LSU Scholarly Repository

Help with Search

Simple search.

The sidebar search will locate content that includes all of the terms you enter. The terms may be in any metadata field or in the full text. Additionally, you may use the drop-down menu to specify content from only a single publication, from the repository as a whole, or across all repositories using bepress Digital Commons.

To save the results of a search, or to receive notifications of future content that matches your criteria, click the "Save this search" button. Creating an account is simple and free, and you may unsubscribe from notifications at any time.

Advanced Search

The default advanced search is set to "All Fields," which will query all the criteria used in a simple search. You may refine results using the drop-down menus provided, and use the +/- buttons to include additional criteria.

  • Date range limits results to content published within the specified period. The format for date range is MM/DD/YYYY - MM/DD/YYYY. Example: 08/01/2001 - 08/01/2011.
  • Sort by automatically displays results in order of relevance (i.e., closest match), but may be changed to publication date if desired.

Special characters can enhance your results. Lowercase your terms in combination with the following:

  • Asterisks (*) within or at the end of a term function like multiple wildcards. Example: an All Fields search for l*nn will return results with lynn, linn, and lochlann.
  • Questions marks (?) within or at the end of a term function like single wildcards. Example: an All Fields search for l?nn will return results with lynn and linn, not lochlann.
  • Quotation marks (") around terms return exact phrase matches. Example: "cooler water" will return different results from "water cooler."
  • Tildes (~) at the end of a term return fuzzy matches. Example: colour~ will return results with colour, color, and coli.

Search supports some SOLR syntax as well. Proper capitalization of names is required with the following:

  • author_lname: The last name of an author can be specified. Example: an All Fields search for author_lname: Lynn will only return content by authors with the last name of Lynn.
  • author_fname: The first name of an author can be specified. Example: an All Fields search for author_fname: Lynn will only return content by authors with the first name of Lynn.

Commas will be ignored in any search. Instead, use the tips above to construct finely tuned queries, and then save your criteria using the "Save this search" feature.

John Wharton Lowe III is a saint in the Lavender household. We affectionately call him Saint John because of what he’s done as my mentor, ever since I took a Harlem Renaissance graduate seminar with him at Louisiana State University (LSU) twenty-seven years ago. He directed my MA thesis at LSU in the spring of 1998. He encouraged me to go to the University of Iowa for my PhD and knew I had gotten in with a fellowship weeks before the official announcement. He wrote a recommendation letter for my first job at the University of Central Arkansas in 2004 and kept in touch over the years with emails and phone calls. It was an easy thing to convince him to come to Eureka Springs and give the keynote address at the Arkansas Philological Association Conference in 2009. He encouraged me to step down in rank and away from tenure to move forward in my career by returning to LSU in 2013. He improved on that trick by getting me to move from LSU to the University of Georgia (UGA) in 2019 with a single phone call, where he made me aware of the Sterling-Goodman professorship by suggesting that I apply. And not just me, but my wife Heather. The point here is that for nearly twenty-seven years, when John called, I listened.

I had the privilege of being his suitemate for my first four years at UGA, the privilege of conversing with him about everything, especially his oddly choosing to be a Dawg rather than a Tiger in terms of football loyalties, the privilege of seeing him prep a Faulkner novel such as Absalom, Absalom! (1936) by rereading it, even though he must have taught that text countless times in his career. I saw his hunger for knowledge production. Believe me, it was unabated by retirement! He had three more book projects in the works that I was aware of: a completed biography on Ernest J. Gaines, a Colson Whitehead collection, and the long-gestating book “Faulkner’s Fraternal Furies” at his secret library carrel! John exemplified the life of the mind. My absolute favorite memory is walking behind Dr. Lowe in Allen Hall and listening to him and a colleague converse in English, Italian, German, and a bit of Spanish in a single conversation that I couldn’t possibly understand and thinking, wow! That was Saint John from my perspective. And if you didn’t experience his cooking, then that’s just too damn bad! Impossibly, he actually could have been a better chef than he was a scholar. So, then, this is my last goodbye to my friend, mentor, and colleague. The multilingual world traveler, foodie extraordinaire, opera lover, racquetball king, staunch Atlanta Braves supporter, Georgia Bulldog-loving sports fanatic, and scholar of American literature across a wide swath of disciplines has moved on to his next great adventure.
