Essay on Honesty is the Best Policy

Every human being must learn to be honest. Honesty means truth. If a person wants to be honest, he must learn to speak the truth in life. Moreover, by being honest, a person will develop a strong moral character, learn good behavior, maintain discipline, follow the rules and regulations intelligently, and will always be punctual.

Every child must have learned the phrase ‘honesty is the best policy.’ Children learn honesty from their parents, elders, and teachers. Still, people prefer to tell lies for their benefit Since the incidence of deceitful behavior is on a high, the revival of the teachings of honesty is necessary.

Benefits of Honesty

There are several benefits of honesty. Honesty helps in the development of morally strong characters. If you are honest, you will not be afraid of anything. You do not have to think about making false stories and then the fear of repeating the same in exact words. If you are honest, you do not have to remember any false stories. People will trust you more. An honest person will also develop discipline. An honest person will be extremely content, know what to do from time to time, and will not take any pressure or tension about anything. The health will improve, and the mind will be at peace. The person will be very punctual and will complete all tasks on time. Since more people will trust an honest person, he or she will find more friends and will be supported all around. An honest person will not be involved in cheating, lying, lack of trust, greed, stealing, and any other immoral acts.

Honesty promotes authenticity. It is a reflection of the thoughts and feelings of a person. It is a form of self-expression, and if a person is honest, people will know what he or she truly is. It also makes the person confident. To speak the truth, it needs a lot of courage and confidence. Only a coward will tell lies because he or she is afraid of the truth. Speaking the truth is an act of bravery. Telling lies also shows that the person is low on self-confidence.

Honesty brings maturity. An honest person speaks the truth in a mature, non-hurtful manner. Therefore, the person does not hurt others, and therefore, his or her relationship with others remains good. Such a good relationship develops a connection between people. Such good relationships also give you peace of mind. Therefore honesty brings high-quality and trustworthy friendships to a person.

Honesty makes a person feel free. They do not have to keep any secrets. They know what is right, and will speak it naturally. They do not have to take the tension of making a false story and say it, in the same manner, every time. Honesty keeps troubles away from a person.

How to Prevent Oneself from Lying?

People generally lie to avoid getting into trouble and to prevent hurting others. Honest people always have faith in the people whom they are talking to. It is wrong to assume that the listener will reject the truth. To be honest, people must have the courage to say the truth. No one likes to be lied to, and therefore, it is wrong to lie to others. People also have to be diplomatic in their presentation of the truth. They must not be blunt or rude, as it might hurt others. In this way, the true message reaches the listeners, and they take it in without getting emotionally hurt.

Is it okay to be Dishonest at Times

You were undoubtedly trained never to lie by your parents, who preached the importance of telling the truth. Your partner states that the most important thing is, to be honest.

But, according to studies, people do a lot of things wrong when it comes to deceit, truth-telling, and trust, and that, if mastered, lying the right way may actually help develop relationships, trust, and businesses.

You are also more likely to be lied to (and told to lie) than you realize imagine your mother telling you to tell your grandmother how much you enjoyed her food, or you providing incomplete feedback to a coworker.

LYING CAN BE JUSTIFIED IN THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS

If you are Looking out for Someone's Best Interests:

There are many examples of lying being harmful, and the most harmful lies are those that promote your self-interest at the expense of others.

According to a study, "prosocial" lies—falsehoods intended to benefit others—can help people create trust.

Just keep in mind that lies are most effective when they are not self-serving. It is one thing to tell your friend he or she looks beautiful before a date to boost their self-esteem. However, be warned, saying it solely to push your friend out of the door because you are already late - that might drive you into a selfish zone.

If There is Not Enough Time to Make a Modification:

Let's say your mate inquires about how you think he or she looks shortly before coming on stage for a speaking engagement, or just before reaching the podium, about what you think of the speech. Consider whether the person has the time to react to the information and control the issue, even if you see a stain on his or her dress or think the speech may be improved.

You might accept deception if there is nothing your partner can do to improve or change things right now. As there is nothing he or she can do at the time, lying in this sense is typically comprehended as something which is benefiting the person at the receiving end.

