Course summary

About the course

A University of Hertfordshire research degree is an internationally recognised degree signifying high levels of achievement in research. It develops extensive subject expertise and independent research skills which are honed over an extended period, depending on the level of the award.

You would undertake a substantial, original research project for the duration of the degree, under the supervision and guidance of two or more academic members of staff. Your supervisory team provides guidance both in the selection of a research topic and in the conduct of the research. You are also supported by attendance at postgraduate seminar series to develop subject specific knowledge and research skills relevant to your field of research.

The degree is assessed solely on the basis of the final research output, in the form of a substantial written thesis which must be "defended" in a viva. During the course of the degree, you would be given opportunities to present your work at major conferences and in refereed research publications.

What’s next for my career?

  • An internationally recognised research qualification
  • Psychology ranked joint first nationally for research impact, obtaining 100% outstanding rating (Research Excellence Framework, 2021).

Personal profile

Ceri Houlbrook is a Lecturer in History and Folklore in the  History Group . Her primary research interests are the heritage and material culture of ritual and folklore in the British Isles, from c.1700 to the present day. She completed her PhD at the University of Manchester in 2014, having focused on the archaeology and heritage of the British coin-tree. She published this research in a Palgrave Macmillan monograph:   The Roots of a Ritual: The magic of coin-trees from religion to recreation.

Her interest in contemporary ritual practices extends also to love-locks, on which she has published a monograph with Berghahn: Unlocking the Love-Lock: The history and heritage of a contemporary custom

Ceri joined the University of Hertfordshire in 2015 as a Postdoctoral Researcher on the Inner Lives: Emotions, Identity and the Supernatural, 1300-1900  project, in which she worked with  Professor Owen Davies  on how anxiety and fear of the supernatural manifested itself materially in the domestic spaces of the 18 th -20 th centuries. As part of this project, Ceri was co-curator on the Spellbound exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and co-wrote Palgrave Macmillan book, with Owen Davies, Building Magic: Ritual and re-enchantment in post-medieval structures

She has also worked on the  Electric Generations Project  with Owen Davies and  Dr Ciara Meehan , curating exhibitions on people's receptions to electricity, which have been held in Dublin, Hatfield, and Manchester.

Ceri is currently a Co-Investigator on the AHRC  Bottles Concealed and Revealed Project , working on collaboration with Museum of London Archaeology to explore bottle magic and renegotiate what is understood by the term 'witch bottle'.

Ceri has co-edited a volume on  The Materiality of Magic: An artefactual investigation into ritual practices and popular beliefs , published by Oxbow, and  Magical Folk: British and Irish Fairies  with Gibson Square. She has co-edited a special issue of Material Religion on 'Cataloguing Magic in Museum Contexts', and is currently co-editing a special issue of  Peace Review Journal  on Folklore.

Ceri is the editor of  FLS News, the newsletter of the Folklore Society. She also   manages two blogs: the  Love-Lock Diaries , which explores the global phenomenon of love-locking, and the  Concealed Revealed , which focuses on hidden domestic deposits and their afterlives. She also manages the  Archaeology of Contemporary Assemblages and Deposits  (ACAD)  Facebook  group; a global network of researchers interested in modern-day ritual deposits.

Dr Tammy Kalber (Department of Imaging)

Tammy Kalber

Tammy's work centres on developing innovative imaging techniques using nanochemistry and molecular engineering to monitor cell therapies in vivo. Tammy intends to correlate quantitative delivery and localisation of cells, with the assessment of cell viability, in order to investigate the efficacy of cell therapies and predict their potential therapeutic outcomes.

This work utilises two cell labelling strategies: direct labelling and genetic reporter labelling. Nanoparticles and low molecular weight compounds are used to directly label cells with imaging agents. With genetic reporter labelling, the cells are genetically modified to express a gene that can incorporate an imaging probe into viable cells. Combining these two techniques allows cells to be tracked and assessed in vivo using a multitude of different imaging platforms (MRI, PET/SPECT/CT, optical) across scale (whole body to micrometre range).
