Sophie Ireland

Alliance Manchester Business School takes the prestigious title of the world’s best university for Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), that’s according to the CEOWORLD magazine 2022 rankings. Richard J. Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University earned itself a respectable second place, with SDA Bocconi School of Management is ranked third. The 2022 rankings placed Pepperdine Graziadio Business School in fourth ahead of Lubin School of Business at Pace University into fifth; while London Metropolitan University ranked sixth and Leeds University Business School School seventh.

Overall, among the Top 10 Universities For a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), the eighth, ninth, and tenth positions are held by Georgia State University’s Robinson College of Business, the University of Aberdeen Business School, and Creighton University – Heider College of Business.

The World's Best Universities For Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), 2022

Detailed findings & methodology: CEOWORLD magazine surveyed 150,00 business executives, graduates, global business influencers, industry professionals, business school academics, employers, and recruiters in 156 countries and territories between November 15, 2021, and February 22, 2022. Ten percent of the interviews were conducted by telephone, 82% online, and 8% by post or face-to-face. All quantitative interviews were conducted on a confidential basis, without relying on institutions’ data submissions.

To establish our list, we collected information and statistics from publicly available sources, research, and survey. Participants were asked to rate institutions on a scale of 1 “marginal” to 100 “outstanding” or “don’t know.” The 2022 Global Universities survey was carried out by the CEOWORLD magazine – the website for CEOs, COOs, CFOs, senior corporate executives, business leaders, private equity investors, investment bankers, and high net worth individuals worldwide. CEOWORLD magazine ranked 173 Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programs around the world.

The rankings are based on seven major metrics of quality and reputation. Overall Score (100%) is the sum of:

1) Academic reputation 2) Admission Eligibility 3) Job placement rate 4) Recruiter feedback 5) Specialization 6) Global reputation and influence 7) Annual tuition and fees

However, this is by no means a comprehensive list, while the institutions above are the CEOWORLD magazine’s “Best Universities For Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) 2022,” there may be many other universities that offer excellent programs. This ranking should not be viewed as the most important aspect when choosing a business school, and are merely one element to consider.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample of 150,00 respondents is plus or minus 1.2 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that as in all survey research, there are possible sources of error—such as coverage, nonresponse, and measurement error——that could affect the results.

Not all figures add up to 100% as a result of rounding percentages and excluding ‘neither/nor’ and ‘don’t know’ responses from exhibit. The base for global figures is 150,00 (global respondents) unless otherwise stated. All responses are kept confidential to allow survey participants to share their perspectives in a respectful, truthful, unbiased, and collegial setting. Master's Student: Intensive but interesting. Great people, but professor quality varied. Lectures tend to be very interesting, but are high level in some cases. Coming from an engineering background, this felt "easy", but it is a different type of learning- more focused on the concepts than proving theories and underlying complexities. TAs are great and there is a lot of effort put towards making students understand the material. Since there isn't a sink or swim culture, I think it incentivizes learning for the sake of learning rather than curving to a "B". Professors are very friendly and actually enjoy getting to know their students. ... Read 15 reviews

  • Technology & Operations Management

Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.

Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.

How do I know which program is right for me?

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. Explore more here about each program’s requirements & curriculum, read student profiles for each discipline as well as student research , and placement information.

The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

Ranking guidelines.

We selected the degree programs based on the quality of program and range of courses provided, as well as school awards, rankings, and reputation.

Our Methodology

Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.

Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools  cannot buy better rankings  at TBS.

While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.

  • Affordability
  • Online Enrollment

Data Sources

The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology

About our ranking factors.

Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.

Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.

We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.

  • Collapse All

Academics - 75%

Affordability - 15%, online enrollment - 10%.

In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.

If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through  contact page .

We thank you for your readership and trust.

What Can I Expect From an Online Doctorate in Business Administration Program?

Every online DBA program is different, offering unique courses, academic timelines, residency demands, and dissertation requirements. Though programs may differ from school to school, most online doctor of business administration programs seem to share certain key features. Students can anticipate certain foundational courses and dissertation requirements.

