“You Can Win” A Step Towards Success | Book Review

You can win by shiv khera | book rview.

“You can win” is a great book by author Shiv Khera an Indian writer. Here we will give review of the book. It is recommended to read the book review before you buy the book. Posted by: Blurbgeek

In simple words success is:

“Accomplishment of aims and desired vision OR getting some social status , gained fame or becoming PROSPEROUS”

Some people thought that success is the other name of destination they thought what you dreamed if u achieve you became successful but this is the definition of success only for those who want to became a moneybag

According to my ideology ” success is a journey not a destination. It is the journey of your determination. it is the journey of your will power. It is the journey of your self-belief , in short success is the journey of your dream until it realize into reality.

The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire more precisely burning desire. Success doesn’t mean the absence of failure in fact failure gives you an opportunity to learn, it works as a flame for your burning desire  as Shiv khera rightly quoted,

” Success is 90% failure” Shiv Khera | Writer of “You Can Win”

You can win Shiv Khera Book Review - Blurbgeek

Right Attitude of Success | ” You Can Win Book”

The book ” you can win” by Shiv khera gives you a right attitude towards success ,this book changed my life I learned the real meaning of success from it, it gives you a guidance towards your goal in other words It provides you a first step towards dream/ goal. The most impressive thing in this book is that it cover all the ingredients of success. The key words of book ” You can Win” are:

  • Importance of attitude
  • Self-esteem
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Subconscious mind and habits
  • Goal setting
  • Values and vision

All those not only the key words of the book but also an outlook on the life of successful personalities all over the world. Read the complete book review to understand all of them. If you go through the life of the successful personalities like,

  • Michael Angelo
  • Richard Branson
  • Andrew Carnegie

You will find all these ingredients in the recipe of their success. As khera said,

” Winners do not do  different things ; they do things differently” Shiv Khera | Writer of “You Can Win”

This quote is the central point of the book it means that success doesn’t mean to apply new strategies or do something new in-fact it matters the way we do, it matters how we real  with things. Choose a strategy but apply it in a different way in your own purely your own way. Do not copy others.

It is just like, Introducing a new dish within the same time and with truly the same ingredients providing to all the competitors in a competition. To be a winner, first you should accept your self that what you are, with what you have and where you are. You must have full confidence on your abilities, you must thirst for learning, you must have curiosity to discover things you must have boarder vision on life.

A Story Worth Mentioning

I would like to share my favorite story in the book review of ” you can win”, * you must have thirst for learning*

An eagle’s egg was placed in the nest of prairie chicken. The egg hatched and a little eagle grew up thinking it was a prairie chicken. The eagle did what the prairie chicken did. It scratched in the dirt of seeds.it clucked and cackled. It never flew more then a few feet because that it what the prairie chicken did. One day he saw an eagle flying gracefully and majestically in the open sky. He asked the prairie chicken  ” what is that beautiful bird”??

The chicken replied,

” That is an eagle. He is an outstanding bird, but you can’t fly like him because you are just a prairie chicken”  so the eagle never gave it a second thought, believing that to be true. He lived the life of and died a prairie chicken depriving himself of his heritage just because of lack of vision.

What a waste!! He was born to win but was conditioned to lose. The same thing is true for most people the unfortunate part of life Oliver Wandall Holmes said,

” most people go to their graves, with music still in them” . Oliver Wandall Holmes

Key Rules of Success | ”You Can Win Book”

We didn’t achieve excellent because we have lack of vision. If you want to be successful we must experience the failure to enjoy the gravy of success you have to bear the warmth of failure. It you want to fly gracefully like an eagle you have to learn the ways of eagle. The Writer mentioned some action steps to be a winner those are,

  • Be a good finder
  • Make a habit of Doing it now
  • Develop an attitude of gratitude
  • Get into a continuous education program
  • Build positive self-esteem
  • Stay away from negative influence
  • Learn to like the things that need to be done
  • Start your day with positive

These key rules are simple enough to change our attitude towards our routine. To become a winner is not a difficult thing the all you have to be done is to create a positive attitude in your life.. we have to start learn from the nature duck keep paddling restlessly underneath but  appears smooth and calm on top.. this is the secret of success. Keep on working calmly unless you succeed,

I would like to share Another story from the book in review that will make you realize many opportunities are lost just because of indecision,

Once someone asked a farmer if he had planted wheat for the season?? The farmer replied “No, I was afraid it wouldn’t rain”. Then the man asked  ” Did you planted corn”??The farmer replied ” I was afraid of insects eating one corn”. Then the man asked ” what did you plant”?? The farmer said ,” nothing, I played it safe”.

Moral is that, we lost many opportunities because of our foolishness. We have to take opportunity, we have to take the risk if we want to succeed , we have to plough or saw the seed of we want to enjoy the delicious fruit.  The road of success is always under construction of your determination.

Some Quotes From ”You Can Win Book”

Some motivational quotes from the book “You can win” that will shake your consciousness are,

“An uneducated thief may steal good things from the train, but an educated one may steal the entire train. We need to compete for knowledge and wisdom not for grades”

”Motivation is like fire, unless you Keep adding fuel to it, it dies. Your fuel is your belief in your inner values”

“Success doesn’t mean  an absence of problem, it is overcoming problems”

” success is not measured how high we go up in life, but how many times we bounce back when we fall down”

” The greatest gift the human have is the ability to think”

People choose to ignore the spirit and derive the meaning that is convenient to them Such people have tied this phrase to selfishness and I am sure that was not intent. The always forgot that we don’t live in isolation what you do effects me and what I do effects you we are connected. We have to realize we are sharing this planet we must learn to behave responsibly. There are two kinds of people in this world taker and givers takers eat well givers sleep well. Givers have high esteem and positive attitude they serve society.

