Us visitor visa extension guide.

  • December 9, 2023

US visitor visas are designed for overseas nationals to visit the United States for a period of up to 6 months.

If you find you need to stay in the US for longer than 6 months, you will need to understand the rules on visitor visa extensions to avoid being out of lawful status. Not all visitors can extend their stay beyond 6 months, and you may need to consider alternative immigration options. Remaining in the US beyond your authorized period of stay is illegal and can impact your ability to return to the US in the future.

In this guide we look at options for US visitor visa holders to prolong their time and lawful status in the US; we explain the rules on extending a US visitor visa, or if this is not possible, how to apply to adjust status to another nonimmigrant category from a visitor visa. We also look at the process to apply for a US visitor visa extension or how to adjust nonimmigrant status where the relevant requirements are met.

How long are US visitor visas valid for?

A visitor visa is a nonimmigrant (temporary) visa to travel to the United States for the purposes of unpaid business activities ( B-1 visa ) or for the purposes of tourism ( B-2 visa ), or a combination of both, for a period of up to 6 months.

On the initial grant of a US visitor visa from an overseas Embassy or Consulate, this will allow the successful visa-holder to board a carrier to travel to the United States. On arrival at a US port-of-entry, typically an airport, the visitor can then request permission to enter.

A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States, where US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials have the authority to permit or deny admission. However, if the visa-holder is permitted to enter the country, a CBP official will provide that individual with an admission stamp or a Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record), typically stamped with the amount of time required for the express purpose(s) of the visit.

Can you extend a US visitor visa?

In some cases, it may be possible to request to extend your period of stay as a visitor beyond the date indicated on the stamp or Form I-94 for a maximum period of up to one year. In order to do this, you must make an application before your period of stay expires.

Can you extend a visit if you traveled under ESTA?

The B visitor visa is required by overseas visitors who are not eligible to visit the United States by obtaining an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). An ESTA will allow eligible visitors to travel to the US visa-free for a period of up to 90 days for the purposes of either business or pleasure. The visitor visa is therefore also for those individuals who are looking to stay for longer than 3 months.

Importantly, anyone who entered the United States using an ESTA obtained under the VWP will not be eligible to apply to extend their stay beyond the maximum period of 90 days. You would need to leave the US before your ESTA permission expires and make an application under a relevant category for permission to remain in the US for longer.

Can you extend a visitor visa while in the US?

A US visitor visa-holder will either be required to leave the US on expiry of their permission to be in the country or to apply for an extension of stay before this runs out.

It is possible to apply for a US visitor visa extension while still in the United States, but this must be done prior to expiry of the visa-holder’s authorized period of stay and only where all of the relevant requirements for a visa extension can be met, including where:

  • the applicant was lawfully admitted into the United States with a nonimmigrant visa
  • their nonimmigrant visa status remains valid
  • they have not committed any crimes that make them ineligible for a visa
  • they have not violated the conditions of their admission, and
  • their passport is valid and will remain so for the entire duration of the requested extension of stay in the United States.

The visitor should check the date on the admission stamp or the lower right hand corner of their Form I-94 to establish the date that their authorised stay expires. The admission stamp shows the length of time a person can legally remain in the United States, while the visa itself will only show when and how many times a person may seek admission to the United States from abroad based on the classification of that visa. It is recommended by USCIS that an application to extend B nonimmigrant status is submitted at least 45 days before an individual’s authorised stay in the US expires. This should allow for ample processing time and help to minimise any risk of unlawful presence in the United States.

If an extension of stay is not sought, or approved, any failure to depart the United States on time will result in being out of lawful nonimmigrant status. If a visitor remains in the US longer than authorised, they may be deported. Under US law, visas of individuals who are out of status are also automatically voided, which means that any multiple-entry visa that was voided will not be valid for future entries. Additionally, a failure to depart the US on time may result in the visa-holder being ineligible for a visa in the future, including but not limited to a visitor visa, where they may be effectively barred from returning to the US.

How to apply for a visitor visa extension

To apply for a US visitor visa extension, the visa-holder must submit an online or paper application to US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) using Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status) before their authorised stay expires.

When filing for an extension with USCIS, in addition to Form I-539, the applicant must also submit a written statement or cover letter in support, explaining in detail the following:

  • the reason(s) for their extension request
  • the reasons why their extended stay would be temporary, including what arrangements they have made to depart from the United States, and
  • any effect the extended stay may have on foreign employment or residency.

An extension of stay is not automatic. As a visitor visa is a nonimmigrant visa, designed only for temporary stays in the US, the visa-holder must be able to show USCIS that they have a genuine reason permissible under the visitor rules to want to stay longer in the United States. They must also be able to show that they intend to depart the US at the end of their stay and have binding ties overseas to ensure their return home.

What documents are needed for a US visitor visa extension?

To file for a US visitor visa extension, in addition to Form I-539 and a written statement or cover letter in support, the following documents will typically be needed:

  • any original Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record)
  • a photocopy of the applicant’s passport with the CBP admission stamp
  • supporting documents demonstrating the temporary nature of the extended stay
  • copies of return flight tickets or proof of other arrangements made to leave the US
  • documents showing the impact of the extended stay on employment or residency overseas, such as proof that the applicant still has a job and a home to return to
  • proof of financial independence and the ability to cover the cost of the extended stay.

How long does it take to extend a US visitor visa?

Once an application for a US visitor visa extension has been submitted to USCIS, the applicant will be provided with a receipt notice containing a 13-digit case number. This number can be used to check the status of the application and its processing time. The current processing times for different types of applications can also be searched at ‘Check Case Processing Times’ on the USCIS website. This provides a useful online tool which requires the user to enter the form type (Form I-539), plus the form category (extension of stay for B nonimmigrant) and the location of filing for an estimate of timescales.

Importantly, even if a timely application is made for an extension of stay, but USCIS does not make a decision before the applicant’s authorised stay expires, that person’s lawful nonimmigrant status will still end and they will be classed as out of status. It is also worth noting that if an application for extension of status is pending, USCIS will generally defer any removal proceedings until after a decision is made, although this is not guaranteed.

If the application for an extension of stay is approved, the approval will relate back to the date the Form I-94 expired, and the applicant’s status while their application was pending will then be considered to have been lawful. However, if the application is denied, they may be required to depart the United States immediately. In addition, any nonimmigrant visa in their passport granted in connection with their B classification will become void. Once a visa is void, a new visa application must then be submitted at a US Embassy overseas.

