Easily Create A 50th Birthday Speech

A 50th Birthday Speech is one of the best ways to make this special 50th birthday occasion memorable, so it is best to be prepared.

This can be a most joyous and fun occasion for yourself and all those involved in the celebration.  Your words can be the glue that brings it all together.

Birthday speeches and in particular special occasion speeches like 50th birthday party speeches may make you feel apprehensive and even anxious.

If you are anxious or nervous, use these ideas  to help you.  If after reading here you would like the assistance of an expert 50th Birthday speech writer that I know personally, then this is the place to go .

So what to consider now that you are going to speak at the celebration?

A 50th Birthday Speech - Prepare

If there is a special celebration to mark the occasion of a 50th birthday and you will be giving a speech, then consider your preparation for this event.

1. Audience

Consider your audience.

  • Who will they be?
  • Are they formal or informal or casual?
  • Will they be business colleagues, or friends?
  • Is it a social group or a sport club? Is it the golf group, or tennis club?

Your audience will guide your choice of words, whether more formal or business-like, or casual.  Your consideration of your audience will also assist if you choose to use quotes or humor . Take time to reflect on who will be there.

2. Location and time

The location for the 50th Birthday celebration is important for many reasons.  A private room or area is obviously best, but be prepared for a more public area.  Find out from the organiser where the celebration is planned to be held.  Consider the following:

  • How quiet it could be for a speech
  • A private gathering will be conducive to a speech, but if amidst other patrons (eg in a Club, a Hotel or a restaurant), be prepared for competing noise, and maintaining attention.

Will those gathered be sitting for a meal or standing with finger food?

  • A long table may mean you have to stand in a central location
  • If everyone is standing for finger food (for example), how will you gain attention and be seen?

Will the celebration be during the day, morning tea, lunch, or an evening meal?  Along with the location, the time of the celebration will influence how long you speak, and maybe its contents.

Consider the location and time of the birthday celebration

3. Formal or informal

Will the celebration be formal or informal?  Will everyone be dressed up in suits and nice dresses, will it be at a workplace or in a restaurant? Will it be on a weekend which could add a more casual atmosphere? Will it be inside or outside, perhaps even around a barbeque? Considering the location and time will give you an insight into how you construct your speech.

4. How long?

Are there many speeches or will you be the only speaker?  As a guide, consider a speech between four minutes to seven minutes.

Speech Structure

1. attention.

Consider your opening words to gain the attention of all gathered.  Is it a word picture that you paint or a short story, is it a well considered quote, or a quip?  Whatever you say, make it interesting so you have your audiences' attention.

The main part of your speech is the body, and can be divided into up to three parts that interconnect, ie one part leads to the next part.

Consider three points 1, 2 and 3 to form the centre or main part (Body) of your speech.

   1.    2.    3.

Of course, you can have more than three points but you risk making your speech longer, reducing attention, and with too many points, confusing your message.  I can personally recommend three points for an effective speech.

The Body of your speech is where you tell them.

3. Conclusion

The Conclusion rounds out and summarises your speech.

This is where you tell them what you have told them.

Adding Spice with Quotes and Humor For The 50th Birthday Speech

Quotes from eminent and well known people can really assist and lift your speech.  Choose quotes that fit your audience and if possible whose author could be known by your audience.  Of course whether you use formal quotes or humor , if it fits a sporting or hobby side of the birthday person all the better and all will relate to the words.

The best and safest humor is self deprecating, so if you are giving a 50th birthday speech about yourself, this is the best humor.  Of course these examples can help , and are especially useful if you are speaking about another who is turning 50. Humor is the oil that lubricates your words, so if you can use humor certainly incorporate it in a sensitive way. You are now ready to go and deliver your 50th Birthday Speech, and you will wow them. All the very best and don't forget to enjoy the moment of the celebrations.

A 50th birthday speech is an opportunity to create a memorable moment.  Congratulations.

Use humor to engage the audience

Humor is a powerful tool to connect with the audience and make your speech more enjoyable . Incorporate funny anecdotes or light-hearted jokes that are relevant to the birthday person’s life or experiences. However, it’s important to ensure that the humor is tasteful and appropriate for the occasion.

Share heartfelt and personal stories

By sharing these personal anecdotes, you not only entertain the audience but also create an emotional connection with them.

Incorporate meaningful quotes or poems

Including meaningful quotes or poems can add depth and resonance to your speech . Choose quotes or poems that reflect the personality, values, or aspirations of the birthday person. These quotes can serve as inspiration and provide a unique perspective on life, making the speech more impactful and memorable.

