- Careers at American Express
American Express is a multinational financial services company that was established in 1850 as a freight company, but has since expanded to become the fourth largest card network globally - just behind China UnionPay, Visa and Mastercard.
American Express, or Amex as it is also known, offers careers in the following business areas:
- Customer Service
- Sales and Relationship Management
- Analytics and Risk Management
- Travel & Lifestyle Customer Service
- Corporate Functions
With 55 offices worldwide, Amex offers financial services in 110 countries. Employees can choose to work in US and Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, and has been voted one of the Fortune 100 Global Best Companies to Work For, and one of the Best Workplaces for Millennials.
Employees at American Express benefit from a company focused on holistic mental, physical, and financial wellbeing, with medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, disability benefits, and care assistance alongside annual incentive awards based on individual and company performance.
The core values of American Express reflect not only how the business wants to be viewed by their customers, but also what the recruitment team will be looking for in an employee. Throughout the recruitment process, keep these values in mind. These are:
- We back our customers
- We make it great
- We do what's right
- We respect people
- We embrace diversity
- We stand for inclusion
- We win as a team
- We support our communities.
While there are many opportunities for experienced professionals, there are great options for students including undergraduate internships, graduate programmes, MBA internships, and technology apprenticeships - and these can all be applied for online.
- American Express Recruitment Process
Every application for open positions at Amex starts with an online application form. If you are unsure of the business area that might be most suitable for you, then you can upload your CV online to be matched to open roles that suit your skills, experience and education.
The stages and specific order of the application process will depend on the level of the role and business area you have applied for.
American Express Online Application
The online application follows a standard format, including uploading your CV and cover letter, and answering some basic questions about yourself, including contact details.
There will be some 'motivational' questions, looking for why you want to work at Amex, and this is a good place to begin demonstrating your passion for the role.
If your application is successful, you will be invited to the next stage of the application process (which depends on the programme you are applying for).
- American Express Aptitude Tests
There are several possible aptitude tests that you could be asked to complete, and the combination depends on the type of role you have applied for.
American Express Situational Judgement Test
In a situational judgement test , you are being assessed on the way you deal with problems in the workplace. You will be provided with a number of workplace scenarios, with several possible responses. These are fictional, but based on realistic experiences that you might face at work.
The scenarios will challenge you to decide on one of several possible courses of action, and the test will be timed so you cannot spend too long choosing. There is likely to be one or more answers that might seem to fit, so the best course of action is to ensure that you answer in the way that is most appropriate for you - bearing in mind the company values of Amex.
American Express Numerical Reasoning Test
As you will be working in the financial space if you are successful in your application, it is likely that you will be assessed on your numerical aptitude.
In a numerical reasoning test , it is not your mathematical ability that is being assessed; it is your ability to understand and analyse numerical data presented in graphs and tables. While calculations will need to be performed on this data, the answers presented are usually multiple choice and are based on GCSE-level mathematical theory and operations.
Each question will be based on a table or a graph, and to be successful you will need to quickly read and understand the data, and then perform any necessary calculations. These might be simple operations like multiplication or subtraction, but they might also involve ratios, percentages and fractions.
American Express Logical Reasoning Test
In the logical reasoning test , you are likely to be presented with a series of shapes, numbers, or pictures that follow a pattern. In most cases, you will be tasked to find the missing item in the sequence from a number of potential answers.
The images in the sequence will follow a logical pattern, which might include movement, size, colour, or any number of other differences. The timed test means that you will have to find the pattern and decide on the missing part of the sequence fast, using inference skills.
American Express Coding Skills Assessment
If you are applying for a technology position, such as an engineering internship or graduate programme - or the Technology Apprentice role - then you will be asked to undertake a short coding skills assessment.
The coding skills test is based on simple programming learning, to see how much knowledge you have in software, technology, and engineering.
American Express Virtual Video Interview
There are two types of video interview that you might be invited to, depending on the programme you have applied for.
American Express Pre-Recorded Video Interview
If you have applied for an undergraduate internship or as part of the graduate programme, then you will be required to answer a number of questions with pre-recorded video responses. The questions that are asked will be related to the job area applied for.
American Express Live Video Interview
If you have applied for an MBA Internship, then you will be asked to complete one or two consecutive 45-60 minute interviews with the American Express recruitment team. This should be considered an opportunity to demonstrate creativity and your skill set. Some of these interviews might be hosted by a panel of senior Amex staff.
