Earning a Ph.D in Sports Management is a great way to stand out in this competitive field. Jobs for sport management professionals with their Ph.D exist in facility management, sports marketing, sports law, or education. Earning a sports management Ph.D is a natural progression for students who already have a career in athletics and business and are looking for professional advancement. Methodology

To identify the top 10 best sports management Ph.D programs, we started with a search on College Navigator to find out which schools offered these programs in an online format. We also consulted NASSM, the North American Society for Sport Management, which keeps a list of universities offering Ph.D Sport Management programs in the U.S. We compared student to faculty ratios, average graduate tuition rates, graduation rates, and accreditations using College Navigator. While graduation rates are provided only for first time undergraduate students, we felt this was still important to consider for our list an indicator of the level of support students receive while earning their degree. To be considered for our list, schools must hold regional accreditation, feature hands on training and internship or field experiences, and have a curriculum taught by doctorate level faculty. Where there are ties, we favored the school with the lower graduate tuition rate. From our list, we created a rating system as seen below to select our top 10 doctorate programs in sport management.

PhD Program

Program overview.

Students pursuing a PhD in Sport Management develop scholarly and research competence, culminating in an original doctoral dissertation contributing to the body of knowledge in sport business. The program is designed for students who intend to make their careers as scholars, teachers, researchers, and professionals in economics, marketing, philanthropy, and urban development, as they pertain to sport business.

Each doctoral student works closely with a faculty advisor from the beginning of their degree program. Under their faculty advisor’s guidance, they are expected to take relevant coursework, engage in relevant research experiences (lab rotations, independent study projects, etc.), generate research ideas, and complete a research dissertation prior to graduation. 

A principal goal of doctoral student training is achieving competence as an independent scholar. This entails not only proficiency in research but in the dissemination of knowledge. To achieve this, students learn to guide the learning of others as a Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) or Graduate Student Instructor (GSI). 

Doctoral students and their faculty advisors will form a Guidance Committee, Qualifying Examination Committee, and a Dissertation Committee to provide advice and evaluate student progress at successive stages of the program. 

Sport Management PhD Curriculum

PhD students choose from a set of core courses in Kinesiology, as well as cognate courses from other units, and complete a minimum of 30 pre-candidacy credits beyond the master's level. Qualifying examinations must be passed before advancing to candidacy, after which the student completes an original doctoral dissertation. A minimum of 50 credits including pre-candidacy and candidacy work must be completed to graduate.

The courses you take will vary, depending on your educational goals. Courses taken for graduate credit will carry SM or KINESLGY program codes, and are numbered 500 and above.

About the Program

Isenberg’s PhD in sport management is a full-time, residential program that prepares students for careers in academia. Students receive broad training in research methods and learn to apply advanced business understanding to sport subject matter. With small class sizes, students enjoy individualized instruction from faculty. Valuable teaching opportunities prime students to become educators at leading institutions.

Students generally complete a PhD in Sport Management within 4-5 years. Students must pass both a qualifying and comprehensive examination, and complete three years of teaching at Isenberg. During the final years students research, write, and defend a dissertation.

Students must take 48 credits of coursework, which includes classes in theory and research methods, research electives, and minor classes.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-84%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

Fees and funding

Tuition fees for 2023-24 entry, international fee, tuition fees for 2024-25 entry.

2023-24 tuition fees are applicable to projects starting in January 2024, April 2024, and July 2024. 2024-25 tuition fees are applicable to projects starting in October 2024, January 2025, April 2025 and July 2025.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.

The Centre for Sports Business offers world-leading research, consultancy and executive education courses in the business of sport.

Led by Professor Ian McHale and Professor Sue Bridgewater (Joint Directors).

Our staff bring expertise from a wide range of backgrounds, including expertise in sports analytics, marketing, economics, leadership, governance and finance, to make the Centre for Sports Business (CSB) a leading hub for sports business knowledge and practice. 

Our portfolio of activity includes leading-edge research and knowledge creation, executive education courses for clients including sporting organisations, governing bodies, leagues and clubs from around the world and consultancy for a range of leading sports organisations. With a strong basis in sports business practice underpinned by excellence in research, our staff are happy to discuss your knowledge and educational needs in the business of sport.

The School’s expertise and global reputation in the business of sport dates back to 1994 and the establishment of the Football Industries Group (FIG) which undertook research, consultancy and executive education for the football industry.   Since its inception, the networks of relationships, global alumni, senior level practitioners in football and sport have helped us to develop excellence in this sector with a number of members holding governance roles across many football organisations. 

