An Inspiring Speech for the Candle Lighting Ceremony at College of Nursing

First of all the light that shines is a reminder of the darkness outside. We live in a world where human rights are being violated. We live in a world where the elderly are being forgotten. We live in a world where children make friends through social media rather than face to face.

It is in this context that we need to understand our role in the nursing profession. We need to have a big picture of the suffering of people. It is not just physical illness that troubles people. More often it is the loneliness and the feeling of being deserted by friends and family that hurts people more.

So first of all we need to realize that there is darkness out there and we are called to shine our little lights in this darkness.

Secondly, the light that shines speaks about hope. We are called to do little acts of kindness which kindle hope in the heart of a patient. It can be a smile. It can be a kind word of encouragement. It can be a timely help. Or it can even be a pat on the shoulder or holding hands for a moment. Yes, God has chosen you to be angels of encouragement. Dag Hammarskjold the former UN Secretary General said, “Constant attention by a good nurse may be just as important as a major operation by a surgeon!”

So my dear graduates, today you are stepping into a new role. You are going to carry with you a ray of hope wherever you go even when life gets too busy and personal difficulties crowd out your day.

Finally, the light that shines is about burning out for others. There is without doubt a selflessness in the profession of nursing. We are called to put others first. “As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” In those words of the famous author Maya Angelou we have a guideline for your life’s work.

Today, we are lighting the lamp. In doing so, we also remember Florence Nightingale, The Lady with the Lamp, who gave nursing such a highly favourable reputation.

Let me sum up.

The light that shines talks about three things. One, it is a reminder of the darkness outside. Two, it speaks about hope. Thirdly and finally, the light that shines is about burning out for others.

My dear graduates I take this opportunity to wish you the very best in your academics and in your nursing career. Let the beginning that you make today always inspire you to cherish and uphold the values and traditions of the nursing profession.

Remember what Jesus Christ said,

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

As far as you are concerned the light that shines is not about the pay cheque you take home; it is more about the countless number of lives of individuals and families you touch every day. It is about hope and cheer, of comfort and strength; a restoring of health and wholeness. May God give you wisdom and strength and the resolve to be such angels of encouragement. May people find heaven very near in you!

Lamp Lighting Ceremony

Most school and college functions start with a lamp lighting ceremony. If so is the case with your institution, this is how you can invite the principal and chief guests on the stage to light the lamps:

“As we work to create light for others, we naturally light our own way.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

“Now, I would like to call on the stage our respected principal Mr/ Ms [name] as well as our chief guest Mr/ Ms [name] for the lamp lighting ceremony. Please give them a huge round of applause. Thank you.”

Honouring the Chief Guest 

Once the lamps are lit, the next step is to honour the chief guest. 

“Now I would like to request our Principal sir/ ma’am to honour our chief guest with the bouquet and memento. We thank you for gracing us with your presence.”

“- Thank you, sir/ ma’am. I would now request you all to please take your seats. Thank you. Let’s give them a huge round of applause.”

Speech by the Principal 

“I would now request our respected principal sir/ ma’am to please come up on the stage and say a few words. Thank you.” 

After the speech:

“Thank you, Sir/ Ma’am. Your words always inspire and motivate us. Thank you. Everyone, please give him/ her a huge round of applause. Thank you.”

Award Distribution

There are several categories in which students can be awarded. There can be awards for excelling in academics, for coming first/second/third in sports or for dance/drawing competitions. 

“The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” – Diogenes 

“Now, it is time for us to start the award distribution ceremony. May I first request our respected principal sir/ma’am and honourable chief guest to please take the seats on the stage. Thank you.” 

“Now, I am going to announce the first, second and third rank holders of every class. As I announce your name, I request you to come upon the stage and receive your award from our respected principal sir/ma’am and honourable chief guest. Thank you. – “

“From nursery, we have first rank holder, [name], second rank holder, [name], and third rank holder, [name]. I request their class teacher, Mrs [name], to kindly escort them. Thank you.”…

…”From class 4, we have first rank holder, [name], second rank holder, [name], and third rank holder, [name]. Please come up on the stage and receive your award from the principal sir/ma’am. Thank you.”…

…”Last but not least, from our senior-most class, class 12, we have first rank holder, [name], second rank holder, [name], and third rank holder, [name]. You all have worked hard. “We recently held a quiz competition for our students and it was really impressive seeing that all the participants were so well prepared. Although everyone did well, as is the rule of the game, we must pick one as the winner. Now, I will be announcing the names of the winners. I would like to request them to come up on the stage and receive their awards. Thank you.”

“From Group A (classes 2 and 3), the winner is [name].  From Group B (classes 4 and 5), the winner is [name]. …

…From Group E (classes 11 and 12), the winner is [name].” “Thank you and congratulations to all the winners.”

