Double Down: Diary of a Wimpy Kid #11 Summary & Study Guide Description

The following version of this book was used to create this study guide: Kinney, Jeff. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down. Amulet Books/Abrams, 2016.

The eleventh book in Kinney’s Wimpy Kid series, the young adult novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down follows middle-schooler Greg Kinney on his humorous experiences that he encounters while being forced by his mom to spend less time on video games and more time on being creative.

It is October, and Greg and the kids at school are all looking forward to Halloween, including Mariana Mendoza’s forthcoming Halloween party. Mariana gives legendary parties, and Greg cannot wait to go. At the same time, the school hosts its autumn book fair. Greg’s Mom gives him money to buy books – but instead, Greg buys things like pens that can write under water. This annoys Mom, who forces Greg to bring everything back to exchange for actual books. Greg opts to go with a handful of books from the Spineticklers horror novel series, which are very popular among everyone at school. Mom is disappointed yet again, having hoped Greg would have gone with books more challenging. Mom herself has returned to college to get her master’s degree, and she is very happy having her mind challenged and learning new things. She decides that both her older sons – Greg and Rodrick – should get away from television and video games to apply their minds in creative ways in the hopes of challenging themselves and discovering new talents.

From the start, things begin to backfire on Greg. Greg’s Mom sets up a get-together with a kid named Maddox, who lives in a rural area, does not watch television, and builds things with Legos. Mom hopes Maddox will be a good role model. Greg is excited about the prospect of Legos, but Maddox will not let Greg touch any of his completed models – and then accuses Greg of stealing when a Lego accidentally gets stuck to Greg’s elbow. When Greg’s Mom brings Greg to college for a visit, he decides to pretend to read a psychology book to fit in. A gorgeous college girl asks Greg to help her study, and Greg agrees. He spends all night cramming for the tutoring session the next day, actually learning about psychology – only to learn the girl has a boyfriend. When Greg learns that Mariana’s party will only be open to kids in the school band, Greg begs his parents to let him join. They agree, but do not know why Greg is so anxious to play an instrument.

When Greg learns that Mariana will only be invited the band’s woodwind section, he forces his best friend, Rowley, who plays an instrument, to change his costume to that of a two-headed monster so Greg will have to be allowed into the party. Greg’s Mom crashes the party by bringing along party games – which everyone loves. The night of the autumn band concert, Greg and Rowley accidentally get locked off-stage, and are discovered later by Greg’s dad who thinks they have been goofing off.

Greg ultimately decides that he and Rowley will make a homemade horror movie using gummy worms as monsters. However, putting the gummy worms in the yard attracts angry migrating geese, who trap Greg and Rowley in the house. When Greg and Rowley go into the basement to retrieve a wolf mask to scare the geese away, they accidentally set off an old Halloween decoration – an electronic witch – which scares Rowley so bad he runs outside and climbs a tree. The fire department must get Rowley down, which attracts the local news station. Rowley becomes a local celebrity, but never mentions Greg in the interviews. Greg is angry, because he knows he is the one who made Rowley famous.

Summary and Study Guide

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down is the 11th installment in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series written and illustrated by American author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney. The series has been ongoing since the first book was published in 2007, with new books still being published today. Like many of Kinney’s books, Double Down sold extremely well, becoming one of the top sellers of 2016—the year it was originally published. Several Diary of a Wimpy Kid books have been adapted for film, but Double Down is not yet one of them. Double Down features the same characters as previous Wimpy Kid books. It is written in the form of a middle-school boy’s diary. There are highly stylized illustrations throughout the text to accompany the story. Double Down focuses primarily on the weeks leading up to Halloween, following protagonist Greg Heffley through various misadventures including an attempt to make his own horror movie.

This guide uses the 2016 print edition of the novel published by Amulet Books.

Plot Summary

Double Down opens in October, a few weeks shy of Halloween. Greg Heffley, a middle-schooler, writes in his diary about his suspicion that everyone around him is secretly an actor and that he is the star of a television show. He deliberately behaves in entertaining ways for his imagined audience’s benefit. Greg also imagines other possibilities: maybe he is being observed by aliens, or maybe his deceased relatives are watching over him. The opening chapters introduce Greg’s family, including his parents, his older brother Rodrick Heffley , and his younger brother Manny. They also introduce his best friend, a sweet but gullible boy named Rowley Jefferson .

