Table of Contents
U Turn Story
An investigative journalist, Rachana (Samantha), researches the traffic violators who move the concrete blocks on the divider of the RK Puram flyover to take a shortcut. She tries to contact the first person on the list and finds out that he has committed suicide. As the police investigate the case, she learns that everyone on her list has committed suicide. She becomes the prime suspect in a case she does not know. How she proved her innocence and what is the reason behind the suicides form the crux of the story.
Story Analysis
U Turn is a faithful remake of the Kannada original. The original version was made within a limited budget and this time the film is technically far superior to the original. Pawan Kumar earlier said in an interview that this is an improved script and but the film doesn’t have many changes. Some changes were made keeping the commercial aspects of the film in mind. The first half is intense and gripping. The film establishes characters and then slowly moves into the thriller elements immersing the audience in the plot. The second half has multiple conflicts and the suspense raises towards the climax. The love story is a subplot and doesn’t have much importance in the story. The entire story revolves around Samantha and all other characters have limited scope.
Performances
This year has been successful for Samantha. She is growing as an actress film after film. She has done bubbly girl roles for the majority of her initial career depending mostly on glamour. But nowadays she is selecting scripts wisely to prove herself. Samantha is impressive in her role. Aadhi Pinisetty has a serious but one-dimensional role. He is convincing as an honest police officer. Rahul Ravindran doesn’t have any scope for acting and his role is just padding to the film. Bhoomika appears in a crucial role and she is superb in her role.
Technical Analysis
The script has not been changed much from the original version. The production values are great. The cinematography is great and the visuals are rich. The camera work is better than the original version. The background score elevated the mood and intensity. The choreography for the Karma song has already received huge applause from the audience. The editing is slick and perfect. The film translates from scene to scene without any drag. The direction is top-notch and with a sufficient budget, Pawan Kumar is capable of making commercial films too.
U-Turn is a faithful remake that sticks to the original story. The film is well made and is an intense thriller. But as the entire film relies on the climax, it is a one-time watch.

Samantha is on a success streak with multiple hits to her name. The star heroine is pinning high hopes on U-Turn which is hitting the marquee today. Scroll down to check whether the movie manages to live up to the expectations or not.
Rachana(Samantha) is a news reporter who is trying to figure out the reason behind the common public’s lack of civic sense. She collects details about people who neglect traffic rules and de-arrange the dividers on the RK Puram flyover to take a U-Turn and cut-short their journey.
In this process, Rachana gets involved in a deep mess as a series of unexplained incidents lay multiple hurdles to her personal life. A police inspector named Nayak(Aadhi Pininsetty) gets himself involved in the case and start an investigation with help from Rachana. What are these unexplained incidents? How does her personal life gets affected by these mysteries? Can Rachana and Nayak solve the case? The answers to these questions form the core plot of the movie.
Plus Points:
Samantha shines right from the word go in what-could-be the most challenging role in her career. Her intense performance in a few crunch episodes add a whole lot of depth to the movie and rake up the excitement factor. She looks really good in her makeover and her new look suits her quite well.
Aadhi Pinisetty is another big asset to the movie as his mannerisms and physique as a police officer are perfect. The proven actor came up with a matured performance and keeps things simple. Also, Rahul Ravindran is really good in his role and the episodes featuring him and Samantha are very realistic and believable. Bhumika gets a crisp role and delivered what was needed of her.
The core plot of the movie is intriguing and offers a new experience to the viewers. The interval block packs a solid punch and ups the ante with a key twist in the tale. The entire setup looks near-to-life and that brings an authentic vibe to the movie.
Minus points:
The initial stages of the movie have been slightly dragged and so are the post-interval episodes. However, realistic performances from the lead cast overpower these flaws.
Samantha’s dubbing looks a bit patchy in a particular scene in the first half but she did reasonably well for most parts considering the complexities of her role.