How much does a US visitor visa extension cost?

To apply for an extension of stay in either B-1 or B-2 nonimmigrant status using Form I-539 will cost $370. However, as of the beginning of October 2023, USCIS has exempted any additional biometric services fee, where applicable, for all Form I-539 applicants.

Will a US visitor visa extension require a further interview?

USCIS may require the applicant of a US visitor visa extension to appear for an interview to verify their identity, and to obtain additional information or documentation, although an extension may be granted without an interview. Much will depend on the reasons given for the extension of stay and the circumstances involved, and whether USCIS consider it necessary to ask the applicant questions in person. The applicant may also be asked to provide their biometric information, including a scan of their fingerprints and a photo.

Can a US visitor visa be used to visit the US several times?

A visitor visa will usually be granted as a multiple-entry visa, allowing the successful visa-holder to visit the United States a number of times during the validity of this visa for up to 6 months on each occasion. However, for anyone looking to stay in the US for a period of longer than 6 months, they will need to apply for a US visitor visa extension.

For those using a visitor visa to come to United States on more than one occasion, there should be a reasonable amount of time between each visit, although there is no set requirement for how long a visitor must wait. This means, for example, that someone can travel to the USA for 6 months every year on a visitor visa, provided they can satisfy border officials that they intend to depart at the end of each stay, maintaining significant ties to their country of residence. If officials become suspicious that a visitor visa is being used to live in the US through frequent or extended visits, they are likely to refuse a person entry.

Can an application be made to switch to a different visa?

If a person’s plans change while in the US, for example, where the visa-holder receives an offer of employment or would like to enrol on a course of study, they may be able to request a change to their nonimmigrant status to switch to another visa category. However, advice from an immigration specialist should be sought to explore all available options.

Importantly, a US visitor visa will not allow the holder to undertake paid or productive labour, including employment or self-employment, where they would need to apply for a suitable work visa if they plan to engage in any activities prohibited under the visitor rules. Equally, even though the visa-holder can engage in a short course of recreational study in B nonimmigrant status, where the primary purpose of their visit is business or tourism, they would need to apply for a suitable student visa if they plan to pursue any other studies.

If eligible, an application to change status must be made to USCIS, again using Form I-539, although requests to change status to certain employment-based classifications must instead be filed using Form I-129 (Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker). Applications to adjust status in the US can be complex, requiring numerous documents in support, where the help of a specialised attorney to navigate any potential pitfalls is strongly advised.

US Visitors Visa Extension Application Documents

You should submit the following documents for filing for a visitor visa extension.

  • Form I-539  (Extension of stay/change of status).  You may include your spouse and your unmarried children (under the age of 21 years) in your application for the same extension, as long as all of you are under the same status, or they are all in derivative status. Fill out all the required fields and sign the application.
  • Fee for filing the extension of the visitor visa. Even if the spouse or children are also included in the same form, the total fee is to be paid just once, and there is no extra charge for additional applicants. There is no bio-metric fee. Fee Details
  • Online printed  Form I-94 .
  • Copies of all pages of your  passport(s)  (including blank ones), which are valid for your entire requested period of stay in the U.S.
  • Proof of financial support (see the  Visitor Visa  section for this)
  • The reasons for your extension request (you could give reasons like: yet to see the other coast of the U.S., etc.)
  • Why your extended stay would be temporary, including what arrangements you have made to depart from the U.S.
  • Any effect the extended stay may have on your foreign employment or residency. E.g., you may want to explain how you can be excused from your employment for such an extended period of time. If you are the principal wage earner for your family, visiting the United States alone, and have left your family (spouse, children) behind in your home country, you need to show really good reasons, prove why you need to stay in the U.S. much longer, and how your family will be taken care of properly in your home country. A very long separation from your immediate family is not considered good the in eyes of the USCIS. You should also show that your job or business in your home country would not be in jeopardy from staying away for a long time. If you are employed, you can show a letter from your employer that they are aware of you staying in the U.S. for a longer time. Sample Letter
  • A copy of your return  air tickets  (this would be helpful to show that the stay is temporary).  Make sure that they are really the electronic tickets that including the ticket numbers. Do not simply send an itinerary.

It is important to provide all the required documents with your initial filing. Failure to do so may result in your case being denied or delayed. Since there are no appeal rights for it, it is important for you to fill out the application completely and provide the required information.

B1 B2 Visa Extension, Reasons, Sample Letter & Processing Time

Updated: Apr 23

B1/B2 Visitor Visa Extension Reasons: The B1/B2 visitor visa typically allows you to stay in the US for up to six months, or sometimes less . However, there may be situations when you need to extend your B1/B2 visitor visa to stay beyond 6 or even 12 months.

How to Extend a B1/B2 Visa in the USA

Key Considerations for a Successful Extension

In this post, I will explain the process of extending your B1/B2 visitor visa, including the number of times you can extend it, common reasons for extension, the possibility of extending a visitor visa beyond 6 months, the average processing time for extensions, and key considerations for a successful extension.

Renew B1/B2 Visa

If you are seeking a B1/B2 visa extension after 10 years or want to renew your B1/B2 visa, the process is almost similar to applying for a new B1/B2 visa, which you can refer to below.

Related: How to apply for a B1/B2 visa?

The first question that might arise in your mind is how many times a B2 visa can be extended after 6 months of authorized stay, or if it's even possible to do so. The answer is there is no specific limit on how many times you can extend your B1/B2 visa.

However, it is essential to note that each extension request is evaluated individually, and you must provide a valid reason for needing an extension.

Irrespective of the fact of how many times you request an extension, personally, I have not seen any B2 visa going beyond the stay of 12 months. That being said it's not impossible to extend beyond 12 months but you would need a solid reason for that.

Related: B2 visa maximum length of stay

Typical reasons for extending a B1/B2 visitor visa include medical treatment, attending family events or functions, continuing tourism, coping with natural disasters like COVID-19, etc.

Medical treatment: If you require ongoing medical treatment that cannot be completed within the initially approved stay then you can request for B2 visa extension. You would need a letter from the doctor as a supporting document for form I-539 to make your case stronger. Don't worry about form I-539, it is used for requesting a B2 visa extension which I will explain shortly.

