The Best Day of My Life Essay

The best day of my life is my 16th birthday. It is a day I will never forget in my life. I consider it till now my best birthday. All my relatives and friends were present at my birthday party. The best part of the party was my grandmother was present there. For the last time, she prepared all the food items I loved eating. It is even more special as it was the last day that I spent with her, after which she passed away. I spent the most time with her and she also enjoyed herself a lot with me for the last time in her life. This birthday is even more special as it was my last birthday with my grandmother.

The best day of my life was when I went on a school outing with my friends. We ate delicious food and enjoyed the day to the fullest.

I woke up at 6 am and got ready for school. My mother dropped me to school. From there we went to a science park by bus. During the entire journey we danced, sang, played games, and did many more fun activities. We ate snacks and played games with our teacher also. When we arrived we visited the science city and enjoyed every bit of it.

Besides the science park, it was a water park, so we quickly changed our clothes and jumped into the pool. We enjoyed ourselves in the pool, and we kept on playing for an hour. After that, we took a bath and changed clothes. We had rice and chicken for our lunch. We loved the food. After the food, we returned by bus. During the whole bus journey, we sang and danced.

This day is memorable as I could spend it with my friends. The day was a day to be remembered. We had so much fun together. Everything is worth remembering from the beginning to the end of the journey.

Life is full of events - both good and bad. Some things will be forgotten over time, and some will stay in your heart forever. Life is full of surprises and shocks, good and bad news, and unexpected turns. Fortune can benefit some people in life, and help them to reach the pinnacle of glory and happiness.

The Best Day of My Life

Recently I received the best gift from my dad. Since childhood, I always wanted a dog, and recently he had brought me one. I was studying in my room, dad entered my room with a labrador in his hands. I jumped from my bed with happiness. I also started crying as I could not believe my eyes. My mom and dad were always against having a dog. But he brought it, and made it the best day of my life.

Significance of My Best Day

I still remember myself bursting into tears and happiness at the same time. That night I held Bruno the whole time. The next moment I saw myself buying stuff for the dog. I bought food, clothes, toys, and many more things which would make him happy. That night I held him tight and slept beside him. I could not sleep the whole night due to the excitement.

I looked at him throughout the entire night with utmost happiness and surprise. That day was the best day of my life as I got my best friend. A best friend who would never leave me. A best friend who will always be there for me whenever I need him.A best friend who will make me the happiest. A friend who will love me to the fullest. That dog gave me the ultimate happiness and, this is how the day became the best day of my life. I named the dog Bruno.

I am always looking for him whenever I come back from school. He always jumps, licks me, and wags his tail after seeing me. My friends come along with me to play with him. Bruno also became their friend.

What I Love about My Dog

The thing that I love about Bruno the most is that he can gel well with people. My sister was not that comfortable with dogs. But Bruno made her fall in love with him. They are now the best of friends. He would jump in happiness whenever he saw him. She would also run toward him and would pick him up. She feeds him food and always brings toys and treats for him. She loves her to the fullest and, at the same time he loves her to the fullest. This is how Bruno became everyone's favourite.

Every person has some happy days and some bad days in their life. Both help people learn different things from these different experiences. But the happy days are worth remembering. They help you cheer on your days of sadness and bring back all the memories that are worth cherishing. The best day has a great impact on our life.

The best day of my life essay

Everyone passed through sad and happy times , but you have to have a day that is the best day of your life and that is what we will know here in The best day of my life essay.

The best day of my life

Our lives are full of many days and events, some days will be happy full of good and joy that will bring joy to our hearts, and remain firmly in the heart forever. The memories of the happy days remain present in the heart and spirit.

And the happiest day is  the day of graduation from each stage of study. It is a day full of mixed feelings that can not be explained or separated.

Despite the great joy of success and graduation, the heart feels for a moment the great emptiness that will surround it after the farewell of the friends of study, and at the same time, the joy remains the master of the situation, there is no greater joy than the joy of graduation.

No matter how many happy days in life there is no nicer than the day I get the fruits of fatigue and diligence,  Success in study is the basis of the future, the key to life, something we are entitled to be proud of; because it is an achievement for ourselves, and the realization of many dreams and aspirations, and the transition from one stage to another.

And because it is a happy day we must see the expressions of joy and pleasure on the faces of all friends and family who come to congratulate us on success,  But that joy on the faces of parents is the most beautiful and most expensive at all.

The best day of my life was when  my father surprised me with a gift on my birthday. When I opened it, I found a very cool bike. I couldn’t prevent myself from jumping because of joy.

I remember urging him to teach me how to drive it daily until I could learn to drive. How happy I was when I found him seeing me driving alone. And I liked a lot when he smiles after I perform one of the simple movements such as driving with one hand or doing any other movements. This day was one of the best days of my life.

I remember very well that I still have this bike even though it no longer fits me. But my memories with it are wonderful, I raced by it with my friends, and I also enjoyed a lot when driving it at sunset and the weather was humid and beautiful, and the air caressed my face and body.

It was such a great feeling, I might get to ride the bike again to get back this feelings from time to time.

The best day of my life : (Short story)

The best day of my life when the doctors managed to cure me of cancer. After a struggle that lasted for two and a half years, I can’t describe the many feelings I’ve had for two and a half years. Whether clinging to hope and trying to raise morale and ignoring all feelings of fear and anxiety, and certainly pain is one of the things that if it gets stuck in your head, it is not a simple matter to get it out.

Therefore, after a journey of struggle that its beginning was ” be optimistic” to a congratulations from the doctor after telling me that I had gotten rid of any traces of tumor in my digestive system.

Of course I am very grateful to hear this now. I can make up for what I missed from activities and studies. I was trying as much as possible to maintain my educational progress. But because of my long-term hospitalization, I missed a lot of classes.

I would like to thank all my friends who supported me in raising my spirits and visiting me continuously.

After that I felt a little tired but I thought I had the flu. I didn’t care about it, and at two o’clock at night my temperature rose and I felt severe pain in my back. My whole body was in pain, I could hardly move and feel very weak.

Then I remembered that I was not wearing a mask at my friend’s wedding, so I suspected that what I was feeling from the pain were the symptoms of Corona (Covid-19).

In the hospital, I was examined by the specialized doctor, and the doctor told me that there is a suspicion that you have been infected with the Corona virus (Covid-19), and some tests and x-rays must be done to confirm this matter.

I tried to be consistent, and went to the lab to do the tests and then to the x-ray room, and after I took the x-ray, I got dizzy. I fell to the ground and could not move, and the doctor and nurses rushed towards me to save me.

I did not feel anything after that, my health condition deteriorated very quickly and I was transferred to the intensive care room. I stayed in the intensive care unit 14 days.

It was proven by analyzes and x-rays that I was infected with the Corona virus (Covid-19), and the doctors and nurses took great care of me, until my health improved and I recovered completely from the disease.

I considered the day I got rid of this dangerous disease as the best day of my life and decided to celebrate that day every year.

The best day of my life short essay

The best day of my life was last vacation. My father and mother talked to us that there is a social duty on us towards cancer patients. And  that we should support children and adults, but especially children.

So we actually started asking what we’re going to do there. My father began to tell us about the importance of knowing the psychological state of the patient. Therefore, we must take care of  the psychological state of patients without notifying them that you pity them.

You should treat them cheerfully and work to support them happily. Then he told us not to worry about this disease is not contagious.

He also cautioned not to take too long with patients and to respect time. So we actually went to the hospital. After wearing protective clothing so as not to transmit any diseases to patients, we were prepared to enter the first patient’s room, who was a small child at the age of 14 years.

I was a little afraid of my actions but after a short time I managed to make him smile a lot. Only then I felt  happy and understood what I should do.

This moment was indeed the most beautiful moment in my life when I was able to support him and make him a happy person.

Describe the best day of your life

The best day of my life was very interesting, I don’t know how it happened but I felt a strange optimism as soon as I woke up that day. I felt very strong and energetic. I went to school and attended some normal classes,

When I finished, I went to the gym by chance to find the coach talking that he wanted to test some new students in basketball. I said to myself “this is the time to put your fear aside, either now or forget about it forever”.

I went to the coach and told him that I wanted to apply with them, he said why not, and asked me to come so that he can see some of my skills.

I went to change my clothes and participated in training and warm-up with them, and it was time for individual work.

I’ve never felt like this before, so high concentration with more energy , and I didn’t feel any fear. Just me and the ball and scoring.

Everyone was amazed at my skill and how I had not joined the team before, and the coach asked me to join immediately and he is happy that I asked to join. This day represents the best day of my life.

A day in my life essay 200 words

The most beautiful day of my life was so amazing and wonderful. I still remember that wonderful feeling I had as soon as I saw the gift my father brought me.

I woke up to my mother’s voice asking me to go down because my father wanted me to do something important. I went to the living room where my father is standing and hiding a big box in it, and he told me what you think about opening this box to see what’s inside.

I felt strange and some different feelings such as confusion and longing, I went to open the box and there was a sound of something moving inside, I said, Oh my God, Dad, there is something alive inside. What is this?. He replied, “Why don’t you open it up and see for yourself, my dear?.

I actually quickly opened the box to find inside a puppy with beautiful and soft golden hair. Oh my God, how beautiful I immediately hugged him and looked for a few minutes at my father and mother and found them filming the moment.

I can’t describe the feelings of happiness I had, I wish I could fly or jump higher to express how happy I am at this moment. This is my first pet and I loved it so much, I have never had any pet to be responsible for it and I can teach it some manners and enjoy playing with it.

I watched many movies on YouTube or TV, and I saw such a moment, but nothing really describes it as it should. This is a very wonderful gift, especially when you are of the right age. It was a really great gift.

The best day of my life essay 200 words

Undoubtedly, there are situations or days that pass by us that make us appreciate the value of the things around us. The best day of my life when I miraculously survived a car accident.

Last year I was cycling in the roads around the park, which is close to my house, and decided to get out on the highway for a bit and try cruising among the cars.

Suddenly, a terrifyingly fast car appeared and I did not notice it, and the driver was talking on the mobile as well. I didn’t notice the car because it was coming from behind all I could hear was the sound of the brakes and I felt a collision from behind that made me jump in the air. I fall to the ground next to another car that almost passed over me.

I was very scared and can’t believe that I managed to survive this accident, of course this day taught me a lot like not taking risks and it made me mature a lot. It made me feel responsible and self-esteem and that I must maintain my safety.

I went through several other situations that some of my friends tried to lure me into, but witch saved me was sticking to my decision not to take risks and stick to safety first.

After that, I learned that they were exposed to some dangers and accidents, so I felt grateful that I stuck to my decision and didn’t perform some dangerous games or dangerous movements.

I felt that this day was a huge difference in my life, and helped me to mature and appreciate the good things in my life.

The best day of my life essay 100 words

The best day of my life when my aunt  was cured of cancer. My father was very worried about his sister and her children.

That year, my father took my cousins to live with us temporarily until their mother recovered. In addition to that their father is always accompanying the mother in the hospital.

