Our students study and learn in partnership with faculty at the frontlines of public health research and professional practice. Both onsite and online students have more total opportunities than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic due to our commitment to continuing to offer many hybrid opportunities, both in and outside of the classroom. 

We offer a large mix of synchronous and asynchronous options to ensure that all students—regardless of their chosen format—benefit from a world-class Bloomberg School education and robust opportunities outside the classroom. 

Online students learn as if they were located in Baltimore : taking classes, attending a noon-time seminar, joining a study group to prepare for a final exam, meeting with their advisor, reaching out to a teaching assistant for extra help, participating in a research project or practice activity, connecting with alumni, accessing our career services, and—perhaps most importantly—getting to know faculty and fellow students who will become lifelong colleagues and friends. 

A Rich Catalogue of Online and Virtual Courses 

Our classroom instruction—whether onsite, online, or hybrid—draws on well-established pedagogy and Bloomberg School technology that maximizes faculty and student engagement.  

Many of our courses were previously available online, even before the pandemic hit. These offerings were routinely taken by full-time and part-time degree students and consistently received high marks for quality and accessibility. They offer asynchronous, carefully structured lectures and materials that can be viewed by students when convenient. Additionally, these offerings are supplemented by a limited number of synchronous real-time, “live talk” experiences for engaged learning with faculty and classmates—all delivered via our proprietary CoursePlus learning platform developed by the Bloomberg School and supported by its Center for Teaching and Learning. 

Other courses, using Zoom technology, will stream live from studios on our Baltimore campus that are equipped with upgraded advanced audiovisual equipment, including multiple cameras that can capture the instructor in action—sharing slides, teaching from a whiteboard, or using a document camera. The studios also provide large screens, enabling faculty to engage with students while teaching in real time, delivering a rich “in class” experience for our remote learners. Some of these courses will blend synchronous, real-time instructional experience with pre-recorded asynchronous lectures, which are typically designed to deliver didactic material that can be viewed when convenient. Doing so allows faculty to provide the background for more in-depth and interactive discussion during the real-time, synchronous sessions. 

Outside the Classroom

We offer a full array of opportunities for students and faculty to connect both inside and outside the classroom. These activities, many of which are available online, include: 

  • A robust program of daily seminars and special events 
  • Applied practice activities that bring students to the frontlines of public health 
  • Individual and group mentoring and professional development sessions 
  • Participation in student-led groups and activities 
  • Student research opportunities in collaboration with faculty

Hybrid programs.

The University of Houston currently offers thirteen hybrid degrees. Programs range from an undergraduate degree in retailing and consumer science to a master’s degree in social work. We are committed to helping you reach your goal of completing a degree in a format that meets your needs.

Undergraduate programs are designed to be completed one of two ways: degree completion or whole degree. For the degree completion, students complete the first two years of the degree at another institution and then transfers to UH to complete their upper division courses online. The whole degree option is designed for students to complete their entire degree at UH. Courses can be taken in a mixture of face-to-face, hybrid, and online.

Graduate programs are designed to be completed by students living in regions near UH without needing to take every course on campus. Courses for these programs can be taken in a mixture of face-to-face, hybrid, and online.

Fairleigh Dickinson University offers a dual degree program for students interested in obtaining both a master’s and a doctorate in a field.

Applicants must meet the admissions requirements for the second degree program while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students may choose to study Business Administration, Public Administration, Health Science, Psychology, Public Health, or Pharmacy and Health Science.

George Mason University

George Mason University offers a dual degree program for those interested in receiving a Juris Doctorate and a Master of Business Administration.

The program can usually be completed in 3 years when studying full-time or 4 years when studying part-time. Applicants must submit GMAT or GRE scores and 2 letters of recommendation and may be required to complete an interview when applying.

George Mason University  is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Mercer University

Mercer University offers a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Master of Science in Health Outcomes dual degree program. Applicants must submit a statement of purpose and a resume to apply.

Students in the program are given academic advice from the program director and a graduate advisor to help guide them through their thesis or capstone project. A GPA of 2.75 in the Doctor of Pharmacy courses and 3.0 in Health Outcomes must be maintained to graduate.

Mercer University  is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

National University

National University offers a dual degree for those interested in obtaining both a Master of Arts in Sport Psychology and a Doctor of Clinical Psychology. The program offers both full-time and part-time options and allows students to take the courses for the master’s degree online.

Applicants can apply year round and may have the GRE score requirements waived depending on their GPA. A team of advisors is available to help applicants through each step of the admissions process.

National University  is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission.

New York University

New York University offers a number of dual degree programs for students interested in obtaining either two master’s degrees or a doctorate and a master’s degree.

Applicants must submit additional test scores when applying. Those interested in getting a doctorate and a master’s may get a Juris Doctorate and Master of Business Administration or a Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master of Business Administration.

New York University  is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University’s College of Health Care Science offers a dual degree program for those interested in obtaining Master and Doctor of Health Science degrees.

The program can typically be completed within 7 years. Both programs require students to have a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, GRE scores, and prior health care experience.

Rutgers University

Rutgers University offers a dual degree program for those interested in a Master and a PhD in Social Work. The program can usually be completed in 4 years.

Those interested in the program may apply directly to the program or after their first year of study in the Master of Social Work program. Official transcripts, GRE scores, 2 personal statements, and 3 letters of reference must be submitted when applying.

