Negative Effects of Science and Technology

Negative effects of scientific and technological advancement.

Advancements in science and technology have brought many benefits to society. Advancements in medical research have caused doctors to come up with cures for deadly diseases. In the 18 th century, doctors were able to come up with a treatment for smallpox (Byrum 59).

It helped to save many people who could have died due to the smallpox epidemic. The invention of computers also helped to simplify many tasks in society. Financial analysts are able to make financial predictions using simulation software. Despite the many advantages of science and technology in society, these advancements have brought negative effects to society. Scientists have used the advancements in science and technology to manufacture military weapons. Some of the chemical weapons used during wars have caused many innocent people to lose their lives (Vonnegut 64).

Science and technology have had negative effects on society since harmful weapons were produced during World War and World War II. They are also used in human experimentation, and harmful effects were caused due to the use of computers.

Essay about the Harmful Effect of Science on Society and Human Life

Military scientists have utilized advancements in science and technology to make war equipment. During World War I, scientists who had the most advanced war equipment were politically stronger compared to their enemies. Machine guns were introduced during World War I. They had the ability to kill very many people on the battlefield.

The United States was among the first countries to use machine guns in battle. These guns were driven by gas, and they had the ability to fire hundreds of rounds per minute. In addition, military scientists were able to make airplanes that could be used in battle. Examples of these aircraft included bombers, long-range bombers, and fighters (Ross 61).

Military forces started using aircraft since they knew that they could conduct surprise attacks on enemy territories. Britain was among the first countries to use aircraft to conduct attacks during battle. A British company known as Avro produced the 504 in 1914. A pilot called Lieutenant V. Waterfall flew this airplane. As World War I progressed, scientists from both Britain and Germany produced sophisticated airplanes that were to be used in bombing their enemies.

According to Ross (81), “Germany produced the Gotha bomber, while Britain produced the Handley Page bomber.” These aircraft were more accurate compared to the previous aircraft produced by military scientists. In addition, they carried bombs that caused massive damage when dropped to the ground.

Negative Effects of Producing the War Equipment

The war equipment that military scientists produced had several negative effects on society. Many soldiers lost their lives during this war. In addition, some of them sustained serious injuries after being attacked by tanks. Statistics from World War I revealed that around 117 465 casualties were reported (Ross 107). Some soldiers who returned from this war developed posttraumatic stress disorder.

Some of them started having nightmares and sleepless nights after remembering how their fellow soldiers died during the battle. Most of the men in America were required to leave their families so that they could go and fight for their countries. It forced the women in these families to look for work in factories so that they could sustain their families.

In some instances, wives became widows after their husbands died during World War I. World War I also affected the education system in most countries that were affected by this war. Some of the schools were bombed by aircraft during the war. This forced students to miss classes since they feared that they would lose their lives.

Kennedy (75) argues, “Public schools also started focusing on patriotism and nationalism instead of instilling knowledge into students.” The above negative effects of World War I were caused due to advancements in science and technology, especially in the building of weapons. These advancements helped countries to build weapons of war, such as machine guns and aircraft.

Adverse Effects of Science and Technology

Science and technology have had harmful effects on society since it was used to manufacture war equipment during World War II. Nazi scientists invented RocketV-1, a buzz bomb, during World War II. This aircraft was categorized as a guided missile, and the Nazis mainly used it in 1944-1945 (Ross 81). This aircraft could be fired from ground sites located in the Netherlands to London.

The Germans also succeeded in manufacturing V-2. It was also known as the ballistic missile, and it had the ability to first fly into space and then land on its target. This plane was sent to London during the 1944-1945 war, and it killed many innocent civilians. Senker (71) states, “Science and technology also helped the Nazi soldiers to develop a nuclear power program, known as the Nazi Nuclear Program.”

Nuclear projects in Germany began after it invaded Poland in 1939. This was after two chemists in this country, Fritz Strassmann and Otto Hahn, discovered how to produce barium (Bishop 93). The army officials in this country started investigating how nuclear energy could be used to produce lethal weapons that could be used in wars. Before the end of the Second World War, Nazi soldiers had succeeded in developing a nuclear reactor. They believed that they could use this reactor to produce the first nuclear bomb with which they can attack countries such as England and France.

It is also during World War II that the Manhattan Project was established. The United States of America started this project in conjunction with Canada and the United Kingdom. This project is famous for producing the first atomic bomb. It had about forty laboratories experimenting on how nuclear fission could be used to produce energy. The first test bomb that was produced by this project was known as Fat Boy.

On August 6, 1945, an American Aircraft known as a B-29 bomber released the first atomic bomb. This bomb was known as Little Boy. It was detonated in Hiroshima, and its explosion caused about 66,000 deaths (Bishop 131). This bomb was about 9000 pounds in weight.

After America released Little Boy, it released a second bomb that was known as Fat Man to Nagasaki. This atomic bomb weighed about 10,000 pounds and it almost destroyed the whole city of Nagasaki. In the book Cat’s Cradle written by Kurt Vonnegut, the author writes about the things American people did during the Hiroshima bombing. Vonnegut (75), “Some of the engineers who participated in the manufacture of the atomic bomb were not proud of the harmful effects that this nuclear weapon brought to the society. During World War II, Germany also invented a submarine that is used to spy on its foreign enemies. It used the information that was collected by the submarines to conduct surprise attacks against its enemies.

Influence of Science and Technology on Economy and Politics

The science and technology that was used in World War II had several negative effects on society. The economy of Japan deteriorated. This is because the atomic bomb destroyed its infrastructure. World War II also affected the Soviet Union. About 40 million people lost their lives due to this war (Bishop 71). Germany used its advanced weapons to kill civilians in the Soviet Union. In addition, they captured some of the civilians in this country and put them in concentration camps. Some of the citizens of the Soviet Union died because of poor hygiene while they lived in these camps.

The relationship between Germany and France also became poor Germany invaded France. Germany expelled the French people living within their borders. Due to this, the United States stated that it would not offer Germany any financial support for rebuilding its economy. International trade between Germany and other countries also became poor. The economic growth of Germany became slow because of this. Many people also became homeless due to the effects of World War II (Senker 82).