Family events: If there are important family events or celebrations, such as weddings or graduations, that require your presence, you can also request a B2 visa extension. Sharing the date and venue of the event will strengthen your case, and having an invitation card as proof is even better.

Tourism: If you were unable to explore all the intended attractions due to unforeseen circumstances, you can request a B2 visa extension. In the case of requesting an extension for your parents' B2 visa, you can mention their limited physical mobility, which resulted in a longer stay than initially anticipated. Supporting documents, such as your travel itinerary, bookings, and return air tickets, would help your request.

Unexpected events: If you experience unexpected delays or disruptions in your travel plans, such as a natural disaster or flight cancellations, you can request a B2 visa extension. This applied to situations like COVID.

Extending a B2 visa beyond 12 months can be challenging. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) generally expects visitors to adhere to the initially approved duration of stay, which is typically up to six months.

Extending beyond a year requires exceptionally compelling circumstances and strong supporting documentation. If you have a serious health condition and can provide sufficient evidence, you may consider applying for a visitor visa extension.

The processing time for a B1/B2 visa extension can take 3 to 9 months, depending on where it's processed. Most of the B1/B2 extension I-539 cases are approved within:

California Service Center: 9 months

Nebraska Service Center: 9 months

Potomac Service Center: 6 months

Texas Service Center: 5 months

Vermont Service Center: 5 months

You can check current USCIS processing times here . As long as you have filed the extension before your permitted stay expires you don't need to worry about extension processing time. If your extension application is denied you will get sufficient time to leave the country.

Submit your application: Mail the completed Form I-539, supporting documents, and fee to the appropriate USCIS Service Center. You can find the addresses here .

Successful Visitor Visa Extension

To increase the likelihood of a successful B1/B2 visa extension, consider the following:

Valid reasons: Clearly articulate your valid reasons for needing an extension, providing detailed information about your circumstances and how the extension aligns with the purpose of your visit.

Supporting documentation: Include all required supporting documents, such as medical bills or records, wedding invitations, business contracts, any bookings, or event tickets, to support your extension request.

Timely submission: Submit your extension application well in advance (minimum 45 days) of your authorized stay expiration date to allow sufficient processing time.

Legal advice: Consider seeking legal advice from an immigration attorney or consulting the official USCIS website for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding B1/B2 visa extensions.

Extending your B1/B2 visa beyond the initially approved duration is possible under specific circumstances, provided you have valid reasons and can provide supporting documentation. Remember to submit your application well in advance, as processing times can be lengthy.

By following the guidelines outlined in this blog post, you can navigate the B1/B2 visa extension process more confidently and increase your chances of securing an extended stay in the United States for tourism, business, medical treatment, family events, or other valid reasons.

Note: For the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding B1/B2 visa extensions, always refer to the official USCIS website or consult with an immigration attorney.

I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status

File Online

ALERT: On Jan. 31, 2024, we published a  final rule in the Federal Register that adjusts the fees required for most immigration applications and petitions. The new fees will be effective April 1, 2024.

Applications and petitions postmarked on or after April 1, 2024, must include the new fees or we will not accept them.

What to Know About Sending Us Your Form

The new filing fee is effective for filings postmarked April 1, 2024, and later. If you are filing an acceptable prior form edition on or after April 1, 2024, you must include the new filing fee.

ALERT: Beginning Oct. 1, 2023, we are exempting the $85 biometric services fee for Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status. You do not need to pay the biometric services fee if your application is postmarked Oct. 1, 2023, or later.

If you mistakenly submit the biometric services fee and your payment is submitted separately from the Form I-539 fee, we will return the biometric services fee and accept the Form I-539. If you mistakenly submit the biometric services fee and the payment is combined with a paper-based Form I-539 filing fee, we consider this an incorrect filing and we will reject the Form I-539. If you mistakenly authorize a credit card payment that combines the biometric services fee with the application fee, we will accept the application, and only charge the application fee.

For more information, please see our web alert.

ALERT: As of April 1, 2022, we will no longer accept a single, combined fee payment when filing Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status; Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization; or Form I-824, Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petition, together with a Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker.

As of April 1, 2022, we will no longer accept a single, combined fee payment when filing Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status; Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization; or Form I-824, Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petition, together with a Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker.

Separate payments are required for each of these forms. If the payments for these forms are combined, we will reject the entire package.

We are transitioning to electronically processing immigration benefit requests. As we complete this transition, we will be using multiple systems to receive and process various types of immigration benefit requests. Because the Form I-129 and related applications are not all processed in the same system, we require a separate payment instrument for each of these forms.

We acknowledge that using multiple checks or payments for the Form I-129 and related applications is more burdensome than using one payment. We are always analyzing our forms, practices, and policies to streamline filing and reduce, minimize, and control burdens to submit requests. However, we believe that the advantages of electronic processing to both the agency and to the public outweigh the minor inconvenience of submitting individual fee payments.

ALERT: USCIS published a policy manual update that affects language relating to F-1 students on Page 4 of the Form I-539 instructions. Effective July 20, 2021, this update replaces the policy as stated in the form instructions. USCIS is in the process of revising form instructions to reflect the changes made by this policy update. Any revisions to the form instructions will be made in accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act.

Please bring your application support center (ASC) appointment notice (Form I-797C) to your scheduled biometrics appointment.

If you filed multiple I-539 applications and received multiple ASC appointment notices, please bring all notices to your first scheduled appointment at the specified ASC.

If you do not bring all of your ASC appointment notices to your first biometrics appointment, we may not be able to associate you with all of your pending ASC appointment notices for your filed I-539 applications and you must attend all subsequent ASC biometrics appointments or risk possible denial of your other Form I-539 applications due to abandonment. See 8 CFR 103.2 (b)(13)(ii).

Nonimmigrant visas are issued to foreign nationals who intend to remain in the United States for a temporary (less than permanent) period. The period varies for different nonimmigrant categories. We understand that plans can change. If your original reason for coming to the United States changes, you may be eligible to extend your status or you may be required to change your nonimmigrant status to a different one before you lawfully begin to engage in the activities you want to pursue.

