5 tips on being a kinder neighbor and fostering a sense of community

Do you know your neighbors? Like really know them? Their first names, the types of cars they drive, what holidays they celebrate? If you ever get locked out of your house, could you go to your neighbor's to grab a spare key?

According to a 2018 Pew Research study , roughly a quarter of adults under 30 report that they don't know any of their neighbors.

But there's a sense of comfort and safety that can come with knowing them — and building a safe and caring community is a valuable way to stay connected to the place you live.

Learning how to be a kind neighbor is a skill that's good to learn at a young age, and Chris Loggins knows all about that. He's the supervising producer of the animated children's show Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood from Fred Rogers Productions. "The show is for two to four year olds and it is directly inspired by Mister Rogers' Neighborhood ," he says.

"In each episode, there's a strategy song. Each of them has a catchy tune and easy-to-remember lyrics that help kids develop important social and emotional skills."

We spoke with Loggins and other community building experts about ways we can strive to be kinder, more caring neighbors. While many of these tips are for young people, they are also applicable to the parents and adults in the room.

Get to know your neighbors

It may seem obvious, but getting to know your neighbors is the first step to becoming a kind neighbor. Get out of your comfort zone and make an effort to learn their names and what they do for work. And if you feel comfortable, let them know that you're there to help, if they ever need another hand.

Loggins shares that after a recent move, his new neighbors helped him and his family feel welcome by making sure that his family had things set up. He emphasizes that it doesn't take a lot of money or a grand gesture to be an active neighbor. "You don't have to show up with a fresh apple pie or anything like that," he says. It's truly as simple as saying hello, introducing yourself and asking an open-ended question.

Make small kind gestures a daily practice

Another way to take care of your neighborhood, and to show your neighbors that you care, is by making small acts of kindness a daily practice. This can be cleaning up litter or even cleaning up after the pets on your block.

Use the skills and resources available to you — maybe you aren't a baker, but you have an amazing garden. You can ask your partner or kids to help you pick flowers from your garden to give your new neighbor a bouquet. Remember, every small gesture counts.

Remind yourself that being connected feels good

It can feel so easy to just go home, close your door and turn on the TV without having to make small talk, but connecting with others is worth the effort. As nerve-wracking as it is, reaching out to new people can actually boost your mood in the long run. According to an article by Emma Seppälä , "social connectedness ... generates a positive feedback loop of social, emotional and physical well-being."

Accept The Awkwardness: How To Make Friends (And Keep Them)

And if you take the first step, your small acts of kindness can encourage others to pay that kindness forward — making even more people feel good.

Marta Zaraska , who is the author of Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100 , shares that once in 2013, "there was an instance in Winnipeg at a local Tim Hortons, where one driver decided to pay for the meal or the coffee of the driver behind him at the drive-thru. And that driver was so grateful, he decided to pay for the driver behind him." According to reports on this incident, the chain of kindness went on for more than 200 drivers!

Meet and engage with different people

Encouraging your kids to get out there and engage with your neighbors is important, but it isn't always easy to balance this with conversations on safety and the so-called stranger danger. Like every parent, Zach Norris , who's the executive director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland, Calif., had to work on this with his daughters.

"We need to call into consciousness that this idea of the so-called bad guy and the way in which the so-called bad guy has been leveraged in ways that actually make us less safe," he says. "Most often, harm is done by people that we know. And that includes for children who are some of the most vulnerable folks in our society."

Being told you can't trust the people around you doesn't exactly inspire community, and children pick up on that. One way to combat this stranger danger outlook, he says, is by reaching out of your comfort zone and engaging with different people in your neighborhood alongside your kids.

Norris, for instance, takes his daughters to events where they hear from "amazing leaders who are incredible and empathetic, and also who are formerly incarcerated, who have committed some acts that may have caused harm, that they have made amends for. And I think those are some of the experiences that we expose them to that I think helped them to understand safety in a more dynamic way," he says.

Check your implicit bias

Looking out for your neighbors is an important part of being in a community. But before you go all "neighborhood watch" on someone, if something is making you feel unsafe, Norris suggests you take a deeper look at the power dynamics at play: Why do you feel like someone doesn't "fit in" your neighborhood? Why are you inclined to call the police on someone?

Remember to check your bias, and ask yourself why you feel uncomfortable and unsafe, rather than putting the blame on your neighbors.

When asked what someone should do before calling the police on someone in their neighborhood, Norris advises asking themselves whether another person is being "actively harmed."

Getting to know your neighbors and taking care of your community are valuable ways to feel safer in your neighborhood. Actions speak louder than words, and your attitudes towards marginalized and vulnerable people also set an example for your kids. So be mindful of the different people in your community and actively remind yourself to treat everyone with respect and care.

2. Good neighbors are helpful.

Helpful neighbors are always there to lend a hand. They stand ready to assist whenever someone requires support, whether it's borrowing an egg, keeping watch over their home, or collecting mail during a trip. These neighbors are people you can count on in various situations.

3. Good neighbors are trusting.

Trusting neighbors have their neighbors' best interests at heart. They treat their neighbor's home and family as their own. They also keep their word and follow through when asked to do something.

4. Good neighbors are respectful.

Respectful neighbors grasp the importance of boundaries, showing concern for their neighbor's time and personal space. They also acknowledge the preferences of those who value minimal interaction and prefer communication only when necessary. Being respectful involves maintaining tidiness, understanding limitations, and adhering to community rules.

5. Good neighbors are considerate of noise.

Noise is one of the most common complaints about neighbors in the U.S. Responsible neighbors, who are considerate of noise levels, play a pivotal role in fostering quality relationships within a community. Their willingness to adjust noise levels when a neighbor might be disturbed or uncomfortable demonstrates their accommodation. The most effective approach is to communicate proactively, informing neighbors in advance and working together to reach mutually agreeable solutions.

Tips for meeting new neighbors

Many people choose to move into an HOA because of the sense of community. As an existing resident, you have a part in extending the hand of friendship to those moving in and building a warm and inclusive community. Let's explore some tips on how to greet and connect with new neighbors, making them feel right at home from the very start.

1. Formally introduce yourself.

Creating a welcoming atmosphere establishes a channel for communication between you and your neighbor. Consider extending a friendly gesture, like a welcome gift such as a treat (be mindful of allergies) or a plant, within the first few days of their move-in. You could also encourage your community to start a welcome committee to facilitate this.

2. Keep introductions brief.

If you find that your new neighbor isn’t open to conversation, keep your meeting brief and to the point. This will prevent your neighbor from feeling uncomfortable or pressured to have a conversation. If they suggest it isn’t a good time to talk, wish them a quick and warm welcome. You can reassure them that you’re more than happy to come back another day or at a time that works best for them.

3. Let them do the talking.

Being a new neighbor comes with a lot to think about, especially when settling into a new home. When conversing with them, give them the space to share and respect their time—they might be swamped with tasks or not available for a chat. Let them know you’re there to answer any questions.