It was a very harsh period when you lived with your family members and you find them suffering in front of your eyes. This does not leave time for you to rest and you live your life to check on them only. It somehow brings you closer to the pain they feel.

So I found that the happiest day of my life was when we got the news of my aunt’s recovery and we all went to pick her up from the hospital and go home.

The best day of my life essay 150 words

Undoubtedly, I am fortunate because I am healthy and in good health and do not have any serious diseases. In the past months, my best friend was suffering from cancer and was in a lot of pain due to chemotherapy.

He faced it with strength and I supported him a lot on a daily basis. I could see him every day losing weight, losing all the hair on his head. Completely changed and became thin and suffers from severe pain in all of his body.

It was a very painful experience for him and certainly for me as well because I was going through it with him and I did not give up on him.

I learned a lot through this experience like that people can handle pain when there is someone to support them and always raise their moral and psychological side.

I also learned that we may face disappointments in people close to us, and that they may stay away from us because we suffer a lot and they have nothing to offer in their belief.

As I learned from this experience the most important lesson, that life is changeable, and as with a severe fall, it is also possible to rise again. That’s why it was the best day of my life when my friend was cured.

Speech on the best day of my life

Certainly the past two years were the most difficult for many around the world, we went through a global epidemic, many were infected, so the best day of my life was because of overcoming this crisis with all my family members.

All my family members have contracted this disease, and we have all been isolated in different places. There were fears and great anxiety from each individual about himself and his family members, about whom nothing was known.

And the more severe the disease, the more fearful we became for our safety. We went through some bad days, but because of my young age and my strong immunity, the infection was not as strong as my father, he is a smoker, and he suffers from some diseases that affect immunity. So he suffers more from this disease.

I am the first to recover in my family members, I thank God for that, but really the most difficult period I went through when I was waiting for news about my family and the development of their condition.

So I really see it as the best day of my life when all my family members are healed and we are reunited under one roof. We were quite lucky. Many families went through such an experience and lost many of their family members.

Paragraph about the best day in my life

The best day of my life when I was able to recover from my foot injury and get back to playing football again. This is the best day of my life, because I was so afraid of losing my skills and not being able to play enough like I used to do before the injury and my broken leg.

But after training and physiotherapy, I was able to go back and play again, and I feel full of energy and vitality and there is no effect because of my feet.

This makes me very happy because my dreams and future ambitions are related to this sport that I practice and I would very much like to continue playing it and become professional in it, achieving great successes and gaining fame and money.

So it’s great that I can continue and still have the opportunity to do so.

Best day of my life essay for class 5

The best day of my life was last year when I caught a fish with my dad. My father took me fishing with him and prepared everything for this trip.

A long time ago, my father told me that he would take me fishing soon, and when the moment came, I was very happy.

We went to the lake and sat in the place where my father used to fish, and my father prepared everything and taught me how to fish and throw baits in the water.

I had some problems at first and my string got stuck in some rocks and tree branches, but in the end I was able to understand the cause and dealt well.

I was watching the hook well, as my father told me, and I found something that attracted me strongly, I felt a great shock and pulled it in my direction, I found great resistance and the fish jumped everywhere. At this moment I felt a feeling that I had never felt in all my life, an absolute happiness when I looked at the fish that I managed to catch.

A day in my life essay 100 words

The best day of my life was when I could draw my mom. Recently, I have been trying to learn which hobby I can do at home due to the global pandemic that prevents us from leaving the house, accompanying friends, playing sports or gatherings in general.

So for a while I have been watching many videos that teach drawing skills. I have already been able to apply the explanations to many famous personalities. But one day I woke up and wanted to try drawing a family member, and follow the instructions I learned.

I brought all the tools and sat in front of my mother without telling her what I’m doing. And when I showed her the drawing, she was amazed at how wonderful the drawing was, which encouraged me to color the picture to become more realistic.

I waited until evening, and when my father returned I made him see the painting. He did not believe that I was the one who drew it and he told me what I used, did I use a program that converts the image into a drawing, so we told him that I drew it. He was very happy and told me many nice words, and encouraged me to continue this hobby.

This day was very nice for me and made me feel that I can achieve something interesting and beautiful that makes others happy, especially that my mother asked me to photograph this drawing and published it on her own account, and it got many positive comments, all of which are encouragement and amazement.

I love this day so much and would like to learn more because of this day.

How it works

Have you ever experienced a day so perfect that it felt like a dream? A day where everything seemed to align in your favor, and every moment was etched in your memory as if captured by the lens of a cherished photograph. I am fortunate enough to have lived through such a day, a day I proudly label as the best day of my life.

It was a crisp autumn morning, the kind that welcomes you with a gentle breeze and leaves rustling underfoot.

The sky painted in hues of orange and pink, as if nature itself was celebrating the impending joy that the day held. What made this day exceptional was not the grandeur of an event or a lavish celebration but the simplicity and authenticity of each moment.

The journey of this remarkable day began with a spontaneous road trip with close friends. We set out with no specific destination in mind, allowing the open road to guide us. Laughter filled the car as we shared anecdotes, sang along to our favorite tunes, and indulged in guilty pleasure snacks. The freedom of the open road mirrored the liberty we felt in our hearts, and it set the tone for the joyous hours that lay ahead.

As the day unfolded, we stumbled upon a quaint little town nestled between rolling hills. Its charm was irresistible, and we decided to explore its cobblestone streets and hidden gems. The locals welcomed us with warm smiles, sharing stories of the town’s history and traditions. We savored local delicacies, discovering flavors that danced on our taste buds and lingered in our memories.

The highlight of the day, however, was an impromptu visit to a sunflower field. The golden blooms stretched as far as the eye could see, swaying gently in the breeze like a sea of happiness. It was a sight that transcended words, leaving us in awe of nature’s beauty. In that moment, surrounded by friends and bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and contentment.

The best days are often the ones where time seems to stand still. As evening descended, we found ourselves by a serene lake, its still waters reflecting the kaleidoscope of colors painted across the sky. Sitting on the shore, we shared stories and dreams, contemplating the vastness of the universe above us. The tranquil beauty of that moment etched a lasting imprint on my soul.

Reflecting on this extraordinary day, I realize that its magic lay not in extravagant gestures or grand plans but in the spontaneity of life’s simple pleasures. It was a day where laughter echoed louder than any grand celebration, where the beauty of nature and the warmth of friendship created a symphony of joy that resonated in my heart.

In the grand tapestry of our lives, these simple, unscripted moments often weave the most profound memories. The best day of my life was a celebration of the present, a reminder that joy can be found in the ordinary and that sometimes, the most beautiful experiences are the ones unplanned and unanticipated.

As I reminisce about that day, I am reminded to embrace the unpredictability of life, to find joy in the journey rather than fixating on the destination. The best day of my life serves as a testament to the fact that happiness is often found in the unplanned detours, the unexpected encounters, and the genuine connections that make life a beautiful and unpredictable adventure.

Essay on Happiest Day of My Life in 500 Words

Below we have provided Happiest Day of My Life Essay in English, suitable for class 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10.

“ Happiness does not depend on what we have; it depends on how we feel towards what we have. We can be happy with little and miserable with much.” ~ William D. Hoard

Fighting with our friends is a now and then activity. But what is even more common? Having arguments with our parents. I am going to tell you about an episode that happened in my life when I was in the 10th standard. I used to go to my tuition classes from 5 pm to 7 pm every Monday to Friday. One evening, when I was walking down the stairs of the tuition centre, my friends and I decided to stop and eat ice cream. I knew my taste buds were about to be delighted!

After finishing my ice cream, I bid farewell to my friends, took an auto and reached home. I could see my mother standing at the gate and my father about to start the car. My mother’s eyes were watery. But I could sense that she breathed a sigh of relief the moment she saw me. As soon as I entered the drawing-room, my mother and my father walked in behind me. They were now looking at me angrily.

They started shouting at me. They asked me why I was late and why I hadn’t informed them. My parents said that they were extremely worried about me. My mother told me that she couldn’t stop thinking that something terrible had happened to me. My father reminded me that in a city like Delhi, where the crime rate is so high, I ought to be more careful and responsible. I felt irritated and agitated by their sudden outburst.

I still remember the exact words that I uttered out of my mouth, “When did eating an ice cream become such a big crime? Why do you have to overreact all the time? I wish I didn’t have parents; maybe then I would’ve been entitled to some freedom. It is impossible to live with you.” My parents turned silent, and I went stomping into my room.

The next day my father told us to get into the car, but he didn’t disclose where we were going. Everyone remained silent for the whole trip. In about 25 minutes, the car came to a halt in front of an orphanage. I did not know what my father had in mind. We all made our way into the orphanage, and my father told me to interact with the kids there.

All the kids at the orphanage were very welcoming and warm. None of them had any parents. A lot of them told me their stories. Reshma, a girl of 10, said to me that her mother died while giving birth to her and she never saw her dad. She was brought here when she was just a baby.

An orphanage is not the most amusing place. The rooms there were small and cramped. They did not have an air conditioner or even a cooler. None of them had been to a restaurant or an amusement park. They rarely got a cake or chocolates to eat. None of the toys that they had was in good condition. Sneha, another girl at the orphanage, told me that there were many nights when she felt lonely.

She told me, “Not one day has passed when I haven’t missed my parents. I would give anything in the world to be with them for just one day.” I realized that the things we take for granted, they dream of them. I walked out towards the main gate and saw my parents talking to the caretaker. I had never been happier to see them. That day I learnt the value of having parents, the importance of having a family.

I ran towards my mother, hugged her and burst into tears. That day was the best and indeed the happiest of my life. I realized that my parents would always be there for me. They would stand beside me through thick and thin. Having parents is not simply normal; it is a blessing which not everyone gets. I apologised to my parents for the previous night’s behaviour and thanked my father for teaching me this lesson.

My father told me something in my ear, and I quickly ran towards the car. I opened the trunk and retrieved a big box of chocolates and candies. My mother also came to help me with the other package which had crayons and colouring books in it. I distributed these things among the children at the orphanage with my own hands. I can’t possibly describe how happy and delighted they were.

The Lessons Of Mortality

“As I’ve aged, things that are more personal to me have become somewhat less important. Perhaps I’ve become less self-centered with the awareness of mortality, how short one person’s life is.” This is how my 72-year-old grandma believes her values have changed over the course of her life. Even though I am only 12 years old, I know my life won’t last forever, and someday I, too, will reflect on my past decisions. We were all born to exist and eventually die, so we have evolved to value things in the context of mortality.

One of the ways I feel most alive is when I play roller derby. I started playing for the Rose City Rollers Juniors two years ago, and this year, I made the Rosebud All-Stars travel team. Roller derby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport. The physicality and intense training make me feel in control of and present in my body.

My roller derby team is like a second family to me. Adolescence is complicated. We understand each other in ways no one else can. I love my friends more than I love almost anything else. My family would have been higher on my list a few years ago, but as I’ve aged it has been important to make my own social connections.