People were forced to escape from their countries in an attempt to avoid conflicts. Some of the German soldiers also burnt down the houses of Polish citizens, thus forcing them to become refugees. England was also affected by the bombings that it received from Germany. Businesses in London were destroyed, and this affected the economic growth of England.

The United States was forced to provide financial assistance to England in an attempt to revive its economic growth. The above negative effects of World War II were attributed to major advancements in science and technology. It proves that science and technology can have negative effects on society.

Negative Impact of Science and Technology on Human Life

Scientists also use advancements in science and technology to conduct human experimentation. Such experiments are harmful to human beings since they may have negative effects on the growth and development of people under study. One of the famous human experimentations was known as the monster study (McCuen 64). Wendell Johnson of the University of Iowa conducted this experiment on 22 orphan children. Wendell placed these children into experimentation groups and gave them speech therapy.

Half of the children under study were given positive speech therapy, while the other half were given negative speech therapy. Most of the children who received negative speech therapy developed psychological problems. Their self-esteem was also lowered, and some of them developed speech problems as they grew up (McCuen 124).

The Nazis also used advancements in science and technology to conduct human experiments. One of the experiments that they conducted on human beings was the twins’ experiment. The leader of this experiment was known as Joseph Mengele. He conducted experiments on about 1500 sets of twins. The main aim of the experiment was to establish the differences that occur in twins considering their eugenics and genetics. In addition, these experiments wanted to find out whether the body of human beings could be altered to make superior beings.

However, most of the twins died during this study. The scientists injected lethal chemicals into their bodies to see whether it would help them change their race. Human experimentation is also shown in the book Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley. Henry Foster, the director of Central London Hatching, shows the students touring this facility how human embryos are produced. He later takes the students to a nursery where infants are reprogrammed to make them hate books (Huxley 18). This is because the scientists in this institution wanted to train the infants on the methods that they could use to become successful soldiers.

Human experimentation has brought negative effects to society. Participants in human experimentation do not interact with other people in society. This affects their social life since they may not get the social skills that they require to interact with other people. In addition, some of the participants in these experiments may die. The experiment may not be safe, and this may affect their anatomy (Byrum 52).

Human experimentation is also unethical since it treats human beings as objects. Some of these experiments use infants as subjects of the study. The infants are not asked whether they agree to participate in an experiment since they may be too young to understand the concept that is being tested under experimentation (McCuen 157). In some instances, the researcher and the participants in an experiment may have a conflict of interest. Conflicts of interest may make the scientists fail to yield good results from the experiment being conducted.

Negative Aspects of the Invention of Computers and the Internet

Advancements in technology led to the invention of computers. Computers bring many benefits to society, for example, creating job opportunities for computer programmers. However, computers have also brought negative effects to society. Morley (43) claims, “Computers have affected the social interaction of young people.

Young people prefer to communicate through messages and social media sites instead of face-to-face communication. Families no longer hold family dinners together since children would rather spend their time chatting with their friends on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter (McClellan and Dorn 62).

The Internet helps to facilitate computer communication. However, the Internet has brought many negative effects on society. One of these effects is the promotion of pornography. Workers spend their time viewing pornographic images over the Internet instead of doing the tasks of their organization. Pornography encourages teenagers to engage in premarital sex. This may expose teenagers to the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases or becoming pregnant. Pornography also promotes child trafficking since some children are kidnapped and forced to act in a pornographic movie (Morley 53).

The Internet also encourages the spread of piracy. Internet sites such as Pirate Bay offer music and movies for free. This has affected the music industry since musicians are not able to recover the amount of money that they use to produce particular music. The overuse of computers may also expose users to the risk of developing a computer addiction. A person who is a computer addict spends most of his/her time on the computer and forgets about his/her social life.

There are many cases when romantic relationships have gone wrong since one of the parties ignores the other party because of spending a lot of time on computers. People who spend a lot of time on computers may end up developing back pains. In addition, such people may have long-term sleep deprivation due to spending a lot of time on computers.

Medical experts have also warned that computers may affect children as they grow up. Children may develop visual problems if they spend most of their time playing computer games. They may also develop blurred vision. Psychologists also argue that exposure to computer games to children may make them violent in the future. Some computer games encourage solving disputes with the use of violence (McClellan 112). In addition, some computer games encourage the use of slang during normal communication.

Ecological Disruptions

The unintended ecological impacts of scientific advancements have often been as profound as they are unforeseen. Efforts to enhance agricultural productivity, control pest populations, or manage natural resources have sometimes led to ecological imbalances, disrupting ecosystems at fundamental levels. For instance, the introduction of non-native species for pest control has frequently resulted in invasive outbreaks that threaten indigenous flora and fauna, undermining biodiversity. Bioengineering, while holding the promise of solving critical agricultural and environmental challenges, has occasionally led to unexpected consequences, such as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) escaping into the wild, potentially leading to crossbreeding and the creation of hard-to-control superweeds.

These ecological disruptions underscore the complexity of natural systems and the risks associated with interventions that do not fully account for this complexity. They highlight the critical need for comprehensive environmental impact assessments before the implementation of such technologies and the importance of adopting a precautionary approach to environmental management.

Medical Anomalies

The realm of medical science, despite its life-saving advancements, is not without its share of anomalies and peculiar side effects. The development of new drugs and treatments, while often beneficial, has occasionally resulted in unexpected outcomes that perplex and sometimes alarm both the medical community and patients. For example, certain medications intended to treat physical ailments have led to psychological effects, including changes in personality or the onset of symptoms akin to those of mental health disorders. Moreover, treatments that manipulate the body’s biological processes can sometimes trigger bizarre physical reactions, such as drugs that alter patients’ sensory perceptions or induce unusual physical conditions.

These medical anomalies serve as a reminder of the inherent uncertainties in the science of healing. They emphasize the need for rigorous clinical trials and post-market surveillance to detect and mitigate such unexpected outcomes. Furthermore, these cases highlight the importance of informed consent, where patients are made aware of all potential risks and side effects, no matter how rare or strange.

