    The educational doctorate (EdD) is useful if you are already in the k-12 system and plan on staying there and working your way up the administrative food chain. It has less prestige in general (although an EdD from a good school will have more value than an online PhD).

For example, in student affairs, you won't even get an interview for an entry level job ($30K/year) without a Masters. Experience matters more once you're active in the field.