Music led me to roller derby.  I started out jam skating at the roller rink. Jam skating is all about feeling the music. It integrates gymnastics, breakdancing, figure skating, and modern dance with R & B and hip hop music. When I was younger, I once lay down in the DJ booth at the roller rink and was lulled to sleep by the drawl of wheels rolling in rhythm and people talking about the things they came there to escape. Sometimes, I go up on the roof of my house at night to listen to music and feel the wind rustle my hair. These unique sensations make me feel safe like nothing else ever has.

My grandma tells me, “Being close with family and friends is the most important thing because I haven’t

always had that.” When my grandma was two years old, her father died. Her mother became depressed and moved around a lot, which made it hard for my grandma to make friends. Once my grandma went to college, she made lots of friends. She met my grandfather, Joaquin Leyva when she was working as a park ranger and he was a surfer. They bought two acres of land on the edge of a redwood forest and had a son and a daughter. My grandma created a stable family that was missing throughout her early life.

My grandma is motivated to maintain good health so she can be there for her family. I can relate because I have to be fit and strong for my team. Since she lost my grandfather to cancer, she realizes how lucky she is to have a functional body and no life-threatening illnesses. My grandma tries to eat well and exercise, but she still struggles with depression. Over time, she has learned that reaching out to others is essential to her emotional wellbeing.

Caring for the earth is also a priority for my grandma I’ve been lucky to learn from my grandma. She’s taught me how to hunt for fossils in the desert and find shells on the beach. Although my grandma grew up with no access to the wilderness, she admired the green open areas of urban cemeteries. In college, she studied geology and hiked in the High Sierras. For years, she’s been an advocate for conserving wildlife habitat and open spaces.

Our priorities may seem different, but it all comes down to basic human needs. We all desire a purpose, strive to be happy, and need to be loved. Like Nancy Hill says in the YES! Magazine article “Three Things That Matter Most in Youth and Old Age,” it can be hard to decipher what is important in life. I believe that the constant search for satisfaction and meaning is the only thing everyone has in common. We all want to know what matters, and we walk around this confusing world trying to find it. The lessons I’ve learned from my grandma about forging connections, caring for my body, and getting out in the world inspire me to live my life my way before it’s gone.

Time Only Moves Forward

Sandra Hernandez gazed at the tiny house while her mother’s gentle hands caressed her shoulders. It wasn’t much, especially for a family of five. This was 1960, she was 17, and her family had just moved to Culver City.

Flash forward to 2019. Sandra sits in a rocking chair, knitting a blanket for her latest grandchild, in the same living room. Sandra remembers working hard to feed her eight children. She took many different jobs before settling behind the cash register at a Japanese restaurant called Magos. “It was a struggle, and my husband Augustine, was planning to join the military at that time, too.”

In the YES! Magazine article “Three Things That Matter Most in Youth and Old Age,” author Nancy Hill states that one of the most important things is “…connecting with others in general, but in particular with those who have lived long lives.” Sandra feels similarly. It’s been hard for Sandra to keep in contact with her family, which leaves her downhearted some days. “It’s important to maintain that connection you have with your family, not just next-door neighbors you talk to once a month.”

Despite her age, Sandra is a daring woman. Taking risks is important to her, and she’ll try anything—from skydiving to hiking. Sandra has some regrets from the past, but nowadays, she doesn’t wonder about the “would have, could have, should haves.” She just goes for it with a smile.

Sandra thought harder about her last important thing, the blue and green blanket now finished and covering

her lap. “I’ve definitely lived a longer life than most, and maybe this is just wishful thinking, but I hope I can see the day my great-grandchildren are born.” She’s laughing, but her eyes look beyond what’s in front of her. Maybe she is reminiscing about the day she held her son for the first time or thinking of her grandchildren becoming parents. I thank her for her time and she waves it off, offering me a styrofoam cup of lemonade before I head for the bus station.

The bus is sparsely filled. A voice in my head reminds me to finish my 10-page history research paper before spring break. I take a window seat and pull out my phone and earbuds. My playlist is already on shuffle, and I push away thoughts of that dreaded paper. Music has been a constant in my life—from singing my lungs out in kindergarten to Barbie’s “I Need To Know,” to jamming out to Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” in sixth grade, to BTS’s “Intro: Never Mind” comforting me when I’m at my lowest. Music is my magic shop, a place where I can trade away my fears for calm.

I’ve always been afraid of doing something wrong—not finishing my homework or getting a C when I can do better. When I was 8, I wanted to be like the big kids. As I got older, I realized that I had exchanged my childhood longing for the 48 pack of crayons for bigger problems, balancing grades, a social life, and mental stability—all at once. I’m going to get older whether I like it or not, so there’s no point forcing myself to grow up faster.  I’m learning to live in the moment.

The bus is approaching my apartment, where I know my comfy bed and a home-cooked meal from my mom are waiting. My mom is hard-working, confident, and very stubborn. I admire her strength of character. She always keeps me in line, even through my rebellious phases.

My best friend sends me a text—an update on how broken her laptop is. She is annoying. She says the stupidest things and loves to state the obvious. Despite this, she never fails to make me laugh until my cheeks feel numb. The rest of my friends are like that too—loud, talkative, and always brightening my day. Even friends I stopped talking to have a place in my heart. Recently, I’ve tried to reconnect with some of them. This interview was possible because a close friend from sixth grade offered to introduce me to Sandra, her grandmother.

I’m decades younger than Sandra, so my view of what’s important isn’t as broad as hers, but we share similar values, with friends and family at the top. I have a feeling that when Sandra was my age, she used to love music, too. Maybe in a few decades, when I’m sitting in my rocking chair, drawing in my sketchbook, I’ll remember this article and think back fondly to the days when life was simple.

The Life-Long War

Every morning we open our eyes, ready for a new day. Some immediately turn to their phones and social media. Others work out or do yoga. For a certain person, a deep breath and the morning sun ground him. He hears the clink-clank of his wife cooking low sodium meat for breakfast—doctor’s orders! He sees that the other side of the bed is already made, the dogs are no longer in the room, and his clothes are set out nicely on the loveseat.

Today, though, this man wakes up to something different: faded cream walls and jello. This person, my hero, is Master Chief Petty Officer Roger James.

I pulled up my chair close to Roger’s vinyl recliner so I could hear him above the noise of the beeping dialysis machine. I noticed Roger would occasionally glance at his wife Susan with sparkly eyes when he would recall memories of the war or their grandkids. He looked at Susan like she walked on water.

Roger James served his country for thirty years. Now, he has enlisted in another type of war. He suffers from a rare blood cancer—the result of the wars he fought in. Roger has good and bad days. He says, “The good outweighs the bad, so I have to be grateful for what I have on those good days.”

When Roger retired, he never thought the effects of the war would reach him. The once shallow wrinkles upon his face become deeper, as he tells me, “It’s just cancer. Others are suffering from far worse. I know I’ll make it.”

Like Nancy Hill did in her article “Three Things that Matter Most in Youth and Old Age,” I asked Roger, “What are the three most important things to you?” James answered, “My wife Susan, my grandkids, and church.”

Roger and Susan served together in the Vietnam war. She was a nurse who treated his cuts and scrapes one day. I asked Roger why he chose Susan. He said, “Susan told me to look at her while she cleaned me up. ‘This may sting, but don’t be a baby.’ When I looked into her eyes, I felt like she was looking into my soul, and I didn’t want her to leave. She gave me this sense of home. Every day I wake up, she makes me feel the same way, and I fall in love with her all over again.”

Roger and Susan have two kids and four grandkids, with great-grandchildren on the way. He claims that his grandkids give him the youth that he feels slowly escaping from his body. This adoring grandfather is energized by coaching t-ball and playing evening card games with the grandkids.

The last thing on his list was church. His oldest daughter married a pastor. Together they founded a church. Roger said that the connection between his faith and family is important to him because it gave him a reason to want to live again. I learned from Roger that when you’re across the ocean, you tend to lose sight of why you are fighting. When Roger returned, he didn’t have the will to live. Most days were a struggle, adapting back into a society that lacked empathy for the injuries, pain, and psychological trauma carried by returning soldiers. Church changed that for Roger and gave him a sense of purpose.

When I began this project, my attitude was to just get the assignment done. I never thought I could view Master Chief Petty Officer Roger James as more than a role model, but he definitely changed my mind. It’s as if Roger magically lit a fire inside of me and showed me where one’s true passions should lie. I see our similarities and embrace our differences. We both value family and our own connections to home—his home being church and mine being where I can breathe the easiest.

Master Chief Petty Officer Roger James has shown me how to appreciate what I have around me and that every once in a while, I should step back and stop to smell the roses. As we concluded the interview, amidst squeaky clogs and the stale smell of bleach and bedpans, I looked to Roger, his kind, tired eyes, and weathered skin, with a deeper sense of admiration, knowing that his values still run true, no matter what he faces.

Wise Words From Winnie the Pooh

As I read through Nancy Hill’s article “Three Things That Matter Most in Youth and Old Age,” I was comforted by the similar responses given by both children and older adults. The emphasis participants placed on family, social connections, and love was not only heartwarming but hopeful. While the messages in the article filled me with warmth, I felt a twinge of guilt building within me. As a twenty-one-year-old college student weeks from graduation, I honestly don’t think much about the most important things in life. But if I was asked, I would most likely say family, friendship, and love. As much as I hate to admit it, I often find myself obsessing over achieving a successful career and finding a way to “save the world.”

A few weeks ago, I was at my family home watching the new Winnie the Pooh movie Christopher Robin with my mom and younger sister. Well, I wasn’t really watching. I had my laptop in front of me, and I was aggressively typing up an assignment. Halfway through the movie, I realized I left my laptop charger in my car. I walked outside into the brisk March air. Instinctively, I looked up. The sky was perfectly clear, revealing a beautiful array of stars. When my twin sister and I were in high school, we would always take a moment to look up at the sparkling night sky before we came into the house after soccer practice.

I think that was the last time I stood in my driveway and gazed at the stars. I did not get the laptop charger from

essay about best day of life

my car; instead, I turned around and went back inside. I shut my laptop and watched the rest of the movie. My twin sister loves Winnie the Pooh. So much so that my parents got her a stuffed animal version of him for Christmas. While I thought he was adorable and a token of my childhood, I did not really understand her obsession. However, it was clear to me after watching the movie. Winnie the Pooh certainly had it figured out. He believed that the simple things in life were the most important: love, friendship, and having fun.

I thought about asking my mom right then what the three most important things were to her, but I decided not to. I just wanted to be in the moment. I didn’t want to be doing homework. It was a beautiful thing to just sit there and be present with my mom and sister.

I did ask her, though, a couple of weeks later. Her response was simple.  All she said was family, health, and happiness. When she told me this, I imagined Winnie the Pooh smiling. I think he would be proud of that answer.

I was not surprised by my mom’s reply. It suited her perfectly. I wonder if we relearn what is most important when we grow older—that the pressure to be successful subsides. Could it be that valuing family, health, and happiness is what ends up saving the world?