Widener University

Widener University offers a dual degree program for a Master in Criminal Justice and a Doctor of Psychology.

With more than 60 graduate and undergraduate programs delivered online, Ohio University serves more online students than any other public four-year university in the state. More than 7,500 students from across the country chose Ohio University for their online education.

Our 7 hybrid graduate degree programs are fully accredited and delivered under the leadership of tenured faculty with experience in their field. In addition, Ohio University offers several online undergraduate degrees for those working up to their master's degree, as well as many fully-online master's degrees .

  • Professional Master of Business Administration (PMBA) , online and in-class instruction with once-a-month Saturday residencies on the Dublin campus
  • Master’s in Education Administration with Principal’s License , online and in-class instruction, with monthly meetings September through May and twice-a-week meetings in the summer
  • Master’s in Soccer Coaching Education , online with one five-day in-person residency at the United Soccer Coaches Convention (January)

Family Nurse Practitioner | Doctor of Nursing Practice

Master of science in industrial/organizational psychology.

Master of Business Analytics

Doctor of Business Administration in Finance

Upon completion, this unique program awards a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree with a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certification . This program allows students to earn nursing’s most advanced degree, the DNP, and to embark on a career providing healthcare to families over their lifetimes.

With the aging of the U.S. population, the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) has predicted that, by 2030, the number of physicians will fall 120,000 short of what’s needed to avoid long wait times in both primary and, especially, in specialty care areas. The DNP degree with its FNP certification addresses that shortage, as it trains nurses to deliver healthcare to entire families over their lifetimes.

Today, 22 states allow FNPs full practice autonomy, meaning they do not need supervision from an M.D. or D.O. as they work with families to diagnose, treat, and manage illnesses as well as guiding patients to develop healthful practices.

It’s noteworthy, too, that in 2018, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) reported it would be upgrading their entry-level nurse practitioner education programs from the Masters in Nursing to the DNP by 2025 — lending further importance to this degree program.

Student Outcomes

At Sacred Heart, the DNP program consists of 69 credit hours, which students usually complete over three years, although some students opt to stretch the program to a fourth year. Courses are offered full or part-time and hybrid coursework only requires students to come to campus an average of 6 days per semester.

A BSN degree is required for entry into the program. Upon completion, students will have mastered eight foundational knowledge domains (summarized here)  that give DNPs a far deeper perspective on delivering family healthcare than the MSN degree.

Career Outlook and Professional ROI

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the market for advanced practice RNs, which includes Family Nurse Practitioners, is excellent and will grow 45 percent by 2029 as demand for advanced practice nurses climbs from its current 211,000 to around 322,000. With many jobs idling along at five percent or less annual growth, the DNP degree at 45 percent is a true outlier that bodes extremely well for DNP-prepared job seekers.

DNPs earn on average $42,000 more annually than registered nurses with a BSN degree — $113,930 compared to $71,730 . According to a 2015 Medscape salary report , DNPs also earned more than their MSN-trained colleagues bringing in $9,000 more on average per year.

All of these objectives can be accomplished by using the psychological principles found in the field of industrial/organizational psychology. 

The MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Sacred Heart equips students to help organizations increase efficiency and employee satisfaction using these principles. Students will learn to apply a broad range of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in multicultural and global settings, and engage in and apply evidence-based research in professional settings.

The MS in I/O Psychology at Sacred Heart prepares graduates to engage in evidence-based research and to apply that knowledge, along with a broad range of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary skills, in multicultural and global organizational settings. During an applied project, students will have the opportunity to practice the skills they learn in the classroom, in real-world settings. 

Students can complete this hybrid master’s degree program in one calendar year with our unique cohort-style model. The degree is delivered in a series of six 8-week modules. Students will attend courses in the evenings twice per week, taking two courses per module, and in-course sessions will be supplemented with online work to accelerate completion time.

A master’s degree is generally the minimum requirement for entering professional practice in the field of I/O psychology. While earning an advanced degree will require additional time, effort, and resources, the expected return on this investment is well worth it. In 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the I/O psychology profession would be one of the fastest growing of the next decade , with an impressive 13 percent anticipated growth. 

As of May 2019, the median annual salary is for I/O psychologists was $92,880 , while the top 25 percent of earners made well above six figures. 

Master of Business Analytics

In a 2017 joint report, PWC and Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF) noted that 69 percent of the employers surveyed indicated a preference for job candidates with data science and analytics skills, while only 23 percent of educators surveyed noted they were producing such graduates.

At Sacred Heart our  MS in Business Analytics program offers cutting-edge training in data management through a curriculum grounded in rigorous analytics and applied techniques. This means that our graduates enter the work force equipped with the skills that companies are seeking, making them competitive applicants and valuable additions to a professional team.

SHU’s program is unique because it offers training in PYTHON software, real-world experience through an applied curriculum project, and exposure to Artificial Intelligence software in the AI Lab . This graduate degree is offered in a hybrid format that meets online and on select Saturdays and weeknights. Admission to the program is on a rolling basis and there are multiple start terms throughout the year to accommodate a variety of schedules. 