Mrs. Heffley believes that Greg is smart, but because he never applies himself, Greg’s school performance remains mediocre. At a school book fair, Greg buys books in the Spineticklers series—a set of horror novels for children. Inspired by one of the books, Greg imagines becoming rich and freezing his body so that he can be resurrected at some point in the future. Greg discusses his family’s efforts to decorate their house for Halloween. This year, particularly aggressive migratory geese have destroyed all of their jack-o’-lanterns.

At school, the students release helium balloons as part of an event called the Balloon Brigade. Each balloon includes a note asking that it be returned, and the student whose balloon travels the farthest will win a jar of candy corn. Greg can’t find the Halloween candy that his mother has purchased and hidden, so he is determined to win the candy corn. He writes a long, pleading letter and attaches it to his balloon. While he waits to get the balloon back, Greg writes a biography of I. M. Spooky, the author of the Spineticklers books. He learns that I. M. Spooky does not really exist: The books are ghostwritten.

Several days later, Greg gets a visit from a woman named Mrs. Selsam and her son, Maddox Selsam . They live in a nearby town and have found Greg’s balloon. Mrs. Heffley encourages Greg to befriend Maddox, but the two have little in common as Maddox has grown up without access to television or video games. Instead, he spends his free time making elaborate Lego sculptures. Mrs. Heffley is disappointed that the two boys do not get along. On the upside, Greg does win the jar of candy corn. Mrs. Heffley decides to return to school to complete her master’s degree, so she tries to get her sons to help out more with household chores as she is busy with her classes. Greg and Rodrick do everything in their power to avoid actually completing any chores.

Greg’s family has a pet pig. One day, Greg realizes that the pig has eaten his entire jar of candy corn. Greg and Rodrick take the pig to the vet; it vomits in Rodrick’s van on the way there. Greg is sick in turn, and a woman who sees him vomit calls the police, thinking that the boys are up to no good. When the police arrive, Greg and Rodrick explain the situation. Mrs. Heffley is disappointed in Greg for what she calls a “pattern of deception,” (105) as he regularly tells lies. Greg admits that he does lie, but also remembers some lies his family members have told him.

Hoping to help him get more invested in his future, Mrs. Heffley brings Greg to her college campus. He meets a girl in the library who asks him to tutor her in psychology. Greg studies hard, hoping to impress her, but soon learns that she has a boyfriend. As Halloween approaches, Greg wonders how he can get an invitation to a party hosted by Mariana Mendoza, a popular girl in his grade. Only kids who are in the school band are going to be invited, so Greg decides to learn to play the French horn. His parents are happy that he is showing initiative, but his motivations really have nothing to do with music, and he never practices playing his instrument.

Greg and Rowley attend Mariana’s party dressed as a two-headed “monster.” Mrs. Heffley joins the party, setting up Halloween games. Greg is mortified, but the other kids play the games with enthusiasm. In November, Greg loses interest in the French horn altogether, but his father insists that he has to keep playing so that he can learn perseverance. Greg and Rowley are both supposed to play in their school’s Fall Concert, but they accidentally lock themselves in a small room next to the stage and miss the show. Again, Greg incurs his parents’ ire.

Greg finds the remainder of his mother’s Halloween candy. He and Rowley decide to make a horror film with a plot inspired by the Spineticklers books. The movie is about a man who gets attacked by thousands of living gummy worms. Although Greg has a spectacular grand plan for the project, the reality does not live up to his expectations. The boys struggle to create special effects for the film, and the script remains unfinished. They film a few scenes, but the aggressive geese from earlier in the story surround the house. Frightened, the boys hide in the basement, but an old Halloween decoration scares Rowley and he runs outside and climbs a tree. He gets rescued from the tree and is featured on the news, gaining a degree of local fame. Greg says that he would never act silly just for an audience .

Violence & Scariness

Some mildly scary images when Greg and Rowley try to make a horror movie and gummy worms fake-kill two people. When Greg reads lots of Goosebumps-like scary books -- some covers are shown -- he has nightmares of pirates making him walk the plank toward a shark and a pitchfork mob chasing him. And more scares when Rodrick tells Greg that a monster would grab his ankle on the stairs and spiders crawl in your mouth at night. Talk of an uncle breaking his collarbone. And of course some shoving by bullies and a wedgie.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Violence & Scariness in your kid's entertainment guide.