Decoding The Butterfly

For a caterpillar to become a butterfly, it must first digest itself. The caterpillar, overwhelmed by accumulating tissue, splits its skin open to form its protective shell, the chrysalis, and later becomes the pretty butterfly we all know and love. There are approximately 20,000 species of butterflies, and just as every species is different, so is the life of every butterfly. No matter how long and hard a caterpillar has strived to become the colorful and vibrant butterfly that we marvel at on a warm spring day, it does not live a long life. A butterfly can live for a year, six months, two weeks, and even as little as twenty-four hours.

I have often wondered if butterflies live long enough to be blissful of blue skies. Do they take time to feast upon the sweet nectar they crave, midst their hustling life of pollinating pretty flowers? Do they ever take a lull in their itineraries, or are they always rushing towards completing their four-stage metamorphosis? Has anyone asked the butterfly, “Who are you?” instead of “What are you”? Or, How did you get here, on my windowsill?  How did you become ‘you’?

Humans are similar to butterflies. As a caterpillar

becomes a butterfly, a baby becomes an elder. As a butterfly soars through summer skies, an elder watches summer skies turn into cold winter nights and back toward summer skies yet again.  And as a butterfly flits slowly by the porch light, a passerby makes assumptions about the wrinkled, slow-moving elder, who is sturdier than he appears. These creatures are not seen for who they are—who they were—because people have “better things to do” or they are too busy to ask, “How are you”?

Our world can be a lonely place. Pressured by expectations, haunted by dreams, overpowered by weakness, and drowned out by lofty goals, we tend to forget ourselves—and others. Rather than hang onto the strands of our diminishing sanity, we might benefit from listening to our elders. Many elders have experienced setbacks in their young lives. Overcoming hardship and surviving to old age is wisdom that they carry.  We can learn from them—and can even make their day by taking the time to hear their stories.

Nancy Hill, who wrote the YES! Magazine article “Three Things That Matter Most in Youth and Old Age,” was right: “We live among such remarkable people, yet few know their stories.” I know a lot about my grandmother’s life, and it isn’t as serene as my own. My grandmother, Liza, who cooks every day, bakes bread on holidays for our neighbors, brings gifts to her doctor out of the kindness of her heart, and makes conversation with neighbors even though she is isn’t fluent in English—Russian is her first language—has struggled all her life. Her mother, Anna, a single parent, had tuberculosis, and even though she had an inviolable spirit, she was too frail to care for four children. She passed away when my grandmother was sixteen, so my grandmother and her siblings spent most of their childhood in an orphanage. My grandmother got married at nineteen to my grandfather, Pinhas. He was a man who loved her more than he loved himself and was a godsend to every person he met. Liza was—and still is—always quick to do what was best for others, even if that person treated her poorly. My grandmother has lived with physical pain all her life, yet she pushed herself to climb heights that she wasn’t ready for. Against all odds, she has lived to tell her story to people who are willing to listen. And I always am.

I asked my grandmother, “What are three things most important to you?” Her answer was one that I already expected: One, for everyone to live long healthy lives. Two, for you to graduate from college. Three, for you to always remember that I love you.

What may be basic to you means the world to my grandmother. She just wants what she never had the chance to experience: a healthy life, an education, and the chance to express love to the people she values. The three things that matter most to her may be so simple and ordinary to outsiders, but to her, it is so much more. And who could take that away?

This Former State Trooper Has His Priorities Straight: Family, Climate Change, and Integrity

I have a personal connection to people who served in the military and first responders. My uncle is a first responder on the island I live on, and my dad retired from the Navy. That was what made a man named Glen Tyrell, a state trooper for 25 years, 2 months and 9 days, my first choice to interview about what three things matter in life. In the YES! Magazine article “The Three Things That Matter Most in Youth and Old Age,” I learned that old and young people have a great deal in common. I know that’s true because Glen and I care about a lot of the same things.

For Glen, family is at the top of his list of important things. “My wife was, and is, always there for me. My daughters mean the world to me, too, but Penny is my partner,” Glen said. I can understand why Glen’s wife is so important to him. She’s family. Family will always be there for you.

Glen loves his family, and so do I with all my heart. My dad especially means the world to me. He is my top supporter and tells me that if I need help, just “say the word.” When we are fishing or crabbing, sometimes I

essay about best day of life

think, what if these times were erased from my memory? I wouldn’t be able to describe the horrible feeling that would rush through my mind, and I’m sure that Glen would feel the same about his wife.

My uncle once told me that the world is always going to change over time. It’s what the world has turned out to be that worries me. Both Glen and I are extremely concerned about climate change and the effect that rising temperatures have on animals and their habitats. We’re driving them to extinction. Some people might say, “So what? Animals don’t pay taxes or do any of the things we do.” What we are doing to them is like the Black Death times 100.

Glen is also frustrated by how much plastic we use and where it ends up. He would be shocked that an explorer recently dived to the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean—seven miles!— and discovered a plastic bag and candy wrappers. Glen told me that, unfortunately, his generation did the damage and my generation is here to fix it. We need to take better care of Earth because if we don’t, we, as a species, will have failed.

Both Glen and I care deeply for our families and the earth, but for our third important value, I chose education and Glen chose integrity. My education is super important to me because without it, I would be a blank slate. I wouldn’t know how to figure out problems. I wouldn’t be able to tell right from wrong. I wouldn’t understand the Bill of Rights. I would be stuck. Everyone should be able to go to school, no matter where they’re from or who they are.  It makes me angry and sad to think that some people, especially girls, get shot because they are trying to go to school. I understand how lucky I am.

Integrity is sacred to Glen—I could tell by the serious tone of Glen’s voice when he told me that integrity was the code he lived by as a former state trooper. He knew that he had the power to change a person’s life, and he was committed to not abusing that power.  When Glen put someone under arrest—and my uncle says the same—his judgment and integrity were paramount. “Either you’re right or you’re wrong.” You can’t judge a person by what you think, you can only judge a person from what you know.”

I learned many things about Glen and what’s important in life, but there is one thing that stands out—something Glen always does and does well. Glen helps people. He did it as a state trooper, and he does it in our school, where he works on construction projects. Glen told me that he believes that our most powerful tools are writing and listening to others. I think those tools are important, too, but I also believe there are other tools to help solve many of our problems and create a better future: to be compassionate, to create caring relationships, and to help others. Just like Glen Tyrell does each and every day.

The Phone Call

Dear Grandpa,

In my short span of life—12 years so far—you’ve taught me a lot of important life lessons that I’ll always have with me. Some of the values I talk about in this writing I’ve learned from you.

Dedicated to my Gramps.

In the YES! Magazine article “Three Things That Matter Most in Youth and Old Age,” author and photographer Nancy Hill asked people to name the three things that mattered most to them. After reading the essay prompt for the article, I immediately knew who I wanted to interview: my grandpa Gil.

My grandpa was born on January 25, 1942. He lived in a minuscule tenement in The Bronx with his mother,

essay about best day of life

father, and brother. His father wasn’t around much, and, when he was, he was reticent and would snap occasionally, revealing his constrained mental pain. My grandpa says this happened because my great grandfather did not have a father figure in his life. His mother was a classy, sharp lady who was the head secretary at a local police district station. My grandpa and his brother Larry did not care for each other. Gramps said he was very close to his mother, and Larry wasn’t. Perhaps Larry was envious for what he didn’t have.

Decades after little to no communication with his brother, my grandpa decided to spontaneously visit him in Florida, where he resided with his wife. Larry was taken aback at the sudden reappearance of his brother and told him to leave. Since then, the two brothers have not been in contact. My grandpa doesn’t even know if Larry is alive.

My grandpa is now a retired lawyer, married to my wonderful grandma, and living in a pretty house with an ugly dog named BoBo.

So, what’s important to you, Gramps?

He paused a second, then replied, “Family, kindness, and empathy.”

“Family, because it’s my family. It’s important to stay connected with your family. My brother, father, and I never connected in the way I wished, and sometimes I contemplated what could’ve happened.  But you can’t change the past. So, that’s why family’s important to me.”

Family will always be on my “Top Three Most Important Things” list, too. I can’t imagine not having my older brother, Zeke, or my grandma in my life. I wonder how other kids feel about their families? How do kids trapped and separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border feel?  What about orphans? Too many questions, too few answers.

“Kindness, because growing up and not seeing a lot of kindness made me realize how important it is to have that in the world. Kindness makes the world go round.”

What is kindness? Helping my brother, Eli, who has Down syndrome, get ready in the morning? Telling people what they need to hear, rather than what they want to hear? Maybe, for now, I’ll put wisdom, not kindness, on my list.

“Empathy, because of all the killings and shootings [in this country.] We also need to care for people—people who are not living in as good circumstances as I have. Donald Trump and other people I’ve met have no empathy. Empathy is very important.”

Empathy is something I’ve felt my whole life. It’ll always be important to me like it is important to my grandpa. My grandpa shows his empathy when he works with disabled children. Once he took a disabled child to a Christina Aguilera concert because that child was too young to go by himself. The moments I feel the most empathy are when Eli gets those looks from people. Seeing Eli wonder why people stare at him like he’s a freak makes me sad, and annoyed that they have the audacity to stare.

After this 2 minute and 36-second phone call, my grandpa has helped me define what’s most important to me at this time in my life: family, wisdom, and empathy. Although these things are important now, I realize they can change and most likely will.

When I’m an old woman, I envision myself scrambling through a stack of storage boxes and finding this paper. Perhaps after reading words from my 12-year-old self, I’ll ask myself “What’s important to me?”

Lessons My Nana Taught Me

I walked into the house. In the other room, I heard my cousin screaming at his game. There were a lot of Pioneer Woman dishes everywhere. The room had the television on max volume. The fan in the other room was on. I didn’t know it yet, but I was about to learn something powerful.

I was in my Nana’s house, and when I walked in, she said, “Hey Monkey Butt.”

I said, “Hey Nana.”

Before the interview, I was talking to her about what I was gonna interview her on. Also, I had asked her why I might have wanted to interview her, and she responded with, “Because you love me, and I love you too.”

Now, it was time to start the interview. The first

essay about best day of life

question I asked was the main and most important question ever: “What three things matter most to you and you only?”

She thought of it very thoughtfully and responded with, “My grandchildren, my children, and my health.”

Then, I said, “OK, can you please tell me more about your health?”

She responded with, “My health is bad right now. I have heart problems, blood sugar, and that’s about it.” When she said it, she looked at me and smiled because she loved me and was happy I chose her to interview.

I replied with, “K um, why is it important to you?”

She smiled and said, “Why is it…Why is my health important? Well, because I want to live a long time and see my grandchildren grow up.”

I was scared when she said that, but she still smiled. I was so happy, and then I said, “Has your health always been important to you.”

She responded with “Nah.”

Then, I asked, “Do you happen to have a story to help me understand your reasoning?”

She said, “No, not really.”

Now we were getting into the next set of questions. I said, “Remember how you said that your grandchildren matter to you? Can you please tell me why they matter to you?”

Then, she responded with, “So I can spend time with them, play with them, and everything.”

