One’s particular contribution, position, argument, or viewpoint is commonly referred to as the thesis and, according to Gerring et al. (2004), a good thesis is one that is “new, true, and significant” (p. 2). To strengthen a thesis, one might consider presenting an argument that goes against what is currently accepted within the field while carefully addressing counterarguments and adequately explaining why the issue under consideration matters (Gerring et al., 2004). The thesis is particularly important because readers want to know whether the writer has something new or worthwhile to say about the topic. Thus, as you review the literature, before writing, it is important to find gaps and creative linkages between viewpoints with the goal of contributing innovative ideas to an ongoing discussion. For a contribution to be worthwhile you must read the literature carefully and without bias; doing this will enable you to identify some of the subtle differences in the viewpoints presented by different authors and help you to better identify the gaps in the literature. Evaluation  I always go back to that particular situation and wonder whether I could have acted better. The situation helped me better understand the importance of good communication in patient care, particularly in therapeutic care. Before the incident, I didn't acknowledge the role of nurses play in caring for patient's emotional needs. I realized nurses must show compassion and console patients in their low moments.  Analysis  Most healthcare professionals do not know how to deliver bad news to patients. They find the process extremely challenging and always feel psychologically unprepared. This has a negative impact on patients and could lead to bad health outcomes. Furthermore, how information is relayed could impact a patient's adherence to treatment. Because of these effects, multiple protocols and approaches were developed to help with communicating bad news to patients. One of the approaches that was proposed is emotion-centered. This proposes that a healthcare provider acknowledges how sad the patient is and builds a professional relationship based on empathy and sympathy. Action Plan I now understand the essence of communicating bad news with compassion. The experience allowed me to look closely at different aspects of my professional development that needed more improvement. Thus, I plan to be more empathetic and speak up in support of patient's emotional and psychological well-being, especially when presented with traumatic news about their health. Additionally, I now understand I am not powerless when dealing with a sorrowful patient. I believe I have learned from my experience, and I'm not able to communicate well with patients any more. Conclusion  The experience allowed me to value good communication in nursing and the need to incorporate it into daily nurse-patient interaction. This article examines the requirements for planning and writing academic essays. It considers the reasons for writing them, and explains how best to plan and prepare the work for presentatitm. For most of us, writing essays began in our early school years. Few of us will remember details of those early efforts, although how we were prepared for them will undoubtedly have influenced our work in later years. For the lucky few who seem to succeed, apparently with little effort, writing essays might not be a problem. For the majority, however, the thought of having to write an essay of several thousand words could resemble the prospect of having a tooth pulled. One initial concern could be how anyone could possibly produce so many words on any single topic. In addition, there is often a fear of failure ( 1 , 2 ). Each of these concerns can lie overcome by employing some basic principles.

How confident are you in your ability to write academic essays? If you are a student nurse in your first year of training then your answer will depend largely on your previous success, or not, in GCSEs, A levels and the equivalent. If you entered nursing via an alternative route that had less emphasis on traditional academic preparation, then your confidence in writing an essay that draws on referenced literature will probably be much reduced. Even if you were quite strong at school or college work, you may find the transition to self-directed degree study quite difficult. If you are a qualified nurse with a pre-registration diploma or degree, returning to university study to complete a post-registration master's degree, you may still have reservations about your ability to re-engage with academic writing. If you are confident of your ability to communicate nursing theory and its application to clinical care, then this series of articles is probably not for you! However, my experience of teaching nurses, from first-year students to specialist nurses undertaking PhDs, is that very few are confident in their academic writing skills.

Academic ability versus academic writing

For most nurses who struggle with academic skills, it is usually not their innate academic ability that is the problem, but the lack of specific skills required to research the question and then communicate valid findings in a reliable way. For student nurses, this is about understanding where the body of nursing knowledge lies, be that the literature, protocols or clinical practice, how to access it and then communicate those findings. For the experienced nurse undertaking a post-registration degree, it is about dusting off library skills, getting to grips with different IT, exploring the knowledge base relevant to, but outside, pure nursing, understanding the relevance and use of clinical experience and, finally, mastering the skills of writing a long essay that communicates knowledge, experience and innovative ideas.

