Room Selection A Department of Resident Life Training Session

Introduction.

So..you’re thinking about living on campus again? First of all, it would be a great choice. But I don’t have to convince you, just ask all of the leaders, scholars, and others just like you returning to our halls. Anyway, you’re here because you want to learn about your housing options and how to pick your place to live. And if you’re worried all of this will be complicated and confusing, don’t worry, we’ll give you the basics of what you’ll need to know. While you’re here, you can even learn about the mixed gender and gender inclusive housing options. Let’s get started.

Phase 1: Pre-March Deadline

You’ll have a little homework to do prior to Room Selection.

Go through the Room Selection Website. This site has all of the details about room selection. We know there’s a lot of information there, so we’ll give you the important highlights in this training.

There are two basic questions you’ll want to ask yourself: Where do I want to live? Who do I want to live with?

  • What do I know about the building? Have I ever been there? Do I know anybody who does live there and do I know what rooms in these buildings are preferable?
  • Where is it in relation to important buildings: my classes? The Dining Hall? Parking? The Shuttle-UM stop?
  • What would be my second, third or fourth choice? Have I been there
  • What type of room do I want (single, double, triple, quad, semi-suite, suite, apartment)?
  • Which side of the building do I want to be on (facing the street, or facing the quad)?
  • Where on the floor and in the building do I want to be (lower floor, higher floor, near elevator or near stairs, next to the bathroom or far away from it, do I want two windows)?
  • Do I know how much the different housing types cost? What is the cost of where I’d like to live?

The "Where": Our Communities

Our campus has 2 distinct areas: North Campus and South Campus. North Campus is comprised of Denton, Cambridge, and Ellicott Communities. South Campus is comprised of North Hill, South Hill and Leonardtown Communities. (label naming each community appears as voiceover lists them).

The South Hill Community offers suite and apartment-style housing with different room configurations. Special note should be made of Cecil Hall, which is an all-female traditional residence hall.

Although it’s across Route 1, the Leonardtown Community is part of South Campus. This community offers apartment-style living.

The North Hill Community is home to several living-learning programs, but there are rooms available to everyone. It offers co-ed, traditional, low-rise housing with rooms ranging from singles, doubles, triples and quadruples. Prince Frederick Hall also offers 2-bedroom semi-suites.

The Denton Community offers co-ed, traditional, multi-story housing with rooms ranging from singles, doubles, triples and quadruples. Oakland Hall also offers 2-bedroom semi-suites.

The Ellicott Community is home to programs in the Honors College. It offers co-ed, traditional, multi-story housing with rooms ranging from singles, doubles, triples and quadruples.

The Cambridge Community is home to College Park Scholars. It offers co-ed, traditional, multi-story housing with rooms ranging from singles, doubles, triples and quadruples.

  • Who do I want to live with? Just because the person is a good friend, does that mean they’ll be a good roommate?
  • How many roommates do I want to live with?
  • If someone I want to live with isn’t available or eligible, or if they cancel this summer, is there anyone else?
  • Am I, or someone I want to live with, interested in Mixed Gender or Gender Inclusive Housing?

Everything we’ve covered so far is a lot to think about, but this next step is one of the MOST important: You will need to submit your Returning Student Agreement by March 30 at 4:00 pm. Don't be late; this is your best chance to receive priority for campus housing for next year.

On your Returning Student Agreement, you will be able to indicate your interest in Mixed Gender or Gender Inclusive Housing. You will also make your first decision about whether to return to your current assignment or to shop around campus to select a new location.

Remember how we mentioned Mixed Gender and Gender Inclusive Housing earlier? If you decide on this option, you’re required to take the Mixed Gender and Gender Inclusive Housing Training right after this one.

One more thing, be sure you are in good financial standing with the campus. In other words, PAY YOUR BILLS . Any student with a Financial Block on their registration when it’s time to submit a Returning Student Agreement will not be eligible to participate in Room Selection and, if they submit a Housing Agreement, will be placed on the campus housing waitlist.

Once you submit your Returning Student Agreement, all you have to do is wait for your priority number.

Phase 2 Post-Deadline

Once you get your priority number, you will probably wonder what it even means. Think of your priority number as your place in line. When it’s your turn, we’ll match you up with your best available housing preference.