The Centre now undertakes research into all aspects of sports business including shaping the Department of Culture, Media & Sport policy to reduce the maximum permitted stake on Fixed-Odds Betting Terminals from £100 to £2, and helping to define where the risk of match-fixing is most likely to occur, research which has been cited in sports arbitration cases going before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

We continue to work in partnership with many stakeholders throughout the football industry in particular, including Professor Ian McHale who designed and implemented the Sports Analytics Machine (SAM), a super computer that is used to answer the biggest questions in sport and that provides the BBC with predictions for matches in the Premier League.

The Centre is also incredibly fortunate to have two excellent football Executives In Residence; Dr Rick Parry and Neil Doncaster. Rick was the founding CEO of the Premier League and also CEO of Liverpool FC from 2000-2009. Neil is currently the Chief Executive of the Scottish Professional Football League, having previously done the same role for Scottish Premier League and Norwich City FC.

We have developed excellence in sports business executive education with a range of bespoke programmes for clients including the  League Managers Association , Godolphin and The Josoor Institute. Members of the Centre have strong relationships with practice, holding positions within a number of sporting organisations including with the Premier League, UEFA, The League Managers Association, The Football League, Women in Football, The Gambling Commission, the National Lottery Commission, and The Gambling Strategy Board.

Daniel Davila’s dream was to just get his “foot in the door” and work for a professional sports organization. But this Sport Management graduate has already been able to work for two national teams in the short time since he graduated in 2017. He currently works for the Dallas Stars hockey team and prior to that worked for the Texas Rangers baseball team. “It’s been an amazing journey so far,” he said. Master of Science in Psychology with a concentration in Sport Psychology is designed for students interested in the psychological aspects of sports and exercise. This program is ideal for students aiming to work with athletes to enhance performance, improve mental health, and promote overall well-being through psychological principles. Completed applications must be electronically submitted to ASU and include the following:

Letter of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation help support your graduate school application by providing a third-party view of your ability to perform well in graduate school. It is preferred that the letters of recommendation are from faculty members who know the applicant's work well; if these are not available, then recommendations should be from individuals in supervisory or professional roles. Two letters of recommendation are required. However, three letters of recommendation are strongly recommended.

Statement of Purpose

This is your opportunity to introduce yourself, share your goals and explain why you decided to pursue this particular program. Please provide a statement no longer than three pages double-spaced describing your research experience and interest overlap with the identified ASU program faculty.

Required Courses

Applicants must provide evidence of successful completion of an undergraduate, or graduate, social science statistics and research methods course. Typically, these pre-requisite courses should be in a social science field; however, applicants may apply with courses outside of a social science field.

GPA Requirement

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program, or applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in applicable master's degree program. 

GRE Scores (Optional)

Applicants to the Master of Science in psychology (sport psychology concentration) program are not required to submit a GRE score. Applicants who feel that their GPA and academic record are not reflective of their current ability are strongly recommended to provide a GRE score.

English Proficiency

International applicants should review details online to determine if a TOEFL or IELTS score must be submitted. Information can be found by visiting  students.asu.edu/graduate/proficiency .

Review Process

Review of applications for admission are done on a rolling basis. Typically decisions are returned within 14 calendar days from the date the application is ‘in review’. The decision timeframe may increase during peak cycles.

Bluegrass Orthopedics and Asbury University Announce Sports Medicine Agreement

Lexington/Wilmore, Ky. (May 28, 2024) – Bluegrass Orthopedics (BGO), a premier provider of comprehensive orthopedic services in Central Kentucky for more than 25 years, has formed a partnership with Asbury University (AU) to provide medical coverage for its 16 NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports teams and also expand learning opportunities for students pursuing career options.

Bluegrass Orthopedics will provide Asbury Athletics with full-time athletic trainers, orthopedic physician coverage, access to sub-specialists, and support to expand Asbury’s sports medicine program. BGO’s convenient locations throughout central Kentucky, along with its investments in technology and highly trained medical professionals, will allow for further investment across the AU campus community.

Asbury joins an expanding list of universities (2), high schools (6), athletic clubs, organizations, and multiple professional sporting events who utilize BGO’s sports medicine services.

In addition, BGO has committed to assisting in the academic growth of AU students pursuing careers in sports medicine and related medical fields. Bluegrass Orthopedics will create new experiential academic opportunities at its local clinics and offices, including but not limited to internships, job shadowing, and observation time.

“Our sports medicine outreach program has continued to grow, striving to provide top-notch healthcare coverage accessible directly on campus,” Cory Brown, BGO Director of Sports Medicine, shared. “We are excited by the opportunity to serve the student-athletes and community of Asbury University and welcome them into our family. The team approach to our sports medicine program is vital for its success — we utilize not only our athletic trainers, but also our sub-specialty trained physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists, and hand specialists.”