Curriculum for an Online Doctorate in Business Administration

  • Financial decision making: In this course, students learn how to collect and analyze financial data and use their findings to make sound financial decisions for organizations. Students also learn how to predict trends that may affect their organizations in the future.
  • Organizational development theories and trends: In this course, students learn the ins and outs of reorganizing a company. Coursework pulls from theories like organizational ecology, organizational frames, and lean operational strategy. Students learn how to assess, plan, and implement change in an organization to maximize efficiency.
  • Corporate and personal ethics: This course explores the ethical dilemmas inherent to the field of business. Students discuss how to fuse ethics into their corporate strategies, focusing on sustainable business practices, philanthropy, and personal morals. Using contemporary businesses as case studies, students learn how to enact best practices and set innovative standards for ethical business.
  • Global management: Students learn how to conduct business on a global scale. Coursework covers variables that affect foreign businesses, including cultural, political, geographic, environmental, and legal factors. Students also learn about international management, as well as international finance and accounting.
  • Research methodology and design: This course provides a foundation for students to begin their dissertation. Students learn research methodologies and apply them to research in a business setting. Students identify an area of interest, draft research questions, critique previous studies, and begin designing their own research study.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Online Doctorate in Business Administration?

Students typically earn a doctor of business administration online in three to five years, including the time required to research, write, and defend a dissertation. Programs generally require 60 credit hours of coursework. These credits include core and elective coursework, a research component, and the dissertation.

Several factors can affect how long it takes to earn a DBA degree online. Some schools will honor more transfer credits than others. Schools that accept a generous amount of transfer credits allow students to graduate earlier than they would otherwise. Schools that follow an individually paced learning format rather than a cohort learning format may also help students to graduate in less time. Individually paced learning allows students to advance through course requirements at their own speed. In cohort models, students progress through their program as a group of peers, usually taking one class at a time.

Paying for Your Online Doctorate in Business Administration

Students earning their online doctorate in business administration have many options for funding their education. Students pursuing their online DBA or online Ph.D. should fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine if they qualify for federal aid. Students should also contact representatives with their department and school to see if any funding opportunities exist. Professionals pursuing an online Ph.D. in business administration can apply for fellowships and scholarships through their school’s business department. Unfortunately, these same opportunities do not always apply for students earning their doctor of business administration online.

Employers may also assist with the cost of tuition, provided that the student plans to continue working for the company. Students should contact their employer to inquire about tuition assistance or tuition reimbursement programs. The flexible schedule of an online DBA program also allows students to continue working to fund their education. Students pursuing an online DBA can also take out loans or apply for grants from third-party organizations.

Accreditation for Online Doctorate in Business Administration Degrees

When a school is regionally or nationally accredited, it means that an accrediting agency has conducted a review and determined the school meets certain standards of educational quality. Of the two types, regional accreditation is generally considered more prestigious than national accreditation. While most schools and employers honor credits earned at a regionally accredited school, not all regionally accredited schools or employers will honor credits earned at a nationally accredited school.

When choosing an online DBA program, you should check to see that the school is accredited and determine whether this accreditation is regional or national. Common regional accrediting agencies include the Higher Learning Commission and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission is a common national accrediting agency that reviews online programs. You should also look for online DBA programs accredited by business-specific accrediting agencies like the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

Two organizations oversee accreditation: the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The ED is a government agency responsible for overseeing the quality and progress of educational programs in the U.S. CHEA is an independent organization representing more than 3,000 colleges and over 50 accrediting organizations. While neither entity grants accreditation to schools, both organizations review accrediting agencies to determine if they meet certain standards of quality. Both organizations also publish a list of accredited programs for the public’s use. To find out whether an online DBA or online Ph.D. program in business is accredited, consult the list of accredited programs on the ED and CHEA websites.

Graduate School Rankings Matter and Here’s Why

  • Share This: Share Graduate School Rankings Matter and Here’s Why on Facebook Share Graduate School Rankings Matter and Here’s Why on LinkedIn Share Graduate School Rankings Matter and Here’s Why on X

When was the last time you were excited to stay at a two-star hotel or eat at a restaurant with only one star? There is an innate reason why you were not interested in lower-ranked establishments.

It is in our nature to want the best experience and often we base that on other’s experiences. Ranking systems tap into fundamental aspects of human psychology, such as order and control, competition, social comparison, and the desire for recognition and progression ( Chun & Larrick ). Rankings and rating systems appeal to our instincts for higher social status and help us understand what to expect regarding our experience.

Graduate program rankings are pervasive and certainly not unique to business schools. Ed Slavishak , Professor of History at Susquehanna University explains how “An enormous portion of tenure-track jobs go to graduates from the top-ranked programs. Elite programs employ the faculty with whom career-conscious candidates will most want to work.”