Positive Messages

Bad behavior -- mostly lying -- has consequences for Greg, usually grounding and taking away media time, sometimes extra chores. Reading all scary books also has consequences -- characters are then scared by lots of little things. Makes fun of a modern kid idea about always being watched, reality show-style, which may remind kids that privacy is more valuable than notoriety. Also reminds kids that playing an instrument is a commitment and hard work and they should spend time exploring and developing their gifts. On the negative side, expect some potty humor as usual -- a butt drawn on a note, Greg sitting on the toilet, Greg falling into the toilet, a trip to a women's locker room, a pig puking, some farting.

Positive Role Models

Greg often makes the wrong decisions -- it's his hallmark and what makes his antics really funny to kids. In this installment he lies a lot: about being bullied so he won't have to eat the apple in his lunch, about why someone who finds his launched balloon needs to contact him, and more. And then he calls his family out on lying, especially his older brother. Greg's mom is always trying to bring out the best in her kids and insists that Greg put down the video games and work on finding his gifts. Greg's dad insists that Greg work hard practicing the French horn.

Educational Value

A reminder that you shouldn't stash food where pets can reach it, an explanation of what storyboards are when Greg and Rowley set out to make a movie, and a lesson about the publishing industry when half of Greg's class does a report on a mystery author of Goosebumps -like books that is really a group of authors. Also, a reminder to never make a group costume without an easy way out of it -- at some point you will need to use the bathroom.

Parents need to know that Double Down is the 11th book in the bestselling Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney . With most of the main action leading up to and following Halloween, this installment digs into some common kid fears: spiders crawling into your mouth while you're sleeping, a monster grabbing your ankles. And the main character, Greg, has nightmares after reading scary books in a Goosebumps -like series. He walks the plank toward sharks and is chased by a pitchfork-bearing mob. When Greg decides to make his own horror movie, he uses gummy-worm candy to pretend-kill two people. As usual in this series, Greg often makes the wrong decisions. Here he's caught lying -- with plenty of consequences -- and talks about how the rest of his family lies. Greg's mom remains the rock of the family, here insisting that Greg put down the video games and explore his many talents.

Based on 3 parent reviews

Absolute garbage, only read if you’re under the age of 5.

I hate this book so much, what's the story.

In DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: DOUBLE DOWN, Greg can't wait for Halloween. There's all that candy and a Halloween party at a classmate's house -- a party he's determined to get invited to. When Greg finds out the only kids invited are in the middle school band, he talks his parents into buying him a French horn. When he finds out the party is also only for woodwind players, he talks his friend Rowley -- a clarinet player -- into making a two-headed costume. In the meantime, Greg lets the spooky season get to him. Reading a bunch of scary books gives him nightmares, and he takes his brother Rodrick's tall tales way too seriously. Will a monster really reach for Greg's ankles on the basement stairs? Better send his little brother, Manny, down first just to be safe.

Is It Any Good?

With plenty of jokes about scary books, horror movies, and kid fears, this 11th installment of the best-selling series will find its best audience in your favorite easily scared kiddos. They're the ones who avoid the Goosebumps books at all costs, so they'll really appreciate the way author Jeff Kinney lampoons that series in Double Down . And they'll definitely laugh as Greg's mom takes over the once-cool annual Halloween party and turns the games into family-friendly fun. The moments with Rodrick may be a little tougher to handle -- Greg is definitely taken in by every tall tale his brother tells -- but there's a good lesson there: Big siblings know how to get to you. Don't be fooled so easily!

That's not the only lesson here. Parents who may cringe at all of Greg's lying will be happy there are plenty of consequences. And Greg's mom continues to want the best for her kids, insisting that Greg get out there and explore what he's good at. Greg, on the surface, seems to fail at everything, but his wild imagination still comes through. What other kid looks at a pile of gummy worms and thinks "Let's make a horror movie"? When Kinney sticks to his Halloween theme, the story feels fresh and holds together well. When he veers to strange flashbacks about piano lessons and speech class, it feels more like filler. But it's guaranteed this effort is enough to scare up more fans for Book 12.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about scares in Double Down . Greg started having nightmares after reading all those I.M. Spooky books. Do you get scared more easily after reading or watching scary things? Do you get nightmares like Greg?

At the beginning of the book, Greg imagines that he's being secretly followed by a TV crew. When does he like this supposed attention? When does he want his privacy? Would you like your life filmed all the time?