SOME WORDS ABOUT THE BOOK

This book “you can win” step by step tool for achievers was originally published in 1998.

This book is a basic step towards your success it is full to wisdom , life stories of successful personalities, example, experiences and it helps to dispel your confusion and clarify your attitude towards success. It creates a link between failure and success and gives you a compression between winners and losers.

You will be surprised to know that Losers in academic life became the most successful persons in their professional life. By just in believing on their will power and determination. I would again say that,

” Winner do not do different things, they do things differently”

SOME WORDS ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shiv khera is an Indian author and a motivational speaker he is also an educator, business consultant and a successful entrepreneur. He is an author of 14 books but his international bestseller book is ” you can win,”

“You Can Win” has sold 3.5 million copies in 21 different languages. In the Book, a saying of Winston Churchill is quoted:

Success is not final ; failure is not fetal,it is the courage to continue that counts Winston Churchill

It explains the supreme quality of a winner success isn’t always greatness,it is about consistency. Any fact we are facing is not as important as our attitude towards it, for that determines our success or failure.

CENTRAL IDEA

The main idea of the book is that,

A winner is someone who accept  a win or a loss with the same temperment. For him/ her it doesn’t matter he / she win or loss the thing that matter is what they learn from it or what behavior and strategy they adopt. A winner is Never alone in Winning a game, its rather the people who stand by her or make him a winner, its his devotion who make him winner.

Winner are those who came forward and embrace the failure in manly manner. It meany strategy and  planning makes a man winner or champion everyone works hard but winners work strategically they prefer smart work they overcome their weaknesses they are compassionate and believe in “Do or Do not there is not to try”

''YOU CAN WIN'' Book By Shiv Khera | Book Review

Review of “You Can Win” book ends

I would like to complete this Review of Book ”You Can Win” with the words of Success,

“Behind every successful person there’s a lot of unsuccessful year, so every success is an admission ticket to a set of new decisions”.

You Can Win by Shiv Khera: Book Review and Summary

What is this book about?

“You Can Win” is a self-help book by Shiv Khera . It helps achieve success in personal and professional life by providing practical advice and motivational stories. It develops readers’ mindset and skills to achieve their goals.

Who should read this book?

“You Can Win” has practical advice, anecdotes, and inspiring stories. It benefits people from various walks of life, including students, entrepreneurs, and working professionals. It helps increase productivity, leadership, and communication skills, and develops a positive attitude and self-confidence.

Top quotes from the book :

  • Winners see the gain; losers see the pain
  • Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently
  • Looking for the positive does not necessarily mean overlooking faults. being a positive thinker does not mean one has to agree or accept everything. It only means that a person is solution-focused
  • Ability will get you success; character will keep you successful
  • A person’s character is judged not only by the company they keep but also by the company they avoid

You may find this helpful: 7 ways to Build a Positive attitude

Take-home messages: Summary

  • According to the author, a person’s attitude is a factor that can contribute to their success. Harvard University conducted a study that suggests 85% of people are employed due to their attitude, while only 15% are employed based on their intelligence or cleverness.
  • If people fail to recognize an opportunity, they often complain of noise when it comes knocking. Furthermore, the author suggests that an opportunity never presents itself in the same way twice. While the next opportunity may be superior or inferior to the previous one, it will never be identical.
  • Our attitude is primarily influenced by three key factors, which are our environment, experiences, and education. The environment includes our homes, our school, and our society. Our attitude also becomes positive if we have a positive experience with people. The author discusses both formal and informal education in the context of gaining wisdom and achieving success, emphasizing that education encompasses more than just academic qualifications or degrees.
  • When you procrastinate, your energy depletes at a faster rate than usual, and it is essential to take action without wasting time. Doing so can result in a sense of accomplishment and increased energy. However, people with negative attitudes tend to struggle with this, often succumbing to procrastination and subsequently experiencing regret.
  • Persistence represents a strong will and obstinacy represents a strong won’t. Most people fail not because they lack knowledge, but because they quit halfway.
  • People who risk nothing, do nothing and have nothing. Take risks but don’t gamble. While risk-takers move ahead with their eyes open, gamblers shoot in the dark.
  • Self-esteem is essential to succeed in life. It’s a belief in oneself and abilities. The book shows that low self-esteem hinders growth, while high self-esteem boosts confidence, motivation, and success.

You may find this helpful: How to Avoid Procrastination?

There is a lot more you can learn from this book and I recommend that you read it at least once.

Overall, “You Can Win” is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to improve their personal or professional life. While it may not offer a comprehensive solution to all of life’s challenges, the book provides a solid foundation of principles and strategies for achieving success. I will rate this book 9/10.

You Can Win Summary (PDF)

In this summary, I will give you all the lessons I’ve learned from ‘You Can Win’ by Shiv Khera.

Without further ado, let’s dive right in.

Key Lesson #1: Build Your Attitude Right

build your attitude right banner

“Attitude” is one of those words that keeps popping up repeatedly.

Yes, it’s that important. Most successful people get their attitude right before they become successful.

Your attitude is determined by how you think and behave.

It will help if you keep the right attitude while facing any circumstance.

Often the people you surround yourself with affect your attitude.

That’s why you should protect your mind from harmful influences.

The author suggests that you spend time with total quality people (TQP) who have goals and ambitions.

