Submitting Assignments

You can see a listing of all Assignments in a course by navigating to the Assessments menu and selecting Assignments .

File Submission Assignments

Brightspace has two types of assignments. The most common are File Submission assignments where you upload an MS Word (.docx) or PDF (.pdf) format. Most word processing software can save/export files in either of those formats.

Use the Add a File , Record Audio , or Record Video buttons to submit work to File Submission assignments. When done, click or tap the Submit button. Note, the mobile version of this screen is the same as depicted, just narrower.

Text Submission Assignments

The other type of assignment in Brightspace is Text Submission . These assignments require you to type or paste directly into a text editor box . In addition to text, y ou can add hyperlinks, images, video, and audio. See below for a detailed description of the editor’s buttons. When done, click the Submit button so your professor can grade your work. Note : if you plan on writing a lot, consider drafting your text in a separate program, such as MS Word and then copying and pasting it into the assignment’s text editor box. This will prevent you from losing work in the event you lose your internet connection.

Type or Paste text into the Brightspace Editor box to submit work to File Submission assignments. When done, click or tap the Submit button. Note, the mobile version of this screen is the same as depicted, just narrower.

Leveraging Brightspace to foster academic development and immersive pedagogy

De Montfort University uses D2L’s virtual learning environment to initiate cultural change and introduce new pedagogical approaches

D2L at THE DU UK 2024

There is a lot of discussion in the higher education space about digital transformation. To avoid descending into cliches and buzzwords, universities must think clearly about the practical steps they need to take in the process of digitalisation and what this means for the student experience. For De Montfort University, this means implementing a virtual learning environment (VLE) suitable for its academic ambitions.

“We took a pedagogy-first approach to the Brightspace VLE,” said Carmen Miles, head of digital education at De Montfort University, at a session held in partnership with D2L at the 2024 THE Digital Universities UK event. “This helped us with our overarching educational aims. We are now in the pedagogical exploration zone. We recognise that it’s a continuous enhancement.”

One of the biggest drivers of the university’s pedagogical innovation is the staff’s desire for change and leadership support, said Miles. The institution has also worked very closely in partnership with D2L, the vendor behind Brightspace. “We are developing a signature pedagogy and the VLE will be instrumental in that,” said Miles.

As the university was implementing Brightspace, it also shifted to a block teaching model. “To support our change to block teaching, we wanted a platform that was more intelligent, left a different visual impression and represented a clear break from the past,” said Alasdair Blair, the university’s associate pro vice-chancellor for academic. “There was a sense of change at the university.”

The university launched several pedagogical initiatives to facilitate changes in its academic culture. “One of the key challenges we had was how to not only upskill our academics but also facilitate a change in the ways of working,” said Miles. “We recognised that academic development was going to be a huge enabler for change.”

The university has launched a project called Art of the Possible, which is an ongoing pedagogic enhancement programme that aims to capture what different stakeholders want from the Brightspace platform. It has launched a multimodal training scheme for faculty members on module building, which gives them the option to complete a self-paced programme or attend a weekly session on campus. Additionally, the university uses staff and student ambassadors to maintain the momentum these initiatives have generated within the community.

The university uses the theory of change framework to document the benefits of using a VLE for teaching excellence in areas such as student experience, staff experience and innovation. “Our adoption of the Brightspace VLE, our shift to block teaching and all the changes that they have entailed have also been accompanied by an important shift in how we think about the resources that we need and how we will utilise them going forward,” said Blair. “We benefited from strong buy-in and strong user engagement,” he added. “Cultural change is very important, but you have to be realistic and work with people.”

Assignment Submission Type Overview

Instructors have several submission type options when they create an assignment in the Assignment tool.  These types are File submission , Text submission , On paper submission , and Observed in person .  Below you will find definitions for these submission types so that you may better understand which type to select when creating your assignments.

submitting assignments on brightspace

File submission:   This submission type is the default when you create an assignment.  This type requires students to submit a document in order to complete the assignment.  If a student only types text into the comment box of the submission page and does not attach a document, Brightspace will not allow them to submit.

submitting assignments on brightspace

Text submission: This type of submission provides students with a text box to type a response.  Nothing else is required.

submitting assignments on brightspace

On paper submission: This type of submission allows instructors to receive student submissions in person (on paper) and still provide a grade through Brightspace.  Students are not able to submit anything to this type of assignment, but they can still receive feedback and a grade from the instructor.  The instructor also has the option of uploading the paper assignment back to the student when they provide their feedback and grade.

Observed in person: Similarly to the “On paper submission” type, this submission type does not allow students to submit anything through Brightspace.  If students make a presentation in class but are not submitting anything, this submission type would allow instructors to assign a grade and provide feedback through Brightspace.

Guardians designate veteran OF for assignment, promote No. 16 prospect

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians have parted ways with struggling outfielder Ramón Laureano, designating the seven-year veteran for assignment ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Mets at Progressive Field.

In a related move, Cleveland recalled outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez from Triple-A Columbus to take Laureano’s spot on the active roster.

Rodriguez, the club’s No. 16 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was added to the 40-man roster in November after his best year as a professional in 2023. A third-round pick in the 2017 draft, Rodriguez was an Eastern League All-Star and the Guardians Hitting Prospect of the Year in 2023 according to MLB.com.

He split last season between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, batting .289 with 18 home runs, 55 RBI and an .876 OPS for the RubberDucks. After moving to the Clippers in late July, Rodriguez hit .280 with 11 home runs, 33 RBI and a .936 OPS.

Manager Stephen Vogt said Rodriguez has hit the ball well since opening with Columbus in March.

“He’s been driving the ball all over the ballpark, been playing pretty good defense and really starting to mature and develop as a player overall,” Vogt said. “Really excited to have JRod here and see what he can bring.”

In 156 at-bats for Columbus this year, Rodriguez has a .276 average with seven home runs, 28 RBI and an .838 OPS.

Laureano, 29, joined Cleveland in August 2023 after he was released by Oakland. In 41 games for Cleveland last year, he hit .243 with three home runs, 14 RBI and 41 strikeouts. His .342 on-base percentage after joining the roster Aug. 7 was fourth-best on the club. Laureano reached base safely in 24 of his final 32 games to finish year and posted an .808 OPS after Aug. 24.

The Guardians avoided arbitration with Laureano and signed him to a $5.15 million contract for the 2024 campaign. But the 29-year-old right handed hitter struggled to get on track in the club’s first 47 games. Laureano hit .143 with one home run and four RBI to go along with 32 strikeouts in 83 plate appearances across 31 games.

Vogt said it was a disappointing day with having to release Laureano, a teammate of the Guardians skipper when he was in Oakland.

“It was just time, on both sides,” Vogt said. “Not a fun day or decision, but we wish Ramón nothing but the best and we’re excited that JRod’s here.”

Rodriguez, meanwhile, is tied for fourth in the organization in home runs, RBI and total bases. He has appeared in 26 games in right field and 12 in left while batting .346 with runners in scoring position.

Vogt said the Guardians believe Rodriguez is ready to see what he can do against major league pitching.

“He’s worked really hard and done some things that we asked of him coming out of spring,” Vogt said. “Andy Tracy (Triple-A manager) does such a good job down there of helping those guys develop into major leaguers. We couldn’t be more thankful for the work that Trace and all the guys that have put their hands on ‘em down there in Columbus.”