4. Exchange information.

Providing your neighbor with your information is a great way to keep in touch and start the foundation of a strong relationship. Give them your phone number or email address and any other contact information they may find helpful. For example, if you see that your neighbor has young children, you may share a list of contacts for a local babysitter or carpool.

5. Accompany them to HOA meetings.

HOA meetings are an excellent place to meet new people, voice opinions, and get involved in the community. Going alone can be intimidating, so offer to go to an HOA meeting with your neighbor. My neighbour consists of a family of 10 people. It is a joint family. The family consists of grandparents, two couples and four children. They are very well off, and both the brothers run the same family business. Three out of four children study in my school, whereas one is a toddler. The family is very helpful and is always cheerful. Their grandparents go for morning and evening walks with my grandparents. I play with their children every day in the evening. Many times we come back home together. Sometimes my mother picks us back from school, and sometimes their mother does the same. They always participate in our family functions as we do in theirs. They are really helpful neighbors and a blessing in our lives.

It is always good to have a good neighbour because they are the first people who you go to whenever you are too happy or sometimes in need of something. Our next-door neighbours are the Tanejas, whose family consists of grandparents, parents and two children. The grandparents are retired medical professionals, whereas the parents, i.e. the son and the daughter-in-law, are successful entrepreneurs. They are very kind and generous. They never show off their wealth. Whenever they are available, they call us for tea and coffee get-togethers, and whenever we get a chance, we invite them for snack parties and get-togethers.

I remember how difficult the times were when the pandemic hit the world in 2020. Their family helped us a lot with our medical needs. I was also suffering from symptoms of COVID, so they consoled my parents and helped them in the best possible way they could and prescribed me medications. Instead of creating chaos they helped me during quarantine, supplied me with necessary medicines and arranged an oxygen cylinder beforehand so that it could be used wherever it was required, as I had breathing problems for three days. I am thankful to God for blessing us with such wonderful neighbours.

A good neighbour is a found treasure. Neighbours are the ones who share our joys and sorrows, making our lives easier. When we have a good relationship with our neighbours, they are the first to stand by us in need. A good neighbour will always be ready to help you anytime and in any situation. It is always a boon to have a good neighbour.

Sharma stays to the left of our house. They are kind and sweet people. It took a little time to get connected to them at first, but with time we got attached to them. They are a small happy family of six members. Every single member of the family is very sweet. It's been almost seven years since we moved here. Since then, we have celebrated all the festivals together and enjoyed every occasion. The grandma next door always sends me homemade ladoos, and the kids, Sonu and Dolly are absolute sweethearts, and they love playing with our pets every time they come home. Sharma uncle is really a very good person. He is a professor at the University, and aunty is an excellent cook. She is a homemaker.

My mom and sharma aunty love to share their cooking recipes and delicious dishes. I really like her palak paneer and naan, and she never forgets to send it to me whenever she cooks it. They really help us every time we need them. Once my grandpa broke his spectacle, he was home alone; I was too small at the time to help him. He called Sharma uncle for help, and he immediately helped my grandfather to get it fixed. Their grandma next door is a very sweet and cheerful lady. I have hardly ever seen such an amazing personality at the age of 85. She, too, is a retired University professor. I always have a great time talking to her. She shares her personal life experiences from her college days. Also, she shares about the real-life struggles a person faces when they pass out of school and then college. She helps a lot in my mathematics lessons. She teaches many things to my mother, too, as if she is her own daughter. She taught my mother to make pickles and jams and also taught her preservation techniques. She treats my grandmother like her daughter, and most of the time, they are found talking and going for walks together. Both of them are very fond of Bhajans, and they go to the nearby temple with their friends.

We have been celebrating almost all the festivals together. We both invite each other to birthdays, anniversaries and on various other occasions. The best part about our neighbours is they are not at all jealous or intrusive about our matters. It isn't easy to get good neighbours today as some are really curious about your household, whereas some are not even interested in helping you with your needs. Anyone can buy a good house, but a good neighbour is priceless.

Should you be closer to your street-mates, or do good fences make good neighbors? Here's what the research says.

One day when I was about 9, my mom received a frantic phone call from our next door neighbor, Mrs. King, who wasn’t home at the time. She had been trying to reach the babysitter who was watching her daughter, and no one was picking up. Could my mom go over to the house to check on them? We ran over and found them — fortunately unharmed — locked in a closet by a burglar!

We didn’t socialize with the Kings regularly, though occasionally I played with their daughter. (She had an amazing wardrobe for her Barbies.) But we knew we could count on each other for everyday help and emergencies. Our interactions with our other next-door neighbors were less dramatic — I babysat their two little boys. My parents’ friends, the Lawrences, who hosted an annual holiday open house, were a few doors down. The rest we knew by sight to smile at and wave.

According to those who study human relationships, there are primarily two types of social ties — “ weak” ones , like, say, your loose connection to a local barista, your kids’ teacher, etc. and strong ones, like your closest friends and family. Dr. Marissa King, professor of organizational behavior at Yale School of Management and author of Social Chemistry: Decoding the Patterns of Human Behavior , s ays neighbors represent a particularly interesting category spanning the two different types of ties. “For about a third of people the neighbor relationship is very strong and for about a third of people it’s absent altogether,” she says. And yet neighbor relationships represent an essential part of our social fabric and can have an enormous impact on how happy we are living somewhere, she adds.

Positive relationships, she says, can increase mental health and feelings of wellbeing, while negative ones can decrease them.

Not surprisingly, after a year-plus at home in which many of us might have seen our neighbors more frequently than close pals, some people have indeed grown closer to them. “Generally, we tend to like people more the more we see them,” says Dr. King. “During the pandemic, we all turned more inward, relying on those closest to us socially and physically, and for some that included neighbors.” People come together with those in close proximity for a sense of community during periods of stress and to get through adversities, Dr. King continues. “COVID-19 is an adversity just like hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters.”

A more recent 2021 study —“ Your Neighborhood Before and After COVID ”— done by Buildworld in the United Kingdom, confirms Dr. King’s observations across the pond. Thirty-one percent of those surveyed said they had gotten to know their neighbors better since the pandemic began, with almost one in five saying that it made them feel better about those living near them. And more than one in three house dwellers (and 26 percent of those living in apartments) reported growing closer with their neighbors during this time.

Meet the Neighbors

Elise Biederman, who lives on a suburban New York cul de sac with about 10 other families, is one person who grew closer to her neighbors during the pandemic. And while they were friendly before, COVID-19 brought their relationships to a whole new level. “We bonded and are now connected more than ever,” she explains. “We went through uncharted territories together.” Everyone was outside a lot more with their kids and dogs and a neighborhood text chain sprang up to keep everyone connected, alerting members to grocery runs or inviting everyone outside for cocktails. Any minor annoyances over the years, Biederman says, have been far outweighed by the positives of living on such a close-knit street.

