Housing & Residential Life

New undergrad application process, welcome new students.

All the  housing options for first-year students  are located on North Campus, convenient to several dining rooms, a café, a convenience store and many recreational spaces and support services. North Campus is in walking distance of most buildings where you will have classes. The TCAT bus system, which is free for first-year students, picks up at several locations on North Campus. Most first-year students do not bring cars to campus. It’s easy to get around by walking, biking or riding the bus.

Housing options for new transfer students  are located in each area of campus - West, North, South, program houses - within easy access to dining options, classrooms, and study spaces.

The new student application for 2024-2025 academic year will open April 3, 2024.

Newly admitted students for the 2024-2025 academic year are required to live on campus.  Newly admitted first-year students are encouraged to submit their completed application by June 2. You'll need your activated NetID to apply and are encouraged to apply within ten days of receiving your NetID. (Transfer students should apply for housing within ten days of receiving your NetID.)

Log in to the Housing Portal to apply

When you're in the housing portal you’ll have these options:

  • Decide whether you want to live in a program house or a residence hall. Program houses  are living-learning communities that are either interest- or identity-based. Residence halls  at Cornell vary in format, but all include support from staff and faculty.
  • Indicate room type preferences. First-year and transfer students may request to live in a single, double, triple, or quad. We will do our best to assign you to your preferred room type.
  • Tell us about yourself or your preference for a roommate. Complete a brief questionnaire about your lifestyle and habits to help us match you with a roommate; or you can provide a name of a particular student. We will attempt to fill your request but cannot guarantee it. Most students do not have roommates before they apply for housing.

Once you receive your housing assignment

Once you’ve received your housing assignment your next step is to sign your housing license. We ask that you sign your license promptly so you can select your arrival timeslot for move in and finalize your travel plans.

Please note that we will be full for the 2024-2025 academic year and are not able to accept room change requests. Students interested in a different room are encouraged to participate in the direct room swap process. Room Swap is available to any student with a signed housing license and is available via the housing portal during the month of July.

Over 500 first-year and transfer students will live in Program Houses

“I chose Ujamaa because I felt very much like an outsider at Cornell and wanted to connect more with a community I can relate to.”   “I was passionate about environmentalism coming into college and wanted to learn more about what I could do to make a positive impact on our planet.” These are some of the reasons students have chosen Program Houses.

In addition:

  • You may indicate your interest in a female-only community.
  • You may opt in to mixed-gender housing. First you’ll need to view a video and agree to the rules. Read more about  gender-inclusive housing .
  • If you require accessible housing for a disability/chronic health-related reason, you must register with Student Disability Services (SDS). In order to ensure that you are assigned to housing that is accessible to you, we recommend initiating the registration process with SDS  before May 15  to allow adequate time for SDS to review your request. For information on how to register with SDS, please visit sds.cornell.edu . Questions? Contact SDS (phone 607-254-4545 , email [email protected] )

NOTE: Unless you're applying to live in a program house, the decision about which residence hall you'll be in is determined by a random auto-allocation process, based on your preferences.  You will not rank residence halls.

Transfer Students

Transfer students are able to preference the West Campus House System, South Campus Residence Halls and Program Houses. You will have plenty of peers and a strong support system. Almost 15% of new incoming students are transfers.

There is no fee to apply for housing

The housing costs will appear on the bursar bill. Students will be billed in July or August for fall-semester housing, and in December for spring-semester housing. Prices vary based on type of room. Read about  housing rates .

Housing Assignment Process

First-year medical students in WCM housing are assigned to Olin Hall , which is across the street from our main campus. First-year PhD students may be assigned to Olin Hall or Memorial Sloan Kettering residences .

After the first year, Olin Hall residents move to other Weill Cornell buildings. Housing reassignments are typically determined by a lottery, which takes place in the spring of every academic year. You can submit an application indicating your preferred building, apartment type, and the names of fellow students they would like to live with, if applicable.

Students are placed based on their position in the lottery and apartment availability. Moves are typically scheduled before the start of the following academic year. We strive to meet as many students’ preferences as possible, but we are unable to accommodate every request.

