Whether you are in high school, college, or beyond, organization is key to academic success. Did you know that you can actually improve your grades if you can organize your homework and study time effectively? One way to do this is to incorporate a color coding system into your homework routine.

Here's how it works.

1. Gather a Set of Inexpensive, Colored Supplies

You may want to start with a pack of colored highlighters, then find folders, notes, and stickers to match them.

  • Sticky notes
  • Highlighters
  • Colored labels, flags, or round stickers (for sale items)

2. Select a Color for Each Class

For example, you may want to use the following colors with a system like this:

  • Orange=World History
  • Green=Math
  • Red=Biology
  • Yellow=Health or PE
  • Blue=Geography
  • Pink=Literature

3. Make a Mental Connection Between the Color and the Class

For instance, you might relate the color green to money—to make you think of math.

You may have to play around with the color system to make each color makes sense for each class. This is just to get you started. The color connection will be clear in your mind after a few days.

4. Folders

Obviously, you'll use each folder to keep track of homework for each class. The type of folder isn't important; just use the type that is best for you or the type that your teacher requires.

5. Sticky Notes

Sticky notes are useful when doing library research, writing down book and article titles, quotes, brief passages to use in your paper, bibliographical citations , and reminders. If you can’t carry around several packs of sticky notes, then keep white notes and use colored pens.

6. Colored Flags

These handy markers are for marking pages or reading assignments in books. When your teacher gives a reading assignment, just place a colored flag at the beginning and ending points.

Another use for colored flags is marking a date in your organizer. If you carry around a calendar, always place a flag marker on a date when an important assignment is due. That way, you'll have a constant reminder that a due date is approaching.

7. Highlighters

Highlighters should be used when reading over your notes. In class, take notes as normal—and be sure to date them. Then, at home, read over and highlight in an appropriate color.

If papers get separated from your folder (or never make it into your folder) you can easily recognize them by the colored highlights.

8. Labels or Round Stickers

Stickers or labels are great for keeping your wall calendar organized. Keep a calendar in your room or office, and place a color-coded sticker on the day that an assignment is due.

For instance, on the day you receive a research paper assignment in history class, you should place an orange sticker on the due date. This way, everyone can see an important day approaching, even at a glance.

Why Use Color Coding?

Color coding can come in useful in a number of ways, even for a very  disorganized student . Just think: if you see a random paper floating around you’ll be able to know at a glance if it’s a history note, research paper note, or math paper.

Organizing your notes and paperwork isn’t the only part of a good homework system. You need a space designated for the time spent studying and working that is also well kept and organized.

Ideally, you should have a desk in a well-lit, comfortable, and quiet area. Keeping your workspace organized is just as important as your work. Even though you may keep a planner with you, a wall calendar can be exceptionally useful. School isn’t your whole life and sometimes you have a lot of clubs and engagements to keep track of. Having all that information in one spot will help you organize everything in your life, to make sure you never have conflicting obligations.

Using colours to do homework

Colourful stationery on a desk

Listen to the presentation about using colours to organise homework and do the exercises to practise and improve your listening skills.

Instructions

Do the preparation exercise before you listen. Then do the other exercises to check your understanding.

Preparation

Girl: My presentation is about how you can use colour coding to organise your homework.

To start you need a few things from the stationery shop. This photo shows the things I use. They aren't expensive. They are all cheap. I've got coloured pens and pencils, sticky notes, page markers, glue and folders.

First, I choose a different colour for each school subject.  The colour I choose has to be easy to remember so I make sure it means something to me. Maths is green because my ruler is green. PE is yellow because my trainers are yellow.

Here is a photo of my folders. I use the cheapest kind and I add a coloured sticky note to the top and to the front. I keep all my notes inside the different folders.

This is a photo of some more sticky notes. I wrote them in the library when I was studying. The blue notes are for history. My history teacher has got a blue car! The black notes are for geography. One day I want to visit the Black Sea.

This photo shows the pages I need to read for homework. I use two coloured page markers to mark where it starts and ends. Those blue ones mark the pages I need to read for history.

Finally, this last photo shows my wall calendar. This green star shows I have a maths test on Friday. This pink circle shows I've got French homework for Monday. It's pink because 'pink' is 'rose' in French … and the rose is my favourite flower.

How to use sticky notes on windows 10.

Microsoft transformed the Sticky Notes app in with Windows 10's Anniversary Update.

How to launch sticky notes, sticky notes 101, writing with a pen, getting insights, windows doesn't sync your sticky notes, but you can back them up.

Microsoft transformed the Sticky Notes app in with Windows 10's Anniversary Update . The new Sticky Notes app supports pen input and offers reminders and other "insights", thanks to Cortana. It's a convenient, lightweight alternative to OneNote  for taking quick notes.