AI and Automation Quirks

The advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and automation have introduced a new set of quirks and unintended behaviors in technological systems. As AI systems become more complex, their ability to learn and adapt can lead to unexpected outcomes. For instance, AI algorithms have developed their own unintelligible languages or solved problems in ways that are bizarre or unforeseen by their creators. Similarly, autonomous vehicles and robots, while designed to perform tasks with precision, have made glaring errors due to oversights in their programming or unexpected interactions with their environments.

These quirks not only provide amusing anecdotes but also raise serious questions about the predictability and control of AI systems. They underscore the challenges in creating machines that can accurately interpret and respond to the complexities of the real world. As AI continues to evolve, ensuring these systems are safe, reliable, and aligned with human values becomes increasingly important. This requires ongoing research, robust testing environments, and ethical guidelines to govern AI development and deployment.

Science and Technology Essay Conclusion

To conclude, science and technology have had negative effects on society since they contributed to the production of harmful weapons during World War I. During this war, military scientists were able to produce machine guns that had the capability of shooting many rounds per minute.

In addition, war aircraft were produced during this period. World War I led to the death of many innocent civilians. In addition, the American education system was affected since students and teachers did not attend school during this war. Scientists produced atomic bombs during World War II.

In America, the Manhattan Project was started to produce atomic bombs that would make America a superpower. Fat Man and Little Boy were produced during the Manhattan Project, and they were used to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The economy of Japan deteriorated because of these attacks. Scientists have also used science and technology to conduct human experimentation. Such experiments have caused the deaths of many innocent people. Computers have also brought harm to society since they expose computer users to the risk of addiction.

What Makes Technology Good or Bad for Us?

Everyone’s worried about smartphones. Headlines like “ Have smartphones destroyed a generation? ” and “ Smartphone addiction could be changing your brain ” paint a bleak picture of our smartphone addiction and its long-term consequences. This isn’t a new lament—public opinion at the advent of the newspaper worried that people would forego the stimulating pleasures of early-morning conversation in favor of reading the daily .

Is the story of technology really that bad? Certainly there’s some reason to worry. Smartphone use has been linked to serious issues, such as dwindling attention spans , crippling depression , and even increased incidence of brain cancer . Ultimately, though, the same concern comes up again and again: Smartphones can’t be good for us, because they’re replacing the real human connection of the good old days.

Everyone’s heard how today’s teens just sit together in a room, texting, instead of actually talking to each other. But could those teenagers actually be getting something meaningful and real out of all that texting?

The science of connection

negative effects of science and technology essay

A quick glance at the research on technology-mediated interaction reveals an ambivalent literature. Some studies show that time spent socializing online can decrease loneliness , increase well-being , and help the socially anxious learn how to connect to others. Other studies suggest that time spent socializing online can cause loneliness , decrease well-being , and foster a crippling dependence on technology-mediated interaction to the point that users prefer it to face-to-face conversation.

It’s tempting to say that some of these studies must be right and others wrong, but the body of evidence on both sides is a little too robust to be swept under the rug. Instead, the impact of social technology is more complicated. Sometimes, superficially similar behaviors have fundamentally different consequences. Sometimes online socialization is good for you, sometimes it’s bad, and the devil is entirely in the details.

This isn’t a novel proposition; after all, conflicting results started appearing within the first few studies into the internet’s social implications, back in the 1990s. Many people have suggested that to understand the consequences of online socialization, we need to dig deeper into situational factors and circumstances. But what we still have to do is move beyond recognition of the problem to provide an answer: When, how, and why are some online interactions great, while others are dangerous?

The interpersonal connection behaviors framework

As a scientist of close relationships, I can’t help but see online interactions differently from thinkers in other fields. People build relationships by demonstrating their understanding of each other’s needs and perspectives, a cyclical process that brings them closer together. If I tell you my secrets, and you respond supportively, I’m much more likely to confide in you again—and you, in turn, are much more likely to confide in me.

This means that every time two people talk to each other, an opportunity for relationship growth is unfolding. Many times, that opportunity isn’t taken; we aren’t about to have an in-depth conversation with the barista who asks for our order. But connection is always theoretically possible, and that’s true whether we’re interacting online or face-to-face.

Close relationships are the bread and butter of happiness—and even health. Being socially isolated is a stronger predictor of mortality than is smoking multiple cigarettes a day . If we want to understand the role technology plays in our well-being, we need to start with the role it plays in our relationships.

And it turns out that the kind of technology-mediated interactions that lead to positive outcomes are exactly those that are likely to build stronger relationships. Spending your time online by scheduling interactions with people you see day in and day out seems to pay dividends in increased social integration . Using the internet to compensate for being lonely just makes you lonelier; using the internet to actively seek out connection has the opposite effect .

“The kind of technology-mediated interactions that lead to positive outcomes are exactly those that are likely to build stronger relationships”

On the other hand, technology-mediated interactions that don’t really address our close relationships don’t seem to do us any good—and might, in fact, do us harm. Passively scrolling through your Facebook feed without interacting with people has been linked to decreased well-being and increased depression post-Facebook use.

That kind of passive usage is a good example of “ social snacking .” Like eating junk food, social snacking can temporarily satisfy you, but it’s lacking in nutritional content. Looking at your friends’ posts without ever responding might make you feel more connected to them, but it doesn’t build intimacy.

Passive engagement has a second downside, as well: social comparison . When we compare our messy lived experiences to others’ curated self-presentations, we are likely to suffer from lowered self-esteem , happiness, and well-being. This effect is only exacerbated when we consume people’s digital lives without interacting with them, making it all too easy to miss the less photogenic moments of their lives.

Moving forward

The interpersonal connection behaviors framework doesn’t explain everything that might influence our well-being after spending time on social media. The internet poses plenty of other dangers—for two examples, the sense of wasting time or emotional contagion from negative news. However, a focus on meaningful social interaction can help explain decades of contradictory findings. And even if the framework itself is challenged by future work, its central concept is bound to be upheld: We have to study the details of how people are spending their time online if we want to understand its likely effects.