How does this Wimpy Kid book compare with others you've read? Which one is your favorite? Why?

October [ ]

Nana Heffley watching Greg in the bathroom

Greg imagines his Nana watching him in the bathroom.

At the beginning of the book, protagonist Greg Heffley can be seen talking about how he thinks his life is a reality TV show , and how he thinks Rodrick , Manny , and all the other people in his life are just actors and robots, similar to the plot of The Truman Show . He later explains how he thinks that Manny was brought in as a new star to replace him. Greg thought Manny was a machine being controlled by a person in the background and then brings the subject that his family is robots and Greg is the only human. He thinks that if Rodrick is being payed to be like, how he is, they could be friends in actual life and chill. He later sprays Frank with a hose to prove is he is a robot, resulting in Greg being grounded for a week. Later, Greg says his grandmother, Nana , is watching him from heaven , and he's got a lot of issues with it. He feels guilty when he tries to see Alex Aruda 's test answers, because he knows that all his relatives see him when he cheats. He also thinks he needs his privacy at times.

Spineticklers67dupe

Book #67 of the Spineticklers series, "My Dentist is the Devil".

Greg's school is now having a book fair, and Susan gave Greg $20, then buys useless toys like two pencils with hairy google eyes, a poster of a cat saying something sarcastic, a panda-shaped eraser, a glow-in-the-dark calculator, a pen that is able to write\draw while in water, and a yo-yo that says, "I love Reading". However, Susan is not happy with Greg's selections and made Greg promise to trade them for books. Greg then talks about in the 3rd grade, Greg wrote a poem, and sent it to the National Poetry Council , but turns out that everyone can have the poems in the book . Susan also tried to get Greg into the Talented & Gifted program, but to prove he can join, he had to take a test, in that case, he failed, causing Susan to get mad at the school. Later on, there was a secret group called "Champs" , that is used for kids that are having hard times saying "R" words, but Greg was not learning, so then Susan hired a tutor, but Greg can no longer be in the group when he said a sentence with words starting with "R". He also says that when Manny played soccer, his team never got a goal, due to Tucker, the goalie spending the rest of soccer stuffing grass in his belly button. However, he got a trophy. Susan is also disappointed when Greg gets a series of books called "Spineticklers" by I.M.Spooky , which has spooky stories.

RoastBEEFTOUCH

Students at school start the "roast beef" touch.

Greg then discusses how the geese are in town and the deals of having a walking pet pig . Then he talks about the school's Balloon Brigade , which is a school contest to see how far a student's balloon can travel, and how the prize is a giant bag of candy corn. The Cheese Touch is also discussed, and how other students keep trying to bring it back in a different form such as a Roast Beef Touch ; however, the kids unsuccessfully try to make it work.

Legos!

Malcolm's room full of Legos.

Greg later discusses how the Spinetickler's books give him nightmares and how he regrets reading them, like the dream he got a tail and people were jealous of him. He later says that he got his balloon back and that the kid who found his balloon, Maddox Selsam , came over for a playdate. It's later revealed that Maddox hasn't played video games or watched TV and goes crazy when Greg pulls up a computer game. After Maddox leaves, Greg realizes that he forgot to get the balloon. Vice Principal Roy refuses to give Greg the candy corn unless he brings his balloon to school. He asks Susan for a playdate with Maddox, to which she and Mrs. Selsam leave Greg and Maddox behind while they go into town and have coffee. Greg is thoroughly disappointed by Maddox's house, as it is very old fashioned and does not have any electronics or any television. It is revealed Maddox has a Lego City in his room but only lets Greg use the leftovers. Greg accidentally gets a brick stuck in his arm, which Maddox accuses Greg of stealing, leading to Greg being kicked out. Susan is disappointed at Greg, as he viewed Maddox as an antisocial nerd instead of a good role model.

