Dhoomam Review: Fahadh Faasil Film Leaves You Unsatisfied When the Smoke Clears

Pawan kumar's 'dhoomam' stars fahadh faasil, roshan mathew, and aparna balamurali., 'dhoomam' review: fahadh faasil film leaves you unsatisfied when the smoke clears.

After films like Lucia and U-Turn, filmmaker Pawan Kumar employs the twists and turns of a thriller in Dhoomam to present an important message; almost a warning. The film uses flashbacks wrapped in more flashbacks to solve the mystery of why two people, Avinash and his wife Diya (Aparna Balamurali) find themselves in a dicey situation with the threat of life looming upon them. 

A magnificent Fahadh Faasil plays Avinash, a man whose marketing genius is recognised by one Sidharth (Roshan Mathew) who offers him a job on the side of a road.

Avinash uses his wit and his knack for understanding consumer behaviour to exponentially increase the sales of his company’s main product – cigarettes. The cigs give way to vapes and under Avinash’s watchful eye, business meets politics and the sky becomes the limit.

As Avinash and Diya try to piece together how and why they’re in a tough spot, a mysterious man continues to send them on a goose chase with a time limit. On the face of it, the premise is gripping and the first half of Dhoomam keeps you at the edge of your seat but eventually, the film begins to lag. 

Once the messaging is clear, it begins to seem like they’re just hammering the same point home over and over again.

Arguably, this could be because of their over-reliance on dialogues instead of imagery. It begins to feel like an anti-smoking public service announcement that lasts for more than 2 hours.

Both Faasil and Mathew deliver exemplary and effective performances: the latter as a charming heir apparent and the former as a man battling a fluctuating conscience. Balamurali complements Faasil’s act with an impressive showing of her own. Pawan Kumar tries to imbibe his latest with the same charm as the aforementioned films but a weak screenplay hinders those efforts. 

Preetha Jayaraman’s cinematography is worthy of mention; every scene matches the essence of the film’s messaging. I would specifically focus on how Jayaraman’s lens views Diya’s inner conflict with close up shots of twirling smoke that will leave you feeling suffocated. 

Poornachandra Tejaswi’s score feels rather heavy handed at times and clashes with the film’s otherwise languorous pace. 

There is no doubt that the film was made with good intentions and to its credit, the messaging never wavers and is almost effective. With a tighter screenplay and a better payout, Dhoomam would’ve been another flawless feather to Kumar’s cap.

'KGF' and 'Kantara' producer Hombale Films released Fahadh Faasil's latest Malayalam film Dhoomam in theatres today. The movie is released in five languages Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Telugu. The movie also features Roshan Mathew, Achyuth Kumar, Vineeth, Joy Mathew, and Anu Mohan in pivotal roles.

Dhoomam is Hombale Films' debut Malayalam film, following in the footsteps of hits like as KGF and Kantara. Pawan Kumar, the critically acclaimed filmmaker of Lifeu Ishtene, Lucia, and U-Turn, directs this full-length Malayalam feature for the first time. Following the success of Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum, Fahadh Faasil's newest effort is Dhoomam. In terms of money, the film has been considered Fahadh's most ambitious project to date. Aparna Balamurali portrays the female protagonist, returning with Fahadh after their highly praised work in Maheshinte Prathikaaram. In significant parts are Roshan Mathew, Achyuth Kumar, Vineeth, Joy Mathew, and Anu Mohan.

The music is by renowned Kannada musician Poornachandra Tejaswi, while the cinematography is by Preeta Jayaraman, who has worked on films such as Kannamoochi Yenada, Abhiyum Naanum, Aakasamantha, and Hey Sinamika. Preeta is the niece of acclaimed filmmaker P.C. Sreeram. Magic Frames and Prithviraj Productions handle the film's distribution in Kerala.

About Dhoomam Dhoomam is available in various languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. The creative producers are Karthik Gowda and Vijay Subramaniam, with Renganaath Ravee handling the sound design. Shibu Sushilan will serve as Executive Producer and Kabir Manav will act as Line Producer. Chetan DSouza directs the action, Joha Kabir is in charge of the fashion style, and Srikanth Pupala is the Chief Associate Director. Josmon George is the Script Advisor, Babin Babu is in Distribution, Obscura Entertainment is in charge of Digital Marketing, and Manju Gopinath is the PRO. Binu Bringforth serves as the Marketing Consultant.

Pawan Kumar, the director of successful films like Lucia and U-Turn, has directed Dhoomam, his first Malayalam film. The movie revolves around the use of tobacco and how it affects not just the health of people but also their lives in myriad ways.

It is during the 24-hour period that Avainash recounts the story of his corporate life in the tobacco company to his wife Diya. Sid and his uncle Praveen (Vineeth Sreenivasan) will do anything to increase the profits of the company by increasing cigarette sales but Avinash realises at one point that people’s lives matter. And when he decides to quit his job, things take a turn for the worse for him. And now he and Diya finds themselves held hostage by an unknown person. Who is this person and what does he want from them? Do they save themselves from death?

Dhoomam, as the name says, revolves around cigarettes and smoking. Director Pawan Kumar (who also appears in a cameo in the first half) drives home the point of what tobacco companies do to market the product and how people choose to smoke even though they are aware of its harmful effects. Unfortunately, the movie seems to revolve solely around this topic and it gets too overbearing. The movie seems more like a public service ad with a thriller thrown in and doesn't offer too much for the audience as a thriller. There are not enough gripping scenes or intriguing moments in the film and with a weak script and flat narration, it becomes a tiring watch after a point.

Fahadh Faasil pulls off the role of Avinash with ease and Roshan Mathew is good as Sid as well. Fahadh and Roshan both have a very natural style of acting and their scenes come off well. However, the talented Aparna Balamurali is not too convincing as a wife in distress. Pawan Kumar had good intentions with Dhoomam, but his vision and the audience expectations seem to be on different planes.

With an excellent cast, Dhoomam, produced by Hombale Films, had all the makings of a good thriller but the weak script hindered it.

In the trailer, Fahadh is seen playing a man working in an advertising agency. He proposes an idea to his company on making a no-smoking advertisement that people will take interest in watching, much to the surprise of the officials. The character, in search of money and fame, seems to fall in trouble when he takes a criminal route to achieve his goal. The trailer then gives us a glimpse of the film’s fast-paced nature, as we see thrilling scenes that generate curiosity.

Pawan first wrote the script of Dhoomam in 2008, even before his debut Lifeu Ishtene . Titled as C10H14N2 back then, the film was supposed to be made in Kannada. After many unsuccessful attempts in finalising a hero and zeroing in on a producer, Pawan began the project with Fahadh and Hombale Films last year.

The film was announced after Pawan’s project with Puneeth Rajkumar, titled Dvitva, was shelved following the sudden demise of the actor. The filmmaker’s last work is the time loop thriller ‘Kudi Yedamaithe’, starring Rahul Vijay and Amala Paul. The film was made for Aha Telugu.

Fahadh reunites with Roshan Mathew after the lockdown film CU Soon, and he is back sharing screen space with Aparna Balamurali after Maheshinte Prathikaram. His last film was the family drama Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum, directed by Akhil Sathiyan.

Dhoomam is Hombale Films’ second film of the year after the comedy drama Raghavendra Stores. The production house, owned by Vijay Kiragandur , had a terrific 2022 with gigantic hits like KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara . In Dhoomam, Pawan’s regular collaborators Poornachandra Tejaswi SV and Suresh Arumugam have handled the score and music, and editing responsibilities respectively. Preetha Jayamaran is the film’s cinematographer.