The climax sequences are a bit confusing as fictional horror is infused with realistic drama. A more detailed and convincing explanation could have worked wonders for the movie. The movie runs at its own pace and that may not go well with the B and C centers
Technical aspects:
The production values for this mid-range movies are sleek. Every frame looks authentic and the production design deserves a special mention here. Coming to the director, Pawan Kumar, who directed the original version made some minor tweaks to the Telugu version and succeeds most of the time with his narration. Music is a big plus as the thumping background score elevate a few scenes to a whole new level. Also, the camera works are of sublime quality and help in bringing an edge-of-the-seat experience to the viewers.
All in all, U-Turn is a suspense thriller that mainly banks on the performances of the lead cast and boy did they bring this movie to life. The likes of Samantha, Aadhi, and Rahul have shown a lot of dedication and that elevates the suspense drama even higher. However, a few unconvincing episodes towards the end are dealt on a weaker note. Even though the movie does not cater to a section of the audience who prefer mass masala entertainers, U-Turn can easily be given a shot if all you need is a well-etched thriller.

U turn - movie review.
Film: U Turn Cast: Samantha Akkineni, Adhi Pinishetty, Bhumika, Rahul Ravindran, Baby Siddiksha, Narain Dialogues: Bheem Music: Poornachandra Tejaswi Cinematography: Niketh Bommireddy Editor: Suresh Arumugam Art: AS Prakash, Ramanjaneyulu Action Stunts: Chetan D’Souza Producers: Srinivasaa Chhitturi, Rambabu Bandaru Banner: Srinivasaa Silver Screen Written and directed by: Pawan Kumar Release date: September 13, 2018 CBFC Rating: UA Running time: 128 mins
What’s it about! A rookie reporter Rachana (Samantha) is working on accidents happening at RK Puram flyover due to an unauthorized U Turn. A beggar gives her vehicle numbers that violate rules by taking U Turn putting the divider stones aside. A guy who violated this rule dies in the night, police come to know that Rachana was spotted entering his apartment and she becomes the suspect. When police interrogate her, she reveals that she has been noting down the vehicles and it turns out that all of them are suspected to be killed. She says she’s innocent and a young police officer (Adhi Pinishetty) begins the investigation process of the mysterious deaths. How all the deaths are connected to this flyover? What is the real mystery? Analysis ‘U Turn’ is remake of Kannada hit of the same name that was released in 2016. Directed by Pawan Kumar who also helmed the original Kannada movie. The film essentially talks about how a simple traffic violation leads to greater consequences. Pawan Kumar has packaged this drama in riveting manner by keeping suspense in most part. For those who don’t know the twist or watched the original like this reviewer, the happenings in the first half are quite intriguing and keeps you glued to the seats. The director begins the story like a murder mystery thriller by creating right mood, setting the hook. Protagonist (female lead here) becoming a suspect in series of deaths is not new but Pawan Kumar’s premise has lot of novelty. The protagonist here is reporter who is working on traffic violations and one thing leads to another. He builds right suspense by making us believe that she must be hiding something. The elements are slowly unravelled. Though the thread of her love track with Rahul Ravindran seems forcible in the beginning only in the later portions we get the real drama from this angle. Till the first half, the director keeps us engaged. There is not much dull moment. The major twist is revealed in the middle of the second half, and from there it turns quite predictable. The logic given to Bhumika’s episode doesn’t seem convincing. Overall, the film looks like a faithful remake of the original Kannada movie. Samantha shines in her role. She has given quite convincing performance in all important episodes. She makes many moments quite engaging. She also gets the look right for the journalist’s role. Initially her dubbing (she dubbed herself) seems a bit odd as we are not accustomed to this voice, it turns okay later. She still needs to polish the diction. Aadhi Pinishetty as police officer and Rahul Ravindran as crime reporter have pitched in neat performances. Bhumika in a cameo appearance is good. Naren and Narien are okay. Cinematography is top class; the cameraman has created the mood with the lighting. Although Hyderabad doesn’t have flyovers that people can easily remove stones of the divider, it is still believable. The background score is effective. Director Pawan Kumar has shown his skill in tight narration. Apart from good direction, he also drives an important point about traffic sense. Bottom-line: ‘U Turn’ is watchable thriller with engaging moments. The entire first half is riveting aided with Samantha’s good performance, effective narration and the mood. Towards the end, it turns predictable. Nevertheless, it is an interesting thriller.

