Like for undergraduates, many scholarships and fellowships are available to students seeking a master's degree.

Scholarships are usually merit-based – such as for a certain GPA, athletic ability or hobby – or based on a student's specific area of study or identity.

While it's well known that financial aid exists for undergraduates, many students are unaware that scholarships also are available for those seeking a graduate degree .

Funding amounts and availability of scholarships for graduate students vary by program, but every dollar counts, experts say.

The application process differs depending on the graduate scholarship, but may require filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA , writing an essay and submitting a letter of recommendation .

For prospective professional and graduate students, here are some points to consider when tracking down scholarships to pay for an advanced degree .

The Difference Between Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are forms of financial aid that don't need to be paid back, also known as "gift aid."

They "can come in all kinds of amounts and students can apply for several at a time to help cover the cost of tuition," Suzanne T. Ortega, president of the Council of Graduate Schools, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and advancing graduate education, wrote in an email.

Grants, however, are typically awarded at the college , state or federal level based on financial need, like the federal Pell Grant for low-income students. Pell Grants are generally for undergraduate students, but graduate students may be eligible for other federal grants.

"There are different resources for graduate students that aren't available to undergraduate students," says Deanne Rivera, graduate student funding specialist at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate Division . "For example, if a graduate student is teaching an undergraduate course, that's something that they receive a salary for and then also, in some cases, like a tuition waiver or tuition remission."

Where to Look for Graduate School Scholarships

Different types of national graduate school scholarships are listed on database search websites, like Fastweb , Appily and Unigo . GoGrad is another online resource that lists niche scholarships for prospective and current grad students.

"Often, what is called a scholarship in the undergraduate sphere is frequently called a fellowship in the graduate sphere," Ortega says. "So be sure to look for fellowships as well."

Students can reach out to the school's financial aid office or talk with a program department head or adviser to learn about degree- or research-specific scholarships.

Graduate students should also not look past applying to local scholarships , which are usually less competitive than national scholarships, experts say. A student's employer , parent's employer or even place of worship, like a church or synagogue, may offer scholarships.

Students shouldn't have to pay to apply to scholarships, says Shannon Vasconcelos, senior director of college finance at Bright Horizons College Coach, a college admissions consulting firm.

"There's scammy organizations out there that will charge you and guarantee they'll find lots of scholarship money for you," she says. "Anytime there's guarantees and you have to pay money, I would keep my antenna up for those kinds of things."

But applying to scholarships through professional associations is an exception, Vasconcelos adds.

"Sometimes you do have to pay a membership fee to be a member of this organization that awards the scholarships," she says. "I would just get look carefully at your chances of winning the scholarship compared to how much the membership fee is. And does a membership in this organization come with other benefits that would make that membership fee worthwhile?"

When to Apply for Scholarships for Grad School

Deadlines for scholarships vary, but Ortega advises students to start their search as soon as they're accepted into a graduate program – if not before.

"You can apply to scholarships year-round, so always be on the lookout for new ones that pop up," she says. "Even if you planned to take out a student loan, you can still apply for scholarships to help reduce the amount of loan you need."

What's the Best Strategy to Win a Scholarship?

For private, outside scholarships, it's important to read the requirements of the award and determine who's eligible, Vasconcelos says.

"You don't want to spend a ton of time applying for a scholarship only to find out it's not actually available to graduate students," she says. "I think grad students maybe just need to be a little more careful in reviewing requirements – though, of course, everybody has to do that."

Students should also understand the awarding organization's mission, Vasconcelos says.

"Make sure you let that organization know that you getting this scholarship will allow you to forward their mission in some way," she says. "I think that's easier to do at the graduate level when you have maybe more of an established work history, you have a more specific vision of what you want your future career to be, as opposed to an undergraduate student, who is just starting out, is less clear on a future vision."

Before submitting a scholarship application, have a peer or undergraduate adviser review the application for grammar mistakes and other errors, experts say.