Express gratitude and appreciation

Expressing gratitude and appreciation towards the birthday person is essential . Acknowledge their contributions, support, and positive impact on your life or the lives of others. This not only makes the speech more heartfelt but also creates a sense of warmth and love in the room.

Avoid controversial or embarrassing topics

Remember that the purpose of the speech is to celebrate the birthday person’s achievements and create a positive and memorable experience. Stay away from sensitive subjects or stories that may cause discomfort or embarrassment.

By following these tips, you can deliver a memorable 50th birthday speech that will be cherished by the birthday honoree and the audience. However, there are additional tricks that can further enhance the impact of your speech.

Tricks to enhance the impact of the speech

Use visual aids or props.

Incorporating interactive elements can make your speech more dynamic and engaging . For example, you can ask the audience to participate in a brief activity or share their own memories related to the birthday person. This not only breaks the monotony but also creates a sense of inclusivity and involvement.

Incorporate multimedia elements, such as photos or videos

Multimedia elements, such as photos or videos, can bring your speech to life . Consider including a slideshow of memorable moments or a short video montage that showcases the birthday person’s journey. These visual elements can evoke emotions and create a powerful impact on the audience.

Practice the speech beforehand

Practice is key to delivering a confident and memorable speech . Rehearse your speech multiple times to familiarize yourself with the content, timing, and flow. This will help you deliver the speech smoothly and confidently, allowing you to connect with the audience more effectively.

Don’t: Overwhelm the Speech with Inside Jokes

While inside jokes can be entertaining for a select few, they may alienate the rest of the audience. Avoid overwhelming your speech with inside jokes that only a few people will understand. Instead, focus on anecdotes and stories that are relatable and inclusive.

Don’t: Rush Through the Speech

Nervousness can sometimes lead to rushing through the speech. However, it’s important to maintain a steady pace and allow the audience to absorb your words. Take pauses when necessary, emphasize important points, and allow the speech to flow naturally. Rushing through the speech may cause you to stumble or lose the impact of your message.

By following these dos and don’ts, you can ensure that your 50th birthday speech is not only impactful but also well-received by the audience. Remember, the goal is to create a memorable experience that celebrates the person’s life and achievements while leaving a positive impression on everyone present.

In conclusion, delivering a memorable 50th birthday speech requires careful preparation and execution. By understanding the significance of the occasion, gathering relevant information, and structuring your speech effectively, you can create a lasting memory for the birthday honoree. Additionally, by incorporating tricks such as visual aids, interactive elements, and multimedia, you can enhance the impact of your speech and make it more engaging for the audience. Finally, keeping in mind the dos and don’ts of delivering a speech will help you strike the right balance and ensure a successful delivery. So, embrace the opportunity to craft a memorable 50th birthday speech and celebrate the person’s achievements and experiences in a way that truly resonates with everyone present.

Dos and don’ts of delivering a 50th birthday speech

When it comes to delivering a memorable 50th birthday speech, there are certain dos and don’ts that can make all the difference. Here are some guidelines to help you craft a speech that will leave a lasting impression on the birthday honoree and the audience.

Do: Speak from the heart

Authenticity is key when delivering a 50th birthday speech. Speak from the heart and let your genuine emotions shine through. Share personal stories and anecdotes that showcase the special bond you have with the birthday person. This will not only make your speech more relatable but also create a deeper connection with the audience.

Do: Keep the speech concise and focused

Brevity is important when delivering a birthday speech. Keep your speech concise and focused, aiming for a duration of around 5-7 minutes. Remember, the goal is to engage the audience and leave a lasting impact, so avoid rambling or going off on tangents. Stick to the main points and deliver them in a clear and organized manner.

Don’t: Overwhelm the speech with inside jokes

While inside jokes can be entertaining for those who are familiar with them, overusing them in a birthday speech can alienate the rest of the audience. Avoid inside jokes that only a select few will understand, as this can make others feel left out. Instead, focus on stories and anecdotes that are relatable and inclusive, ensuring that everyone can enjoy and appreciate your speech.

Don’t: Rush through the speech

Pace yourself when delivering a 50th birthday speech. Avoid the temptation to rush through it due to nervousness or time constraints. Take your time to articulate your words clearly and allow for pauses to let important points sink in. This will not only make your speech more impactful but also give the audience time to absorb and appreciate your message.

Remember, the purpose of the speech is to celebrate the birthday person and create a memorable experience for everyone involved. Rushing through the speech can undermine its impact and diminish the significance of the occasion.

