How to Include Public Speaking Skills on Your Resume (+ Examples)

Elizabeth Openshaw

While it might send you into a spin and get your knees knocking at the very thought of having to stand up in front of people and give a presentation, the skill of public speaking is considered a valuable asset within many professions. Public speaking on your resume is a great quality to add to your repertoire. Many employers place a premium value on public speaking skills.

Candidates who possess polished and articulate public speaking skills are often placed in prominent roles within a company, with many finding themselves on a fast-track to securing leadership positions. This is because a leader often needs to speak and present to a roomful of people. You can’t ask someone who’s shy and retiring to do this. Or someone with a distinct lack of confidence. So you turn to the employees who have shown promise and know how to hold a crowd.

But what if you are angling for another role? How do you include public speaking skills on a resume?

No need to fret. You have come to the right place. We have the know-how you need to make employers aware of your valuable communication style by showing how to present public speaking on your resume.

What is public speaking?

First up, let’s quantify what public speaking actually is. It is the ability to stand up in front of an audience and deliver an oral speech or presentation. It works whether that is a live audience or a remote one, as you are still presenting to a large number of people in public.

It can be used to sell a product or a service to a client, galvanize your team, or pitch for a new contract. Presentations can incorporate many different topics and have many different goals – to entertain, educate, inform, or even influence listeners.

The presentation needs to be engaging, powerful, and memorable. You have got to hold the audience in the palm of your hand so as not to lose their interest. These are great assets to have throughout your career.

These types of presentations can be the difference between failure and success. So, presenting information effectively and clearly is key when connecting with your audience and getting your message out there.

Why do public speaking skills matter?

It’s important to understand why public speaking skills are in such high demand. For someone comfortable with communicating ideas effortlessly, public speaking skills might seem like something that everyone can do, at the drop of a hat. After all, we are communicating with other people every single day of the year.

However, lots of people are not that comfortable when speaking in a public setting. Many shrink from being called upon in class, business, or conference meetings, or other settings where there is a large group. Others are wary of being asked to make presentations, train up other employees, or take on a role that puts them under the spotlight.

Call it stage fright, if you will. The average professional just isn’t all that excited about being the center of attention in any training session or discussion. And employers understand that fact. Most organizations have dealt with employees who struggle to communicate ideas when they’re put in those types of settings. As a result, those employers recognize just how rare and important public speaking skills truly are--and really value those job candidates who possess them.

Read our experts' opinion on the best skills to put on your resume in 2023 .

Public speaking and communication skills list

Unlike some types of skills, public speaking is not a single skill that you can simply list on a resume. Instead, public speaking skills encompass a variety of skills that combine to make you come across as an effective public communicator on your resume . Moreover, you are unlikely to find too many job postings that specifically ask for public speaking skills.

Instead, many of these postings will mention relevant key skills that might make you an effective public speaker. By learning to recognize these communication capabilities, you can more effectively convey your public speaking ability to a potential employer.

They include:

The ability to read your audience

One of the most important public speaking skills is the ability to accurately read your audience, or “read the room” as this modern phrase sums it up, by picking up on subtle, nonverbal cues of your attendees. You should be able to determine what they need to hear, adjusting your communication during the speech to accommodate their reaction. Do they seem engaged? Are they visibly bored? Restless? Confused?

A speaker who can read the room well knows how to stay on the right track to get across their message.

An articulate presentation of ideas

Are you an articulate speaker? In this scenario, articulate doesn’t just mean the ability to speak clearly. It means being able to convey complex ideas in an easily understood manner. If your skills include being articulate, be sure to mention those attributes of public speaking in your resume.

An engaging presence and style

Do you command presence when you are on a stage, enter a room, or during a meeting? Have you got that certain je ne sais quoi or X factor? The best public speakers, trainers, and educators have an engaging way about them. They also have a style that captures and sustains the attention of any audience. Employers can always utilize employees with these types of public speaking skills.

The ability to write a speech or presentation

Whether you’re a solid writer or someone who composes presentations on the fly, based on something you scribbled on the back of an envelope 10 minutes ago, composition skills are critical. If your public speaking skills include the ability to compose presentations, be sure to convey that information on your resume. And don’t forget to include key composition skills like research ability, organization of ideas, and storytelling.

Knowledge of presentation technology

These days, no set of public speaking skills is complete without some sort of familiarity with technology. For example, skills in this area include the ability to create presentation slides and manage the functional operation of a presentation.