If your significant other can react to the knowledge, however, honesty is the superior option.

If the Person is Not Close to you:

Deception that is mild and well-intentioned can be even more effective in long-distance relationships. Honesty is a lot more perilous in more competitive equations or first interactions, and it can damage relationships and reduce the amount of trust. That is because neither party knows the other's genuine motives, and they may ask aloud, "Is this individual trying to undermine me?"

Still, if you're inclined to provide candid comments to a distant acquaintance or a buddy of a friend, go ahead. Providing the truth while being benevolent—something along the lines of, "I truly want you to succeed, so I am giving you this feedback."

Close friendships, on the other hand, can foster a greater appreciation for candor, and confessing to friends is probably not as horrible as you think. We consistently underestimate how difficult it will be, to tell the truth.

Writing an essay increases your ability to use words, syllables, and style in a way that is useful in everyday life.

5. How does reading improve writing?

Reading aids in the development of critical thinking abilities: "Am I reading good writing?" question yourself as you read. "And if that's the case, why?" Determine who the good authors are, and seek amazing novels that will inspire you. More importantly, evaluate why you think your favorite books are outstanding. Is it the growth of the characters? What is the author's approach to theme and subtext? You will also be able to bring a similar consideration to your work if you can critically evaluate a piece of literature and discern what makes good writing good.

Reading gives you exposure to a wide range of writing styles: Reading a variety of book styles can help you concentrate on the mechanical and stylistic decisions that allow different genres of writing to work. Making an approach towards a variety of works of literature with an eye toward the authors' stylistic tendencies will aid you in developing your own. The maxim, “Honesty is the best policy,” encapsulates the profound significance that honesty holds in our lives. This essay explores the depth and breadth of this timeless adage, delving into its implications for personal growth, social relationships, and societal progress.

The Personal Sphere: Honesty as Self-Realization

At an individual level, honesty is a cornerstone of character development and self-realization. It promotes authenticity, allowing one to stay true to their own beliefs, values, and aspirations. When we are honest, we confront our weaknesses and acknowledge our strengths, fostering self-awareness and personal growth. It also instills a sense of responsibility, as honesty often requires courage to face the truth and accept its consequences.

The Social Sphere: Honesty as a Pillar of Trust

In the realm of social relationships, honesty is the bedrock of trust and mutual respect. It fosters open communication, reduces misunderstanding, and strengthens bonds. This, in turn, fosters public trust in institutions, encouraging citizen participation and contributing to societal progress.

Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite the evident benefits of honesty, practicing it consistently can be challenging. The lure of short-term gains, fear of negative consequences, or societal pressures can often lead individuals to stray from the path of honesty. However, it is crucial to remember that the benefits of honesty are long-term and far-reaching, outweighing any temporary advantages gained from dishonesty.

Education plays a significant role in promoting honesty. By inculcating values of truthfulness and integrity from an early age, we can foster a culture of honesty. Furthermore, creating environments that reward honesty and discourage dishonesty, both at an institutional and societal level, can encourage individuals to follow the path of truth.

In conclusion, “Honesty is the best policy” is not just an adage, but a guiding principle that can lead to personal growth, enrich social relationships, and foster societal progress. This builds trust and respect between you and your educators, creating a positive learning environment for everyone.

Paragraph on Honesty is the core foundation for academic success in India, just like the strong pillars that support our historical monuments. Copying notes or answers might seem like a quick solution, but it’s like building your academic journey on sand. In our schools, honesty means being truthful in all our actions, whether it’s completing assignments, taking tests, or interacting with teachers and peers. When students are honest, they build trust and integrity, essential qualities for success in academics and life.

In the Indian education system, there is immense pressure to excel academically, often leading students to resort to dishonest means such as cheating or plagiarism. However, it’s essential to understand that dishonesty may provide short-term gains but can lead to long-term consequences. By being honest, students not only uphold their integrity but also foster a culture of fairness and respect in the academic environment.

Moreover, honesty cultivates a growth mindset, where students embrace challenges and learn from their mistakes rather than resorting to deceitful practices to avoid failure. It also promotes accountability, as honest individuals take responsibility for their actions and strive to improve continuously.