Lisa Ellis also lives in suburban New York and loves her neighbors. Her block — friendly before — also became even closer during the pandemic, via a text chain and socially distanced outdoor gatherings. One neighbor gave Ellis a key to their backyard fence saying, “Our pool is your pool.” Ellis says she feels blessed. “You don't get to choose your neighbors.”

Good Housekeeping ’s Parenting and Relationships Editor Marisa LaScala says that, in the first apartment building she moved into in Brooklyn, residents giving each other space was the norm, but a friendship found her anyway. She had never interacted much with the other residents until one of them emailed her and her now husband, who both freelanced writing movie reviews at the time. The neighbor, who enjoyed their reviews, recognized their names from their mailbox, emailed to say he thought they all should be friends. “It’s 14 years later and we still are,” LaScala says.

But not everyone has been so fortunate. One woman we spoke with in the Cleveland area lived in an apartment complex for many years, but that changed when new neighbors moved in upstairs. While she gave them a warm welcome, things quickly deteriorated when they routinely flouted leash laws, failed to pick up their dogs’ waste and cursed at her after she approached them about it. Another neighbor threw lit cigarettes off her balcony and onto hers. She eventually moved out, into a house. “We’ve had almost no dealings directly with any neighbors here,” she says, “which is fine by me.”

And when Sarah Ratliff moved into a new suburban California housing development, her next-door neighbor greeted her with several disparaging, racist remarks, not realizing Ratliff is Black. After a particularly tense interaction, Ratliff decided to keep her distance — but things didn’t get much better. The couple now lives more happily on an 18-acre farm in a remote community. “We decided that that was the last time we'd live next to people,” she explains. “We've never had problems with neighbors here since we have a ¼-mile distance between us. We know everybody and can call a neighbor a mile away for help.”

Jamie Beth Cohen has had great neighbors and awful ones. When she bought a townhouse in a community near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, she had a terrific next-door neighbor, especially important as their homes shared a front porch and lawn. But when the neighbor sold, a new neighbor who didn't care for the Cohens from the get-go moved in; she complained to Cohen that her husband had scowled at her. Things really hit the wall over a snow removal issue, when the neighbor screamed at her husband in front of other neighbors, calling him lazy. But when Cohen asked her, “Can we talk this through?” her response was, “I don’t need to talk to you.”

Fortunately, that neighbor eventually moved and was replaced by a couple with whom the Cohens are more compatible. “During the pandemic, we were able to sit outside socially distanced and chat on our front porch,” Cohen says. “They’re not our best friends but the fact that we have no bad blood between us is huge. And we help each other out.” The experience really drove home for her how much of an impact the negative situation had had on her own mental health. “I didn’t realize how traumatized I was until she moved,” she explains. “I would feel a tightness in my chest every time I pulled into my garage.”

And sometimes a situation that initially looks like it could be problematic turns out to be unexpectedly positive. “A neighbor who I initially found somewhat off-putting turned out to be amazing,” says Christina Adams of Laguna Beach, CA. A chain-smoker who often carried around a can of beer lived in an apartment building next to Adams’ new house. A professional chef, he began dropping off beautifully presented gourmet dishes for Adams and her husband. From there, the two bonded over food and cooking, sharing meals and talks and developing a special friendship. “We would never have crossed paths socially and I never would have had this wonderful opportunity to get to know him if he didn’t live next door,” she says.

Fostering Positive Neighbor Relationships

Developing a positive relationship with a neighbor is much easier than turning around a negative one, says Dr. King, so it pays to start off on the right foot. Understand that “small early investments, like smiling, waving or chatting, may make a big difference later on,” Dr. King says. But do try to gauge your neighborhood’s general “feel.” For some city neighbors, in particular, there may be an unwritten understanding that people living in such close proximity should respectfully leave each other alone.

But if your neighborhood feels like one in which interaction is welcome, consider “simple friendly actions — like walking over to introduce yourself and making eye contact. They can be quite powerful in making a good first impression,” adds Amber Trueblood, LMFT, a licensed marriage and family therapist. Welcome new neighbors by dropping off something small like some cookies or a list of your favorite local service people. Include your contact info.

If you’re the new neighbor, consider putting notes in nearby mailboxes introducing yourself, your kids and pets; share your contact info.

Invite your neighbors over for coffee or drinks. Even if the plans don’t materialize, it sets things off on the right track. But understand that some people want more privacy than others and may wish to be left alone — so do respect their wishes.

Be the neighbor you’d like to have. A note to your immediate neighbors giving them a heads up about the date of a big party, noting when the music will stop, is a considerate way to address any concerns about noise or traffic. If it’s a more casual event, consider inviting them to stop by.

And remember that no one likes when a visitor pops in or shows up unannounced. A quick text or phone call (“Want to walk the dogs together?” or “Can I borrow some eggs?”) maintains everyone’s privacy.

Repairing Negative Neighbor Relationships

Negative relationships tend to spiral from one negative interaction, says Dr. King. It may start with a barking dog — and pick up speed from there. So how can you stop the downward spiral?

Consider writing a note or asking if you can talk. “Someone has to have the humility and willingness to be the person to reach out in a difficult situation,” says Dr. King. “You don’t have to like each other, but you do have to be civil to one another.”

Neighbors are often taken for granted, Dr. King adds. It doesn’t take that much effort to turn around a problematic one but it requires being present. “Asking how someone is doing, offering help or listening to someone for two or three minutes when you bump into them may be all it takes.”

If someone seems rude or inconsiderate, it's very unlikely the behavior is directed at you, observes Trueblood. “Remind yourself that you have no idea what is going on inside someone else's home,” she says. “Take a breath, find some compassion and reach out with genuine care to see if you can resolve any misunderstandings or miscommunications.”

Try to focus on the positive. “Often, with difficult neighbors, we focus on the one or two things they do — or don't do — that drive us crazy,” says Trueblood. “Try to focus on any way they are good neighbors.”

Do respect each other’s boundaries and set your own, suggests Dr. King. “The absence of boundaries can be quite draining, as with a neighbor who asks for help all the time just because you are right there.”

If the situation is very negative and it takes up a disproportionate amount of your time and emotional energy — and you’ve tried to repair it — sometimes it’s best to let it go and focus on more positive ones, says Dr. King.

Getting along well with your neighbors makes your community a happier and safer place to live. The key to being a good neighbor is clear and consistent communication. Introduce yourself to your neighbors and then stay in contact over time. Try to be courteous by keeping your noise levels low and your yard well-maintained. If you want to go above and beyond, you could even participate in a neighborhood association or watch.

• Always be respectful and considerate of your neighbors. Keep your yard clean, follow any noise regulations, and put your trash out at the right time.

• Let your neighbors know that they can come talk with you if your pets are ever bothering them. For example, you might say, “If you ever hear my dog barking too much in the evenings, just let me know.”
• If you are walking in your neighborhood, practice common courtesy by picking up your pet’s poop, too.