If you are a current student, you’ll receive an email from us every spring with details about the lottery application and your housing options.

Disability Accommodations

The Weill Cornell Medical College’s (which includes the Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences) Disability Services are dedicated to providing equal educational opportunities for students with disabilities. Federal law states that no qualified student will be excluded, denied participation or subjected to discrimination from any program or activity.

For more information, please  review the disability accommodation request guidelines .  Please do not submit any medical or other documentation regarding a disability to the Housing Office.

With housing lottery time slots released and available to view on their housing portals, students who need to apply for on-campus housing next year are anxiously awaiting room selection to start on March 13.

According to Kristen Loparco, director of Housing and Dining Contracts, students apply for housing in early January. In the application, students can make six-person roommate ‘blocks’ and assign block leaders, who are responsible for distributing beds to each person in the block.

“In early March, all students who applied will be issued a time slot. All members of a roommate group have the same time slot,” Loparco wrote in an email to The Sun. “During the allotted time, students will log in to the housing portal to select rooms.”

Students can live in three main areas — North Campus , South Campus and West Campus . Due to proximity and access to dining halls, West Campus housing is often most desirable and the first to run out of spots.

“It’s a sprint to get on West Campus with your friends,” said Claire Williamson ’25.

To ensure fairness, a lottery system randomly issues 20-minute time slots across three days to each student who applied to live in an on-campus residence hall. This system has caused stress among Cornelians, especially those with late time slots on March 15, the last day for selection.

Analisa Martino ’26 has a timeslot on the last day of selection. Martino expressed concern that students will fill all the spots in the newer North and West Campus buildings during the earlier time slots.

“[The lottery] is not a hundred percent fair because there are these new buildings that are super nice and then there [are] buildings that can’t even compare,” Martino said. “Obviously everyone’s going to go for the good buildings at the beginning.”

Martino also noted that dorm quality does not factor into the price students pay for on-campus housing. She suggests an alternative method of distributing housing slots, one she believes is more fair.

“It could be first come first serve, where people who have their applications submitted first get first pick,” Martino said.

With concerns over time slots and a general preference for either North or West Campus, students can turn to Cornell Housing for support.

Emma Cruz and Myranda Anderson, housing operation coordinators, held a series of housing selection demo events to answer students’ questions about general housing selection for the 2023-2024 academic year. They quickly sensed students were anxious about the upcoming selection.

“I know you all are stressed and we’re here for you a hundred percent,” Cruz said at the event.

The event covered how to submit applications and bedding preferences and included a question and answer period. Students were encouraged to reach out to Cornell Housing with questions and concerns at any point before, during or after general housing selection.

Cruz encouraged students to utilize the Bed Availability Report throughout the housing selection process, which updates every 15 minutes to reflect which rooms are still available.

Students inquired on what they could do if they no longer want to be in the roommate block they are currently enrolled in.

“The block leader does the assigning of all the rooms — however, if you log in at the time of the time slot, that breaks the block for you,” Cruz said.

Cruz also explained that South Campus tends to be underrated in the general student body’s opinion, but the free bus passes and quick access to Collegetown Bagels in Sheldon Court can be appealing.

“South doesn’t get the love it deserves,” Cruz said. “South is beautiful.”

Ultimately, if a student is not happy with their housing situation after they select their room, they can try to get into a different room.

“Students are welcome to participate in our online summer assignment swap process to try to swap with another student. Students will be emailed in late May or early June with [a] timeline and instructions for participation,” Loparco wrote.

While students are anxious to select their housing preferences, most are equally excited to see where they will live on campus next year.

“Either way, no matter where I end up, I can’t wait to live with or near my closest friends,” Martino said.

Cornell University Dorms: What They’re Like from a Current Student

What’s Covered:

Cornell university dorms: an overview, freshman dorms, best and worst dorms at cornell university, housing selection at cornell university, my dorm experience at cornell university, what are your chances at cornell university.

If you’re entering Cornell in Fall 2021 or later, you will be experiencing Cornell’s completely renovated dorm housing! Cornell’s North Campus expansion is adding 2,000 beds on campus as well as new dining halls and recreation spaces. Students matriculating in 2021 will be able to live in 2 of the brand new buildings on North Campus.