The Sticky Notes app is like any other application included with Windows 10. You can launch it by opening the Start menu, searching for "Sticky Notes", and clicking the shortcut. Once launched, you can right-click the Sticky Notes icon and select "Pin to Taskbar" if you plan to use it frequently.

Related: How to Open Sticky Notes on Startup in Windows 11

Sticky Notes can also be launched from  the Windows Ink Workspace , if you have a Windows device with a pen. Click or tap the ink icon on your taskbar and select "Sticky Notes". To show the Windows Ink Workspace button if you can't see it, right-click your taskbar and select "Show Windows Ink Workspace Button".

The app is simple to use. By default, you'll see a yellow sticky note. You can type whatever you want into the note and Windows will save your note for later.

To create a new note, click the "+" button. To delete the current note, click the trash can button. To change the color of a note, click the "..." menu button and select one of the color circles.

These windows can be moved or resized as normal. Just click-and-drag or touch-and-drag the title bar to move them, or click-and-drag or touch-and-drag a corner of the window to resize them.

Move note windows around on your desktop by clicking and dragging (or touching and dragging) the title bar. You can also resize notes by clicking and dragging or touching and dragging at a corner, making them as small or large as you like.

If your Windows device has a pen or stylus, you can draw or write notes directly in a sticky note. You just have to start with an empty note---every note can either contain typed text or something drawn with the stylus, but not both.

Sticky Notes works along with Cortana , Windows 10's integrated virtual assistant, to provide more information.

This feature is called "Insights", and it's enabled by default. To check if Insights are enabled, click the "..." menu icon in a note and click the gear-shaped settings icon at the bottom left corner of the note. Ensure "Enable Insights" is set to "On" if you want to use this feature.

When you type or write something like a flight number---for example, "AA1234"--- it will turn blue. This works both for typed text and for handwritten text you wrote with a pen. Click or tap the blue text to see more information.

For example, you could write a flight number and then click or tap it in the note to view up-to-date flight tracking information.

Sticky Notes are also integrated with Cortana for reminders. This is just another type of "insight". When you type something with a time or date, the time or date will turn blue and you can click or tap it to set a reminder.

For example, let's say you type or write "Lunch at 12:30" or "Go shopping tomorrow" in a note. "12:30" or "tomorrow" will turn blue. Click or tap it and Sticky Notes will ask if you want to create a reminder. Select "Add Reminder" and it will create a Cortana reminder about this event.

You can even get these reminders on your phone if you install the Cortana app for  iPhone  or Android phone  and sign in with the same Microsoft account you use on your PC.

Sticky Notes offers other insights, too. It will automatically detect the following things, whether you type them with your keyboard or write them with a pen:

  • Phone numbers : Call phone numbers like "1-800-123-4567" using Skype.
  • Email addresses : Compose emails to email addreses like "[email protected]".
  • Web addresses : Open web addresses like "www.howtogeek.com" with your web browser.
  • Physical addresses : View the location of a street address like "123 Fake Street, California 12345" and you can view its location and get directions via the Maps app.
  • Stock symbols : View the performance of stock symbols like "$MSFT".

Some of these features may only work in certain countries at the moment, but Microsoft is extending them to new languages and countries with the Creators Update . Expect Microsoft to continue adding Insights and continue expanding the available Insights to more people in the future.

Related: How to Back Up and Restore Sticky Notes in Windows

As of Windows 10's Anniversary Update, Sticky Notes don't sync between your different Windows 10 devices. They're stored on your computer in a local database for the Sticky Notes app. You can back up your Sticky Notes and restore them on a different PC, but you have to do that yourself.

Sticky Notes are ideal for quick, transient notes you don't want to keep for a while.  For more complex notes, notes you want to keep for a long time, and notes you just want to sync between your devices, you'll want to use a more full-featured note-taking app.

For example, Microsoft's own OneNote is included with Windows 10 and is very capable . But Sticky Notes is a convenient, lightweight alternative if you just want to jot down a phone number without going into your OneNote notebook.

Keyboard shortcuts for Sticky Notes

Many users find that using an external keyboard with keyboard shortcuts for Sticky Notes on Windows helps them work more efficiently. For users with mobility or vision disabilities, keyboard shortcuts can be easier than using the touchscreen and are an essential alternative to using a mouse.

The shortcuts in this topic refer to the US keyboard layout. Keys for other layouts might not correspond exactly to the keys on a US keyboard.

A plus sign (+) in a shortcut means that you need to press multiple keys at the same time.

A comma sign (,) in a shortcut means that you need to press multiple keys in order.