You may apply to extend or change your status in the United States if you:

  • Were lawfully admitted into the United States as a nonimmigrant;
  • You have not committed any act that would make you ineligible to receive an immigration benefit;
  • There is no other factor that requires you to depart the United States prior to making a reentry based on a different classification (for example, a USCIS officer may determine that you should obtain a new visa prior to being readmitted into the United States); and
  • You submit your Form I-539 application for an extension or change of status by mail or you can file online before the expiration date as shown on the admission stamp in your travel document on your Form I-94, Arrival-Departure Record. (There are certain very limited circumstances under which USCIS will excuse a late submission.)

Please note that some nonimmigrant visa categories are not eligible to extend or change status (C, D, K-1, K-2, S, TWOV, WT, and WB) and some can only change or extend status subject to certain restrictions (J-1 and M-1). For further guidance, please refer to the filing instructions for Form I-539.

If you are eligible to file an I-539 application, you must apply for extension of stay or change of status before your current authorized stay expires. Even if you are approved for another status in the future, you will be required to file a Form I-539 to “bridge” any gap that might arise between the expiration of your current status and validity of your future status. Therefore, we suggest you file at least 45 days before your stay expires or as soon as you determine your need to change or extend status. Failure to file before the expiration date may be excused if you demonstrate when you file the application that:

  • The delay was due to extraordinary circumstances beyond your control;
  • The length of the delay was reasonable;
  • You have not otherwise violated your status;
  • You are still a bona fide nonimmigrant; and
  • You are not in removal proceedings.

Your passport must be valid for your entire requested period of stay in the new nonimmigrant classification in the United States.

If your status expired before you filed Form I-539 with USCIS to change or extend your status, or if you have otherwise violated the terms of your status (such as by working without authorization), then you are “out of status.” If you fall out of status, we cannot change your status except in certain limited circumstances beyond your control. Staying longer than the period for which you were granted admission may also negatively affect your ability to obtain other benefits or to return to the United States later. If you fall out of status, we recommend that you leave the United States to limit the possible impact on your ability to come back to the United States in the future.

You can find the filing fee for Form I-539 by visiting our Fee Schedule page.

The fee is effective for filings postmarked April 1, 2024, and later.

You can pay the fee with a money order, personal check, cashier’s check, or  pay by credit card  or debit card using  Form G-1450, Authorization for Credit Card Transactions . If you pay by check, you must make your check payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

When you send a payment, you agree to pay for a government service. Filing fees are final and non-refundable, regardless of any action we take on your application, petition, or request, or if you withdraw your request.   If you pay by credit card or debit card, you cannot later dispute the payment. Use our  Fee Calculator  to help determine your fee.

If you are submitting multiple forms, pay each filing fee separately. We are transitioning to electronically processing immigration benefit requests, which requires us to use multiple systems to process your package. We may reject your entire package if you submit a single, combined payment for multiple forms.

How to write a compelling cover letter for UK visa (that will impress the ECO)

Updated: September 6, 2023

Cover Letter for UK Visa

A cover letter for UK visa is instrumental in persuading the ECO that you meet the visa requirements and have no intention of overstaying your visa. It gives you the opportunity to convince the ECO that you are a genuine visitor and you will promptly return back to your country.

A cover letter is a document to convey additional information that wasn’t asked in the UK visa application. It’s not a mandatory document but by far the most helpful document in increasing your chances of UK visa approval.

Table of Contents

Why do you need a cover letter for uk visa.

The information asked in the UK visa application isn’t enough to convince the ECO that you will return back to your home country after your trip.

Most questions on the UK visa application are close-ended. They don’t give you an opportunity to explain.

A cover letter allows you to explain in your own words and be as descriptive as you can. You can use your own format and even use illustrations if needed.

Is a cover letter mandatory for UK visa?

No. A cover letter is not mandatory for UK visa. It’s not even a document in the documents checklist for UK visa.

When I applied for my UK visa, I did not submit a cover letter. At that time, I didn’t know the importance of a cover letter for UK visa. I didn’t feel the need to explain anything additional, so I didn’t submit one. My visa was still approved.

That’s not the case for everyone. A cover letter will not hurt your chances of approval, it can only help. It gives you an additional opportunity to convince the ECO.

If I apply again for my UK visa, I would definitely submit a cover letter.

What should you write in the cover letter?

A cover letter is not a mandatory document for UK visa. So obviously, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) does not provide any guidelines on what to include in the cover letter.

As you all know, I started this website in 2016. Since then, I have been helping my readers with their visas. I figured that a cover letter was the most helpful for UK visa.

I have been writing cover letters for my readers. Over time, I learned that a cover letter with a certain format worked the best for UK visa.

I would like to impart all my knowledge in this article, so you can write the most compelling cover letter for your UK visa. It will not only impress the ECO but will greatly improve your chances of visa approval.

So without any further delay, let’s get started.

Format of the cover letter

Short Simple and Clear Cover Letter for UK Visa

The goal of the cover letter is to convince the ECO that you are a genuine visitor. You must do this in a simple, short and clear manner. ECOs rarely will have time for anything other than what’s asked.

Write your cover letter in simple words as if it’s meant for a 5th grader. If the language is too complicated to read, ECO will not bother to read it.

Do not use words that people from your country can only understand. ECOs are from the UK and they can only understand the terms that they use in the UK.

Example: It’s common for people in India to say something like “ please do the needful and revert back to me “. Even though it’s still understandable, saying something like “ please let me know if you need anything else from me ” will help the ECO understand better.

Remember, a cover letter is not a mandatory document. ECO is doing you a favor by reading it. So, make it easy for the ECO.

Your cover letter should never be longer than two pages. ECOs rarely have time for things other than what’s asked in the application. If you present them with a booklet, they will toss it in the trash without even looking at it.

Again remember, a cover letter is not mandatory. It should not consume too much of ECO’s time.

To further simplify your cover letter, format it with subheadings, bullets and highlights. This helps the ECO to quickly glance over the letter and read any section that interests them.

Example:   Instead of writing like this –

“ I intend to travel to the UK for tourism from 20 June 2021 to 24 June 2021 and I plan to visit various attractions in London such as Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, London Eye, Madame Tussauds, National Gallery, etc. “

Write like this –

  • I intend to travel to the UK for tourism. My travel dates are from 20 June 2021 to 27 June 2021.
  • 20 June 2021: Arrive at Heathrow International Airport at 3 PM. Check-In and dinner.
  • 21 June 2021: Visit Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London
  • 22 June 2021: Visit Tower Bridge and London Eye
  • 23 June 2021: Visit Madame Tussauds and National Gallery
  • 24 June 2021: Depart from Heathrow International Airport at 10 AM

Sections in the cover letter

Templates for UK visa by Visa Traveler

It’s important to break the cover letter into different sections. This helps the ECO quickly glance through the letter and understand the gist of it. If needed, the ECO can read specific sections. Your cover letter for UK visa must contain the following sections.