U Turn Review
U Turn Review, What’s Behind:
Samantha is in full swing with consecutive super hits. This time she is coming up with female-centric suspense thriller U Turn, a remake of Kannada hit with same title. The film also stars Rahul Ravindran, Aadhi Pinisetty in key roles. Director Pawan Kumar stated that he changed climax from the original. So, those who watched U Turn original version too are waiting eagerly to know how different and thrilling climax of this remake version has.
U Turn Story Review:
Crime reporter Rachana (Samantha) with help of her colleague Aditya (Rahul Ravindran) is preparing an article on incidents at RK Puram flyover where motorists displace concrete blocks on a portion of road to take a quick U Turn to avoid a lengthy one way traffic and they are devoid of civic, traffic sense. Unexpectedly, Rachana is arrested as prime suspect in death of a motorist who took U Turn on this flyover. Inspector Nayak (Aadhi Pinisetty) who initially doubts Rachana’s role in this killing later tries to help her in investigation wherein it's inferred that all those who took wrong U Turn on the flyover ended their lives by committing suicide on same day. As mystery behind these suicides continues, Rachana takes a bold decision of getting herself into the case by deliberately taking a wrong U Turn. What happens next? What is the real motive behind this whole mystery?
U Turn Artists, Technicians Review:
Director Pawan Kaumar is known as an enlightened, intelligent writer and a talented filmmaker. His previous film Lucia stood terrific hit and then U Turn did wonders at Kannada Box Office. So as not to spoil the soul of original, he didn’t make many changes to script except for alteration in the climax. Although movie starts on slow note, it picks up by interval and then ends with disappointing climax. However, the technical team helped Pawan by giving their best. Sound design by Poorna Chandra Tejaswi and cinematography by Niketh Bommireddy are in perfect tone for a slow thriller. Suresh Armugan editing is tedious. Production values of VY Combines and Srinivasas Silver Screen are high in standard.
Onto artists, Samantha is undeniably the show stealer. She is truly a perfectionist and one will only notice the character Rachana but not the star Sam. She is too good in few key scenes like the one where a lawyer commits suicide in front of her and the dream where truth behind the killings is elaborated, Sam looked terrific. Aadhi Pinisetty is perfect for the police officer role and he is other big asset. Rahul Ravindran is a charmer but he didn’t get space. Bhumika made her presence felt in a brief role. Other artists are okay.
U Turn Review Advantages:
Samantha, Aadhi
U Turn Review Drawbacks:
Slow Take Off
Sick Second Half
Slow Narrative
Unconvincing Evil Soul
U Turn Review Rating Analysis:
We in our daily routine violate civic rules and commit mistakes. But few of them cannot be taken for granted. Such mistakes may turn fatal for others. For example, we drive vehicles in wrong direction and remove blocks on road to save a few minutes in traffic. U Turn is all about how such silly issues ruin an entire family and there is a social message to take home. But how far such story lines can make a full length feature film or short film is a benefit of doubt question.
Movie begins with the theme explanation of moved concrete divider blocks on a flyover to create a wrong U Turn. Introducing Samanta and her mom in a lengthy auto conversation is unneeded for. Things move very slow and uninformative manner until the occurrence of an unexpected incident in parallel with a romantic track ran between Sam and Rahul working in same newspaper. Probing Samantha as prime suspect in a suicide case also showed political pressures on high level police officials, which of course has no link with main plot. Investigation turns interestingly riveting with Aadhi's entry. Narrative pace picks up beautifully as the big mystery of all those persons who took wrong U Turn are no more alive. Pre-interval episode of lawyer committing suicide in front of Sam and Aadhi is bang on. Interval throws many questions about the mysterious flyover and second promises to be more interesting.
In fact, the latter half begins on lethargic note till the point where two youngsters imprisoned for breaking the same U Turn eventually end in police custody. This episode is deftly handled to raise the thrill quotient. Then Samantha herself opting to go on a wrong U Turn for cracking the mystery opens the doors for next proceedings. Horror scenes hereon are unconvincing and disappointing. Core excitement dries up gradually when movie comes to an dissatisfied climax.