American Express Virtual Assessment Centre
For graduate and internship opportunities, the final stage of the application process is a virtual assessment centre.
Along with other applicants, you will be invited to attend a series of activities hosted virtually. These include some competency-based interviews, where you will be asked to provide descriptions of scenarios and actions that you have taken to demonstrate your ability in that area.
There will also be a number of case studies that should be tackled through group work and presentations, and through these exercises you will be assessed by the recruitment team on your teamwork and communication, as well as your individual skills like analysis.

What Is American Express?
The American Express Company (Amex), with headquarters in New York City , was founded in 1850 as a freight company. It has since evolved into issuing traveler’s checks, to having cards, and now offers digital products and services. American Express recently partnered with Nova Credit to help extend credit to expats and recent immigrants and to the United States. American Express is rated #23 on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list, and they are #16 on Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies list.
What Is American Express’s Hiring Process?
Most applicants say the hiring process takes from 2 weeks to 2 months. The company is looking for employees who fit well with their teams and culture, so the interview process can sometimes by long.
Application Process
You will begin the application process by filling out the online application. Make sure to leave plenty of time so you can give thorough responses. If need be, you can save the application and return to it at another time.
American Express Assessments
Depending on the position for which you are applying, you may be asked to take one or more assessments. Common assessments are in numerical reasoning , verbal reasoning , logical reasoning , situational judgement, or a personality inventory . For technical positions, a coding assessment might be required.
Video Interview
You may be asked to make a 25-minute video in which you answer interview questions that have been given to you by AMEX recruiters.
In-Person Interview
The next step in the process will be the in-person interview. You may be asked to participate in group discussions, and to make a presentation. American Express likes to use behavioral interviews as a way to get to know their candidates in order to place them in a team where they will be successful for the long term. You can expect a lot of questions about prior work experiences. Be specific and refer to actual scenarios when answering the questions.

How to Prepare for the American Express Assessment?
American Express usually uses CEB/Gartner (SHL) assessments , but this could change based on where you are taking your assessment. You can ask about the assessment publisher when you begin the application process. There will more than likely be several sections to the assessment you take when applying to American Express.
- Numeric Reasoning: You will be asked to analyze data from graphs and tables. You can also expect questions on percentages, ratios, and computation. The test is in a multiple-choice format, and is measuring your ability to work with numbers.
- Verbal Reasoning: You will be asked to read a passage, then to answer questions that will require you to show comprehension, an ability to analyze text, and an ability to draw appropriate conclusions from written text. This test measures your ability to work with written text.
- Logical Reasoning: You will be asked questions relating to sequences of shapes and patterns. You will be asked to identify the missing step from multiple-choice responses. This assessment measures your logical reasoning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Situation Judgement: You will be presented with a series of scenarios that you might come up against in the workplace. You will be asked to choose from a list of possible responses to the situation as to which you think is the best response and how you would react. Learn more about SJT tests .
All of these tests will be timed, so taking practice tests will give you an advantage as you will be familiar with the test format and you will know what types of questions to expect. Always read the questions and responses carefully to ensure you are answering the question that is actually being asked.
You might also be asked to take a personality assessment to determine your character traits and give insight into your thought process.
The time it takes to prepare for assessments and interviews will be time well spent when you are offered a position at American Express.

Suitable for preparing for AMEX |
American Express (AMEX) is an American multinational global services company. Logical reasoning tests are a fair and objective way for AMEX to assess a wide range of applicants, each having different experiences and different qualifications. By analysing the results of a standardised logical reasoning test, AMEX are able to quickly see which candidates are suitable for the role and which are not. This sort of information about candidates’ skills is difficult to glean from interviews and qualifications alone, so they use professional psychometric tests.
AMEX Application Process Stages
Online Application | The first step is to submit an online application through the AMEX careers website to be considered. |
---|
Psychometric Tests | Eligible applications will be invited to take online psychometric tests designed to assess if a career with AMEX is right for you. |
---|
Video Interview | Following this, you will be asked to send in a 25-minute video answering specific interview questions from AMEX recruiters. |
---|
Assessment Center | Successful applicants will then be invited to an Assessment Centre where they will participate in interviews, group discussions and will present to multiple individuals on the AMEX to demonstrate communication, analytical and team skills. |

AMEX Logical Reasoning Test Questions
American Express usually uses SHL tests to test their applicants. However, this differ depending on the location and job role. Therefore, we would advise you to inquire about the test publisher and the tests that will be used.