Furthermore, in a highly competitive society like India, where academic achievements are highly valued, honest individuals stand out as role models who inspire trust and admiration. They demonstrate that success attained through integrity is far more fulfilling and sustainable than success achieved through dishonest means.

In conclusion, honesty is indeed the best policy in academic pursuits within the Indian context. It not only fosters trust and integrity but also promotes a growth mindset, accountability, and ethical behavior. Students who uphold honesty in their academic endeavors lay the foundation for a successful and fulfilling future.

It is noticed that often simple topics that we have been hearing and writing about for many years are the ones that become the most difficult to write. One such topic is   'Honesty is the Best Policy' IELTS essay. Here is how you can write an engaging and advanced essay on it.

Table of Contents

Honesty is the best policy essay: sample 1, essay on honesty is the best policy: sample 2, more essays samples to explore:.

The origin of this proverb  honesty is the best policy can be attributed to Sir Edwin Sandys. He was an official of Virginia Company who had used the phrase in one of his writings in the 1500s. It is an irrefutable fact that modernization and evolution are all by-products of universal progression. Moreover, honesty, which was very common in ancient times, is now as rare as hens’ teeth. In consonance with this, it can be easily apprehended that the breakthrough has not only encouraged external evolutions but has also blazingly impacted the consciences of beings.

The rareness of honesty cannot modify its ultimate consequence- actualizing an ethical character. Nature functions on the mechanism of giving and taking. Every development does have a cost, as the progression of technology leads to more cyber crimes. Universal progression has not only evolved individuals in terms of lifestyles but has also affected their mindsets and the basic values being rendered to them. The traits which were seen as unlikely earlier, like greed, dishonesty, etc., are now predominant.

Selfishness is the trait that has turned ways around even for honest personalities. It has become complex to understand the fact that honesty is ideally engraved, even if you are selfish. It is time to perceive how being honest will make your life full of grace, gratitude, and gratefulness. Keep the 3G's handy by being honest.

Salient benefits of preaching honesty:

  • Builds an established and didactic character,
  • Augments the persona of a “credible” person,
  • Attracts quality acquaintances rather than quantity,
  • Backs in being more prudent and disciplined,
  • Guides to be accountable for own, etc.

The ways for showcasing honesty can be tweaked, but in the long run, honesty must be practiced as a sole medium of paving the way through.

The essay topic is a resurgence of the old proverb reminding me what honesty means and what ceaseless good it brings. To me, honesty lies in everything that does not pinch my conscience. I feel it is cosmic and empowers individuals to build a bright future.

From the teachings of the past to the subsequent action, honesty was prevalent. It is for this reason that, as a child, I never experienced or witnessed the consequence of delinquency. Being true was colossal, and another way round was nefarious. Moral science was a perpetual life skill and, surprisingly, never seemed boring. I felt pride in speaking the truth, even when I got no rewards.

As opposed to that, kind, fragile, loving, gentle, honest, and likes of these emotions are weak words in the epoch that relies on quantification. Today, fastidiousness and other capricious ways, such as an over-exposure to the internet and the quantity of 'followers', have become the marshal fact to kindle happiness. Just like 'life' today is replaced with 'trend', the word 'Honesty' is often interchangeably used with expedience, making 'honesty is the best policy' no more than an obsolete idiom.

Honesty can be of many types and is used subjectively. Any modification that is untrue can be categorized as dishonesty. For example, using filters for online dating is also a form of cheating as you are not showing your real self; although, people don't find using the tiara or flowers as filters dishonest. Hence the word 'expedience' is more apt than using 'Honesty'. At the same time, a dog showering love on its caretaker is an honest embodiment.

Honesty reflects prudence, the integrity of character, and morality. And if what you are doing shows any of these, you have thought back for good!

To make it simpler, we often judge the individual to be honest if he practices speaking truth.  If you are honest enough, you bear a sense of confidence and a positive aspect of your life.

A person who possesses honesty in his/her life possesses an ethical way of living life. An honest person shows good behaviour, he always follows rules and regulations, maintains discipline, is always punctual, and speaks the truth.