My name is Juliette and I’m a current senior at Cornell studying Industrial & Labor Relations. Here’s everything you need to know about dorm life and housing at Cornell!

One of the best parts about living at Cornell is that underclassmen live together in the same area of campus. This makes it easy for new students to make friends with other people who are also away from home for the first time. All freshmen (and starting this fall, some sophomores) live on North Campus, a residential community that lies on the north end of Cornell’s campus.

All freshmen are required to live on campus for their first year, and Cornell provides guaranteed housing for sophomores as well, but they are not required to live on campus. By junior and senior year, most students move off campus and into Collegetown, a neighborhood south of campus. Typically, living off campus is less expensive, but the tradeoff is that you do not have a meal plan. This can be a drawback since Cornell is constantly rated as having some of the best campus food in the country!

Cornell has many different housing options depending on your class year and the type of accommodations you’re looking for.

As a first year student, you can choose to live in the traditional North Campus residences or one of the Program Houses, which are themed residences. Sophomores can also live in Program Houses, traditional residences, or Co-Op Housing.

The set up of each room is very different. On North campus, students can live in suites, singles, doubles, or triples. Program Houses vary by layout but most are comprised of singles and doubles.

All rooms come furnished with a twin bed (extra long), closet, bureau, desk, chair, lamp, and wastebasket.

Traditional freshman dorms are located on North Campus, but some freshmen choose to apply to live in Program Houses.

North Campus freshman housing includes:

  • Clara Dickson Hall
  • Court-Kay-Bauer Hall
  • Ganędagǫ: Hall
  • High Rise #5
  • Jameson Hall
  • Low Rise #6
  • Low Rise #7
  • Mary Donlon Hall
  • Toni Morrison Hall
  • Townhouse Community

North Campus is about a 15 minute walk to Central Campus, but it is easy to take the TCAT bus to get to Central in the mornings and after class. Each of the residences above offer different layouts and room types. Most dorm rooms are doubles, but there are also suites, singles, and triples.

The Program Houses include:

  • Ecology House
  • Holland International Living center (HILC)
  • Just About Music (JAM)
  • Latino Living Center (LLC)
  • Loving House
  • Multicultural Living Learning Unit (McLLU)
  • Risley Residential College
  • Ujamaa Residential College
  • Language House

Program Houses are special residential communities that unite students from different class years who have a common hobby, culture, or interest. I never lived in a program house, but I had many friends who did. My friends said they easily found community within their program houses and loved being able to share common interests with those they lived with.

It is impossible to say which dorms are the best since 2 new dorms were created just this year! I would say that High Rise, Jameson, or the Low Rises are less desirable simply because they are older and have many triples. With that said, I loved my experience living in a suite in High Rise and have so many fun memories from living there.

You are allowed to request a roommate your freshman year, or Cornell Housing can match you with a roommate based on your responses to a form asking about your living habits and preferences. Cornell Housing assigns buildings to all students, so you can’t choose your freshman year dorm.

Below is a list of all dorms at Cornell.

North Campus:

Program Houses:

West Campus:

  • Alice Cook House
  • Carl Becker House
  • Flora Rose House
  • Hans Bethe House
  • William Keeton House

It is important to note that the West Campus Houses are comprised of newer buildings and older residence halls. The older halls are called The Gothics and are affiliated with the Houses. Unlike the nicer houses, the Gothics are small dorms with communal bathrooms and no air conditioning.

For example, the dorm building called Baker Tower is technically part of Alice Cook House, but it is not located in the newer Alice Cook building, rather it is just affiliated with Alice Cook. During Cornell’s sophomore housing selection, it is clear what is a “Gothic” and what rooms are located in the actual House.

Discover your chances at hundreds of schools

Our free chancing engine takes into account your history, background, test scores, and extracurricular activities to show you your real chances of admission—and how to improve them.

