Presentation, /prɛzənˈteɪʃɪn/, /prezənˈteɪʃən/.

Other forms: presentations

The noun presentation means the official giving, or presenting, of something. The presentation of diplomas at a graduation ceremony is the part that makes many of the parents in the audience cry.

A presentation can be a ceremony of giving some gift or award, and it can also be a demonstration or show — like a dog training presentation at your local pet store. Another meaning of presentation is a style of displaying something — like the presentation of plants and flowers in the florist's window or the presentation of food on a buffet table. In the 1600s, presentation was commonly used to mean "show or play," as in "a theatrical presentation ."

Synonym Chooser

How does the verb present contrast with its synonyms?

Some common synonyms of present are afford , bestow , confer , donate , and give . While all these words mean "to convey to another as a possession," present carries a note of formality and ceremony.

In what contexts can afford take the place of present ?

The words afford and present are synonyms, but do differ in nuance. Specifically, afford implies a giving or bestowing usually as a natural or legitimate consequence of the character of the giver.

When might bestow be a better fit than present ?

While in some cases nearly identical to present , bestow implies the conveying of something as a gift and may suggest condescension on the part of the giver.

When is it sensible to use confer instead of present ?

In some situations, the words confer and present are roughly equivalent. However, confer implies a gracious giving (as of a favor or honor).

Where would donate be a reasonable alternative to present ?

The synonyms donate and present are sometimes interchangeable, but donate is likely to imply a publicized giving (as to charity).

When could give be used to replace present ?

While the synonyms give and present are close in meaning, give , the general term, is applicable to any passing over of anything by any means.

Naturally, you would want to wish them luck when they are about to take on a challenge or embark on a new endeavor, such as interviewing for a promotion, showcasing their skills on stage, having a baby, moving cities, proposing to someone…it’s a long list.

Whether your friend has an interview, it’s your sister’s first day in school, or a colleague is giving a presentation to the board, it’s only natural to want to wish them well. While the phrase “good luck” is the most common way to wish people luck, English offers many other alternatives to make your well-wishes more enthusiastic. Using these good luck synonyms will surely bring a smile to the faces of those you’re cheering on.

In this article, we’ll explore other ways to say “good luck” in English using positive and inspiring words. Let’s get started!

Widening your vocabulary: Good luck synonyms

There is beauty in being able to express yourself. And the thing about widening your vocabulary is that it gives you a plethora of words to use to express yourself. Instead of saying “good luck” every time your loved ones are about to start an endeavor, you could use a good luck synonym, depending on the context and your relationship.

Of course, we don’t have control over luck, but our choice of words can give encouragement to our loved ones. Here are some other ways to say “good luck” in English or show someone encouragement:

Break a leg

I know you’re going to win today’s match. Break a leg!

Meaning: “Break a leg” is one of our favorite ways to wish someone good luck. When translated literally, this phrase might seem counterintuitive. But some believe that wishing someone good luck directly can be seen as bad luck, so saying the opposite is believed to bring positive outcomes.

Usage: “Break a leg” is often used in performing arts, particularly before a theater performance or a musical gig. It’s also suitable for situations where someone is about to take a test, give a presentation, or participate in a competitive event.

Knock ‘em dead

You prepared so hard for this competition. Knock ‘em dead!

Meaning: This phrase is the contracted form of “knock them dead,” an idiom that means to impress or amaze someone. It’s a fun and enthusiastic way to wish someone success, especially in sports and casual settings.

Usage: Use “knock ‘em dead” to encourage someone entering a situation where they have to showcase their skills, such as a talent show or a sports match.

You’ve got this

I heard you want to propose to Kathy tonight. You’ve got this!

Meaning: This short phrase is all about instilling confidence. It’s a way to remind someone that you believe in their abilities and success.

Usage: “You’ve got this” is perfect for various situations, from exams and presentations to personal challenges and significant life events. It’s also a great encouragement for a person who doesn’t believe in luck but puts trust in their abilities.

You are going to nail it , Dorothy!

Meaning: To “nail it” means to accomplish something with great success and skill. Using this phrase to wish someone luck implies that you have full confidence in their ability to excel.

Usage: Suitable for situations that require a high level of performance or execution, such as a job interview, a public speaking engagement, or a creative endeavor like an art project.

You can use the following phrases to show support to people you care about when “good luck” isn’t enough:

You’re amazing

You’re amazing! Show them you were born for this.

Meaning: This simple yet powerful affirmation conveys your well wishes and reminds the person of their capabilities.

Usage: “You’re amazing” is suitable for various situations, including exams and talent performances, to remind individuals of their unique talents and abilities.

Believe in yourself

You’re such an amazing singer; the judges will love you. Believe in yourself!

Meaning: “Believing in oneself” means having trust and confidence in one’s abilities and skills. Telling someone to believe in themself is a way of saying that you have faith in the person’s skills and want them to believe it, too.

Usage: It’s normal to get anxious or doubt your abilities before an important task. Use the “believe in yourself” affirmation to boost your friend’s self-confidence.

You’re destined for greatness

Don’t worry; you are going to get college admission. You’re destined for greatness.

Meaning: This phrase declares your belief in the person’s potential to achieve extraordinary things.

Usage: Use this phrase for moments when someone is about to take on a significant challenge or endeavor. It helps instill a sense of purpose and determination.