"An advantage of applying for scholarships as a graduate student versus an undergraduate is that you have more life and educational experience to draw from when writing a scholarship essay ," Ortega says. "Since graduate school programs are more focused on a specific area, it’s easier to speak to why you are pursuing this degree or area of research, which may be a compelling story for the scholarship application."

Current and future teachers alike understand the role of professional development in their ability to grow as educators. For many, graduate school is necessary, but they may find it challenging to fund a master’s degree in education.

Fortunately,  scholarships for education majors are often available, and grants for teachers to get a master’s degree. Many scholarships and grants are not based solely on financial need, providing options to even more candidates. 

Grants for Teachers Looking to Get a Master’s Degree

These are some of the most well-known grants for teachers to get a master’s degree:

TEACH Federal Grant

The  TEACH Grant  is a federal student aid program that awards up to $4,000 per year to students who meet the qualifying criteria after completing their FAFSA form. It is a free grant, but those who receive it must “repay” it by teaching in a low-income school or an underserved area for four years.

James Madison Graduate Fellowship

Known as one of the most prestigious teaching grants in the country, the  James Madison Graduate Fellowship  awards up to $24,000 to qualified teachers who intend to work at the secondary level and plan to focus their careers on civics, government, or history. The James Madison Graduate Fellowship grant is awarded to one student per state during each academic year.

Knowles Teaching Fellows Program

This grant cannot be applied directly to a graduate degree program. However, teachers can put it toward professional development or other programs that allow them to build their skills as educators. Each year, 35 fellowships are awarded to teachers in the first five years of their careers. It is a  five-year fellowship  valued at about $150,000.

Fund for Teachers

Fund for Teacher  is a versatile grant available to any teacher interested in professional development. Teachers awarded the grant receive a one-time payment of up to $5,000. Two teachers can apply as a team and receive a payout of $10,000. Grant funding can be put toward learning opportunities anywhere in the world.

Mathematics Study & Professionalism Grants

This grant is available to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics members. The  Program of Mathematics Study & Active Professionalism Grants  will award up to $24,000 to qualified teachers interested in pursuing a graduate degree to further their mathematics teaching careers. It is available to members working with students in preschool through 12th grade.

Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

The  Segal AmeriCorps Education Award  is available to teachers who have completed an AmeriCorps term of service. Recipients can use it to repay qualified student loans or to pursue a graduate degree. The award amount varies from year to year; in 2023, it was worth nearly $7,000.

The Ruth Crymes TESOL Fellowship for Graduate Study

The  Ruth Crymes TESOL Fellowship for Graduate Study  awards $1,500 to one teacher annually who intends to pursue a career teaching English as a second language. It is designed to support graduate students who want to improve their classroom instruction.

AFCEA  offers a variety of STEM scholarships to undergraduate students that can help them finance their bachelor’s degree while saving for their master’s. Their scholarships range from $2,500 to $5,000 and are available to sophomore and junior education students at four-year universities.

NCTM 7-12 Secondary Teacher Course Work Scholarships

The  National Council for Teachers of Mathematics  offers secondary teacher coursework scholarships that are valued at up to $10,000. These scholarships are available to teachers looking to further their education to pursue a career teaching secondary-level mathematics.

PDK Prospective Educator Scholarships

The  PDK Prospective Educator Scholarships  are available to students interested in earning a master’s degree in education to teach in public education. More than 100 scholarships are available, some of which are one-time payouts, while others are renewable. Scholarships are valued between $500 and $4,000.

Montessori Teacher Education Scholarships

The  American Montessori Society  offers a teacher education scholarship program for teachers who specialize in the Montessori approach and are interested in professional development opportunities. Typically, several dozen teachers are chosen each year to receive the award, and scholarship totals have reached nearly $60,000.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

The  Hispanic Scholarship Fund  is available to students of Hispanic heritage interested in a higher education degree program. More than 10,000 merit-based scholarships are awarded each year, ranging in value from $500 to $5,000 based on the student’s individual needs.

The Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship

The  Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship  is a $2,000 scholarship available to Black or African American NAACP members under the age of 25 who intend to enroll in a full-time undergraduate or graduate degree program. It is a merit-based scholarship awarded according to financial need.

Nancy Larson Foundation College Scholarship

The  Nancy Larson Foundation College Scholarship  is designed for undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in elementary education. The foundation awards five $1,500 scholarships annually to qualified students.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Wells Fargo Scholarship

The  Thurgood Marshall College Fund Wells Fargo Scholarship  is available to qualified students attending one of the TMCF member schools, primarily composed of Historically Black Colleges and Primarily Black Institutions. The fund awards 138 students annually with scholarships valued at up to $5,000 and can be applied toward tuition and fees.

Future Teacher Scholarship

The  Future Teacher Scholarship  is offered to high school graduates from Oklahoma who agree to teach in regions of the state or country with a teaching shortage. The scholarship is valued at $1,500 and can be renewed if the recipient fills out an additional application the following year.

Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers

The  Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers  is available to Texas students interested in pursuing a career in education. This scholarship provides  $8,000 to $10,000 in financial support and can be used at specific university-based education training programs in the state. Currently, more than 350 students have received this scholarship.

National Merit Scholarship Program

The  National Merit Scholarship Program  is an academic competition that awards scholarships based on students’ PSAT scores. Students whose scores qualify them for the scholarship earn $2,500 in funds that can be applied toward tuition and fees at a college or university of their choosing, making this one of the most coveted scholarships among high school graduates.

What are scholarships and bursaries?

Scholarships and bursaries for Masters degrees are provided by a range of organisations, including universities, private companies, charities and the government. However, there are some differences between them.

• Scholarships  are non-repayable sums of money typically awarded on the basis of academic excellence. They often come with strings attached - such as working for a specific company after you graduate, or taking on additional responsibilities within the university. Winning a scholarship is usually a competitive process.
• Bursaries  (or grants as they're often referred to) are also non-repayable, but these lump sums or annual stipends are available to any student who qualifies for them. This could be students on a specific course, those in the most financial need, or groups that are underrepresented on a course or in an area of work.

Some postgraduate scholarships and bursaries are specifically designed to pay for tuition fees, others to help with living costs. They may cover all your expenses or just make a small but useful contribution - you may even be able to secure funding from more than one source.

University scholarships and bursaries

The first place to look for postgraduate funding is the university you want to study at. Universities offer various scholarships and bursaries to serve a range of purposes. These include:

• Academic excellence scholarships  - funding for students in recognition of their outstanding academic credentials. These tend to be limited in number, so you'll face a lot of competition to secure the cash.
• Disadvantaged bursaries  - given to encourage students from all backgrounds to pursue further study, regardless of their personal circumstances.
• Alumni discounts  - many UK universities offer a tuition fee discount of 10%-15% to their own students who progress to postgraduate study.
• Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)  - students looking to find PhD funding and acquire hands-on teaching experience can complete a GTA with their university. Alongside researching and writing your thesis, you'll receive fee waivers in return for providing pastoral support and teaching duties to undergraduate students.
• PhD studentships - these highly competitive Doctoral scholarships can guarantee a place on an often pre-determined research project. For more information, see PhD studentships . You can also explore Research Council funding .

The majority of university scholarships and bursaries need to be secured before the beginning of term. However, if you face financial, health or family difficulties you can usually apply to your institution for hardship funding at any time throughout the academic year.

International postgraduate scholarships

Many students have aspirations to study abroad , but find that it's just too expensive. To make this dream a reality, there are non-profit organisations that specialise in cultural exchanges and provide scholarships to students.

For example, the Fulbright Commission runs a foreign student programme in partnership with US universities for UK Masters or Doctoral degree students looking to study in the USA . A number of Fulbright postgraduate scholarships are available each year for a study period of up to 12 months.

Alternatively, if you're an international student hoping to study in the UK , the British Council lists a range of resources to help you in your search for a Masters scholarship.