Depending on what you choose on your Returning Student Agreement, your next steps will vary.

  • Stay in your exact same space
  • Pull-in an eligible friend to live with you

But keep in mind your actual choice will be confirmed through personalized instructions from the Assignments Office.

  • If you choose to stay in your exact same location, congratulations! You’re pretty much done with the process.
  • If you elect to return to your current bedroom for next year, and a vacancy exists in that room at the start of Room Selection, you may name a "pull-in" of another eligible on-campus resident. Basically, if there’s an open space you can “pull-in” someone to live with you.
  • If you elect to return to your current semi-suite, suite, or apartment, and a vacancy exists in any of the bedrooms at the start of Room Selection, you may name a "pull-in" of another eligible on-campus resident.
  • Please be sure to read the details about Pull-ins on the Room Selection website.
  • Remember when you had to think about who you would like to live with and where? Now it’s time to put that to use.
  • Please be flexible and list many preferences. This way, our system can find the best match for you. Refer to the homework you did when exploring the different communities and housing options.
  • Please be sure to talk to your group before the Preference Based Shopping period and throughout. It is extremely important everyone communicates with each other when you or your group mates’ plans change.
  • You can be in more than one group! While you’re limited to one group of each size, you can actually be in a group of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, and list preferences for each size group.
  • Please be flexible and list many preferences for each group you are a part of. This way, our system can find your best match. Refer to the homework you did when exploring the different communities and housing options.

Wait for your assignment. Our system will work behind the scenes to best accommodate everyone’s preferences. Now, if you’re not happy with your new assignment, there’s something called Room Exchange. We won’t get into it here, but you can visit the Resident Life website later for more information.

Unless you’re interested in the Mixed Gender and Gender Inclusive housing options, you’re finished with our Room Selection training and you can scroll down to see a list of resource links for all the information we covered here. If you’re interested in learning more about Mixed Gender and Gender Inclusive housing options, please continue on with the training.

The Department of Resident Life, based in Annapolis Hall, announced in an email today that most students living on campus this fall will be in singles, but pay the double-room rate, based on housing style.

The Department of Resident Life sent the following email today to students planning to live on campus:

We are glad you have decided to live on-campus for the fall semester. We look forward to welcoming you or welcoming you back soon. We are writing with important and updated information about residence hall room assignments for fall. In consultation with our campus and local public health experts and upon review of our updated occupancy projections, we will assign most students to single-room occupancy for the fall semester. This action is in line with our goal to prioritize the health and well-being of our students and to support physical distancing guidelines. As such, all traditional-style residence halls will be single occupancy.

Room Assignments for Incoming Residents All incoming residents will be assigned to their own room for the fall semester. We recognize that many new Terps submitted roommate requests—please know that this move to single occupancy in our traditional halls will allow us to further de-densify our residence halls and provide more opportunity for physical distancing, while also accommodating those students who want and need to live in our residence halls this fall. Our team will do our best to assign students who submitted roommate requests to rooms near each other.

Room Assignments for Returning Residents Returning students assigned to traditional-style residence halls will be assigned to their own room. Returning residents who selected a suite or apartment during room selection may request to remain together in the suite/apartment like a “family unit,” provided that all residents of the unit agree. If current vacancies exist within a suite/apartment, residents will be reassigned within the unit into private bedrooms, where possible, to support physical distancing. Due to the need to finalize and communicate room assignments to all residents before move-in, we are unable to accept pull-in requests for suites and apartments. Details regarding the suite/apartment request process for returning students will be released late next week.

Semi-Suites in Prince Frederick and Oakland Halls For students assigned to semi-suites, we will assign one student per bedroom within each semi-suite.

Room Assignment Notifications Our assignments team is assessing and reviewing our returning student room assignments and available vacancies so we can make the appropriate modifications to fall room assignments.  Our goal is still to provide notification of assignments for incoming students in early August, but later than Aug. 3 as we adjust our room assignments. We will provide a revised date for assignments notification as soon as possible.

