Methodology

Best overall : indeed.

  • Price: Free
  • Mobile app: Android, iOS
  • Company reviews: Yes

Biggest doesn’t always mean best, but we chose Indeed as the best overall job website due to its size, the number of industries it covers, lifestyles served, and its unmatched update frequency.

Free for job seekers

A lot of jobs to look through (15 new jobs per second)

Provides salary information and company reviews

High competition for jobs

Job postings are sometimes outdated

Indeed was founded in 2004 with a simple mission: to help people find jobs. It’s the largest job website in the world, boasting over 350 million monthly users with nearly 15 new job listings added every second.

Indeed posts listings for job seekers in every industry, every level from entry to executive, and every lifestyle: freelance, part time, internship, and full time. Candidates can search by job title and location, salary range, date posted, and experience level.

Indeed is 100% free for job seekers and no account is necessary. But signing up for an account will allow you to receive email alerts when new jobs are posted, upload your resume to complete applications more quickly, and receive messages from recruiters and prospective employers.

Indeed also provides salary information and a company reviews section, so you can read candid opinions on prospective employers before applying to a role or accepting an offer. Indeed’s interface is highly intuitive and designed to make your job search move faster.

Runner-Up , Best Overall : Monster

  • Price: $129 to $349
  • Company reviews: No

We picked Monster as the runner-up because it has fewer job search filters and not as many opportunities, although it’s comparable in quality and usability to Indeed.

Can apply to some jobs without an account

Jobs for entry level to experienced backgrounds

Fewer job search filters

Salaries not always listed

Employers can't post jobs for free

A true pioneer in digital recruiting, Monster was founded in 1994 to bring talent and companies together.

Like Indeed, Monster caters to job seekers from all experience levels and work styles: freelance, temp, part time, and full time. Its job search tools are free to use. You'll have to create an account using your email address in order to apply to some job listings on Monster, but it takes very little time to do so. Jobs that link to another website for applying don't require an account.

You’ll be able to save job positions and search queries when you have an account, as well as sign up for email alerts when new jobs are added in the fields you’re interested in. Candidates can search jobs by location, company, and title, but there is no option to search by salary or experience level.

Monster is a great place to post job applications if you're an employer looking to hire part time, full time, or contract employees. You can purchase a Monster employer subscription  at three different tier levels, depending on your customization needs.

In addition to its job search function, Monster also provides salary research and comparison tools. It offers makeovers for premium resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and cover letters.

Best for Employer Research : Glassdoor

Job seekers can simultaneously search for open jobs and read detailed information on each company’s culture, CEO, benefits, and salary data. This makes Glassdoor the clear winner for employer research and insights.

Easy to see salary and employer information

Many employee reviews of companies

Profile-building features are a bit lacking

Employee reviews can be positively or negatively biased

Glassdoor was created in 2008 to bring salary transparency and honest company reviews to millions of current and prospective employees. Glassdoor boasts 2.5 million employers in its database, 180 million company reviews and insights, and 55 million unique monthly visitors as of 2024.

You can create a profile to start your search on Glassdoor, then upload your resume and sign up for email alerts to receive curated lists of job opportunities. You can also browse active listings using the site’s search bar. You’ll see information about the position and how to apply on each job listing, as well as an overview of the company, anonymous ratings, and reviews of the company and its CEO. Salary and benefits information is available as well.

Job seekers can also visit each company’s Glassdoor profile to read detailed reviews on employee and interviewee experiences. This can be a game-changer for interview preparation. Glassdoor is free for job candidates.

Best for Remote Jobs : FlexJobs

  • Price: $5.95 or $9.95 per month
  • Mobile app: iOS

FlexJobs’s clear dedication to and specialization in remote opportunities makes it the obvious choice for the best website for finding remote jobs.

Specializes in flexible work for freelancers

Listings are professionally vetted

Access to exclusive deals

No free option or free trial

Not all listed jobs are exclusive

Frustrated by the difficulty in finding legitimate, flexible, work-from-home opportunities, Sara Sutton created FlexJobs in 2007. It has become the largest site for hand-screened remote jobs since its founding, with over 110,000 active listings from almost 6,000 companies across the globe.