But it can strike horror into the heart of any audience member when a speaker stands up, declaring, “I’ve just got 100 slides to get through this morning.” While PowerPoint presentations are commonly used for seminars, meetings, and other public speaking engagements, keep these to a minimum, reduce the number of words, and pack them full of images.

Your slides should not make that much sense without you telling the story alongside. You want members of the audience to be focused on you speaking--not on the slides.

Key Takeaway

KEY TAKEAWAY

Don't just say that you have public speaking skills. Instead, describe those specific skills that demonstrate your oratory abilities.

Job descriptions might mention leading meetings, presenting information, or speaking at conferences. This can encompass many job titles, such as teachers and educators, managers, and sales and marketing positions.

Examples of public speaking skills on a resume

Now that you have a clearer idea of what public speaking skills are, let’s put it into practice by showing off some examples of how to include public speaking on your resume.

You can tailor the examples below to suit your own situations, positions, and responsibilities.

Showcases well-honed public speaking skills, developed over the course of a 10-year career as a sales trainer, marketing consultant, and seminar speaker.

Conducted client / employee workshops for ABC Corp on a bi-annual basis.

Final thoughts

Best of luck with your ongoing job search.

5 Better Words For “Extensive Experience” On Your CV

One of the most overused words in any person’s CV or resume is “extensive experience.” We’ve all used it before, and employers are generally tired of hearing it. In this article, we’ll look at synonyms for extensive experience so you can start impressing prospective employers from the get-go.

What Is Another Way To Say “Extensive Experience”?

“Extensive experience” is an overused phrase in CVs and many employers are tired of it. It’s important to mix it up to try and persuade an employer to read your CV. You might want to try “highly experienced” or “comprehensive experience” or “considerable experience” instead.

What Is Another Way To Say "Extensive Experience"?

Before we dive into the article, we’ll cover the most useful words here. We’ll expand on them later, but we believe these to be some of the best synonyms for you to use in place of “extensive experience.”

  • Highly experienced
  • Comprehensive experience
  • Considerable experience
  • Vast experience

Expert Knowledge

Highly experienced.

We’ll start by running you through “highly experienced” as an alternative. It’s the only replacement on this list that uses “experienced” in the verb form (and “highly” is an adverb used to describe it).

“Highly experienced” means that someone has achieved a high level of understanding or knowledge in a particular field or skill. We use it as an adverb + verb combination to show that we’ve specifically gone out of our way to achieving this level of experience.

Unlike everything else we’ll be mentioning after this, “experienced” is a verb here. In the other cases (as well as with “extensive experience”), we use “experience” as a noun. This makes “highly experienced” a unique choice in itself, but it’s still a remarkably popular one.

  • I am highly experienced at working with children.
  • I am highly experienced with working with machines.
  • I am highly experienced at owning my own company and building it up from the foundations.
  • I am highly experienced in matters to do with psychology, owing to my excellent education at a high-level university.

As you can see from these examples, we use “I am” before writing “highly experienced” in all cases. We need to include “am” as a verb before saying “experienced” because it requires it as an auxiliary (or helping) verb.

Comprehensive Experience

Let’s look at the first of the nouns on the list. When we use “comprehensive experience,” we can also replace the word “experience” with either “knowledge” or “understanding.” Choose whichever one you think works best for the context of your application.

“Comprehensive experience” shows that you’ve put a great deal of effort into understanding something to a “comprehensive” degree. That usually means you have a full understanding of something and that generally, you’re able to teach someone else fairly quickly too.

As we mentioned, “experience” can be substituted with either “knowledge” or “understanding” here and work to the same tone. Make sure you know the direct audience of your CV before deciding to change it, though.

  • I have comprehensive experience with all of the major software types on most operating machines.
  • I have comprehensive knowledge of the human psyche and how to approach difficult situations.
  • I have a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of mathematical theory.
  • I have comprehensive experience with heavy machinery.

We use “I have” before using “experience” in the noun form in this way. Sometimes, we use “I have a” if we’re talking more about an “understanding” of something, but that’s the only case we might use it.

Generally, stick to “I have experience” in all cases to make sure you get it grammatically correct.

Considerable Experience

“Considerable experience” works in the same way as “comprehensive experience.” We can replace “experience” with “knowledge” or “understanding” here, though it’s most likely that we use “experience” in most cases.

“Considerable experience” means that you have spent time learning the ins and outs of something. “Considerable” is an adjective used to mean “a great amount” of something.

So, let’s look through some examples of when “considerable experience” or variations of it might be optimal to use.