Throughout this 30-credit Master of Business Analytics program, students will learn from professors with years of real-world, corporate experience.  Students choose from one of three concentrations, Business Analytics, Healthcare Data Analytics and Computer Science Analytics.  During the applied practicum portion of the program, students work to solve an actual problem within a real company, a one-of-a-kind hands on training opportunity. 

Students who graduate from Sacred Heart with a Master's in Business Analytics will be prepared for a wide variety of professional roles including: Analytics Manager, Data Analyst, Data Sciences & Advanced Analysts, Data-Drive Decision Makers, and Functional Analysts. With the skills acquired through this graduate program, students can secure these and many more roles within healthcare companies, professional service companies, defense, security, and technology companies, and more. 

The outlook for business and financial analysts is excellent according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It predicts much faster than average job growth (11 percent) in the field through 2029 with 93,800 new jobs added. The 2019 median pay for analysts hovers at $85,260 nationally. Bottom line? Graduating with your Masters in Business Analytics from Sacred Heart will empower you to quickly land a high-paying job and make significant, data-backed recommendations in your company. 

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Finance

The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Finance degree is a terminal degree. Graduates of the DBA program tend to specialize in areas including finance, economics, financial accounting, and similar fields. Some DBA grads move into education when they wish to teach or to conduct research, adding to the growing body of knowledge surrounding finance and its related fields. For those who wish to enter academia, most universities require a DBA or Ph.D. from its business professors.

This three-year, low-residency hybrid program enables finance and academic professionals to continue working full-time as they earn their degree. 

Students admitted into the DBA in Finance program at Sacred Heart gain competence in advanced analytical software programs for statistical and econometric analysis and learn how to apply advanced models to issues such as risk management, corporate valuation, and related fields. With guidance from faculty experts, students learn to develop and defend scholarly papers and to follow ethical codes and standards that guide professional decision making.

Students with a DBA degree are eligible for many executive management positions. They may have earned the degree to move into a key management slot with their current employer or to seek new employment. Some choose to combine teaching and research to become business professors. Others may aim for jobs in virtually any industry as top executives, financial managers, or management analysts.

Because the DBA degree allows one to choose among many industries and positions, the growth projections, and salaries attainable largely follow the ebb and flow of the overall economy. The outlook for new jobs and wages vary over time and across industries, company size, and position. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projections for DBA graduates offers these median salary levels for a few of the most popular job titles:

  • Business Professors at colleges, universities, and professional schools: $105,440
  • Top Executives: $104,690 with 4 percent growth through 2029
  • Financial Managers: $129,890 with 15 percent or much faster than average job growth in this area
  • Management Analysts: $85,260 with growth projected at 11 percent through 2029

Online / In-person Hybrid Model Offerings

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) offers two fully online graduate degrees:

There has been tremendous growth in online education over the last decade, both in terms of university offerings and student enrollment. According to a study published in 2014 by the Sloan Consortium, approximately 85 percent of schools offer at least some online courses. The U.S. Department of Education reports that in fall 2012 nearly 30 percent of graduate students were taking at least one course online, with more than 20 percent taking all their courses online. This represents an increase of more than one-third in just five years.

Certainly one of the primary draws to online education is the flexibility that it offers. Online learning may also be more cost-effective; many public universities will charge in-state tuition to their online students, regardless of their location.

However, getting a degree online isn't always the right choice. If you are interested in a research-intensive subfield like cognitive psychology or biopsychology, then a fully online degree may not be the best fit. Likewise, a program in a health services psychology subfield frequently requires patient contact hours that may be difficult to meet in a fully online program. 

Also consider whether an online program is the right fit for your learning preferences. Can you stay motivated and on schedule even without weekly class meetings?

There are two main types of online classes:

  • Online courses typically require no face-to-face meetings.
  • Blended/hybrid  courses meet partially in person and partially online. A hybrid degree program may include fully online courses and/or blended/hybrid courses, but would require some face-to-face education as well.

Course content may be delivered in real time (i.e., live-streaming of lectures, participation via video conference) or asynchronously (i.e., prerecorded lectures, independent reading, participation in online discussion boards or blogs). Some online degree programs will also have students come to campus for brief (one week or so) intensive sessions, often in the summer.

The APA Commission on Accreditation currently does not accredit online-only doctoral programs. Some accredited programs may offer online courses or other content via distance education in an adjunctive role. These courses cannot represent a substantial nature of program content and certain classes (e.g., practicum) are not considered appropriate for this instructional method. Any online courses in accredited programs should be noted as such in public materials.

At the doctoral level, the APA Commission on Accreditation reviews programs in clinical, counseling and school psychology, as well as programs that offer education in a combination of these three areas. CoA does not review or accredit bachelor's or master's programs, nor does it review doctoral programs in on-practice subfields. As with any graduate program, carefully consider what your career goals are and evaluate how each program matches with them. When researching graduate programs, there are a few important questions that you should ask to determine which program is best suited for you .

In addition, there are special considerations when researching online graduate programs:

  • Is your school accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation ?
  • What level of access will you have to library resources, academic advisors, career counselors and other campus-based services?
  • How much access will you have to faculty and other department resources?
  • If your program requires a practicum and/or internship experience, will the department assist you in finding an appropriate placement in your community?
  • If your program emphasizes professional practice, will attending an online program cause problems when applying for licensure? (Some states require that your university be regionally accredited in order to apply for licensure.)