In addition to these dos and don’ts, here are a few extra tips to help you deliver an exceptional 50th birthday speech:

  • Prepare and practice your speech beforehand. Familiarize yourself with the content and rehearse it multiple times to ensure a smooth delivery.
  • Maintain eye contact with the audience to establish a connection and engage them throughout your speech.
  • Use confident body language to convey your message effectively. Stand tall, use hand gestures, and move around the stage if appropriate, to keep the audience’s attention.
  • Incorporate meaningful quotes or poems that resonate with the birthday person’s journey and add depth to your speech.
  • Express gratitude and appreciation towards the birthday person and those who have contributed to their life. This will create a positive and uplifting atmosphere.

By following these dos and don’ts, as well as incorporating these additional tips, you can deliver a 50th birthday speech that will be remembered for years to come. Remember, the key is to speak from the heart, keep it concise, avoid inside jokes, and maintain a steady pace. With these guidelines in mind, you are well on your way to crafting a memorable speech that will make the birthday honoree feel truly special.

Birthday Speeches - Tips

Birthday speeches can be so nerve-wracking, especially when you're stuck for words. Don't know where to start your birthday speech? If you need professional speechwriting tips, you've come to the right place. I've written hundreds of speeches, so I have many insider tips for you.

By Kevin Nishmas   Updated: September 30, 2023

Tips to Make Birthday Speeches Memorable

To get started, take a look at my proven birthday speechwriting tips below and  check out some speech samples right here.

Because your loved one's birthday celebration is important enough to call for a speech from you, it's not enough to just get it right  — you need to make yours memorable.

Go the extra mile with these professional speechwriting tips.

8 things to consider before writing birthday speeches

1. Decide to write a formal or informal speech

  • You'll need a formal speech (an average-length speech) for a formal reception
  • Give an informal speech (a shorter version) for a casual house party

2. Consider your audience

  • Find out who's invited to the birthday celebration.  Only family? Family and friends? Co-workers? The boss?
  • Tailor your speech to give your audience exactly what you think they want, need and/or expect to hear. For example, if your audience is mostly made up of family and friends, get a little personal with your birthday speech.
  • Use a presentation style and project a personality that fits your audience.

3. Find out if you're the only speaker

  • As the only speaker, you'll need to cover many topics.
  • If you're one of many speakers, you may only have to cover one subject.

4. Pick the right tone of voice

  • Generally, your tone should be light-hearted, funny, sincere, congratulatory and upbeat.

5. Avoid anything hurtful or embarrassing

  • You can be humorous (i.e. tease the birthday boy or girl) but, as I mentioned above, be playful, not mean-spirited.
  • Don't use any obscene language, unless the audience calls for it (again, know your room).
  • Don't be off-color or pornographic in any way (most people don't enjoy anything too X-rated in mixed company).
  • Never delve into any sensitive subject areas, like alcoholism (this will just turn the birthday celebration into a nightmare).

6. Determine how long you should speak

  • If you're making an informal speech, make your birthday speech at least three minutes in length (the gold standard).
  • Make your birthday speech longer than three minutes (but no longer than six or seven minutes) when it's for a major milestone birthday (40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th or 100th birthday).
  • Generally, use the KISS (Keep it Short and Simple) rule. The shorter the speech, the more memorable it will be.

7. Prepare and practice to stay calm

  • Preparation and practice will help you overcome a chunk of your public speaking fears.
  • Practice your speech until you can deliver it easily (until you have all the phrasing, pauses and timing exactly right).
  • How long should you practice? That depends on you. But the rule of thumb is as follows: for every four minutes, you should practice four hours.
  • Practice delivering the speech in front of a friend or family member you trust (this is one of the best ways to overcome stage fright).
  • For more tips on calming your nerves before making a speech, take a moment to read this great article:  Crushing the Fear of Public Speaking . It's worth your time.

8. Deliver your speech like a pro

  • Scan the audience slowly (not too slow) and look at the birthday boy or girl as you speak. Basically, maintain eye contact with the birthday girl or boy and look just over the heads of the audience.
  • Use your normal voice to deliver your speech (let the mic or the room's acoustics do the rest).
  • Write your speech on numbered index cards, which are so much easier to handle as you speak.

How to Write a Wonderful Birthday Speech

If you've been asked to write a birthday speech for a friend, colleague or family member, you're probably suffering from mixed emotions! On the one hand, it's an honor to be asked. On the other, you might feel entirely panic-stricken! What on earth will you say? How will you do the birthday boy/girl justice?

