Book Review: "A Wolf Called Wander"

book review a wolf called wander

This was a lovely book that I got at Target in their book section. It came out in 2019, and it’s beautiful.

“A Wolf Called Wander” was inspired by the true story of this one wolf that was monitored by wildlife specialists in Oregon via a radio receiver collar who discovered that he traveled all the way from Oregon to Northern California and hadn’t bothered any of the livestock on the farms he passed on the way there. It’s as simple a story to summarize: a wolf is forced to leave the only home he’s ever known after his pack/family are attacked by an enemy wolf pack and he tries to find a new home where he can establish a family of his own. I do not normally read action/adventure books. Most of the books I’ve read are either mystery, horror, speculative, and historical fiction. I grew up reading a lot of fantasy novels when I was a kid. So stories like “A Wolf Called Wander” haven’t struck my interest much in all the years I’ve been reading stories.

Thanks for reading Reagan’ Richard Rose's Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

And I have been missing out. “A Wolf Called Wander” is beautifully written and entirely from the perspective of the wolf. Things that humans understand about the world are unknown to wild animals, and wolves explore their worlds with a different set of senses. Superior sense of smell, for instance. What was probably most interesting to me was how our main character discovered what a dog was for the first time. I won’t give anything away outside of what I’ve already said, so you’ll just have to read the book to know exactly what I’m talking about. There was only one part of the story where the vagueness of it left me confused. It involved coyotes eating and the wolf considering whether or not it was hungry enough to eat their leftovers or keep his pride. The description of what they were eating was cloudy, for me, but for the rest of the book, it’s a beautifully written book that really takes you with Wander on his adventure.

There are also absolutely gorgeous drawings throughout the book, including the occasional two-page spread. It’s all in black and white, like sketches with charcoal or a really dark pencil. I’d honestly recommend this book for the art all by itself. Between the writing and the illustrations, I fell in awe of the story and the emotional connection it leaves in its wake. You feel for the animals, all of them, but especially our main character.

If you like animals, even if you don’t normally read a lot of books about animals, you should definitely read this book. My review honestly barely does it justice, even though the whole story can be boiled down to “boring” one or two sentences.

I may never find such a short description a deterrent to the narrative ever again. (We’ll see.)

Summary and Study Guide

Written in 2019 by Rosanne Parry, A Wolf Called Wander is a coming-of-age wilderness survival story based on the real-life thousand-mile journey of a young, lone male wolf who was known only by his GPS tracking identifier, OR-7. Sporting highly detailed grayscale illustrations by visual artist Mónica Armiño, as well as a map and appendices featuring information about wolf biology, Parry’s novel is written in the first-person limited perspective and takes on the imagined voice of the young wolf himself as he narrates the story of his birth, his tragic separation from his parents and banishment from his home ground, and his search for a new place and pack to call home.

Please note that Wander uses several idiosyncratic phrases to describe features of his interactions with human beings, and the following defines the most commonly used terms as they appear in the novel:

  • Almost-wolf – livestock guardian dog
  • Black River – a paved road
  • Noisemaker – car
  • Lightning Stick – firearm

This novel, while not graphic in its descriptions of violence, does depict the confirmed, threatened, and implied deaths and significant suffering of several wolves that are killed by fellow wolves and by human beings. The story also depicts the hunting and killing of several animals by wolves for the purposes of consuming meat to ensure survival. Similarly, the aftermath of the death of a deer by vehicle accident is addressed, and a forest fire occurs during which the deaths of many animals likely caught in its path are not depicted but are nonetheless implied.

This guide is based on the HarperCollins 2021 paperback edition of the novel.

Plot Summary

Born to a small pack of northwestern grey wolves, Wander, who is initially known to his family as Swift, begins his narrative when he is still deaf and blind, as all wolf pups are when they are first born. He is one of five pups, including his sisters, Pounce and Wag, and his brothers, Sharp (who is bigger and more aggressive than he is), and Warm (a sweet, docile, and affectionate pup who becomes very attached to Wander). From a very early age, Wander feels the instinct to take on the roles of provider and pack protector, so he shadows his father (simply called Father) every day, observing his hunting practices until the day that Wander and his siblings are able to join the hunt. Wander is discouraged when he is not allowed to play a role in the carefully orchestrated hunt, which would allow him the honor and prestige of killing the elk that are so essential to his family’s survival. However, he does not dream of leaving his pack to start out on his own as many young wolves his age might do.