As with any school, you should carefully research the level of support you can receive to pay for your education (including tuition remission, research or teaching assistantships, scholarships and financial aid). Usually students who take at least two classes per term are eligible for federal financial aid.

Supported online Master’s degree programs include programs that students can complete entirely online (as in Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Management Science and Engineering), and hybrid programs that combine online courses with courses offered on campus (as in Statistics, Biomedical Informatics, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering).

Design a New Degree Program

Stanford faculty can design hybrid degree programs so that students take some of their coursework online while living or working remotely. For example, a department might:

  • Offer introductory online courses to help students prepare for their on-campus degree program
  • Offer more advanced online courses to be taken following residential on-campus quarters and in parallel to an internship or work activity

Departments offering a hybrid MS degree program may designate a prescribed number of courses that are to be taken online and a schedule by which students will take these courses.

Flexibility and Accessibility

Online and hybrid degree programs offer flexibility and increased accessibility to graduate students as well as to faculty, departments, and the university. They also:

Hybrid graduate programs are fast becoming a popular option, alongside the already in-demand programs taught 100% online or completely in person.

The reasons are myriad: They blend the convenience of attending online classes with traditional instruction, allowing students the flexible learning that caters to both the working professionals hoping to advance their careers with a master’s degree and those who wish to explore a topic in greater depth on their own time.

Sacred Heart University’s graduate-level hybrid degrees deliver exceptional return on investment (ROI). Below is a look at four good examples that offer a healthy balance of classroom learning and hands-on training and online study.

Family Nurse Practitioner-Doctor of Nursing Practice

Given the aging of the U.S. population, the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) , a leading organization that works to improve medical education and health care outcomes, predicts that, by 2034, the number of physicians will have fallen to up to 124,000 short of what’s needed to avoid long wait times in both primary and specialty care areas. The DNP degree with an FNP certification addresses the shortage by training nurses to deliver quality primary health care to entire families over their lifetimes.

SHU’s program allows students to earn a doctoral degree, which includes courses offering a concentration in one of nursing’s most popular advanced practice areas, all in one hybrid program. A hybrid schedule can be key when embarking on this challenging and rewarding career. Today, 27 states allow FNPs to practice with full autonomy, meaning they do not need supervision from an MD or DO as they work with families to diagnose, treat and manage illnesses and guide patients to develop healthful practices.

Students who thrive in this hybrid program will likely work in nonemergency, ambulatory environments, giving them time to build close relationships with their patients and see them throughout their lifetimes. At Sacred Heart, the DNP program consists of 69 credit hours, which students usually complete over three years, although some students opt to stretch the program to a fourth year. Courses are offered full- or part-time, and hybrid coursework only requires students, who must hold a BSN degree and RN licensure, to come to campus an average of six days per semester.

Career Outcomes for FNP-DNP

The job landscape is truly bright for this career path. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 45.7% employment growth for nurse practitioners from now until 2031. The 2022 median pay for nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners was $125,900 , compared to $81,220 for RNs.

Master of Science in Industrial/Organizational Psychology

Over the last decade, many businesses and workplaces have invested significant resources in the policies and procedures that help guide the employee hiring and retention process. Especially with the rise in work-from-home, businesses are eager to keep their employees happy, healthy, satisfied and productive while also fostering employee innovation, a formula for business success.

All these objectives can be accomplished using the psychological principles found in industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology. Sacred Heart’s MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology equips students to help organizations increase efficiency and employee satisfaction using these principles. Students will learn to apply a broad range of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in multicultural and global settings and engage in and apply evidence-based research in professional settings.

Students can complete this hybrid master’s degree program in one calendar year with SHU’s unique cohort-style model. The degree is delivered in a series of six eight-week modules. Students will attend courses in the evenings twice per week, taking two courses per module, with in-course classes supplemented with online work to accelerate completion time.

Career Outcomes for I/O Psychology

A master’s degree is generally the minimum requirement for entering professional practice in the field of I/O psychology. While earning an advanced degree will require additional time, effort and resources, the expected return on this investment is well worth it. U.S. News & World Report named I/O psychology one of its 100 Best Jobs for 2023, noting it pays well, is challenging and offers a solid work-life balance and opportunities for advancement.

Master of Science in Accounting

There’s an unprecedented need for CPAs and skilled accountants with advanced degrees in the U.S., in large part due to the expanding global economy, changing regulations and tighter integration across key business functions.

Launched in the U.S. in January 2024, the new CPA licensure model offers a strong core in accounting, auditing, tax and technology. Each candidate must choose a discipline in which to demonstrate deeper skills and knowledge.

Given the variety of industries that require accountants, Sacred Heart University’s MS in accounting prepares you for a myriad of challenging positions in high-powered organizations. The program offers three concentrations geared to meeting the needs of specific discipline areas of the new CPA model.

  • Business Analysis & Reporting: This track focuses on financial statement accounts, select transactions, not-for-profit and governmental accounting, as well as advanced data analytics.
  • Information Systems & Forensic Accounting: Covering IT and data governance, as well as legal analysis of financial data, you’ll deal with the principles, systems and technology in business processes.

Hybrid Doctoral Program

Hybrid students have the opportunity to blend the richness of being a student at MSU with ongoing opportunities through their current work. Hybrid students live in locations across the United States and around the world, and typically continue their employment while also completing their doctoral studies. Hybrid students are not eligible for guaranteed funding, but may be considered for teaching or research assistantships as available funding allows. 