In the meantime, this framework has some practical implications for those worried about their own online time. If you make sure you’re using social media for genuinely social purposes, with conscious thought about how it can improve your life and your relationships, you’ll be far more likely to enjoy your digital existence.

The Positive and Negative Effects of Technology on Your Life

As a society, we've come a long way with the help of technology. But is it all rainbows and sunshine? Or does technology have its downsides?

Technology is around us everywhere, from simple devices like our smartphones, laptop, and TV to background tech that we don't even notice. It isn't going anywhere anytime soon, meaning we have to get accustomed to it. Once we get the hang of using tech the right way, it can improve our lives.

On the other hand, tech can also make our lives harder. Whether tech has a positive or negative effect on our lives, it all depends on how we use it. So, let's look at some of the positive and negative aspects of technology in our lives, shall we?

Positives of Technology in Our Lives

Technology has, without a doubt, made all our lives easier over the past two decades. From connecting with people across the globe from the comfort of your home to running a full-fledged business without a physical space, technology has impacted our lives positively in several ways. So, read on below:

1. Technology Boosts Business

Many new tech advancements and innovations are made by and for businesses. Why? Because companies are always looking to upgrade their products and services for profit.

New technology continues to come out faster than we can keep up with. The purpose is to boost business and make the daily management of enterprises more systematic, structured, and successful.

Tech has boosted businesses by improving the hiring process, error-free collection and analysis of business data, and better communication with clients and partners.

Additionally, tech has also changed the way we work remotely for the better. It is now commonplace for people to work from home. However, certain tech, like the cloud, has made it easier than ever to work whether you're at the office or not.

What's more, tech has made it effortless to communicate remotely too. Businesses now typically use tools like Slack and Zoom on a regular basis.

2. Technology Makes Shopping Online Possible

Advancements in tech have made it easier for more people to access the internet, resulting in online shopping being more popular now than ever.

Currently, most people prefer to shop online without leaving the house because of its sheer convenience. Instead of wasting hours in the shopping mall, tech makes shopping simple.

A few of the benefits of online shopping include cheaper products, saved time, fuel, and energy, easier-to-find items, a wider variety online, and no added pressure.

Amazon is a great website to do basically all of your online shopping. It's one of the most popular online shopping platforms because you can practically find everything you're looking for, from groceries to clothing.

Generous discounts, cheap shipping, and a massive selection of products are just some of the other excellent benefits of shopping online using Amazon. What's more, there is an Amazon Shopping mobile app that you can download and use for free. If Amazon isn't available to you there are plenty of alternatives to Amazon for your online shopping .

3. Technology Has Advanced Education

One of the most downplayed areas of technology that has dramatically improved over the past few years is education. Technology has definitely been beneficial for those in the business world, but it has impacted education in a big way.

A few examples include the availability of online courses, accessibility of web seminars, and unlimited online resources for research. Before tech, you'd have to physically go to class, attend a meeting or go to the library to do research.

Now, education is easier for everyone, no matter where you live. Online classes have made it possible for all students to enroll without leaving their homes.

Today, you can find several great sites for free college courses online , such as Udemy—a fantastic website that offers thousands of free and paid-for courses to choose from. Whether you want to create virtual reality games or become a yoga instructor, Udemy has a course that's perfect for you.

In terms of technology, Udemy also offers a wide variety of great tech-related online courses. The categories available range from IT hardware and software to operating systems and network and security. So tech can help you master your chosen path and possibly broaden your career opportunities.

4. Technology Makes Everyday Life Better

Most technology these days is created to improve businesses and generate profit. However, tech can also make our daily lives so much better.

Tech has made an immensely positive impact on the daily lives of everyday people. Some positive examples include improvements in the transportation system.

The Bullet Train is an amazing piece of tech that can travel six times faster than a regular train. Think about the introduction of self-driving cars, too: they were unheard of a few years ago, and now they're a reality.

A fair amount of people drive Teslas, and they are well-known for having state-of-the-art self-driving capabilities. Some other companies that support autonomous driving capabilities besides Tesla are Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.

Besides transportation, technology has also had a positive influence on household items. For example, smart homes are now commonplace. Smart hubs allow households to connect their devices and appliances, making life a lot easier.

Negatives of Technology in Our Lives

As much as we appreciate technology for the convenience it brought to our lives, several aspects of it have impacted our society negatively in more ways than one.

1. Technology Causes Health Problems

As technology advances, we are connected now more than ever, and it has become a huge part of our lives. That's why it's possible for technology to impact our physical health negatively.

These physical health problems can be severe. Nevertheless, you can avoid most of them by creating healthy tech habits instead of bad ones.

Apart from creating unhealthy sleeping patterns, electronic devices can cause digital eye strain, poor posture, and increased inactivity, leading to health problems like obesity.

Taking regular breaks from these devices can help you avoid these health problems. You can find a range of apps that remind you to take frequent breaks.

One popular app to use is called Focus Keeper. This app will help you reduce your digital eye strain, take regular breaks, and prevent tech burnout.

Using the Focus Keeper app is easy. All you have to do is pick the time you want to focus on something and hit the play button to start the session. When the session is over there is a quick break and then the next session begins.

In addition, you can customize the settings under Options to change the sessions per round, daily focus goal, and timer sounds.

2. Technology Creates Job Insecurity

Job loss and downsizing are two significant adverse effects of technology. Because of advances in the tech field such as AI integration, automating and accomplishing tasks have become easy.

In this day and age, most companies need to stay up to date with the latest technology, but in the process, low-skilled employees, like factory workers and cashiers, will be replaced.

Machines can now carry out tasks that only humans could do so far, which creates a massive shortage of jobs. The bottom line is that people aren't necessarily needed for work tasks anymore because of how efficient tech has become.

3. Tech Products Lack Longevity

Technology grows incredibly quickly, so the digital devices and gadgets that we use have a short lifespan and become outdated in a matter of months.