South Campus:

  • Cascadilla Hall
  • 112 Edgemoor
  • Schuyler House
  • Sheldon Court

Co-Op Housing:

  • Prospect of Whitby
  • 660 Stewart
  • Triphammer Cooperative
  • Von Cramm Hall
  • Wait Avenue Cooperative (302 Wait Avenue)
  • Wait Terrace (308 Wait Avenue)
  • Wari Cooperative
  • Watermargin

Generally, the nicer dorms are newer and have amenities such as air conditioning, which is useful for Ithaca’s hot summer weather from late May to mid-September.

Something important to consider is how far away you are comfortable living from campus. Some housing on South Campus (especially Schuyler House) is at least a 30 minute uphill walk from Central Campus. When picking housing locations, be sure to check how far the building is from your campus, as well as the topography of the area. Cornell is notorious for steep hills, so you may want to consider this as you start your housing search.

The best traditional dorms are located on North Campus and West Campus. On North Campus,  Court Kay Bauer and Mews, as well as the newer buildings (e.g. Ganędagǫ and Toni Morrison Hall), are all great options. Additionally, any of the “Houses” on West Campus are desirable, as long as you are not in the Gothics.

It is important to note that Cornell has a significant Greek Life population that tends to live in Greek housing for at least one year.

Freshman who want to live in traditional residence halls are placed randomly, but students living in Program Houses must apply. Sophomore year is a bit different since students must go through the housing lottery to secure a spot for the next year. Generally, students will “block” with up to 6 students total. This means that students will be assigned a housing slot to sign up with their friends. At the time of their sign up, the “block” of students will pick the building that they want to live in together.

Sophomores prefer to be on West Campus due to its proximity to dining halls, but those who receive a late time slot during the lottery usually get spots in South Campus or decide to live in Collegetown to be closer to campus.

It is important to note that students living on West Campus must sign up for an unlimited meal plan. It may seem undesirable at first, but having an unlimited meal plan is actually really nice because the food on West Campus is so good! It is also difficult to cook in the West Campus dorms since they are so small, so it is very convenient to have a meal plan.

I had a fantastic dorm experience my freshman year at Cornell! I was assigned to High Rise 5, and was placed in a double in a suite. It was so easy to get to know the people in my suite and they are still some of my closest friends today. In fact, my entire floor remained exceptionally close–we still keep in touch years later!

when does cornell housing assignments come out

The double that I lived in was very large for the size (there was about 12 feet between my bed and my roommate’s bed) and I had a giant closet. The only downside was that there was no air conditioning and it got pretty hot during the day at the beginning of the year.

I also really enjoyed living on North Campus. At first, I was concerned about living far from Central Campus, but living with all freshmen on North was such a fantastic experience since we were all adjusting to college together. I met new friends all across North Campus–in my dorm, in the common areas, and at the dining halls.

As an upperclassman, I now live in Collegetown, which is different but also very fun. I’m close to many eateries and most of my friends live within a block or two from me. The walk to campus is actually closer than it was when I was on North, which is also great.

Cornell University’s acceptance rate is 11%, but your actual chances may be higher or lower depending on your profile.

What are disability-related housing accommodations?

A disability is defined as a condition that impacts one or more major life functions (such as walking, breathing, learning, hearing, thinking, etc.).

Examples of disability-related housing accommodations:

  • A wheelchair-accessible room
  • A ground floor room, or a room near an elevator
  • Access to a private bathroom, or a low-use shared bathroom
  • Strobe alarms in the room

What to know about Cornell housing

The residence halls on campus vary widely in features.

  • Not all buildings have elevators.
  • Most do not have air conditioning.
  • Many are carpeted.
  • Only some are newer buildings.
  • Single-occupancy rooms are limited.
  • Bathrooms are generally shared with other students in your suite or on your floor (numbers vary).
  • Pets are not allowed ( emotional support animals allowed by prior permission only).

Housing on campus is not guaranteed for juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students. Approval of a disability-related housing accommodation does not grant priority to live on campus for those students.

If you have a religion-related housing request, visit Cornell's page on Religious Observance Accommodations to make that request.

Requesting Disability-Related Housing Accommodations

Step 1: apply for campus housing.