This way, you’ll learn valuable things like good character and values from them.

Also, it’d add substance to your character.

In Attitude Is Everything, Jeff Keller discussed a similar thing.

He explained how one could alter his life by changing his attitude.

Your attitude serves as a foundation. And by having a solid foundation, you make sure that other things fall in the right place.

Can a building with a weak foundation survive turbulence from an earthquake?

The same is with us.

How come a person with the wrong attitude could survive the problems in life?

Attitude also affects your outlook on life.

For instance, when subjected to the same problem, two people might react differently depending on how they see the problem.

This is how attitude determines the level of success a person would achieve in his life.

Suggested Reading: Attitude Is Everything Summary

Key Lesson #2: Understand The Factors That Affect Your Attitude

Various factors affect your attitude, but the main factors are:

  • Environment.

The environment  could be taken care of by surrounding yourself with TQP. (Discussed already.)

Experience  is gained over time. By building a community with TQP, you’ll enrich your experience.

Education  also determines your attitude to a large extent. For example, if you read many self-help books, your worldview would differ from an average person’s.

Building the right attitude is like building the proper foundation of a house. So make sure that you aren’t messing this up.

Insight : There are plenty of  book summaries and articles on this website (like the one you’re reading). Read them all to enrich yourself with valuable insights, which will further help you set the right attitude.

Key Lesson #3: Don’t Fake It

don't fake it

Heard the advice, “Fake it till you make it.”?

This is one of the worst pieces of advice ever. Why? Because you can’t fake anything for a long time. You can’t pretend every time by putting on a fake personality.

The only way to improve your personality is to add substance to it.

For instance, if you wish to have a charming personality, then work for it.

You won’t become charming by faking. Do exercise, read books, do exciting things, work with amazing people…

Knowing this would help you in developing and maintaining the right mindset.

You can’t build a proper attitude by thinking only, and worst — pretending.

Key Lesson #4: Choose a positive attitude over the negative one

Positive Or Negative: Which Type Of Attitude Is The Best?

You always have a choice. So it’s up to you what attitude you choose.

According to the author, you should stick with a positive attitude.

A positive attitude helps you stay more productive, reduces stress, encourages you to be a problem solver, and improves the quality of your life.

And conversely, a negative attitude do you more harm than good and often leads you to resentment.

Key Lesson #5: Embrace The Change

embrace the change banner

Why do you think most people stick to a negative attitude despite knowing that it’s harmful to them?

That’s because their natural tendency is to resist change.

No one wants to change. Because ‘change’ often requires you to leave your comfort zone and do things you’ve never done before.

As discussed already, not adapting to the change causes more problems.

So embrace the change. Set your attitude right. Solve your problems for good. F*ck the negative attitude.

At least develop a desire to change your attitude and make it right.

Stop blaming others for your problems!

The choice is yours, whether you want to keep blaming the world or change your life for good with the right attitude and action.

Key Lesson #6: Have The “Do It Now” Attitude

do it now banner

These three words, if followed, could change your whole life.

Most people live with the “Do it later” attitude rather than the “Do it now” attitude.

Procrastination is a significant problem these days.

The author says that your energy drains faster than usual when you procrastinate. You should do things without wasting your time. That way, you’ll feel more energized with a sense of achievement.

But people with negative attitudes barely get above the point. They keep procrastinating. And as a result, they regret it later.

Just do it. Don’t procrastinate and delay your success!

Key Lesson #7: “Utilize Your Present To The Fullest”

There is no point in blaming. (I hope you got the last point.)

The thing is: For better or worse, you are here now on this planet to survive.

You’ve got to do your best at any moment or utilize your time to its fullest. This is what people with a positive attitude do.

They live in the present moment and do what they can do in the best possible way.

Living in the present doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve to ignore the past and future altogether. That’s not even possible, considering the big memory bank you have in your head.

The idea is to use your time in the best possible way. And to do that, you’ll have to plan, of course. Often people fail to get this idea right.

Note : You’ll need to stop procrastinating to apply this learning.

Key Lesson #8: Education Is More Than You Think

If you’re reading this summary, you probably know what real education is.

There is a lot of fuss about academic qualifications and degrees when people talk about education.

Especially, things like character building and teachings related to morals and ethics are entirely ignored or underestimated compared to technical knowledge.

Is the education system following the right approach? Why are there walking failures in our society who don’t understand moral values and lack humanity?

That’s because education today focuses on filling the information in our brains.

Most so-called educated people are like living encyclopedias who can’t even handle their sh*t. (Sorry for the slang!)

Here is what the author says about education:

“True education is training of both the head and the heart.” Shiv Khera

Only by working on both head and heart do you become educated for real.

Real education comes through real-life experiences. An educated person is competent enough to use his skills in the right circumstances.

Even if you’re a post-graduate on a topic, it doesn’t matter unless you know how to put that knowledge to use.

Remember that:

“Knowledge is only potential power.” Unknown

How do you know if you’re educated?

I bet the author isn’t entirely against acquiring academic qualifications.

The point is:

Instead of deluding yourself by reading a few books and calling it a day, ask critical questions to yourself. Here are a few questions you could try:

  • Am I able to apply the things I’ve learned?
  • Do I understand the concept properly?
  • What value did I get from my academic course?
  • Am I able to understand the human side of the studied concept?

My advice : Don’t limit yourself to books. Look what’s happening in the real world. Learn how to put your knowledge to use. And make this world a better place.

Key Lesson #9: Never Underestimate The Power Of Common Sense

education is nothing without common sense

Education is nothing without common sense.