The tips on this page are designed to help - and at the end of the page, there are a couple of links to sample speeches which you can adapt and use yourself if you need to!

Tips for crafting a knockout birthday speech

Do your research.

If you're being asked to speak at a birthday celebration, then you probably know the person who is having a birthday pretty well. But that doesn't mean you can skip this all-important step!

Find out a little MORE about the guest of honor that you didn't know. Ask their friends or family members to tell you a unique story about the person you are honoring. These kinds of memories can make great material to put into your speech. Memories from family members tend to be of a touching, sensitive nature, whereas the recollections of friends are often hilarious! Using both will give you a well-rounded speech that will appeal to everyone. Plus, you'll get to know some of the guests better, so you'll be more at ease speaking in front of them.

Birthday Speech

Be Sensitive

Some people treat a birthday speech as an opportunity to roast the guest of honor. While a little bit of joking around is acceptable - and can be fun - don't try to embarrass the individual.

This is their special day, one which they should be enjoying. Make an attempt to really honor who they are, by acknowledging their contribution to your life and the lives of all the people in attendance.

Know the Audience

Ask a professional speaker, and they will tell you that you have to know the audience to deliver a great speech.

This doesn't mean that you have to be acquainted with every guest, but you should know the general make-up of the crowd.

Are the guests all family and close friends? Are there co-workers present? How about kids?

You have to be sensitive to the audience before you deliver your speech. Being prepared means inquiring about the people in attendance.

Leave on a High Note

Remember, your speech is meant to honor and celebrate someone on a momentous occasion.

Don't ramble or get muddled with complex topics. Keep the general tone light and celebratory. Be sure to tell the person a happy birthday and thank the person who invited you to speak.

Birthday parties are meant to be fun occasions. Make sure that you keep these tips in mind when you are asked to speak for friends or family members at their party.

You'll probably bring a gift to the party, but a great birthday speech may be the gift that the guest of honor will remember the most.

Birthday speech

Putting a birthday speech together can be a very daunting process, especially if you have to write it for someone else.

Like many of us, unless you have a natural talent, it’s not uncommon to go blank when it comes to this topic. The usual spiel of thanking everyone and telling them to enjoy their night is satisfactory though can be quite boring and leave everyone yawning.

But dont worry, by following these easy tips and examples of speeches, you will be able to ensure your birthday speech is one that captivates your audience and makes the moment a memorable one.

5 tips to help you with your next birthday speech

1. write it all down.

Take a few moments to list all the qualities and funny moments in dot points to give you an understanding of what you want to highlight. After listing them all down, take the time to elaborate on the points.

2. Find a sample speech that works

Find a sample birthday speech that you feel is suitable for the occasion. Use the points and information that you had written previously and incorporate them into the sample speech. By using the sample speech as a template, you have the benefit of following a proven recipe. It allows for the speech to be structured so it becomes fluent and highlights your points more concisely.

3. Engage your audience

Add humor to the speech to captivate your audience with a few laughs to enhance the vibe of the event. Not sure what to add? Why not take a moment to ask a close friend or relative of some funny moments they have experienced with the birthday person. If the stories are not suitable or non existent, then consider looking up some great one liners and add them into your speech to lighten the mood.

Your aim is to ensure the audience is actively engaged in your speech by focusing on the qualities of the birthday person which they can relate to. Bringing up memorable stories which highlight great times or milestones helps to resonate qualities of the birthday person and Incorporating a story or two can also make a point of enhancing the qualities which resonates what that person is really about.

4. Show sincerity

Towards the end of the speech, mention a few kind words to show them that you care. Thank everyone for coming, especially those who helped out in organising the event.

5. Keep it short

When people are at a party, they tend to have a short attention span and that’s if they haven’t had a drink yet. A speech which is between 2-5 minutes long is more than sufficient. By keeping it short, deep and meaningful, you can be sure to have your audience’s attention.

How to give a birthday speech – From friend to guest of honor

Here are a few examples of free birthday speeches for your next occasion:

Birthday speech example 1 – Thank you speech

Birthday speech

Firstly I would like to thank you all for coming to celebrate this milestone with me. I am not one to come out and say a speech, this is actually the first for me. Normally I would shy off, though I feel today is a time where it must be done.

The reason why you are all here is that in one way or another, you have been apart of my life and moulded me to the person I am today. I would truly like to thank you all for that.

I would like to thank both my mom and dad for not only putting up with me but being there when it counted and making me who I am. Thank you! Also to those who I have grown up with and have helped me over the years, you know who you are… I can say that I am truly blessed to have you all in my life!

