The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms for Students

Student Safety

Focus on education, attendance rates, discipline issues, dress code enforcement, cost for families, impact on self-esteem.

The debate over whether students should wear school uniforms has been going on for more than a decade. Some people argue that uniforms have a positive impact on the school environment by promoting inclusivity, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Others fear that school uniforms prevent kids from expressing themselves through their clothing choices.

The research on school uniforms is often mixed. While some schools have found uniforms to be beneficial, other research has found that they have little effect. Some studies have even reached the conclusion that requiring school uniforms can be harmful for students.

Let's take a closer look at some of the potential benefits, as well as the challenges, of requiring students to wear uniforms.

Some people think that school uniforms can help make schools safer for kids. When Long Beach, CA, required all students in grades K–8 to wear uniforms, reports of assault and battery decreased by 34%.

Additionally, assault with a deadly weapon decreased by 50%, fighting incidents declined 51%, and sex offenses dropped by 74%. Possession of weapons dropped by 52%, possession of drugs went down 69%, and vandalism was lowered by 18%.

The Sparks Middle School in Nevada reported a decrease in gang activity after instituting a uniform policy. They also reported a drop in fights, graffiti, property damage, and battery. Overall, there was a 63% drop in police reports.

Other proponents of school uniforms report that it prevents students from concealing weapons under clothing. And some also believe intruders would be recognized faster, making the students and staff safer in the event someone from the community tries to enter the school.

Not all studies have found that uniforms reduce discipline issues, however. In fact, a peer-reviewed study found that school uniforms increased the average number of assaults by about 14 per year in the most violent schools.  The Miami-Dade County Public Schools Office of Education Evaluation and Management found that fights in middle schools nearly doubled within one year of making uniforms mandatory.

For many students, clothing can be a major source of stress. Not having certain brand name clothing or not wearing fashionable items could lead to feelings of insecurity.

Some people feel students are better able to concentrate on school when they all wear the same clothing. Researchers in Australia noted that students who wear uniforms had improved discipline and academic performance.

Not all studies have found that uniforms improve grades, however. In fact, at least one study found that school uniforms had a negative effect on achievement.

Kids may show up to school more often when they’re wearing uniforms. A study by researchers at the University of Houston found that the average attendance rate for girls in middle and high school increased by 0.3 to 0.4 percent after school uniforms became mandatory. A study by Youngstown State University also found that attendance rates increased and suspensions decreased once students began wearing uniforms.

Students may also be more likely to show up to school on time when they have to wear uniforms. If they don’t have to spend time choosing what to wear every morning, students are able to get out the door more quickly. This means fewer late arrivals.

Proponents of uniforms report that it can improve behavior in students. One school that found this to be true is the John Adams Middle School in Albuquerque, NM. When they mandated school uniforms, discipline referrals dropped from 1,565 in the first semester of the previous year to 405.

An Australian study also concluded that students wearing uniforms were more disciplined and they listened significantly better. Classes were also more likely to start on time.

Not all studies have found this, however. Some research has found that disciplinary issues and bullying didn’t decrease after instituting a mandatory uniform policy.

Many school officials spend a lot of time policing dress codes . Enforcing policies can require a lot of resources as teachers may send kids to the office, and administrators have to determine whether clothing is too baggy, inappropriate, or revealing.

Kids who violate dress codes may spend a lot of time in the office awaiting consequences, or they may receive suspensions for repeated violations. School uniforms can keep kids in the classroom more and prevent staff from wasting time trying to enforce policies.

Parents may spend less money on school clothes when kids wear uniforms. There is less pressure to buy expensive name-brand clothing, and school uniforms might be more affordable.

Opponents of school uniforms, however, say that requiring parents to buy specific articles of clothing goes against the idea that students should be given free education. When public schools force parents to buy uniforms, this could be placing a hardship on some families.

Proponents of uniforms report that they have a positive impact on student self-esteem . Wearing the same clothing as everyone else means that students don’t have to worry about whether their clothing choices will be acceptable to their peers.

But opponents argue that uniforms may have a negative impact on some students’ body image. Research conducted at Arizona State University found that students without uniform policies actually reported higher self-perception scores than students with uniform policies.