Since these devices are so important in our daily lives, we need to maintain and upgrade them regularly. Besides maintenance and upgrades, these pieces of tech may just become outdated and pushed aside by newer, more advanced versions.

Tech products lack longevity, so they can be costly and lead to unnecessary e-waste. Instead of throwing your older devices away or tossing them in the cupboard, use a website like Decluttr . This site makes it easy to buy and sell your used tech online.

You can sell your old tech on the Decluttr website, whether you want to get rid of your outdated phone, wearable, or console.

When you've found the correct category and product, tap Sell Now and the website gives you an instant price based on its carrier and condition. Moreover, Decluttr is also available as a free iOS or Android app to help you declutter your life .

4. Technology Spawns Misinformation and Fake News

The spread of misinformation and fake news online is nothing new. In fact, it has been going on for many years. However, with all the developments that happen so frequently in technology, it has become harder to define what's true and what's not.

Since so many people cannot tell what information is factual and what isn't, it creates a lot of skepticism and misunderstanding about important topics. This can be especially harmful when it comes to political issues and trusting the media.

One example of how tech advancements are negatively affecting us is the use of deepfakes. Several negative deepfake incidents have surfaced, and it's getting harder and harder to spot them.

These incidents can warn us about the possible risk of tech in the future. If you're finding it difficult to spot fake news and misinformation , an online platform like Credder is a great tool to use.

Credder will help you avoid fake news and misinformation because it only follows news and information provided by trustworthy sources.

Technology Is a Boon and Bane to Society

Overall, tech is amazing, and it has changed the world for the better, from improving our daily lives to building better businesses. The majority of the adverse effects of technology stem from its misuse.

The way we choose to utilize tech can help or harm ourselves and others. Instead of blaming the tool, we need to use technology in a healthy, more disciplined way. By doing this, technology can continue to benefit our lives.

negative effects of science and technology essay

Two-thirds of U.S. adults (67%) say science has had mostly positive effects on society, while 27% say there have been roughly equal positive and negative effects and just 4% say the effects have been largely negative. This finding is in line with a 2014 Pew Research Center study and others showing generally positive views about the effect of science on society.

Overall, views about the effects of technology are also largely positive, if a bit less so in comparison with science. About half of adults (52%) say technology has had mostly positive effects, compared with 38% who say there have been an equal mix of positive and negative effects of technology. Just 8% say technology has had mostly negative effects.

The survey asked an open-ended question to give respondents a chance to explain, in their own words, why they feel the way they do about science’s effect on society. Some 67% of Americans say science has had a mostly positive effect on society; the most common reasons cited are related to medicine and health (59% of this group), including improvements in medical research, quality and longevity of life, and treatment of disease.

Other ways science is seen to benefit society include overall knowledge and reasoning skills (19%), technology improvements (15%) and environmental benefits and awareness about environmental issues (14%).

Just 4% of adults say the effect of science has been primarily negative. This group of 60 survey respondents is not large enough to analyze separately.

Overall, 52% of U.S. adults say the effect of technology has been largely positive. Within this group, 57% cite the vast network of information and communication that is available, easily accessed and shared across the world as a benefit for society. Another 21% see improvements to health, medicine and medical research as benefits of technology.

Other ways technology is seen to have a positive effect on society include increased knowledge and understanding, improvements in industry and jobs and an interconnectedness of the world as a result of globalization.

negative effects of science and technology essay

Just 8% of Americans say technology has mostly had negative effects on society. The leading reason for this perspective is the feeling that technology has led to a breakdown of communication and human interaction (41% of this group). Another 28% say technology has degraded society’s morals and values, leading to a reliance on instant gratification and promoting negativity. Others complain that technology has led to an inability to handle normal tasks (20%) or to the misuse of widely available information (16%).

1.   With all the troubles in the world today, money spent on space exploration is a complete waste. The money could be better spent on other things.

Sample Answer

Nations after nations, everyday, every year, celebrate their achievements in space  exploration . However, it is now time to question how meaningful these blasts are. This  essay aims to explain why it is questionable.

First, until all urgent and important matters in this globe have been solved, money  bumped on space exploration is of no meaning. It is not a common sense at all to invest  million dollars researching and producing foods for astronauts (for space exploration  purpose), while everyday thousands of people are starving. Furthermore, the discovery  of outer space only serves a minor group of people if the majority are even not well-educated. Those in rural areas or third-world nations do no even know how to prevent  common threatening diseases like AIDS and lung cancer.

Then, some may argue that the purpose of space exploration are to discover new lands,  new energy resources or to deter potential threat to globe. Nevertheless, is it effective to  do so while other alternatives are available? Lands on earth are no yet effectively used.  New energy resources (e.g. solar and nuclear energy) have not yet been widely-used.  Threats of plagues have not yet been deterred. All these ? not- yets? need money. That  is why costly space discovery programs are a waste of money.

In the nutshell, people should only invest in space exploration providing that early-mentioned urgent and important matters have been solved. Also, purposes of space  exploration campaign should be studied carefully and other alternatives should be  considered before money is wasted.

2.   Some say that the internet is making the world smaller by bringing people together. To what extent do to you agree that the internet is making it easier for people to communicate with one another.

A global village, that is certainly what the world feels like nowadays. With the help of the  world wide web, you can reach out and get to know people you might never meet in  person. Articles can be coauthored, business deals can be finalized, degrees can be  earned and at times even medical advice can be given? and all of this is just a click  away.

Electronic mail, instant messages, web cameras and microphones; all these gadgets  and programs make the presence of the other the person more real. Who knows; with  the help of visual reality you might even get a 3-D image of the speaker! I believe that  the internet is one the best inventions of the last century, you can hardly get to miss  anyone and nobody is really out of reach. You will get to keep the channels patent with  your friends, and will be able to do your work from your bedroom in your pajamas!

However, the internet can also be a major source of harassment. Spammers and  hackers can invade your privacy and get personal/confidential information, which  otherwise they will never get access to. You are never out of anybody’s reach, unless  you make a conscious decision of not checking your email, there can be always more  work waiting for you in your inbox and you might never have a moment for yourself.  Worse, if you were a workaholic, you might never experience that stress-free vacation  ever again in your life? simply, because you have your mobile workplace with you.