Hybrid students are encouraged to avail themselves of one or more opportunities to experience the MSU campus environment, by visiting campus at a time that is most beneficial for the advancement of their program goals. This may include attending part or all of a course in person, participating in research with one’s advisor, or taking advantage of other on-campus activities. Hybrid students engage in classroom, research, and social activities alongside their peers in the On-campus mode, who attend in-person on MSU’s campus.  

Hybrid students typically enroll in 1-2 courses (3-6 credit hours) per semester in Fall, Spring, and Summer.

Program Format

The hybrid graduate programs with CPT are designed for F-1 international students who desire work experience while pursuing their studies at Belhaven University. Students who begin their program in January, May, or August will begin with a 14-week hybrid course that includes a required face to face residency one weekend near the beginning of the term with the remainder of the course work done online. In the second half of that term, students will take a 7 week fully online course along with the remainder of their hybrid course. Each term thereafter, students will take a 14-week hybrid course with a required face to face residency scheduled sometime during the term and a 7-week online course. The Doctor of Business Administration will only start new students in January, May, or August.

F-1 international students beginning their MBA or MSITM program in March, June, or October, will begin by taking two 7-week courses at the same time. One will be a hybrid with a required face to face weekend residency and the other will be fully online. Each term thereafter, students will take a 14-week hybrid course with a required face to face residency scheduled sometime during the term and a 7-week online course in the second half of the term.

All F-1 international graduate students are required to attend one weekend residency per term. The schedule of residencies will be published in advance of each term. Students must arrange their own transportation, housing, and meals to attend the residency. Suggested hotels and restaurants can be found on the Visit Us page. Failure to attend a required residency will result in a failing grade for the course and possible deportation for violation of the F-1 student visa.

Curricular Practical raining (CPT) is a program that temporarily allows international students with an F-1 visa to gain practical experience directly related to their major through employment, paid or unpaid internships or cooperative (co-op) education. The hybrid program has a required CPT component. Each student enrolled in the hybrid programs must secure an approved internship or employment and be continuously enrolled in the CPT course each term. The fee for this course is equal to one credit hour of tuition for each respective program.

International graduate students must request CPT in their first semester of enrollment since it is an integral part of the program. If a student is unable to secure off-campus work or an internship, they are not eligible for the hybrid program format. Students can enroll in the same programs in the residential 100% face to face program.

The vast majority of Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degrees must be earned at traditional in-person colleges, universities and professional institutions. But a handful of organizations offer Psy.D. degrees that can be earned through a combination of online learning and in-person experience.

Capella University

Offered mostly online, Capella University’s Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology includes residency, practicum and internship requirements aimed at ensuring graduates are ready to work in the field of clinical psychology. Students also will be required to complete a dissertation as part of their degree track.

California Southern

CalSouthern’s Psy.D. can be completed entirely online if students don’t wish to add an internship year. While it’s not APA-accredited, the program was structured to meet the requirements for licensure in California, so even though it’s accessible to students everywhere, California’s rules were top of mind when the program was designed. A doctoral project is also required, which could come in the form of a dissertation or another research project.

  • Delivery method: Coursework is entirely online, students can opt to add a full-time, one-year internship
  • Total expected tuition: $35,970

Alliant International University

The Alliant International University system is home to several APA-accredited Psy.D. degrees, but its entirely online offering in educational psychology hasn’t yet earned the APA’s seal. Still, the program offered through the California School of Education can be completed entirely online, ideal for students who can’t attend on a full-time basis.

Alaska Pacific University

Alaska Pacific’s relatively new Psy.D. in Counseling Psychology is designed to be completed mostly online, though students will need to attend several three-day weekend intensives, and the program requires a dissertation and internship/practicum experiences. Students based in places other than Alaska may find the in-person commitments a challenge.

Is a Hybrid Program Right for You?

While a program that can be completed partially online is attractive for many, a few considerations are crucial before making your decision, including:

  • Accreditation: None of the schools that offer programs mostly or entirely online are accredited by the American Psychological Association. This is meaningful for those who want to earn professional licensure, as some states do not confer licenses to those who don’t have APA-accredited Psy.D. degrees. Be sure to find out what the rules are in the state where you plan to practice before investing your time and money.
  • Internship: Similarly, every state requires prospective psychologists to have postdoctoral (and usually predoctoral) internship experience, meaning that if the degree can be completed entirely online, it likely will not meet state requirements for supervised professional experience. These requirements range from about 1,500 hours up to 4,000.

  • Kim Lewis and  Slava Epstein , professors of biology, rocked the science world when they discovered a  new antibiotic  that killed bacteria without encountering resistance—and a strategy for identifying  additional microbe killers .
  • Ryan Cordell  and   David Smith,  professors of English and computer and information science, respectively, launched the  Viral Texts Project , which is mining digitized, 19th-century U.S. newspapers and magazines in order to understand why certain stories were so often reprinted, effectively “going viral” across the country and beyond.
  • Octavia Camps and  Mario Sznaler , electrical and computer engineering professors in the  Awareness and Localization of Explosives-Related Threats  (ALERT) lab—a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. The pair have created video surveillance software with promise for improving  airport security .