In short, an honest person is trustworthy as he always follows the right path and believes in speaking truth.

To make Honesty applicable in our life. We often say, “honesty is the best policy”. It is a wise phrase. Probably, every child learns this teaching from their parents. To an extent, making life full of ethical nature is the parent’s role. This beautiful teaching has been though since the time being immortal. However, its practice has certainly fallen short. Nowadays, People lies very frequently. Furthermore, there is a lot of things that are completely involved in corruption these days.

People deceive each other by being dishonest. Therefore, there is an urgent need to face the mirror of life.

Benefits of Honesty is the best policy

A famous quote as given by great personality is, “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom”. It holds to be a positive and good feature due to its ability to build, motivate, and shape integral values in our life.

To develop moral components within us, we need to look for some important aspects of life, and Honesty is one among those. Honesty helps to develop positive attributes like truthfulness, discipline, moral integrity, kindness, and much more.

If we talk about the elimination part, we should be focused to overcome the lack of trust, steal, lying, cheating, greed, and some other important attributes. These aspects have no place when we talk about Honesty or being Honest.

  • Honest people are sincere, loyal, and trustworthy throughout their life. Honesty is valuable and is a habit of utmost importance.
  • Honesty promotes Authenticity. If you are honest, you will reflect on one’s feelings and thoughts. Certainly, honesty helps in knowing who you are. Therefore, one must be honest in self – expression.
  • To speak trust, a person requires a lot of courage. However, to fake out a lie, all you need is a jumble of words. This shows the difference and the courage one has to reveal to lead a part of Honesty.
  • Honesty removes fear from the Heart. It makes people confident and courageous. Speaking truth is a part of bravery. The one who lies is a coward. Also, speaking falsehood is a sign of low self – confidence.
  • Another feature to highlight is Maturity. Honesty certainly reflects the maturity of a person. An individual’s personality reflects positive signs if he practices honesty. Also, if you are mature enough, you will speak the trust without even hurting the feelings of others.
  • The discussion could not end if we forget about our self – peace i.e. the peace of mind. Being honest makes you feel free. An honest person reflects light-headed feelings. The reason is that he is not stuck in the stress and tensions of lying. Moreover, he does not have to deal with keeping secrets. All this feels makes him more relaxing.
  • Additionally, an individual’s reputation is also attached to the power of being Honest. He enhances his reputation and status in society if he practices honesty. Everyone seems to be fond of such an honest person. Also, it is very easy for an honest person to generate trust with other people.
  • Honesty keeps all the troubles away. A lie can provide some sort of temporary relief for an individual but in the long run, this is going to be his own fatal. Lies pull a person into more and more trouble. It even makes a person more habitual of being a liar. He/she continuously engages in speaking lies. One lie can lead to a hundred more lies.

Therefore, one must be truthful from the beginning. All this means is that one must stay honest in every situation that crosses the way.

Being honest will certainly result in high – quality friends. Also, with the high – quality you might even get to enjoy a long-lasting friendship with those who deserve. This friendship will be very close and strong which involves such individuals.

How to Avoid lying?

To stop lying is a tough path if you are a chronic liar. But it is not an impossible task. Although this will result in long-lasting fruitful results. One must not assume that others will not accept the truth.

Gather up your courage. This will help you to speak what you wish to and, in the end, you will end up saying all that is true. Though it requires courage but is certainly good. It is not the job of a faint-hearted person.

Try to think the other way. Do you wish to be lied? No, if you don’t consider this for yourself, how can you apply it for others. Assuming this way will structure you as being a remote thinker.

Before speaking the truth, always try to structure your words. Furthermore, always ensure not to speak rude or blunt.

The fact that honesty is a tough path in today’s world is completely acceptable. But keeping in mind the positive sides of Honesty, we must mould ourselves.

Honesty is the best policy, is of significant importance. In this dark word, Honesty is the light of hope.

To make honesty a practice, try to find situations where you can prove yourself of being honest. In some attempts, you might think of dropping the plan but sooner or later, you will enjoy the circumstances. Honesty is the power that prevails in the mind and soul of a person.