Next, I asked the same question I did before: “Have you always loved your grandchildren?”

She responded with, “Yes, they have always been important to me.”

Then, the next two questions I asked she had no response to at all. She was very happy until I asked, “Why do your children matter most to you?”

She had a frown on and responded, “My daughter Tammy died a long time ago.”

Then, at this point, the other questions were answered the same as the other ones. When I left to go home I was thinking about how her answers were similar to mine. She said health, and I care about my health a lot, and I didn’t say, but I wanted to. She also didn’t have answers for the last two questions on each thing, and I was like that too.

The lesson I learned was that no matter what, always keep pushing because even though my aunt or my Nana’s daughter died, she kept on pushing and loving everyone. I also learned that everything should matter to us. Once again, I chose to interview my Nana because she matters to me, and I know when she was younger she had a lot of things happen to her, so I wanted to know what she would say. The point I’m trying to make is that be grateful for what you have and what you have done in life.

From The Author: Responses to Student Winners

Dear Emily, Isaac, Antonia, Rory, Praethong, Amanda, Lily, and Jonas,

Your thought-provoking essays sent my head spinning. The more I read, the more impressed I was with the depth of thought, beauty of expression, and originality. It left me wondering just how to capture all of my reactions in a single letter. After multiple false starts, I’ve landed on this: I will stick to the theme of three most important things.

The three things I found most inspirational about your essays:

You listened.

You connected.

We live in troubled times. Tensions mount between countries, cultures, genders, religious beliefs, and generations. If we fail to find a way to understand each other, to see similarities between us, the future will be fraught with increased hostility.

You all took critical steps toward connecting with someone who might not value the same things you do by asking a person who is generations older than you what matters to them. Then, you listened to their answers. You saw connections between what is important to them and what is important to you. Many of you noted similarities, others wondered if your own list of the three most important things would change as you go through life. You all saw the validity of the responses you received and looked for reasons why your interviewees have come to value what they have.

It is through these things—asking, listening, and connecting—that we can begin to bridge the differences in experiences and beliefs that are currently dividing us.

Individual observations

Each one of you made observations that all of us, regardless of age or experience, would do well to keep in mind. I chose one quote from each person and trust those reading your essays will discover more valuable insights.

“Our priorities may seem different, but they come back to basic human needs. We all desire a purpose, strive to be happy, and work to make a positive impact.”

“You can’t judge a person by what you think , you can only judge a person by what you know .”

Emily (referencing your interviewee, who is battling cancer):

“Master Chief Petty Officer James has shown me how to appreciate what I have around me.”

Lily (quoting your grandfather):

“Kindness makes the world go round.”

“Everything should matter to us.”

Praethong (quoting your interviewee, Sandra, on the importance of family):

“It’s important to always maintain that connection you have with each other, your family, not just next-door neighbors you talk to once a month.”

“I wonder if maybe we relearn what is most important when we grow older. That the pressure to be successful subsides and that valuing family, health, and happiness is what ends up saving the world.”

“Listen to what others have to say. Listen to the people who have already experienced hardship. You will learn from them and you can even make their day by giving them a chance to voice their thoughts.”

I end this letter to you with the hope that you never stop asking others what is most important to them and that you to continue to take time to reflect on what matters most to you…and why. May you never stop asking, listening, and connecting with others, especially those who may seem to be unlike you. Keep writing, and keep sharing your thoughts and observations with others, for your ideas are awe-inspiring.

I also want to thank the more than 1,000 students who submitted essays. Together, by sharing what’s important to us with others, especially those who may believe or act differently, we can fill the world with joy, peace, beauty, and love.

We received many outstanding essays for the Winter 2019 Student Writing Competition. Though not every participant can win the contest, we’d like to share some excerpts that caught our eye:

Whether it is a painting on a milky canvas with watercolors or pasting photos onto a scrapbook with her granddaughters, it is always a piece of artwork to her. She values the things in life that keep her in the moment, while still exploring things she may not have initially thought would bring her joy.

—Ondine Grant-Krasno, Immaculate Heart Middle School, Los Angeles, Calif.

“Ganas”… It means “desire” in Spanish. My ganas is fueled by my family’s belief in me. I cannot and will not fail them.

—Adan Rios, Lane Community College, Eugene, Ore.

I hope when I grow up I can have the love for my kids like my grandma has for her kids. She makes being a mother even more of a beautiful thing than it already is.

—Ashley Shaw, Columbus City Prep School for Girls, Grove City, Ohio

You become a collage of little pieces of your friends and family. They also encourage you to be the best you can be. They lift you up onto the seat of your bike, they give you the first push, and they don’t hesitate to remind you that everything will be alright when you fall off and scrape your knee.

— Cecilia Stanton, Bellafonte Area Middle School, Bellafonte, Pa.

Without good friends, I wouldn’t know what I would do to endure the brutal machine of public education.

—Kenneth Jenkins, Garrison Middle School, Walla Walla, Wash.

My dog, as ridiculous as it may seem, is a beautiful example of what we all should aspire to be. We should live in the moment, not stress, and make it our goal to lift someone’s spirits, even just a little.

—Kate Garland, Immaculate Heart Middle School, Los Angeles, Calif.

I strongly hope that every child can spare more time to accompany their elderly parents when they are struggling, and moving forward, and give them more care and patience. so as to truly achieve the goal of “you accompany me to grow up, and I will accompany you to grow old.”

—Taiyi Li, Lane Community College, Eugene, Ore.

I have three cats, and they are my brothers and sisters. We share a special bond that I think would not be possible if they were human. Since they do not speak English, we have to find other ways to connect, and I think that those other ways can be more powerful than language.

—Maya Dombroskie, Delta Program Middle School, Boulsburg, Pa.

We are made to love and be loved. To have joy and be relational. As a member of the loneliest generation in possibly all of history, I feel keenly aware of the need for relationships and authentic connection. That is why I decided to talk to my grandmother.

—Luke Steinkamp, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio

After interviewing my grandma and writing my paper, I realized that as we grow older, the things that are important to us don’t change, what changes is why those things are important to us.

—Emily Giffer, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.

The media works to marginalize elders, often isolating them and their stories, and the wealth of knowledge that comes with their additional years of lived experiences. It also undermines the depth of children’s curiosity and capacity to learn and understand. When the worlds of elders and children collide, a classroom opens.

—Cristina Reitano, City College of San Francisco, San Francisco, Calif.

My values, although similar to my dad, only looked the same in the sense that a shadow is similar to the object it was cast on.

—Timofey Lisenskiy, Santa Monica High School, Santa Monica, Calif.

I can release my anger through writing without having to take it out on someone. I can escape and be a different person; it feels good not to be myself for a while. I can make up my own characters, so I can be someone different every day, and I think that’s pretty cool.

—Jasua Carillo, Wellness, Business, and Sports School, Woodburn, Ore.

Notice how all the important things in his life are people: the people who he loves and who love him back. This is because “people are more important than things like money or possessions, and families are treasures,” says grandpa Pat. And I couldn’t agree more.

—Brody Hartley, Garrison Middle School, Walla Walla, Wash.

Curiosity for other people’s stories could be what is needed to save the world.

—Noah Smith, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio

Peace to me is a calm lake without a ripple in sight. It’s a starry night with a gentle breeze that pillows upon your face. It’s the absence of arguments, fighting, or war. It’s when egos stop working against each other and finally begin working with each other. Peace is free from fear, anxiety, and depression. To me, peace is an important ingredient in the recipe of life.

essay about best day of life

The Birthday Gift

I’ve known Jodelle for years, watching her grow from a quiet and timid twelve-year-old to a young woman who just returned from India, where she played Kabaddi, a kind of rugby meets Red Rover.

One of my core beliefs as an educator is to show up for the things that matter to kids, so I go to their games, watch their plays, and eat the strawberry jam they make for the county fair. On this occasion, I met Jodelle at a robotics competition to watch her little sister Abby compete. Think Nerd Paradise: more hats made from traffic cones than Golden State Warrior ball caps, more unicorn capes than Nike swooshes, more fanny packs with Legos than clutches with eyeliner.

We started chatting as the crowd chanted and waved six-foot flags for teams like Mystic Biscuits, Shrek, and everyone’s nemesis The Mean Machine. Apparently, when it’s time for lunch at a robotics competition, they don’t mess around. The once-packed gym was left to Jodelle and me, and we kept talking and talking. I eventually asked her about the three things that matter to her most.

She told me about her mom, her sister, and her addiction—to horses. I’ve read enough of her writing to know that horses were her drug of choice and her mom and sister were her support network.

I learned about her desire to become a teacher and how hours at the barn with her horse, Heart, recharge her when she’s exhausted. At one point, our rambling conversation turned to a topic I’ve known far too well—her father.

Later that evening, I received an email from Jodelle, and she had a lot to say. One line really struck me: “In so many movies, I have seen a dad wanting to protect his daughter from the world, but I’ve only understood the scene cognitively. Yesterday, I felt it.”

Long ago, I decided that I would never be a dad. I had seen movies with fathers and daughters, and for me, those movies might as well have been Star Wars, ET, or Alien—worlds filled with creatures I’d never know. However, over the years, I’ve attended Jodelle’s parent-teacher conferences, gone to her graduation, and driven hours to watch her ride Heart at horse shows. Simply, I showed up. I listened. I supported.

Jodelle shared a series of dad poems, as well. I had read the first two poems in their original form when Jodelle was my student. The revised versions revealed new graphic details of her past. The third poem, however, was something entirely different.

She called the poems my early birthday present. When I read the lines “You are my father figure/Who I look up to/Without being looked down on,” I froze for an instant and had to reread the lines. After fifty years of consciously deciding not to be a dad, I was seen as one—and it felt incredible. Jodelle’s poem and recognition were two of the best presents I’ve ever received.

I  know that I was the language arts teacher that Jodelle needed at the time, but her poem revealed things I never knew I taught her: “My father figure/ Who taught me/ That listening is for observing the world/ That listening is for learning/Not obeying/Writing is for connecting/Healing with others.”

Teaching is often a thankless job, one that frequently brings more stress and anxiety than joy and hope. Stress erodes my patience. Anxiety curtails my ability to enter each interaction with every student with the grace they deserve. However, my time with Jodelle reminds me of the importance of leaning in and listening.

In the article “Three Things That Matter Most in Youth and Old Age” by Nancy Hill, she illuminates how we “live among such remarkable people, yet few know their stories.” For the last twenty years, I’ve had the privilege to work with countless of these “remarkable people,” and I’ve done my best to listen, and, in so doing, I hope my students will realize what I’ve known for a long time; their voices matter and deserve to be heard, but the voices of their tias and abuelitos and babushkas are equally important. When we take the time to listen, I believe we do more than affirm the humanity of others; we affirm our own as well.

Charles Sanderson has grounded his nineteen-year teaching career in a philosophy he describes as “Mirror, Window, Bridge.” Charles seeks to ensure all students see themselves, see others, and begin to learn the skills to build bridges of empathy, affinity, and understanding between communities and cultures that may seem vastly different. He proudly teaches at the Wellness, Business and Sports School in Woodburn, Oregon, a school and community that brings him joy and hope on a daily basis.