Section 1: Your previous UK visa refusals

In the UK visa application, there is a question on previous UK visa refusals. It asks about your previous UK visa refusal and its details. This question asks you to explain why your UK visa was refused but doesn’t ask why it shouldn’t have been refused

There is no other place in the application to address your previous visa refusals either. There is the “additional/extra information” area, but it’s only for text and not suitable for formatting or pictures. Therefore, the cover letter is the most appropriate place for addressing your previous UK visa refusal.

If you are re-applying to challenge your UK visa refusal , include a section in your cover letter specifically for your previous visa refusal. Address your previous visa refusal with evidence, additional information and documentation.

Keep this section as the first section in your cover letter. Having this section at the beginning of the cover letter will help the new ECO get straight to the point. Otherwise, they may overlook and your efforts of re-application may go to waste.

Here is an example.

Previous UK Visa Refusal

My previous application for the UK visitor visa with GWF number GWF12345678 was refused on 16 March 2021.

I would like to address the reason for the refusal with additional information and documentation.

Reason for refusal: The sources of the deposit (£850) were not demonstrated by the documents provided.

Explanation: The deposit in question was made on 05-Dec-2020 for the amount of £850. This amount was the yearly bonus from my employer. Yearly bonuses are deposited in the first week of December every year. Please find the attached documentation to prove that these funds are available to me.

Additional Documentation: (1) Bonus slip, (2) bonus announcement email and (3) letter from my employer with details of bonus, amount and dates.

Section 2: Your travel purpose and itinerary

In this section, mention your purpose of visit and proposed itinerary in the UK. The itinerary must be detailed enough but not too descriptive to confuse the ECO. Format it with bullets and/or a table.

Proposed Travel Itinerary

  • I intend to travel to the UK for tourism for a total of 7 days. My travel dates are from 14 Oct 2021 to 20 Oct 2021.
  • My planned day-by-day itinerary is as follows

Section 3: People traveling with you to the UK

In this section, mention the people that will travel with you to the UK. If you are applying for the visa with your family members, mention their details such as name, passport number and GWF number.

Each individual must submit one UK visa application. Say if a husband, wife and child are traveling to the UK together, each of them must submit a separate UK visa application. There is no easy way to tie these applications together.

There is a question in the application asking for travel companions, but mentioning them again in your cover letter will help tie them all together.

Travel Companions

I will be traveling to the UK with my wife and son. The GWF numbers of my wife’s and son’s UK visa applications are as follows.

Section 4: Your current employment/business or university details

In this section, mention your current employment details. Include details such as the employer’s name, how long you have been working and your current salary.

Employment Details

  • I currently work for Samcore Logistics, LTD, Dubai as a product manager.
  • I have been working as a product manager at Samcore Logistics, LTD since Nov 2014.
  • My monthly salary is 7,000 AED after taxes.
  • An original letter from my employer, a leave approval letter and bank statements indicating the salary deposits are attached.

If you are a business owner, mention the details of your business such as your business name, your role in the company, yearly revenue, etc.

Business Details

  • I own a construction business in Dubai since 2016. I’m the founder and president of the business.
  • The business has been in positive cash flow since its inception with yearly revenue of 300,000 AED.
  • A copy of my business registration, business license, bank statements and tax returns are attached.

If you are currently a student at the university, mention your university details along with the program, major and semester details.

University Details

  • I’m a full-time student enrolled in the undergraduate program at the University of the Philippines.
  • I’m currently in the second semester of my second year with another four semesters remaining to graduate.
  • A letter from my university and the fee payment receipts are attached.

Section 5: Your current financial situation

In this section, mention your source of income, savings and the bank statements for your UK visa .

If you have multiple bank accounts, this section is a good place to talk about it. Explain why you have multiple bank accounts and how they are connected.

Financial Solvency

  • I currently have 300,000 INR (approx. 2,900 GBP) in my bank account.
  • The source of my savings is my salary from my employer, WinTech Corporation.
  • The last 6 months bank statements and payslips are attached.

It’s quite common for many to work in a foreign country and send all their earnings back home for family maintenance or savings. In such cases, you will have to submit bank statements from both countries, but most importantly, mention that clearly in this section.

If you use a broker or third party to send cash back home, errors can occur and transactions may not match. I highly recommend using a money transfer service such as Wise to transfer cash back to your home country.

Section 6: Your sponsorship information

If you are paying for your trip yourself, this section does not apply to you. Have this section in your cover letter only if someone else is paying for your trip.

In this section, mention your sponsor details, your relationship with the sponsor, what expenses they will bear, etc.

Sponsorship Details

  • My brother is sponsoring my trip to the UK.
  • He will bear all my travel expenses while I’m in the UK including accommodation, food and transportation.
  • A letter from my brother, his UK residence permit, employment proofs, bank statements, his apartment lease contract and the document to prove our relationship are attached.

Section 7: Your travel history

In this section, mention your travel history. Travel history is very important and highlighting it will only help with your UK visa. Your travel history can include all your previous travels to the UK and other countries. If you have traveled to a country multiple times, mention that country only once.

Travel History

  • In the last 5 years, I have traveled to 8 countries for both tourism and business.
  • The countries I have traveled to are Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, UAE, Turkey and Denmark.
  • A copy of my visas and entry and exit stamps from all the above countries are attached.

Section 8: Any family members staying back at home

In this section, mention any family members remaining at home during your UK trip. This helps prove your family ties with your country. Family ties indicate that you will return back to your country after your trip.

Do not include this section if it does not apply to you.

Family Remaining at Home

  • I currently live with my wife and two children.
  • My wife and children will remain at home during my trip to the UK.
  • A copy of my wife’s employment proof and children’s school receipts are attached.

Section 9: Your intention to return back

In this section, mention that you will promptly return back after your trip and the reasons for that. Reasons can be employment, business or attending to family needs.