When all students wear the same clothing, they may be more likely to compare themselves to their peers as clothing fits differently on everyone’s body.

The Problem With Uniform Research

Although there are many studies that examine the potential benefits and drawbacks of uniforms, many of them revealed correlation, rather than causation. Just because grades went up or behavioral problems went down, there’s no way of knowing that the reason for the change was due to uniform policy. There are many other factors that may have influenced these issues.

A Word From Verywell

Before any school adopts a uniform policy, it may be wise to review the literature. While there certainly may be a lot of benefits to making uniforms mandatory, there are also some potential drawbacks and challenges you might face. Parents, teachers, and administrators may want to weigh the pros and cons before instituting any type of clothing policy for students.

What To Wear For A Presentation: Your Ultimate Presentation Outfit Style Guide

Table of contents.

Before you take the stage for your next presentation , let’s raid the closet and pick an outfit that will have your audience impressed and make you standout like the thought leader you are.

What you wear is important as it will have a long-lasting impression with your audience. The clothing you wear is one of the first things your audience will see and if you’re not wearing the appropriate outfit, you will not receive the appropriate reaction.

But we’re beyond judging people for what they wear, aren’t we?

Why Your Outfit Matters For A Presentation

Now, we are in a new age where judging one another for what they wear is no longer tolerated but it is embedded in our nurtured upbringing that has us forming conclusions in our subconscious before we even know it.

Psychology plays a role in presentations. Whether it’s the colors we choose for our slides, how we use our body language to communicate, the presentation aids we use and right down to clothing on our backs, each element of a presentation needs to be carefully curated for our intended audience.

What To Wear For A Casual Presentation

presentation high school uniforms

Let’s begin with an outfit good for any occasion.

Throughout your career, you’ll be faced with both formal and informal presentations . More often than not, you’ll be presenting more informal presentations than formal. With the frequency being higher for informal or casual presentations, we need to make sure your closet is well equipped for the occasion.

To be clear, there is nothing too defining of a casual presentation other than that the timing you have to prepare is essentially non-existent and it’s usually presented to a smaller audience. Casual presentations can spring up at any time so the outfit you wear should really reflect who you are on a regular basis.

A casual presentation outfit should be one you feel confident in. It should speak to your character and ensure that you’re not portraying to be someone you’re not. Although we prefaced earlier that your presentation outfit should be adapted to the audience you’re presenting to, it’s going to be quite difficult to do that with a casual presentation as these types of presentations just spring up.

Your natural sphere of influence will help dictate how you dress for a casual presentation as this is the audience you’ll likely be presenting to.

If you spend most of your time in an office environment, a business casual outfit might be the right outfit.

If you’re a trades professor teaching young apprentices how to master a trade, then dirty overalls might be the casual presentation outfit for you.

What To Wear For A Presentation In University

presentation high school uniforms

Throughout your university studies, you’ll be required to present individually and in groups from first year to your final year seminars. Depending on the class, you might even be graded on your outfit. For example, many courses in BBA programs require you to present in business formal attire as if you were out in the real world.

Depending on the class, the requirement might be different, but it never hurts to be the best dressed person in the room.

You’ll want to draw inspiration from the real word and dress either business casual or business formal.

Unlike the real world where you’ll be earning “adult money”, in university you need to be savvy on a budget. Consider shopping at chain stores like H&M and Zara where you can suits and dresses which aren’t brand names yet are still fashionable.

You’ll want to avoid anything too flashy like a red dress. Although it’s important to attract attention and keep your audience engaged, you don’t want them to be distracted with your outfit.

What To Wear For A Business Presentation At Work

You’ve graduated from university and are now working in the corporate world.

Depending on the industry you find a job in, your employer will have different dress code expectations. You’ll likely be asked to dress either business casual or business formal.

We’ve broken down the two into their own categories to help you better understand each one.

Business Casual Outfit

presentation high school uniforms

With most companies adopting a business casual dress code, you’ll likely be placed in a work environment that adopts a business casual outfit approach.

Business casual takes the key elements and ideas of a business formal outfit such as neutral tone colors and dress pants while getting rid of the signature elements like a suit jacket.