As a romantic, I will always look forward to getting an occasional letter in the snail mail.  A personal letter, where I can sense the mood of the writer by the slants in his/her  handwriting and get to know him/her better. But as a type A personality person, the  internet gives me all what I dream of in communication? speed, reliability, and  convenience of time and place. I can certainly tolerate its shortcomings any day, as long  as it keeps me close to my loved ones.

3.   Internet when used as a source of information, has more drawbacks than advantages. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Some people believe that internet access creates problems. There are several possible reasons why it can happen.

First, some data may be unverifiable. For example, everytime they search for a data,  there would be lots of choices that would appear on the screen. They would not be sure  if the data they are reading has accurate information. Some sources have even  outdated informations. Second, some sites may be unreliable. For instance, people sign  up on one site that sells goods using online purchases. The goods would be paid for by  credit card but the purchaser would not receive anything. And finally, not everything is  available through the net. When my friend had tried to research for some pictures of  18th century paintings, he did not find any results. Then he was told by his teacher that  it would only be available in the library.

Others believe that internet is very useful and these are the justifications. First, it is hard  to get data, that is available in the net by other means. For example, if directory  information could not give me the accurate address and contact number of the place I want to visit, I normally check that information from the Internet. In just one click, I would  get all the details of that certain company. Second, research becomes more  comprehensive. For instance, I do not have to buy lots of reading materials to complete  my research. Most of the needed information can be found if I have Internet access.  And finally, data is easily compared and contrasted. I remember, my cousin researched  the study about overweight children a decade ago and at present. He was able to finish  his research in just one day, as compared to week if he would not use the Internet.

In conclusion, let me reiterate that the Internet plays a big role in our life, because it  makes data retrieval and comparison easier.

4.    We have been living in the nuelear age now for over half a century. Since the first atomic bombs were developed, nuclear technology has provided governments with the ability to totally destroy the planet. Yet the technology has been put to positive use as an energy source and in certain areas of medicine. To what extent is nuclear technology a danger to life on Earth? What are the benefits and risks associated with its use?

These days, many people are afraid of nuclear technology because of the dangers  associated with its use. In my opinion, although it is true that nuclear weapons pose the  greatest threat to life, the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes also carries  some serious risks.

Nuclear power stations provide an important source of cheap power for many  industrialised nations and some developing countries. However, there is always the  danger of radiation leaking from these plants. Even though safety precautions are  taken, there have been numerous disasters such as the explosion of a nuclear plant in Russia not long ago.

Nuclear technology is even used to help cure some diseases such as cancer. Radiation  can be applied to the body to burn away cancerous cells. This is, however, a dangerous  procedure, and the application of radiation is almost always painful and not always  successful. The most worrying aspect of nuclear technology, though, is its use for military purposes.  Enough atomic bombs have already been built to completely destroy the planet, and the  real danger is that one day some country will start a war with these weapons. Too many  countries now have the technology required to make such bombs, and there is currently  much debate about how to control the situation.

In conclusion, nuclear technology certainly has positive uses, but is, nonetheless,  dangerous. However, it would have been better if it had never been used to create  nuclear weapons. If life on Earth is to continue.

5.   ‘Telecommuting’ refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades. How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?

The spread of telecommuting is sure to have far-reaching effects on society. By itself,  telecommuting refers to office workers spending much of their time working from home and  using electronic technologies to communicate with their employers. The broader implications of  telecommuting, however, may involve changes to corporate structure, workers’ lifestyles and  even urban planning.

The most obvious changes may be apparent in the `normal’ offices of companies, governments  and other organisations. If even half the working week is spent telecommuting from home, then  we would initially expect many empty desks in the office. As offices grow smaller, workers  coming in for the day would be expected to share desks with their absent colleagues. This, in  turn, may affect the social atmosphere of an organisation, however, as less social contact with  one’s colleagues could harm morale and loyalty.

For the individual office worker, telecommuting would mean spending more time at home. For a  parent with young children, this may be a blessing. Moreover, many telecommuters would be  able to work the hours they wished: having a nap in the afternoon, for example, but working  some hours in the evening. One substantial benefit for all telecommuting workers is that there  will be no need to travel to work, allowing more free time.

The structure of urban life is also likely to be affected by telecommuting. We would expect to  see fewer cars on the road during peak hours and, eventually, a smaller concentration of offices  in cities’ central business districts. In short, people will have less reason to travel to city centres  from outlying areas. As more people work and live in the same location, shops and cultural  events will likely relocate themselves out of the city centre.

In sum, telecommuting will serve not only to change the way we work but also the way we live.

 (305 words)

6.    Telecommuting: will it change the world?

Telecommuting will have major effects in the worlds of work and family life. However, its  biggest effect will be in the area of individual freedom, responsibility, and time  management.

Work and workplaces will alter dramatically. Offices may become smaller, as fewer  desks are needed. There will be greater need for high-bandwidth connections to link the  office and the home, and even homes to other homes, as other employees and  supervisors also begin working at home. Hours spent commuting, traffic jams, and fights  for parking should diminish, as workers make fewer journeys or work staggered hours.

Family life will also change. Workers, both husbands and wives, can arrange their work  around family commitments such as taking children to school, cooking, leisure activities,  etc. However, households will also have to set aside areas for work – particularly if both  spouses are telecommuting.

However, although the ideas of more time at home and less time traveling are attractive,  there are some drawbacks to telecommuting. People may feel unable to escape their  work, and may even work longer or more unsocial hours. The quality of work may suffer  because of the reduced face-to-face interaction with other employees. There may be  delays if other workers are not immediately available. Telecommuters may feel isolated  or unmotivated, or insecure about decisions. A major change will be in the way people  think about work as a place or an institution. Instead, they will focus on the task or product. Workers may feel less loyal to a company and more inclined to change jobs or  work part-time or on contract.

In conclusion, the effects are difficult to predict because they depend on the extent to  which telecommuting becomes popular. However, telecommuting could be the start of a  major societal shift, possibly as big as the Industrial Revolution which created our  present ideas of work.

