‘Come, Follow Me’ for June 3-9: What have Church leaders said about Mosiah 29-Alma 4?

This week’s study guide includes the start of the reign of the judges, nehor’s death and amlici’s war against the nephites.

"Alma the Younger Preaching" is by Gary L. Kapp.

By Kaitlyn Bancroft

This week’s “ Come, Follow Me ” study guide covers Mosiah 29 - Alma 4 , which includes the start of the reign of the judges, Nehor’s death and Amlici’s war against the Nephites.

Following are a few quotes from past and present Church leaders and scholars about these chapters.

“In public, what religious persons say and do involves other considerations. The free exercise of religion covers most public actions, but it is subject to qualifications necessary to accommodate the beliefs and practices of others. Laws can prohibit behavior that is generally recognized as wrong or unacceptable, like sexual exploitation, violence or terrorist behavior, even when done by extremists in the name of religion. Less grievous behaviors, even though unacceptable to some believers, may simply need to be endured if legalized by what a Book of Mormon prophet called ‘the voice of the people’ ( Mosiah 29:26 ).

“On the subject of public discourse, we should all follow the gospel teachings to love our neighbor and avoid contention. Followers of Christ should be examples of civility. We should love all people, be good listeners and show concern for their sincere beliefs. Though we may disagree, we should not be disagreeable. Our stands and communications on controversial topics should not be contentious. We should be wise in explaining and pursuing our positions and in exercising our influence. In doing so, we ask that others not be offended by our sincere religious beliefs and the free exercise of our religion.”

— Then-Elder Dallin H. Oaks , now first counselor in the First Presidency, October 2014 general conference, “ Loving Others and Living With Differences ”

“Those who have served as public officials soon learn that there is always the imperative necessity of deciding whether or not demands on a controversial issue are being made by a well-organized loud minority or by a greater majority of those who might be less vocal but whose cause is just and in accordance with righteous principles. Always we would do well to reflect upon the counsel of a wise king of ancient times: ‘Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore … do your business by the voice of the people’ ( Mosiah 29:26 ).

“Let this counsel of that wise ancient king be our counsel to our Church members and the honorable of the earth everywhere. Be alert and active in your business and political interests. The great danger in any society is apathy and a failure to be alert to the issues of the day, when applied to principles or to the election of public officials.”

— President Harold B. Lee, April 1972 general conference, “ A Time of Decision ”

This painting of Nehor is from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“The Book of Mormon contains the account of a man named Nehor. It is easy to understand why Mormon, in abridging a thousand years of Nephite records, thought it important to include something about this man and the enduring influence of his doctrine. Mormon was seeking to warn us, knowing that this philosophy would surface again in our day.

“Nehor appeared on the scene about 90 years before the birth of Christ. He taught ‘that all mankind should be saved at the last day… for the Lord had created all men, and had also redeemed all men; and, in the end, all men should have eternal life’ ( Alma 1:4 ). …

“As in the days of Nehor … we live in a time not long before the advent of Jesus Christ — in our case, the time of preparation for His Second Coming. And similarly, the message of repentance is often not welcomed. Some profess that if there is a God, He makes no real demands upon us. Others maintain that a loving God forgives all sin based on simple confession, or if there actually is a punishment for sin, ‘God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God’ ( 2 Nephi 28:8 ). ...

“On the surface such philosophies seem appealing because they give us license to indulge any appetite or desire without concern for consequences. By using the teachings of Nehor … we can rationalize and justify anything. When prophets come crying repentance, it ‘throws cold water on the party.’ But in reality the prophetic call should be received with joy. ... Only through repentance do we gain access to the atoning grace of Jesus Christ and salvation. Repentance is a divine gift, and there should be a smile on our faces when we speak of it. It points us to freedom, confidence and peace.”

— Elder D. Todd Christofferson , Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2011 general conference, “ The Divine Gift of Repentance ”

“The pleasures of the body can become an obsession for some; so too can the attention we give to our outward appearance. Sometimes there is a selfish excess of exercising, dieting, makeovers and spending money on the latest fashions (see Alma 1:27 ).

“I am troubled by the practice of extreme makeovers. Happiness comes from accepting the bodies we have been given as divine gifts and enhancing our natural attributes, not from remaking our bodies after the image of the world. The Lord wants us to be made over — but in His image, not in the image of the world, by receiving His image in our countenances.”