Therefore, honesty must prevail while the falsehood must be perished.

Honesty is the best policy – Essay 2

Honesty is a deserving praise for anyone in any walk of life. Dishonesty may bring instant success, but in the long run it will only bring disaster.

Indeed, honesty is the best policy. An honest person is admired and respected by others. Other people know that they can trust him or her and that he or she is a dependable and reliable person.

They know that even if they do something wrong, he or she will own up to it. He or she will never try to make excuses, blame others or tell lies.

When a person tells lies often, very soon, people realize that he or she is a terrible liar. They avoid him or her, and know that he or she is not to be trusted. They do not believe anything that he or she says, for it could be a lie.

People have no respect for such a person. Gandhiji always spoke the truth, even if he knew that he would be punished for what he said.

The guiding principles of his entire life were truth and ahimsa, and he taught this to everyone. Today he is revered and admired all over the world.

So it is up to us to decide which path we wish to take: the path of righteousness and honesty or the path of slyness and dishonesty.

Speaking truth is often difficult in many circumstances, but truth remains long lasting, a person is identified by his/her deeds.

What make a person remembered? His deeds, that how he/she was. It is human tendency to speak lies, but you often avoid speaking lies.

If a person catch you speaking lie, then he will never believe on you, truth as its own power, even sometimes you spoke lie, then also they will believe on you, because they knew that you speaks truth only.

Speaking Truth has a different impact.  It is better that you should follow, the famous proverb saying words, that “Honesty is the best policy” and it cannot be avoided.

Story on Honesty is the Best policy

We all have read a story about the woodcutter and mercury in school life.  The story was that, one day a woodcutter’s axe accidentally fell into a river. The river at the spot was deep and its current was swift.

The woodcutter tried hard but he could not find his axe. He was very sad. Mercury, the messenger of god, saw the sad woodcutter and took pity on him.

Don’t worry. I will bring you your axe, said Mercury to the wood cutter and dived into the river. Mercury came out of the river with an axe of gold and offered it to the woodcutter. The woodcutter said, “That is not mine. I can’t take it.”

Once again Mercury went down into the river and this time returned with an axe made of pure silver. The honest woodcutter said, “That is not my axe either.”

So Mercury dived into the river a third time. This time he brought with him a crude axe made of iron.

“That’s it,” cried the woodcutter joyfully and rushed to Mercury to take it.

Mercury was pleased with the poor man’s honesty. He gave him both the gold axe and the silver axe as a reward for his honesty.

  • 10 Lines on ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’ for Children
  • Short Essay on ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’

Long Essay on ‘Honesty Is The Best Policy’

What will your child learn by writing an essay on ‘honesty is the best policy’.

Honesty is an admired virtue. Parents and teachers both work towards instilling this quality in kids early on. When kids learn to be honest from a young age, they grow up to become honest adults. Therefore, they are taught that honesty is the best policy. Children are encouraged to always tell the truth, even if they have done something wrong, like skipping homework or breaking something. It makes them learn the value of speaking the truth, following rules and taking responsibility. It also ensures they learn from their mistakes and don’t repeat them. To teach children the value of honesty in school, they are asked to write an essay on ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’. As they write on the subject of honesty, they develop a better understanding of this value, while building a strong moral character.

‘Honesty is the Best Policy’ is a popular essay topic for classwork and exams for children of lower primary classes. Here are some key points to guide them in writing a good essay on this subject:

  • Start by describing what is honesty
  • Explain why it is important for people to be honest
  • Write why everyone likes honest people
  • Write the benefits of honesty

10 Lines on ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’ for Children

Young kids may find it difficult to compose an essay on a given topic. Let’s make it easier for them with this simple technique. Ask them to start by jotting down simple sentences, and then connecting them into paragraphs.

  • ‘Honesty is the best policy’ is a popular English proverb.
  • It teaches the virtue of being sincere and truthful.
  • The meaning of this phrase is that even if lying is a more convenient alternative, speaking the truth is always the better option.
  • The proverb emphasises the significance of authenticity and integrity in one’s life.
  • An honest person is always more courageous and self-assured than a dishonest individual.
  • A dishonest individual is constantly afraid of the truth being revealed, so they can never be at ease.
  • An honest person tends to have deeper and healthier relationships with those around them.
  • In society, honesty is always highly regarded and respected.
  • It is a reflection of a person’s strong personality and good upbringing.
  • Honesty is a virtuous quality taught at home by family members and at school by teachers.