  • For students not in Ithaca, follow the process for your program.
  • If you currently live on campus, make sure you follow all housing directions and deadlines about securing a housing contract for the upcoming year. See "Important Info" below.

Step 2: Determine What to Request

  • In order to make an informed disability accommodation request, learn about the different types of features available in Cornell housing . You will need to identify your specific disability-related housing needs.

Step 3: Request Disability-Related Housing Accommodations

  • Complete the SDS Housing Accommodation Request Form

Step 4: Await Communication from SDS

  • Monitor your Cornell email for communication.
  • Ithaca undergraduate students: If your assigned housing does not meet your SDS-approved housing accommodations, refer to the next steps in your approval email.

It is best for us to receive complete information from you by a certain date  in order to facilitate the accommodation process:

Newly-admitted freshmen and transfer students

  • Fall admits: May 15
  • Spring admits: December 15

Rising sophomores

  • New and additional requests: February 1
  • Students with current disability housing accommodations: see "Important Info" below

Rising Juniors/Seniors

  • See "Important Info" below for deadlines

Graduate and professional students :

  • Housing options are limited. Start the registration process with our office as soon as you have confirmed your admission to Cornell.

After the deadline: If you make a disability-related housing accommodation request, we will still review it. However, at that point housing assignments may have already been finalized, or availability may be limited or even sold out.

If you are looking to continue existing housing disability accommodations , please see important info below for those timelines.

Important Info to Continue Housing Accommodations for Next Year

What you need to do.

You should check your current accommodations by logging into SDS Online Services and clicking on “Housing Accommodation” on the left side of the webpage.

If your listed accommodations meet your disability access needs :

  • Submit the Residential Application via the Housing Portal and complete any other applicable steps with Housing and Residential Life.
  • Please do not fill out any new request forms on the SDS website for housing.

If your listed accommodations do not meet your disability access needs , and you need to request new or additional accommodations:

  • Please complete an SDS Housing Accommodation Request Form  and submit any relevant documentation by February 1. Requests received later will not be able to be reviewed before Housing sends out SDS-facilitated room offers.
  • Submit the Residential Application via the Housing Portal and complete any other applicable steps with Housing and Residential Life.

What You Need to Know About On-Campus Housing for Sophomore Year

  • Second year students are required to live on campus. Learn about the on-campus residential options for rising sophomores .
  • All students, including those with approved SDS housing accommodations, must complete the Residential Application via the Housing Portal . Housing and Residential Programs will be sending out several emails. Make sure to follow all the instructions and meet all the deadlines given.
  • Your currently approved housing accommodations carry over to your sophomore year (with the exception of Emotional Support Animal accommodations ).
  • Current first year students approved for SDS Housing accommodations will receive an SDS-facilitated room offer for Fall 2024 Housing directly from Housing in early March 2024.
  • Accepting a housing offer via this process means that you would NOT participate in the general room selection/time slot/blocking process that happens in mid-March. You will receive your SDS-facilitated room offer/assignment prior to the general room selection process so you will have the opportunity to decide which you’d rather do: accept the SDS facilitated offer, or decline and participate in general room selection instead. Please understand that the SDS-facilitated room offer will be a room that meets your disability-related needs, but not necessarily your roommate, room type, and building preferences . Housing will do their best to meet your preferences if you follow their directions.
  • If you do not accept the SDS-facilitated room offer, you are declining accessible housing and you will need to live in whatever room you select during rising sophomore room selection . You will not receive a second offer after room selection if you decline an SDS-facilitated offer prior to selection. Accepting the SDS-facilitated room offer is the only way to guarantee placement in a room that meets your disability access needs.

If you have any questions about your accessible housing for next year, please contact us as soon as possible. Please remember to monitor your emails for important messages and reminders regarding housing.

What to Know

What you need to know about choosing on-campus housing and disability housing accommodations:

  • On-campus housing is not guaranteed for juniors and seniors
  • You won't be placed ahead of room selection. Instead, you must self-select a room during the process that is open to all students currently living on campus.
  • If your current room assignment meets your disability access needs, your best chance at securing a room that meets your needs is to participate in "Same Room Selection" and/or "Same Building/Community Selection."
  • You are responsible for self-selecting a room and contacting the Housing and Residential Life Office if it does not meet your SDS-approved accommodations. You do not need to re-apply for disability-related housing accommodations through SDS (unless your accommodation needs have changed).
  • If you do not secure a spot on campus through the room selection process , you will need to arrange to live off campus.