Housing Fees As we finalize our fees for the fall semester, we are committed to keeping our rates affordable for our residents. Our move to single occupancy will result in fall semester rate adjustments where students will be provided a single room at the double-room rate, based on housing style.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges for our campus community. Through it all, our students’ health and safety remain paramount in our decision-making.   Please know that our staff is here to help you transition to campus and to support you while you live in the residence halls.

Our goal is to keep you informed, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we respond to evolving circumstances. Please continue to monitor your email and our website .

We will provide you with more information late next week. Again, we cannot wait to see you soon!

Court rejects parents’ attempt to opt kids out of LGBTQ-inclusive reading assignments

A federal appeals court rejected a bid from a group of Maryland parents to require Montgomery County Public Schools to allow them to opt their children out of lessons that involve LGBTQ-inclusive material.

A divided three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a  lower court decision  denying a preliminary injunction on the basis that the parents had not yet demonstrated how the county’s board of education book policy would infringe on their right to free expression of religion.

Three sets of parents – who are Muslim, Jewish and Christian – along with a parental rights organization, sued the Maryland school district after it said it would no longer allow parents to opt their children out of lessons that used a slate of newly approved LGBTQ-inclusive books.

The parents argued that the books “contradict their sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage, human sexuality, and gender” and that the lack of an opt-out policy violates their children’s First Amendment right to free exercise of religion.

U.S. Circuit Judge G. Steven Agee, writing for the majority in the opinion, said there was not enough evidence on the record to assess how the books were being used in the classroom and, therefore, to assess the likelihood of the case succeeding.

“We take no view on whether the Parents will be able to present evidence sufficient to support any of their various theories once they have the opportunity to develop a record as to the circumstances surrounding the Board’s decision and how the challenged texts are actually being used in schools,” Agee, appointed by former President George W. Bush, wrote.

“At this early stage, however, given the Parents’ broad claims, the very high burden required to obtain a preliminary injunction, and the scant record before us, we are constrained to affirm the district court’s order denying a preliminary injunction,” he continued, in the opinion, which was joined by U.S. Circuit Judge DeAndrea Benjamin, an appointee of President Biden’s.

U.S. Circuit Judge A. Marvin Quattlebaum, Jr., an appointee of former President Trump’s, dissented, arguing the board violated parents’ right to influence their children’s religious upbringing.

Eric Baxter – vice president and senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which is representing the parents – pledged to appeal the ruling on Wednesday, in an emailed statement to The Hill.

“The court just told thousands of Maryland parents they have no say in what their children are taught in public schools,” Baxter said in his statement. “That runs contrary to the First Amendment, Maryland law, the School Board’s own policies, and basic human decency.”

“Parents should have the right to receive notice and opt their children out of classroom material that violates their faith. We will appeal this ruling,” he added.

In August 2023, U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman found that the parents were unlikely to succeed on the merits and denied their request to keep the policy in place while the case proceeds. She found that they failed to show that the lack of an opt-out policy would result in the “indoctrination of their children” or “coerce their children to violate or change their religious beliefs.”

“The parents still may instruct their children on their religious beliefs regarding sexuality, marriage, and gender, and each family may place contrary views in its religious context,” Boardman wrote in the order last year.

“No government action prevents the parents from freely discussing the topics raised in the storybooks with their children or teaching their children as they wish,” she added.

Maryland State Police Aviation Command Rescues Injured Hiker In St. Mary’s County

(LEONARDTOWN, MD) – The Maryland State Police Aviation Command on Monday rescued an injured hiker at St. Mary’s River State Park.

At approximately noon on Monday the Maryland State Police Aviation Command was requested to assist St. Mary’s County fire personnel with the extrication of an injured hiker, who was located three miles into St. Mary’s River State Park in Leonardtown, Maryland.

Trooper-7, based out of St. Mary’s Regional Airport, responded to the scene and maneuvered the AW-139 helicopter into a 120-foot hover. Once in place, a state trooper/flight paramedic was deployed from the helicopter to assess and prepare the patient to be hoisted into the helicopter.

Under direction and coordination between the flight paramedic and ground personnel, the hiker was placed into a patient extrication platform and successfully hoisted into the helicopter. Once the patient was brought into the helicopter, the flight crew transitioned into a medevac role and transported the hiker to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center in Largo, Maryland, for treatment of their injuries.