Often people believe that common sense is an ordinary thing. But the author says that common sense in abundance is actually wisdom.

You don’t need fancy degrees or qualifications to call yourself wise. Wisdom comes automatically when common sense is applied and accumulated in life.

Common sense gives you the ability to think and differentiate between good and evil. So use it every time you make a decision.

In fact, not using this extreme power would lead you to failure. You’ll regret not using common sense when you needed to.

Many people lose their credentials, become victims to hackers, and lose their money.

If only those people start using common sense and avoid downloading malicious files to their laptops or PCs, they will prevent such tragedies.

What’s more, academic education doesn’t teach you to use common sense.

Takeaway : Avoid being ignorant. Learn to apply common sense in every aspect of your life.

You Can Win Book Review

I read this book on my mobile. Well, this is a long one. It isn’t for those who struggle to understand lengthy books.

What kind of book is ‘You Can Win’?

This book felt similar to Robin Sharma’s Who Will Cry When You Die as it gives a holistic view of various concepts like vision, values, education, environment, and much more.

I already knew many things that are taught in this book. That’s because I read this kind of stuff all the time.

But if you’re a beginner and don’t even have the slightest clue about various aspects of life, you should read this book.

By Jess Sharp , Money team

Money saving trends are constantly popping up on social media - but one in particular has been gaining huge amounts of attention.

Created accidentally by a comedian, loud budgeting is breaking down the taboo of speaking about money.

The idea is based on being firmer/more vocal about your financial boundaries in social situations and setting out what you are happy to spend your money on, instead of "Keeping up with the Joneses".

On TikTok alone, videos published under the hashtag #loudbudgeting have garnered more than 30 million views - and that figure is continuing to climb.

We spoke to Lukas Battle - the 26-year-old who unintentionally created the trend as part of a comedy sketch.

Based in New York, he came up with the term in a skit about the "quiet luxury" hype, which had spread online in 2023 inspired by shows like Succession.

The term was used for humble bragging about your wealth with expensive items that were subtle in their design - for example, Gwyneth Paltrow's  £3,900 moss green wool coat from The Row, which she wore during her ski resort trial...

"I was never a big fan of the quiet luxury trend, so I just kind of switched the words and wrote 'loud budgeting is in'. I'm tired of spending money and I don't want to pretend to be rich," Lukas said.

"That's how it started and then the TikTok comments were just obsessed with that original idea."

This was the first time he mentioned it...

Lukas explained that it wasn't about "being poor" but about not being afraid of sharing your financial limits and "what's profitable for you personally".

"It's not 'skip a coffee a day and you'll become a millionaire'."

While talking money has been seen as rude or taboo, he said it's something his generation is more comfortable doing.

"I've seen more debate around the topic and I think people are really intrigued and attracted by the idea," he said.

"It's just focusing your spending and time on things you enjoy and cutting out the things you might feel pressured to spend your money on."

He has incorporated loud budgeting into his own life, telling his friends "it's free to go outside" and opting for cheaper dinner alternatives.

"Having the terminology and knowing it's a trend helps people understand it and there's no awkward conversation around it," he said.

The trend has been a big hit with so-called American "finfluencers", or "financial influencers", but people in the UK have started practising it as well.

Mia Westrap has taken up loud budgeting by embarking on a no-buy year and sharing her finances with her 11.3k TikTok followers.

Earning roughly £2,100 a month, she spends around £1,200 on essentials, like rent, petrol and car insurance, but limits what else she can purchase.

Clothes, fizzy drinks, beauty treatments, makeup, dinners out and train tickets are just some things on her "red list".

The 26-year-old PHD student first came across the idea back in 2017, but decided to take up the challenge this year after realising she was living "pay check to pay check".

She said her "biggest fear" in the beginning was that her friends wouldn't understand what she was doing, but she found loud budgeting helped.

"I'm still trying my best to just go along with what everyone wants to do but I just won't spend money while we do it and my friends don't mind that, we don't make a big deal out of it," she said.

So far, she has been able to save £1,700, and she said talking openly about her money has been "really helpful".

"There's no way I could have got this far if I wasn't baring my soul to the internet about the money I have spent. It has been a really motivating factor."

Financial expert John Webb said loud budgeting has the ability to help many "feel empowered" and create a "more realistic" relationship with money.

"This is helping to normalise having open and honest conversations about finances," the consumer affair manager at Experien said.

"It can also reduce the anxiety some might have by keeping their financial worries to themselves."

However, he warned it's important to be cautious and to take the reality of life into consideration.

"It could cause troubles within friendship groups if they're not on the same page as you or have different financial goals," he said.

"This challenge isn't meant to stop you from having fun, but it is designed to help people become more conscious and intentional when it comes to money, and reduce the stigma around talking about it."

Rightmove's keyword tool shows Victorian-era houses are the most commonly searched period properties, with people drawn to their ornate designs and features.

Georgian and Edwardian-style are second and third respectively, followed by Tudor properties. Regency ranked in fifth place.

Rightmove property expert Tim Bannister said: "Home hunters continue to be captivated by the character and charm of properties that we see in period dramas.

"Victorian homes remain particularly popular, characterised by their historic charm, solid construction, and spacious interiors. You'll often find Victorian houses in some of the most desirable locations which include convenient access to schools and transport links."

Throughout the week Money blog readers have shared their thoughts on the stories we've been covering, with the most correspondence coming in on...

  • A hotly contested debate on the best brand of tea
  • Downsizing homes
  • The cost of Michelin-starred food

Job interview mistakes

On Wednesday we reported on a new £12m ad from PG Tips in response to it falling behind rivals such as Twinings, Yorkshire Tea and Tetley....