FlexJobs members get access to professionally vetted listings across 50 categories from entry level to executive. Members also get access to exclusive discounts and deals on products and services like Intuit QuickBooks, Dell laptops, and professional career coaching.

FlexJobs charges $5.95 per month for an annual membership and $9.95 for a three-month membership in order to apply to listings and unlock member savings. It uses the proceeds from its subscription model to conduct the necessary research required to vet each opportunity it adds to its database. This ensures that every listing on FlexJobs is legitimate, giving job seekers peace of mind and a safer experience. FlexJobs will refund your subscription cost within seven days if you're not satisfied for any reason.

Job seekers rave about saving valuable time and energy thanks to FlexJobs’s scam-free, ad-free environment. Those looking to find opportunities without paying for a monthly membership can browse FlexJobs’s sister site, Remote.co , which is free but lists significantly fewer opportunities.

Best for Experienced Managers : Ladders

 The Ladders

  • Price: Free, premium price plans from $49.97 monthly to $299.64 annually
  • Mobile app: N/A

We chose Ladders as the best site for experienced managers due to its focus on connecting job seekers to high-paying opportunities.

Job listings are vetted

Positions all pay at least $100,000/year

Basic membership is free

Some listings require a paid subscription to apply

Some listings aren't categorized correctly or are expired

Known as “the home of $100K careers,” Ladders was founded in 2003 and focuses on providing vetted job listings for positions that pay at least $100,000 per year. Ladders serves as a job website, career newsroom, and a networking platform.

Ladders provides job listings for dozens of sectors, including finance, software engineering, digital marketing, human resources, data science, and industrial engineering for major firms such as Morgan Stanley, Google, and Cigna. You’ll be prompted to list the job titles you’re most interested in when you sign up for Ladders. Your Jobs tab will then automatically present you with job listings that match those titles. Some listings are free to apply to, but others require a paid subscription to the platform.

Ladders offers a basic membership free of charge and a few different subscription options for a premium membership. Prices range from $49.97 monthly to $299.64 annually. A paid subscription unlocks access to all job listings, curated job matches sent to your inbox, top placements on recruiter candidate lists, and details about other candidates who have applied to the jobs you’re eyeing. These benefits make Ladders well suited for serious job seekers in highly competitive markets.

Best for Startup Jobs : Wellfound

We picked Wellfound as the best site for startup jobs because it's trusted by over 130,000 startups of all sizes (including some big names like Spotify and Slack), and it also provides an unmatched level of transparency. It provides candidates with salary ranges and equity options upfront, and information about key figures in the company.

Provides salary and equity information upfront

Local and remote startup jobs

Small job database compared to some other sites

Only startup jobs

Wellfound, formerly AngelList, was founded in 2010 as a way to democratize how startups receive funding and hire talent.

Wellfound caters to remote and local job seekers in a variety of tech sectors, such as online publishing, health and beauty apps, and fintech. Create a login and complete your profile to apply for roles on Wellfound. Your profile serves as your resume for any jobs you apply to. You can browse open positions by job title, location, and time commitment, such as full time, part time, or internship.

Wellfound will tell you the name and title of the person who will read your submission materials for every job you apply to. This is often the CEO of the company for small startups. You’ll have to write a short cover letter explaining why you’re a good fit for the role. All cover letters must be written in the text box provided by the platform. Wellfound doesn't allow candidates to upload external files like PDFs or Word documents.

Wellfound is completely free for job seekers and is a fantastic way to start conversations and network with early-stage startup founders.

Best for Connecting Directly With Recruiters : LinkedIn

  • Price: Free, premium for $39.99

Unlike most other job websites, LinkedIn allows you to add recruiters and other people of interest to your virtual network. This makes it the best website for connecting directly with recruiters.

Great for networking

Easy to find and contact recruiters and managers

Easy to show off previous employment and accomplishments

Many spam and scam messages

Some job postings are filled or expired

Best job searching features reserved for premium memberships

LinkedIn launched in 2003 and is the world’s largest professional networking platform with more than one billion registered users from around the world and across all industries. LinkedIn serves as a database for open opportunities, a digital resume platform, and a social networking tool all in one.