How to Continue Using Disability-Related Housing Accommodations

Follow these steps if you are already approved for a housing accommodation through SDS and you wish to live on campus next year:

Participate and sign a contract through one of the following processes: (See Housing and Residential Life’s website for dates)

  • Same Room Selection and Roommate Pull-in
  • Same Building/Community Selection and Roommate Pull-in
  • General Room Selection

Note: If your RHD/HAD lets you know that your current room is not eligible for Same Room Selection, please complete the "Housing Accommodations" form on the Housing and Residential Life Office's Help page ASAP.

  • Should you select a room that does not meet your access needs, complete the appropriate "Housing Accommodations" form on the Housing and Residential Life Office's Help page to explore your options.

The Housing and Residential Life will be sending out emails and has information on their website ; please review that information and your responsibilities carefully. Please note that all students must complete the Residential Application via the Housing Portal .

Amenities offered in graduate/professional student housing is different than what was available in undergraduate housing. For example, all students in graduate housing have their own bedrooms. There are different air control options as well.

Due to the different amenities available, you may no longer need disability-related housing accommodations.

What you should do:

  • Review the amenities of the graduate/professional student housing available at your program.
  • If you will still need a disability-related housing, submit a new SDS Housing Accommodation Request Form .

If you are requesting to bring an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) to live with you on campus, or need to renew an ESA previously approved by Cornell University SDS, please review Emotional Support Animal page on our website for more information.   Unlike other disability-related housing accommodations, approval to have an ESA in campus housing has to be approved by SDS and renewed on a yearly basis . Approval does not carry over from one year to the next.

If you have been approved for this accommodation at Cornell before, SDS will reach out to you over the summer to see if you desire to renew that accommodation. Watch your Cornell email for communication and please follow up with any requests from our office for forms or information.

Duke University is not liable for damage or loss of personal property kept in the resident’s assigned space or in other areas of University housing. Because the University does not provide property insurance, residents are encouraged to secure their own personal property insurance.

All Duke students should consider purchasing renters insurance to protect their personal property in the event that it is damaged, destroyed or stolen. Even if a student is a dependent under his or her parent's insurance, the student's personal property, may not be covered.

Talk with your parents. They should check their policy or contact their insurance agent to see what coverage you have and if renters insurance is right for you while away at school.

Housing and Residence Life (HRL) works in conjunction with the Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) to ensure consistency in evaluating special housing accommodation requests. The Student Disability Access Office reviews requests and shares approved student accommodations with HRL. Students with approved accommodations will be offered priority for placement in an available space that meets their accommodations.

Students who wish to be considered for reasonable accommodations must submit current documentation (i.e., medical/educational/diagnostic reports) from licensed physicians, psychologists, or other qualified professionals as well as supporting historical records and materials. For the purpose of receiving consideration for reasonable accommodations at Duke University, an individual must have an impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Information regarding the process to request an accommodation can be found on the Student Disability and Access Office  website .

Housing and Residence Life is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals of sexual misconduct. HRL will work with campus resources (Gender Violence Prevention & Intervention and the Office of Institutional Equity) and students to ensure appropriate housing options.

Housing exceptions may involve moving an individual between Duke residential areas. Housing exceptions are done on a case-by-case basis. Not all incidents will result in a move, however, if the living situation is creating a hostile environment, every effort will be made to assist with reassigning students to a similar housing situation on campus. Students should contact the Gender Violence Prevention & Intervention and the Office of Institutional Equity for assistance.

Housing and Residence Life will make good faith efforts to meet a student’s sincerely held faith practices or beliefs that conflict with a Housing and Residence Life policy, procedure, or  other  requirement. For specific housing assignment exceptions, students may submit a request for a faith-based/religious housing exception.

Faith-based / Religious exceptions are not guaranteed but will be allowed as space permits.