• If you live in an apartment complex, the leasing company will usually provide you with a list of community rules, which usually includes a statement about noise.
• Go ahead and lower your noise level if you even think that you are being loud.
• Use what you know about your neighbors to determine what is appropriate, too. For example, if you know that the person next door works nights, then take that into account and adjust your noise levels accordingly.

Getting to Know Your Neighbors

• For a more informal approach, say hi to your neighbors when they (or you) are outside walking their dog or working on their lawn.
• When you first meet your neighbor you might say, “Hi! I’m Fred Thompson. I live 2 doors down from you and just wanted to come over and welcome you to the neighborhood.”
• You can also give you neighbor any friendly local tips, such as what time the garbage or mail carrier stops by.
• A welcoming gift can be anything from a friendly card to a basket filled with local foods or produce.

• For example, if your neighbor is going out of town, they might ask you to watch over their home. Then, when you take a trip, you can ask them to return the favor.

• For example, a community association could work together to put on a local street festival or even small dinners.

Communicating Openly with Your Neighbors

• For example, to give yourself a few days to think everything over, you might say, “I understand where you are coming from, but I need to consider how to fix it on my end. Can we talk about this over the weekend again?”

• This doesn’t necessarily apply if you feel as if the safety of you, your family, or the neighborhood is at stake. In those situations, you might want to reach out to local officials for assistance.
• Avoid gossiping about any issues with your neighbor to other neighbors or people in the community. This only creates additional problems.

• The same goes for any other large, loud gatherings, such as ongoing construction.

As humans , all of us live in a society are bound to a neighbourhood. It is an essential place which has a great impact on our lives. So much so that it does determine where we are in life and how we are doing. It is a fact that if we are not happy in our neighbourhood, we will not live peacefully. Through my neighborhood essay, I will explain about my neighbourhood and the reasons why I love it.

All About My Neighbourhood

I live in a great neighbourhood. It is wonderful because it offers us a lot of facilities. The green park near my house makes the area much more beautiful. Similarly, the swings in the park ensure the kids get to play cheerfully all day long.

Moreover, my neighbourhood also has many other bonuses. A grocery store adjacent to the park makes sure people get all their needs fulfilled without having to go far. All my neighbours buy their things from that grocery store only.

The owner also lives in the same area so he is very cordial with everyone. The grocery store saves everyone a long trip to the market and also their time. The park in my neighbourhood remains clean at all times.

The maintenance team makes sure they clean and sanitize it from time to time. It allows my neighbours to sit and relax in the evenings and take walks in the morning. The clean and fresh air gives everyone a great experience.

Why I Love My Neighbourhood

Apart from the top-notch facilities available in my neighbourhood, we also have amazing neighbours who make our lives better. A good neighbourhood is not made of facilities only but good people as well.

I got lucky in this case because my neighbours are very sweet. They help in maintaining the peace of the area so everyone lives in harmony. I have seen very often that if there is an emergency at anyone’s place, everyone rushes to help.

Similarly, we also organize events from time to time so that the whole neighbourhood gathers and enjoy themselves. I have a lot of friends in my neighbourhood with whom I play.

Most of them are my age so we meet every evening to cycle together and play on swings. We also go to each other’s birthday parties and sing and dance. The most favourite thing about my neighbourhood is definitely the residents.

I always notice how we never let any poor person go back empty-handed. My neighbourhood also organizes a donation drive every year. In this, each family donates clothes, toys and other useful commodities for the needy.

Thus, we all live together as a large family. Even though we live in different houses, our hearts are bounded by the same love and respect for each other.

What Makes a Neighborhood Great?

Through the years PPS has learned a number of key lessons about what sets apart a great neighborhood from a mediocre one, which are distilled into The Great Neighborhood Book . The key is having a number of good places within the neighborhood where people can go to relax, have fun, and see one another. These are the basic principles of what we call Placemaking, which are outlined below:

• Good places promote sociability These are the spots where you run into people you know, where you take friends and family when you want to show them the neighborhood. These places become the heart and soul of the neighborhood because they offer people many different reasons to go there.
• Good places have lots of things to do The places people love most are the ones where they can pursue a variety of activities. Without opportunities to do something more than sit and look around, the experience you have in that place is "thin" -- there is nothing to keep you there for any length of time.
• Good places are comfortable and attractive They beckon you to come visit. Flowers, comfortable benches with a nice view, and attractive lighting all make you feel this is a place you want to come to often. In contrast, a place that lacks these kind of amenities often feels unwelcoming and a bit threatening. It may actually be unsafe or just feel unsafe, but either way no one wants to be there.
• Good places are accessible These places are clearly identifiable from a distance, easy to enter when you get closer, and it is simple to understand how you use them. A space that is not accessible will be end up empty, forlorn and often dilapidated.
• Good places capitalize on the Power of 10 Think of the 10 most important places in your neighborhood. It could be the main shopping street, a park, playground, an interesting shop, a library, post office etc. Zoom in and think about one of these places and try to write down ten fun or useful things you can do there. For example at the post office, you can mail a letter or pick up your mail. At post offices which are truly good places, you can catch up on the community gossip, scan a bulletin board full of local happenings, and sit outside on a bench and open your mail. That makes it easy to chat with neighbors or just peoplewatch. If there is a coffee shop or vending cart nearby, you can even get a drink and sit and enjoy the passing scene. The Power of 10 is the simple but important idea that the more things there are to do in a place, the more beloved and central that place will become in your neighborhood.
• Good places are inspired by the people who live there The big question is, of course, how do you begin to create the good places that every neighborhood craves? What process can you use to build spots where people want to hang out? Long experience has shown us that bottom-up rather than top-down strategies to create or revitalize public spaces work best. This approach is based on the simple idea that the people who live in a neighborhood are the world's experts on that particular place. Any project to improve things should be guided by the community's wisdom, not the dictates of professional disciplines. This is the most important lesson about making great neighborhoods we have learned in 30 years of work.

Introduction

I felt quite lonely when we shifted here initially. However, I soon met Meera, my new neighbour. I was overjoyed to know that she was the same age as me. We were both eight at that time. Our Bond with our New Neighbour

Just like I became friends with Meera, my mother got along well with her mother. Meera’s mother is a housewife. My mother and she often have evening tea together. We look forward to such days as it allows us to play at each other’s place. We get a chance to play with different toys and games.

On other days, we go together to the park. We play different outdoor games, take swings and enjoy a lot. We also joined the same summer camp during our last vacation. My experiences with my neighbours.

We live in a society. There are eight families on each floor. There are several floors and many towers in society. This makes it a big neighbourhood. The mother of one of my neighbourhood friends accompanies us as we go for such activities.

We exchange gifts with our neighbours on the occasion of Diwali and New Year. We also have lunch or dinner together to celebrate these occasions.