However, if you’d still like to add a bit of flair to your outfit, both men and women can throw a sports blazer on top and keep it unbuttoned or do up the second button to keep it interesting.

Business Formal Outfit

presentation high school uniforms

Business formal outfits are timeless.

For the men, a classic, old-fashioned navy suit would be your best outfit for a business formal setting.

For the women, you can’t go wrong with a skirt and a blouse. Feel free to swap the skirt with dress pants should you feel more comfortable wearing pants.

Don’t be afraid to accessorize your outfit as well. As boring as the corporate world may seem, it doesn’t have to be completely boring.

Consider adding a watch or some jewelry to add a pit of pop and personality to the outfit. They can act as great icebreakers and speaking points and also act as a sign of success.

What To Wear For A Presentation At A Conference

presentation high school uniforms

Depending on the conference, you’re best to wear a business casual outfit or a business formal outfit with a few exceptions.

The exceptions being modifications to your outfit depending on the venue.

Unlike a business meeting which may be done in a corporate office with standard office lighting, a presentation at a conference might have a stage, professional lighting and unique presentation aids such as green screens should the presentation be recorded for a later date.

If the venue has stage lights, avoid wearing a shiny suit. Instead, opt for a matte finish option.

If your venue has a background such as black curtains, avoid a black suit. You’ll appear to be a floating head in videos and images.

With the advancement of technology, more presentations are being held as virtual presentations . With a video conference you can get away with less by only worrying about what will be seen in the frame such as your shirt, hair or blouse.

At the end of the day, your outfit is only part of the many presentation aids you can incorporate into your presentation to make it stand out .

Do uniforms make schools better?

Do uniforms make schools better?

Schools, parents, and students frequently clash over the issue of regulating what students may and may not wear to school. These controversies often pegged to the culture war of the moment touch on everything from gender and sexuality to politics, race, and religion. In 2021, a group of about 50 students in Georgia protested their middle school’s dress code for being discriminatory against BIPOC girls by wearing t-shirts every Friday emblazoned with the words “sexist,” “racist,” and “classist.” In 2022, a fight between students, staff, and police officers broke out at a Pennsylvania high school when hats and hoodies were banned as part of a revision by the school board to the school’s dress code. And in 2023, two Michigan middle schoolers, via their mother, sued their school district after they were banned from wearing “Let’s Go Brandon” sweatshirts.

Are school uniforms the best solution to this contentious debate? If every student is wearing the same outfit, will a host of campus problems be solved? Researchers are divided over how much of an impact — if any — dress policies have on student learning. There are multiple studies with conflicting conclusions, plus books such as 2018’s The Debate About School Uniforms , but the argument wears on, with a list of pros and cons on each side.

Why do some public schools have uniforms?

In the 1980s, public schools were often compared unfavorably to Catholic schools. Noting the perceived benefit that uniforms conferred upon Catholic schools, some public schools decided to adopt a school uniform policy.

President Clinton provided momentum to the school uniform movement when he said in his 1996 State of the Union speech, “If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms.”

The pros and cons of school uniforms

According to proponents, school uniforms:.

  • Help prevent gangs from forming on campus

  • Encourage discipline

  • Help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes

  • Help identify intruders in the school

  • Diminish economic and social barriers between students

  • Increase a sense of belonging and school pride

  • Improve attendance

Opponents contend that school uniforms:

  • Violate a student’s right to freedom of expression

  • Are simply a Band-Aid on the issue of school violence

  • Make students a target for bullies from other schools

  • Are a financial burden for poor families

  • Are an unfair additional expense for parents who pay taxes for a free public education

  • Are difficult to enforce in public schools

Uniforms vs. dress codes

Schools and districts vary widely in how closely they adhere to the concept of uniformity.

What’s a dress code?

Generally, dress codes are more relaxed than uniform policies. Sometimes, however, dress codes are quite strict with requirements that are potentially viewed as biased based on race or gender. In 2020, two Black male students in Texas, cousins with West Indian heritage, were suspended for wearing dreadlocks in supposed violation of the district’s hair and grooming policy, part of the dress code. The elder one, a senior, was told he couldn’t attend prom or graduation until his dreads were trimmed. In 2022, girls on the track team at an Albany, NY high school were sent home for wearing sports bras at practice.