When Wander is one year old, he is delighted when his mother and father welcome a new litter of young pups, but his happiness proves to be short-lived when a rival band of pale wolves crosses into his family’s territory and challenges Wander’s pack for dominance and control of the region. Although Wander fights valiantly to protect his father and tries to draw the enemy wolves away in hopes of keeping them from finding his mother and his new sibling-pups, his father is killed in the battle, and Wander is forced away from his home territory. He is unable to return under threat of death and is therefore unaware of what became of his parents, his aunt, his caregiver, and his young siblings. He begins to wander throughout the landscape, hoping that some of his family members might have survived the battle against the pale wolves, but as time passes, Wander worries that he may never see his family again.

He experiences a severe setback when he tries to hunt an elk on his own and suffers a broken sternum when his chest is cut open by a powerful hoof. He has no choice but to lie down and try to recuperate while he grows ever hungrier and more desperate. Eventually, he recovers enough to resume his travels. Wander is momentarily overjoyed when his brother Warm joins him but is devastated once again when his brother is executed by ranchers who believe that the young wolf must have caused the death of their calf, who was actually killed by two other rogue wolves. In his despair, Wander is at a loss for what to do when he meets a raven, who, true to their symbiotic relationship with wolves, helps Wander to find smaller game that he can catch on his own and consume in order to survive.

Aware that he may never see his family again, Wander’s primary goals shift to finding a new safe place to call home and joining other wolves with whom he can form a new pack. Along his journey, Wander traverses a diverse selection of different climates throughout Oregon and California and encounters many dangers, most of which are posed by humans. Throughout his many struggles, the tiniest bit of hope follows him around in the form of a mysterious black female wolf who always seems to be just out of reach.

At the climax of the novel, Wander, having traveled hundreds of miles, finds himself in a pristine place untouched by humans and unclaimed by other wolves. There, with his memories of his family and his determination to honor them, he declares himself owner of the landscape. Not long after achieving this triumph, he hears a howl and seeks out the female wolf who is calling to him. Finally, he finds the beautiful black wolf he has dreamed of since his first glimpse of her, and she consents to become his mate, hunting partner, and equal as they form the first wolf pack in western Oregon in over 50 years.

Rosanne Parry

Author of written in stone | second fiddle | heart of a shepherd, a wolf called wander.

A Wolf Called Wander is my first fully illustrated novel. Anderson Press is the British publisher and Greenwillow is the American publisher. The book has art on almost every page! I’m beyond thrilled with the stunning work of Mónica Armiño , a brilliant illustrator and animator from Madrid. The audiobook voice actor is Kirby Heybourne who also voiced the audio for Heart of a Shepherd. The audio is available from Libro.fm and probably your public library.

PARRY, Rosanne. A Wolf Called Wander. illus. by Mónica Armiño. 240p. HarperCollins/Greenwillow. May 2019. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9780062895936.

Gr 4-6 –Swift, a yearling wolf, is separated from his family after a rival wolf pack attacks and claims his family’s territory as their own. His thousand-mile journey across the Pacific Northwest to find a new home brings danger, hunger, and desperate loneliness. Inspired by the story of OR-7, a real wolf naturalists tracked in the wild, Parry perfectly conveys her character’s curious, alert, and social nature. Swift’s successes and failures throughout his travels shape a relatable bildungsroman theme. His symbiotic relationship with a raven will delight and intrigue readers, just one example of the abundant information about wolves Parry seamlessly incorporates into this page-turning narrative. Generously illustrated, Armiño’s spot and full-page black-and-white drawings capture the landscape’s stark beauty from the fragility of a bumblebee in flight to the ferocity of an animal attack. The novel’s grim yet blunted depiction of life and death in nature, along with an upbeat ending in which Swift gives himself a new name, make it an ideal middle grade read. The novel would also function well as the fictional component in a classroom lesson about wolves, as the gripping story—and extensive back matter—will inspire students to learn more about the real OR-7. VERDICT: A first purchase for all libraries; deserving of a place alongside Sheila Burnford’s The Incredible Journey, Jack London’s White Fang, and other classic animal adventure novels.–Marybeth Kozikowski, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY

This book was AMAZING!!!!!!!!! It follows a wolf who walked more than 1,000 miles, after its pack got seperated. It all starts when he is a pup, and then follows him until he finds a mate. It has beautiful writing, but it is also very sad. If you are looking for a great book about an animal, this is the right one for you. Some of the scenes get very detailed into things that might be sensitive for some people, so be careful while reading. I would recommend it for 10+