— Sister Susan W. Tanner, then the Young Women general president, October 2005 general conference, “ The Sanctity of the Body ”

“Patterns are meant to be repeated. A pattern of righteousness is worthy of duplication, yet there are those who suppose that our righteousness involves climbing some imaginary vertical ladder. We then think we hasten our progress by trying to get above or ahead of others. I believe this is pride. In Alma we are told, ‘The preacher was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than the learner; and thus they were all equal, and they did all labor, every man according to his strength’ ( Alma 1:26 ). Righteousness is reproduced horizontally, not vertically. When we establish a pattern of righteousness in our lives, we commit to our Heavenly Father to do all in our power to help others reproduce this pattern in their lives.”

— Sister Janette C. Hales, then the second counselor in the Young Women general presidency, April 1991 general conference, “ A Pattern of Righteousness ”

“As the Savior’s disciples, we also bless our neighbors as we keep our covenants and lead Christlike lives. The Book of Mormon teaches that ‘the people of the church’ must not only choose righteousness but also make their righteous voices heard if they wish the Lord to protect and prosper them (see Alma 2:3–7 ). The Lord expects us to share our faith and beliefs and to hold up our light.”

— Elder Ronald A. Rasband , Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, in the June 2024 Liahona article “ We Are Called To Do Good ”

“Because today we are engaged in a war for the welfare of marriage and the home, in my latest reading of the Book of Mormon I paid particular attention to the ways the Nephites prepared for their battles against the Lamanites. I noted that the people of Nephi ‘were aware of the intent of [their enemy], and therefore they did prepare to meet them’ ( Alma 2:12 ). As I read and studied, I learned that understanding the intent of an enemy is a key prerequisite to effective preparation. We likewise should consider the intent of our enemy in this latter-day war.”

— Elder David A. Bednar , Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, in the June 2006 Liahona article, “ Marriage Is Essential to His Eternal Plan ”

"Alma and Amlici" is by Scott M. Snow.

“The staining influence of Nehor can be seen … when Amlici rises to power, is crowned king by his followers, and wars against Alma and the Nephites. Mormon’s commentary helps us evaluate the lasting impact our attitudes and actions can have on others. He uses the word ‘distinguished’ (see Alma 2:11 ; 3:4 ) while explaining that Amlici’s followers desired so passionately to differentiate themselves from the Nephites that they changed their name to ‘Amlicites’ and ‘marked themselves with red in their foreheads’ ( Alma 3:4 ). …

“When it comes to the generational influence we can have on our family, friends and fellow Saints, we would do well to ponder this question: Will we be distinguished for our dissension, like Nehor and the Amlicites, or will we be distinguished for our discipleship, like Alma and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies?”

— Benjamin Hyrum White, adjunct instructor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University, April 2020 Ensign, “ Nehor’s Narcissism: The Influence of a Popular Renegade ”

“The scriptures describe two types of wisdom: the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God. The wisdom of the world has both a positive and a negative component. In the darkest description, it could be described as a partial truth, mixed with intelligence and manipulation, to achieve selfish or evil purposes.

“An example from the Book of Mormon is the man Amlici. The scriptures say that ‘a certain man, being called Amlici, he being a very cunning man, yea, a wise man as to the wisdom of the world … [drew] away much people after him.’ The scriptures go on to describe Amlici as a ‘wicked man, … [whose] intent [was] to destroy the church of God’ ( Alma 2:1–2, 4 ). We are not interested in this kind of wisdom.

“There is another kind of wisdom of the world that is not nearly so sinister. In fact it is very positive. This wisdom is consciously acquired through study, reflection, observation and hard work. It is very valuable and helpful in the things we do. To good and decent people, it comes as we experience our mortality.”

— Elder Neil L. Andersen , Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, in the January 2013 Ensign article “ Reverence for God Is the Beginning of Wisdom ”

“The Book of Mormon speaks of a time when ‘the people of the church began to be lifted up in the pride of their eyes, and … began to be scornful, one towards another, and … began to persecute those that did not believe according to their own will and pleasure’ ( Alma 4:8 ). Let us all remember that God looketh not upon the color of the jersey or the political party. … Brothers and sisters, in the competitions of life, if we win, let us win with grace. If we lose, let us lose with grace. For if we live with grace toward one another, grace shall be our reward at the last day.”