Uniforms are certainly easier for administrators to enforce than dress codes, largely because the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) can be depended upon to protect a student’s “right to express themselves.” The ACLU believes dress codes are often used to, “shame girls, force students to conform to gender stereotypes… punish students who wear political and countercultural messages. Such policies can be used as cover for racial discrimination… Dress codes can also infringe on a student’s religious rights…” To successfully enforce a dress code, insists the ACLU, the school must prove the student’s attire, “is disruptive to school activities.”

The ACLU’s dress code stance is regularly supported by federal courts , like the 2023 lower court ruling in North Carolina that ended a charter school decree that girls couldn’t wear pants to school. ACLU lawyers claimed this violated Title IX because the dress code “discriminated against female students by limiting their ability to fully participate in school activities, such as using the playground.” The U.S. Supreme Court later declined to take up a case challenging the lower court’s ruling.

Check with your school to see what the dress code is, as they can be fairly specific. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, for example, the dress code prohibits :

  • Symbols, mottoes, words or acronyms that convey crude, vulgar, profane, violent, death-oriented, gang-related, sexually explicit, or sexually suggestive messages.
  • Symbols, mottoes, words or acronyms advertising tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia.
  • Symbols, mottoes, words or acronyms identifying a student as a member of a secret or overtly antisocial group or gang or that identifies a student as a member of an organization that professes violence or hatred toward one’s fellow man.
  • Visible and permanent tattoos/brands incompatible with the standards set forth herein shall be covered to prohibit their display.
  • Excessively large or baggy clothes

What’s a uniform?

School uniforms worldwide can widely range from nondescript to bizarre. (Extreme examples from China, Australia, and the UK on this YouTube video ) Most public school outfits in the USA are quite casual, with a “ common type ” for boys often a polo shirt in a solid color, with pants in khaki, black, or navy blue. A girl’s uniform is often a skirt and a white buttoned-up shirt. Dress shoes are frequently required for both genders.

In the United States, low-income families spend an average of $249 on a child’s school uniform annually, far less than the typical Australian student’s $578. But still, the cost is sometimes viewed as unfair because public education is intended to be free, paid by tax dollars, not “a stress for families on lower incomes.” The ACLU believes that public schools should provide free school uniforms , because the expense is unconstitutional, and it increases wealth inequity.

What research says about school uniforms

In 2006, Virginia Draa, professor at Youngstown State University, reviewed the impact of school uniforms at 64 public high schools that had larger percentages of economically disadvantaged and minority students than other urban schools. Her conclusion surprised her: “I really went into this thinking uniforms don’t make a difference, but I came away seeing that they do… I was absolutely floored.” Her analysis determined that the schools with uniforms improved their students attendance, and graduation rates rose an average almost 11 percent.

In 2022, Ohio State University and University of Pennsylvania researchers reached a contrary opinion in their report titled “ School Uniforms and Students Behavior: Is There a Link? ” Their view was that, in general, evidence that school uniforms improve social skills in the students was “inconclusive.” The solitary praise they provided to uniform-wearing was noting there was “some indication that low-income students in schools that required uniforms demonstrated better school attendance than low-income students in schools that did not.”

What to believe? Jury is still out.

What do students think about uniforms?

A student discussion: pros and cons of uniforms

Editor’s note: This video is part of our high school milestones series about communication skills. The students in this video discuss the pros and cons of school uniforms.

A University of Nevada, Reno, survey of 1,848 middle school students, published in 2022, revealed that 90 percent did not like wearing a uniform to school . Only 30 percent believed the uniforms “might reduce discipline issues, a mere 17 percent thought the uniform helped them focus at school, 34 percent believed their school was safer due to the uniforms and 37 percent said, “I worry less about my appearance” due to the uniform requirement.”

An earlier study, also in Nevada, displayed similar unpopularity with newly instituted uniforms among middle school students. However, when the researchers looked into school discipline and local police records and compared them to the prior year’s data, discipline referrals were down 10 percent, there were 63 percent fewer police log reports, and incidences of graffiti, fights, and gang-related activity were all down.