What ‘sister says’

When I trained as a nurse, it was in pre-university and pre-diploma or degree days; the ward sister or the medical consultant was the source of knowledge. Students quickly learned to develop their nursing skills according to what ‘sister says’: ward sisters and ward routines were the source of knowledge and authority. As nursing research and evidence-based protocols developed and began to inform nursing practice in the 1980s, the source of knowledge moved away from this and included ‘what the literature says’. Nurse training was underpinned at diploma level, validated by a university system that stressed the importance of referencing published materials as the source of authority. As the scientific base and the wealth of nursing-related literature increased over the next 20 years, student nurses were required not just to refer to the literature, but to demonstrate their discussion and critical review of a body of knowledge based on valid and robust evidence; this was reflected in the move to make nursing an all-graduate profession in the early 2010s. In what ways has this transition from ‘sister says’ to the ‘literature says’ changed the way we inform our practice?

Has our ability to apply knowledge to clinical practice changed?

To inform clinical practice and develop clinical expertise, a nurse needs to take various aspects of evidence, evaluate its appropriateness and then apply it to a specific patient or clinical situation. This was true when I was a student nurse and the source of knowledge was the ward sister. It is equally true today when the source of knowledge is more literature-based. What has changed is the origin of the knowledge. In my student days it was probably 85% ward sister and 15% text books. Today it is more like 40% clinical staff and 60% evidenced-based literature. To inform clinical practice, we need to assess the validity and reliability of the knowledge, both clinical- and literature-based, evaluate it and then apply it to clinical care. The difficulty that nursing has over the pure biological science healthcare professions, such as pharmacy and medical sciences, is that a significant proportion of nursing practice draws from the social sciences concerned with feelings and interactions. When a patient is in pain, we know we can draw upon the science of pharmacology and pain administration protocols, but it is only our observation of experienced staff and our own experiential learning that guides us as to when to hold a hand, sit by the bedside or ask about the patient's worries regarding family or pets. Communicating this interaction of hard biological science, evidence-based protocols and the application of softer caring skills is a difficult, yet important, part of academic writing for the nurse. How do we write an essay that justifies the possible benefits of holding a patient's hand, when there are no randomised controlled trials to support its application?

This forthcoming series will explore all the practicalities of planning an essay, managing the literature, developing structure and content, but it will not lose sight of this important principle of incorporating holistic clinical nursing care into academic writing.

If you know you want to be a nurse, you probably have quite a few reasons for that. Instead of merely relying on your academic and test performances to tell your story, you get the opportunity in your essays to share exactly why you’re so passionate about nursing. Writing about this can be a clarifying and even exciting process. This article explains why college application essays matter and how you should write about why you want to become a nurse.

Grades and test scores matter when you’re applying to college, but your essays can help improve your chances of admission. They’re how you can express your experiences and make your desire to become a nurse clear and personal.

If your prospective school doesn’t have supplemental essays, it’s a good idea to include your interest in nursing in your Common App essay . This could mean that you end up with two different drafts of the essay: one for if there are supplemental essays where you can discuss your interests in nursing and one for if there are not. You’ll change them out depending on whether you also have to respond to specific prompts about why you want to pursue nursing. This may not sound like much fun, but it will help you be admitted to your school of choice.

It might seem exciting to apply to a place where you don’t have to write extra essays—it’s less work! If you don’t do that additional work, though, you’ll have fewer chances to explain yourself. You might not be able to share exactly why you think that you’re the right fit for a certain college or program. 

If you are writing supplemental essays for the colleges that you’re interested in, you can include more details about your passion for nursing. You’ll often be asked, “why this major?” or “why this school?” When you have those opportunities to share your specific reasons, you can let yourself get personal and go deep into your passion. Use that space to share important details about who you are.

Start Broad

When writing essays entirely about why you want to pursue nursing , try to start from a broad interest, then slowly work your way to telling specific personal stories and goals. 

When first thinking about your general interest in nursing, ask yourself what attracts you to the work of being a nurse. This can lead to powerful potential responses. Maybe you like taking care of people in the community. Perhaps you’ve always known that you wanted to make a difference in the healthcare profession, but you don’t want to be a doctor. You’d rather make patients’ healthcare experiences as comfortable and pleasant as possible. 

After you’ve described these broad, overarching motivations for wanting to go into nursing, consider any personal experiences that have made you want to be a nurse. Think about moments you’ve had during hospital visits or checkups or an anecdote from a time that you decided to volunteer in a healthcare role. Once you’ve written these stories, you can end the essay by discussing your planned major and career goals.