From   The Author: Response to Charles Sanderson

Dear Charles Sanderson,

Thank you for submitting an essay of your own in addition to encouraging your students to participate in YES! Magazine’s essay contest.

Your essay focused not on what is important to you, but rather on what is important to one of your students. You took what mattered to her to heart, acting upon it by going beyond the school day and creating a connection that has helped fill a huge gap in her life. Your efforts will affect her far beyond her years in school. It is clear that your involvement with this student is far from the only time you have gone beyond the classroom, and while you are not seeking personal acknowledgment, I cannot help but applaud you.

In an ideal world, every teacher, every adult, would show the same interest in our children and adolescents that you do. By taking the time to listen to what is important to our youth, we can help them grow into compassionate, caring adults, capable of making our world a better place.

Your concerted efforts to guide our youth to success not only as students but also as human beings is commendable. May others be inspired by your insights, concerns, and actions. You define excellence in teaching.

The Best Day of My Life Essay: Secret of Happiness

What will you remember when somebody asks you about the best day of your life ? Maybe you will be confused as there are too many days which made you happy and it’s difficult to choose one, maybe you will be confused because of realizing, that in fact nothing happens with you. In any case you will be confused as it only seems to be easy to name the best day of your life , especially when you was told to write an essay, but nothing comes to mind. For those, who don’t want to spend their time in reflections about the past, our online team of professional writers has composed the best day of my life essay.

Best Day of my Life Essay or How Can I Reach the Happiness

I supposed that almost everybody connects the image of perfect day with the weekends, when you can get enough sleep, drink a cup of coffee without persistent rush, which followed the modern citizen’s life, in fact you can devote the day to the occupation you like, exactly this will make your day perfect.

For somebody the ideal day consists of some variants of «lazy holiday» including laying on the beach beyond the palms, watching bronzed boys and girls, playing volleyball, drinking pina colada, reading the book or just thinking about nothing. By the way, if you don’t know what to read on the beach, here are the list of top crime books https://smartwriters.org/blog/top-20-crime-books-of-all-time . But don’t worry, if you choose these variants of spending time, it doesn’t mean you are a coach potato, as sometimes person is so sick and tired of daily routine, communicating with people and work’s deadlines, that she needs to restore her energy reserve, and such type of holiday is completely satisfying. All in all, what can better reduce the stress level than watching sea sunset and listening to the breaking surf?

For others, the ideal day is connected with active ways of spending time, all kinds of hikes, mountain climbing, horse riding, cycling, extreme sports and so on. These activities are practiced by not everyone, but exactly they give an enormous energy boost and adrenaline rush, which person will remember for a long time.

But the question is does all these activities ensure your day to be the best? If to think a little, we will discover that second ways are more efficient, as such kinds of thrilling events left a deep trace in human’s memory.

The third probable way to make one of your days the best, is plunging into the world of art . Visiting concerts, plays, operas, exhibitions, ballets, observing the most popular painting online – the modern world offers to you a lot of possibilities to spend an unforgettable day. Are you keen on music? I’m sure everybody will answer affirmatively. Now just imagine the evening spent on the concert of your favorite singer or band. It sounds like the pure happiness, isn’t it? Even if the legends of the music don’t make the tours in your city, be sure the local musicians are also worth visiting, as the general atmosphere, where hundreds of people are exalted, all as one, signing or even crying song’s lyrics, is super.

On the other hand, there are the cases when people can’t name the best day of their life not by reason of their multiplicity, but because of absence of such days. From time to time for all people, I’m sure, is familiar the situation of «motion’s Illusion».  To explain in simple words, this is the situation of existence, when in fact nothing happens. All routine actions are repeated and form a close circle where everything is static. And sometimes we all start to suffocate under the pressure of every day routine, when even the idea of the best day is ridiculous for us as we strongly believe that nothing interesting will happen to us. All in all, the best helpers here are only ourselves. So if you want to break out the closed circle full of frustration and emptiness and to make every day your best, our high-quality writers have made for you a list of useful tips here:

  • Find the beauty in the ambiance . How often do you pay attention to the surrounding? Sometimes even the small details can bring you to the happiness, your only task is to notice them. Moreover, observe the nature. Yes, it’s banal, but how often after an exhausting day in the office you find the time for wandering in the nearest park, feeding the ducks and being along to think about the day which has gone? On the contrary if you aren’t indifferent about the environment, it will be interesting for you to read an informative essay on global warming here.
  • Live for today . You can argue that it’s important to think about the future, and you have a reason, but it mustn’t be an obsession as it sometimes happens. Always worrying about future depreciates the present, so escaping the thoughts about the vague day of tomorrow is useful much more often than you think.
  • People . Communicating is probably of the main factors which could make our day the best. You don’t share this idea as you have difficulties with the socialization? You are advised to read an essay about agents of socialization , which probably will be a little help for you. For many people the happiest day of their life is connected with some personal events: how couldn’t one consider the day as the best after a dizzy date with person you like, spending a fabulous day with a soul mate, a warm family reunion, a long-awaited wedding or even divorce, a child birth and so on.
  • Travel . If we are interviewing the different kinds of people about their best day of life, the answer of majority of them, despite the diverse characters, job positions, social status and personal preferences, for sure will be connecting with travelling as discovering new culture, places and people or just escaping daily routine is one of the most important component of full and happy life.
  • Meditation. Sometimes only way not to be driven mad is to meditate , the other pros of this kind of activity is self-knowledge, which will help you to understand better your inner impulses and sort out in the inner problems.
  • Hobby time! It’s not a big secret that hobby can fill your life with a lot of pleasant moments, and it is the first step to the happiness.
  • Be engaged. It’s well known fact that the more spare time person has the more he/she reflects about the controversial questions of our life, and all in all reaches the idea that everything just has no sense. So to make the life more interesting and socially significant, it’s important to be engaged. If you don’t know how to start your social activity read our best buy nothing day essay , and maybe you will support this idea.

Lust for Life

To conclude with, probably the essential that makes you happy is lust for life, as you can find yourself in different life situations: one day on the crest of a wave, other down-and-out, don’t be afraid of any life difficulties, especially when the movement of downshifting has appeared (read more https://smartwriters.org/blog/think-wisely-pros-and-cons-of-downshifting ). You shouldn’t forget that the main source of happiness isn’t your possessions or social and financial status, it’s you personally , who can make every day of your life the best!

Best Day of my Life

The best day of my life was when I found out that I was not god. This might of course need some explanation on my part, but once you understand what I mean, you would get my drift. I grew up as a child with a lot of self-confidence. I was alone most of the time as I was living away from my parents with my grandfather. Despite being a small kid , I have been self-reliant in many things. I hardly went to others seeking for any kind of help. I tried to manage everything on my own. This was good in a way , but I also carried a lot of undue pressure, as I began to handle things on my own. In a way, I was the god of my life and I ran it the way I wanted.

Although this made me look confident on the outside, I knew my own weaknesses and I was always a little insecure on the inside. I put on a brave front, but I was always afraid that I could come across a situation that I could not handle. The pressure was constantly on and I had a lingering fear of uncertainty. I never knew how I could get rid of my fear and regain stability in my life.

That is when I realized that I was not made to be a god of my life, but that I was a creation of God , who was the Supreme Being. The day I realized that, the load on my shoulders fell away and I was free to be who I was. That day was the best day of my life .

Memorable Day of My Life: 120 Words

Last month, our school arranged a trip to the Taj Mahal, Agra. The beauty of the Taj Mahal seemed to have no parallel.  It is made of white marble on the bank of the river Yamuna. The garden in front of it has tall cypress trees, colourful flowers, and rows of mountains. Many precious gems and stones are seen set on the tomb.

I found in the Taj Mahal the artistic and cultural heritage of India. Every stone of this building tells the story of the true love of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz. The white marble structure unrolled before me a new world of beauty. It is, indeed, matchless in beauty and grandeur. That’s why it is considered one of the seven wonders of the world. I was greatly charmed by its beauty. I felt breathless for a white. It was undoubtedly the most memorable day of my life.

A memorable incident is an incident which leaves an everlasting impression on our minds. The most memorable incident of my life is when I got an opportunity to exhibit my talent on stage in front of a huge audience. I always dreamt of becoming a singer. As a kid, I used my toothbrush as the mike and treated my dolls as my audience.

I was enrolled in a vocal training course in an eminent singer’s singing class and from there, based on my performance I was selected to display my skills at the Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Initially, I was a bit nervous, but got over it soon when I heard the tune. My performance was well received and the audience acclaimed me with their applauds and kept yelling “once more”. The incident made me feel on top of the world.

A moment which is sweet lasts long in our memory. I distinctly remember the day. My H. S. examination was over and I was having a relaxed time. One day, after spending the afternoon with my friends, I returned home.

My parents were waiting for me. Sister also came running. She was carrying a big envelope in her hand. They all seemed to be very excited and their faces bore reflections of animated joy. My sister shouted that there was a good news for me in the envelope and she would not tell unless she got a heavy bakshis.

After much cajoling, I could get the letter. Lo and behold! It was the admission letter from the I.I.T, Kharagpur. My joy then knew no bounds, I did quite well in the joint entrance examination. But to get selected finally in the highly competitive all-India test was something none could be sure of. In fact, I was a little tense to know the result.

Parents blessed me for my success. Neighbours also came. They all congratulated me again and again. I was lost in golden dreams. At last, I was going to join an institution of international fame! It was the happiest and most memorable day in my life because my future career got a definite direction that day. But that happy day taught me a lesson, too. I made up my mind to work hard in order to be successful in my career.

Descriptive Essay Sample “The Best Day of My Life”

' src=

Where is my best day? I plunged into my memories and spent many hours to determine those one day. And I came to the conclusion that the best day of my life was my birthday. Because from that moment, I started my life’s path. Life is given to a human for living it wisely. As the author says, “Life is meaningless and we decide how to fill its meaning.” This is the most precious gift that is given to people – life. You can possibly live a calm and quiet life with no risk and leave no trace of yourself in history. But you can bravely go for your dream and achieve all you want. After all, every human is given great potential. You only need to keep trying to develop it. This day cannot be repeated, but you can give life to your children that will adequately continue your path. You need to focus on the future, be active and do something and your aims will be closer and your children will say that their father did not live in vain. It is difficult to say what feelings and thoughts I had that day. Nobody remembers their birth. But only one thing is for sure – the love of my parents and grandparents became everything to me. It granted my happiness and joy and protected me from troubles. I want my future children to live happy lives without troubles and have meaningful lifes. To make this true, I need to send them on the right path. Most people work and strive for something for the sake of their children, as they will enjoy success or failures. You need to explain your children that if they want to achieve something, they should go to their goals. The love that you give to your children makes them stronger, and I am grateful to my parents, and my grandparents that they cared about me and gave me all the love. And, I want to give my future children care, love and understanding as well, so that they become good people that love family.