Drawing/Dance Competition 

“Dancing is the poetry of the foot.” – John Dryden 

“A month ago, on the birth anniversary of Pandit Birju Maharaj, we held a dance competition for the students of our institute. It was judged by Dance Guru [name]. We have the names of the winners with us. As I announce the names, may I request the winners to come upon the stage and receive their awards. Thank you.”

“For classical dance (class 5 to 8), the winners are the kathak duo [names]. 

For classical dance (class 9 to 12), the winner is [name].  For fusion dance (class 5 to 8), the winning group is [name]. …

…For ballet dance (class 10 to 12), the winner is [name].” “Thank you and congratulations to all the winners.”

Cultural Program

“If Music is a Place – then Jazz is the City, Folk is the Wilderness, Rock is the Road, Classical is a Temple.” – Vera Nazarian 

“How can such an amazing event as this come to an end without some good music. May I now call on to the stage our talented, award-winning sitar duo [names]. They will perform Raag [raaga name] on their sitars. Please welcome them with a huge round of applause. Thank you.”

After the performance:

“What a soulful performance. Thank you so much. This performance made today’s event even more wonderful. Everyone, please give these talented kids a huge round of applause. Thank you.” 

End of the Event 

“With that, we have now come to the conclusion of the event. I hope everyone enjoyed the event and had a lot of fun. A huge congratulations to all the winners. Keep working hard. And to all the students, never give up! You all are winners in your own right! Thank you.

Sometimes people opt to have candlelight ceremonies in lieu of funerals or memorial services. This might happen if the deceased was clear that they preferred people to remember them happily and not mire themselves in grief. This uplifting poem urges people to think of their lost loved ones with enough joy to temper the sadness.  

2. "Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep” by Mary Frye 

This is perhaps one of the most well-known and beloved funeral poems of all time. Like the poem above, it has a message of goodwill and hope. The deceased is reminding their loved ones that she lives on in spirit. She can be found nearby as long as her loved ones remember her. 

Most candlelight ceremonies are not held at graveside, so the message of this poem is right on point.  

3. "Turn Again to Life” by Mary Lee Hall 

This is another poem told from the perspective of someone who has passed away. It acknowledges the pain that people feel when a loved one dies. But in lines like “For my sake turn again to life and smile,” it also gently urges people to also look for happiness. 

4. "As We Look Back” by Anonymous 

Candlelight vigils are often held to honor people who made a big impact on their community. This could include political leaders, philanthropists, or teachers. With this poem, people can show their gratitude for someone who had a positive impact on so many lives. 

5. "Holy Sonnet X” by John Donne

This poem celebrates the birthday of someone who is no longer here to celebrate with us. It’s the perfect way of honoring a deceased loved one on their birthday . 

We’ve talked about solemn poems to celebrate someone’s life after they have passed away. But you don’t have to wait until someone has passed away to honor them. Birthdays already feature a version of a candlelight ceremony. Lighting candles on a birthday cake and singing a song is akin to a candlelight ceremony. 

Quinceañeras may also feature a candle-lighting ceremony. Several sororities hold candlelight ceremonies when a member gets engaged. There are many occasions that can be enhanced by an uplifting candlelight ceremony.

Anchor -1: Respected principal, honorable chief guest, respected teachers, non-teaching staff, and my dear friends, good afternoon, I am Sam and I would like to welcome you all with my co-anchor Rita for this grand farewell ceremony which is full of mingled feelings of happiness and sadness. We are happy as our 10 th, and 12 th  college students are going to take a very important exam of their lives and the feeling that they will not be here with us in the next academic year makes us feel sad but I believe it is not the end but the beginning of a very beautiful journey. We wish you all the best and let us start this program with lamp lighting.

Anchor-2: good afternoon to you all and I would like to welcome you all to this send-off party with my co-anchor Sam. I would like to invite our chief guest and principal for the lamp lighting to officially start this function.

“IGNITE THE LAMP TOWARDS THE WAY TO SERVE”

The lamp lighting ceremony, held as a tribute to Florence Nightingale – “The Lady with the Lamp”, which is an auspicious occasion in every nurse’s life. The lamp lighting ceremony and the oath taking ceremony formally declares the student’s desire and entry into the nursing profession.

“A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is caring, sharing person inside.”

 The lamp lighting and oath taking ceremony for the 1 st batch of B. Sc. Nursing students of St. Francis College of Nursing was held on July 23 rd 2019. “His Grace”, Rev. Bishop Fr. Chacko Thottumarickal, was the Chief Guest of the occasion along with the Guest of Honour, Prof. Dr. Usha Ukande, President Nursing Honour Society, President SOMI, Indore Chapter and other esteemed invitees from the college and hospital.