Your LinkedIn profile serves as a public digital resume and portfolio. It's sent to recruiters when you’ve applied for a role, so it’s important to invest the time and effort to make sure it’s detailed, accurate, and optimized for search. It’s free to create a LinkedIn profile and browse opportunities, but LinkedIn offers a premium membership option for $39.99 that allows you to see who viewed your profile, detailed insights on the other applicants who applied for the listings you’re interested in, and the ability to send messages to people you’ve not yet connected with.

You can use your LinkedIn profile to apply to open positions and send connection requests, similar to Facebook friend requests, to grow your professional network. Recruiters can message you directly about applying for specific opportunities if your profile is well optimized for search.

Best for Up-to-Date Listings : Getwork

Getwork updates its job postings every single day, making it the best choice for those looking to be the first to apply to newly listed opportunities.

Job listings are updated every day

Jobs are verified

Jobs must appear on company websites

Employers are unable to post job openings

Getwork by LinkUp uses proprietary technology to scrape the web for freshly posted job listings, creating a higher quality database and better search experience for job searchers.

Getwork adds up-to-date job listings in dozens of fields including education, finance, healthcare, law, marketing, and tech. The site is free to use, and job seekers can browse through all opportunities without signing up for an account. But an account login allows users to save job listings for later, sign up for job alert email notifications, and save their browsing history and searches so they can replicate them at any time on any device.

Best for Hourly Workers : Snagajob

With 100 million registered job seekers and 700,000 employer locations, we chose Snagajob as the best site for hourly job seekers due to the number of listings and its easy-to-use interface.

Large number of job listings

"Hiring Immediately" can be good for picking up quick work

Many advertisements

Some users complain about spam

Since its founding in 2000, Snagajob has been connecting hourly employees to local positions and has become the top hourly work marketplace online.

Snagajob mainly posts hourly roles in healthcare, customer service, hospitality, retail sales, security, and food delivery. Job seekers can search for part-time or full-time roles with the option to filter listings by those that are “Hiring Immediately.”

Just click the "Apply Now" link on the page to apply to any open position on Snagajob. You'll be redirected to the firm's website. You can also register for Snagajob. You can opt to receive email notifications for new job listings that match your interests when you're registered.

You can also fill out your profile by adding a short bio, a photo of yourself, your availability, past experience, education, and references. Snagajob is completely free to use for job seekers.

We chose our top services based on the number of listings they provide, how much they cost, and how easy they are to use, among other features. Indeed, the best overall, takes the cake for being the biggest job site in the world, with new jobs posted every second in a wide variety of categories. The other best picks excel in specific ways, like focusing on startup or manager positions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are job websites.

Job websites act as both search engines and databases for open jobs. Some even offer premium services for job seekers such as career coaching and cover letter writing . Job sites can help candidates with any education and experience level find employment in any sector. Anyone actively looking for a job should strongly consider using a job website to find and apply to as many relevant opportunities as possible.

How Do Job Websites Work?

Most job sites are free to browse. Simply type in your desired job title and your zip code to search for opportunities in your area. But some require upfront payment to unlock full browsing and application privileges.

The hiring manager will review your information and reach out to you when you've applied if they're interested. Certain platforms like LinkedIn allow employers to reach out to qualified candidates regardless of whether they’ve applied for an open position with the company.

What Is the #1 Most Effective Job Search Method?

There may be no better way to improve your odds of finding a job than through networking . Employers who know you and your work are often more likely to give you an opportunity than those who don't know you. LinkedIn is our choice as best for connecting directly with recruiters, and it's a great way to make yourself visible to others in your field. Building a foundation of such connections can make your next job search easier.

What Are 5 Things You Should Do Before a Job Search?

Check your social media content for unsavory or unflattering comments because it's almost a sure bet that prospective employers will do so. Let your network know you're looking for a job. Make an honest assessment of your goals and be flexible. Shine up your resume, and realistically identify your bottom dollar. What's the least compensation you're willing to work for?

We reviewed more than two dozen job websites before selecting our top picks. To find the best sites, we looked at the number of listings, ease of use, costs, advanced features, industries and experience levels served, and reputation. We felt these were the most important features to examine when choosing the best websites for jobs.