Some Bad Experiences with My Neighbours

While some of our neighbours are really sweet and stand by us in our good and bad times, unfortunately, we also have some troublesome neighbours. We have had our share of bad experiences when it comes to neighbours. Three girls have rented an apartment on our floor. They often play loud music during the late evening hours. This disrupts our sleep. We also have a hard time studying during this time.

We have requested them to keep the volume low many times. But it seems like they do not bother about others. Another one of our neighbours is quite weird. It is a family of four – two kids and their parents. We have tried to approach them and be friends with them. However, it seems like their parents want them to maintain distance from us. They often behave rudely and do not bond well with anyone on the floor.

It is great to have good neighbours. However, not everyone has this privilege. I am glad to have some really nice people in my neighbourhood.

Many times when my parents went shopping, they left us at Mrs. Shukla’s place. She took very good care of us. Her grandchildren visited her during the summer vacations. We looked forward to that time as we got along really well with those kids. We often invited them to our place and played all day long. Many times, we also went to their place and it was great fun.

The Punjabi Family in Our Neighbourhood

When I was eight years old, we shifted to Chandigarh. It is a beautiful city. It is very well planned with lovely houses and surroundings. We rented an apartment in a good locality. The atmosphere of the place was quite pleasing and so were our neighbours. Our next door neighbours were a Punjabi family. It was a joint family. There were a total of seven members in the family. Their daughter was almost the same age as mine and I got along really well with her. She often came over to our place during the evening and we played for hours.

Sometimes, we went together to the park to take swings and play badminton. She had two brothers who were older than my brother but very friendly. They always called my brother to play cricket with them. My brother looked forward to playing with them. My mother also became very good friends with their mother. They both went shopping together. They often exchanged recipes and chatted for hours. The two years we spent in Chandigarh were really fun. It would not be wrong to say that the Punjabi family living in our neighbourhood made it even more fun.

The Gujrati Couple

I also cherish the one year we spent in Indore. I was eleven years old when we shifted to this city. It was quite different from the cities I had lived in earlier. A Gujarati couple lived in our neighbourhood. They had bought an apartment close to ours just a few days before we shifted.

So, even they were busy unpacking and decorating their place at the time we shifted. The place was as new to them as it was for us. So, the lady often went out to explore the nearby places with my mother. She cooked delicious curries and often gave us some portion. I loved her warm and friendly nature. Her husband was also very polite and helpful.

Good neighbours enrich our childhood experiences. I am glad we have had some really nice ones. I hope we continue to meet such beautiful and helpful people in the future as well.

Being a good neighbour is essential when living in a community. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to do things for them like running errands or lending them a pint of milk. It’s more important to show respect for your neighbours and let them know in advance if you ’ re planning something which could disrupt their peace and quiet. Are you a noisy neighbour ?

Noise from neighbours is a common source of disturbance. The most frequent complaints are about barking dogs, loud music/TV, shouting, banging doors and DIY activities. Remember that no house or flat is totally soundproof. We must all live within the constraints of our individual properties. Garages and gardens tend to offer minimal sound insulation so these can have a greater effect on your neighbours.

Always consider your neighbours, be courteous and let them know if you are planning a party or carrying out DIY. Let them know when it's likely to finish too. A Summary and Analysis of Robert Frost’s ‘Mending Wall’

‘Mending Wall’ is a 1914 poem by the American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963). Although it’s one of his most popular, it is also one of his most widely misunderstood – and, like another of his widely anthologised poems, ‘The Road Not Taken’, its most famous lines are often misinterpreted.

Before we address these issues of interpretation and analysis, it might be worth reading ‘Mending Wall’ here .

‘Mending Wall’: summary

To summarise: ‘Mending Wall’ is a poem about two neighbours coming together each spring to mend the wall that separates their two properties.

This wall is made of stones piled on top of each other, and the winter weather has ravaged the wall and left it needing repairs, because there are gaps in the wall between stones.

Hunters coming past have also knocked holes in the wall. The speaker of the poem (this poem is a lyric, expressing the personal thoughts and feelings of the poem’s speaker, although whether the speaker and Frost are one and the same is difficult to say; there’s almost certainly some overlap here, though) approaches the chore of mending the wall as a sort of game.

While he and his neighbour fix the wall, it becomes clear that the speaker isn’t convinced by the need for a fence dividing their two properties. When he asks his neighbour what the purposes of the dividing wall is, all his neighbour can do is parrot an old piece of wisdom his father used to say: ‘Good fences make good neighbours.’

‘Mending Wall’: analysis

We might interpret this piece of family wisdom as meaning: having clear boundaries between ourselves and others leads to healthy relationships between neighbours because they won’t fall out over petty territorial disputes or ‘invading each other’s space’.

For instance, we may like our neighbours, but we don’t want to wake up and draw the curtains to find them dancing naked on our front lawn. There are limits . Respecting each other’s boundaries helps to keep things civil and amicable. However, does this mean that Frost himself approves of such a notion?

‘Mending Wall’ is frequently misinterpreted, as Frost himself observed in 1962, shortly before his death. ‘People are frequently misunderstanding it or misinterpreting it.’ But he went on to remark, ‘The secret of what it means I keep.’ Which, let’s face it, doesn’t exactly clear up the matter.

However, we can analyse ‘Mending Wall’ as a poem contrasting two approaches to life and human relationships: the approach embodied by Frost himself in the poem (or by the speaker of his poem, at least), and the approach represented by his neighbour. It is Frost’s neighbour, rather than Frost himself (or Frost’s speaker), who insists: ‘Good fences make good neighbours.’

‘Good fences make good neighbours’ has become like another of Frost’s sentiments: ‘Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, / I took the one less travelled by.’ This statement, from ‘The Road Not Taken’, is often misinterpreted because readers assume Frost is proudly asserting his individualism, whereas in fact, as we’ve discussed here , the lines are filled with regret over ‘what might have been’.

‘Good fences make good neighbours’ is actually more straightforward: people misinterpret the meaning of this line because they misattribute the statement to Frost himself, rather than to the neighbour with whom he (or his speaker) disagrees. As the first line of the poem has it, ‘Something there is that doesn’t love a wall’: this, spoken by Frost or by his poem’s speaker, clearly indicates that Frost does not agree with the view that ‘good fences make [for] good neighbours’.

It is also worth noting that this line, ‘Good fences make good neighbours’, did not originate with Frost: it is first found in the  Western Christian Advocate  (13 June 1834), as noted in  The Yale Book of Quotations .

‘Mending Wall’: form

‘Mending Wall’ is written in blank verse , which is unrhymed iambic pentameter . Given the closeness of iambic pentameter to ordinary human speech patterns in the English language, and the more natural tone which the lack of rhyme helps to create, this is a particularly pertinent choice of verse form for a poem about two neighbours chatting (although before we overinterpret the significance of the blank verse for ‘Mending Wall’, it’s worth mentioning that Frost uses this verse form in many of his poems).