The programme began with the welcome speech delivered Sr. Cynthia, Nursing Superintendent, St. Francis Hospital and Research Centre. Principal, Professor Dr. Blessy Antony, presented the annual report of the College of Nursing. Rev. Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal, announced the awards for students excelling in academic performance in their first term examination.

The Chief Guest in his address, spoke about the importance of Nurses, in the life of every human being. A profession like nursing, means the selfless service of caring, loving and sharing.

The lamps were lit and the novice nurses received the light from the Principal. It was followed by ‘Oath taking Ceremony’ which was led by Asst. Prof. Mrs. Neha Babru. After the lamp lightning ceremony, Rev. Fr. Lucas, Director of St. Francis College of Nursing addressed the audience.

The master of the ceremony was Ms. Jenifer Das and the programme was concluded with a vote of thanks, delivered by Sr. Saly K. M. (Archana).

NYC pauses to remember 9/11 victims 23 years after terror attacks that altered the nation

NEW YORK -- Wednesday marked 23 years since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks that forever changed New York City and the nation. 

Nearly 3,000 people were killed when al Qaeda hijackers crashed four jetliners into the twin towers, the Pentagon and a field in southwest Pennsylvania. 

On this day each year, families who lost loved ones in the worst terror attack on American soil make the solemn trek to observe the six moments of silence, hear the reading of the names, and fulfill a sacred promise to never forget . 

As years pass, more and more names are being read by children and young adults born after the attacks -- as an older generation passes on the grave responsibility of remembering this day to a new generation. 

"Twenty-three years is like 23 seconds. On Sept. 11, my brother disappeared, but this place has become my altar," one man said at the podium. "This ceremony is essential, because that day he disappeared, but if I come here and I speak his name out loud, and you hear his name, he will never, never disappear."

"I have sunflowers every year, not just because they remind me of my uncle Richie, but because in a time of such profound darkness, they always look for the light," one woman said.

9/11 moments of silence

Wednesday's ceremony honored the 2,983 victims killed in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, aboard Flight 93, and in the 1993 WTC bombing. 

The  9/11 Memorial & Museum  opened to family members at 8 a.m. before the commemoration began at 8:46 a.m.

A citywide moment of silence was held at 8:46 a.m. to mark the moment hijacked Flight 11 struck the North Tower. A second moment of silence was held at 9:03 a.m. to mark when hijacked Flight 175 struck the South Tower.

Another moment of silence followed at 9:37 a.m. , marking when hijacked Flight 77 struck the Pentagon.

A moment of silence was held at 9:59 a.m. to mark when the South Tower fell, then at 10:03 a.m. to mark when hijacked Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and then at 10:28 a.m. to mark when the North Tower fell.

The ceremony wrapped up at around 12:45 p.m.

U.S. leaders vow to "never forget"

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were on hand for the ceremony in Lower Manhattan, along with former President Donald Trump and Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance.

New York leaders, including Sen. Chuck Schumer, Gov. Kathy Hochul and former mayors Bill de Blasio, Michael Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani were also seen in the crowd, as well as New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.

Mr. Biden and Harris both released statements beforehand, repeating the calls to "never forget."

"Never forget each of the 2,977 precious lives stolen from us when terrorists attacked our nation," Mr. Biden wrote. "Never forget their families who still bear the grief from that searing September morning. Never forget the heroic citizens and survivors who rushed to help their fellow Americans. And never forget that when faced with evil -- and an enemy that sought to tear us apart -- we endured."

"Today is a day of solemn remembrance as we mourn the souls we lost in a heinous terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. We stand in solidarity with their families and loved ones. We also honor the extraordinary heroism on display that fateful day by ordinary Americans helping their fellow Americans. We will never forget," Harris said in her statement.

The White House said the president and vice president were  also to visit the 9/11 sites in Shanksville, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.

While remembering the lost, some said it was also a chance to address elected leaders to call for justice following the now-revoked plea deal military prosecutors had reached with the alleged 9/11 mastermind and two other defendants .

"It is outrageous that our government would ever entertain the thought of granting the terrorist a plea deal," one person said.

Remembering 9/11 around Tri-State Area

Other remembrances were held across New York and New Jersey to mark the somber morning.

At sunset, bagpipers and drums led a parade outside the FDNY Ten House with first responders and military marching in formation to honor the fallen.  

On Long Island, a ceremony at Point Lookout honored the nearly 500 residents killed on Sept. 11 and the first responders who later died of cancer from the days of recovery and months of cleanup. Leaders noted the crowd for the event never dwindles. 

"We've been having this ceremony on this beach, and it gets bigger and bigger every single year. People love to come down here to reflect, to be together and to remember," Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald Clavin said. 

"I lost my husband, Ronny, on 9/11. It's tough," said resident Carol Gies. "He was a member of Squad 288 in Maspeth, Queens. His firehouse lost the most men in the entire department."