Please note: Requesting exceptions for religious purposes is separate from the disability accommodations process. If you are seeking housing exceptions for religious purposes and accommodations for medical conditions or disabilities, please also follow the process for requesting SDAO housing accommodations.

Duke also offers alternative move-in days for students who for religious reasons do not want to move in on either Saturday or Sunday or for whom the arrangements do not enable them to comply with their religious obligations. Students will not be penalized financially for not moving in on "move-in day" should the day/time conflict with observance of a religious holiday.

For students requesting items inside a residence hall be modified for religious observance (motion sensors, Shabbat entry) please submit a Maintenance Request and Housing and Residence Life will do our best to support all requests.

Students participating in housing processes which conflict with religious observances may contact the Housing Assignments Office for options on how to navigate. Housing Assignments my offer proxy options for room selection processes.

Assignment Policies

The forfeiture of housing eligibility occurs when a student is withdrawn from the University or is academically dismissed.

HRL will cancel housing assignments based on attrition information from the deans or program participation information from the Office of Study Abroad. The student will become eligible for housing when they are readmitted as a full-time degree seeking student.

  • Room Selection: Students who are not yet confirmed to be returning for the Fall semester may participate in room selection for Fall. If you are not an active student by July, your housing assignment will be cancelled and all associated rent and fees will be credited to your Bursar account.
  • Spring Housing: Students must be confirmed to be returning in order to request and receive a Spring housing assignment.

Full-Time Student Status Full-time undergraduate students who have lived on-campus for under eight semesters are eligible for housing. Students entering their ninth or greater semester may request housing, but will only be assigned if space is available after assigning students covered by the four-year housing guarantee.

2023-2024 Housing License & Terms

2024-2025 Housing License & Terms

North Carolina State Law (General Statutes §130A 152–157) requires that all students entering college present a certificate of immunization that documents that the student has received all immunizations required by law. While your state or country of origin may have different immunization requirements, you must comply with North Carolina laws and Duke requirements. More information can be found at the Student Health, Immunization Compliance  website .

Housing and Residence Life has worked with students and staff from Blue Devils United and the  Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity  to create new housing options that will help meet the needs of all students with respect to their gender identity and expression. Our similar-gender and all-gender housing configurations will provide continuing undergraduate students with increased opportunities to select housing that best supports their gender identity and expression.

All gender housing refers to individual rooms or suites where the gender of the roommates is not taken into consideration when the room is assigned through the assignment process. All gender housing is located across East and the Upperclass Campuses. While this is intended to support students who identify as LGBTQIA, this is available to all students who feel they would be more comfortable in a all gender room/suite or feel they could provide a safe and inclusive space for another student regardless of gender identity/expression, sexual/romantic orientation, or any other factor.

West Campus students are now able to select a housing space with any continuing student - regardless of that student’s gender identity. The majority of space within each Quad will have bedrooms where roommates may share similar gender identities and live on floors where the students next door may not share their gender identity. Each floor with all-gender housing configurations will have gender non-specific and gender-specific restrooms. In addition, each Quad will also include options for similar-gender suites/floors and all-gender suites/floors to provide more choices for students to find the space that is right for them.

If you have questions or need support in navigating these new housing options, please feel free to connect with the  Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity  ([email protected]) or  Housing Assignments  ([email protected]).

All students are required—to the extent that housing is available—to live on campus for their first three years. We will continue to apply semesters spent in “study away” programs toward the three-year residency requirement. Students are guaranteed the opportunity to live on campus during their fourth year. (See note below.)

Students may choose to live off campus at the completion of their third year. Students who wish to live off campus must notify Housing and Residence Life (HRL) in writing of their plans by the published deadlines. Students choosing to live off campus should be aware that they will be subject to all city ordinances, particularly those related to occupancy, noise, parking, and litter.

Active students still bound by the three-year requirement who do not have an on-campus housing assignment will be contacted to make arrangements for an assignment. Students will be charged for the room size to which they are assigned. Students who do not follow through on an assignment request will be charged for the room size most commonly occupied by members of their class year.

