are enabling us a better future. In fact, robots are now used for serving human needs. This enormous success of humans is actually the blessing of scientific studies. So I dream to become a researcher and study this beautiful field.

Everyone in our school has written an essay on science as a curse or a boon. It is a debate if science actually helps us or destroys us further. But beyond everything, I love to study science as it is my favourite subject. In school, we read several subjects.

We love to study some, while others become quite boring. For me, science was that one subject that I enjoyed a lot. In fact, till today I love to study scientific information and the development that is daily enriching our lives. The best thing about it is that it does not allow any superstition. Science is based upon reason and analysis of facts. So it is impossible to have any ill knowledge where there is the cultivation of science.

I started loving science when our teacher showed us some fun experiments. I soon realized science is not some word in the books, but a fact-based subject. The books were pretty, they had lots of pictures. But I did not feel excited about knowing it till I understood the truth behind this subject. Science is observing and analyzing something properly.

The scientific laws are examples of such deeper studies made by several scientists. Only logic and reason create science. This idea caught my mind. I started taking interest in this subject and soon it became my best subject. The laboratory became my favourite place, where I did all the experiments I read in the textbook. Even today I love to read science fiction, journals, and the interviews of many scientists and increase my knowledge about this topic.

Another reason for making science my favourite subject is that we develop because of science. Science saves us from the severity of the calamities. Human beings are ever curious to know about the world and the Universe. Science has enabled them in this process. Everything is scientific. Medical procedures are rapidly changing for the benefit of mankind.

New medicines, vaccines are being invented to fight the most deadly virus. Industries are ever-growing; several forms of communication are available today; equipment like phones, TV, washing machine, inductions, etc. are our daily need; alternative ways to collect rain, dispose of garbage, create electricity are available. Robots are now human help. All of these are blessings of science. Science has shown us an efficient lifestyle. Even the farthest planet is now known to us. Science has made the impossible come true. So I will forever love to study and research on this subject.

In today’s lesson, I have written the essays in a very simple language for a better understanding of all kinds of students. If you still have any doubts regarding this lesson, kindly let me know through the comment section below. To read more about such seasons, keep browsing our website.

He Brought Two Toothbrush Kits on Their First Date

Bryan Braswell knew crab curry could get a little messy on his first date with Caroline White at a Sri Lankan restaurant. So he came prepared.

A bride and groom look at each other standing outside their wedding venue, and are holding hands. There is a weather vane atop a turret behind them.

By Rosalie R. Radomsky

Bryan Emil Braswell knew his favorite crab curry dish could get a little messy. So he came prepared on his first date with Caroline Octavia White in October 2020 at Sigiri, a Sri Lankan restaurant in the East Village of Manhattan.

He pulled out two toothbrush kits after he ordered the dish for them.

“She laughed when I gave it to her,” Mr. Braswell said. (In the end, he used the toothbrush and floss; she did not.)

In September, Ms. White had swiped right on Hinge, intrigued by a photo of him standing in front of a painting. She figured, like her, he could be an artist. Or, at the very least, interested in art.

“We had these side hustles,” said Ms. White, a ceramist. She was thrilled when he turned out to be a painter.

She runs Grayson White Ceramics in a studio in her parents’ converted garage in Montclair, N.J., making earthy tableware — mainly mugs and bowls — as well as her signature black ink splattered white stoneware.

Ms. White, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Wesleyan and received an M.B.A. from Simmons School of Management in Boston, is also a vice president of communications at Wells Fargo, the financial services company.

Mr. Braswell, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, where he also received a master’s of public administration, painted large acrylic-on-canvas portraits, influenced by pop art and street art, in his South Bronx apartment.

Mr. Braswell recently became the operations analyst at the Gateway Development Commission in New York, overseeing the expansion of the railway infrastructure from Penn Station to Newark, N.J.

As the two messaged on Hinge, Mr. Braswell, who had been catfished once, quickly got Ms. White’s phone number, and reached out in an “unsolicited” FaceTime to make sure she was real.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” he said. “She was warm and friendly.” Another surprise: He and Ms. White, who has a twin brother, share the same birthday — Aug. 15, 1986. (Her parents now call them “the triplets.”)

So he asked to see her driver’s license as proof. “She passed inspection,” he said with a laugh.

When they finally met in mid-October after work, “he had the kindest eyes,” she said, a feature emphasized by the fact that they were both wearing masks. After dinner, they stopped at a now-closed bar that was auspiciously called August, like their birthday month. They shared a dish of ice cream.

Later that evening, she pulled away when he tried to hold her hand. “It was a swing and a miss,” he said.

They hugged goodbye, and he set up a surprise date for that weekend — a private D.J. lesson in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Later they had tacos and margaritas at a Mexican restaurant, and not only held hands, but also shared a first kiss.

As they chatted in her parked car, he mentioned that he would be moving to Denver for a job with a nonprofit organization in December.

“I was playing it cool,” she said, but was taken aback.

A few days later, while she was in the Poconos with her brother and his friends, he texted asking if she wanted to continue seeing him.

“If not, then that’s OK,” he added when there was a pause. “I’ve enjoyed getting to know you.”

She called him as soon as she saw that message, and cleared the air. The delays were “due to bad cell service,” she said.

They began dating seriously, and after Christmas she visited him in Denver, where she worked remotely for about a month and a half.

In January 2022, as she was about to move to Colorado, Mr. Braswell got a job in New York. So instead, they moved into a Harlem brownstone. They fell into a rhythm of visiting museums and galleries, and he ran in Central Park and along the Hudson River.

On April 1, 2022, with her father’s blessing, he proposed during her mother’s 70th surprise birthday party. “Bryan gets up to speak,” she recalled. “I see this line of people coming in. I see his cousin from Atlanta. His mom. Oh my gosh!”

After he got down on one knee, she said, “I do,” followed quickly by “Yes.”

On May 3, Jor-El Caraballo, a Universal Life minister and an Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity brother of the groom, officiated their wedding before 160 guests at Pleasantdale Château, an events venue in West Orange, N.J. The couple, both 37, jumped the broom in the African-American tradition, and their first dance was to the Isley Brothers’ “Voyage to Atlantis.”

“All my groomsmen got a travel toothbrush kit in their gift bags,” Mr. Braswell said.