Discuss Your Future Goals

If you know what your end goal is, be sure to include it. You can write about becoming a registered nurse or maybe a nurse practitioner. It doesn’t have to be set in stone , but sharing a final ambition can help anchor your personal narrative. Writing about the future that you want can help the admissions officer reading your essay see how you view yourself. If they can do this, they’ll better understand your values and motivations and see you as a real candidate for their school. 

You don’t have to follow this pattern exactly. For example, it can be powerful to begin your essay in the middle of the action—you can dive right into an anecdote and get the reader interested in your story from the jump. 

While you should avoid dramatization, starting with a few clear, memorable scenes or a line or two of dialogue can make for an instantly interesting essay. All of this helps you show your passion, rather than simply explaining what intrigues you about a nursing career. 

Once you’ve led with your narrative, though, remember to ground it in clear reasons for your intended career and what you want your future to look like. A good essay will be balanced between the past, present, and future. It’s how a college will see who you are and everything that you have to offer.

Nursing students achieve publication success in leading journals

Six nursing students from the College of Health Sciences and Professions' NRSE 7001 - Professional Presence and Writing for the Advanced Nurse course have recently achieved publication success in prestigious peer-reviewed journals.

One of the course assignments is to write a letter to the editor in response to a recent journal article and submit it to the publication.

  • An Associate Degree in nursing from a regionally-accredited college or university OR a nursing diploma earned from a school of nursing or teaching hospital.

Conditionally admitted students who have submitted proof of conferred A.S. Nursing degree and not yet passed the NCLEX-RN® may only take non-NUR courses and NUR 600 Enhancing Your Nursing Career and may not proceed with other NUR courses until they have an active RN license.

Degree Requirements

Writing program requirements.

All bachelor's degree candidates are required to complete four writing intensive courses as part of the University Writing Program Requirements as follows:

Writing Intensive courses are identified with the label "Writing Intensive Course" in the "Attributes" section of the course description and/or a W following the course number.

Core Curriculum General Education Requirements-Satisfied with Associate Degree

An applicant with a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in another discipline will be required to take only the 30 credits of nursing courses, in addition to meeting the Writing Intensive requirements. MTH 504 Statistics will be required if not satisfied in transfer.

Major Requirements

A minimum grade of C is required in all Major coursework. Students are allowed a maximum of two course overlaps. Overlaps can be used between Major, Minor and General Education requirements with only one overlap being utilized between the Major and Minor.

For CRIT 602 , SOCI/SOSC Elective, and IDIS 601 : Students who do not achieve a C or better may repeat each course one time only.

For all HLTC and NUR courses: Students are allowed to repeat only one of these required courses. Any other course failures may only be repeated with departmental approval. Subsequent failures will result in dismissal from the nursing program.

A minimum GPA of 2.5 in the major is required.

Prerequisite: Conferred Associate Degree in Nursing Required, Registered Nursing License Required

Prior to capstone enrollment, students are expected to complete the majority of their required major courses along with CRIT 602 Advanced Critical Analysis and Strategic Thinking   and IDIS 601 Interdisciplinary Seminar . Students should consult with their advisor regarding specific major courses that may be completed with their capstone. Academic Advisor approval is required for registration to be processed.

Statistics is a prerequisite for NUR 615 Evidence-Based Nursing as well as proof of conferred A.S. Nursing degree or nursing diploma. Academic Advisor approval is required for registration to be processed.

Open electives are courses students will need to take in addition to their general education and major requirements in order to satisfy the remaining credit totals for their programs. Open electives are defined as any credit course offered by the College not already included in the student's general education, major, option or minor. Students will need 120 credits total to graduate with a bachelor's degree from the Online Division of the College of Professional Studies.

This degree plan is a sample and does not reflect the impact of transfer credit or current course offerings. UNH CPS Online undergraduate students should develop individual academic plans with their academic advisor during their first year at UNH.

  • Use a variety of technologies to intervene in health-related problems of individuals, families, communities, and within the health care system.
  • Identify, evaluate, apply and/or compile evidence from a variety of resources to apply to health-related problems of individuals, families, communities, and the health care system.
  • Collaborate as a member and/or leader of teams characterized by effective communication and mutual respect that enhance the quality of health care services and their delivery.