Preparing students to sit for licensure in many states, Saybrook University's online Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program is specifically focused on the knowledge and practical skills needed to enter professional practice. Students enrolled in this program develop the ability to conduct ethical and effective psychotherapy based on psychological research rooted in multicultural and humanistic-existential psychology. Though not required, students can focus their studies further by using electives to declare certain specializations. There are other specializations from other degree programs that are also open to clinical psychology students. The specializations students can declare include:

Like the M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology degree programs, the clinical psychology degree program is grounded in existential, humanistic, and transpersonal psychology, seeking to apply such principles in all areas for clinical practice and research. More specifically, Saybrook’s clinical program is rooted in humanistic psychology and studies human experience in deeply subjective, historical, contextual, cross-cultural, and spiritual contexts. Each program is designed for graduates to promote health and wholeness as practitioners who are positioned to effect positive change through service and leadership in their chosen clinical field.

Saybrook University’s Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program is regionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) but does not have programmatic accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA). Residential Orientation (RO)

All new students in the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program begin their studies with our one-time, two-day Residential Orientation (RO). ROs are held two days ahead of the Residential Learning Experience (RLE) at the start of the fall and spring semesters in California.

Residential Learning Experience (RLE)

Clinical psychology students participate in two five-day required Saybrook Residential Learning Experiences (RLEs) per year for the duration of the program (one at the beginning of the fall semester and one at the beginning of the spring semester). Students are required to attend the RLEs throughout their degree matriculation to ensure that they acquire ample residential hours required by states for eligibility for licensure.

If a student must miss an RLE due to a documented medical emergency or other approved reason, the student must notify the department chair or associate chair in advance. Students will be expected to make up a missed RLE, which is to be preapproved by the department chair. Failure to meet the residential requirement may delay graduation.

Students intending to earn their license in Washington State are required to attend an additional mid-term RLE held in Washington each term of enrollment. This requirement is due to Washington State expecting more in-person hours than the fall/spring RLEs afford.

To  become a licensed psychologist, candidates must complete the degree program, and coursework required by their chosen state. States also have licensing requirements beyond a program’s graduation requirements that may, depending on the state, include: postdoctoral supervised experience, continuing education credits, examination(s), background check, and application for license.

At the time of publication, the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology hybrid online program meets degree and coursework requirements in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology hybrid online program is aligned with the degree and predoctoral supervised professional experience requirements of the California Board of Psychology for registration and examination eligibility as a Licensed Psychologist (sections 1386 and 1387 of the California Code of Regulations). The program also offers students the opportunity to complete California Board of Psychology licensure-required coursework as specified in sections 1382, 1382.3, 1382.4, 1382.5, and 1382.6 of the California Code of Regulations.

Candidates for licensure in California must pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) examination and the California Psychology Law and Ethics examination (CPLEE), and complete any remaining licensure-required coursework specified in sections 1382, 1382.3, 1382.4, 1382.5, and 1382.6 of the California Code of Regulations. Additional postdoctoral supervised experience is required in adherence with section 1387 of the California Code of Regulations. All candidates are also required to complete the application process, which includes fees and a background check. PSY3045: Supervision in Clinical Psychology

Clinical supervision is a necessary aspect of training for clinicians. Through supervision, a clinician-in-training gains necessary clinical competencies in order to ensure that trainees’ clients receive effective and ethical service. This course critically examines methods, relationships, ethics, multiculturalism, and evaluative processes of clinical supervision. Special focus is given to establishing a meaningful supervisor-supervisee relationship. While students will learn about different theoretical orientations that may inform their supervisory experience, they will be encouraged to consider their role in these relationships from a humanistic standpoint that will foster growth in the supervisor, supervisee, and their clients. They will be asked to explore ways of navigating and growing from supervisory relationships that may be challenging or uncomfortable. In addition, students will be encouraged to reflect on their current progress, as well as goals in their own development as clinicians. Though open to all students, this course satisfies the Clinical Interventions III/IV requirement in the Clinical Psychology degree program, with Clinical Interventions I & II as prerequisites. Note: This course is open to CP students only. (3 credits)

PSY6070: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Applied within a Humanistic and Integrative Approach

This cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) course will offer a review of key foundational theories and concepts, as well as methods of assessing, conceptualizing, and treating patients using CBT approaches. Students will also learn about the efficacy and limitation evidence for utilizing CBT in treating symptoms of several disorders. In addition to learning the key concepts of CBT and practicing core skills, students will examine how CBT can be integrated with humanistic and other integrative therapy approaches. Though open to all students, this course satisfies the Clinical Interventions III/IV requirement in the Clinical Psychology degree program, with Clinical Interventions I & II as prerequisites. (3 credits)

PSY6050: Mindfulness and Spirituality in Clinical Practice

Mindfulness-based therapies are now accepted as “empirically supported” treatments and are often treatments of choice in mainstream clinical and medical settings. In addition, the prior mainstream taboo regarding spiritual and religious dimensions of life in psychotherapy has been supplanted by the publication of a plethora of texts published by the APA and others regarding the integration of these dimensions in clinical practice. This clinical course explores these recent trends that mirror aspects of the long-standing traditions of humanistic, transpersonal, and existential psychology in the integration of mindfulness-based meditation practices, spirituality, and religion and prayer in clinical practice. Through reflective inquiry, students will gain understanding regarding their own experience and views regarding these factors in therapy and how they might locate themselves in relationship to them professionally. Though open to all students, this course also satisfies the Clinical Interventions III and IV requirement in the Clinical Psychology degree program, with Clinical Interventions I & II as prerequisites. (3 credits)

CU Boulder a top 25 engineering program, according to Best Graduate School rankings

CU Boulder is a tier 1 university (“R1") with “very high research activity” as designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The R1 classification includes less than 3 percent of educational institutes in the U.S.

