Without teamwork nothing is possible. Moreover, if any organization lacks teamwork. Then it will hamper its success rate. Thus the organization will fall. Also, it will affect the environment the people are working in.

Furthermore, the organization has a different hierarchy of teamwork. So that the workload gets divided. And each team has an expert who guides different team members with his prior experience

The organization has a division of three teams – Top Level, Middle Level, Lower Level

The Top Level: This team of the organization decides the goals of the company. Furthermore, they understand the need for different sectors of society. And makes policies to maximize the profit of the company. Moreover, it also works on the development of the company and its employees.

Every company has a certain goal in mind before making any policy. This part of the organization analyzes the goal. So that the company should be certain whether the approaching of this goal is profitable or not. For instance, this part of the organization consists of the Board of Directors , Chief Executive Officers Etc.

The Middle Level: The middle level consists of the manager and the Supervisors . This team of workers focuses on the implementation of the policies made by the Top-level. Furthermore, the team assigns various tasks to the employee sector, so that they may work towards the goals of the company. Moreover, the Middle level inspects and keeps a regular check on their work.

In short, they bridge the gap between the top level and the middle level. In order to be a part of this team, a person should be qualified enough. Because this ensures that the person is having the knowledge of all the work he is assigning to the employees.

Only then the person would be capable enough to guide the lower level. Above all the main work is to meet the demands of the employee, so that the organization can work in a better way.

The Lower level: The Lower Level consists of the employees. They work on the tasks assigned to them by the Middle Level. The coordination of teamwork is much needed in the employment sector. As the need to submit each task within a period of time.

So that the organization may run smoothly. The base of the organization is the employment sector. As without them, the application of policies isn’t possible.

Thus from our childhood only we knew about teamwork. Because our mentors understood the importance of teamwork. That is the reason they always guided us on the right path.

At last, the teamwork team generates a relationship between two people. As we all know that human is a social being, so it is beneficial for the environment of a person.

Leaders inspire confidence and builds trust among people to attain objectives. In an organization, leadership is required at all levels to lead the team members towards organizational development. However, leadership alone cannot attain anything superior unless the entire team follows the leader and works together with the leader to achieve the goals (Dubrin, 2010). Leadership and teamwork are the two most important keywords for the success of any organization. Poor leadership cannot lead a team to success and a group of unmotivated and incompetent team cannot help a leader to achieve great success (Kouzes & Posner, 2007). To achieve organizational goals, the team must work as a whole under the leader and the leader must exhibit behavioural skills that can motivate the team (Bass, 1990). Today, there are several leadership theories that tries to define leadership as transactional, transformational, autocratic or charismatic. However, to achieve success as a team, the leader must exhibit participative leadership where each member of the team is valued and each member is offered the opportunity to participate in organizational development (Dubrin, 2010). This essay looks into the different theories of leadership and urges that collaborative leadership is the best style for leaders to build team and achieve teamwork capabilities. This paper also looks at some of the companies that have incorporated collaborative leadership style to achieve success.

While traditional leadership styles tend to be more authoritative and directive; modern leadership styles are generally flexible, transparent, and inspirational; with most leaders leading by objectives. We tend to think of communication and collaboration as natural outcomes of working together. As soon as two people (or a hundred or a thousand) start working in tandem, they necessarily talk, share information, and exert themselves towards some common objective. However, this is a misconception. Such circumstances reduce the exchanges that we have with other people to a back-and-forth with no purpose other than increasing each other’s knowledge—and, hence, helping to get on with the job.

But effective communication and collaboration can be much more. By talking and sharing information, we change people’s minds, excite them to join us, and encourage them to perform at a level that they could not have imagined on their own. In this sense, communication and collaboration are instrumental. They are strategic, and can alter the landscape in our favor. In my practice, I’ve seen how everyday leaders deploy communication and collaboration (in a variety of forms) to create and promote new possibilities—literally, to change outcomes.