Like most logical tests, the one used by AMEX look at your ability to interpret abstract data, such as patterns created from shapes and shades, and answer questions which require identification and extrapolation of these patterns. The logical test will be assessing your speed and accuracy. The answers are multiple choice and you should try to work quickly within the time limit, but also accurately. Negative marking is unlikely to be used but do not guess answers, as this will show up in your accuracy score. Sometimes you will find that you can make a best guess estimate by deducing that some of the answer options are incorrect. This approach to logical tests will come with practice, and you will become familiar with the type of logical tests used by companies such as AMEX.
Companies are using logical reasoning test more and more in their application process that candidates must go through. Logical reasoning tests are favoured to assess a candidate's general level of abstract intelligence or reasoning ability. A person's score in a logical reasoning test is a good indicator of their ability to work well with new concepts and to spot patterns. This can be important in any sector or position.
So as a graduate or senior candidate applying for a job at AMEX you might feel like the logical reasoning test is an unnecessary hoop to jump through. But you should bear in mind that AMEX are asking you to complete the logical test as much for your own benefit as theirs; if you are not suitable for the role, a psychometric test will usually identify this. Research has shown that psychometric tests, such as those used by AMEX, are a better predictor of job performance than traditional selection metrics such as level of degree achieved.
The logical operations required in standardised logical tests are of a level which most applicants can achieve. The difficult aspect comes with identifying the patterns, especially when there are multiple differences in each example of the pattern, quickly and accurately within the time limit. Here is a list of the most common operations you can expect in your logical test:
- Changes in size of shape
- Transformation
- Greyscale shading or other ways of making shapes more distinct
Most questions in most logical reasoning tests follow a standard format displaying a pattern of images, the question and answer options on screen. These can be arranged differently, but each test will stick to the same layout throughout. The images may contain shapes, such as squares, triangles, and circles, or more symbols, such as arrows, currency signs, and other special characters. The question text may contain extra information which adds to what's given in the sequence of images, this might also be necessary to answer the question correctly. You might have to guess which answer option is the next in the sequence, or which options represents a missing step in the sequence. Lastly, the answer options are almost always multiple choice. Multiple choice answers can vary, however. You may have 4 options to pick from, 5, maybe 10, or more. The more answer options to pick from, the slimmer the chances are that you can obtain the correct answer by guessing
How difficult are your tests?
The same difficulty as real tests. Generally real employer selection tests don't differ that much in terms of difficulty which is why they compare your score against norm groups. Our practice tests are pitched roughly at graduate level, but this means they are actually suitable for preparing for all levels of job: entry; apprentice; graduate; senior; director.
Are they compatible with my Mac / Tablet / Phone?
Yes, and PC, and Linux and smartphone and Android and...everything. Our practice tests will run on all systems and they are responsive so they will work well on tablets and smartphones too!
How many times can I take the tests?
Unlimited. You can take our practice tests as many times as you like; there is no limit. But to be honest, after taking the same test a few times you start to remember the answers, so that’s why we have lots of tests.

Firebase Test Lab for Android reduced American Express app test costs by 50%
Introduction.
The AMEX mobile app, with a million Android downloads, is used by Card Members to track spending and rewards, find offers, pay bills, and enjoy app-only features. To facilitate frequent updates, American Express built a device lab to test code changes in their app across all platforms before release.
With dozens of devices running various Android releases, the lab was tough to scale. Adding new tests decreased productivity because of the device lab's limited throughput, and when new team members joined, the increased number of code changes added even more load.
Maintaining the device lab was time-consuming and costly, diverting the attention of engineers who otherwise would have been focused on enhancements to drive additional value for Card Members. The devices commonly had issues that required manual intervention, often forcing reruns of the entire test suite. Problematic devices were regularly removed from the device lab, and replacing them often created down-time while the team awaited the arrival of new devices.