You’re a star

I know you can do it. You’re a star!

Meaning: A star shines, so when you compare a person to a star, you symbolize their brilliance and uniqueness. It’s a way to remind them of their star-like qualities.

Usage: Use this phrase to bolster someone’s self-esteem before they step into the spotlight, whether it’s a presentation, performance, or competition.

Repeating “good luck” every time can come off as overused or insincere. Here are some other ways to wish someone “good luck” in English:

May fortune favor you

May fortune favor you in your interview today.

Meaning: “Fortune” in English refers to prosperity attained partly through luck, especially by the power of some arbitrary force. “May fortune favor you” is a wish that the person finds success in their endeavors.

Usage: Suitable for various situations, mainly when the outcome relies partially on luck or chance. It expresses hope for favorable circumstances, making it the perfect “good luck” synonym for someone religious.

Wishing you all the best

I’m wishing you all the best in the games, girls!

Meaning: The word “best” describes something of excellence and high quality. This expression shows your desire for the person to experience the best possible outcome. “Wishing you all the best” can mean you are wishing a person good things to come of a specific event.

Usage: This phrase suits almost any situation, from academic pursuits to personal goals. We recommend you use it when closing a letter or email.

May the odds be in your favor

I heard your interview for promotion is scheduled for tomorrow. May the odds be in your favor.

Meaning: This expression draws from the idea of odds and probabilities. It’s a wish that the person’s efforts are rewarded with a favorable outcome.

Usage: This “best of luck” synonym is fitting for situations that involve competition, contests, or situations where the outcome is uncertain. It’s an optimistic way to wish success. Fans of The Hunger Games will love this reference!

May success follow you

I wish you all the best at your new workplace. May success follow you.

Meaning: “Success” in English means to realize one’s goal, especially in getting approval, becoming wealthy, or winning something. The phrase “may success follow you” emphasizes the notion of success as a companion, always present wherever the person goes.

Usage: This positive saying can be nice when wishing someone luck in a formal setting. You can also use it in texting someone you don’t talk to often.

When to use different expressions of good luck

The “best of luck” synonym you use should depend on whom you’re wishing luck to. For instance, some phrases suitable for casual settings might not have the same effect in a formal setting. Here is a list of when to use different “good luck” synonyms:

In casual conversations among friends and family, feel free to use more relaxed and playful expressions like “Break a leg!” and “You’ve got this!” These expressions add positivity and humor to your well-wishing, making them perfect for informal situations.

It’s best to avoid slang like “knock ‘em dead” in formal places like the workplace. For formal settings such as business meetings, interviews, or professional presentations, go for expressions that maintain a professional tone while conveying encouragement. Phrases like “wishing you success” and “may the odds be in your favor” strike the right balance between formality and positive intent.

When your peers or colleagues are about to tackle academic challenges or professional milestones, opt for expressions like “you’re destined for greatness” and “may success follow you.” These good luck expressions boost motivation and confidence in these more structured environments.

Sports is a field where “good luck” is often used. Using phrases that carry the energy needed to excel in a game, race, or match is perfect for the realm of sports and competition. Go for “Knock ’em dead!” and “Nail it!” to hype up your friends who are about to participate in a sports competition.

“Good luck” synonyms that serve as uplifting affirmations are perfect for friends engaged in creative endeavors like art, music, or writing. Words of affirmation like “you’re amazing” and “you’re a star” will encourage and recognize their unique talents.

Cross-cultural considerations

While “good luck” might be universally understood, its synonyms could be confusing or even offensive in certain cultures. Awareness of cross-cultural differences is crucial when using these expressions to ensure your well-wishes are received positively.

Different cultures have their unique ways of wishing good luck. For instance, in Chinese culture, the phrase “zhù nǐ hǎo yùn” translates to “wish you good luck.” In Germany, people wish good luck by “pressing their thumbs,” or showing two fists with the thumbs tucked in. In Korea, people say “Hwaiting!” to show support or wish someone luck before they start a challenge. The word is Konglish borrowed from the English word “fighting.”

Learning these expressions and gestures in different cultures can help you connect more deeply with people from various backgrounds. For example, telling a neighbor you bond with over Kdramas “Hwaiting!” will have a better effect than saying “Wishing you the best.”

While “break a leg” might be well understood in Western cultures, it could be puzzling elsewhere. Someone who doesn’t understand the phrase might wonder why you want them to break a leg on a stage. Opting for more universal expressions like “best of luck” can ensure the person doesn’t misunderstand your well wishes.

The world is diverse, and being culturally inclusive and sensitive is becoming increasingly important. If you are unsure about cultural differences, research is your best friend. If in doubt, consider using expressions emphasizing encouragement and positivity and avoid idioms like “knock ‘em dead” that might not resonate across cultures. This approach ensures inclusivity and genuine well-wishing.

Your loved ones need all the good luck wishes they can get for success in their exam, contest, competition, or any event. While saying “best of luck” can do the job most of the time, infusing some creativity in your wishes is a great idea. It adds a personalized touch to your wishes and can give them the energy and confidence to do well in their endeavors. Your choice of words might push someone to achieve bigger things!

So the next time you want to wish someone well on their journey, consider expressions like “break a leg” and “you’ve got this” to leave a lasting impact. It will help if you understand the appropriate contexts for each expression to tailor your well-wishes to fit various situations.