The University of Colorado Boulder is among the top 25 engineering graduate programs in the U.S., according to U.S. News and World Report’s Best Graduate Schools rankings for 2024-25 . 

When compared with its public university peers, the College of Engineering and Applied Science’s graduate program was ranked No. 12. The college was ranked No. 23 overall when compared to both public and private universities, tied with Duke University and the University of Southern California.

Dean Keith Molenaar said he was proud to see CU Engineering programs continue to be recognized by peers and the national media. 

“We are home to leading scholars across disciplines and over 1,000 PhD students. Our rankings reflect our strengths in both established programs like aerospace and in new, growing programs like biomedical engineering,” he said. “We are a comprehensive research college, and that is going to continue to allow our graduates to pursue sustainable solutions to pressing societal challenges.”

All along, the master plan had called for Rachel Varisco, MPH ’20, to one day don the white lab coat, drape a stethoscope over her shoulders and recite the Hippocratic Oath.

“I wanted to be a doctor,” the Pittsburgh native said. “Like a lot of people who intend to pursue careers in healthcare, I always thought I was going to end up as a doctor.”

But two years into her undergraduate studies in Ann Arbor, Varisco took a detour that changed her life, and the countless lives she has impacted in a variety of roles outside of the traditional MD job description.

“I didn’t know that public health was a thing until my junior year at Michigan when I decided pre-med wasn’t the best route for me,” she said, “but I knew I liked helping people.”

Varisco said she started giving serious thought to other avenues of serving people and caring for their overall health after a summer trip to Peru between her freshman and sophomore years at Michigan.

“I got into a program that called for us to work in hospitals, but once I got to Peru and started working with kids, that was when I realized that the work I enjoyed the most was not in the hospital—it was becoming part of the community,” she said.

Varisco spoke some Spanish at the time, but she found that winning people’s trust and being able to help them did not necessarily require complex exchanges in conversation.

“In different ways, with the kids, language was not that essential,” she said. “A smile and kindness worked wonders. And with the adults, as long as you were kind to them and they could see that you were trying and you showed them that you cared, it made a world of difference.” 

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Spanish from the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts in 2016, Varisco went on to earn a Master of Public Health degree in Health Behavior and Health Education from Michigan Public Health . She currently works as a project evaluation manager/community engagement associate at the University of California-Irvine, where she is called on to fill many roles. 

Her primary responsibility is assessing whether it is possible to make systems-level change efforts to support healthcare programs in Orange County with the goal of making them available to everyone, no matter their economic or citizenship status.

“Orange County is very diverse, so I work a lot in the community and use a very community-oriented lens to evaluate these programs,” she said. “It is essential to have the community involved and make sure the community has a voice in what is done and how it is incorporated every day.”

She worked as a health and nutrition coordinator for Pacific Clinics’ Head Start/Early Head Start program before taking on her current role. Varisco was a research assistant in the Child Health and Development Lab while at the University of Michigan, working on creating a reflective practice curriculum for staff who went out to work on lead prevention efforts to help combat staff burnout. It was a program designed to support the mental health of the staff and address the toll that constantly seeing people in need would take on these individuals.

During her time on the Ann Arbor campus, Varisco also assisted with Motherly Intercessions , where she worked with the children of incarcerated mothers, providing social and emotional support along with tutoring. She also interacted with the mothers while they were serving time in jail, holding parenting classes to prepare them for a better relationship with their children upon being released.

Whether the focus is on mental, physical, emotional or behavioral health, Varisco said the foundation is the same.

“Trust is so important,” she said. “It’s the cornerstone of everything we do in healthcare. You might be an expert on the science involved in public health, but that means nothing unless you get the buy-in of the community or individual you are serving by earning their trust.”

Varisco said that throughout her time at Michigan Public Health, she obtained the skills she uses “to be humble, approach people with an open heart and mind, and gain their trust.”

“That way, you can truly help them,” she said. “Without that, the science is obsolete.”

Varisco said that the time she spent in the classroom of Barbara Israel , professor of Health Behavior and Health Education, and working in Israel’s Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center , has had a significant impact on her career.

“The knowledge she has to share with her students about approaching a community with humility—I use that every single day in my work,” Varisco said. “I am committed to fighting against social and health disparities. That is a part of me, and so much of who I am was honed at Michigan.”

I am consistently learning to be more aware of structural biases that contribute to social inequities and racism. And wherever my future career takes me, I am excited to engage in a lifelong commitment of growth, self-reflection and community collaboration.”

She also cited Ken Resnicow , Irwin Rosenstock Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education, and his Health Communications and Motivational Interviewing classes as being especially valuable.

“He helped give me the skills and confidence to humbly and appropriately connect with the community through a human-centered and public health lens,” she said.