Baptist Anderson scholarships awarded to seven MCC nursing students

MCC Associate Degree Nursing Program students who received scholarships from Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center are celebrated during a reception. With them are College leaders and Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center officials.  

"By becoming a nurse, I want to make a difference in someone else's life by nursing them back to health and helping them live healthy lives."  

That's how Meridian Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program student Rebecca Campbell explained her reason for pursuing a nursing career. "Not only do I want to care for others, but I want to make a difference," she said.  

Campbell, who is 20 years old and from Toxey, Alabama, is on her way to becoming a nurse, and thanks to Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center, she was one of seven MCC students who received scholarships to continue their studies in the College's ADN program.   

The scholarships are $2,500 each.  

For 36 years, ADN students at the College have benefited from scholarships from the Meridian-based medical center. Recipients are full-time students who post grade B or better in nursing courses and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Faculty evaluations and personal essays are also used in the selection process.    

At a luncheon honoring the students and guests, John Anderson, Administrator/CEO of Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center, said, "Nursing is no less than a calling. It is a critical service."  

MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner noted that the partnership between MCC and Baptist Anderson is strong. "We are so thankful for this," he said.   

Echoing his comments, MCC Associate Vice President of Nursing and Health Care Education Dr. Lara Collum added, "Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center is a career partner to MCC, and this partnership enhances our nursing program. I am grateful for your support and collaboration. The scholarships will impact lives and help students reach their career goals, so your investment in these students makes a difference, and we thank you for that."  

Dr. Collum said the seven recipients are "very hard-working students in their program."  

Mallory Ross, 33, of Florence, was the recipient of the Dr. Jeff Hollingsworth Scholarship. Dr. Hollingsworth, the grandson of Dr. Jeff Anderson, was a cardiovascular surgeon in Jackson and was instrumental in getting the Cardiac Catheterization program started in Meridian. Dr. Hollingsworth passed away in 1986. This scholarship was established in 1988 to honor Dr. Hollingsworth.   

Rebecca Campbell, 20, of Toxey, Alabama, received the Dr. Jeff Anderson Scholarship. Dr. Jeff Anderson founded Anderson Infirmary in 1928. At that time, the hospital had room to accommodate 30 patients and was staffed by three physicians and a handful of nurses. Dr. Anderson's vision for the future and his commitment to providing quality medical care for the residents in East Central Mississippi and West Central Alabama are the foundation of what has now grown to be Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center, a 400-bed medical center with over 160 physicians representing more than 38 specialties. The scholarship was created in 2004 to honor Dr. Anderson.   

Emily Arias, 20, of Bailey, was awarded the Dr. W. J. Anderson III Scholarship. Dr. Anderson was the son of Dr. William J. Anderson and the grandson of hospital founder Dr. Jeff Anderson. Dr. Anderson was a general surgeon from 1962 until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Anderson served as president and chairman of the board of directors at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center until his death in October 2002. This scholarship was created in 2003 to honor Dr. Anderson's visionary leadership in the hospital.   

Amber Lewis, 31, of Florence, received the Reuben S. Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Johnson began his 47-year service at Anderson Regional Medical Center in 1947. He was president and chairman of the board for 38 years. He was instrumental in the successful transformation of the hospital from a small infirmary to what became Anderson Regional Medical Center. Johnson also served as the internal management consultant from 1976 until he died in 1994. The scholarship was created in 2007 to honor Johnson's many accomplishments.   

Receiving the Dr. William J. Anderson Jr. Scholarships was Keleigh Moore, 20, of Meridian. Dr. Anderson was the son of Dr. Jeff Anderson, the founder of the hospital. Dr. Anderson served as a general surgeon at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. The scholarship was created in 1988, a year after his passing, to honor the many accomplishments of Dr. Anderson.   

Keri Hans, 27, of Meridian, received the William J. Gunn, Esquire, Scholarship. Gunn began his service at the medical center in 1965 as secretary to the board of directors and general counsel for the hospital. In 1967, he became a board of directors member and continued his faithful service until his death in August 2001. The scholarship was created in 2002 to honor Gunn's service to the hospital.   

Andrea Sciple, 29, of DeKalb, was the Baptist Anderson Board of Directors Scholarship recipient. The board works behind the scenes to ensure that Dr. Jeff Anderson's vision to give quality health care to the people of our region is carried out. Each member brings expertise in a different area that enhances the quality of care given to patients. These individuals work tirelessly and with very little recognition for their labor. The scholarship was created in 2012 to recognize the valuable contributions of each board member.