Short Essay on ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’

Honesty is an important virtue to teach children. However, teaching them to write an essay on the topic could be difficult. When young kids of lower primary classes are asked to write this essay, this sample will help them learn and write well on their own.

Being honest with people in one’s life is the best policy. Being truthful and sincere allows others to have complete faith in us and see our true character. It helps us win their confidence and makes us trustworthy. It also helps us develop stronger relationships with our family and friends. Dishonest people have weaker relationships because people don’t trust their words and actions. Their friends and family think they may be lying to them and are always mistrustful of them. Like a strong foundation, honesty is a trait that upholds the honest person in their own eyes and others. Honest people always are respected and trusted wherever they go. It is advantageous in their work and social life. Without any extra effort, honest people have many benefits. Even one small lie can destroy a good relationship. So always remember, being honest is the best for strong and trustful relationships.

Students of class 3 are asked to write a long essay on the topic ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’. It teaches young kids to be truthful, understand the value of honesty and imbibe it in their character. Here is a long paragraph on ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’ in English for kids:

According to the popular phrase, honesty is the best policy. Being truthful allows us to gain the trust of those in our lives or those close to us like our friends, classmates and teachers. Honesty is not simply telling the truth but also caring for and honouring people’s feelings. We should respect everyone regardless of age, position or abilities. We will never gain someone’s trust if we lie to them, and we will have difficulties in our relationships with them. We might lose their faith in us indefinitely because it is difficult to regain trust once lost. Honest people are respected in every field, whether in their workplace, school, college, family or society at large.

Dishonest people, on the other hand, are not respected or trusted anywhere. Once people know you lie, they will mistrust everything you say or do. Even in places such as schools, students and teachers tend to trust truthful students. Students, who lie face difficulties in their school lives. As they grow up and start working, they continue to face these difficulties. In society, too, honest people enjoy the trust and respect of all.

Honesty is an admired virtue in every aspect of life. Be it in one’s personal life or work life, trust is the foundation on which all relationships are built. Being sincere and truthful develops trust, and once trust is established, the relationship becomes stronger.

Everyone assumes others are just like them. So an honest person will assume others too are honest and will respect them. Likewise, a dishonest person will always doubt others and will not respect them. Other people too, in turn, will not respect or trust them. Being honest relieves you of the burden to impress others by pretending to be someone else. It helps you impress people with your sincerity. In contrast, dishonest people always put up an act and make efforts to be able to impress others. Honesty indeed earns you respect and ensures you are at peace with yourself and others, and are happy.

By writing a composition on honesty, your child will improve their English language and learn the importance of honesty as a virtue. Essay writing improves the linguistic skills of the students. They learn to form meaningful sentences, improve their grammar and vocabulary and write sequentially. Their imagination and creativity are enriched as they write an essay on honesty in English. They learn to convey their emotions and thoughts on the topic. Therefore teachers make students practice composing essays. Writing on ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’ is a great way for students of classes 1, 2, and 3 to learn about this virtue and aspire to be honest.

Through these sample essays on honesty, your child will learn to write both long and short paragraphs. They will also learn about honesty and how it makes one a better person.

The Morning

The side effects of covid vaccines.

Thousands of Americans have filed vaccine-injury claims with the federal government.

A portrait of Mr. Barcavage, whose eyes appear to be welling with tears.

By David Leonhardt

Let me start with a disclaimer: The subject of today’s newsletter will make some readers uncomfortable. It makes me a little uncomfortable.

The Times has just published an article about Americans who believe they suffered serious side effects from a Covid vaccine. More than 13,000 of them have filed vaccine-injury claims with the federal government.

My colleague Apoorva Mandavilli tells some of their stories in the article , including those of several people who work in medicine and science:

Ilka Warshawsky, a 58-year-old pathologist, said she lost all hearing in her right ear shortly after receiving a Covid booster shot.