Varisco said she is grateful that her education and career track took that undergraduate detour that has allowed her to explore and experience public health in an impactful and rewarding manner. 

“I am consistently learning to be more aware of structural biases that contribute to social inequities and racism,” she said. “And wherever my future career takes me, I am excited to engage in a lifelong commitment of growth, self-reflection and community collaboration.”

Today, U.S. News & World Report ranks three of UCF’s engineering and computer science graduate programs among the top 50 in the nation. The industrial/manufacturing/systems engineering program is ranked No. 43, aerospace is No. 47 and computer engineering is No. 50. Two other programs — materials engineering and electrical/electronic/communications engineering — ranked just outside the top 50, at No. 52 and No. 53 respectively.

A total of nine engineering and computer science programs rank among the top 50 among the nation’s public universities.

“Our outstanding engineering faculty are conducting impactful research that is advancing our knowledge of space , modeling and simulation, virtual and augmented reality, and many other high-tech fields,” says Michael D. Johnson, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “They are innovators and inventors fueling our region’s economy and our society’s quality of life, healthcare , energy and transportation systems , and they excel at preparing our graduates to thrive in their careers.”

Twenty-nine percent of Kennedy Space Center employees and 25% of Lockheed Martin’s Orlando employees earned UCF degrees. Aviation Week Network has named UCF the No. 1 supplier of graduates to the aerospace and defense industry for six consecutive years.

Bringing More Brilliant Minds Together

UCF’s College of Engineering and Computer Science produces 25% of Florida’s engineering and computer science graduates, according to the State University System. The college’s goal is to educate 25,000 engineering and technology students by increasing capacity by 50%.

One important path to achieving that goal is to expand the college’s faculty. Last year and this year combined, the college has hired 55 new faculty members, including many with expertise in the strategic investment program areas identified by the university, such as AI, energy, next-generation computing hardware, space-aerospace, digital twin and infectious diseases. The new faculty hires will further strengthen the college’s research initiatives and opportunities for students to learn alongside talented faculty in the classroom and in research labs.

Plans for this fall also include one new degree program. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will launch a master of science in robotics and autonomous systems program . Students will learn to analyze, design and develop robotics and autonomous systems including self-driving cars, drones, medical robots and even mechanical dogs.

The new faculty and degree program join a host of current UCF engineering and computer science faculty who are conducting groundbreaking research:

  • Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Kareem Ahmed received Department of Defense funding that’s establishing UCF as a leader in hypersonics and space propulsion research. Hypersonic propulsion would allow for air travel at speeds of Mach 6 to 17, or more than 4,600 to 13,000 miles per hour, and has applications in commercial and space travel.
  • Sudipta Seal, chair of materials science and engineering, and Ozlem Garibay, assistant professor in industrial engineering and management systems, have created an Al-based prediction method that helps develop life-saving medicines and treatments for various diseases with up to 97% accuracy.
  • Tarek Elgohary, an associate professor of aerospace engineering, is developing algorithms that will accurately track space objects like asteroids and satellites so they don’t collide with spacecraft. It’s a vital tool given the rapid growth of space junk in cislunar space, which stretches from Earth to just beyond the moon’s orbit.
  • Carolina Cruz-Neira, the Agere Chair Professor at the UCF Department of Computer Science and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, is a pioneer in the areas of virtual reality and interactive visualization, having created and deployed a variety of technologies that have become standard tools in industry, government and academia. In a few weeks, she will be inducted into the inaugural Augmented World Expo (AWE) XR Hall of Fame , joining an elite international group of 100 researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, advocates and others. Cruz-Neira was one of just 22 researchers selected. “It is not well known that UCF has one of, if not the, largest concentration of VR researchers in the U.S.,” she says. “Of course, the strong reputation of UCF as a leader in modeling and simulation ties very well with the ecosystem.”

In addition, the internationally recognized Collegiate Cyber Defense Club at UCF won first place at the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in April. The club has been sending student teams around the world to compete against other universities since 2013. In all, UCF cybersecurity teams have earned 87 first place awards — including five NCCDC titles — 29 second-place and 25 third-place awards. The competitions allow UCF students to sharpen their skills before cybersecurity professionals and are hosted by companies from private industry, such as IBM, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Raymond James, Raytheon and several federal agencies.

U.S. News and Word Report has again placed MIT’s graduate program in engineering at the top of its annual rankings, released today. The Institute has held the No. 1 spot since 1990, when the magazine first ranked such programs.

The MIT Sloan School of Management also placed highly, in rankings announced April 9. It occupies the No. 5 spot for the best graduate business programs. 

Among individual engineering disciplines, MIT placed first in six areas: aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering (tied with Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley), electrical/electronic/communications engineering, materials engineering, and mechanical engineering. It placed second in biomedical engineering/bioengineering (tied with Duke University, Georgia Tech, and Stanford) and nuclear engineering.

In the rankings of individual MBA specialties, MIT placed first in four areas: business analytics, information systems, production/operations, and project management (tied with Carnegie Mellon University). It placed second in supply chain/logistics.

U.S. News bases its rankings of graduate schools of engineering and business on two types of data: reputational surveys of deans and other academic officials, and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research, and students. The magazine’s less-frequent rankings of graduate programs in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities are based solely on reputational surveys. Among the 12 peer-review disciplines ranked this year, MIT placed first in computer science.