This book is really good it talks about a wolf and his journey across Oregon and some of California, he discovers many things along the way. And he learns many new things. This book is full of cliffhangers and you don't want to stop reading it. It is heartwarming, but some parts are really sad. If you read this then you made a good choice. :)

This is probably the best wolf book there is, it's about a wolf that was born but his REAL name is swift and his pack goes against this pack of wolves that are white then his pack loses and he gets lost and he gets confused he finds two members of his pack but his favorite brother, warm, dies swift is filled with sadness then later on he finds the road, on the other side is a female wolf and her name is night. Swift becomes friends with night and becomes mates then swift changes his name to wander and they have pups and the story ends. I love this book because my favorite animal is wolves and I really got in the book (by imaging it in real life) and I really think if you like wolves and adventure then you'll Really like this book sorry for making this so long but also if your reading or if you read it please comment what you think of it personally I LOVED IT!! “My pack is everything. They are my family.” Swift is a young wolf pup who has never seen the world beyond his pack’s borders. He is safe from all the dangers that lurk right outside their territory—other animals, wolf packs who are more powerful—and most importantly, men, the strange two-legged creatures who are never to be trusted. Ever since he was born, Swift has been warned about the evilness of men, and the terrible things they can do. But until now, he has never needed that knowledge. When a larger group of wolves invades Swift’s pack, he gets separated from them in a whirlwind of teeth and claws. Living without a pack, without other wolves to take care of him, is simply not living. It is just trying to survive in a cold, harsh world that will soon be taken over by men...so why live? But there is something inside Swift, a tiny ember of hope, that thinks there are more wolves around—and maybe they’re from his former pack. Then, he finds his younger brother Warm, and travels with him—until Warm is killed by men, with strange objects that shoot lightning. Swift is deeply saddened...and angry. He wants to get revenge for his brother’s death; but how can he fight men? It turns out he doesn’t have to—because soon, he will meet another wolf who can change his life. Can Swift survive? Only time will tell.

A Wolf Called Wander sensitively traces the journey of a young wolf in his quest for a new home and pack.

A Wolf Called Wander by Roseanne Parry. Greenwilow (HarperCollins), 2019, 235 pages

book review a wolf called wander

Reading Level: Middle Grades, ages 8-10

Recommended for : Ages 8-14

I begin in darkness and my nose tells me everything I know. I have a brother, Sharp. Bigger than me, and all growl. I have sisters Pounce, who loves to wrestle, and Wag, who talks with her tail. And last of all, my brother Warm, who likes to curl up under my chin, the only pup smaller than me.

The wolf pup who begins in darkness, curled up with his litter, will be known as Swift. Speed marks him out from the others and wins him a place in the pack when they go on the hunt. He’s the one who turns the elk or deer herd once their running has revealed the weakest members. He belongs to a successful pack who eats well until their territory is claimed by a rival pack. Then it all falls apart in a fury of wounding, running, chasing, losing. Swift is soon on his own in the Oregon wilderness, separated and on the hunt for food and home.

The author navigates animal conscious as well as she did for humans in Heart of a Shepherd and Last of the Name . The story of Swift is based on the pilgrimage of OR-7, a gray wolf caught and released after fitting him with a radio collar to track his movements. Like Swift, OR-7 was separated from his pack and traveled over 1000 miles before finding a mate and a home northern California. Animal lovers will find Swift’s trek thrilling, with its dangers and comforts and unexpected allies. The narrative is straightforward, and free of the heavy misandry of Pax and similar animal-in-the-wild stories.

A Wolf Called Wander

Here's our family review of A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry, a brand new middle grade book out on May 7th.

A Wolf Called Wander

Last week I read A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry aloud with my kids. I was told it was a great read for people who enjoyed Pax by Sara Pennypacker (which my kids very much enjoyed), so we went into it with high expectations.

It was just released this week (May 7th) and I'm excited to tell you all about it!

Review of A Wolf Called Wander

The book begins in a wolf den with a new litter of wolves, still gaining their sight. It's a true fact that young wolves don't normally leave the den where they are born for at least three weeks! There are four pups in the den, but the story is narrated by just one of them.

The main character is a wolf, originally named Swift. The first chapters follow his early life with the other wolf cubs and their pack in the mountains. But when a rival wolf pack attacks, Swift is separated from his family and he begins a lone migration across many long miles.