When using Narrator, your keyboard will default to the Standard layout. To change this in the Narrator settings, press the Windows logo key+Ctrl+N. Press the Tab key until you hear: "Select keyboard layout, Standard." To change the layout to Legacy , press the Down arrow key once. You hear: "Legacy, selected." The new Narrator commands will not be available in the Legacy keyboard layout if keystrokes for legacy commands conflict with those used in new Narrator features.

When I first downloaded this, I was able to use it without ChromeOS. Even after going back to a machine running Windows OS, I was still able to access my notes. Now, I find that I am unable to do that unless I have ChromeOS. That doesn't suit my needs, so I guess my notes are lost forever. They never synced to my Google Drive like the updates claim it could do. Hope I didn't have anything important there.

Houston Astros Cheating Again, Pitcher Suspended For Sticky Substance on Glove

May 14, 2024; Houston, Texas, USA; Houston Astros starting pitcher Ronel Blanco (56) reacts after

  • Houston Astros

Are the Houston Astros trying to cheat their way out of the AL West cellar? Moments like Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park won't help their case.

Right-handed pitcher Ronel Blanco was ejected prior to the start of the fourth inning in a 2-1 win over the Oakland Athletics after umpires found a sticky substance inside his glove. Blanco was slapped with a 10-game suspension by MLB on Wednesday, thus hindering Houston's rotation, which currently ranks 27th in ERA at 4.78.

Blanco, one of baseball's breakout stars in 2024, left the dugout and met with first-base umpire Erich Bacchus, who performed a standard check of his glove. After further review, Bacchus called over the three other umpires for further inspection.

Crew chief and third-base umpire Laz Diaz determined the substance was ineligible for use, thus leading to the ejection. Through three innings, Blanco had been near-perfect, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four A's.

Blanco's glove was confiscated by Bacchus, who ran off the field with it and took it for further review. Following the game, Diaz said the glove would be sent to the league office for the commissioner's office to determine the actual substance.

"I didn’t know that was illegal. I see other pitchers come in and do it, as well, so I thought that was normal." -  Ronel Blanco on the substance

Blanco, who currently boasts a 4-0 record with a 2.23 ERA in seven starts, said the substance was rosin he had put on his forearm and  the sweat coming off made the glove sticky. Diaz said the crew couldn't determine the actual substance, though it was sticky enough to get his fingers stuck.

Blanco and Astros manager Joe Espada tried to plead a case to let him use a new glove and continue pitching, but the decision had already been made. The right-hander now awaits the decision from the league office to determine if he will be suspended, though Blanco, through a Spanish interpreter , said he would appeal the case given that this was his first offense.

“It’s something that’s obviously extremely frustrating. I want to go out there and compete and try to help the team and I couldn't." -  Ronel Blanco on appealing the case

The Astros (17-25), who illegally used a camera system to steal signs during the 2017 regular season and postseason en route to winning their first World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers, are currently in fourth place in the AL West behind Seattle, Texas and Oakland.

Houston Astros pitcher Ronel Blanco handed 10-game suspension over 'sticky substance' on glove

Image: Houston Astros starting pitcher Ronel Blanco

Houston Astros pitcher Ronel Blanco was issued a 10-game suspension Wednesday after a "sticky substance" was discovered on his glove.

Blanco, 30, was ejected from Tuesday night's game against the Oakland Athletics over violation of rules regarding foreign substances, according to a press release from the Michael Hill, Major League Baseball’s senior vice president of on-field operations. The pitcher was also issued an undisclosed fine.

During the game Blanco attempted to tell the umpires that he was using rosin, a permitted substance inside a cloth bag that fans often see beside the pitcher's mound or in a pitcher's pocket.

Though it is permitted for players to use on their bare hands, rosin is forbidden from touching their gloves or baseball.

Astros general manager Dana Brown said Blanco was using rosin because he "sweats profusely," according to MLB.com . The tree sap is allowed to be used for sweat because it helps to combat slipperiness during the game.

"I think it was a combination of the rosin and the sweat, and it’s the umpire’s call," Brown said. "He made the judgment that he thought it was a sticky substance, so we’re at the mercy of what his judgment is."

It appeared during the game that the umpires examined the glove to try to determine whether the rosin was an accidental transfer while talking to Blanco and the Astros staff. According to the game commentators, it was determined that the substance on the glove was "too thick" and he was forced to leave the game, as per the MLB rules.

The glove was taken off the field for further assessment.

Blanco had the opportunity to appeal the decision but decided to take the ruling without a fight, according to Brown.

“Ronel Blanco is a good human being, he’s a good dude, and he’s worked his butt off to get into the starting rotation,” Brown said. “I think he sees it as, ‘Look, I don’t want to extend this any longer. I want to get back to the business of pitching.’”