Last but not least, I need to say thank you to everyone who has helped to set up and make today happen. Now that’s enough of me saying thank you. I hope everyone enjoys themselves. Lets all have a drink and have a great time.

Birthday speech example 2 – Thank you speech

I want to take a moment to say thank you for everyone who has come down to come celebrate this birthday with me. It means a lot that you have all taken the time and I must say that I am blessed to have each and every one of you in my life. Thank you

Birthday speech example 3 – Thank you speech

A birthday is very important to a child. The cake, the candles and gifts are something which they which they look forward to weeks on end. As we get older, we begin to realize that more important than materialistic things are the things we celebrate to those who are most closest to us. I would like to say thank you for not only your best wishes and lovely gifts but for being here and making it the night that it is. Thank you.

Birthday speech example 4 – Coming of age and gratitude

I have to say that I am not one to perform any birthday speeches though with the amount of work which was put into making this night and the sheer turnout of people, I simply could not live with myself if I didn’t at least say a few words.

I would like to give a big shout out to all people involved it the planning of this special day of mine. As you all can see, a lot of time and effort has been spent to make this venue look beautiful and I am truly appreciative. Thank you.

For all of you who made the effort to come down here and celebrate this milestone of mine. I could not be happier as all of you in one way, shape, or form have shaped me to be the person I am today and for that I am eternally grateful. Through good times and bad, through sickness and in health, I have been supported and guided every step of the way and that has only reassured to me what really matters in life.

I have been quick to learn that all the flashy and shiny things in life slowly begin to fade, though the one thing that continues to shine in my world is the true connections and relationships I have formed with my family and friends.

So enough about all this sentimental nonsense. It’s time to put the music back on and get everyone back on this dance floor. Thank you all for coming and I hope you enjoy the night. Thank you!

Birthday speech example 5 – Coming of age

So whilst I am up here talking about this amazing day today we are celebrating, I have to say all the beautiful memories don’t I? Wrong. All I remember is the most embarrassing moments because I laughed so hard my glasses fell off my head, then I wasn’t too happy because I had to buy new ones.

So where do I start, my memory isn’t the best the older I get, that’s why my wife makes me do a crossword puzzle a day. Little does she know that I cheat from the answers on the bottom of the cross word page Ha-Ha. So as I get older and reflect, I would have to say best moments through out my life would have to be drawn to three main beautiful ones.

First would be marrying this beautiful lady I call my cook… I mean wife Ha-Ha.

Second would be becoming a father to these beautiful children standing in front of me, I am blessed to have the opportunity to raise these amazing children of mine and have never been more proud.

And thirdly, to the many people here today celebrating my birthday. I would not be the person standing here before you if it weren’t for each and everyone of you shaping me to who I am today.

I felt like writing this speech took me few minutes though I was told I was writing for most of the bloody day! Ha-Ha.

Thank you everyone for coming here today and celebrating this unforgettable night with me celebrating another year younger.

Birthday speech example 6 – For partner

Let’s face the truth. Some of us are not the best when it comes to remembering birthdays, but there is no way I could forget the birthday for the one I love. We are all here today to celebrate because (Name) has touched our lives in one way or another.

Today I want to openly say how much they mean to me. This is their birthday, and birthdays are supposed to be days which stand out in life. So (Name), I want to say thank you for being so caring over the years and making me so proud to be your partner.

Birthday speech example 7 – Birthday speech for husband

To the superman in my life. Happy birthday! Words are unable to express the amount of love I have for you. For anyone who knows you, knows how much of a kind hearted and bubbly character you are. Your generosity and strong nature are unlike no other I have ever met.

From when you came over to me over 20 years ago to ask me for my number, to building a strong relationship, falling in love, creating an incredible family, and now celebrating this milestone of yours today. It seems like a fairytale dream where I need to pinch myself every so often to believe that it is all true.

To all of you that have made the time to make it here tonight, thank you all for coming. Only people who were important to his life are here and it’s amazing how many people are actually here tonight.

Now back to my loving husband, on your birthday tonight, I want you to enjoy it without a care in the world, because a man like you deserves to be spoilt once in awhile. Happy birthday my love, may you continue to live with passion.

Birthday speech example 8 -Birthday speech for wife

To one of the most sexiest, beautiful, most amazing person apart from myself… Ha-Ha! To my incredible wife. I am unable to express how surreal it feels to have fallen in love and married such a beautiful soul. Never would I ever have thought i’d be so lucky to have such an angel like you in my life. Your smile, your character, your loving nature are just the tip of the iceberg of the many things you possess.