Ranked graduate business programs with accreditation from such bodies as AACSB, ACBSP, EFMD, and AMBA often have well-respected academic reputations, world-renowned faculty, solid funding, a large and supportive alumni base, extensive employer relationships, and access to comprehensive career services. These factors enrich students’ educational experiences and support employment outcomes. According to education writer Christina Griffith , “Higher-ranked programs offer better job placement rates and higher salary ranges” for MBA candidates.

The Stakes are High.

According to Christopher Zorn , Liberal Arts Professor of Political Science and Sociology at Penn State, “You are asking people to make high stakes, low information decisions” and rankings help people feel comfortable making personal and financial investments in their professional futures.

To increase their children’s odds of getting into top-ranked universities, parents who perpetrated what is known as the Varsity Blues Scandal paid millions of dollars to a private admissions counselor ( Taylor , 2021). The impulse to maximize a child’s academic investment usually does not result in crimes, but this event demonstrates just how important getting into top-ranked universities can be for some families.

Ranking systems in practice are far from perfect. There are other challenges such as an increasing unwillingness of some universities to participate in rankings, or university administrators “massaging data” to increase their rankings and even serving prison time for submitting false data ( Drozdowski , 2022).

Colin Diver, a past president of Reed College and former University of Pennsylvania Law School dean believes rankings will endure. Diver’s book, Breaking Ranks: How the Rankings Industry Rules Higher Education and What to Do About It , explains, “As long as there’s an admissions frenzy to feed and a voracious audience of consumers eagerly awaiting each year’s freshly reshuffled list, college rankings will persist” ( Drozdowski , 2022).

The extent to which each individual uses rankings to make decisions about graduate school options will and should vary. As the founder of North Star Admissions Consulting, Karen Marks points out, “The rankings are rarely the best way to figure out where to apply, or where to matriculate ( Marks , 2023). Making the decision to attend graduate school is a substantial time commitment and financial decision. Even if you receive a scholarship, assistantship, or fellowship, you are usually spending time earning a degree rather than generating income. Full-time residential, online, part-time, and executive programs provide options to students which previous generations did not have.

Are You Considering Graduate School?

Consider investing time and effort into understanding and contributing to your field before applying to graduate school. Employment will help you better understand your career goals, develop relevant skills, improve your candidacy for top ranked programs, and allow you to identify and then fill in any knowledge gaps while you are a student. Having some full-time work experience, and knowing and understanding how you want to apply your degree within a specific function and industry, will also give you a competitive advantage when applying for scholarships, assistantships, or fellowships. Candidates with industry knowledge, demonstrated commitment, an existing professional network, and relevant skills are well positioned to make the most of a graduate program.

Rankings are valuable, but they are not intended to be a one-size-fits-all approach to selecting a graduate program. Consider your educational priorities and career goals to select the best program for you.

What’s the best MBA school? These schools produce the most Fortune 1000 c-suite executives

Map of the United States, with green circle depicting where Fortune 1000 executives received their MBA. Bigger circles means larger concentration of degrees.

There are quite literally hundreds of universities around the country that offer one of the most coveted degrees and experiences for aspiring business leaders: the master’s in business administration (MBA).

While it is true that many global business leaders, such as Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk, do not hold the degree, for many students, it is still considered a rite of passage toward leading a successful company. Popular executives like Tim Cook, Satya Nadella, and Jamie Dimon are examples of those who do have an MBA (from Duke, UChicago, and Harvard, respectively).

It may come as a shock that the latter group of leaders is actually in the minority when it comes to top business leaders with MBAs. Recent analysis by Fortune’s education team of all Fortune 1000 companies and their c-suite executives’ educational background found that only about 46% of CEOs, CFOs, and relevant technology leads ( CIO , CTO, or CISO) have the graduate management degree. But for those Fortune 1000 leaders with an MBA , Harvard Business School (HBS), University of Chicago (Booth), and Northwestern University (Kellogg) are the schools producing the most.

When it comes to chief executives in particular, Harvard is the clear leader; nearly 6% of all Fortune 1000 CEOs are alumni from HBS’s MBA program . For financial leaders, UChicago leads; about 4% of all Fortune 1000 CFOs have an MBA from the Booth School of Business .

According to Matt Weinzierl, senior associate dean and chair of the HBS MBA program, one of the reasons the school remains one of the most coveted programs is because students are always wrestling with learning through challenging real world problems, together.