The story of Swift, who later renames himself Wander after his big journey, is based on the true story of a wolf called OR-7 who traveled a thousand miles across the Pacific Northwest. And although this is obviously a fictional account from a wolf's perspective, it feels very much like a true story.

A Wolf Called Wander Photographs at the end of the book

A Wolf Called Wander is very realistic. There is not a lot of dialogue, there are no human main characters, and the wolves act very much like wolves would and should in real life.

It's a fantastic book for your animal loving kids. You can learn so much about wolves and all the intricacies of wolf behavior from this story. That being said, because it's so realistic, there are descriptions of wolves killing elk and other animals and descriptions of them eating their prey. There are some parts that get a little intense.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "graphic," but it is very realistic. This isn't a cute animal story with friendly talking wolves. It's not that kind of book.

But if you have kids that love learning about animals, love watching a good nature documentary, and are aware of the predator vs. prey relationship in nature, then this is a really great book!  There was one scene that involved the wolf re-opening one of his wounds to drink his own blood that was intense enough that my girls begged me to skip it (which I did), but my kids really enjoyed reading this. We all felt like we learned so much!

A Wolf Called Wander illustrations inside the book

What We Loved

The book is full of detailed illustrations, which really brought the book to life for my kids. Plus, at the end of the book, there's a whole section with real photographs of wolves and the real wolf this story was based on. There's also a section at the end with wolf facts so your young naturalists will be wolf experts by the time they finish reading.

I thought it made a great family read aloud. The story was fast paced enough that we finished reading it in only four bedtime reading sessions. The kids had a hard time stopping every night because every chapter left them wondering what was going to happen next to the wolf. The writing was also so lyrical - it made a beautiful read aloud.

Since we finished last week, my kids have already flipped back through the book to reread parts and look at the pictures. I even found a little notebook laying around that one of my kids had copied a bunch of the wolf facts into. I think it's safe to say it was a hit!

I think it's also safe to say that if you enjoyed Pax by Sara Pennypacker , there's a good chance that you'll enjoy this one too. Also consider Fox 8 by George Saunders .

book review a wolf called wander

My Adult Perspective

As an adult reading the book, I really appreciated what Rosanne Parry accomplished in A Wolf Called Wander . I took an Environmental History Class in graduate school that gave me a better understanding and appreciation for both wolves and coyotes. They have been misunderstood, poorly treated players in the natural world, despite how necessary and important they really are.

I loved reading this story from the wolf's perspective! There was a chapter where men show up to protect their cattle from the wolves and chase them, spotlight them, shoot them. It was so good to have a really nuanced discussion with my kids and talk with them about both the wolves' perspective as well as the humans' perspective.

I think it's wonderful that Roseanne Parry wrote a book that can help both kids and adults see wolves in an entirely new way, and maybe even appreciate them a little more.

One of my favorite parts of the book was observing how the wolf interacted with the ravens. I had no idea that they actually worked together in the wild - a friendship of sorts. It was so fascinating.

That's really the conclusion we all arrived at: A Wolf Called Wander is a FASCINATING book! I highly recommend it for animal lovers and young naturalists.

If you're reading it aloud it's great for 6 and up (with my one caveat above). If your kids want to read on their own, probably 10 and up, but maybe 8 and up.

You can find A Wolf Called Wander (from Harper Collins)  here on Amazon.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are entirely my own.

This book is the best book I have ever read in my entire life. Though I wish they came out with a second A WOLF CALLED WANDER that tells what are swift’s children called and a life of swift’s life like as a father. So many more questions to ask but I’m going to save them. Oh I’m beginning you to make a second. Pleasssssssse.

A WOLF CALLED WANDER

by Rosanne Parry ; illustrated by Mónica Armiño ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 7, 2019

A sympathetic, compelling introduction to wolves from the perspective of one wolf and his memorable journey.

Separated from his pack, Swift, a young wolf, embarks on a perilous search for a new home.