Everyday leaders rely on communication and collaboration as ongoing, extensible processes that can last for the duration of a project as it unfolds. These leaders are always learning. They listen as much as they send out directives or speak before their assembled employees. They understand that the process itself brings people closer, raising their spirits and level of commitment. Whatever else happens, such leaders ensure that information flows in as many directions as necessary to keep people on board and engaged. This type of sharing creates crucial, mutually supportive relationships.

Yet while I address communication and collaboration together, I don’t see them as the same. That is, you can communicate without collaborating, though the former may (over time) give rise to the latter as people are drawn towards the same orbit. Communication that precedes collaboration will, of course, continue as the one gives way to the other. But in essence, when you communicate, you create an occasional relationship that does not require a shared objective; there may be one, though we often communicate with opponents.

On the other hand, when you collaborate, there is always a common objective, even though people may not agree on everything. Think of Republicans or Democrats— they fight internally, but each party shares the overriding objective of gaining the most power.

Yet notwithstanding their different conceptual outlines, communication and collaboration share some important features. For the everyday leader, both should be the product of careful calculation: What should I say? When? To whom? For what purpose? The opportunity to share information and ideas, and to learn from other people, should never be approached casually. There will not be that many chances for a do-over, so it’s important to do it right the first time and to make a good impression. Even as you learn by doing, consider every opportunity for an exchange as a type of elevator speech: Get it right, and good things can develop for there.

Whether a situation involves communication and/or collaboration, the point is to create synergy between or among the people involved. Such people should develop habits of mind—in effect, they should be trained—to act together with you in ways that would not have otherwise occurred. They may also be trained to act together in teams, producing a far greater impact than anyone might have on their own. Everyday leaders need to create such synergies, since their resources are often limited.

Several of my clients have experienced communication and collaboration in action, that is, in their active modes beyond mere information exchange. These leaders’ ultimate objective was to engage people, and raise their interest in a project. They did so creatively and economically, based on what they could offer in return. In this regard, they understood that communication and collaboration are well-lit two-way streets (and sometimes the discursive equivalent of multi-lane highways). They’re not some back-county road with no yellow line, marked only with signs that announce the leader’s intentions.

One of my clients, a young lawyer, used effective communication to promote a project in his firm, drawing his partners into an ad hoc collaboration. He aroused enough interest so that they asked him to collaborate. He was psychologically adept. He knew what the group wanted (and, obviously, provided grounds for them to believe that they’d get it). Most important, he used communication to enhance his profile and inspire trust in his leadership .

Another of my clients, a young woman, learned how to deploy communication strategies to outflank the competition . Along the way, she discarded strategies that worked in her family but clearly did not work in a wider, more impersonal, less matriarchal environment. She had to adjust her modus operandi based on the feedback she received.

Feedback is a form of collaboration! In the process, she jettisoned inherited notions of how to get her points across. In effect, she grew up— and, hence, grew into her position as a leader through spontaneous, intellectual give and take.

Even when we do not elicit give and take, we should use it effectively when it (necessarily) occurs.

Finally, another client, an investment manager, had to convince his team through effective communication that they ought to collaborate on a project that made them uncomfortable. He did it by demonstrating a likely impressive payoff. He made logical sense, encouraging them to think past their (somewhat irrational) reservations.

So, as you think about these everyday leaders, consider these concerns:

  • Both communication and collaboration are instruments of effective leadership, providing opportunities for a two-way exchange of information and ideas.
  • They help leaders draw people closer to how such leaders hope such people will think.
  • They create a type of synergism both within organized teams and on an ad hoc basis among people at large.
  • Leaders should calculate how/when/to whom they intend to communicate, since do-overs are not always possible and no opportunity should be wasted.
  • Communication is an ongoing process, not just a one-off, and continues even after it gives way (if it does) to a collaboration.

The people I have described were not experts in communication. They learned along the way. They discovered that without effective communication and collaboration, they could not succeed at effective leadership. Leaders are always generating ideas and improving their ideas based on what they learn from others.

One day an unusual quarrel happened between the two about who was better. Each one thinks of himself to be better than the other. While the elephant advocated it was better to be strong, the monkey was adamant that being fast and agile was better.