All in all, U Turn is a safe film with sparse thrill elements and riveting at times. Had Pawan Kumar come up with a different pre-climax, climax without including horror setup, result could have been different. U Turn is not a film for all sections of audience. It may fare better in multiplexes. CJ goes with 2.75 stars and recommends for a one time watch for those who haven't watched the original.

'U Turn' Review: Turn Worth Taking
Movie: U Turn Rating: 3/5 Banner: Srinivasaa Silver Screen Cast: Samantha Akkineni, Adhi Pinishetty, Bhumika, Rahul Ravindran, Ravi Prakash and others Dialogues: Bheem Music: Poornachandra Tejaswi Cinematography: Niketh Editor: Suresh Arumugam Action: Chetan D’Souza Producers: Srinivasaa Chhitturi, Rambabu Bandaru Written and directed by: Pawan Kumar Release date: September 13, 2018
Samantha, one of the top leading ladies in Tollywood, has attempted to produce and act in a female-oriented thriller for the first time with 'U Turn' which won critical claim for its Kannada version.
The Telugu trailer drew attention too as it was intriguing. Amidst good buzz, the thriller hit the screens. Let’s find out more about this movie...
Story: A young reporter Rachana (Samantha) becomes the prime suspect in a case related to a series of deaths. She informs the young police officer that she’s working on the news story and she has nothing to do with the deaths happening at RK Puram flyover.
Initially, police don’t believe her story but later the young police officer (Aadhi Pinishetty) buys her version after watching a death that happens in front of his eyes.
How Rachana with the help of this police officer clears the puzzle behind the deaths forms the main story.
Artistes’ Performances: Samantha has pulled off the role of a young reporter with ease. Unlike her role in recent ‘Mahanati’, this journalist role is more real and contemporary. She has given her best shot though her dialogue delivery is not convincing.
Aadhi Pinishetty plays typical police officer role in his usual style. Bhumika actually appears in a guest role for ten minutes. Rahul Ravindran is just okay.
Technical Excellence: The film has fantastic technical qualities with first rate cinematography, good sound mixing and perfect production design. All the technicians have worked in tandem to create mood in the first half.
Highlights: First half Mood Technical aspects
Drawback: Predictable climax
Analysis: “U Turn” is remake of a Kannada movie of the same name and the original director Pawan Kumar has made it in Telugu as well. This is essentially a mystery thriller with super-natural elements.
As long as the film focuses on mystery part (the deaths and Samantha’s link to it) it is engaging, but it turns too predictable once the supernatural element is introduced.
Director Pawan Kumar has chosen a story that has an undercurrent social message -- people lacking basic traffic sense. This message is coated with mystery elements by focusing on minute details, building suspense, creating the mood.
The director has taken so much care to tell it in a realistic way though he forgets some basic points like how the police officers have no right to keep a woman for a night in the police station.
A senior-ranking officer’s constant growl against the young officer for probing further doesn’t make sense at all.
Despite these problems and slow pace, the movie is engaging enough till the interval without a doubt.
The film’s entire strength lies in the initial portions which give us the feel that we are watching a superb riveting thriller.
There are some stunning moments too and the director keeps the audience guessing with twists. However, the novelty and the interesting factor wears off as the movie progresses.
There isn't enough meat in the penultimate sequences to keep us engaged. When the twist is revealed, we get the feeling that it is a forcible trick. These sequences should have been dealt in a better way.
Logic also goes missing in the climax part.
All in all, ‘U Turn’ is a suspense thriller that offers some thrilling moments and banks heavily on performances and initial portions.
Bottom-line: Engaging Thriller

U Turn Review : Movie: U Turn Director : Pawan Kumar Producer: Srinivasa Chitturi, Rambabu Bandaru Production Company: BR8 Creations, V. Y. Combines, Srinivasa Silver Screen Music: Poorna Chandra Tejaswi Cast: Samantha, Aadhi Pinisetty, Rahul Ravindran, Bhumika Chawla Release Date: 13th September 2018 Rate: 3/5
After delivering three successful movies- Rangasthalam , Mahanati and Abhimanyudu , Samantha Akkineni is coming up with woman centric mystery thriller drama U Turn, which has hit the theaters today on the occasion of Vinayak Chavithi. The bilingual Tamil and Telugu U Turn is remake of 2016 Kannada movie of the same name, in which Shraddha Srinath played the lead role. Srinivasa Chitturi and Rambabu Bandaru are bankrolling it under the banners of BR8 Creations, VY Combines and Srinivasa Silver Screen. Let’s see the storyline.