Once you’re familiar with some of the best job search websites, you can decide on the strategy you’ll use to tackle your job search. For example, maybe you’ll allocate a set amount of time each day to searching for opportunities, filling out applications, networking, and preparing for interviews, using a different tool for each task.

Making a plan that incorporates the tips below can help alleviate job search anxiety and keep you motivated.

Go Beyond LinkedIn

“In the realm of job searching, it’s crucial to think beyond the traditional platforms like LinkedIn or Indeed,” says Theresa Fesinstine, founder of peoplepower.ai.

She mentions Slack as an example of an underutilized job search website, pointing out that professional Slack communities often have channels dedicated to job listings.

“These channels not only provide job listings but also offer a space for real-time interaction with industry professionals,” Fesinstine says. “Job searching is not just about finding the next paycheck; it’s about discovering opportunities for growth and collaboration. Slack channels offer a dynamic, interactive space that can elevate your job search from a transaction to a meaningful engagement.”

Seeking out networking opportunities on Slack, in other online communities, or at events in person can help your job search feel less transactional.

Embrace AI Tools

Though you should avoid completely outsourcing certain job search tasks to AI – like using verbatim ChatGPT output to answer questions on job applications or write your resume – AI tools can still help your job search.

For example, a tool that scores how well your resume matches job descriptions can help you prioritize which applications to complete first. A tool that generates a professional headshot can save you the trouble of shopping for business attire to wear for a photo.

“In an age where AI and automation are often seen as threats to the job market, it’s important to recognize the tools that empower the individual job seeker,” Fesinstine says. “Generative AI doesn’t just optimize a job search; it personalizes it, making the process more human, not less.”

Ask People Who Got Hired

If you have friends or colleagues in your industry who recently got new jobs, reach out to them to ask which job search sites and tools worked for them.

A Job-Seeker’s Guide to Navigating a Weaker Job Market

As we move into the latter part of 2024, job seekers may face an increasingly challenging labor market. The labor market has shown signs of cooling in recent months, however for younger, less experienced workers the search is even harder. Recent statistics don’t bode well for the rest of this year. So, if you're looking for a new job, it's more important than ever to be strategic, adaptable, and persistent to stand out in this competitive market. We’ll discuss some key strategies to help you ride the waves of a weaker market and, ultimately, land your next role.

Understanding the Current Market

Before we get into tactics, it's crucial to grasp the current situation. We have experienced a period of lows in the job market in the last two months. In June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the hiring rate for all workers fell to 3.6% of the labor force , nearly a post-Covid low. This slow down seems to affect young job seekers and those with limited experience more. The monthly rate of inexperienced workers landing jobs has plummeted from 20% to just 13%.

July’s report showed just 114,000 jobs added, a far cry from the expected 175,000 new positions. Now, with the unemployment rate nearing 4.3%, it’s difficult to wave off the possibility of a recession. We can only hope the Fed will cut interest rates by 0.5% in September to avert this headwind.

Industries likely to be affected by this economic downturn include retail, hospitality and manufacturing. Healthcare and finance industries are less vulnerable and are likely to stay competitive. A strategic focus could be on pivoting to industries where demand is higher.

The traditional job search approach of applying and hoping isn’t working. So, as a job seeker aiming for a new position, you'll need to be creative, strategic, and willing to adapt to stand out in this market.

Today’s NYT Mini Crossword Clues And Answers For Thursday, August 22

Bayesian yacht: bodies of entrepreneur michael lynch and morgan stanley chief recovered in italy, oprah endorses kamala harris at dnc: her political history—and rare endorsements—explained, 6 tips to consider as a job seeker in today’s market, your personal brand.