It’s a big issue

A new trend is the mounting pressure to establish dress codes for teachers. Apparently, the same casual mindset toward revealing outfits is cropping up in the ranks of our teachers.

The debate over uniforms in public schools encompasses many larger issues than simply what children should wear to school. It touches on issues of school improvement, freedom of expression, and hot-button culture wars. It’s no wonder the debate rages on.

MLB uniform and style buffs, this edition of the newsletter is for you

We go long on the end of an era for a uniform aficionado, Ken has a note on Yankees pitcher Luis Gil and the Baseball Card of the Week features an interesting facial expression. I’m Levi Weaver, here with Ken Rosenthal — welcome to The Windup!

Founder of Uni Watch walks away

If sports style is your thing, you may know the name Paul Lukas. He’s made a career out of giving his opinions on everything from uniforms to, as Tyler Kepner put it in  his story this week , “things that make you go hmmm in sports.”

After 25 years on the beat, Lukas is moving on. Tyler spoke to him ahead of his retirement — here’s a great quote from the story about the link between sports fandom and brand loyalty:

“… This is what Coke learned with New Coke: that if you change the product, brand loyalty is not enough. But in sports, the quality of the product is changing all the time. Your team can be good one year and bad the next year. Players get hurt, get traded, they retire, they cycle in and out. But you are still loyal to that logo and those colors and that uniform.

“It’s a really irrational, nonsensical form of brand loyalty. I don’t think there’s really anything like it — except maybe patriotism and religion — where it really defies our standard notions of why we’re loyal to something. That’s the power of the uniform. And I think that’s why people are so nuts about uniforms.”

While his website, Uni Watch, will live on (the weekend editor is taking over), Lukas officially retires this weekend. We spoke to Tyler   — a uniform aficionado himself — to get the story behind the story.

For any newcomers: What is Uni Watch, and why do we care so much about it?

As its creator Paul Lukas says,  Uni Watch  is a website dedicated to “the obsessive study of athletic aesthetics.” His alternate slogan is “for people who get it” — that is, not everyone will be interested in the visual presentation of sports. But if you are, you get what he’s doing, which is pointing out, analyzing, and reporting on any and all things related to what we see beyond the physical movements and strategies of the athletes. It’s way more than uniforms and logos, although uniforms, of course, are the most obvious and forward-facing element of sports style.

Everybody has a personal sense of style, an individual idea of what looks good and what doesn’t. Whether or not you’re a sports fan, you can say, “That looks great,” or “that looks weird.” So I think Paul has tapped into a lot of that, which partly explains why Uni Watch has been so enduring.

It seems like it would take a fairly unique person to make this concept work. What’s one thing the world should know about Lukas?

Paul is incredibly curious. Think of anything that’s hiding in plain sight — something you see all the time but probably never paused to think about. The little button on the top of a baseball hat (a “squatchee”), the way some signs say “Beware of Dog” while others say “Beware of The Dog,” the oddly shaped canopy structures by Flushing Bay near Citi Field — Paul takes delight in investigating those types of things. Basically he’s a very, very detail-oriented person who pays close attention to the visual landscape around us — especially the stuff made by humans, as opposed to the natural world.

What was your favorite part of the interview that didn’ t quite make  the final story ?

We were talking about how in the 1970s and ’80s, the traditional sports look seemed to be totally flipped: There were Astroturf fields, pullover jerseys, powder-blue color schemes, sansabelt pants, and so on. Some people fretted about it. Here’s what Paul said:

“Everything just seemed a little more plastic — literally, in the case of the field — and that seemed to mirror what was going on in a lot of other aspects of the world. It sort of seemed like that’s just where baseball was going. But then Astroturf fell out of fashion, Camden Yards was the start of the pushback against the cookie-cutter stadiums, grass came back and then by 1993, every team was back to wearing button-front jerseys and belted pants — no more powder blues. It’s interesting, having covered this for 25 years, the pendulum often does come back. I think that’s always worth keeping in mind.”

More Tyler : His  Sliders column this week  examines an interesting question: Should umpires be allowed to use PitchCom? Would that lead to better ball and strike calls?