The Kirchner family of Oceanside supported husband and father Richard through decades of health battles. He spent 600 hours on the pile.

"My husband passed away in 2022 from dementia and lung ailments," widow Dawn Kirchner said.

"I am in awe of him for the rest of my life and proud to be his daughter," Ava Kirchner said.

In Jersey City, a ceremony at the 9/11 memorial along the Hudson River also paid tribute to the 39 residents killed in the attacks. The city's waterfront became a triage center for those fleeing Manhattan by ferries that day, including now-Mayor Steven Fulop, who later joined the Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq. 

"The crowd that comes out is smaller every single year and it gets farther and farther from people's mind... Younger people don't have that same close proximity to it, because a lot of the younger people, even some working for the city, weren't alive," Fulop said Wednesday, adding, "it's something that we're going to try to raise up."

In total, more than 700 people from New Jersey were killed on Sept. 11. Dozens of loved ones came to honor the dead Wednesday, many throwing flowers into the river, as the names were read aloud.

"Unreal, just an unreal experience then, and 23 years later, it still feels unreal," said Barbara Smith, whose best friend was killed in the North Tower. "I was working on Water Street and when the first plane hit, none of us really understood what was happening. One woman who had been around for the '93 attack knew right away that it was a terror attack, but most of us really didn't believe that until the second plane."

"It's a painful day, but it's so important to remember all the people who sacrificed their lives for the great country that we live in," said Douglas Mahler of Franklin Lakes.

"I was first hand who was there and I know a lot of people who survived and not survive," Jan Demczur said.

Demczur was a window washer trapped in a North Tower elevator when the first hijacked plane hit the World Trade Center. He said he and several others got out by chipping away at a wall.

"I put my foot inside the hole, start kicking that and there's another wall," Demczur said, "and I see the light."

He said he then took another elevator and ran down 44 flights of stairs.

"Very difficult because so many young people lost lives," Demczur said.

Street closures for 9/11 ceremony

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is located at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. 

Drivers should plan for the following street closures around the area:

• Areas bounded by Barclay Street on the North; Rector Street on the South; Broadway on the East; West Street on the West (All Inclusive)
• Liberty Street between West Street and South End Avenue
• Albany Street between West Street and South End Avenue
• West Thames Street between West Street and South End Avenue
• South End Avenue between Liberty Street and West Thames Street
• Battery Place between West Thames Street and 3rd Place
• 3rd Place between Battery Place and Little West Street
• Little West Street between 3rd Place and Battery Place

This comes the same time as the United Nations General Assembly, which is also causing street closures and delays on Manhattan's East Side.

Lamp Lighting Ceremony

The Lamp lighting ceremony held as a tribute to Florence Nightingale is an auspicious occasion in every nurses life. The budding nurses, adorned in their uniforms for the first time, formally marks the students entry into the nursing profession.

The ‘Lamp Lighting and Oath Taking Ceremony’ of the 26th batch of GNM and 24th batch of B. Sc Nursing students of Laxmi Memorial Institute and College of Nursing was held on 23rd February , at AJIMS Auditorium, Kuntikana Mangalore.

The programme commenced with a prayer dance performed by 3rd year B.Sc nursing students. Dr Elsa Sanatombi Devi Professor and QMR, Manipal College of Nursing was the Chief Guest of the ceremony. Mr Harish, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Health Nursing welcomed the gathering. The august dignitaries on the dais lighted the lamp and inaugurated the ceremony.

Mrs Shalini Fernandes, Assistant professor, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, highlighted the significance of the day.

As a sign of honour and respect to the Pioneer of nursing profession, the dignitaries garlanded the portrait of Florence Nightingale, The lady with the lamp. The dignitaries along with the faculty lit the lamps of 176 novice nursing students which symbolizes wisdom, knowledge and compassion, followed by recitation of oath, pledging themselves to uphold the duties as a professional Nurse, administered by Mrs Sandhya D Almeida, HOD, Associate Professor, Department of OBG Nursing. A melodious and soothing song “Love shine a light” added solemnity for the program.

The chief guest, Prof Dr Elsa Sanatombi Devi, in her address to the gathering applauded the students for choosing the nursing profession. She gave a call to the students to be committed, have a right attitude and be disciplined as a student. She said that these budding nurses are a great asset to the needy patients.

The Principal Dr. Larissa Martha Sams congratulated the new budding nurses and motivated them to imbibe the sanctity of the profession. She emphasized the budding nurses to develop knowledge, skill and attitude and wished them good luck as they enter the nursing profession

Dr. Jenifer Dsouza, HOD, Department of Community health nursing, proposed the vote of thanks. The Programme was compered by Mrs Nikku A Thomas and Sneha Roy, Faculty of Laxmi Memorial college of nursing.

Event Highlights