We had lots of comments like this...

How on earth was the PG Tips advert so expensive? I prefer Tetley tea, PG Tips is never strong enough flavour for me. Shellyleppard
The reason for the sales drop with PG Tips could be because they increased the price and reduced the quantity of bags from 240 to 180 - it's obvious. Royston

And then this question which we've tried to answer below...

Why have PG Tips changed from Pyramid shape tea bags, to a square? Sam

Last year PG Tips said it was changing to a square bag that left more room for leaves to infuse, as the bags wouldn't fold over themselves.

We reported on data showing how downsizing could save you money for retirement - more than £400,000, in some regions, by swapping four beds for two.

Some of our readers shared their experiences...

We are downsizing and moving South so it's costing us £100k extra for a smaller place, all money from retirement fund. AlanNorth
Interesting read about downsizing for retirement. We recently did this to have the means to retire early at 52. However, we bought a house in the south of France for the price of a flat in our town in West Sussex. Now living the dream! OliSarah

How much should we pay for food?

Executive chef at London's two-Michelin-starred Ikoyi, Jeremy Chan, raised eyebrows when he suggested to the Money blog that Britons don't pay enough for restaurant food.

Ikoyi, the 35th best restaurant in the world, charges £320 for its tasting menu.

"I don't think people pay enough money for food, I think we charge too little, [but] we want to always be accessible to as many people as possible, we're always trying our best to do that," he said, in a piece about his restaurant's tie up with Uber Eats...

We had this in...

Are they serious? That is two weeks' worth of food shopping for me, if the rich can afford this "tasting menu" then they need to be taxed even more by the government, it's just crazy! Steve T
If the rate of pay is proportionate to the vastly overpriced costs of the double Michelin star menu, I would gladly peel quail eggs for four-hour stints over continuing to be abused as a UK supply teacher. AndrewWard
Does this two-star Michelin star chef live in the real world? Who gives a toss if he stands and peels his quails eggs for four hours, and he can get the best turbot from the fishmonger fresh on a daily basis? It doesn't justify the outrageous price he is charging for his tasting menu. Topaztraveller
Chefs do make me laugh, a steak is just a steak, they don't make the meat! They just cook it like the rest of us, but we eat out because we can't be bothered cooking! StevieGrah

Finally, many of you reacted to this feature on common mistakes in job interviews...

Those 10 biggest mistakes people make in interviews is the dumbest thing I've ever read. They expect all that and they'll be offering a £25k a year job. Why wouldn't I want to know about benefits and basic sick pay? And also a limp handshake? How's that relevant to how you work? Jre90

Others brought their own tips...

Whenever I go for an interview I stick to three points: 1. Be yourself 2. Own the interview 3. Wear the clothes that match the job you are applying Kevin James Blakey

From Sunday, eligible working parents of children from nine-months-old in England will be able to register for access to up to 15 free hours of government-funded childcare per week.

This will then be granted from September.

Check if you're eligible  here  - or read on for our explainer on free childcare across the UK.

Three and four year olds

In England, all parents of children aged three and four in England can claim 15 hours of free childcare per week, for 1,140 hours (38 weeks) a year, at an approved provider.

This is a universal offer open to all.

It can be extended to 30 hours where both parents (or the sole parent) are in work, earn the weekly minimum equivalent of 16 hours at the national minimum or living wage, and have an income of less than £100,000 per year.

Two year olds

Previously, only parents in receipt of certain benefits were eligible for 15 hours of free childcare.

But, as of last month, this was extended to working parents.

This is not a universal offer, however.

A working parent must earn more than £8,670 but less than £100,000 per year. For couples, the rule applies to both parents.

Nine months old

In September, this same 15-hour offer will be extended to working parents of children aged from nine months. From 12 May, those whose children will be at least nine months old on 31 August can apply to received the 15 hours of care from September.

From September 2025

The final change to the childcare offer in England will be rolled out in September 2025, when eligible working parents of all children under the age of five will be able to claim 30 hours of free childcare a week.

In some areas of Wales, the Flying Start early years programme offers 12.5 hours of free childcare for 39 weeks, for eligible children aged two to three. The scheme is based on your postcode area, though it is currently being expanded.

All three and four-year-olds are entitled to free early education of 10 hours per week in approved settings during term time under the Welsh government's childcare offer.

Some children of this age are entitled to up to 30 hours per week of free early education and childcare over 48 weeks of the year. The hours can be split - but at least 10 need to be used on early education.

To qualify for this, each parent must earn less than £100,000 per year, be employed and earn at least the equivalent of working 16 hours a week at the national minimum wage, or be enrolled on an undergraduate, postgraduate or further education course that is at least 10 weeks in length.

All three and four-year-olds living in Scotland are entitled to at least 1,140 hours per year of free childcare, with no work or earnings requirements for parents.

This is usually taken as 30 hours per week over term time (38 weeks), though each provider will have their own approach.

Some households can claim free childcare for two-year-olds. To be eligible you have to be claiming certain benefits such as Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit, or have a child that is in the care of their local council or living with you under a guardianship order or kinship care order.

Northern Ireland

There is no scheme for free childcare in Northern Ireland. Some other limited support is available.

Working parents can access support from UK-wide schemes such as tax credits, Universal Credit, childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare.

Aside from this, all parents of children aged three or four can apply for at least 12.5 hours a week of funded pre-school education during term time. But over 90% of three-year-olds have a funded pre-school place - and of course this is different to childcare.