  • I have considerable experience working with mental illnesses.
  • I have considerable knowledge of the difficulties associated with impoverished neighborhoods.
  • I have considerable experience working with animals.
  • I have considerable experience in dangerous jobs and am happy to take this opportunity.

As you can see from these examples, we can use “considerable experience” in exactly the same way as the overused “extensive experience.” Generally, “considerable” isn’t as popular of a word to use, but it holds a similar meaning that’s just as powerful as “extensive.”

Vast Experience

Next, let’s look at when we might use “vast experience” as an adjective and noun combination. This is less common than some of the other ones, but that might make it all the more impactful when it comes to diversity with your CV.

“Vast experience” means you’ve got a lot of knowledge in an area, just like all the other examples before it. “Vast” means something that is “great” or “large,” and in this sense means we have a substantial amount of experience in a field.

While “vast” is the shortest adjective to describe “experience,” it still holds its own when you look at the impact of the following examples.

  • I have vast experience working in amusement parks.
  • I have vast experience working in retail and know how to please my customers.
  • I have vast knowledge in the field of chemistry and am looking forward to sharing it.
  • I have a vast understanding of all things to do with football and would make a great coach.

We can use “knowledge” and “understanding” in much the same way as the examples we’ve shared above. We can always find synonymous words with “experience,” though sometimes it’s best to know your audience before you try risking it.

After all, “experience” is a buzzword that most CV readers will look for when hiring new employees.

Finally, let’s cover “expert knowledge.” This is the only one on the list that doesn’t use “experience” as a part of the phrase. The words “expert experience” simply don’t make sense, so we can’t use them in the same way.

“Expert knowledge” means you have a full understanding of a subject. This is very high praise, and if you refer to yourself as an “expert” in any field, you may well be asked to prove it. Only use it if you’re certain that you’re an “expert” in your understanding.

Let’s go over some examples so you can see when we might use them:

  • I have expert knowledge in dealing with young children.
  • I have expert knowledge in arts and literature and would make a great fit for the team.
  • I have an expert understanding of medicinal things, but I’m always winning to learn new methods.
  • I have expert knowledge when it comes to video games.

As you can see, the field of knowledge isn’t important. If you believe yourself to be an “expert” (which generally refers to the best of the best), then you may say that you have this.

What Does “Extensive Experience” Mean?

It’s great to know what all these synonyms mean and when to use them, but we should also quickly look at what “extensive experience” even means.

“Extensive experience” means that you’ve spent a long time learning something in a field or job. “Extensive” means “to a great extent,” which means you’ve spent a long time learning how to master certain things.

It’s one of the most popular sayings in a CV, and many employers will brush over it now because of how uninspiring it reads. That’s why it’s important to come up with a good alternative that speaks to a potential employer.

Can You Say “Extensive Experience”?

Many people worry about the correctness of “extensive experience” as a word.

“Extensive experience” is grammatically correct. “Extensive” is used as an adjective, while “experience” in this sense is used as a noun. An adjective describes a noun, meaning that both words work perfectly together.

However, it’s important to remember you can’t just say them on their own and generally need to include who has the “extensive experience” in a field.

  • I have extensive experience.
  • You have extensive experience.
  • We have extensive experience.

All of these sentences are correct; you just have to make sure you include a pronoun and an auxiliary verb (“have”) beforehand to make it flow.

How To Use Extensive Experience In A Sentence

There are a few ways you can use “extensive experience” in a sentence. It’s important to understand these examples before we throw alternatives at you. If you haven’t used or seen it before, then these are some good examples of when it’s used.

  • My job has provided me with extensive experience in the following fields.
  • My school offered an extensive work experience program that I took part in.
  • I made sure to get extensive experience in this field before I applied.
  • You can’t get a high-paying job without extensive experience in the field you’re applying to.

As you can see, the situation can vary based on what we’re talking about. We can also include extra nouns like “work” in-between “extensive” and “experience” if we need to. The meaning is always the same.

MSDS Student Experience: 2024 INFORMS Analytics Conference

Two data science students pose with their poster presentation at a conference

As our graduation day quickly approaches, it seems like a good time to take stock of our experience in the residential M.S. in Data Science program at UVA. A true highlight moment was attending the 2024 INFORMS Analytics Conference in Orlando in mid-April. For both of us, it was our first professional conference in the data science/analytics space, and it was exciting to be among thought leaders and innovators.