Intention to Return Back

  • I intend to return to Pakistan after the end of my UK trip on 27 Oct 2021 as I have to report back to my employer and continue at my job on 28 Oct 2021.
  • An original leave approval letter from my employer is attached.

Section 10: Any miscellaneous information

If you want to add something that didn’t fall under any specific section above, you can include it here. This could be something about properties you own (economic tie), your rental situation, covid safety precautions, etc.

Miscellaneous

  • I currently live in a rental apartment. A copy of my rental contract is attached.
  • I own farmland with my wife. A copy of my property ownership document is attached.
  • I assure you that I will follow COVID safety precautions throughout my trip.

A cover letter is not a mandatory document for UK visa. But in my experience, it’s the most helpful document. The goal of the cover letter is to convince the ECO that you are a genuine visitor. Your cover letter must be simple, short and clear. Break the cover letter into sections, paragraphs and bullet lists. Use pictures and screenshots if necessary.

That’s it, folks! Now you know how to write a compelling cover letter for UK visa. This will greatly improve the chances of your UK visa approval. If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments below.

A letter allows you to outline the purpose of your application and why you want to live with your spouse in the UK. It can demonstrate your commitment to the relationship and your intention to abide by the immigration rules in the UK.

Family Visa Stats UK ( Reference: Gov.UK )

Highlight the strengths of your application:.

In addition to providing an overview of your relationship and intentions, a letter can also highlight the strengths of your application. This includes outlining your financial situation, employment status, and accommodation plans.

Clarify any issues:

A spouse visa cover letter sample can also be useful for clarifying any issues or potential concerns that the visa officer may have. For example, suppose you have gaps in your employment history or have been previously refused a visa. In that case, a letter can help explain these issues and provide additional information.

Provide context for supporting documents:

When you apply for something, a letter can help explain why you are sending the other papers. You can use something to help make sure the person who gives you a visa knows your story.

Overall, a UK Spouse Visa Cover Letter Sample can play an important role in your application. If you want to get a visa, it is important to give the visa officer all the details they need to make the right decision.

Dos and Don’ts of Writing a Cover Letter

Writing a letter is hard because you have to know the rules. When applying to the UK, you should write a letter to your spouse. Here are some tips to help you write a good letter.

  • Do address the letter to the Entry Clearance Officer (ECO): When you write a letter, make sure you write the name of the person you want to read it so they can look at it.
  • Be concise and clear: Make sure your letter is brief and to the point while still addressing all the necessary information. Use clear and simple language that is easy to understand.
  • Highlight your relationship: Show pictures or letters that prove you and your spouse love each other.
  • Do explain your circumstances: If any particular circumstances affect your application, such as health issues or financial difficulties, explain them clearly in the letter.
  • Proofread your letter: Check it for spelling and grammar mistakes and ensure it is free of errors before submitting it.
  • Don’t include unnecessary information: Keep your letter concise and relevant to your application. Do not include information irrelevant to your application, such as your employment history or travel plans.
  • Don’t use overly emotional language: While it is important to convey your feelings, it can make your letter appear less professional.
  • Don’t make false claims: Be truthful and honest in your letter. Making false claims or exaggerating your circumstances can negatively impact your application.
  • Don’t forget to provide evidence: Provide supporting evidence for any claims you make in your letter, such as photographs or correspondence.
  • Don’t forget to sign and date the letter: Make sure to sign and date your letter before submitting it, as this shows that you have read and understood its contents.

Following these dos and don’ts can help you write an effective spousal visa extension letter for your UK application. Writing a good letter can help you get what you want!

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing a Spouse Visa Letter

Writing a letter for a spouse application is hard and if you don’t do it right, it could stop your application from being accepted. Here are some common mistakes you should avoid when writing your spouse letter:

Not Including Your Contact Information:

You need to write your name, phone number, email, and home address in the letter. This will enable the UKVI to contact you in case of any further queries or issues.

Not Addressing the Letter to the Correct Person:

Always address your letter to the correct person or department. Don’t use ‘To Whom It May Concern’ when you’re applying for something. It looks like you’re not taking it seriously.

Including Irrelevant Information:

When writing a letter, you should only write about yourself, your partner, and how you two are connected. When writing something, only include important information about yourself and don’t add things that are not related.

Using Generic Language:

When writing a letter to your spouse, make it special and different. Don’t use words that everyone else is using. Make sure you use your own words and convey your relationship’s authenticity.

Being Overly Emotional:

When you write a letter to someone you love, tell them how you feel but don’t get too emotional. You should maintain a professional tone while explaining your relationship.

Submitting the Wrong Document:

Check twice to make sure you gave the right papers for your partner’s application. You need to put a letter, copies of your passport, and other papers with your application.

Great! The best guidance on a spouse visa cover letter for UK applications. One additional suggestion I would make is to consider, it could benefit from addressing the importance of addressing potential red flags or concerns upfront in the cover letter and providing proactive explanations or mitigating factors. This proactive approach can enhance transparency and credibility in the application process. Collaborating with Passport Legacy could provide applicants with additional expertise and guidance, enhancing their chances of a successful visa application.

*THIS IS WHAT I WROTE FOR MY LETTER OF EXPLANATION FOR MY EXTENSION. PLEASE GIVE ME INPUT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'VE SUBMITTED A SUCCESSFUL EXTENSION BEFORE. THANKS!!* Application to Change Conditions: Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Visitor: Letter of Explanation: My full name here This is an additional document, explaining my particular situation in applying to extend my stay as a visitor in Canada. I would like to extend my stay so to complete my application for Permanent Residence, as well as to stay with my husband during the process of waiting for PR. My husband and I plan on submitting an application for permanent residence through the Family Class- Spousal. We have already paid the $1040 for the Sponsor fee, Principal applicant fee, and RPRF. The receipt is attached below as an image. This shows we are serious about submitting the Permanent Residence application. I am requesting roughly 12 months of an extension to allow enough time for the wait times that are shown via the VO office I will submit my permanent resident application to. I understand that as a visitor I am not allowed to work or go to school. I will only be visiting with my husband and that is all. If my extension as a visitor is denied, or if permanent residence is not granted, I would leave so as to comply with CIC’s wishes. Thank you for your consideration of my application to extend my stay as a visitor. My full name ********Note about Supporting Documents Pertaining to Proof of means of Financial Support: I planned to submit my husband’s bank statements for the last 4 months and downloaded them from his bank’s website in PDF form. Unfortunately I cannot merge the 4 into one document as they are password protected for safety by the bank. I have submitted my husband’s pay stubs instead and screen captured my husband’s most recent bank statement from both his checking and savings. *after this is our receipt for PR and marriage certificate*

A Perfect Cover Letter for Student Visa Application (with Sample)

A Perfect Cover Letter for Student Visa Application (with Sample)

“How to write a perfect cover letter for a student visa application?”