7.    With the increasing popularity of computers and calculators, student literacy is decreasing dramatically. What are the positive and negative effects the progress of science and technology has brought about?

It has been widely noted that, with the growing use of computers and calculators both in the  classroom and in the home, the level of literacy and mathematical ability of students is dropping.  This raises serious doubts about the value of the progress of science and technology. Here I will  discuss the pros and cons of this question.

First of all, advances in science and technology have certainly brought about many benefits for  mankind. They have made our lives more comfortable and healthier. In addition, they have  eased the burden of work for most people and provided them with more leisure opportunities,  while at the same time increasing productivity dramatically.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that technology has some negative side-effects. As  mentioned above, with computers which check spelling, grammar and calculation for them,  students have little incentive to learn how to do these things for themselves. Also, the availability  of TV programs and videos encourages an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle.

Another aspect of this issue is that technology may be good or bad, depending on how we use  it. For instance, dynamite may be used to make road construction easier, or it may be used to  kill people. Again, nuclear reactors can supply huge amounts of cheap electricity, but if they are  carelessly handled they can cause devastating pollution.

We can conclude that the progress of science and technology has both positive and negative  effects. What we must do is to make sure that the positive ones are encouraged and the  negative ones are eliminated as far as possible. Among other things, this means that students  are warned not to let computers and calculators do all their work for them.

Indigenous knowledge system (IKS) is dealt on several levels, first as a means for sustainable and self reliant development, second as an alternate source of overcoming the current evils of modern world, third to preserve their own cultural individuality which has long been threatened by the capitalist ethos. Historical evidence reveals that all nations who prospered consulted their own wisdom, their cultural strengths and their indigenous resources. This essay evaluates the development efforts in the Indus valley of Pakistan to find out the faulty vision along with over ambitious mission statements. Rethinking development from IKS has somehow proved to be essentially imperative development solution. Real development would be the process in which people would take a lead in determining their on-coming trends of life. The agricultural community has to start thinking of going back to the rich cultural heritage and contributing to world’s knowledge repertoire. It is concluded that sustainable agricultural development requires; optimal use of local resources and the meeting of basic needs, development of related indigenous manpower and human resources, and development of grass-roots institutions and participation along path of national development.

introduction

Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Technology is a tool that can be used to solve real-world problems. The field of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) “seeks to promote cross-disciplinary integration, civic engagement, and critical thinking” of concepts in the worlds of science and technology ( Harvard University, n.d.). As an aspect of everyday life, technology is continuously evolving to ensure that humanity can be productive, efficient, and follow the path of globalization . STS is a concept that encompasses countless fields of study. “Scientists, engineers, and medical professionals swim (as they must) in the details of their technical work: experiments, inventions, treatments and cures. “promotes cross-disciplinary integration, civic engagement, and critical thinking” It’s an intense and necessary focus” ( Stanford University , n.d.). On the opposite side of the spectrum is STS, which “draws attention to the water: the social, political, legal, economic, and cultural environment that shapes research and invention, supports or inhibits it — and is in turn shaped by evolving science and technology” ( Stanford University , n.d.). Technology is a crucial part of life that is constantly developing to fit the changing needs of society and aiding humanity in simplifying the demands of everyday life.

According to Oberdan (2010), science and technology share identical goals. “At first glance, they seem to provide a deep and thorough going division between the two but, as the discussion progresses, it will become clear that there are, indeed, areas of overlap, too” (Oberdan, 25). Philosophers believe that for a claim to be considered knowledge, it must first be justified, like a hypothesis, and true.  Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer, Galileo Galilei , was incredibly familiar with the obstacles involved with proving something to be a fact or a theory within the scientific world. Galileo was condemned by the Roman Catholic church for his beliefs that contradicted existing church doctrine (Coyne, 2013). Galileo’s discoveries, although denounced by the church were incredibly innovative and progressive for their time, and are still seen as the basis for modern astronomy today. Nearly 300 years later, Galileo was eventually forgiven by the church, and to this day he is seen as one of the most well known and influential astronomers of all time. Many new innovations and ideas often receive push back before becoming revolutionary and universal practices.

INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY

Flash forward to modern time where we can see that innovation is happening even more around us. Look no further than what could be considered the culmination of modern technological innovation: the mobile phone. Cell phone technology has developed exponentially since the invention of the first mobile phone in 1973 ( Seward , 2013). Although there was a period for roughly 20 years in which cell phones were seen as unnecessary and somewhat impractical, as society’s needs changed and developed in the late 1990s, there was a large spike in consumer purchases of mobile phones. Now, cell phones are an entity that can be seen virtually anywhere, which is in large part due to their practicality. Cell phones, specifically smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone , have changed the way society uses technology. Smartphone technology has eliminated the need for people to have a separate cell phone, MP3 player, GPS, mobile video gaming systems, and more. Consumers may fail to realize how many aspects of modern technological advancement are involved in the use of their mobile phones. Cell phones use wifi to browse the internet, use google, access social media, and more. Although these technologies are beneficial, they also allow consumers locations to be traced and phone conversations to be recorded. Modern cell phone technologies collect data on consumers, and many people are unsure how this information is being used. Additionally, mobile phones come equipped with virus protection which brings the field of cybersecurity into smartphone usage. The technological advances that have been made in the market for mobile phones have been targeted towards the changing needs of consumers and society. As proven by the rise in cell phones, with advancements in the field of STS comes new unforeseen obstacles and ethical dilemmas.

Technology is changing the way we live in this world. Innovations in the scientific world are becoming increasingly more advanced to help conserve earth’s resources and aid in the reduction of pollutants . Transportation is a field that has changed greatly in recent years due to modernization in science and technology, as well as an increased awareness of environmental concerns. The transportation industry continues to be a large producer of pollution

Tesla Model 3 Monaco

due to emissions from cars, trains, and other modes of transportation. As a result, cars have changed a great deal in recent years. A frontrunner in creating environmentally friendly luxury cars is Tesla, lead by CEO Elon Musk. Although nearly every brand of car has an electric option that either runs completely gas free, or uses significantly less fuel than standard cars, Tesla has taken this one step further and created a zero emissions vehicle. However, some believe that Tesla has taken their innovations in the transportation market a bit too far, specifically with their release of driverless cars.