The Best Day of My Life Essay Example

It all began on a warm Saturday afternoon at the end of September while I was sitting with my family watching my brother play in a baseball game. I get a phone call from a phone number that I do not recognize. After wondering who is calling for a while, I answer it. The man on the phone says that he is the manager at Frank's Pizza and that he would like to offer me a job as a busser on Tuesday and Wednesday if I am interested. I told him yes, that I am interested and that I can start this Tuesday at 4:00 pm. After getting off the phone, I was feeling nervous. I was apprehensive because I had never had a job before and I was worried that I would not like it or I would not be good at it.

After a few days of patiently waiting, Tuesday was finally here. I went to school that day and told everyone that I got a job at Frank's Pizza. I then went home from school at 2:20 and waited for my dad to come home at 4:00, so he could drive me to work. While I was waiting, I changed my clothes into a soft pink hoodie, black leggings and red sneakers. I also quickly ate a chocolate chip granola bar. My dad finally came home at about 3:45 and drove me there. The drive took about five minutes. After five minutes, we finally got there and we parked the car in front of the restaurant and my dad came with me inside since I was feeling a little nervous to walk in alone. Then after talking to the manager for a little, my dad told me goodbye and left.

I then started meeting everyone there and they showed me where everything was. This one girl who looked a little older than me named Kathryn showed me how to clock in and told me that I should do this every time I work, as soon as I get in. She then took me to the back of the kitchen and got me a black short sleeved shirt that said Frank's Pizza on it to wear and she also told me that next time I will have to have black non-slip sneakers. Kathryn then took me back to the front of the restaurant where the server station is located and showed me where the ice and lettuce are and told me that whenever either the ice and lettuce run out to go to the kitchen and get more. She then introduced me to all the servers that were working there that day. While she was introducing me to everyone, there was a big party of about 20 in the dining room getting ready to leave. They started to clean up and told me to help them. They showed me where all the used plates go. After we finished cleaning the table, they told me to place four menus and wraps of silverware on the table. After that, Kathryn showed me how to greet and seat all the customers that walk in. She told me to seat them and then write the table number on the chart and then tell the server that he or she has that table. After that, it was time for Kathryn to go home. She said bye to me and that she would see me tomorrow.

After Kathryn left, all the other servers began talking to me and asking me questions such as where I go to school, what grade I am in and how old I am. I replied with: I go to Easton High School, I am in the eleventh grade and I am 16 years old. After we talked for a little more, some customers were leaving, so I went to the tables and started cleaning all of them. When I went to go clean one of the tables, a server followed me there and told me that I cannot touch any of the glasses with alcohol in them since I was not eighteen years old yet. He told me just to let him or someone know to come pick up the glasses for me. After I finished cleaning all the tables I went back to where all the servers were standing. One of them told me if I am ever hungry or thirsty I could grab a drink or a slice of pizza to eat. He saw that I still looked nervous and was not talking to anyone so he told me not to be shy and that everyone who works there is really nice. After cleaning a bunch of more tables, it was finally almost time to go home. As soon as 8:30 hit, all the servers began to give me a small portion of tips they made that night. I was really surprised because I did not know I was going to be making tips as a busser. I counted all my money and it was about $20. I was so happy to be going home with a little money. All the servers there told me that I did a very good job and that they would see me tomorrow. After that, I went outside and my dad's silver minivan was out in the parking lot. I got in the car and told him about the great day I had. He said that he was so happy and proud of me.

Even though I was nervous at first, I ended up having a great day and could not wait to go back the next day. The next day at school, I told all my friends about the great day I had. I will always remember this day because it was my first job and it will always remind me that even though I am nervous to do something, I should do it anyway, because I might end up having a lot of fun doing it.

Watch our Memorial Day tribute to the military who sacrificed all to serve their country

essay about best day of life

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. It's a time to gather with friends and family for a grill out, a picnic, or maybe a trip to the beach to soak up the sun. But while it may well feel like a day of celebration, what sometimes gets forgotten is that it was conceived as a day of commemoration for the brave military members who died serving their country.

A University of Phoenix survey found that less than half of Americans polled knew the exact purpose of Memorial Day, while around a third were unsure of the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

To clarify, Veterans Day, which takes place in November, is a tribute to all those who served honorably in the military in wartime or peacetime, whether living or dead.

The confusion is compounded by Armed Forces Day, a military celebration held in May for those currently serving. However, while the reasons differ, the sentiment of each day is the same: all three are important opportunities to show gratitude.

So, when you chow down on that hot dog, barrel down that slip 'n slide, or whatever you do for fun this Memorial Day, spare a moment to acknowledge the people in uniform whose sacrifice made a difference.

On this Memorial Day, watch the video for a surprise reunion of battle buddies bonded by the loss of their leade r

'This calling': UTSA graduate follows footsteps of her mother to mold young minds

E ach school day before she left the house, student-teacher Ayleen González said a prayer. It was a silent appeal to be the best educator she could be for her third-grade students.

The idea of opening young minds to new concepts first materialized when she was the youngsters’ age.

As a child, Gonzalez would stand in her bedroom and pretend to grade papers, just like her mother, Ariana González, an elementary school teacher.

Standing at the front of the make-believe class, she portrayed her mom. She conjured the imaginary sessions after brief desires to become a dancer or dentist melted away like warm candle wax.

“I had always been drawn to the school setting,” González, 21, said. “Always to being a teacher.”

Recently, González was among more than 5,000 University of Texas at San Antonio students who received degrees during the annual commencement ceremony season inside the Alamodome. She graduated with a bachelor’s in interdisciplinary studies and a bilingual education supplemental certification.

In the fall, González plans to start as a full-time teacher at Irving Dual Language Academy, where she completed her clinical residency.

González said the commencement ceremony wasn’t her last walk across the stage. She plans to continue her studies at UTSA for a master’s degree to support students further and contribute to bilingual education.

She prepared through workshops offered by the university’s College of Education and Human Development. She took practice exams and interacted with peers, administrators and teachers. She improved her skills in reading, writing and speaking in Spanish, which she grew up speaking at home. The sessions bolstered her confidence in her language abilities, which she’d share with future classes.

On her first day at Irving, González followed the lead of adviser Mayela Ravelo. The mentor guided González as she worked with the students at the school near the Basilica of Little Flower. The children had diverse backgrounds. Some had immigrated from other countries, and most shared different abilities in the dual language classes.

“We have students who don’t speak English or don’t speak Spanish,” she said. “They have a very positive attitude for the language that they are learning.”

Before venturing into academia, González had to convince her mother she was serious about following her career path. Her mother reminded her how taxing the work could be and extra hours were required to do the job well.

Seeing her daughter’s determination, the veteran teacher offered her full support.

“She knows I’ve had this calling to be a teacher since I was young,” González said. “She knew this is where I was meant to be.”

Through the years, she’s had support from former instructors such as her kindergarten teacher, Lisa Galvan.

In 2020, González thanked the educator when she graduated summa cum laude from Reagan High School. Earning the high academic distinction allowed González to honor a teacher who helped guide her through her academic journey — she chose Galvan.

Her walk across the stage was bittersweet. Because of the pandemic and safety precautions, the high school auditorium was empty except for immediate family members. She felt a bit disappointed that after all the years of study and hard work, she received her diploma in a sparsely filled hall.

That wasn’t the case several days ago at the crowd-packed Alamodome.

Cheers rang out as a speaker announced the graduates’ names. She felt the thrill of stepping on stage in her cap and gown with thousands of fellow Roadrunners. She also felt a sense of peace knowing her parents, brother and sister were looking on in the domed coliseum.

And there was another possibility. Maybe, via an online link she’d shared with her mentor teacher, the youngsters — the reason for her journey — were watching her long-awaited graduation day.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

90 day: the single life - signs john mcmanus & meghan’s relationship won’t last, below deck: ben willoughby share's sweet photo with sunny & kyle following the end of the season.

  • John's feud with Thaís continues as he shows up uninvited in Brazil during her birthday, creating chaos in their lives.
  • John proposed to Megan on The Single Life, marking them as the first couple to get engaged during a televised Tell All in the series.
  • John and Megan are still together, with John publicly wishing Megan on her birthday and confirming there is no new woman in his life.

John McManus is back on TV following his stint on 90 Day: The Single Life season 4 with Megan Brown. John was introduced in 90 Day Fiancé season 9 as Patrick Mendez’s half-brother who lived with him and created trouble between him and Thaís Ramone. John’s naughtiness won him many fans as he asked the over-enthusiastic Jibri Bell to shut up during the season 9 Tell All by calling him, “ Spahkles ” or simply entertaining them with his rude but real personality. Sadly, it failed to impress Thaís, who had to live with him.

Thaís still has a grudge against John and her displeasure is evident on her expressive face every time he’s around her and Patrick. John tried his best to convince his brother that being with Thaís was a bad idea. He suggested Thaís was a scammer taking advantage of his brother. John’s behavior messed up the family’s dynamic, and he found an enemy for life in Thaís. And now that Thaís was back in Brazil for the first time in two years after her wedding, John had come there too and Patrick didn’t tell Thaís John was coming.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

John & Thaís' Long-Running Feud Explained

John & thaís' hate each other & don't hide it.

Thaís had a difficult time adjusting to her life in America when she moved there on a K-1 visa and part of the reason was John’s brother Patrick. Thaís couldn’t get along with John at all. While Thaís had differences with Patrick as they struggled with communication, John was very vocal about how he wasn’t accepting of her relationship with his brother. Thaís was aware of John living with Patrick before she moved to the U.S . yet, she was wary of sharing her home with a stranger. Meanwhile, John’s snappy remarks about Thaís and his backhanded comments said it all.

Thaís was especially uncomfortable with Patrick throwing parties and inviting other women home, around Patrick, and still, John threw a party in the house. John had even tried to get Patrick to arrange a bachelor party involving “ 100 hookers .” Thaís was at fault for not having acquainted herself with John before moving. She was also unnecessarily rude to John when she could have figured out a different way to handle things. John wasn’t understanding of boundaries , especially when he was going to be living with a couple about to be married.

Patrick & Thaís Kicked John Out After They Moved To Las Vegas

John had to live out of his suitcase.

The brothers were living together in Patrick’s home in Austin, Texas when Thaís first came to the United States. The three then moved to Dallas, Texas before Patrick and Thaís’s wedding. Patrick mentioned they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada during the Tell All. Patrick’s home security job required him to move all the time. John also worked at the same company and didn’t mind the occasional relocation as he was single at the time. However, by the time John returned to TV on 90 Day: The Single Life season 4, he had somewhat already moved out of the Vegas house.

John Met Megan On 90 Day: The Single Life

Megan slid into john's dms.

While John’s dating life was never discussed on 90 Day Fiancé season 9, he became the main character of his story on The Single Life . John who loved his carefree existence, parties, and vices previously, had now fallen in love and even changed his relationship status on Facebook to “ taken .” He met Megan when she messaged him on Instagram. Megan had the same sense of humor as him. John and Megan chatted online and met in person four months later when he visited San Antonio. John was impressed by Megan’s looks and took pride in their sexual chemistry.