Susan, now going back to college full-time, has a chore bag where Greg and Rodrick pick chores to do. After finishing his chores, Greg goes to eat the giant candy corn that he won but finds that the pig has eaten it. Greg told Rodrick to wake up and Rodrick wasn't too happy. Greg woke him up, but one look at the pig, he told Greg to get in the van . The pig threw up in the van, and Greg couldn't take it anymore, so Greg threw up, too. After the pig throws up multiple puddles of candy corn, Susan has a talk with Greg about his "pattern of deception" and punishes him by making him take three chores out of the chore bag each night. He then talks about how his brain works and how he has lain to so many times over the years. Susan keeps putting the pressure on Greg to do something new other than video games while also introducing him to college. Greg and his friend Rowley later join the school band in order to get invited to Mariana Mendoza 's Halloween party. He practices the French Horn but hates it and wants to quit, angering Frank who tells Greg that he can't because that was an expensive instrument and he has to honor his commitment to the instrument. Greg finds videos of a high school girl practicing the french horn, which makes Greg glad. However, Greg finds out Mariana didn't invite the entire school band, only the woodwind section. Greg gets in the party by making a "Two-Headed Monster" costume. At the party, when the party is about to hit the next level, Rowley has to use the bathroom. Susan then decides for them to leave early.

Night of the Night Crawlers

Greg is later harassed at school by the boys because they didn't like Susan's changes to the the party. At the Fall Band Concert, Greg gets stuck in the music room because Jake McGough stepped on the back of Greg's shoe giving him a flat tire. Rowley notices him in there when he came in the room, he ended up getting locked in too, causing a huge dilemma. Greg temps to open the door, but his pants ripped. Greg tries Mrs. Graziano's black binder, which worked, but it was so stiff that he couldn't sit down. He finds a black marker and gets Rowley to color the part of his underwear which is showing. Frank then comes into the room and caught them. Frank thinks they were goofing off and punishes Greg by taking away his TV and video game privileges for 2 weeks. Greg and Rowley later find a pack of gummy worms and Greg gets an idea for a horror movie.

The plot would be about a man who goes to take a shower, only to end up being eaten alive by worms. He and Rowley, while filming it with Susan and Frank's camera, Greg tries to get more worms from the laundry room to get more, but the pig is eating them. Greg tries to figure out what to do but hears Rowley screaming to the geese. Greg remembers about Rodrick having a wolf mask he wore one Halloween, and he and Rowley go to the basement room to get it while trying to, the witch goes off and one of the shelves comes falling down on them. Rowley runs out of the house with barely any clothes just as Frank gets home, and a news crew captures the whole moment. Frank gets mad at Greg for making the mess, and Susan later gets mad, because Greg and Rowley filmed right over a tape of Manny's first steps. As a result, Greg has to clean up the mess and do extra chores for a while. Rowley, on the other hand, drinks in his newfound fame and skips school to attend on-TV interviews with talk shows, much to Greg's dismay, as Rowley doesn't mention Greg at all.