For international students who plan on applying for a Canadian Study Permit , creating an effective cover letter can improve your chances of success.

If you don’t carefully structure and format your cover, it will push IRCC in another direction, which could cause you to lose your application altogether. This is why applicants must follow a specific structure for every aspect of their cover letters.

Many international students ask us for the perfect cover letter for their Canadian study permit application. Letters can be complicated, so make sure you follow these guidelines.

Components of Cover Letter for Student Visa Canada

  • Purpose : The cover letter aims to enhance the chances of success in obtaining a Canadian Study Permit.
  • Structure : The cover letter should be formatted correctly to avoid potential application issues.
  • Components : The cover letter consists of three essential parts: Opening, Body, and Expense/Funds Summary.
  • Types of Cover Letters : SOP (Statement of Purpose) for first-time applicants and LOE (Letter of Explanation) for applicants reapplying after a previous denial.
  • Opening : State the purpose of the letter, include personal and authority/embassy details, and address the letter to the Visa Officer.
  • Body : Begin with a formal greeting, introduce yourself, discuss the purpose of studying in Canada, explain your choice of the Canadian College or University, outline your financial plan, emphasize your commitment to returning to your home country, and conclude the letter with a formal closing.
  • Expense/Funds Summary : Outline expenses, state the amount paid and the funds available in your bank account and include a list of documents attached to the application.
  • Overall Impact : A well-structured and detailed cover letter can positively influence the visa officer’s decision and contribute to a successful Canadian Study Permit application.

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter describes why you want to go to Canada, what you intend to do there, and your post-study plans. It also contains information highlighting your academic and professional achievements.

Two basic types of cover letters are required while applying for a Canadian student visa, i.e. SOP (statement of purpose) and LOE (letter of explanation). Essentially, both of these letters are the same but have different themes.

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) is more for candidates applying for a Canada study visa for the first time.
  • LOE (Letter of Explanation) is for applicants reapplying for a Canada study visa after being denied one in the past).

Components of the Cover Letter for Canadian Student Visa

Student Visa Cover Letter Sample

Here is a sample cover letter for Canada student visa application.

Applying for Study Permit in Canada June 1, 2022.

Akash Kumar Flat No. 100, Triveni Apartments Pitam Pura, NEW DELHI, 110034 INDIA

High Commission of Canada to India, in New Delhi Visa Section 7/8 Shantipath Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110 021, India

Attn.: Visa officer Subject: Canadian Study Permit Application

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been accepted into a graduate program at the University of Waterloo in Canada and will apply for a study permit. I have included my original university acceptance letter with this application.

I am a qualified software developer with six years of experience in India’s IT industry. I have held this position for the last two years at a sizable IT company in New Delhi.

Thanks to the computer science degree I obtained from Delhi Technological University in 2016, I was able to secure a very profitable job. During my studies, I learned how to design and write codes that are used in a variety of software programs worldwide. India’s software development industry is growing rapidly, and as a result, many companies are looking for developers who specialize in specific programming languages. Therefore, I am eager to expand my knowledge and skills by enrolling in an international graduate program.

I chose a graduate program focusing on Programming Languages at the University of Waterloo because it is among the best educational institutions globally for this study area. Many of the program’s professors have contributed to innovative developments in the software programming field. The Waterloo-Kitchener area is also renowned for producing many talented individuals in the computer science field, leading to the region being referred to as Canada’s Silicon Valley. By contrast, my educational prospects in India are pretty limited. New Delhi is a major city with many reputable educational institutions. However, none offer the graduate program I am pursuing. I also believe being immersed in a North American setting will allow me to learn to adapt my skills to multinational companies once I return to India.

I have paid the University of Waterloo CAD 14,000  to cover my fees for my first semester. You can verify this transaction in the attached bank draft with my application.

I have also found accommodation in a dormitory on the university campus. The dormitory’s address is as follows:

Suite #303, Village 1, University of Waterloo 200 University Ave W Waterloo, ON, N2J 4B6, Canada

I have paid my accommodation fees for the first semester. You can contact the University administrator in charge of the dormitory at the following phone number: +1 519-888-4567 ext. 84086

Funds Available

I have INR 8,100,000 or CAD 50,000 in my Indian bank account. You can verify this amount in the bank statement I have supplied with the application package. You can also verify that I have steadily built up these savings from the monthly salary deposits I received from my job at Linus Technologies in New Delhi.

I intend to return to India after completing my graduate program at the University of Waterloo. Both my elderly parents (picture attached) reside in New Delhi, and I plan to take care of them after returning. I also plan to take over managing their rental property in the city. My older brother (picture attached) will be performing this duty while I complete my studies in Canada.

I would greatly appreciate your support in issuing a study permit before August 1, 2022, so I may depart for Canada by August 15, 2022, for my program’s orientation. I have included all the relevant information requested in the original application package. Please contact me at +91 1234-567890 or [email protected] if you need me to submit additional information or documents for my application.

Yours Sincerely,

____[SIGNATURE LINE]____ Akash Kumar

Two months before the Olympics are scheduled to begin in Paris, the global agency tasked with policing doping in sports is facing a growing crisis as it fends off allegations it helped cover up the positive tests of elite Chinese swimmers who went on to compete — and win medals — at the last Summer Games.

The allegations are particularly vexing for the World Anti-Doping Agency, which has long billed itself as the gold standard in the worldwide movement for clean sports, because they raise the specter that the agency — and by extension the entire system set up to try to keep the Olympics clean — cannot be trusted.

Athletes are openly questioning whether WADA can be relied upon to do its core job of ensuring there will be a level playing field in Paris, where some of the same Chinese swimmers are favorites to win more medals.

And in recent days, pressure on WADA has increased significantly, particularly from the United States, which is one of the agency’s chief funders, and as new questions have emerged about WADA’s appointment of an independent prosecutor to investigate the allegations, and whether WADA has provided an accurate account to the public about the appointment, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The New York Times.