For all who are lucky enough to know her, understand that she is one who would do more for others than she would for herself. A quality which i’m sure we all agree is very rare these days. She always looks to see the positive in life, no matter how dark and gloomy things may be, something which she has allowed for me to adopt which has changed my life dramatically for the better, and i’m sure many others who are also here tonight.

To those who made the effort to come here today and celebrate this beautiful day today, thank you. You have made this day memorable and something i’m sure my wife will never forget. Now the party is still not over, so all of you grab a glass of champagne, and let’s party on well into the night as we celebrate this girls beautiful birthday.

Birthday speech example 9 – From mother to child

From changing your nappies to feeding you every time you cry, to making your favorite food which was always apple pie. The memories I have shared with you while growing up by your side, it was well worth the struggles and bumpy rides.

I look at you know and can’t stop smiling, for a beautiful grown boy/girl that you have become, no matter what you will always be my baby boy/girl, happy birthday and may this be another memory you will never forget like they first day we met. When you were born on this special day.

Birthday speech example 10 – 1 st birthday speech from mother

Even though your only one and you’re probably staring at me thinking what it this lady doing, my feeding time is soon. I am going to say this speech in front of all the family friends that are gathered here today to celebrate my child’s 1st birthday, where the fun times just keep getting better and better.

I remember the first day that I felt so sick and then after that my pants wouldn’t fit. I started eating everything in sight and my pantry would always start full and now and by night there was nothing left to right. After that I couldn’t sleep and I would become a grump in the morning which was nothing of the unusual Ha-Ha.

Then my feet started to swell jeez now I can’t find shoes that will fit well. So after all that complaining and whining, the day came where you were brought into this world. Your father had fainted, which was nothing unusual and all I cared about was that you were finally out!

Now, as we celebrate your 1st birthday, you don’t understand anything right now, but when you do I’ll be saying another speech like this to embarrass you. More for the loving mother that I am to make sure you never forget something so important like this day.

Birthday speech example 11 – From father to son

I guess I will start with most that I know and the beautiful things I remember. I was the happiest man when I found out you were a boy, I was filled with joy! Everyday I would buy my little man a different toy, but there was a problem. Instead of playing with them, I would find you out in the garden. Eating dirt, mud, insects and even snails. You weren’t very good at hiding your muddy trails. How sweet and cute that was.

Then you would complain of feeling sick. Sometimes you were so difficult, just like trying to use a chopstick. You would always cry when I tried to feed you, and you loved to pee on me when I tried to change you. You were a sneaky little bugger and you loved to touch. I even remember having to pull you away from someone’s crotch. These are the beautiful memories that I remember.

Though enough with me embarrassing you with these funny times, this is you birthday so let it be filled with great times. So happy birthday to my great son, never forget that you are my number one!

Birthday speech example 12 – From friend

On this milestone that you have achieved, what an honor it is to be sharing this celebration with you. As we all know, this person has been determined since they were little, to strive and be the best they can, no matter what the circumstances were.

As (Insert name) continued to grow and mature, they created beautiful memories by making each moment count and radiating the love filled passions to each one that they came across. Im sure we can all say that we are eternally grateful that you have came into our lives and that you never lose your zest for life as you grow up into adulthood.

We all love you dearly and wish you nothing but the absolute best as that is what you truly deserve. Happy birthday!

Birthday speech example 13 – 21st Funny birthday speech from friend

Can I have your attention. We are all here today to realise something special. Something so worthwhile to celebrate. Something fun, enjoyable and memorable. We have come here together to recognise and share in the joy this moment brings. I am talking about the open bar! Ha-Ha!

On a more serious note, I would like to draw your attention to one of my best of friends whose 21st birthday we are celebrating here tonight. I have known (Insert name) for more than 10 years and during that time, we have had many moments of fun, adventure and as many of you may know, mischief. Whenever together, we always seemed to find a way to get ourselves into trouble.

Just like the time we decided to play a trick on his mom by colouring in his younger brothers face an interesting shade of green. We took the time to make it look realistic and ensured it was with a permanent marker so it couldn’t be easily rubbed off. I remember the look on his mom’s face as she freaked out and rushed the brother to the hospital. After the doctor giving it the once over and explaining to his mom the cause of the problem. I remember her glaring at us in a trance like state. Lets just say I had never seen someones face go that red before. We both found it to be funny at the time though I don’t think he saw the light of day for at least a month after that incident. Ha-Ha

Anyone who knows him, knows that he will go out of his way to ensure everyone is having a laugh. Even at his own expense, he wants to ensure everyone is having a great time.