“The recent reset of expectations on driverless cars is a leading indicator for other types of AI-enabled systems as well,” says David A. Mindell,  professor of aeronautics and astronautics, and the Dibner Professor of the History of Engineering and Manufacturing at MIT. “These technologies hold great promise, but it takes time to understand the optimal combination of people and machines. And the timing of adoption is crucial for understanding the impact on workers” ( Dizikes , 2019).

As the earth becomes more and more polluted, consumers are seeking to find new ways to cut down on their negative impacts on the earth. Eco-friendly cars are a simple yet effective way in which consumers can cut back on their pollution within their everyday lives.

THE INTERSECTION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The way in which energy is generated has changed greatly to benefit consumers and the environment. Energy production has followed a rather linear path over time, and is a prime example of how new innovations stem from old technologies. In the early 1800s, the steam engine acted as the main form of creating energy. It wasn’t until the mid-late 1800s that the combustion engine was invented. This invention was beneficial because it was more efficient than its predecessor, and became a form of energy that was streamlined to be used in countless applications. As time has progressed, this linear path of innovation has continued. As new energy creating technologies have emerged, machinery that was once seen as efficient and effective have been phased out. Today, largely due to the increased demand for clean energy sources, the linear path has split and consumers are faced with numerous options for clean, environmentally friendly energy sources. Over time, scientists and engineers have come to realize that these forms of energy pollute and damage the earth. Solar power, a modern form of clean energy, was once seen as an expensive and impractical way of turning the sun’s energy into usable energy. Now, it is common to see newly built homes with solar panels already built in. Since technology develops to fit the needs of society, scientists have worked to improve solar panels to make them cheaper and easier to access. A total of 173,000 terawatts (trillions of watts) of solar energy strikes the Earth continuously, which is more than 10,000 times of the world’s total energy use ( Chandler , 2011). This information may seem staggering, but is crucial in understanding the importance, as well as the large influence that modern forms of energy can have on society.

Technology has become a crucial part of our society. Without technological advancements, so much of our everyday lives would be drastically different. As technology develops, it strives to fulfill the changing needs of society. Technology progresses as society evolves. That being said, progress comes at a price. This price is different for each person, and varies based on how much people value technological and scientific advancements in their own lives. Thomas Parke Hughes’s Networks of Power “compared how electric power systems developed in America, England, and Germany, showing that they required not only electrical but social ‘engineering’ to create the necessary legal frameworks, financing, standards, political support, and organizational designs” ( Stanford University ). In other words, the scientific invention and production of a new technology does not ensure its success. Technology’s success is highly dependent on society’s acceptance or rejection of a product, as well as whether or not any path dependence is involved. Changing technologies benefit consumers in countless aspects of their lives including in the workforce, in communications, in the use of natural resources, and so much more. These innovations across numerous different markets aid society by making it easier to complete certain tasks. Innovation will never end; rather, it will continue to develop at increasing rates as science and technological fields becomes more and more cutting edge.

Introduction

Papers are replaced by computer interface, credit card type media, changes in travel, lowering the cost of living, works cited.

Science and technology have continued to play a central role in providing means through which people improve their well-being and health, alleviate poverty, and define themselves as a nation and people. Many societies are built on a firm foundation of science and technology and irrevocably dependent on them. As such, science and technology will continue to play a major role in shaping our lives and nation. It will change how people communicate and interact with each other, how people work, travel and how students learn. Technological innovation in the next 50 years will rival innovation that took place in the past 400 years.

According to Reuters, businesses and schools will go paperless as papers are replaced by computer interfaces built into furniture and walls. Advances in communication, energy distribution, and storage in consumer products and businesses will support a technology known as “room ware” that will support this breakthrough. Offices Tables, walls, and cafeteria tables will double as terminals that will allow a person to write down the idea and send it to a personal desk or computer located somewhere else. School and office Walls and windows will have the capability to display maps and direction commands to help locate particular offices, staff, classrooms, etc ( Reuters, 2009). As offices/schools go paperless, the environment will benefit from reduced dependent on the tree for paper production.

After a long period of stability as the main choice of storage DVD and CD, media will be replaced by credit card type media by 2015. As the internet becomes more flexible coupled with the availability of cheap massive storage space, high data transfer rate, people will no longer need physical storage media to store data. File storage and access will be done remotely due to the convenience brought by the internet. Movies will only be available for download from the internet and that the user will need to access code to get movies and data. (B, 2009)

Innovation in Science and Technology will also change travel. People will be traveling on sky car that will be cruising comfortably at a speed of 300Miles per hour using regular fuel. The sky car will be equipped with onboard computers and will be fully automated. This means that one will not need a license to fly the sky car. The sky car will be equipped with redundant engines for safety purposes just in case the main engine fails (FutureCars.com, 2010). The cost of a new sky car will be equal to that of a luxury car once mass production begins. Sky car will be cost less to main and will launch and land at a pad the size of the dining room. Using sky car, people will be able to avoid traffic, spending tickets and save travel time.

Other speculations about the future include the availability of cheap, advanced personal equipment for self-diagnosis for illnesses that currently require a costly medical diagnosis. This will reduce the cost of health care and health insurance, hence lowering the cost of living. It will also lead to better health. Robots will also become part of mainstream life, in form of interactive toys, household items like carpets and pets will require no maintenance (Mooneyham, 2005).

The future will be shaped greatly by continued innovation in science and technology. Offices will go paperless and papers will be replaced by a computer interface inbuilt on office furniture and walls. DVD and CD media will be replaced by credit card types of media as people turn to online data storage and access. Technology innovation will also have a great impact on travel with the introduction of sky cars, which will result in reduced travel time and traffic congestion. New health equipment will help people to diagnose themselves for diseases, hence reducing the cost of health care, leading to better health.