What other help could I be eligible for?

Tax-free childcare  - Working parents in the UK can claim up to £500 every three months (up to £2,000 a year) for each of their children to help with childcare costs.

If the child is disabled, the amount goes up to £1,000 every three months (up to £4,000 a year).

To claim the benefit, parents will need to open a tax-free childcare account online. For every 80p paid into the account, the government will top it up by 20p.

The scheme is available until the September after the child turns 11.

Universal credit  - Working families on universal credit can claim back up to 85% of their monthly childcare costs, as long as the care is paid for upfront. The most you can claim per month is £951 for one child or £1,630 for two or more children.

Tax credits -  People claiming working tax credit can get up to 70% of what they pay for childcare if their costs are no more than £175 per week for one child or £300 per work for multiple children.

Two big economic moments dominated the news agenda in Money this week - interest rates and GDP.

As expected, the Bank of England held the base rate at 5.25% on Wednesday - but a shift in language was instructive about what may happen next.

Bank governor Andrew Bailey opened the door to a summer cut to 5%, telling reporters that an easing of rates at the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting on 20 June was neither ruled out nor a fait accompli.

More surprisingly, he suggested that rate cuts, when they start, could go deeper "than currently priced into market rates".

He refused to be drawn on what that path might look like - but markets had thought rates could bottom out at 4.5% or 4.75% this year, and potentially 3.5% or 4% next.

"To make sure that inflation stays around the 2% target - that inflation will neither be too high nor too low - it's likely that we will need to cut Bank rate over the coming quarters and make monetary policy somewhat less restrictive over the forecast period," Mr Bailey said.

You can read economics editor Ed Conway's analysis of the Bank's decision here ...

On Friday we discovered the UK is no longer in recession.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.6% between January and March, the Office for National Statistics said.

This followed two consecutive quarters of the economy shrinking.

The data was more positive than anticipated.

"Britain is not just out of recession," wrote Conway. "It is out of recession with a bang."

The UK has seen its fastest growth since the tailend of the pandemic - and Conway picked out three other reasons for optimism.

1/ An economic growth rate of 0.6% is near enough to what economists used to call "trend growth". It's the kind of number that signifies the economy growing at more or less "normal" rates.

2/ 0.6% means the UK is, alongside Canada, the fastest-growing economy in the G7 (we've yet to hear from Japan, but economists expect its economy to contract in the first quarter).

3/ Third, it's not just gross domestic product that's up. So too is gross domestic product per head - the number you get when you divide our national income by every person in the country. After seven years without any growth, GDP per head rose by 0.4% in the first quarter.

GDP per head is a more accurate yardstick for the "feelgood factor", said Conway - perhaps meaning people will finally start to feel better off.

Loaves of bread have been recalled from shelves in Japan after they were found to contain the remains of a rat.

Production of the bread in Tokyo has been halted after parts of a "small animal" were found by at least two people.

Pasco Shikishima Corp, which produces the bread, said 104,000 packages have been recalled as it apologised and promised compensation.

A company representative told Sky News's US partner network, NBC News, that a "small black rat" was found in the bread. No customers were reported to have fallen ill as a result of ingesting the contaminated bread.

"We deeply apologise for the serious inconvenience and trouble this has caused to our customers, suppliers, and other concerned parties," the spokesman said.

Pasco added in a separate statement that "we will do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls so that this will never happen again. We ask for your understanding and your co-operation."

Japanese media reports said at least two people who bought the bread in the Gunma prefecture, north-west of Tokyo, complained to the company about finding a rodent in the bread.

Record levels of shoplifting appear to be declining as fewer shopkeepers reported thefts last year, new figures show.

A survey by the Office for National Statistics shows 26% of retailers experienced customer theft in 2023, down from a record high of 28% in 2022.

This comes despite a number of reports suggesting shoplifting is becoming more frequent.

A  separate ONS finding , which used police crime data, showed reports of shoplifting were at their highest level in 20 years in 2023, with law enforcements logging 430,000 instances of the crime.

Let's get you up to speed on the biggest business news of the past 24 hours.

A privately owned used-car platform is circling Cazoo Group, its stricken US-listed rival, which is on the brink of administration.

Sky News has learnt that Motors.co.uk is a leading contender to acquire Cazoo's marketplace operation, which would include its brand and intellectual property assets.

The process to auction the used-car platform's constituent parts comes after it spent tens of millions of pounds on sponsorship deals in football, snooker and darts in a rapid attempt to gain market share.

The owner of British Airways has reported a sharp rise in profits amid soaring demand for trips and a fall in the cost of fuel.

International Airlines Group said its operating profit for the first three months of the year was €68m (£58.5m) - above expectations and up from €9m (£7.7m) during the same period in 2023.

The company, which also owns Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, said earnings had soared thanks to strong demand, particularly over the Easter holidays.

The prospect of a strike across Tata Steel's UK operations has gained further traction after a key union secured support for industrial action.

Community, which has more than 3,000 members, said 85% voted in favour of fighting the India-owned company's plans for up to 2,800 job losses, the majority of them at the country's biggest steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales.

Tata confirmed last month it was to press ahead with the closure of the blast furnaces at the plant, replacing them with electric arc furnaces to reduce emissions and costs.

In doing so, the company rejected an alternative plan put forward by the Community, GMB and Unite unions that, they said, would raise productivity and protect jobs across the supply chain.