![american express case study test American Express logo](https://firebase.google.com/static/images/usecases/american_express_logo_alt.png)
During the product's alpha period, the frequency of updates to the AMEX app, commitment to high-quality releases, and willingness of engineers to collaborate provided an ideal environment for the Firebase Test Lab team. American Express, in turn, provided valuable feedback that helped to shape the released version of the product. Firebase Test Lab integrated with American Express' complex suite of hundreds of instrumentation tests. Even while Test Lab was in early development, American Express was able to switch all of their continuous integration testing to Test Lab and successfully retire much of their device lab. This enabled the engineers maintaining the devices to shift their focus to shipping new features to Card Members while also writing and running tests to ensure high product quality.
In addition, American Express was able to scale the number of tests without worrying about slowing down test-suite execution and scaling up a homegrown device lab. This includes handling surges in the number of tests as new team members join and generating additional code changes. American Express now runs over 1,000 instrumentation tests on every pull request, which equals hundreds of thousands of tests per public release. Running so many concurrent tests dramatically increases their ability to prevent new and recurring bugs, all thanks to Firebase Test Lab's ability to massively parallelize testing.
DISCLAIMER: Results may vary.

Firebase Test Lab enables American Express to execute our entire extensive Android test suite for every pull request. Firebase takes care of scaling the test infrastructure, so our engineers can focus on the code, driving improvements to the app and corresponding changes to our test suite."

At-Home COVID-19 Antigen Tests-Take Steps to Reduce Your Risk of False Negative Results: FDA Safety Communication
November 17, 2022, Update: The FDA took an additional action related to the need for repeat testing following a negative COVID-19 test result on COVID-19 antigen tests -- revising the emergency use authorizations (EUAs) of all authorized COVID-19 antigen tests on November 1, 2022. For details, see FDA Actions below.
Date Issued: August 11, 2022 (Updated November 17, 2022)
![Woman performing a COVID-19 test on a child Woman performing a COVID-19 test on a child](https://www.fda.gov/files/styles/landscape_16_9_400_x_225/public/COVID-SafetyComm.jpg?itok=FaiqnQ6G)
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising people to perform repeat testing, also called serial testing, following a negative result on any at-home COVID-19 antigen test, to reduce the risk an infection may be missed (false negative result) and to help prevent people from unknowingly spreading the SARS-CoV-2 virus to others. The FDA recommends repeat testing following a negative result whether or not you have COVID-19 symptoms.
At-home COVID-19 antigen tests detect proteins, called antigens, from the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. At-home COVID-19 antigen tests are less likely to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus than molecular tests, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. This is especially true early in an infection or in people who do not have COVID-19 symptoms. Currently, all at-home COVID-19 antigen tests are FDA-authorized for repeat use. This means people should use multiple tests over a certain time period, such as 2-3 days, especially when the people using the tests don't have COVID-19 symptoms. Today, the FDA is highlighting the continued need for repeat testing when people get a negative result with an at-home COVID-19 antigen test, including recommending additional testing over a longer period of time.
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, public health scientists have continued to learn about the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the impact of variants on diagnostic tests that detect SARS-CoV-2. Today's recommendations are based on the latest study results from people with likely omicron infection showing that repeat testing after a negative at-home COVID-19 antigen test result increases the chance of an accurate result. COVID-19 diagnostic testing remains a cornerstone of our nation's fight against COVID-19. At-home COVID-19 antigen tests, while not perfect, provide a fast and convenient COVID-19 testing option.
Recommendations:
Before you use a covid-19 antigen test:.
- Be aware that at-home COVID-19 antigen tests are less accurate than molecular tests. COVID-19 antigen tests may not detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus early in an infection, meaning testing soon after you were exposed to someone with COVID-19 could lead to a false-negative result, especially if you don't have symptoms. This is the reason why repeat testing is important.
- If you plan to use at-home COVID-19 antigen tests, have several tests on hand so you can test more than once. You do not need to use the same brand of test each time for repeat testing. Visit At-Home OTC COVID-19 Diagnostic Tests for a list of all FDA-authorized home tests and for more information about who can use a test and for what ages.
- Be aware the FDA expects similar performance with Point of Care (POC) COVID-19 antigen tests performed at a clinic or doctor's office. A negative POC COVID-19 antigen test result should also be followed up with repeat testing and an at-home test could be used.
When you use an at-home COVID-19 antigen test:
Follow the test's step by step instructions exactly to perform the test and to read the test's results.