“In an era of pervasive distraction, the immersive HBS case method—which has been at the heart of what we do for over a century—teaches something it’s otherwise very hard to get: what we call higher order skills,” Weinzierl tells Fortune .

Are the M7 still dominant in the business education world?

It is no question that one of the biggest factors in the MBA space is prestige. Graduating from one of the “Magnificent 7” or M7 business schools has historically brought along a sense of clout because of their notoriously rigorous curriculum, expert professors, and competitive admissions process.

These are the M7 business schools: Harvard Business School Stanford University University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) Columbia Business School Northwestern University (Kellogg) University of Chicago (Booth) MIT (Sloan)

However, an M7 doesn't always necessarily mean success: Among executives with MBAs at Fortune 1000 companies, the  University of Michigan , for example, has more alumni than two M7 schools: Stanford and MIT.

Many of the same students that apply to schools like Michigan are also applying for the traditional M7 schools, but as Sharon Matusik, dean of University of Michigan Ross School of Business says, students’ ultimate choice comes down to where they think they can best achieve their goals.

“We win some, we lose some,” she says—adding that Michigan emphasizes four key areas in its program: excellence, action, impact, and community, which touches on everything from faculty expertise and learning-by-doing to balancing economic and social impact as well as school spirit.

Michigan is just one example that counters the myth that M7 institutes are the be-all and end-all of graduate business education. In fact, of those executives with the degree, 69% of them got it at an institute other than an M7.

When looking at the top 20 programs, ranked in accordance with Fortune’s list of the best MBA programs , that number drops to 46.30%. This still means over half of the top executives at Fortune 1000 companies are MBA alumni of programs outside the 20 best.

However, there are some notable outliers, such as Washington University in St. Louis (Fortune ranked No. 39), Indian Institute of Management (unranked), Vanderbilt University (No. 26), University of Minnesota (No. 30), and Michigan State University (No. 31), all of which are in the top 20 in terms of number of MBA alumni leading a top company. On the flip side, Yale University , which is ranked No. 4 in Fortune’s ranking, is tied for having only the 43rd most MBA alumni.

Is an expensive, private school MBA worth it?

According to the U.S. Department of Education , there are slightly more public higher education programs than private nonprofit ones (1,892 versus 1,754 in 2020-2021).

However, historically, many of the schools with the highest academic prestige are private institutions. Case in point, all of the Ivy League and M7 universities are private.

But as anyone who graduates from a private school will tell you, it is not cheap—whatsoever, especially for a business management education. According to the Education Data Initiative , the average cost of an MBA is $56,850. At Harvard, the initiative predicts the entire cost of a 2-year degree program is $231,276.

Whether it be prestige, alumni networks, faculty, curriculum, or other factors to credit, private institutions do tend to produce more Fortune 1000 executives with MBAs. In fact, alumni from private schools outpace public schools by double.

This is not to say an expensive MBA is a requirement to become a business leader; the private school alumni still only make up 1 in 3 of the executives. Moreover, according to data collected by the Wall Street Journal , some of the private institutions, like Harvard, Stanford, and MIT are seeing a growing number of job-seeking graduates who are unable to find roles directly after their program.

What region dominates business school education?

Along with the university itself, one major factor of consideration when picking an MBA program is location. For current Fortune 1000 executives with the degree, an overwhelming majority of them decided to learn on the East Coast.

Boston, Chicago, and New York are three areas with a large concentration of successful students, which makes sense considering the locations are home to multiple top institutions. However, in many parts of the country, there is clearly a business school education drought. While cities like Austin, St. Louis, and Minneapolis are hubs for business students, cities like Denver, Seattle, and Miami are lacking.

What makes a business school great?

Ultimately, many business school programs have similar offerings: an innovative curriculum, top-notch faculty, immersive learning opportunities, network building, lifelong connections. But, for students, what truly can make their education more impactful than the next is how much effort they put into their learning experience.

"We talk a lot about what it takes to convert potential into impact, and the short version is ' hard work, with humility, for humanity .' Knowing that you always have more to learn and being willing to put in the work to learn it—especially by listening to others—is at the core of what we do at HBS to help our students achieve their goals and make a difference in the world," explains Weinzierl.

An MBA experience is all about which classes you spend a little extra time studying for, who you seek out to build connections with, and the ideas you take away and apply to your future goals. By and large, Fortune 1000 executives do not become leaders overnight nor do they just get their role handed to them on a silver platter. Hard work pays off.