Everything is Predictable: How Bayes’ Remarkable Theorem Explains the World review: Why life is a poker game

Tom chivers believes elements of maths can explain human behaviour and the workings of nature.

book review on you can win

Thomas Bayes: His theorem is the subject of a book by Tom Chivers

Humans are predication machines. Every second of every day, we are trying to navigate the world based on our predictions. We are making predictions when we book a holiday, based on our prior knowledge and beliefs, that our destination will still exist when we travel there next summer and that an airplane will still exist that is capable of flying us there safely.

We are constantly assessing our prior knowledge and beliefs and testing that against any new data that comes into us via our senses. This neatly describes how our brain works and is also the basis of a remarkable mathematical theorem called Bayes theorem, devised by Thomas Bayes, an obscure 19th-century English Presbyterian minister.

Bayes theorem can, according to the author (a science writer and twice winner of the Royal Statistical Society’s award for statistical excellence in journalism), be used to explain all human behaviour and perception and the workings of the natural world around us.

[  The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain; Ireland 1970-2020; Car Bombs and Barrack Busters  ]

It can even explain depression, the author argues, by identifying the cause as being inappropriately strong prior beliefs about perceived negative aspects of the self – such as “I am a bad person”. When such “priors”, as the author calls them, are strong in an individual, they cannot be shifted no matter how much new evidence comes along to disprove them.

It also explains why, the author argues, some people hold so strongly to the belief that vaccines cause autism. The evidence to the contrary is not enough to shift their prior belief that mainstream medicine is lying to us.

Based on our priors, we believe that an apple falls down from a tree when ripe, not up. Yet, if we saw an apple that fell upwards, we would have to update the likelihood of the next apple falling from a tree – our prior belief would shift to accommodate what we have seen.

[  Knife by Salman Rushdie review: living to tell the tale of being saved by love  ]

The constant updating of data about the world through our senses, and testing it against our belief system, is how our brains work. It is also how artificial intelligence works.

It is possible to predict the future, he says, with greater or lesser confidence depending on how close our priors match up with the new data we are constantly receiving.

Life is a poker game, the author says, where we are all trying to make the best decisions we can based on the limited amount of information we have. This book is about an equation, devised in 1763, which describes – mathematically – how we do that.

A Former ‘Green Book’ Hotel in North Carolina Has Been Lovingly Restored — and You Can Still Stay There

The Historic Magnolia House honors its past as a Green Book hotel while offering thoughtfully appointed rooms and delectable Southern food.

Food and Drink

Experiences and amenities, accessibility.

Byron Cain/Waterfall Associates

The Historic Magnolia House isn't just any ordinary bed-and-breakfast.

This Victorian-Italianate home dates back to 1898, but its vital role in Black history started in 1949 when the Gist family purchased the abode and turned it into a hotel that would welcome Black travelers. One of the few options with quality accommodations between Atlanta and Richmond, Virginia, during segregation, the property would become recognized in six editions of the Green Book starting in 1955.

Now, the Historic Magnolia House is one of America's last fully restored hotels of its kind.

In the decades following the Jim Crow era, the home began to slowly fall to the wayside. Samuel Penn Pass, who grew up in the neighborhood just around the corner, purchased the property in 1995 hoping to return it to its former glory. "However, it was in very bad condition," recalls Pass's daughter, Natalie Pass-Miller. "Squatters and the homeless community had taken over the home," she adds. The house had to be gutted to be stabilized and secured. By the time Pass-Miller and her husband, Devin Miller, acquired the Historic Magnolia House in 2018, there were still some necessary touches that needed to be made before it could be re-opened as a functioning B&B once more.

In January 2022, the Historic Magnolia House finally made its grand return. For Pass-Miller, carrying on her family's legacy was undoubtedly a driving force when it came to taking on this exceptional project, but it's almost much more than that. "Preserving Black historic sites, reuniting them in their communities on a national level, . . . and being able to give back to the [low-income] community that [she] grew up in" were also significant factors. Ultimately, it's this fervor for conservation and local betterment that reverberates through the walls of the Historic Magnolia House.

Historic Magnolia House

  • Events throughout the year honor Black musicians, bring together the community and offer guests the opportunity to interact with locals.
  • The food here is comforting, delicious, and soulful — Southern cooking at its best.
  • The four bold and colorful rooms have been individually designed to pay homage to famous past guests.

The passion is palpable from the moment you step foot into the hotel. The staff's genuine desire to welcome all guests creates this sense of warmth that can only be likened to how one would feel in a fond, familiar place. Color-blocked interiors are reminiscent of a quirky but loving aunt or grandmother's home, a comforting feeling that's only heightened when the smell of butter and spices wafts out from the kitchen. Meanwhile, the museum-like living room is a reminder of the fight for basic civil rights for Black Americans while also honoring the fortitude of the Black community and the hotel's former proprietors. The Historic Magnolia House is not just any B&B — it's a home, it's a national treasure.

Read on for our full review.

book review on you can win

Swathed in striking colors with various textures and midcentury modern accents, the four rooms at the Historic Magnolia House each have their own personality and have been dedicated to the property's past venerable visitors.

The chic black-and-white Baldwin room is a tribute to writers and intellectuals such as James Baldwin and Carter G. Woodson and features a vintage Smith-Corona typewriter on the desk. In Legends, a more “masculine” touch of plaid wallpaper, leather throw pillows, dark wood, and overt adornments like boxing gloves and baseball mitts remember athletes like heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles and baseball icon Jackie Robinson. Contrastingly, Carlotta's hot pink décor honors Queens of Soul Tina Turner, Lena Horne, and Gladys Knight while also nodding to Greensboro's erstwhile Carlotta Club, an important music venue that was part of the Chitlin' Circuit.