Graduate students in business displaced by College of Saint Rose closure continuing at Russell Sage

Russell Sage is absorbing a master’s degree program from the College of Saint Rose as the longtime Albany college shutters.

Making the move to Russell Sage as Saint Rose closes after more than a century is the Flex Master’s in Business Administration, the only program of its kind in the Capital Region. Central to the program is a hybrid teaching model, wherein students have three options for viewing classes: live in person, live online, or via recorded class sessions.

John Dion, a former Saint Rose marketing professor who is coming over to Russell Sage with the MBA program, says the variety of presentation methods is key for working adults. And Dion says if you choose one presentation method, you’re not stuck with one or the other.

“If you are going on a business trip, you can join the class, from your hotel room, if you want. It also works very well for people with young families, because sometimes you're not able to get to campus. Or sometimes you have some other commitment and you can't even join the class by Zoom. You don't have to worry about ever missing the class because you have that recorded lecture as a backup,” Dion said.

Pete Stapleton, Sage’s Assistant Provost for Strategic Initiatives, says the program fits with the college’s educational mission.

“We'd been looking a number of ways to continue to meet the student demand, we were adjusting some of our own class formats to better meet the student demand,” Stapleton said.

Dion says the program came about after hearing prospective students’ concerns over trying to balance school and professional lives.

“They knew they needed that advanced degree in order to advance their career. But they traveled for work or they had families, and this allowed them to have the safety net they needed to complete that degree,” Dion said.

Jen Gish is Sage’s Vice President for Marketing and Communications. She notes the connections have always been strong between the two Capital Region campuses.

“I think our response was, ‘what can we do to help in this situation? Support students, number one, support the employees, faculty of Saint Rose, with any opportunities we might have for them,’” Gish said.

Amanda Ettinger is Consumer Engagement Manager with Beech-Nut. She says, as a working professional in the MBA program, its flexibility is key with two young children and a husband who often travels for work.

“Being able to kind of pick and choose week to week how I would like to take the class, if I can be in person, I really try to be at school. But if I need to watch remotely or if I need to watch it back, because my husband can't be home that evening, it just really tied in well with where I'm at in my life right now,” Ettinger said.

Ettinger adds, having completed her undergraduate degree in 2012, the online format was slightly unnerving. Going back with a goal in mind, she wanted to have more interactions with her professors and classmates.

When WAMC first spoke with students in March, they mentioned feeling blindsided by the announcement of Saint Rose’s closure amid declining enrollment and financial pressure. Ettinger says she was just as surprised.

“I was actually at my friend's wedding; I was the maid of honor in her wedding. And I got a text from one of my friends at work who said, ‘did you that see Saint Rose is closing?’ I'm like, ‘I'm sorry, what?’ So I started looking it up. And I was getting some of the news articles about the announcement. And I was totally blindsided,” Ettinger said.

Ettinger says, since she’s taking the program one class per semester, she wasn’t as impacted by the closure as other students, but adds she’s grateful she’ll be able to continue on the same course as she would have at Saint Rose, with many of the same professors.

“Dr. Dion was my advisor. I know he's going there. I know he's already underway with bringing the FLEX program there. So I'm hoping that it's going to be a very seamless transition,” Ettinger said.

David Balk, a 24-year-old Buffalo native, is another Saint Rose student moving with the program to Russell Sage.

“The way it was set up was perfect for me. And yeah, having it closed. I was like, ‘I don't know what I'm gonna do now, I might, because I work full time, and go to school after work, I might have to quit my job if I want to finish my degree,’” Balk said.

Like Ettinger, Balk says he has mixed feelings about Saint Rose’s closure, adding there’s been distance since he’s taking the program online and didn’t study for his bachelor’s there, but says it still hurt to find out about the closure.

He says the transfer process was simple enough, adding the most stressful part was trying to find the right program to fit his needs and goals, and notes the move of some Saint Rose professors with the program aided his decision.

“I was really trying to figure out what the shortest path is going to be; how can I make this as similar as possible to my Saint Rose experience? And I think that what Russell Sage is offering is the perfect fit, where I'm not going to have to stay any longer,” Balk said.

He says he’s on track become a school district business leader when he graduates next May, with plans to work in the Buffalo metro area.

“I think that that is something that I'm going to have to be specifically focused on is, ‘hey, there's a lot more money coming in, more people are moving into these areas, we're going to be dealing with more taxes because more people will be living in the area.’ And I think that a lot of these school districts are going to be expanding,” Balk said.