Story: Rachana (Samantha Akkineni) is a journalist who is working on an article on the incidents at RK Puram flyover. She collects the information about people who neglect traffic rules and take a quick U-Turn to avoid the traffic on the flyover. In this process, she falls in a big risk. A homeless man sitting on the flyover notes down the vehicle numbers of commuters who violate the rule and take the U Turn and gives them to Rachana. Rachana decides to meet the first person on the list but he commits suicide. Police takes Rachana into custody as a suspect. SI Nayak (Aadhi Pinisetty) believes that Rachana is innocent and decides to help her during the investigation. What happens next? Will Rachana and SI Nayak become successful to solve the case? Are the deaths connected to each other and to the flyover? To get these answers, one should watch the movie on silver screen.
Plus Points:
- Samantha’s performance
- Aadhi Pinisetty
- Interval episode
Minus Points:
- Samantha’s dubbing
Performance: Once again Samantha Akkineni has proved with her performance that she is a versatile actress. She is good as a journalist. Samantha steals the show and she carries the entire movie on her shoulder but her dubbing disappoints the audience. Bhumika Chawla, who appears in a cameo, too essays her bit with fealty. Aadhi Pinisetty’s performance also needs lot of applause. Rest of the cast performed accordingly.
Technical: The story of U Turn is very interesting. Pawan Kumar handled the story and scenes very well. The dialogues are superb and the screenplay of the film is interesting. Background score is noteworthy. Cinematography by Niketh Bommireddy is superb and the movie has some fantastic visuals. The Editing by Suresh Armugam is good but some scenes in the second half could have been trimmed. Art department has done a superb job. The production values are good. The U Turn is at his best in technical department. One of major drawback of the film is Samantha’s dubbing.
Analysis: There is a supernatural element to the story and Pawan Kumar gives the hints right from the first frame as to how things will pan out. In the first half, the director keeps the audience hooked to the screen and the heart sinks when the climax is revealed. U Turn is a film that you can enjoy for its pure entertainment and thrill.

U Turn movie review: Samantha Akkineni-Pawan Kumar film delivers the thrills
U turn movie review: director pawan kumar has fixed all shortcomings in the remake of u turn. while firmly keeping the aspect of suspense intact, he has also built on the mystery and horror elements in the story..
U Turn movie cast: Samantha Akkineni, Rahul Ravindran, Bhumika Chawla U Turn movie director: Pawan Kumar U Turn rating: 3.5 stars
In U Turn, director Pawan Kumar sets the pace and mood of the story with the opening shot. An upside-down camera moves along the chain of roadblocks that divide the traffic flow on a busy flyover. The movement is rapid but steady. It is also philosophical considering the theme of the movie: karma will catch up with you, almost instantly. If you are a fan of Stranger Things, you are likely to read more into the camera angle, upside down, which suggest a horrifying parallel universe. The camera stops at a point, where the order of the roadblocks has been disrupted by somebody to create an illegal U Turn. The angle turns the right way up, suggesting the film is moving into the real world filled with flawed human beings.
Rachana (Samantha Akkineni) an intern with a newspaper has been chasing a story. It is a story about traffic offenders who move roadblocks on the RK Nagar flyover to create a short-cut. She has been collecting the vehicle numbers of such offenders from her source, a homeless man living on the side of the flyover. One day she goes to an offender’s residence to interview the person. She knocks on the door and gets no response. She leaves.
Rachana goes about her daily life. Her shy office crush Aditya (Rahul Ravindran) finally takes her out on a movie date. She returns home very happy. But, her happiness is short-lived as she becomes a primary accused in a case of a mysterious death. The plot thickens, when she finds out the traffic offenders she was tracking have all been killed. Her only ray of hope is police officer Nayak (effortlessly played by Aadhi Pinisetty), who believes in her innocence. His senior officer wants the case to be closed by any means due to political pressure. And his subordinates lack patience. Nayak is the only person in uniform who has the patience and interest to take the case to its logical conclusion.