Note: Our long-term goal is to provide on-campus housing for all students during their first three years and for any senior who wishes to remain on campus. However, new construction and renovations may result in a temporary shortfall in housing availability. In some cases we may modify the three-year residency requirement, resulting in some juniors as well as some seniors living off campus. In addition, during the new construction and renovation process the university may temporarily suspend the four-year housing guarantee for seniors. We look forward ultimately to providing housing to any seniors who wish to remain on campus.

Students returning to Duke after a leave of absence of any kind remain subject to the Board of Trustees policy requiring all Duke undergraduate students to live in university housing for three academic years (Six semesters) as a Duke student. Resident students who take a leave of absence for personal reasons may return as residents provided they follow the HRL procedures and deadlines. Duke guarantees housing to all of its full-time undergraduate students, save those who are not eligible due to disciplinary sanctions.

You may contact housing regarding your residency while your return application is under review. Students without a housing assignment will be required to apply and will be assigned once they have been approved for return. Students with a housing assignment, who are separated from the University, will have their housing cancelled and will be required to reapply once approved for return.

Students returning to Duke from a leave of absence (and who are subject to the residency requirement noted above) who fail to request housing will receive an assignment and be financially responsible for the term of the assignment.

Housing and Residence Life (HRL) works in conjunction with the Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) to ensure consistency in evaluating special housing accommodation requests. The Student Disability and Access Office reviews requests and shares approved student accommodations with HRL.

Information regarding the process to request an accommodation can be found on the Student Disability and Access Office  website

Students returning to Duke after a separation of any kind should work with the Time Away Office to manage their return process. You may contact housing assignments regarding your residency status while your Time Away Return Form is under review.

  • Students without a housing assignment will be required to apply and are assigned once approved for return.
  • Students with a housing assignment, who take time-off from the University, can decline housing and apply once approved for return.

Duke is committed to encouraging and sustaining a learning and work community that is free from prohibited discrimination and harassment. The institution prohibits discrimination on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status, in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, financial aid, employment, or any other institution program or activity. It admits qualified students to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students.

HRL affirms the sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and preferred names of its students and staff and strives to create environments where everyone can flourish.

If you have any questions about Gender Inclusive Housing, you can contact  MJ Williams , the Director of Housing Assignments and Planning in HRL, or  Angel Collie , Interim Director of the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity.

The deadline to be considered in the first round of reassignments is Tuesday, June 18, 2024; reassignments will be shared with upperclass students in early July.  You can access the reassignment application through the Housing Portal.

Application will be open july 2, 2024.

The first-year reassignment application will be available in early July; be sure to check our housing calendar  for the exact date. Before applying for a reassignment, we ask that you take the time to consider the pros and cons of the assignment you have received.

• Have you taken the time to get to know your roommate? • Is your concern about being in or wanting a single room?

If, after reviewing your pro-con list, you are still convinced that you want to be reassigned, you may submit a request for reassignment. Requests must be submitted no later than the published due date. We will review requests and make changes as space permits. Please note that it is rare for reassignments to occur at this time. Space is very limited. Results will be available at the end of July.

Early Arrivals

Last updated: 5/8/24, early arrival request form will open mid july 2024..

Housing and Residence Life works with approved student groups (students who are members of a pre-approved university-sponsored group or students participating in opening activities) and individual students requesting to return early for the fall semester.

Students returning prior to the official move-in dates, have to be authorized by an individual department or athletic program. If you are part of an approved group, you do not need to complete an individual early arrival request, but you will have to review and agree to the Early Arrival Terms and Conditions. This will be done through a separate process. Your group will provide HRL with a list of students, but you should confirm with your group that you are on the list they have provided us.

Individuals

Individual student early arrival is intended for continuing and incoming students who need to return or arrive prior to the official move-in dates, in order to attend due to personal, college-related business, tasks, and/or other exceptional circumstances. All individual students requesting to arrive prior to First Year move-in / Upperclass move-in, must complete the Individual Early Arrival Request Form via the Housing Portal.

Completion of the request form does not mean students are approved.

Once the student has completed and submitted the early arrival request, the form will be reviewed by the appropriate staff members. The student will be notified by email if the request is approved or not.