Samantha Boch, PhD, RN, assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing and affiliate faculty of the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Children's Hospital is one of 16 nurse scientists accepted to the fifth cohort of the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators . The fellowship program, funded by grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation , recognizes and advances early-to-mid-career nursing scholars and innovators with a high potential to accelerate leadership in nursing research, practice, education, policy and entrepreneurship.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation seeks to prepare nurses as collaborative leaders with the skills and confidence to inspire others, enact change and challenge the status quo. Through the creation of the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators, the foundation supports nurse leaders who take ideas to scale that advance high-quality, high-value care and optimal health outcomes.

“Our motto is UC Nurses. We See Leaders ,” Interim Dean Gordon Gillespie, PhD, DNP, RN, FAAN, says. “Sam is the epitome of a nursing leader and scholar; I can’t wait to see the impact her project will have in advancing health equity and education in our country.”

As a part of the three-year fellowship program , Boch will receive $450,000 to conduct an innovative project focused on better understanding the health of and use of health services by children in foster care who also experience parental incarceration. Mentored by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital CHECK (Comprehensive Health Evaluations for Cincinnati’s Kids) Foster Care Center Medical Director Mary Greiner, MD, MS, and Scientific Director for Child Welfare Research Sarah Beal, PhD, Boch will leverage CHECK’s data to identify opportunities to better care for those children.

She will also partner with Ebony Underwood, CEO & Founder of WE GOT US NOW , the nation’s leading organization advancing the wellbeing of children and young adults with incarcerated parents, to co-design care guidelines for children who experience parental incarceration.

"I am thrilled to be in partnership with Sam,” Underwood says. “Her commitment to uplifting and elevating the subject matter expertise of those closest to this issue is a testament to her leadership and dedication in advancing the health equity and well-being for the vulnerable population of children impacted by parental incarceration."

A forensic nurse scientist, Boch’s program of research centers on the social determinants of health with particular emphasis on understanding and mitigating the consequences of mass incarceration on child and family health.

“I’m deeply honored to have been chosen as part of the cohort for the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators,” says Boch. “This is a unique opportunity to further develop my leadership skills and partner with amazing organizations, mentors, and individuals with lived experiences of parental incarceration to positively impact care and the health of these families.”

Admissions officers sift through thousands of essays every year. What stops them in their tracks? An authentic voice that leaps off the page. The best essays have clear, coherent language and are free of errors. The story is clearly and specifically told. After drafting, take the time to revise and polish your writing. Seek feedback from teachers, mentors, or trusted friends, but ensure the final piece is unmistakably yours. A well-crafted essay showcases your diligence and attention to detail—qualities that admissions officers highly value. UNM College of Nursing Receives Gift to Fund Scholarships

Health care providers see increasingly complex patients and have an expanding and changing scope of practice and available treatments to address the needs of their patients and their families.

“Health care providers see increasingly complex patients and have an expanding and changing scope of practice and available treatments to address the needs of their patients and their families,” says College of Nursing Interim Dean Carolyn Montoya, PhD, RN, CPNP, FAAN, FAANP. “This is why getting a DNP is so important for our nurse practitioners and nurse-midwives.”

DNP students already have a bachelor’s degree and are returning to transition from registered nurses to nurse practitioners or nurse-midwives with independent full-scope practice, including full prescriptive authority in New Mexico. As DNP students hold an undergraduate degree and are already in the nursing workforce, they may have difficulty securing traditional grants and scholarships. This gift from Western Sky Community Care will alleviate the financial burdens associated with returning to school and allow students who may have not been able to return to school for an advanced degree to receive an education that ultimately benefits New Mexico health care.

“Western Sky Community Care’s generous gift will be of significant help to our students, allowing them to focus on their studies, without the worry of excessive debt after graduation,” says Montoya.

Western Sky Community Care, a Medicaid managed care organization located in Albuquerque, funded the scholarships after identifying a need for nursing care in rural New Mexico. The gift will support nurse practitioners and nurse-midwifery students who plan to care for patients in the areas of rural health, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, nurse-midwifery, maternal-child health, and other health care areas. In addition, the funds will cover all anticipated educational costs, including tuition and fees, housing, food, textbooks and supplies, transportation and test preparation.