Dr. Gregory Poland, 68 — no less than the editor in chief of Vaccine, a scientific journal — said that a loud whooshing sound in his ears had accompanied every moment since his first Covid shot.

Shaun Barcavage, 54, a nurse practitioner in New York City, has experienced a ringing sound in his ears, a racing heart and pain in his eyes, mouth and genitals for more than three years. “I can’t get the government to help me,” Barcavage said. “I am told I’m not real.”

This subject is uncomfortable because it feeds into false stories about the Covid vaccines that many Americans have come to believe — namely, that the vaccines are ineffective or have side effects that exceed their benefits. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent presidential candidate, has promoted these stories, as have some Republican politicians and conservative media figures. “The scale of misinformation,” Dr. Joshua Sharfstein of Johns Hopkins University told Apoorva, “is staggering.”

So let me be clear: The benefits of the Covid vaccines have far outweighed the downsides, according to a voluminous amount of data and scientific studies from around the world. In the U.S. alone, the vaccines have saved at least several hundred thousand lives and perhaps more than one million , studies estimate. Rates of death, hospitalization and serious illness have all been much higher among the unvaccinated than the vaccinated.

Here is data from the C.D.C., in a chart by my colleague Ashley Wu:

Average weekly Covid deaths per 100,000 in the U.S.

From the weeks of Oct. 1, 2022 to April 1, 2023

Not only are the vaccines’ benefits enormous, but the true toll of the side effects may be lower than the perceived toll: Experts told Apoorva that some people who believe Covid vaccines have harmed them are probably wrong about the cause of their problems.

How so? Human beings suffer mysterious medical ailments all the time. If you happened to begin experiencing one in the weeks after receiving a vaccine, you might blame the shot, too, even if it were a coincidence. So far, federal officials have approved less than 2 percent of the Covid vaccine injury-compensation claims they have reviewed.

Still, some ailments almost certainly do stem from the vaccines. The C.D.C. says some people are allergic (as is the case with any vaccine). Both the C.D.C. and researchers in Israel — which has better medical tracking than the U.S. — have concluded that the vaccines contributed to heart inflammation, especially in young men and boys. Officials in Hong Kong — another place with good health care data — have concluded that the vaccines caused severe shingles in about seven vaccine recipients per million.

Honesty and trust

These side effects are worthy of attention for two main reasons.

First, people who are suffering deserve recognition — and the lack of it can be infuriating. Dr. Janet Woodcock, a former F.D.A. commissioner, told The Times that she regretted not doing more to respond to people who blame the vaccines for harming them while she was in office. “I believe their suffering should be acknowledged, that they have real problems, and they should be taken seriously,” Woodcock said.

The second reason is that public health depends on public trust, and public trust in turn depends on honesty. During the pandemic, as I’ve written in the past, government officials and academic experts sometimes made the mistake of deciding that Americans couldn’t handle the truth.

Instead, experts emphasized evidence that was convenient to their recommendations and buried inconvenient facts. They exaggerated the risk of outdoor Covid transmission , the virus’s danger to children and the benefits of mask mandates , among other things. The goal may have been admirable — fighting a deadly virus — but the strategy backfired. Many people ended up confused, wondering what the truth was.

The overall picture

Here’s my best attempt to summarize the full truth about the Covid vaccines:

They are overwhelmingly safe and effective. They have saved millions of lives and prevented untold misery around the world. They’re so valuable that elderly people and those with underlying health conditions should be vigilant about getting booster shots when they’re eligible. For most children, on the other hand, booster shots seem to have only modest benefits, which is why many countries don’t recommend them .

And, yes, a small fraction of people will experience significant side effects from the vaccines. Eventually, scientific research may be able to better understand and reduce those side effects — which is more reason to pay attention to them.

Overall, Covid vaccines are probably the most beneficial medical breakthrough in years, if not decades.

I encourage you to read Apoorva’s article .

A new story by Ben Sisario, The Times’s music industry reporter, explores the surprisingly complicated answer to what seems to be a simple question: What is a song?