— Elder Kevin R. Duncan , General Authority Seventy, April 2016 general conference, “ The Healing Ointment of Forgiveness ”

“I will speak first of the deceitfulness of riches. Wherever we are in our spiritual journey — whatever our state of conversion — we are all tempted by this. When attitudes or priorities are fixed on the acquisition, use or possession of property, we call that materialism. So much has been said and written about materialism that little needs to be added here. Those who believe in what has been called the theology of prosperity are suffering from the deceitfulness of riches. The possession of wealth or significant income is not a mark of heavenly favor, and their absence is not evidence of heavenly disfavor. …

“The Book of Mormon tells of a time when the Church of God ‘began to fail in its progress’ ( Alma 4:10 ) because ‘the people of the church began to … set their hearts upon riches and upon the vain things of the world’ ( Alma 4:8 ). Whoever has an abundance of material things is in jeopardy of being spiritually ‘sedated’ by riches and other things of the world.”

— Then-Elder Dallin H. Oaks , April 2015 general conference, “ The Parable of the Sower ”

“As a baptized member of the Church, I hear the invitation, and I wonder, ‘How do I get there from here?’ Because I know the Lord intends to include all of us in this invitation, my personal, honest response is … ‘I’m coming.’ Now, what is my duty? Alma reminded the people of Zarahemla of their duty, ending with the important phrase, ‘Come unto me and bring forth works of righteousness’ ( Alma 5:35 ; see also Alma 4:3 ).”

— Sister Betty Jo N. Jepsen, then the first counselor in the Primary general presidency, October 1992 general conference, “‘ By Way of Invitation’”

“One of the abiding tragedies of Nephite society was its failure to maintain spiritual strength through constant spiritual nourishment. …

“From Alma chapter 4 we read:

“’And thus, in this eighth year of the reign of the judges, there began to be great contentions among the people of the church; yea, there were envyings, and strife, and malice, and persecutions, and pride, even to exceed the pride of those who did not belong to the church of God. …

“’And the wickedness of the church was a great stumbling-block to those who did not belong to the church; and thus the church began to fail in its progress’ ( Alma 4:9–10 ).

“The lesson is clear: if we do not constantly receive the spiritual nourishment needed daily, we will soon — as individuals and societies — be in dire straits, bereft of God’s protection, cut off from the healing influences of the Spirit. Just as one who is weakened by malnutrition soon may fall prey to infectious disease, so, too, will we, if spiritually weakened, be ready prey for the adversary and his legions of dupes and devils.”

— Elder Alexander B. Morrison, then a General Authority Seventy, April 1992 general conference, “ Nourish the Flock of Christ ”

Fantastic views and old Russian architecture, and the church with St.Savva.

This is a very old monastery established by St.Savva in 15th centure, and it was also a fortress and a seasonal residence of Russian tzar and his wife. You will see fantastic views of meadows, hills and forests of the central Russia.

It's one of the places that are part of the "Golden Ring" , it's the closest to Moscow . If you are interested in Russian culture/ history , it's the must! There are many small nice restaurants around, as well as hotels. Magnificent place , very powerful and truly Russian . Unspoiled beauty!

Thrilled to see that the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery already has a such a wealth of positive reviews; I totally concur and will consequently attempt to keep my own comments relatively brief. A peaceful place offering some lovely views out across the surrounding countryside. Especially recommended for long-term Moscow dwellers needing a break from the teeming metropolis. Though other reviewers have already mentioned this, I would be remiss if I omitted to say that as this is a working Russian Orthodox place of worship, some sort of head-scarf is recommended for women. As a man, I feel a somewhat awkward saying that, but it's definitely worth knowing. My only regret about my own visit is that we didn't buy more pastries from the on-site bakery, the ones we did have were truly delicious. I would say take large bags with you and stock up, but I am not sure how the full-time residents of the monastery would feel about me advocating baked-goods-based gluttony!

It's an ancient Church opened not so long ago after closing by Soviets. Must visit to feel Russian people and Russian soul. Do not forget that it's a male monastery so consider to wear long dresses with sleeves.

Quiet, with a wonderful architecture. But, ladies, do not forget that it is not for tourists, so cover heads and legs !

Well restored with well-maintained grounds (lots of flowers in July) with a separate spring easily reachable by drive or walk from the main compound. The buildings are colorful and the churches beautiful. A simple cafe near the spring offers a chance to rest and eat excellent baked goods. Worth the visit.

Church's unique jewelry supports disaster relief

Localish logo

GALVESTON, Texas -- Hurricane Ike caused widespread damage in 2008, including the destruction of a 104-year-old Tiffany stained-glass window at Trinity Episcopal Church .

"The shattered glass was just all over the floor of the church and so during the cleanup right after Ike, folks just came in and put it in big buckets," Reverend Jimmy Abbott said.

Those buckets of glass were put into storage and were forgotten until now.

Karla Mock is a jewelry designer and owner of Mock and More Gallery in Galveston. The church reached out to her to create unique jewelry pieces with the shards of glass.