Swift’s mother impresses on him early that his “pack belongs to the mountains and the mountains belong to the pack.” His father teaches him to hunt elk, avoid skunks and porcupines, revere the life that gives them life, and “carry on” when their pack is devastated in an attack by enemy wolves. Alone and grieving, Swift reluctantly leaves his mountain home. Crossing into unfamiliar territory, he’s injured and nearly dies, but the need to run, hunt, and live drives him on. Following a routine of “walk-trot-eat-rest,” Swift traverses prairies, canyons, and deserts, encountering men with rifles, hunger, thirst, highways, wild horses, a cougar, and a forest fire. Never imagining the “world could be so big or that I could be so alone in it,” Swift renames himself Wander as he reaches new mountains and finds a new home. Rife with details of the myriad scents, sounds, tastes, touches, and sights in Swift/Wander’s primal existence, the immediacy of his intimate, first-person, present-tense narration proves deeply moving, especially his longing for companionship. Realistic black-and-white illustrations trace key events in this unique survival story, and extensive backmatter fills in further factual information about wolves and their habitat.

FINALLY, SOMETHING MYSTERIOUS

FINALLY, SOMETHING MYSTERIOUS

From the one and onlys series , vol. 1.

by Doug Cornett ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 14, 2020

Delightful fun for budding mystery fans.

Only children, rejoice! A cozy mystery just for you! (People with siblings will probably enjoy it too.)

Debut novelist Cornett introduces the One and Onlys, a trio of mystery-solving only kids: Gloria Longshanks “Shanks” Hill, Alexander “Peephole” Calloway, and narrator Paul (alas, no nickname) Marconi. The trio has a knack for finding and solving low-level mysteries, but they come up against a true head-scratcher when the yard of a resident of their small town is covered in rubber ducks overnight. Working ahead of Officer Portnoy, who’s a little on the slow side, can Paul, Shanks, and Peephole solve the mystery? Cornett has a lot of fun with this adventure, dropping additional side mysteries, a subplot about small businesses, big corporations, and economics, and a town’s love of bratwurst into the mix. Most importantly, he plays fair with the clues throughout, allowing astute readers to potentially solve the case ahead of the trio. The tone and mystery are perfect for younger readers who want to test their detective skills but are put off by anything scary or gory. The pacing would serve well for chapter-by-chapter read-alouds. If there are any quibbles, it’s the lack of diversity of the cast, as it defaults white. Diversity exists in small towns, and this one is crying out for more. Hopefully a sequel will introduce additional faces.

ESCAPE

by K.R. Alexander ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 7, 2022

Thrills galore for gamers willing to go along for the ride.

A new virtual-reality theme park goes haywire on a crowd of young victims, er, visitors in Alexander’s latest screamfest.

Having scored one of just 100 coveted preview tickets to a cutting-edge, kids-only venue dubbed ESCAPE, budding amusement park fan and designer Cody Baxter is looking forward to a life-changing experience. What he gets is more of a life-threatening one, as games and rides with names like Triassic Terror and Haunted Hillside not only pit him against a monster and then zombies—or sometimes a monster and zombies—as well as ruthless competing players, but seem tailored to play on individual personal terrors. And, in some never explained way, the VR quickly turns into real battles that inflict real wounds even as the real settings shift with sudden, dizzying unpredictability. Teaming up with loyal new friends Jayson Torn and Inga Andersdottir, the former described as being Japanese and White and the latter as Norwegian, Cody (who seems to default to White) struggles for survival, learning ultimately that ESCAPE was created by an evil genius with an ulterior motive who is convinced that he can teach children a salutary lesson. The plot’s no more logical in its twists and contrivances than the premise, but the author’s knack for spinning out nightmarish situations is definitely on display here as the tale careens toward a properly lurid outcome.

Swift, a young wolf cub, lives with his pack in the mountains learning to hunt, competing with his brothers and sisters for hierarchy, and watching over a new litter of cubs. Then a rival pack attacks, and Swift and his family scatter.

Alone and scared, Swift must flee and find a new home. His journey takes him a remarkable one thousand miles across the Pacific Northwest. The trip is full of peril, and Swift encounters forest fires, hunters, highways, and hunger before he finds his new home.

Inspired by the true story of a wolf named OR-7 (or Journey).

General Book Info

  • Publisher’s age group:  ages 8-12
  • Main character(s):  Swift (later renamed to “Wander”), pup—adult
  • Character quality:  low
  • Setting:  Contemporary; wandering across Washington, Oregon, and California

✝️  Biblical:  N/A

📚  Educational:  Possibly more information about wolves throughout the story; facts about animals in the back of the book; the path that the real wolf OR-7/Journey took

🪄  Occult:  LOTS of anthropomorphism of the wolves (talking, thinking human thoughts, unrealistic sibling rivalry, being grateful for the life of the animal after they killed it, etc.)