However, it’s worth stopping to consider the conversational nature of the speaker’s account of mending the wall, and the significance of the two men’s utterances in ‘Mending Wall’. Whereas the speaker of the poem is explorative, playful, ironic, and even tongue-in-cheek (for instance, pretending that they have to cast a spell to keep some stones in place), his neighbour can only repeat the same mantra whenever the speaker asks him what the purpose of the wall is: ‘Good fences make good neighbours.’

This is taken as sufficient. In other words, it’s as if the neighbour is putting up a metaphorical ‘wall’ between him and his neighbour, refusing to share in his more relaxed and puckish attitude towards the question of the wall.

For the neighbour, the hand-me-down proverb from his father is enough wisdom for him to live by: it’s always been said, as far as he’s concerned, that ‘good fences make good neighbours’, so who is he to question such a notion? By contrast, Frost’s speaker can’t resist questioning or probing the matter.

In this connection, Frost’s line, ‘We keep the wall between us as we go’ can be taken as double-edged: physically they keep to their own sides of the wall, respecting the physical boundaries between their homes, but there’s also a figurative suggestion of putting up social boundaries between them and not being entirely honest or open.

Yet it’s also worth acknowledging, as a final point of analysis, that through ‘mending wall’ so as to retain it, the speaker and his neighbour also come together: the wall brings them together as they ‘meet’ in order to mend it, but they only come together in order to reinforce the division between them.

If Frost were alive and well today and cleared up the issue, would we be happy or sad? Isn’t the ambiguity that makes it interesting?

“Mending Wall” is, to my mind, one of Frost’s two greatest works (the other being “Death of the Hired Man”). And, while you are correct that the poem is oft misinterpreted, I think that part of Frost’s genius in it has been that we cannot get completely comfortable with either of the two clearest (and opposing) potential interpretations. Yes, the speaker disagrees with the statement about good neighbors and presumably intends for us to disagree with it as well. And yet Frost gives his neighbor the last word. Also, it is the speaker who always takes the effort to go to the neighbor and remind him that it’s time to mend the wall, not the other way round. If he didn’t, would the neighbor simply forget? Would the pines and the apple orchard naturally border each other in peace? We don’t know. Because the speaker who ostensibly disagrees with the neighbor’s statement continues to perpetuate its practice.

Pardon the strangeness in the link. I changed my mind about which Frost poem to record at the eleventh hour.

That’s great – I think you’re right, too. There’s probably a tension between the two neighbours’ views and the best outlook is to be found somewhere between them. Having lived with both nice neighbours on good terms and not-so-nice neighbours on less-than-good terms, it’s important to maintain a sense of privacy and distance – as long as it isn’t too rigidly enforced!

I’m not sure there’s any hidden meaning Frost is keeping here. Rather, as with “Road Not Taken,” it’s simply that the ideas and feelings of the speaker are more complex than what a superficial reading of an isolated line of the poem would suggest. Here, that complexity seems to be a divide in how the speaker feels about the wall. He questions it and sees no need for it, and yet he also actively engages in rebuilding the wall with his neighbor every spring — and never raises any of his questions out loud to the neighbor (and this is so, in part, because as you note, there is a figurative social boundary between them). So, does the speaker not want the wall or does he want the wall? The poem contains evidence that he feels both ways about it. And the poem thus raises another complexity: is the wall senseless and unnecessary, or is it purposeful and good? The ominous references to the neighbor at the end of the poem (“he moves in darkness,” “old-stone savage armed”) seem to suggest that it’s probably a good thing they are separated.

Essay on Neighbours

A good neighbour is a great blessing. He is more than relative to us. Our relatives, living far off, may not be in a position to help us in our troubles and sorrows, but a good neighbour is ever ready to help us when we face misfortunes.

He lives next door. He can easily help us whenever we may need his help. I have one such ideal neighbour He is a kind-hearted and sympathetic fellow. Though older in age, he is the merriest and most suitable for company.

He is never found wanting whenever I need his advice or help. He is ever ready to sacrifice his rest or comfort for my sake. His mature experience is always there to guide me in this world and save me from pitfalls.

He is the most unselfish and self-sacrificing man I have ever come across. He has almost become a member of our family from whom I conceal nothing. I discuss all my plans and schemes with him and he gives me his mature advice.

His mature advice is very valuable for me not only in theory but also in practice He is highly considerate and extremely accommodating. He never says an unkind word. He is always full of sympathy, love and affection for me.

He participates in all my joys and sorrows. He is a great prop to me in this dark and dreary life. He is a pillar of strength to me in the midst of storms and tempests of my life. He has been of great help to me on many an occasion.

Once it so happened that all of a sudden at midnight I fell seriously ill. I began to vomit and my heart began to sink. He at once came running and sat by my bedside the whole night.

He arranged for medical aid at that odd hour. For full seven days and nights, he nursed me with his own hands. I can never forget his sympathy, kindness and service.

How can I repay such a kindly neighbour? May God bless him!

Essay on Good Fences Make Good Neighbours

A fence is a boundary created in order to maintain privacy. The neighbours can be better if there are boundaries. Neighbours could maintain peace by continuing to keep a fence and lack of which can make one nonchalant about the space and privacy of their neighbour next door resulting in enmity.

Why fence is a must

A fence eliminates any chance of trespassing into a zone which belongs to you. This is also true for relationships, neighbouring countries, colleagues or everything else in life.

One should not build stone making it impossible to communicate but rather than building a low fence in order to maintain a distance. Some of the famous walls in include the Great Wall of China, Berlin wall and the walls separating America and Mexico also wall that separate Israelis from Palestinians. Countries across the world are trying to ensure that robust boundary so that others do not cross the borders.

A classic example for fences or boundaries in political terms is that of our country India’s, where we have tried to make good boundaries with our landlocked neighbours in order to avoid border disputes. There are many borders and out of those some of them are Wagah border, Siachen glacier, Arunachal Pradesh, etc.

When we talk about India and its immediate neighbours in the past, weak fences have resulted in infiltration from either side ultimately distressing truce and goodwill between the countries and leading to conflicts as well as disharmony. Even then the countries have reduced examples of peripheral disturbance.

There is also a school of thought where some kind of boundary results in greater longing as well as maintains harmony amongst people. This is very much evident by how people meet after a few days of staying apart.

Despite seeming friendly towards each other, a barrier assures division. Too much of anything is bad in this case excessive friendliness leads to the meddling of neighbours into the lives of people living next door.

In recent times, people have been keeping a distance from others in order to ensure that they do get hurt by any sentiments or words. Fence or boundaries are vital for just maintaining privacy but also maintaining harmony and peace both at home as well as outside.

Disadvantages of creating a fence

In some cases, the creation of a boundary can create isolation. In yesteryear, penetrable railings made it easier for neighbours to come home and casually converse about mundane things. Nonetheless, times have been changed and people are very often are not aware of who resides even in their immediate community, thanks to the boundaries. When a wall is created it ends with frictions over its need in the long term as people have a difference of opinions.