  • This book is generally considered to be the worst in the series. Reasons include excessive amounts of filler, the boring and confusing plot, the video making plot not happening until the end, Greg getting punished more times than usual in the story, and possibly the main antagonist only appearing in 14 pages.
  • This is also the second book with the two colors yellow and orange from Dog Days and The Long Haul.
  • This is the second red book, with the first being the first book .
  • This is also the first book since Hard Luck where Rowley is shown in the character page.
  • This is the second book where Rowley's parents do not appear.
  • The entire introduction where Greg thinks his life is a TV show is a parody of The Truman Show . It is mentioned from Pages 1 to 15.
  • Spineticklers is a parody of Goosebumps .
  • Spineticklers #48, “Wake Me Up In The Year 3000” is a parody of Futurama . It was first mentioned on Page 41.
  • The complaints from moral guardians surrounding Underpants Bandits and Spinetinglers is a parody of the complaints surrounding Captain Underpants , by Dav Pilkey and Goosebumps by R. L. Stine.
  • "Night Of The Night Crawlers" is just Squirm , but with gummy worms, instead of real-life worms. The movie poster of this film is shown on Page 194.
  • There is a girl dressed like Hermoine Granger from the Harry Potter franchise at the Halloween party. She is first shown on Page 168 if you see well.
  • Maddox enjoys playing with Lego toys.
  • The idea of a clown in the ice cream truck is a parody of the clown scares.
  • I.M. Spooky is a parody of R. L. Stine.
  • Mrs. Graziano can be seen playing Freecell.
  • The ending where Greg wants to make a movie is based on The Blair Witch Project . Coincidentally, Blair Witch , a 2016 horror film, was released in the same year as this novel.
  • The book parodies famous myths a lot.
  • The scene where Greg dreams of being a turtle is a parody of Super Mario .
  • Greg saying that sometimes in later seasons of TV shows, a new main character is introduced to bump up the ratings is easily a reference to shows like Scooby-Doo, Fairly Oddparents and the Brady Bunch. Ironically, the addition of a new main character led to the downfall of all three shows.
  • Greg rarely wears shorts in this book, usually appearing in long pants or jeans.
  • The backpack tipping over Greg on the cover is meant to be an ode to the backpack that makes Greg slouch on the first book's cover.
  • This is also the first book with the new Amulet logo.
  • On Page 35, in the background, a group of kids is playing what may be "Girls Chase Boys".
  • This is the fourth book where Fregley does not appear.
  • This is the first time the spine uses two colors (Red-Orange and Yellow). The second is The Getaway (which uses the following two colors: Azure and Yellow-Green).
  • This is also the second odd-numbered book that doesn't have three words in its title (this book only has two words in its title). The first is also the first book, which doesn't have a title.
  • This is the first book in which Greg's tongue is shown on the cover. The second time it happened was in Diper Överlöde .
  • It is revealed Greg has more relatives.
  • Jeff Kinney said since the Long Haul's release, he wouldn't make the books continuous anymore, as of Greg getting his room back, and the Pig not wearing Manny's shorts or walking on his hind legs.
  • However, it is mentioned that Grandpa is on a date, and Greg did search the house to find him, because he hoped that he will help him. This probably means that he is still living with them but now has a minor role.
  • This is the first time since Hard Luck where the months don't skip from the previous book.
  • This is the first book since Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever where the month in the beginning is the same as the month at the end of the previous book.
  • This book reveals that the Pig can get sick if he eats candy corn, but doesn't get sick if he eats gummy worms.
  • This is the first book in which the color of the spine is different than that of the cover. The second is The Getaway .
  • Despite Manny appearing on the title page, he only appears on a few pages.
  • Despite Maddox being the main antagonist, he only appears on 14 pages.
  • Unlike I.M. Spooky , who wasn't a real person, R. L. Stine was a real person.
  • This is the last book to have the reviews on the back cover.
  • This is the first time the cheese appeared or was mentioned since Rodrick rules , 9 books prior.
  • This book is the sixth to be released in the 2010s, following The Ugly Truth , Cabin Fever , The Third Wheel , Hard Luck and The Long Haul .

Goofs/Errors [ ]

  • This error is referenced on page 69 of The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary: The Next Chapter , as a card on a table, reads, "Today's special: Roast roast beef."
  • In the book, Greg says that Nana worked as a waitress. However, in the preview, he says she worked as a nurse. (She might've changed jobs, but this is highly unlikely.)
  • On the top of page 49, the characters appear too short and Greg's mouth is larger than usual.
  • On page 94, Mrs. Selsam's leg is in a humanly impossible position, and her skirt is shown as only covering that one leg.

BOOK REVIEW: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down

bubble

Welcome to the last book review of 2016! We've got one more book for you to squeeze in before the end of the year. You'll never guess what it is.

(I mean, I know you already know, because you read the title of this post. And saw the picture up there. But we like being dramatic, okay?)

Drumroll, please... it's the newest book in the best-selling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series! This is book eleven in Jeff Kinney's hilarious series, and it was one of the most highly-anticipated titles of 2016.

Here to tell you all about it is Vivian, age 12. Take it away, Vivian!

Vivian's review

"The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is about a boy named Greg Hefley. Greg wants to be popular, but he never seems to fit in.

In this book (Double Down), Greg thinks that his whole life is being filmed like a movie.

Greg's best friend Rowley is very clumsy and even more dorky than Greg. But Rowley seems to be getting everything Greg wants. Rowley is in the middle school band, and so is a girl who Greg likes. The girl is having a party and says she is only going to invite people from the band. Greg has to find a way to get into her party. But will Greg's mom ruin everything for him, as she usually does?

I recommend this book for people who like humour. If you like books that are written in a diary form with drawings, then this book is for you!"

That's a wrap

There were some pretty great reads in 2016, weren't there? And don't tell anyone we told you, but 2017 is going to be pretty great for bookworms, too. See you then!

The pressure’s really piling up on Greg Heffley. His mom thinks video games are turning his brain to mush, so she wants her son to put down the controller and explore his “creative side.” As if that’s not scary enough, Halloween’s just around the corner and the frights are coming at Greg from every angle. When Greg discovers a bag of gummy worms, it sparks an idea. Can he get his mom off his back by making a movie . . . and will he become rich and famous in the process? Or will doubling down on this plan just double Greg’s troubles?