On Wednesday, the Biden administration’s top drug official — who is also a member of WADA’s executive committee — sent a stinging letter to the antidoping agency laying out how it needs to appoint a truly independent commission to investigate how the positive tests were handled and demanding that its executive board hold an emergency meeting within the next 10 days.

“Let me underscore the extreme concern I have been hearing directly from American athletes and their representatives on this issue,” the official, Dr. Rahul Gupta, wrote in the letter, which was sent on Biden administration letterhead. “As I have shared with you, the athletes have expressed they are heading into the Olympic and Paralympic Games with serious concerns about whether the playing field is level and the competition fair.”

That same day, the senator in charge of the subcommittee that provides funding to WADA, Chris Van Hollen, Democrat of Maryland, said, “We need answers before we support future funding.” (The United States contributes more to WADA’s budget — pledging more than $3.6 million this year — than any nation.)

Then on Friday, a congressional aide said that a bipartisan House committee investigating the Chinese Communist Party had begun looking into the positive tests.

Lilly King, a two-time Olympic gold-medalist and a member of U.S.A. Swimming’s Athletes’ Advisory Council, said that she no longer trusts that WADA is doing its job to keep athletes who violate antidoping rules out of the Games.

“I am not confident when I get up on the blocks that the people to my right and my left are clean,” Ms. King said in a telephone interview on Friday. “And that’s really unfortunate, because that’s not something I should have to focus on while racing at the Olympics.”

The mounting pressure and growing concerns about the credibility of Olympic competitions have been met with silence from the two groups that account for a major portion of the International Olympic Committee’s revenue: its chief broadcaster and sponsors.

NBC, whose broadcast rights payments comprise a significant portion of the I.O.C.’s total budget, did not respond to a question about whether it was confident it would be broadcasting an Olympics in which viewers could trust that the athletes they were watching would be clean.

The multimillion-dollar Olympic sponsors — Visa, Airbnb, Coca-Cola and Intel — did not respond to messages seeking comment on whether they were concerned about linking their brands with a Games in which athletes have expressed concerns about cheating. Allianz, a German financial services company, also declined to comment.

The Times reported last month that WADA failed to follow its own rules after 23 elite Chinese swimmers all tested positive for the same banned drug in 2021, months before the last Summer Olympics. The drug — trimetazidine, known as TMZ — is a prescription heart medication, but it is popular among athletes looking for an advantage because it helps them train harder, recover faster and quickly moves through the body, making it more difficult to detect.

Two days after the Times article was published, WADA’s president, Witold Banka, and other top officials from the agency held a news conference during which they said they had no choice but to accept the explanation provided by China’s antidoping agency for the positive tests. The Chinese agency claimed that all of the swimmers had inadvertently ingested the drug because they ate food from a kitchen contaminated by TMZ.

In the days that followed, WADA published a lengthy document that again tried to explain its decision.

But neither move satisfied athletes, sports officials and antidoping officials perplexed by WADA’s apparent unwillingness to pursue its own investigation of the positive tests. Within days of the news becoming public, however, WADA appointed a special prosecutor, Eric Cottier, to review its handling of the case.

That decision, too, quickly drew criticism.

Mr. Cottier is a former attorney general of Vaud, a Swiss region that has become the center of international sports, and that is home to several sports organizations, including the I.O.C. But interviews showed that Mr. Cottier had been nominated to lead the investigation by the official who was in charge of auditing the agency’s intelligence and investigations department at the time the Chinese swimmers tested positive.

The auditor, Jacques Antenen, served as Vaud’s police chief under Mr. Cottier when he was Vaud’s attorney general. In a telephone interview on May 3, Mr. Antenen said he had contacted Olivier Niggli, WADA’s most senior administrator, in the days after the disclosure of the positive tests to suggest that Mr. Cottier might be a good choice to lead the investigation.

“I didn’t recommend him; I just said if you need someone, it’s a good choice,” Mr. Antenen said. He said he did not know if others had been considered for the role.

Regardless of Mr. Cottier’s abilities and qualifications, his physical proximity to figures close to WADA, the I.O.C. and the sports movement are problematic, governance experts said.

Mr. Cottier and Christoph de Kepper, the I.O.C.’s director general, were among the people who celebrated Mr. Antenen’s retirement from the police force at a party in 2022. The I.O.C. contributes half of WADA’s annual $40 million budget.

The celebration, which was featured in the police service’s in-house magazine, was first reported by The Associated Press. A caption with a picture of two of the men in the magazine reads, “Attorney General Eric Cottier came to greet his old friend Jacques Antenen.”

A WADA spokesman, James Fitzgerald, said his agency had, in fact, contacted Mr. Antenen first, to ask “if he knew of someone with the requisite credentials, independence and availability to carry out a thorough review of WADA’s handling on this case.”

“These attempts to slur the integrity of a highly regarded professional just as he begins his work are getting more and more ridiculous and are designed to undermine the process,” Mr. Fitzgerald said.

There are also new questions about WADA’s public statements related to the appointment of Mr. Cottier. In a statement to The Times, WADA said it had discussed Mr. Cottier’s appointment with its board before formally appointing him to the role.

But Dr. Gupta’s Office of National Drug Control Policy said in a statement that shortly before the formal announcement of Mr. Cottier’s hiring in April, WADA told its board an investigator had already been chosen.

Dr. Gupta said in his letter to WADA that he was “deeply concerned” that the executive committee “was not adequately briefed with essential information throughout this process.”

Current and former athletes are now asking for more testing worldwide heading into the Paris Games, but they acknowledged that their concerns about the global antidoping regulator are unlikely to be allayed in time for the opening ceremony.

Ms. King, the American swimmer, said that when she learned of the undisclosed positive tests, she felt as if this were a replay of her experience from the 2016 Rio Olympics , when she won a gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke over a Russian swimmer, Yulia Efimova, who had failed a drug test earlier that year but was allowed to compete after the result was overturned on appeal.

Katie Meili, an athlete representative on U.S.A. Swimming’s board of directors and the bronze medalist in that race behind Ms. King and Ms. Efimova, said athletes had “put a ton of faith in WADA.”

“Yes, the positive tests are a concern, and that’s a bad thing,” she said. “But even more concerning to me is that the international regulator is not doing their job.”