In a competitive job market, your personal brand becomes more critical than ever. It's not just having a polished resume. It's about a cohesive narrative across all your professional touchpoints. Here's how to elevate your personal brand:

  • Invest in professional branding: Consider working with a professional resume writer or career coach. Yes, it's an investment. But, investing in a professional can help you articulate your unique value and stand out in a sea of your competitors. Additionally, professional resume writers can see your potential and paths forward more clearly by focusing on what will make the most impact in your search.
  • Optimize your online presence: Ensure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and aligned with your resume. Recent data shows that recruiters find over 50% of candidates on LinkedIn. So, it's worth spending time to get it right.
  • Develop a consistent narrative: Your personal brand should tell a compelling story about what you are a leader in, what you've accomplished, and where you're headed. Ensure your resume, cover letter, LinkedIn, and interview answers tell a consistent story.
  • Showcase your results: In your resume and online profiles, focus on quantifiable achievements rather than just listing job duties. Employers care about your impact in past roles, as your results in past roles are a predictor of your success in future roles.

Networking Intentionally

In a tight job market, who you know can be just as important as what you know. Here's how to leverage networking effectively:

  • Focus on quality over quantity: Instead of applying to hundreds of jobs online, focus on building connections within your target companies or industries. Networking your way into companies you want to work with is a great way to bypass the job boards and your competition.
  • Utilize social media & informational interviews: Reach out to professionals in roles or companies you like. These conversations can provide insights about organizations not provided on job descriptions.
  • Attend industry events: Virtual or in-person, industry events are great for networking and learning trends in your field. Make sure to present yourself well and be ready to give your pitch when called upon.
  • Leverage employee referrals: According to recent data provided by Zippia, referrals account for 30-50% of hires in the U.S and have been proven to have a retention rate of 46%. Employee referrals float to the top of the interview list, which is why networking and asking for a referral is critical in a weaker market.

Upskilling: Stay Ahead of the Curve

In a rapidly evolving job market, continuous learning is no longer optional – it's essential. Here's how to stay competitive:

  • Identify high-demand skills: Research growing industries and the skills they require. For instance, roles requiring skills in data analysis, software development, and artificial intelligence are projected to see significant growth.
  • Invest in online courses: Platforms like Coursera , edX, and LinkedIn Learning offer a wide range of courses to help you acquire new skills or brush up on existing ones.
  • Consider certification programs: Industry-recognized certifications can give you a leg up on your competition in the job market. Research which certifications are most valued in your field and get them to bolster your resume.
  • Develop your soft skills: While technical skills are important, don't neglect soft skills like communication, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving. Job seekers tend to overlook these while employers rank these as top desired traits.

Targeting High-Growth Industries

While some sectors are gradually cooling , others are heating up. Here are some industries showing promise in the current market:

  • Technology: Despite some recent layoffs, the tech sector is still growing. It is especially strong in cybersecurity, cloud computing, and AI.
  • Healthcare: The demand for healthcare professionals, including mental health specialists, continues to rise.
  • Green energy: With increasing focus on sustainability, roles in renewable energy and environmental consulting are on the upswing.
  • E-commerce: As consumers continue to shift to online shopping, demand for digital marketing, logistics, and customer experience is growing.

When targeting these industries, you may need to reframe your experience. Focusing on transferable skills, both technical and soft skills, will help you in pivoting.

Mastering the Interview Process

In a competitive job market, acing the interview becomes even more crucial. CareerBuilder reported that about half of interviewers decide on candidates within 5 minutes. Here are some tips to help you stand out in your interview:

  • Research thoroughly: Go beyond the company website. Check recent news. Know who their competitors are and be ready to discuss industry trends.
  • Prepare your stories: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to craft compelling stories that showcase your skills, experience, and most importantly your results. This enables you to effectively communicate your impact to your interviewer.
  • Practice, practice, practice: Consider working with a career coach to refine your interview skills, helping you feel more confident and prepared. Absent of a coach, grab a friend or family member to ask you sample interview questions, or practice responding to interview questions by recording and reviewing your responses.
  • Follow up effectively: Send a thoughtful thank-you note via email within 24 hours of your interview. Use this to reiterate your interest and concisely address any points you wish you'd elaborated on in the interview.

