Our creative writing minor is designed to contribute to your liberal arts and professional education by fostering creative thinking and effective writing.

You’ll learn to read literature effectively and to write challenging and carefully considered works of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and screenplay.

We immerse you in the creative process of seeing and re-seeing a work of art by cultivating the ability and the desire to research, observe, imagine, reflect, think creatively, write and then rewrite until your work reaches its full potential.

What You Will Learn

Creative thinking and critical analysis

  • The importance of research
  • The importance of close observation and deep curiosity
  • How to write in a variety of genres
  • How to collaborate and work as a team
  • How to respond to works-in-progress through the workshop method
  • How to revise based on feedback from students and faculty
  • How to prepare a portfolio of revised and polished work

Minor Requirements

Total credits: 18

Coursework includes:

  • ENG 206 Reading Literature
  • ENG 285 Introduction to Creative Writing
  • 12 credits of electives in creative writing courses/workshops, with at least three credits from courses numbered 405 and above