We first learned about INFORMS , an international association for professionals in analytics and Operations Research (O.R.), from our MSDS Residential Program Director Dr. Prince Afriyie . We were humbled to receive a nomination from him for the Early Career Professionals’ Network (ECPN) , an exclusive 1-day workshop within the conference.

ECPN is designed to help those beginning their journey in analytics/O.R. build professional networks and learn the practicalities of working in the field. During the workshop, we rotated through a number of small group coaching sessions, each led by an experienced practitioner who shared insights and perspectives on early careers and best practices. We also had a role-playing exercise, where our groups were tasked with developing a strategy to improve supply chain logistics and day-to-day operations for a hypothetical client.

Data Science students discuss their poster presentation

One of the conference highlights was being selected to present our work at the student poster competition. We shared our findings from our project, an analysis of the average annual income gap between white and minority-owned businesses in the US. We received valuable feedback from attendees and engaged in enriching conversations with other presenters. Discussing the thinking behind our process and the conclusions we drew with an engaged audience was just the motivation and assurance we needed!

The bulk of the conference consisted of speaker sessions in various tracks, led by accomplished professionals with years of experience in research and industry. The myriad topics were so intriguing that we wanted to be everywhere all at once. It was difficult to choose from the seemingly infinite sessions, so we made a pact to mostly attend different ones and exchange our new knowledge with each other afterward.

Ethan: “I may be biased, but one of my favorite sessions was on Public Affairs and Advocacy in the Analytics Landscape. In the session, we got the opportunity to discuss data analytics work that is often taking place between public sector groups (NGOs, non-profits, etc.) and all levels of government. That talk was fascinating, not just because I had the chance to learn about many tools for data advocacy available to me, but also because of the others I met in the audience. Many of us got to talking about side projects for the public good and other work we can get involved in and we created a group chat to share ideas. It was great meeting enthusiastic colleagues who are also passionate about the type of public sector work I am interested in!”

Tatev: “I attended a particularly impactful session on effective communication in the workplace that reminded me of the power of language. The open dialogue and solidarity I witnessed among the women there were nothing short of inspiring and empowering. We learned techniques for exuding confidence, making switches in our verbal and non-verbal communication, and being advocates for ourselves and others in professional settings. I was pleased to discover opportunities for further discussion and mentorship offered by the Women in OR/MS (WORMS) division of INFORMS, which I happily attended. Beyond that, I also enjoyed a talk on assessing and improving workplace conditions based on employee feedback through NLP. Many of the techniques discussed were ones I used in my capstone project, so I was eager to learn about disparate applications and pick the speakers’ brains about the technicalities of their work.”

We believe the format of the conference lent itself well to forming new connections. Each meal and coffee chat served as a built-in opportunity to meet and network with people from around the world. The denouement of the event was the Edelman Gala, where everyone came dressed to the nines to celebrate the finalists and crown the winner of the renowned Franz Edelman Award .

We both agree this trip was the cherry on top for our MSDS experience. We became fast friends with peers from top university programs, received valuable feedback and advice from the people at INFORMS, and exchanged ideas and thoughts with others along the way. We look forward to continuing our involvement with the organization, attending similar events in the future, and keeping in touch with all our new contacts. A sincere thank you to the faculty at UVA School of Data Science whose enthusiastic support and encouragement made this trip possible!

Michael Bublé and Snoop Dogg announced as new coaches on 'The Voice'

Michael Buble and Snoop Dogg

Some soul and some swagger are coming to Season 26 of “The Voice”!

Michael Bublé and rapper Snoop Dogg are joining the cast as coaches this fall, NBC announced at its upfront presentation at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on May 13.

The crooner and the rapper join returning coaches Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani to round out the  group of all-stars .

“Folks, we’ve got a rookie taking the chair. I can’t wait for him to join us — so I can beat him,” McEntire said onstage during the event. “Everyone please welcome the D-O-double-G, Snoop Dogg!”

The legendary rapper then took the stage and put a twist on the lyrics to his 1994 classic “Gin and Juice.”

“With so much drama in the LBC, it’s kinda hard being Snoop on NBC,” he rapped.

Snoop then shared his excitement about joining the group.

“Since Reba is the queen of ‘The Voice’ who brings the sparkle, I can be the king who brings the style, the funk and the fun,” he said.

He previously appeared on “The Voice” as a mega mentor in Season 20, and Bublé is also no stranger to the show. The Grammy-winning singer was an advisor to Blake Shelton’s team in Season 3.

Snoop and Bublé will replace Chance the Rapper, the country duo Dan + Shay and singer John Legend as coaches in Season 26.