Unable to resolve the matter, they headed to the wise owl and posed the same question to him. The owl promised to answer the question provided they had to take a challenge. Teamwork is the collective effort made by each member of a team to achieve the team goal. Individually, we all have certain skills, and we are good in one area. Example 1: The Student Council President

Activity: Elected school council president

As the elected Student Council President of Crestwood Secondary School, I inherited a disengaged student body and an underperforming council. I know how crucial a positive school spirit can be during our teenage years, so I decided it was time for us all to come together and reinvigorate our environment.

My first mission was to understand the root causes of the disengagement. I set up focus groups, had 1-1 conversations with as many students as I could, and scheduled meetings with club and team leaders. It became evident there was a clear pattern: many students felt disconnected because there was a distinct lack of diversity and inclusivity in school events and decision-making processes.

Addressing these challenges required me to implement several different strategies at once. Leading the council’s event planning, I organized a diverse range of activities that catered to everyone’s interests. We threw a lively multicultural festival where everyone got to celebrate their diverse backgrounds and lean into where they came from. There was also an exciting talent show that let people showcase hidden skills, and a “Shark Tank” style competition to bolster and showcase entrepreneurial spirit.

I also spearheaded the “Student Voice” initiative. Every month, we hold forums so students can share their thoughts and worries directly with those in charge at our school.

Looking back, it’s incredible how much everything has improved. Attendance at school events shot up, and the student satisfaction surveys we conducted showed that students reported feeling 97% happier and more connected with the school environment. The hallways were buzzing with a renewed sense of school pride.

Heading this effort really honed my ability to lead others and work as part of a larger team. More importantly, it sparked a strong dedication in me for creating positive impacts within our community. It ended up being the catalyst I needed to start up the social enterprise that I’ve been working on for the past 6 months.

STAR Breakdown:

  • Situation: Inherited a disengaged student body and ineffective student council.
  • Task : Revitalize student life to create a more inclusive and engaging school community.
  • Action: Conducted research, organized diverse events, and established platforms for student voice.

Activity: Founded and led a youth-driven charity focused on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

I was really bothered by how little people knew about HIV/AIDS and all the false information being spread in my community. At the same time, it was obvious to me how my classmates were missing out on the right information and support to make smart decisions about their health. The lack of discussion around this issue felt painful to me. I couldn’t just stand by and watch, I felt compelled to take action.

As a teenager at sixteen, I took the initiative to create “Let’s Stop AIDS,” aiming to educate peers with up-to-date information and raise awareness about this virus through our non-profit efforts. It wasn’t easy. I had to convince my school to let me use a classroom for meetings, rally a group of like-minded friends to join me, and even face some pushback from adults who thought I was “too young” to tackle such a sensitive issue. It was hard, but something inside me told me to keep pushing.

Our first challenge was figuring out how to reach our target audience – other high school students. Traditional awareness campaigns felt outdated and ineffective. So, I chose to go with a more imaginative route instead. We held various workshops where people learned through doing – whether it was role-playing real life situations or creating artwork related to what they studied. It really helped everyone find the info relatable. By tapping into social media, we spread our message far and wide. Partnering with local schools allowed us to give lively presentations that did much more than list statistics.

All that effort turned out to be worth it in the end. In just one year, we managed to share our message of learning and self-confidence with over 2000 young minds. The awareness event we organized was a resounding success. Local groups joined forces with health professionals and individuals living with HIV/AIDS to share personal stories that really opened up conversations in our community. But perhaps the most impactful initiative we launched was a peer-to-peer mentorship program. Mentors who understood their struggles reached out to help our HIV-positive youth by offering guidance along with fostering a strong sense of community. Seeing the difference these relationships made for young folks grappling with such hard news was really something special.

I discovered through “Let’s Stop AIDS” that true leadership isn’t just about holding a position. It’s recognizing when something needs to be done, stepping up to address it, and inspiring others to join you in the effort. Pushing through tough times, thinking outside the box, and genuinely making a positive impact are what it’s all about. 

Going through all of this solidified how much I care about health services. It’s inspired me not just academically but also personally. I’m ready now more than ever before to fight hard on behalf of patients while pushing forward real progress.