"This is the first time that I have worked with glass as a material," Mock Said. "I'm not cutting the glass, I'm using it as it broke."

You can purchase the jewelry at her gallery or at the church. A portion of the proceeds go the church's revived Phoenix Project, which raises funds to support communities hit by disasters.

Anna Duggar Lambasted for Post on Trump Verdict

American Sniper

More than 11 years after her Navy SEAL husband, “American Sniper” Chris Kyle, was gunned down and killed at a Texas shooting range, Taya Kyle continues to speak out about her faith and family.

“It was messy,” Kyle said. “There is no fair.”

‘American Sniper’ Widow Shares More of Her Faith 11 Years After Chris’ Murder

Billy Hallowell with CBN News sat down with Taya Kyle 11 years after her husband, Chris, was murdered. On Feb. 2, 2013, Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and his friend, Chat Littlefield, were murdered by a former Marine whom they were trying to help.

“It doesn’t negate that bad things are happening when you’re grateful,” Taya Kyle said. “Things are rough. And, there are things to be grateful for. Both things exist.”

Her kids, Colton (19) and McKenna (18), were interviewed by People Magazine this year. They all remember how Chris’ murder helped them refocus on basic blessings in the midst of profound grief. To this day, they often pray, “Thank you, God, for the roof over our head and the food to eat.”

Kyle and her kids mourned Chris’ murder while the incident was a national news story and talked about everywhere. She shared how her faith was strong even before Chris’ death: “Our faith was intact, but it definitely grew.”

“[My kids’] spiritual maturity and their emotional maturity are far greater than it ever would have been without the loss of Chris and what we went through,” said Kyle.

“The great news is that I believe God prepares us for the things that are going to happen to us later,” Kyle said. “He just does it really lovingly and really gently, so we can’t predict the bad thing that’s coming.”

Soon after Chris’ death, Kyle was trying to figure out how to make a living. While Chris was in the military, Kyle stayed home. She began to take on speaking engagements and took the kids with her. Kyle hired a homeschool teacher to offer flexibility while furthering the kids’ education.

“It was messy,” shared Kyle. She also remembered, as a child, when a 2-year-old cousin died unexpectedly. “There is no fair,” she remembered a family member saying repeatedly.

Inside The Duggar Family's Controversial Religion: Everything To Know About The IBLP

It's currently headquartered in Texas.

Content warning: mention of sexual assault.

The documentary investigates the lengths Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar went to hide this information about their son. It also details the ideologies of the Institute in Basic Life Principles, or IBLP—the family's controversial religion that may have had something to do with these events and other harm.

The Institute in Basic Life Principles is an extremely conservative Christian organization founded by Bill Gothard. The organization describes itself as a "Christian-centered discipleship for individuals and families through events, programs, and teaching resources," but Shiny Happy People reveals the abusive tactics and problematic lessons at its core.

Here's everything to know about the IBLP, the religion followed and promoted by The Duggar family.

What is the IBLP?

The IBLP isn't technically a religion by itself—but rather a Christian-leaning organization. It was founded in 1961, originally as a campus group called "Campus Teams" according to Chicago magazine . Its ideals stemmed from a master's thesis Bill Gothard wrote at Wheaton College in Illinois. Originally, the group focused on helping teens resolve conflicts with their families.

In 1974, the organization was renamed the Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts, and then given its current name in 1989—Institute in Basic Life Principles. The religion detailed exactly how its members should act—down to how women should style their hair. It also created several offshoot organizations and ideologies including Advanced Training Institute, or ATI.

ATI was a biblically-inspired curriculum that integrated Christian teachings into all school subjects. Based on reports in Shiny Happy People , it seemed many IBLP families would substitute an academic education with ATI, but the lessons were far from standardized.

Stream 'Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets'

Stream 'Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets'

In one interview in Shiny Happy People , a former IBLP member said she had only learned up to fractions in math—and her father said that was satisfactory because it's all she needed to bake (women in the IBLP followed very traditional domestic roles). ATI stopped acting as an exclusive education program in 2021, according to its website .

Who is Bill Gothard?

Bill Gothard is the founder and leader of the IBLP. He is currently 88 years old and founded the IBLP shortly after graduating college because he thought his peers "seemed to lack direction in life and were making unwise decisions," per InTouch Weekly .

Gothard situated himself at the top of a hierarchy he created for the IBLP—which was extremely authoritarian, per Chicago magazine. He engaged in countless problematic practices, in addition to the teachings he instilled on members.

iblp bill gothard

Although he had no medical degree, he saw members for counseling and gave objectively poor advice (in a lawsuit against Gothard, one member alleged that he told her not to seek psychological treatment after being raped as a young girl). He also regularly recruited "attractive" young staffers to work closely with him.