Thousands of successful business leaders carve their own journeys in the business world. The data speaks for itself. While it may feel like otherwise, obtaining an MBA from an M7 school is the path taken by a relatively low percentage.

The age-old question: Is an MBA worth it?

The short answer is that it all depends on what you want to do and what your goals are. Many executives will tell you that while a graduate-level business education certainly may have helped get them to their current role—it definitely was not the sole reason. However, the universities, at least for one, hope that an MBA will be part of your experience—not only to help you understand and solve some of the most pressing challenges of today, but also so you can later come back and teach the next generation of students the lessons you learned along the way.

“At the end, for prospective students who are looking to make an impact, business, I think, is a really powerful tool that maybe is not obvious to everyone. So hopefully, they'll consider business education in the future,” Matusik says.

When applying, it's important tailor your application to each school and have well-developed goal statement that plots the intended career path, experts say.

Nikita Srivastava applied to seven MBA programs and got admitted to three: Yale University School of Management in Connecticut, New York University's Stern School of Business and the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business in Illinois.

“I definitely was not expecting it,” says Srivastava, who chose Booth.

She attributes her multiple acceptances to top B-schools to tying her personal and professional backgrounds to her post-MBA goals. Her background was mainly in communications, media relations and public relations, and she credits her MBA admissions consultant for showing her how to tell her story.

“Lean into what makes you unique," Srivastava advises MBA applicants .  " Think about how this unique quality will enhance the classroom for your peers and professors. Be proud of it and own it.”

Being accepted into multiple B-schools can allow an applicant to weigh program fit, potential opportunities and scholarship offers. Here are some things to consider to increase your chances of being accepted to multiple top business schools .

Apply More Broadly

Getting admitted to numerous MBA programs is a numbers game, says Sam Weeks, an MBA admissions consultant and founder of Sam Weeks Consulting.

“The more business schools a prospective applicant applies to, the more likely they are to be accepted into more than one school. That’s why we recommend to our clients to apply to at least six schools, if possible,” says Weeks, who has an MBA from the University of Oxford in England.

Students should not only apply to more schools to increase their chances of multiple admissions, but also more broadly in terms of school selectivity, experts say.

“This sounds obvious, but there are many applicants who go into this process only considering a limited set of schools with slimmer acceptance odds. They say the ROI is not there for other schools outside their ambitious targeting,” says Alex Leventhal, an MBA admissions consultant at Prep MBA Admissions Consulting.

Leventhal, who has an MBA from Harvard University Business School in Massachusetts, contends that the return on investment is compelling at more schools than most people think. He says applicants should look at the salary data of program graduates and the percentage of graduates who got jobs within three months after graduation.

“For example, the very top consulting firms recruit at a range of schools, and not just the top three,” Leventhal says.

He also suggests looking for joint degree programs to increase your odds by applying to a specialty track that a school is promoting or trying to fill.

Leventhal said he has had "some less-than-stellar clients" get accepted to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School , likely because they applied to the Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies joint program "for one of their less popular regional tracks. Or a client who got into Stanford Graduate School of Business because their professional experiences fit so nicely with a limited scholarship program focusing on the sustainable food supply chain.”

Customize Each Application

Schools like to see B-school applicants demonstrate familiarity with their programs, experts say. Leventhal says schools will “look for evidence that you have engaged with their program and talked to current students and alumni.”

Applicants should demonstrate they took the time to research a particular school “and all it has to offer, and consider both what they will learn from the program and how they will add value on campus,” says MBA consultant Scott Edinburgh, founder of Personal MBA Coach.

This means taking time to develop a strong personal story that connects past choices with future goals, says Edinburgh, who has an MBA from Wharton.

Applicants should demonstrate four key things in their tailored applications, he says: “Ability to handle the academic rigor of the target MBA program, leadership potential, how they will uniquely add value on campus and clarity of purpose.”

When applying, Weeks says, it’s important to have a well-developed goal statement that “charts out the applicant's intended career path and the impact they expect to have in their career.” He says those goals should be ambitious but attainable and make sense for the applicant.

Knowing what makes top business schools distinct "and then showing how you fit into those unique scenarios is essential to securing admits,” says Candy Lee LaBalle, an MBA admissions expert and founder of mbaClarity, formerly LaBalle Admissions.

Highlight Extracurricular Activities

Professional accomplishments that demonstrate leadership are great but shouldn’t be the only things highlighted. Edinburgh says applicants should show a passion for driving change.