For citizens of one country who share a cordial relationship with their neighbours, it can become difficult to cross borders as the number of permissions required for the same can be immense. When it comes to relationship especially personal ones, it takes years to build walls before even talking to the person.

Eventually, a word like bosom friends or true friends will be conflicting word for people as they would have already created an obstruction in their relationships much before. A man is known to be sociable animal and by building such confines it removes social interaction. This is terrible as there is a fast world out there and most people tend to move away from each other at a faster pace despite having all means of communication.

Civilisations have progressed because of various social, cultural and technological reasons. If there is no social interaction and intermingling would take a back seat leading to the death of free exchange of ideas and growth among human beings. This can have a deeper impact on human beings.

Thus this age-old belief of good fences making good neighbours holds true even in the modern age. But like everything, even the boundaries should not become restrictions for people to communicate with each other. Robert Frost, the author of the poem, may have had felt that removing barriers for ensuring hassle-free communication and interaction between was ideal but for ensuring hassle-free communication and interaction between was ideal but he could not see the multifaceted parts of the creation of fences-positives and negatives.

Obstacles must be removed and be placed adequately in order to assure that quietness is not affected, so long as boundaries are not invaded and there is complete devotion in various relationships at all times. A fence is nothing but a way to keep one’s privacy and letting any intruders to trespass onto the land. The famous saying simply stresses upon the need for privacy between neighbours so that no ill things can occur against your wishes.

In a life where exploring new places is everything, being a good acquaintance is necessary. It doesn’t come with the tag of being best friends. It just means living peacefully in a neighbourhood, renting a home or with someone.

A good neighbour should know how to behave well with their neighbours. For instance, a simple gesture such as a “hello” or good morning is all one needs to make their neighbours happy and cheer up from their usual morning routines. So being a good neighbour is not that difficult at all. It’s true that everyone gets along well with each other. But by just being friendly and greeting you’re considerate and cooperative.

These three things are what makes a person a good neighbour. But there is one thing no matter how good a neighbour is there is always both threat and a sense of security about their privacy. Obviously, it does not occur purposely but there is always a scope for something good or bad.

A fence made in good belief between the assets doesn’t obstruct the relationship that you have with your neighbours. It just safeguards your family’s interest and one’s space. There should always be a boundary in a relationship that would not be crossed at any cost. It shouldn’t be a huge fence, blocking all the interactions with neighbours. But a big fence is enough to keep neighbours at a distance.

Not everyone has the knowledge of living in a typical neighbourhood. Some stay mingled with neighbours that they even know what’s cooking in their house and some stay so far that they cannot even come whenever they feel like. If we think like that then we will realise that we are creating various different walls with our neighbours that that will keep us attached for a lifetime. But remember to steer clear of too much friendliness is not good.

Nobody likes an interference of a third person in their private lives if the neighbours are given too much freedom then it may lead to unpleasant incidents. Thus the division between neighbours is a way to create a safe and secure feeling at the same time they may well create isolation amongst each other. So always be friendly with others when needed but at the same time keep a notable distance away from them. As the saying goes by “be a good neighbour but at the same time maintain a distance from them”.

The funny thing about the saying is that the very act of rebuilding the fence together every year is what brings these neighbours together. It’s why they are spending time together; it’s why they are talking. By making the fence “good” again, by fixing the gaps and the places where it’s crumbling away, these two men are actually better neighbours.

When the neighbours are occupied and doing something productive rather than just ignoring each other they become good understanding neighbours. Basically, when you say fences it means establishing boundaries between you and your neighbour that helps both to act and respect each other’s privacy. For instance, you and your neighbours next door need to know for certain when exactly your neighbour’s kids come to play on your trampoline and makes lots of noise they, then both neighbours. This will help the neighbours experience more peace with less conflict. Thus boundaries can make for a good relationship between neighbours.

A good neighbour is a work in progress. When we define neighbours as that living in residential proximity to one another, but also it is contingency, individuality and local norms “ensure that neighbours relations” and expectations are variable.

According the poem “Mending a wall” which is a favourite among literary lovers who enjoy discussing its true meaning. Some believe that the narrator of the poem dislikes the wall which divides one neighbour from the other. While others think the poem tells the story of a well-established relationship and ritual between two friends and neighbours.

The above-given proverb contains the general observations and experiences of humankind, including life’s multiple contradictions. Benjamin Franklin leading English author once said love and respect your neighbour but at the same time guard yourself from trespassing.

A fence is necessary to keep the privacy of any land. It keeps out the intruders who may otherwise encroach upon the land. It is a good thing even for neighbouring houses. The neighbours might be friendly towards each other. But there is always the chance of a quarrel between them.

Students are led through a series of activities to create profiles for imaginary characters who live in the same neighbourhood. The lesson then brings these characters together at a neighbourhood party, where students can practice asking and answering simple questions about work, family, hobbies and so on.

As well as developing spoken fluency, there are opportunities to expand vocabulary (personality adjectives) and some useful questions for making small talk.

Neighborly Love: Building Meaningful Connections With Those Next Door

Loving your neighbor is a common Christian concept, but living this out in today’s world of fenced yards and garages that enter directly into homes means many people can live their lives without ever having to interact with their neighbors.

While many of us may use traditional techniques, such as welcoming neighbors over for meals, starting a neighborhood prayer or study group or even neighborhood yard cleanups, there are other unique ways to serve and connect with those God has placed in our community.

Fostering relationships with neighbors allows for the gospel to be shared through simple and casual experiences. Jesus often shared love through simple acts such as conversation, food, helping the sick, spending time with kids and attending local celebrations.

With Jesus as our guide, here are some unique ways to reflect Christ’s love in your community.

Communicate

Have you ever seen the 1990s show Home Improvement?

In that show, the neighbor’s eyes and hat above the shared fence were all that was shown of him, yet he experienced a deep connection with his neighbors because they talked. Family issues, funny stories, wisdom and major life events were shared over that fence.

Take the time to talk to your neighbor when they walk past with a dog or roll their trash can in.

Intentionally spend time in your front yard or areas where your paths might cross in order to open this avenue for connection. Resist the temptation to smile and wave simply. Walk over to them when saying hello. Ask questions and answer theirs.

Show them that you can be a listening ear and let them get to know you. Once the walls of formality have been broken down, opportunities abound.

Be aware of your neighbor’s needs.

We lived next door to a 90-year-old woman at one point. There were times when my husband mowed her lawn, when I carried in her groceries and when my children rolled in her cans.

Maybe you see your neighbor’s weeds growing long. Offer to lend them your weed wacker. Are they trying to wash windows without a ladder? Bring yours over. Would a wheelbarrow or shovel help them?

My husband always offered car help if he saw someone with a hood up since that is his area of expertise.

Look for opportunities to give what you have.