Director Pawan told Indianexpress.com that making U Turn the second time gave him mixed feelings. He said the magic moments that happened during the shooting of the original Kannada version did not happen in the remake. But, the ‘magic moments’ have been compensated by the director’s precision and clarity in the narration. The Kannada version largely worked because the way Pawan builds up the suspense from the opening scene. In hindsight, the horror part of the film did not receive the due importance. Pawan, who is also the writer, has raised the stakes really high towards the end in the remake. After a point, it felt like I was watching the movie for the first time.
Pawan has fixed all shortcomings in the remake. While firmly keeping the aspect of suspense intact, he has also built on the mystery and horror elements in the story. As the director mentioned in the interview, the experienced star cast adds to the edge of the seat thriller. Samantha gives an endearing performance of a clueless person caught in the middle of a mystery. Though Shraddha Srinath did a good job in Kannada, Samantha delivers a better performance as an obsessive truth-seeker who puts herself in danger for some answers. Aadhi also scores points with his composed yet agitated performance as a wise police officer.
I’d love to discuss Bhumika Chawla’s performance as Maya. But, I can’t do it without revealing some spoilers. I will just say that her onscreen presence adds to the mystery.
I don’t recall watching such a neat investigative-mystery-horror-thriller in recent times.

U Turn Review – Right Twists And Turns
OUR RATING 3/5
CENSOR ‘U/A’Certified, 2 hrs 09 mins.
How Is Samantha Akkineni’s Performance? Samantha was terrific as the journalist. She has already done a similar part in Mahanati as well. The similarity ends at profession only, and U Turn takes her in a new direction. There are enough substance and moments where Samantha gets to showcase her acting talent. The pre-climax sequence is chilling, and she aces it. However, the rest is regular stuff, and the actress does it with casual ease.
The first half an hour appear weak when we look back at the whole film. The arrival of the police to arrest the character of Samantha is where the pace picks up and its relentless until the interval. If not for the early family and romance development time, the way the movie takes off after police entry, one could feel that interval coming very soon after entering the theatre.
The second half maintains the momentum but isn’t as racy. It isn’t a problem as the substitution comes in the form of thrill factor. The direction is what makes it all work and gives chills, predictable or otherwise, to the audience. The way the real motive is revealed is skilfully done. It is only towards the end when the real reason is out; there is a feeling of underwhelming.
Those who have got the twist earlier might feel even more let down. But, full credits to the director for keeping the suspense alive for the maximum duration without causing any disappointment. The screenplay is terrific for a thriller, and the casting and acting make the whole thing come alive.
Overall, U Turn is an easy one time watch in cinemas for the thrill it has to offer. Pawan Kumar could be a big name in future if he maintains the same directorial abilities and gets a fresh subject.

Preview: U Turn
For the Telugu version of the remake, it’s Samantha who is responsible for all the noise the film has been making and the positive buzz it had garnered, till date. She is indeed the selling point of the movie besides Pawan Kumar’s directorial prowess that was seen in the original Kannada movie.
The remaker versions are tweaked a bit and the last 30 minutes of the movie will be different from the original said the director. So, the intriguing factor is very well maintained by the team despite the fact that the original’s copy is available online through various sources. From whatever we have seen in the trailer, we understand that the background score of the movie is crucial along with the script.
As the director who helmed the original is at the helm of the things for both the Telugu and the Tamil versions of ‘U Turn’, we may expect the soul of the movie to be in the right place. By the way, there is Aadhi Pinishetty who stole our hearts with ‘Rangasthalam’. Samantha’s thriller is coming along with her hubby Chaitanya’s ‘Shailaja Reddy Alludu’, a mass entertainer.
The face-off between them is one of the reasons why the trade and the audiences are curiously waiting for the result. Keep watching this space for our genuine ‘U Turn’ review. We’ll be back, very soon with a comprehensive review. Stay tuned, folks!
