teacher movie review malayalam

teacher movie review malayalam

Teacher Movie Review: Tonally inconsistent revenge drama with a satisfying pay-off

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

I always approach films about sexual violence with a measure of caution. There is either a worry about filmmakers treating the subject exploitatively or depicting the crime in an extremely disturbing manner. I went into Vivek’s second feature, Teacher , not knowing what to expect and found, to my relief, that the film aligns with my philosophy of less is more. Of course, not all filmmakers —including women—would subscribe to this, but I believe that you don’t need to show all the triggering details to convey something. With Teacher , Vivek opts for minimalism, a strong feature of the Amala Paul-starrer, a rape-revenge drama with an immensely satisfying payoff. This minimalism is also a notable feature of Amala’s performance, especially when she gets suddenly hit with the shocking realisation of what really happened to her. It’s all about the bare essentials. Director: Vivek Cast: Amala Paul, Hakkim Shahjahan, Manju Pillai, Chemban Vinod Jose Interestingly, despite the upsetting nature of the central crime, the behaviour of Devika’s (Amala) husband, Sujith (Hakkim Shahjahan), and his colleagues in the incident’s aftermath proves more disturbing. Shahjahan’s casting is apt as one of the most annoying husbands in movie history. He gets all the misguided pearls of wisdom from a married colleague who represents the typical Malayali male sexist with his own twisted ideas about what being a “real man” means. Unsurprisingly, his bad ideas land Sujith and himself in trouble.

The film opens in medias res and takes a while before telling us it’s been a month after the incident. The couple has been awaiting the arrival of a third member in the family for a long time. Things go south upon the discovery that Devika is pregnant. The blows to Sujith's manhood don’t stop there, further compounding the deterioration of their bond.

Teacher is a contained story limiting its focus only to a few characters, doing things quietly instead of waking up the whole neighbourhood—except for, maybe, a shady motel’s inhabitants. There are clever storytelling choices that keep the police and media from getting involved. Devika ponders filing a police complaint at one point, but this is a film with other ideas. One of the standout actors is Manju Pillai as Patton Kalyani, a firebrand revolutionary with a dark past and Devika’s mother-in-law. She becomes her strong pillar of support during her most trying times.

The film gets an extra dose of energy when Chemban Vinod Jose shows up as another character with a dark past (and present). It’s a brief role crucial to how things pan out in the third act.

However, the film suffers from tonal inconsistency in several places. Manju Pillai makes some goosebump-inducing statements, but her inclusion doesn’t feel organic. Other fiery moments, such as the revelation of Devika possessing some abilities, feel too sudden. The novelty factor is missing, given the memory of a similar development in a recent Malayalam film.

Occasionally, the mechanical quality of the actors’ performances can be bothersome. I wished for a more layered approach. The former quality is particularly noticeable in a cameo from Nikhil Renji Panicker, but in this character’s case, it makes some sense owing to the air of mystery around his background.

The minimalistic approach I mentioned earlier also extends to Anu Moothedath’s photography, which doesn’t call attention to itself, and is largely mood-based. The ever-reliable Dawn Vincent’s dread-inducing background score also helps build the atmosphere.

Reflecting on the film’s totality, I remember the individual scenes making more impact than everything else. When one considers the better-written and staged, albeit more violent, examples of films in the same genre in international cinema, one is bound to find the writing in the Teacher slightly lacking.

The Teacher Movie Review (2022)

Vivek's underwhelming 'The Teacher' (Malayalam) might have worked better as a pulpy B-movie than a “serious film with good intentions”

The Teacher Movie Review in English

The Teacher Movie Cast & Crew

Vivek follows Athiran with The Teacher , and one of the nicest bits of the film takes place in a bus. Sujith (Hakkim Shajahan) is on a call to his wife, Devika (Amala Paul). He has made a mistake, a big mistake. He is apologising.  And while this call is taking place, the woman in the next seat keeps looking at him. After Sujith hangs up, she tells him that she has been married a long time and never once has her husband said sorry to her. She's happy that at least this young generation of men has changed. If only she knew. The scene plays like the woman's story but it's actually Sujith's character that's revealed. He isn't really the man that this woman thinks he is. Well, he could have been that man if all things had gone his way. But it's how we handle the unexpected that makes us show our true colours. And Sujith's true colours aren't pretty.

Sujith loves Devika. He hasn't hit her or abused her. The only blip in their marriage is that they don't have a child. And when Sujith discovers Devika is pregnant, his reaction is beautiful. Hakkim makes us see the happiness and also the relief – he makes us feel every bit of a man who wants a child not just because he genuinely wants a child but because his patriarchal mindset can finally rest in peace that he has finally done what a Real Man is supposed to do. And it's this pregnancy that becomes the root of all that goes wrong subsequently. A rock-solid Amala Paul shows us the grit in a woman who faces difficult choices – but both she and Hakkim are let down by the writing that makes their unexpected journey fairly predictable. I wondered how the film would have turned out had the screenplay revealed the reason for Devika's unhappiness after a while, after she and Sujith celebrate the pregnancy. What if the Big Reveal had happened as… a Big Reveal to both Devika and the audience at a later point?