90 Day: The Single Life’s John McManus has a new GF, Meghan. However, the couple is having trouble seeing eye-to-eye on their future together.

John Proposed To Megan On the TellAll

Megan was impressed by john's spontaneous proposal.

John and Megan had been dating for five months when he filmed 90 Day: The Single Life . Patrick and Thaís were convinced it was yet another fling, but John was certain this was going to be a lifelong affair. Being in a relationship with Megan meant that John had to accept her child from a previous relationship. John never wanted to be a dad , but he was now going to become a partner and a parent at once. Megan didn’t like John’s idea of not having kids as she wished to become a mother again.

She was also in a hurry to get married to John, perhaps out of fear of him getting cold feet and refusing to move to Texas for her. She wanted John to propose to her within one year and a half. She only wanted the commitment and not the ceremony . Surprisingly, John did everything that Megan wanted.

“It’s right now, baby!”

John popped the question to Megan during the Tell All. He already had a gold band with diamonds with him. John ended up marking them as the first couple to get engaged during a televised Tell All in the series.

John Confused Fans By Posing With Mystery Woman

Fans wondered if it was john's new girlfriend.

Fans have been following John on Instagram to keep up with his spontaneous life. They want to know what happened next for him and Megan, especially since Megan is not a part of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? season 8. In April 2024, John posted a video with the sound “Happy To Be Here” by Wookiefoot. He captioned it, “ Good to get most of us together. ” The opening frame of the video was a selfie of John with a woman his fans didn’t recognize. “ Wait… I am confused… who is Johnny with now? ” asked oreopuddin and jrssopvg wrote, “ Hey Big John, whos the pretty blonde at the beginning? ” John told a fan that it was his “ sister. ”

John & Megan Are Still Together

John wished megan a happy birthday.

John proved to fans that there was no new woman in his life by dedicating a sweet post to Megan a few days later. John wanted to wish his “ babes ” publicly on her birthday. John posted a slideshow-format video with several pictures of Megan. Some of them featured her daughter. John called Megan the “ love of his life. ” Fans told John the two of them looked good together. John is happy and not regretting his hasty decision. John was pressured into making his relationship official and put on the spot by Megan, but he seems to be sure of her for now.

Will John Be Making Thaís' Life A Living Hell On Happily Ever After?

John came to brazil uninvited on thaís' birthday.

John and Thaís are still not seeing eye to eye even on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? John has now landed in Brazil uninvited and will be staying with Thaís and John in John’s dad’s apartment. John also forgot that it was Thaís’ birthday, so he didn’t wish her and said he was her “ surprise .” Thaís is already upset with John’s dad and Patrick is just trying to impress Thaís’ dad. It’s easy to see 90 Day: The Single Life 's John’s presence in Brazil is going to make matters worse for the couple as he stirs the pot and creates chaos in their lives.

90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EDT on TLC.

Why Are Divorce Memoirs Still Stuck in the 1960s?

Recent best sellers have reached for a familiar feminist credo, one that renounces domestic life for career success.

  • Share full article

An illustration of a laptop computer dropping inside a stew pot, along with a tomato, an apron, a spoon and a spice shaker.

By Sarah Menkedick

Sarah Menkedick’s most recent book is “Ordinary Insanity: Fear and the Silent Crisis of Motherhood in America.”

“The only way for a woman, as for a man, to find herself, to know herself as a person, is by creative work of her own,” Betty Friedan wrote in “ The Feminine Mystique ,” in 1963. Taking a new role as a productive worker is “the way out of the trap,” she added. “There is no other way.”

On the final page of “ This American Ex-Wife ,” her 2024 memoir and study of divorce, Lyz Lenz writes: “I wanted to remove myself from the martyr’s pyre and instead sacrifice the roles I had been assigned at birth: mother, wife, daughter. I wanted to see what else I could be.”

More than 60 years after Friedan’s landmark text, there remains only one way for women to gain freedom and selfhood: rejecting the traditionally female realm, and achieving career and creative success.

Friedan’s once-provocative declaration resounds again in a popular subgenre of autobiography loosely referred to as the divorce memoir, several of which have hit best-seller lists in the past year or two. These writers’ candid, raw and moving exposés of their divorces are framed as a new frontier of women’s liberation, even as they reach for a familiar white feminist ideology that has prevailed since “The Problem That Has No Name,” through “Eat, Pray, Love” and “I’m With Her” and “Lean In”: a version of second-wave feminism that remains tightly shackled to American capitalism and its values.

Lenz, for example, spends much of her book detailing her struggle to “get free,” but never feels she needs to define freedom. It is taken as a given that freedom still means the law firm partner in heels, the self-made woman with an independent business, the best-selling author on book tour — the woman who has shed any residue of the domestic and has finally come to shine with capitalist achievement.

It is not the freedom for a woman to stay home with her child for a year, or five. The freedom to stop working after a lifetime toiling in low-wage jobs. The freedom for a Filipina nanny to watch her own children instead of those of her “liberated” American boss. The freedom to start a farm or a homestead or engage in the kind of unpaid work ignored by an economy that still values above all else the white-collar professional labor long dominated by men — and in fact mostly fails to recognize other labor as valuable at all.

One of the paradoxes the divorce memoir highlights is that women’s work is made invisible by a society that disparages it, and the only way it becomes visible is through the triumphant narrative of a woman’s escape from it — which only reinforces its undesirability and invisibility.

In Maggie Smith’s 2023 memoir “ You Could Make This Place Beautiful ,” Smith details the critical inflection point when her poem “ Good Bones ” goes viral, her career takes off and her marriage begins to implode. She tells a reporter from The Columbus Dispatch: “I feel like I go into a phone booth and I turn into a poet sometimes. Most of the other time, I’m just Maggie who pushes the stroller.”

Nothing threatening, nothing meaningful. Just a mom pushing the stroller in the meager labor of women — until she slips into the phone booth and transforms into an achieving superhero.

This is not to diminish Smith’s work, a unique and highly refined series of linked essays that build into an emotional symphony about marital breakdown. Her intention is not, like Lenz’s, to condemn the institution of marriage or to rejoice in her release from hers, which is complicated, excruciating and tender. Her depictions of divorce clearly resonate with readers and offer solace and insight into a common experience of heartbreak. But it’s worth asking what exactly is being celebrated in the huge cultural reception her memoir, and other popular divorce memoirs, have received.

Leslie Jamison’s book “ Splinters ,” published the same day as “This American Ex-Wife,” is an exquisite, textured and precise articulation of the collapse of her marriage, all nuance and interiority where Lenz’s writing is blunt and political. But here, too, we get a female narrator for whom freedom and acceptance ultimately signify professional success. Jamison is much more vexed about this formula, but in the end she settles for lightly querying rather than assailing it. She jokes about how her editor is stressed about book sales while she’s stressed about her baby sleeping on airplanes, and mocks this as a “humblebrag”: “ I don’t care about ambition! I only care about baby carriers! ” She rushes to clarify in the next sentence, “Of course I cared about book sales, too.”

Herein lies the ultimate paradigm, the space no woman wants to explore: What if the modern woman didn’t actually care about book sales? About making partner? About building a successful brand? That would be unthinkable. Embarrassing. Mealy, mushy, female.

But later in “Splinters,” Jamison skewers the cult of male, capitalist achievement: “My notion of divinity was gradually turning its gaze away from the appraising, tally-keeping, pseudo-father in the sky who would give me enough gold stars if I did enough good things, and toward the mother who’d been here all along,” she writes. I felt an electric optimism reading this. If feminism wants to tackle patriarchy, it needs to start with that pseudo-father and his metrics of a person’s worth.

Jamison struggles toward this in “Splinters.” She wants so badly to be remarkable. To banter about the Russian G.D.P. while she spoon-feeds her toddler, or to impress arrogant lovers who critique her conversation as only “85 percent as good as it could be.” At the same time, she yearns “to experience the sort of love that could liberate everyone involved from their hamster wheels of self-performance,” a love that will “involve all your tedious moments.”

Yes , I found myself saying, I want to read about this love . A mother love that is radical, creative, affirming, even and especially in its difficulty and tedium. Jamison almost gets there, but returns ultimately to the affirmation that it’s OK to want more: “quiet mornings at my laptop, tap-tap-tapping at my keyboard.”

It is certainly OK, and natural, to want more. But what I find most exhilarating in this beautiful book is the possibility that it’s also OK to let go of wanting. It’s OK to not write a best seller, to not hold a prestigious title, to not start your own brand. It’s OK, even, to not try to find yourself, that most American of quests.

Divorce, sure. Ditch the toxic men, strike out on your own. But there’s nothing new or radical there. The radical is in a feminism that examines care as profound, powerful work and centers rather than marginalizes mothering, as both a lived act and a metaphor. We must let go of this half-century-old notion that the self can be “found” only after the roles of “mother, wife, daughter” have been rejected.

With friends, Jamison recounts lively anecdotes from a trip to Oslo with her daughter in order to prove that her life had not “‘gotten small,’ a phrase I put in quotes in my mind, though I did not know whom I was quoting.” Yet in this phrase lies another way of living: letting things get small, in a world that sees and celebrates mostly superlatives, and getting down to the level of the local, the intimate, the granular, the home.

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ga. — The home of famed Georgia College & State University alumna Flannery O’Connor has a new way for visitors to relive the past thanks to a big technological upgrade.

Using augmented reality, GCSU is allowing visitors to be able to enter the home i the popular Southern writer and take an interactive, self-guided tour of the grounds at Andalusia, her former home.

Visitors can scan a QR code inside of the Andalusia Interpretive Center and have a trip to the past with real-time images and facts about the historic space and farmstead at the swipe of screen by using their smartphones.

The university said this will enhance the locations across the property, allowing visitors “a glance into the past” with a more in-depth tour of the location.

“This new feature is on the cutting edge of delivery methods for interpretation in this area,” said Matt Davis, director of Historic Museums at Georgia College. “There’s no need to download an app. We’ve removed as many barriers as possible. Technology without barriers is where we want to be.”

For visitors who don’t have smartphones, there are iPads available for use on the tours.

The AR technology used thanks to the interactive tour includes 3D images, panoramic views, videos with more information about different places on the property and sound effects.

“As visitors walk where the Nail House once stood, they get a three-dimensional glimpse of the original structure and hear sounds of animals once housed in the pens and runs beside it,” GCSU described as an example.

For visitors still hungry for more information, they can continue their Andalusia experience from home. GCSU said they’ll get a chance to learn more about the grounds and O’Connor’s home through their phones.

In addition to the self-guided tours, docent-led tours are still available through O’Connor’s home as well, which GCSU said was a way to give students experiential learning opportunities.

“This value-added upgrade, funded by donors, is a remarkable way for guests to interact with Andalusia,” Davis said. “We hope everyone comes to experience Andalusia in 3D.”

To bring Andalusia to life with AR, the university partnered with BES Studios and ARtGlass to build the new tour.