“Successful MBA applicants are interesting people with plans to leave the world better than they found it in unique ways. Demonstrating passion and a track record of success in working towards this passion goes a long way,” Edinburgh says.

LaBalle says applicants who get admitted to multiple top B-schools tend to be “genuinely curious about the world, about learning, about having their perspectives challenged, and that shows in their hobbies and interests, work and goals.” They care deeply about the world and can demonstrate it, she adds, “whether that is mentoring classmates or starting an NGO that feeds thousands, and everything in between.”

Boost Your GMAT or GRE Score

If your GMAT or GRE score is lower than you had hoped for, take some more time to study and retake the exam.

“It is easier to get admits, and thus multiple admits, if your test score is strong and balanced between quantitative and verbal,” LaBalle says.

She says a strong, above-average test score can make a difference. “While there are many ways to offset a lowish test, the hard truth is that the higher your score, the better your odds of multiple admits.”

Students who don’t do well in the quantitative or analytical parts of the GMAT may prefer to take the GRE. Some business schools accept either test for MBA admissions.

Tests and other application materials aside, experts say securing strong letters of recommendation by supporters invested in your career and future is important to getting accepted to top MBA programs.

Apply to Schools Offering Scholarships

Applying to more schools can mean more scholarships that come with those admissions, which can give you options. Leventhal says his clients have focused on applying to more B-schools the last few cycles because they are increasingly interested in merit scholarships.

“The schools are trying to secure talented applicants with money off the tuition. As the price tag of the MBA has gone up, the merit pull can understandably matter. And schools that are reaches for an applicant generally won’t offer much in the way of merit grants,” Leventhal says.

Srivastava says she received some scholarships with each admissions offer, helping to relieve the burden of paying back student loans after graduation and giving her “freedom to focus on finding a career that would be a good fit for me both personally and professionally.”

A major bonus to getting accepted to multiple B-schools that offer scholarships is leverage, Weeks says. “You are in a strong position to negotiate scholarships.”

That includes awards at the most elite business schools. Students with more than one acceptance can inform schools that they received another offer and ask if any additional scholarship funding is available, he says.

Southern Miss MBA Program jumps in Fortune Education Rankings

Fri, 05/17/2024 - 12:00pm | By: Courtney Robinson

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Master of Business Administration program (MBA) program has been ranked No. 31 nationally in the Best Online MBA programs for 2024 by Fortune Education. The current ranking represents a gain of 17 spots from its 2023 rankings.

Housed in the College of Business and Economic Development the program has restructured its curriculum in the last academic year by removing prerequisites barriers and allowing students more flexibility in their elective course selection.

Noted Dr. Bret Becton, Dean of the College of Business and Economic Development, “As the Dean of the College of Business & Economic Development, I am thrilled by our recognition as the No. 31 Best Online MBA Program by Fortune Education.”

Fortune Education ranks programs based on several factors, including price, student backgrounds, and alumni outcome. Other data factored into the decision include graduation rates, retention rates, yield rates, and average undergraduate GPA.

Dr. Steven Stelk, MBA Director, added, “ Fortune’s recognition of our MBA program is gratifying. The College of Business and Economic Development faculty and staff have continued to invest in and refine the online MBA program since it was established in 2014.”

Becton added, “ This achievement stands as a testament to the dedication and expertise of our MBA faculty and staff, whose tireless efforts have played an integral role in shaping our program into one that empowers future business leaders for success in today’s dynamic world.”

Stelk credits much of the improvement to the new curricular structure, which has attracted students with more diverse academic backgrounds.

“The recent rankings are based on the previous academic year, which gives us an opportunity to celebrate the results of our investments and provides fresh motivation to continue refining the program. We implemented novel curriculum changes in Fall 2023,” Stelk stated. “MBA students are now required to take fifteen hours of core business courses in accounting, finance, marketing, management, and strategy. They use the remaining 15 hours of focused electives to develop an area of expertise.”

Available focus areas include management, economic development, sport security management, supply chain/logistics, human capital development, instructional technology, public health, communications/public relations, non-profit studies, and public history. The MBA also now collaborates with the Sport Management MS and Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) programs to support dual programs.

“We are continuing to develop and test new ideas to increase the value of our MBA, and I am excited to see what the future holds,” Stelk said.

Students can complete the degree fully online or in-person at the Hattiesburg campus in as little as one year, full-time. Additional information can be found   online . For inquiries about the MBA program, please contact (601) 266-266-4659.