Prioritizing Mental Health and Well-being

Job searching can be stressful, especially in a challenging market. Here are some strategies to maintain your mental health:

  • Establish a routine : Treat your job search like a job itself. Set regular hours for research, networking, applications, and skill-building.
  • Set realistic goals: Instead of just setting one goal of trying to get a job, set smaller goals. For example, aim to connect with 15 hiring managers and recruiters each week, with a secondary goal of landing 3 informational interviews or networking calls weekly.
  • Practice self-care: Make time for exercise, hobbies, and socializing. These activities can help reduce stress and prevent burnout.
  • Seek support: If you're overwhelmed, don't hesitate to lean on friends, family, or professionals. A job search is stressful and switching jobs is a major life change. Investing in a career coach to do it right while learning skills that will help your career long term can ensure you’re not wasting time or energy. Additionally, investing in therapy or life coaching can ensure you’re setting yourself up for success to be your best self on day one of your new role.

Embrace Adaptability

Perhaps the most crucial skill in today's job market is adaptability. Be open to opportunities that might not perfectly match your ideal job description. Consider contract or project-based work as a way to get your foot in the door and expand your network.

Navigating a weaker job market requires patience, persistence, and strategic thinking. By focusing on your personal brand, leveraging your network, continuously upskilling, and targeting high-growth industries, you can position yourself for success even in challenging times. Remember, every interaction is an opportunity to learn and grow. Stay positive, be adaptable, and trust in your ability to navigate this journey. Your next great opportunity may be just around the corner.

Career Coach Shares 5 Tips for Excellent CV and Resume When Applying for High-Paying Jobs in Kenya

  • Emmanuel Makokha, a career coach with over 10 years of experience in the Kenyan job market, described the resume as a personal marketing tool
  • Makokha said the resume is the difference between landing an interview and being overlooked for high-paying jobs due to competition in the job market
  • He emphasised that resumes should be designed to capture the attention of recruiters and should aim to make them compelling, relevant, and to the point

Elijah Ntongai, a journalist at TUKO.co.ke, has more than three years of financial, business , and technology research expertise, providing insights into Kenyan and global trends.

The job market in Kenya has become very competitive, making it essential to write effective curriculum vitae and resumes.

5 tips for excellent resume applying for high-paying jobs in Kenya.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Emphasise strategic impact in your previous roles, outline leadership achievements, dont use generic cvs, include evidence of your achievements, tell recruiters how you will add value to their organisation, recently advertised jobs in kenya.

With the high number of college and university graduates as well as experienced individuals applying for senior roles due to the high compensation packages attached to them, the resume is understandably the difference between securing an interview for a dream job or being overlooked.

At least 12000 students appeal for re-categorisation in new government funding model

To guide job seekers through the process, TUKO.co.ke sought advice from Emmanuel Makokha, a prominent Kenyan career coach with over ten years of training and experience helping Kenyans land jobs across various levels.

Tips for an excellent resume

Makokha, who is also the founder of Fresh Jobs Kenya , a jobs search database, shared key strategies for crafting standout CVs and resumes, particularly when applying for senior positions.

According to Makokha, senior-level candidates must emphasise their extensive experience and showcase the strategic impact they have had throughout their careers.

"Your CV is more than just a list of jobs; it's a reflection of your leadership journey. It's important to highlight how you have driven significant organisational changes and delivered key projects that contributed to company growth," he said in an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke.

Senior roles are often leadership roles, and therefore, employers are often interested in seeing leadership achievements and abilities outlined in the resume.

"When applying for a senior role, the employer needs to see that you have the ability to lead and inspire teams. It’s important to provide examples of projects where your leadership made a measurable difference," Makokha said.

Furthermore, job seekers are encouraged to tailor their CVs to the specific role for which they are applying.

"Don't send out generic resumes. Take the time to understand the company and the position. Then, reflect on how your skills and experience align with the role's specific requirements," said the coach.

Another critical point Makokha raised is the importance of quantifiable results as evidence for your achievements.

"Employers want to see data that backs up your claims. Include numbers that demonstrate your success, such as percentage growth in revenue, cost savings achieved, or teams you've managed," Makokha advised.

He concluded by advising applicants to outline how they plan to add value to the hiring company to give the recruiters the satisfaction that they are ideal for the positions.

"Your CV should not only show where you've been but where you’re going and how you plan to add value to the organization," Makokha concluded.

The career coach stressed that job seekers should view their CVs or resumes as personal marketing tools designed to capture the attention of recruiters and should aim to make them compelling, relevant, and to the point.