Scholarships for professional training

If you're plotting your pathway to a specific career, it's always worth investigating whether you're eligible for financial support from learned society and professional bodies.

To encourage graduates to teach certain subjects, such as chemistry, computer science, maths or physics, professional bodies including the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) provide their own teaching scholarships in partnership with the Department for Education (DfE). Those looking to study nursing will find scholarships and bursaries are available from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) .

If you hold an accredited undergraduate engineering degree and are aiming to achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) offers a number of Masters scholarships each year.

Funding from charities and trusts

In addition to the above sources of funding, various charities, foundations and trusts also provide financial support for postgraduate study and PhD-level research.

• Many philanthropists leave  trust funding  in their name for postgraduate students. The  Sir Richard Stapley Education Trust  offers annual grants of between £550 and £1,250, to UK residents studying any subject at postgraduate level. The  Leverhulme Trust  is another all-subjects trust fund that distributes around £100million per year to postgraduate students. It seeks to 'fund outstanding scholarship, while maintaining a distinctive role within the research funding landscape'.
• Around ten annual  industrial fellowships , each providing up to £80,000 of funding, are awarded by the  Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851  to graduates with the potential to make an outstanding contribution to industry through Doctoral research. This programme is also open to those currently in employment, with projects in any science or engineering discipline considered. Other fellowships and scholarships are available from the educational trust.
• Medical and health research  is a popular field supported by charities. The  Wellcome Trust  offers a range of fellowships, bursaries and scholarships in areas such as biomedical science, population health and product development and applied research. These are available from affiliated charities such as Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and the Medical Research Council.

Annual publications such as The Grants Register and The Directory of Grant Making Trusts provide comprehensive guides on what funding is available.

You can also use online directories such as  FundsOnline  and  Charity Choice  to find the right organisation and funding opportunities to suit your needs, while you can also visit GOV.UK - Search the charity register .

Applications for charity funding are typically made directly to the organisation. You may be asked to submit a personal statement or written references from your tutor, and if you're called for interview (either online or in person), you'll be required to give a presentation giving a brief overview of what your research will involve.

It's important to be proactive with charity funding. Some organisations have very early cut-off points for submitting applications, while others will grant funding on a first-come, first-served basis.

Government bursaries

The UK government provides non-repayable funding for postgraduate study in several different forms. These include:

• Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs) - in addition to any other forms of student finance, postgraduates can get an allowance to cover additional costs due to a mental health problem, long-term illness or any other disability.
• Get Into Teaching - Bursaries - for trainees entitled to support from their country's student finance provider and who are enrolled on a teacher training course that leads to the award of qualified teacher status (QTS).
• NHS Learning Support Fund (LSF) - nursing bursaries are available for pre-registration students looking to study midwifery or another allied health profession at postgraduate level. This is delivered through training grants, parental support and specialist subject payments, as well as regional incentives, help towards travel and accommodation costs and an exceptional hardship fund.
• Social Work Bursaries - a limited number of income-assessed bursaries are supplied by the NHS Business Services Authority to cover study and living costs from the first year of study onwards.

If you aren't eligible for a scholarship or bursary, the government also provides loans for postgraduate study that are similar to the undergraduate student loan. You have to repay these when you're earning above an income threshold. Find out more about:

How to apply for a scholarshi

The earlier you apply for scholarships, the more likely you are to be awarded one of them. Most universities stipulate that you'll need an offer to study with them before you can apply for a scholarship, so do your research and make sure you're prepared to get the ball rolling as soon as possible.

As well as submitting a standard application form, which you'll find on your university's website, you'll also be asked to provide a personal statement. In this statement you'll need to include some or all of the following information:

• a brief outline of your research project
• your future career ambitions
• your current employment situation and, if you're employed, a brief overview of where you work and your responsibilities in the role
• how you're planning to fund your studies
• the extent of your financial need.

Before you submit your funding application, be sure to check that it's grammatically correct and you haven't made any obvious errors. The scholarship application process is highly competitive, so a polished application is vital to being considered for funding.