He has taken on many challenges, and succeeded many times. Not by chance, but by perseverance and heart. Anyone who knows (Insert name), knows he is full of heart.

So on this milestone may you continue to strive for all that you want and just wanted to let you know that I am grateful to have such a great friend like you. Happy Birthday.

Birthday speech example 14 – 21st birthday speech

Yay! Im finally legal! Wow, this has been a long time coming for me, I mean now i can have a drink… Legally! Ha-Ha! Mum doesn’t seem to impressed!

Firstly I’d like to give a massive shout out to my parents, for not only raising such an awesome child, Ha-Ha! But also for making me who I am, and making this beautiful day happen. To my beautiful family members who cooked up all this beautiful food and helped to decorate this place, thank you so much, it looks absolutely beautiful.

To my wacky and crazy friends. You are all a bad influence on me and I thank you for that. Don’t worry mum, i’m only joking… It’s more like the other way around… Ha-Ha! As I get older, I begin to appreciate the significance of true family and friends in one’s life. I have to say that I couldn’t consider myself any luckier to have all of you in my life.

So anyway, let’s get out the champagne and celebrate my 21st birthday!

Birthday speech example 15 – 40th birthday speech

I can’t believe my 30’s have left me… I think it’s about time I started acting more serious and more so, my age… Well, maybe after tonight…

I remember when I was much younger, I would look at someone who was 40 and say to myself, that’s an old person. Now that I have turned the big 4-0! I now realise it was just an old person who was trying to figure out where the hell all the time went! Ha-Ha! I guess time flies when you’re having fun. Well I Know it’s definitely true for me. I’ll tell you why.

Firstly I have an amazing wife who is nothing but a bundle of joy to be around, and is able to always find a way to put a smile on my face.

Secondly I have been blessed with two beautiful boys who are an absolute pain in my ass, Ha-Ha! Though I do love so dearly! Apart from my gorgeous wife, I never thought I would love these boys so much, as much as I do. It must be because they remind me so much of me when I was growing up… Ha-Ha!

And thirdly… To all of you beautiful people standing here before me today. How can I not enjoy having each and every one of you in my life. I mean how lucky can a man get to have such funny, supportive and caring friends. Blessed is the word I use to describe having all of you be apart of my journey through life. Thank you all for being here today. Its is honestly an honour to celebrate this day with all of you here tonight.

Anyway, enough with all this sentimental crap, let’s pump the music back up, all grab a drink and at least let me celebrate being 39 one more time! Ha-Ha! Thank you!

Birthday speech example 16 – 50th birthday speech

Wow, how time flies! It’s only yesterday I can remember starting my first job at McDonalds where I met my best friend. And now I have a glass of champagne in my hand, celebrating my 50th birthday in front of all of you amazing people.

Where do I start? Firstly I need to give a massive shout out to my beautiful wife who made tonight happen. To not only organise all of this, but also keep it a secret from me which I am blown away how much effort she put in. The amount of detail she has put into this venue is incredible. Such an amazing woman, and I mean look at her, even after all these years, she is still a stunner!

To my two boys, I am proud of both of you and must say you are both still a pain in my ass. Must be because you remind me of when I was a kid growing up. Ha-Ha, they do say that karma eventually comes around. I can now understand what I put my parents through when I was growing up! But jokes aside they a great boys and couldn’t wish for any better.

Obviously I need to give a shout out to mum and dad for putting up with me over my younger years. Considering i’m sure many of you agree, I was no angel growing up. I like to think I turned out alright. Ha-Ha! Though I do have to say they were always there for support and was truly blessed to have incredible parents. I love you both.

To all my close family and friends here tonight. Thank you all for coming and most importantly, thank you for being apart of my life. All of you, in one way or another have been apart of my incredible journey of being 50 years on this earth and I wouldn’t want it any way.

So everybody grab a drink and let’s turn this music up, because i’m pretty sure you will all agree that after all these years and crazy memories, who would have known I would have made it this far. Ha-Ha! Thank you all for coming and hope you enjoy your night. Thank you!

Birthday speech example 17 – From daughter to fathers 50th birthday speech

For those of you whose memories are fading or may have had a little too much to drink tonight, we are here to celebrate the birthday of my dad. Fifty years ago today, the world was given a great gift. A gift by the name of (Insert name). The first of three children, my father was and still is, a very funny and generous man. Throughout the years, he has told many of us his overly simplistic, corny jokes which keeps us all laughing to this day. Just earlier he told me a joke and had me giggling like a little girl again. He said “What do you call a cheese that’s not yours? Nacho Cheese!”. I know, corny right? But it still does the job.