The Maryland State Police Aviation Command has served the Maryland since 1970 and operates a fleet of 10 AW-139 helicopters from seven bases throughout the state. Each aircraft provides round-the-clock coverage to Maryland residents and visitors. The agency’s missions include medevac, law enforcement, search and rescue, homeland security and disaster assessment. The success of the missions relies heavily on the cooperative efforts of local fire, rescue, EMS, law enforcement agencies and our partners at the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Park Police.

  • You’ll need to give details about what happened. For example, the hospital name, patient name (if you choose to), and what happened, including the date. You can file a complaint anonymously.
  • File your complaint as soon as possible. This will make it easier to keep track of the facts, and it may help if you choose to take legal action on your own.

To file a complaint

There are 2 ways to file a complaint about a possible EMTALA violation:

  • Contact the State Survey Agency in the state where the hospital is located.
  • Use the online form linked here. The federal government will review your complaint and might share it with the state.

File an EMTALA complaint

If you already filed a complaint and have more information or want to contact us, please file another complaint.

What to expect

If you use the online form and provide your email, you'll get an email confirming that the federal government got your complaint.

The federal government and the states work together to review and investigate EMTALA complaints. Often a State Survey Agency conducts the investigation, if there is one. After an investigation, the federal government reviews the case and determines if a hospital violated EMTALA. The process can take weeks or months, depending on the nature of the complaint.

Whether you file a complaint anonymously or provide your contact information, note that investigators might reach out to patients and other people they identify in hospital records.

If you provide your contact information, you’ll get a summary of the investigation.

If your complaint is about a situation EMTALA doesn’t cover, it will be sent to the right office, or closed.

Charger News: NaVorro Bowman Details How He Was Able to Join Jim Harbaugh's Staff

The Los Angeles Chargers rehauled their coaching staff when Jim Harbaugh arrived in town. Many of the additions that Harbaugh made were understood. Adding his defensive right-hand man from Michigan, Jesse Minter, made total sense. Also, bringing back former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman was necessary for rebuilding the run attack for the team.

Most additions were of coaches who have had a ton of experience at the collegiate and professional levels. However, one coach that was added did not have that same experience: NoVorro Bowman.

Bowman is a former All-Pro linebacker who has plenty of experience with Harbaugh, as he was coached by the man during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. Still, even with a familiarity with Harbaugh, that does not equate to being offered a high position on the Chargers coaching staff.

Bowman details how this came about, as he spoke to Omar Navarro of Chargers.com .

"I think I really just wanted to be around my kids and give them some time, take some weight off my wife and things like that," Bowman said. "I enjoyed it. As I was watching football, I literally wanted to give information to people that were doing things wrong.

"I called [Maryland Head Coach] [Mike] Locksley and he invited me up there with no hesitation," Bowman added. "I'm blessed to have had that opportunity."

Bowman figured out that his mindset on the game of football was leading to calling out errors in the team's fundamentals. He was then given a chance to be a defensive analyst for the University of Maryland Terrapins football program.

It didn't take long for Bowman to then hop from the collegiate level to the pros, as he met with Harbaugh and asked for a chance to join his staff.

"We had some showings in San Fran where Jim showed up," Bowman said. "I would throw it across his ear and see what he says. He was like, 'Yeah.' No hesitation.

"I got myself prepared and started in that year-and-a-half at Maryland, just started really understanding the coaching side and being prepared for when the opportunity presented itself," Bowman added. "I'm just blessed, man. Blessed to be here. Blessed for him to believe in me to do this job. I'm attacking it like I should."

Bowman was immediately vetted and added to the coaching staff under Harbaugh and is now coaching the position that he was so dominant at. Bowman should do wonders for Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, Denzel Perryman, and newly acquired Junior Colson.

Bowman understands what it means to be a former player who has now transitioned to being a coach.

"You see the other side. As a player, you realize how much goes into it from a coaching perspective," Bowman said. "It just allowed me to understand that coaching is really all about servicing the players and being available to give them what they need so that they can go out there and mirror you, as a coach."

The Chargers' defense was underwhelming in the 2023 season, but with Bowman coaching up the pass rush — the team could return to proper form in 2024.