In 2014, several women members accused Gothard of sexual harrassment. The organization pursued an internal investigation that same year and he eventually stepped down. IBLP deemed his behavior inappropriate, but not illegal, per Chicago magazine. Several former members filed a lawsuit against Gothard in 2015, but it was dismissed due to statute of limitation issues, according to Yahoo .

Gothard currently resides in La Grange, Illinois, according to tax records obtained by Patch . The IBLP headquarters relocated from Hinsdale, Illinois to Big Sandy, Texas in September 2015, per Chicago magazine.

What rules do the IBLP follow?

IBLP's main gist is that men are subservient to God and women are subservient to men. However, Bill Gothard often inserted himself in the place of God, making himself an almost cult-like leader of the organization, according to Shiny Happy People .

IBLP rules get specific, but most fall under an umbrella of order . The documentary details the discipline invoked on children by their parents (which leans toward emotional and physical abuse). But one former member says that this type of discipline is also expected between husbands and wives, due to the "umbrella" hierarchy.

Most of the IBLP rules fall under this main practice, but they can become extensive. Dancing, rock music (including Christian rock), and even Cabbage Patch Kids dolls are prohibited. Women are required to dress in ways that avert "eye-traps" or anything that could be construed as revealing or sexual to a male gaze—including pants, skirts that hit above the knee, long necklaces, and sleeveless shirts. Television and most books are also prohibited.

Also: Traditional dating is forbidden within the IBLP. As documented on 19 Kids and Counting , members must go through a specific courting process that's mostly orchestrated by the parents of those pursuing a relationship. Courting is defined on the Duggar family website as "a commitment to honor and protect both individuals in the process of getting to know one another." It involves a couple spending time with each individual's families and often refraining from intimacy of any kind until marriage.

Tim Levendusky currently runs the IBLP.

According to its website, Tim Levendusky now runs the organization. He lives in Big Sandy, Texas with his wife and son—and he leads the IBLP Board of Directors with three other men: Gil Bates, David York, and John Bechtle.

The IBLP estimates that more than 2.5 million people have attended its seminars. And because it is split into so many offshoots, it's difficult to ascertain how many members are currently affiliated with the organization.

Not all of the Duggars follow IBLP.

While Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar often preached the teachings of IBLP on their television shows, and continue to do so on their family blog, some of the older Duggar children have broken off from their family's beliefs.

Jinger Vuolo née Duggar recently released an entire memoir, Becoming Free Indeed , about breaking away from IBLP practices. In her book, she compares her older brother, Josh, to Bill Gothard. “My faith is still intact, but it has changed. Instead of leaving the faith entirely, I've been disentangling it," she wrote in her memoir, per PEOPLE .

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Funeral for couple killed in tornado held in same church as their wedding

GREENFIELD, Iowa (KCCI) - An Iowa couple killed by a tornado were memorialized in their church, just feet from the altar where they were married 60 years ago.

Dean and Pam Wiggins, 78 and 77, were laid to rest Friday morning. The couple were among those killed by the EF-4 tornado that leveled the town of Greenfield last Tuesday.

Dr. Keith Schweitzer, the pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, gave the couple’s eulogy, speaking about the high school sweethearts who had been staples in the town for so long. The funeral service was held in the same church they were married in 60 years ago.

Pam and Dean Wiggins, 77 and 78, were killed by a tornado. They are survived by their two...

“If you move 10 feet, this is where they made their pledges as husband and wife,” Schweitzer said.

The Wigginses were celebrated for the life they lived and the lives they touched. They are survived by their two sons, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, according to their obituaries.

Dean Wiggins worked at the local feed companies and Cardinal Glass Company for many years and was famous for his Friday afternoon drives around town — often with his loving wife at his side.

Pam Wiggins was known by many for her service to the community, volunteering at the church, the Adair County Hospital Foundation Board and The Greenfield Chamber, to name just a few.

Schweitzer’s message was simple: even though the storm took their lives, the couple’s impact on their town will be forever present. Their spirit lives on in every good deed neighbors exchange.

“The tornado took their home, but dear friends, listen to me: that tornado could not touch their faith,” Schweitzer said.

In addition to the Wigginses, three people were killed and at least three dozen were injured when a violent tornado blew through southwest Iowa.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

presentation church family faith

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

presentation church family faith

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

presentation church family faith

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

presentation church family faith

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