The Teacher is one of those films whose name assumes several meanings. Devika is a sports teacher. She teaches students and she also teaches some young boys a big lesson. Hakkim's mother (Manju Pillai) teaches him a thing or two about being a good husband, a good man. There’s a martial arts teacher. But the film’s layers are very obviously set out, and certain subplots - like the one involving a sexually abused girl - are written with zero subtlely. The way Devika discovers a crucial truth about the reason for her lack of joy about her pregnancy – that’s a great scene. But the other characters are so one-note that we know instantly what their function in this narrative is. Prashanth Murali plays Sujith's best friend, and his character is one of the most predictable. What's not predictable is the ending – but it comes out of the blue and it feels false, unlike a similar scene in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey , where things were gradually built up to that point.

The point is not whether characters like the one played by Prashanth Murali or Manju Pillai exist. Of course they do. But on film, we want some three-dimensionality and not just one trait that defines this person or that one: Sexist Man, or Strong Woman, and so on. A scene with a gynaecologist feels like it has been put in just to feed the audience and Hakkim some information. Other scenes - like the one where Hakkim goes looking for cigarettes and finds something else, or even Devika’s sudden and instant transformation – seem very conveniently written. There's very little finesse. Given the pulpy way The Teacher reaches its end, there's a nice little B-movie to be made from this material. But Vivek wants to make serious points, and they just don't land. The people are unconvincing, and so is the film.

Tovino Thomas-starrer 'Nadikar' only exudes a whiff of charm | Movie Review

Princy Alexander

After films like 'Honey Bee' and 'Driving Licence' , Jean Paul Lal is back with 'Nadikar', which revolves around a superstar whose success is on the wane. Going by the title 'Nadikar', one would expect it to be glamorous, lofty, and set in a fantasy world. But Jean Paul's 'Nadikar' only exudes a whiff of charm as it resorts to a lacklustre storyline, contrary to what 'Nadikar' could have been. It's a good thing that the movie makers agreed to rename the movie to 'Nadikar' from 'Nadikar Thilakam'. David Padikkal played by Tovino Thomas is a superstar who is struggling to stay relevant after a string of flops. The opening shots of the film highlight his superstardom with a focus on David's previous movies with his lover and co-star Ann, played by Bhavana. This is reminiscent of the opening scenes in 'Driving License', a film written by Sachy and helmed by Lal Jr. 'Nadikar' portrays David's superstardom and success with some cliche scenes filled with free-flowing booze, money, and women. Though nothing much is given about David's past, we get to know that he attained his stardom after three successive hits. However, the newfound stardom gets to his head and David soon stumbles.

Lal Jr employs some of the tropes that were part of his earlier works. In 'Honey Bee', Baburaj's character Fernando d'Silva often jabbers in Manglish (Malayalam and English) for comic effect. In 'Nadikar' too, Suresh Krishna has this tendency to speak similarly whenever he gets excited. Suresh Krishna, as David Padikkal's manager Paily and Balu Varghese who plays his friend Lenin, offer some comic relief in the movie, though some of the jokes fall flat. It is refreshing to see Bhavana on screen after a while, and you wish she had more screen space in the movie. However, it is Salim Kumar's son Chandu who truly steals the show with his performance as a hardcore fan of David Padikkal. You get to see traces of Salimkumar, especially in his dialogue delivery, which was not as obvious in the recently hit film 'Manjummel Boys'.

Some of the scenes in 'Nadikar' are thought-provoking though and give us an insight into how stardom can lead to destruction if one is not disciplined enough. It also highlights the need for personal-reflection on a frequent basis. Tovino as David Padikkal pulls off his character with elan, especially in the emotional scenes. The music by Neha Nair and Yakzan Gary Pareira is refreshing, though there are very few tracks in the movie, which could have benefited from more songs.

Mrunal Thakur Reviews Manjummel Boys, Says ‘What a Film’

By Aditi Rathi

Actress Mrunal Thakur has been quite active in the South cinema. She was last seen in the Telugu movie The Family Star opposite Vijay Deverakonda. While the actress has been signing movies in different languages, it seems that she is also interested in various cinemas. Her latest watch was the Malayalam survival drama Manjummel Boys, which impressed her extensively.

Manjummel Boys broke the records of the Malayalam film industry and was later dubbed in various languages. The heart-wrenching survival drama won many hearts with its story based on a real-life incident. Many celebrities have praised the film, and the latest one is Mrunal Thakur.

Mrunal Thakur heaps praise on Manjummel Boys

Taking to her Instagram stories, Mrunal Thakur praised Manjummel Boys. She tagged director Chidambaram and mentioned how emotional the movie was. She wrote, “WHAT A FILM; OMG Rollercoaster ride of emotions!” The Hi Nanna star further penned, “You boys absolutely nailed it; Congratulations to the entire cast and crew.”

Manjummel Boys follows the story of the 2006 incident that took place at the infamous Guna Caves, aka Devil’s Kitchen, of Tamil Nadu. A group of friends from Kerala visited the caves where Kamal Haasan’s Guna film was shot. When they cross the safety zone, one of them falls deep into the caves.

All attempts of the group went in vain to rescue their friend. As a result, they go beyond expectations to save him. Soubin Shahir plays a crucial role in the movie. Moreover, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Khalid Rahman, Ganapathi S Poduval, Lal Jr, and others play crucial parts.

The movie recently made its digital debut on DisneyPlus Hotstar in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi. Its official synopsis reads, “Manjummel Boys’ carefree adventure takes a dangerous turn when one of them plunges into Guna Caves, igniting a test of unity in a gripping fight for survival.”

With Teacher, Vivek opts for minimalism, a strong feature of the Amala Paul-starrer, a rape-revenge drama with an immensely satisfying payoff.