Then, there's Kind of Blue, inspired by Miles Davis' album of the same name, which is an homage to the friendship between the musician and Buddy Gist, the son of the hotel's original owners. The largest of the four, the cobalt-hued room is the only option with a private bathroom and shower. In keeping with an authentic Green Book hotel experience, the other three accommodations have access to shared bathrooms like guests would have during the Jim Crow era.

As expected with any B&B, breakfast is included, and this is one worth staying for.

A force to be reckoned with, Brooklyn-born Yancey Williams served as a combat Navy cook and later graduated top of his class from the Institute of Culinary Education. During the pandemic, the chef found his way down to North Carolina, where he ran the kitchen at UNC Greensboro before becoming a one-man crew at the Historic Magnolia House. The menu changes seasonally, but expect Southern classics like fried green tomatoes, chicken and waffles, and buttery grits.

If you stay on a Friday, hop down for supper and order the oxtail. Braised for six hours, the meat is so ridiculously tender that if a strong gust of wind found its way through the dining room, it'd likely fall right off the bone. A small selection of spirits, cocktails, and wine are also available to wash it all down. But one word of advice: portions are generous, so come with a healthy appetite and perhaps some stretchy pants.

Given the legendary musicians who have walked through the doors of the Historic Magnolia House, it is no surprise that music is at the core of the property's programming. "Because there is such a rich history as it relates to the musical arts . . . it was only right to establish a program in honor of such," says Pass-Miller. "Juke Joint [is tailored] toward the Black history and Black excellence in music and the culture of the arts."

Every Friday night, live jazz performed by members of the UNCG band floats through the home. A local DJ headlines a near-monthly party with house music. But watch for marquee events throughout the year, ranging from tribute concerts to art showcases.

Otherwise, relax in the lounge with a tipple and some board games, enjoy friendly conversation with other guests, or get to know the staff, who all have interesting stories. But you can't leave without exploring the museum-like first floor, where you'll find several informational placards centered around the hotel's history, excerpts from the Green Book , and even the original motel sign above the reception desk.

Due to the property's historic nature, the B&B does not offer ADA-compliant accommodations. All four rooms are located on the home's second floor, which is only accessible by stairs.

While you're in Greensboro, take the opportunity to brush up on history. On Feb. 1, 1960, four North Carolina A&T State University students sat down at Woolworth's, a whites-only lunch counter, marking the beginning of non-violent protests known as sit-ins. Today, that landmark is now the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, commemorating the site and participants of the historic moment, along with many other significant events during the Civil Rights Movement.

For American Revolution buffs, the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park was the scene for the historic namesake battle in 1781 that, while it was a loss on paper, ultimately led to pushing the British out of the Carolinas.

If you're interested in the arts, the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts hosts everything from Broadway productions to comedy shows, while downtown Greensboro, just a couple minutes from the Historic Magnolia House, is decorated with murals for public enjoyment.

‘Every Dollar Counts’: Prosecutors Use Quotes From Trump’s Books Against Him

Donald J. Trump’s books provided prosecutors with passages they believe can help their case, as they argue that he knew that his company falsified business records to cover up a hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels.

Prosecutors cannot force Donald J. Trump to testify at his criminal trial in Manhattan, but that does not mean they can’t use his words against him.

On Tuesday, the prosecutors unearthed a series of damaging excerpts from books that the former president wrote, plucking out passages to help make their case against Mr. Trump. In essence, they called a past version of Mr. Trump to testify against his future self.

In his own words, Mr. Trump described how he kept a focus on minute details and watched every penny that left his accounts, corroborating a core component of the prosecution’s case as they argue that he knew that his company falsified business records to cover up a hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star.

On cross-examination, Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, suggested that a ghost writer had been responsible for these words.

Mr. Trump’s written words also described how he sees sexual potential in women that he encounters, a salient point in a trial tethered to encounters with women that he is accused of covering up. “All the women on ‘The Apprentice’ flirted with me,” he wrote.

Prosecutors introduced the damning excerpts by questioning Sally Franklin, a witness who is an executive and editor, to read excerpts from “Trump: How to Get Rich” and “Trump: Think Like a Billionaire,” both of which were published by Ballantine, a Penguin Random House imprint.

The jury heard Trump’s written words: “Every dollar counts in business, and for that matter, every dime.” The text continued, “Even in high end shops, I bargain,” adding, “I hate paying retail.”

This was not the first time jurors heard Trump in his own words. Last week, prosecutors played video clips of him talking, and they have questioned witnesses about Mr. Trump’s infamous statement on the set of “Access Hollywood” that he would grab women by the genitals.

But the judge would not allow prosecutors to play the tape for jurors, a decision that elevated the importance of the book passages, or any other opportunity to use Mr. Trump as a witness against himself.

It might not be the only opportunity for jurors to hear from the former president. Although the prosecution cannot legally call him to testify, Mr. Trump could take the witness stand in his own defense, though it is unclear whether he will do so.

For now, jurors heard his words via Ms. Franklin, who read ominous passages in which Mr. Trump spoke of how he treated his perceived enemies.

“For many years I’ve said that if someone screws you, screw them back,” she read from a book by Mr. Trump. It continued: “When somebody hurts you, just go after them as viciously and as violently as you can. Like it says in the Bible, an eye for an eye.”

As jurors listened, Mr. Trump’s smiling image on a book cover was plastered on screens across the courtroom, a sharp contrast from the scowl he sported throughout the testimony.