Another aspect of sharing is to ask your neighbors for help. That same 90-year-old neighbor lent me foil, salt, butter, saran wrap and more over the years, as well as mending some of my girls’ clothes when I asked her about it after learning she could sew.

If you have neighbors with kids, pass down your children’s outgrown bikes, books or toys.

Sharing time can also help. I made sure the working moms in the neighborhood knew that their kids could come to my house after school, and a few times, when something came up, they did!

Sharing can break down barriers and emulate the generosity of Jesus.

Create a space in your neighborhood that physically welcomes others in. We built a “ Little Free Library ” at our old house and filled it with excellent books. Neighbors, from college kids to toddlers, would use the library. We even had a family traveling in an RV stop by when they saw it registered online.

That book box allowed us to meet many people.

We were also able to fill it with Bibles and books such as The Case for Christ and The Jesus Storybook Bible .

During the pandemic, we added a large sign to our front yard that said, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” ( Psalm 46:1 ). We lived right near an elementary school, and countless parents walked and drove past our home daily.

We were surprised at how many people stopped to talk about our sign!

How can you make your physical spaces welcoming for others? Is there a fruit tree or flower bed out front where you can place a “pick me” sign? Could you put a bench out front for people walking by to rest? Scripture painted on rocks in the yard?

Consider your neighborhood and what would bless others: A water station on a hot day, small free bouquets in spring, extra garden produce, sidewalk chalk for neighborhood kids or a tree with encouraging messages tied to the limbs.

What starts in the front yard may someday extend to your backyard or inside your home as your intimacy with your neighbors increases.

People are accustomed to isolating living while in a neighborhood, and little treats or gestures of love can make a big impact.

Holidays often provide a good jumping-off point for this. My children have delivered May Day baskets with a poem or scripture attached, delivered valentines to doorsteps, brought muffins on Santa Lucia Day, and so much more.

Cookies, bouquets, and cards were regular doorstep surprises for our neighbors, and when we moved, we found out that one older couple had saved every note our kids had delivered over the years.

One time, I passed a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies over to the partying college kids who lived behind us. They were elated.

These simple gestures showed our neighbors that we were thinking of them and that they mattered to us. It revealed to them that we were not only concerned about our affairs.

Living Out Love

One another should always move beyond our own families and church communities and into the world around us. What we do in our own homes and with our close friends can be extended to the people that God has placed us in proximity.

As our neighbors watch us piling in the car, Bibles in hand each Sunday, they are also thinking about how we live every other day of the week.

The way we interact with them should be an outward reflection of all that we are learning inwardly on those Sundays. God has told us that “ whatever we do ” can be for his glory. Therefore, how we mow our lawn, walk up our front walk, talk to the lady walking her dog, help the child who fell on their bike, or decorate our front porch can speak of Christ’s love.

15 Things Every Good Neighbor Does

Being on good terms with your neighbors can come in seriously handy — like when you're out of sugar, but need to make cookies for the bake sale at your kid's school tomorrow. Not sure how to put your best foot forward? Here's how to become the best neighbor on the block.

1) Deliver a welcome basket.

Has a new family moved to the neighborhood? Drop off a basket filled treats, cooking ingredients, a bottle of wine, important phone numbers, and any other little trinkets they might need for their new home.

2) Start a school carpool.

If another family on your street has kids that attend the same school as yours, set up a carpool routine that will help you and your neighbor out.

3) Help carry in groceries.

If you see your neighbor pull up with a car full of groceries, spend five minutes helping them unload. This gesture will go a long way. Then give them your insider knowledge on the cheapest day to go grocery shopping to earn even more brownie points.

4) Plan a neighborhood event.

Bring the whole neighborhood together and throw a block party to celebrate an upcoming holiday, a month of birthdays , or simply use it as an excuse get to know one another.

5) Clean up the sidewalks.

Take your whole family out on a Sunday afternoon with a few trash bags and clean up your block. Your entire neighborhood will notice the difference, and they might even chip in. Make sure to bring more than one bag, so you can recycle too.

6) Host a game night.

Round up a few of the adults for an evening of fun — and bonding! Have everyone BYOB and bring their own game . You might learn a few new games as a result.

7) Plant a community garden.

Gather everyone together to plant a mix of trees, vegetables, and herbs. Then have everyone pitch in to maintain and nurture your shared garden throughout the year. When your veggies are ready to pick, have a neighborhood feast.

8) Help with holiday lights.

Nothing is more satisfying than a neighborhood full of colorful lights come the holidays. But the worst part? Actually hanging them. Help your neighbor out by handing them lights while they're on their roof or lend a hand to keep their ladder steady.

9) Watch their house.

If your next-door neighbors are going out of town, offer to watch over their house by watering their plants , feeding their pets, and keeping an eye on things while they're away. It doesn't take much time and they'll probably offer to do the same for you.

10) Start a neighborhood watch program.

Make your neighborhood a safe place for everyone by starting a neighborhood watch program. This way, when someone sees something, they'll know who to go to if they want to say something.

11) Tend to their yard.

It's not only courteous to make sure your lawn is in tip-top-shape , but if you're out mowing your front yard, offer to do the same for the family next door. They'll appreciate the hour of chores you just took off their to-do list.

12) Sign for their packages.

When your neighbor isn't home, don't be afraid to sign for their packages. Just leave a note on their door letting them know you're keeping it in your home for safekeeping.

13) Shovel their walkway.

Everyone knows that driving in the winter is the worst . While you're out clearing your walkway, pop next door and do the same for your neighbor. They'll come out in the morning for work happy not to slip on their way to their car.

14) Take their dog for a stroll.

Even if you don't have a dog, don't be afraid to ask your neighbors if you can take theirs for a walk in the morning or afternoon. Your neighbor and their pups will appreciate the gesture and you'll have fun too.

15) Give their car a rinse.

No one likes a dirty car. So the next time you notice dust drawings on your neighbors' car (sigh, kids), ask them if you can help them out by giving their wheels a soak while you're tackling your own.

The  Missoula Organization of REALTORS® Good Neighbor Award recognizes our REALTOR® members who make a  positive impact in their community and gifts the organization through which they volunteer  time and talents.

• Nominees must be a REALTOR® member of the Missoula Organization of REALTORS® (MOR).
• Nominees should have contributed to a program that improves the livability of our local community. Those activities aren’t limited to real estate or housing issues, and may include such things as crime prevention, youth mentoring, and homelessness prevention.
• Nominees will be judged on level of personal contribution, especially volunteer (unpaid) hours, though contributions of money and other resources will be considered as well.
• Some portion of the nominee’s work must have taken place within the 12 months prior to the nomination deadline, which is August 1st, 2024.
• This award is intended to recognize individuals, not associations or companies. If an individual within your association or company can be singled out as instrumental to the success of a group effort, he or she is eligible. If the achievements of two people (such as a married couple or co-founders of an organization) cannot be separated, they can enter as a pair and their entry will be considered as one.