Ken’s Notebook: How Luis Gil became a Yankee

Luis Gil was brilliant again  Thursday, allowing one hit in 6 1/3 innings in the Yankees’ 5-0 victory over the Mariners. Here is an item on him from  my latest notes column :

When it comes to the acquisition of Luis Gil, the Yankees were both lucky and good. Lucky because they acquired Gil from the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Jake Cave when the right-hander was 19 and still in rookie ball. Good because they saw qualities in Gil that made him a target, then enhanced those qualities through player development.

As  The Athletic ’s Chris Kirschner wrote Thursday in his  detailed look at Gil’s ascent , the Yankees first became aware of the pitcher in 2017. Travis Chapman, the team’s current first-base coach, was then the manager of the team’s Dominican Summer League affiliate. General manager Brian Cashman said Chapman, after watching Gil pitch against the DSL Yankees, advised club officials to put him on their radar. The Yankees, using their technology in the Dominican, began tracking Gil through data and video.

The designation of Cave for assignment on March 12, 2018, in Cashman’s words, prompted, “a lot of action.” Teams were willing to give up a player for Cave rather than risk him going through the waiver process. The Twins balked at several players the Yankees requested before finally agreeing to part with Gil, Cashman said.

The Yankees plugged Gil into senior director of pitching Sam Briend’s development program. The pitcher made his major-league debut in 2021, producing a 3.07 ERA in six starts, but his progress stalled when he underwent Tommy John surgery on May 21, 2022. His return this season has been nothing short of spectacular. Gil, 26, has a 2.11 ERA in 10 starts, and last Saturday against the White Sox , set a Yankees rookie record with 14 strikeouts.

“Great work by Cash and his staff there to identify some interesting stuff but also to bring him along developmentally,” Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey said. “He was a DSL guy at the time who had a really good arm with some command issues and dealt with some elbow trouble.

“We actually liked Jake for our team a lot at the time and he had a really nice start here in that 2018 season. He battled some injuries after that and has still carved out some good roles along the way. But we certainly felt Gil was one where the Yankees had identified some upside skills there and then developed him well.”

Baseball Card of the Week

presentation high school uniforms

Before he retired, Ken “Hawk” Harrelson spent 33 years as a radio broadcaster for the Chicago White Sox, receiving the Ford C. Frick award — the broadcaster’s door into the Hall of Fame — in 2020.

But before that, he was a fairly solid nine-year big-league player, even making one All-Star game (1968, a year in which he finished third in AL MVP voting).

I’m so fascinated by the face he’s making on this 1971 Topps card. It’s expressive, but really undefined. Was he receiving some good-natured ribbing? Telling a story about someone he doesn’t like? Expressing skepticism when  hearing about sabermetrics  for the first time?

Handshakes and High Fives

You know his name. You know his reputation. Angel Hernandez is the umpire everyone loves to hate. Does he deserve to be maligned as much as he is? Draw your own conclusions — in their story, Sam Blum and Cody Stavenhagen  paint an interesting portrait  of one of MLB’s biggest villains.

Is it ever too early for trade deadline talk? (No.) Jim Bowden tackled what  contenders could do  at the deadline in part one of a mailbag, and answered a more varied mix of questions in  part two .

The World Baseball Classic gifted us with one of the best (if not  the  best) baseball moments  of 2023, and the tournament  will return in 2026 . Two new venues have joined the mix — Minute Maid Park in Houston and Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico — along with the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo and loanDepot park in Miami.

Can the White Sox catch a break this year?  This game-ending play  proves that no, no they cannot.

Commissioner Rob Manfred says  MLB is taking its time  when it comes to investigating the illegal bookmaking operation that led to the Shohei Ohtani-Ippei Mizuhara saga (and to an investigation into  a former Angel ).

Manfred also gave an update on where the league is at when it comes to  implementing robot umps .

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner doesn’t seem keen on  spending over $300 million on payroll  again next year. Can the team pursue  Juan Soto   and  spend less money? Chris Kirschner looks into it.

Earlier this week  we told you about the college baseball team playing for a school that soon will no longer exist. Here’s a full story on the  Birmingham-Southern College Panthers , who — reminder — would clinch a spot at the DIII baseball championship with two wins this weekend.

You can buy tickets to every MLB game  here .