After you use an at-home COVID-19 antigen test:
- Follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance for people with COVID-19, including to stay home, isolate from others, and seek follow-up care with a health care provider to determine the next steps.
- If you get a negative result on the second test and you are concerned that you could have COVID-19, you may choose to test again 48 hours after the second test, consider getting a laboratory molecular-based test, or call your health care provider.
- If you get a negative result on the second test, test again 48 hours after the second test.
- If you get a negative result on the third test and you are concerned that you could have COVID-19, you may choose to test again using an antigen test, consider getting a laboratory molecular-based test, or call your health care provider.
- If you get a positive result on any repeat test with an at-home COVID-19 antigen test , you most likely have COVID-19 and should follow the CDC guidance for people with COVID-19.
COVID-19 diagnostic tests detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus. There are at-home COVID-19 diagnostic tests that are FDA-authorized for self-testing at home, or anywhere. The FDA has authorized both molecular and antigen COVID-19 diagnostic tests for home use.
Overall performance of at-home COVID-19 antigen tests
Most at-home COVID-19 tests are antigen tests and do not detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus as well as molecular tests, most of which are laboratory-based such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Molecular COVID-19 tests are generally expected to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus at least 95% of the time when someone is infected. However, at-home COVID-19 antigen tests are generally expected to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus at least 80% of the time when someone is infected.
When you perform an at-home COVID-19 antigen test, and you get a positive result, the results are usually accurate. However, if you perform an at-home COVID-19 antigen test, you could get a false negative result. This means that the test may not detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus that is in your nasal swab sample. This could happen if you test soon after you get an infection, especially if you don't have COVID-19 symptoms . If you receive a false negative test result, you may unknowingly spread the SARS-CoV-2 virus to others.
Studies to better understand at-home COVID-19 antigen test performance
When at-home COVID-19 antigen tests were initially FDA-authorized, the FDA knew that for people to get accurate results, test instructions would need to include directions for repeat testing. The FDA believed the best way to better understand COVID-19 infections and evaluate test accuracy was to require test developers to perform follow up studies with their tests. The studies would need to assess how well COVID-19 antigen tests could detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus, especially in people without COVID-19 symptoms. Therefore, the FDA required each at-home COVID-19 antigen test manufacturer to assess how well their test works when used by people with and without COVID-19 symptoms following repeat testing instructions.
In parallel, the FDA collaborated with the National Institutes for Health (NIH) and the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and together they designed a comprehensive study to assess at-home COVID-19 antigen test performance. The study was funded by the NIH's Rapid Acceleration Diagnostics (RADx) Program and included more than 7,000 participants. The results of the study would be available as a resource to all at-home COVID-19 antigen test manufacturers.
The study participants collected their nasal sample and performed an at-home COVID-19 antigen test. Participants who got a negative test result performed repeat testing every 48 hours, over 14 days. All participants also collected their nasal sample using a home collection kit and then sent the sample to a clinical laboratory for testing with an FDA-authorized molecular test. The study compared the performance of at-home COVID-19 antigen tests to performance of a laboratory-based molecular test. Results from this study show that repeat testing over a longer timeframe improves test performance and increases the likelihood that an at-home COVID-19 antigen test will detect an infection. These results have further guided the FDA's thinking that repeat testing after a negative result with an at-home COVID-19 antigen test reduces the risk of a false negative result.
FDA Actions
On November 1, 2022, based on the data discussed in this safety communication, the FDA revised the authorized uses and required updates to the labeling for all currently authorized COVID-19 antigen tests regarding repeat testing after a negative COVID-19 test result.
For additional information about the EUA revision, visit: Antigen EUA Revisions for Serial (Repeat) Testing
For additional information about at-home tests, visit: At-Home OTC COVID-19 Diagnostic Tests
The FDA is committed to assuring appropriately accurate and reliable at-home COVID-19 diagnostic tests for all Americans and will keep the public informed if significant new information about COVID-19 antigen test performance becomes available.
Reporting Problems with Your Device
If you think you had a problem with your COVID-19 test, the FDA encourages you to report the problem through the MedWatch Voluntary Reporting Form .
Health care personnel employed by facilities that are subject to the FDA's user facility reporting requirements should follow the reporting procedures established by their facilities.
If you have questions, email the Division of Industry and Consumer Education (DICE) at [email protected] or call 800-638-2041 or 301-796-7100.