☠️  Violence/Death/Fear:  Mention of hunting/killing other animals; a “red and runny lump” (referencing bloody meat); sibling rivalry; they battled with a rival pack that included Swift trying to drown a wolf and feeling happy and proud when one fell backward onto spikes and died

🤬  Profanity:  N/A

🚬  Drugs/Drinking/Smoking:  N/A

💋  Romantic/Sexual:  N/A

[I discerned this book a “No”.]

I have read A Wolf Called Wander twice: once before I became a Christian and the second time after I became born again. Since I provide honest, discerned book reviews, I had to look past the beautiful illustrations and the exciting story of Swift to get to the things the average reader doesn’t pick up on (myself included when I read it the first time!). Only getting a couple dozen pages in, I picked up on a few things that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

First off, the author was treating the animals like they were people! Swift was constantly trying to beat his brother, Sharp, they talked to each other (any of you know wolves that talk?), and the wolves had too many human thoughts and feelings. I have yet to read a fiction book from an animal’s point of view that doesn’t anthropomorphize them.

Reflecting on the first time I read this book and from other reviews, I noticed that there are many instances of blood, killing, and violence as this is a book about the life of a predator. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just something I thought I would mention.

The thing that really set me off was when Swift led a competitor wolf away from their grounds and was joyous when he was impaled on spikes! If a human did that, it would be easy to see that this book has major issues, but since animals are the ones performing the actions, it goes practically unobserved. When I read the verse below, I immediately thought of this book.

Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles Proverbs 24:17 (NKJV)

Continue to keep your eye out for these subtle and deceiving books!

Nice eye with this book & noticing the subtle way authors “get away” with writing about dark things that would be appalling if they had been about humans, but are deemed “innocent” when it’s from an animal’s POV instead. Thank you for providing another transparent & discerning book review!

A Wolf Called Wander Summary & Study Guide

A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry

(approx. 2 pages at 400 words per page)

A Wolf Called Wander Summary & Study Guide Description

The following version of the book was used to create this study guide: Parry, Rosanne, A Wolf Called Wander. Harper Collins, New York, NY, 2019. Kindle AZW file.

Wander's first memories are the smells of the tunnel where he and his four siblings are born. The most important wolf in his life is Mother, who occasionally leaves the tunnel and returns with the scents of things that Wander has yet to experience. Wander and his siblings, Sharp, Warm, Pounce, and Wag begin to establish themselves within their family, with Sharp always the largest and strongest and Warm the one that Wander always turns to for comfort. Wander's life is secure within the tunnel; but, he longs to go outside, even though Mother has given them strict instructions not to cross the entrance of the tunnel.

One day, Wander is venturing just past the entrance when a large male wolf appears. His voice prompts Wander to bow, though he does not understand the instinct. The wolf is Growl, the only adult male of their pack other than Father. Growl was injured in a fire and has the task of helping watch over the pups. He soon begins to teach them, and a lesson about wildfire is later instrumental in saving Wander's life. Father arrives and formally lays claim to each pup. As Wander becomes more determined to become a leader himself, he spends more time with Father, who teaches him about their world. He is never to touch the skunk, and the porcupine is an animal that commands respect. Elk is their food of choice. Father is dismissive of smaller game, as he believes they are beneath the notice of a true wolf.

When Wander is a couple of of years old, Mother introduces another litter of pups. Wander soon identifies one as his favorite and takes special care that she gets enough food. One day, the pack is involved with the pups and does not notice the approach of a rival pack. That fatal mistake leads to the deaths of Father and Growl and sends the others scattering. Wander is injured when he tries to take down an elk on his own. He briefly meets up with Warm, who is also injured. They are soon separated from each other. Wander knows that Warm is probably dead, and he begins to travel.

Over the next month, Wander journeys through a prairie – much different from the mountain area where he grew up. He has the company of a raven for awhile, and the bird helps him find food and water. However, the raven soon joins a “pack” of ravens. Though Wander is lonely, he does not blame the raven. Wander faces other dangers, including a highway, thirst, hunger, and a wildfire that sends him and all the other animals racing for their lives. After being alone for weeks, Wander finds a long black wolf, a female who introduces herself as Night. Night wants to know that Wander will provide for her, and he pledges to do so. He knows that he would do anything to protect her. She soon slips away to have pups in a tunnel, and Wander brings her food while she tends their young. He realizes that he has what he had longed for – a pack of his own.