I suppose the main reason why we all have a little laugh and look forward to his humor is that he always likes to remind us that life is not meant to be taken too seriously and that laughter helps to keep us grounded. To this day, I have incorporated this philosophy into my life and I am sure all of us look forward to the energy and humor that he gives us.

Married to his high school sweetheart for 28 years, and with two pretty awesome kids, Ha-Ha. Sorry but I had to add that in. He has shown to be the best role model any family could ask for.

He has always been one to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and is not shy to have a casual drink when in good company.

On this birthday, may you enjoy your night and continue to pass on your energy and happiness for many more years to come. Happy birthday dad!

Birthday speech example 18 – 60th birthday speech

I can’t believe that as I stand here before you, I have been on this earth for 60 years. Seems like a long time, though for me, it feels like only yesterday I was celebrating my 21st birthday. I ought to cut out drinking or before I know it, i’ll be 100 soon. Ha-Ha!

For me, I have experienced both the joys and miseries of life and through it all, I have been able to take one thing from it. Regardless of life’s ups and downs, its all about making the most out of each situation and being present in the moment. Because as I get older, I begin to appreciate all of the moments life has to offer and the truth of the matter is that nothing is owed to us. For every day we wake up is a blessing. And as I am now 60 years old and CONSIDERED wise… Ha-Ha! I feel that we should make the most of each passing day, and what better way with both family and loved ones.

Lucky for me, I have been extremely fortunate to have all of my nearest and dearest to me all here tonight and I have to say, I wouldn’t want to have tonight any other way. Although it may be the wine talking, I must say that I love each and everyone of you here tonight… Especially the caterer, the food served here has been delicious! Ha-Ha! Now let’s all embarrass ourselves by having a few more drinks and getting on the dance floor!

Birthday speech example 19 – From daughter to mother

Your loving touch is like no other, your smile is brightest of all. Your heart beats love and care, but sometimes truth be told you are unfair. You are the only best friend a daughter could ask for. The sacrifices you have made to make sure I have the right path of guidance. You are the best mother a daughter could ever have. Wishing you a happy birthday with many more fun filled ones to come.

Birthday Speech Examples For A Festive Celebration

Birthday speech examples to honor the birthday person, often with a dash of humor

A birthday speech to acknowledge the special day of a friend, family member, or colleague introduces and honors the person and wishes them all the best of their happy day. Many birthday speech examples are available as templates to craft a birthday speech appropriate for the person celebrating.

Along with a festive song around the birthday cake, parties honoring someone celebrating a birthday often include a short toast or birthday speech. You might have the opportunity to speak if you are close to the birthday boy or girl.

How do you know if you should plan to speak? How do you choose the right words? Should you give a funny birthday speech or a serious one? As always, when you have questions, we have answers.

What Do You Say In A Birthday Speech?

100th birthday deserves a birthday speech

When framing a birthday speech , you need to consider a few things:

  • Who is the guest of honor?
  • What is their relationship to you?
  • Is the birthday boy or girl more likely to appreciate a serious or funny birthday speech?
  • How many people are speaking?
  • Will there be a set time to give birthday toasts or speeches, or will it be a simple, impromptu thing?

How Do You Start Birthday Speech Examples?

Starting a memorable occasion speech is especially easy if you are the first (or only) speaker. Then, a simple “good morning,” “good afternoon”, or “good evening” is an appropriate way to greet the guests. Once you give that traditional greeting, jump into what you want to say.

“We are gathered here tonight for a birthday celebration to honor our close friend (name). Growing up with (name), I found myself wondering if we would see our 60th birthdays.

Remember riding our dirt bikes? Jumping off of the roof into your aunt’s pool? And how could we forget our 21st birthday? But the point is we survived youth craziness, and here we are. Let’s all raise a glass to (name) on his special day. Happy birthday, my friend.”

What Do You Say In A Birthday Speech If You Are A Parent?

If you are the parent, are you hosting the event for your son or daughter? Certain milestone birthdays, such as the 16th or 18th, might still require a parent to host.

A parent giving a birthday speech might thank all of the wonderful people for coming to celebrate their son or daughter’s birthday. How you word the rest of the speech depends on how close your relationship is with your child and your child’s gender and age.

For example, a dad talking about his little girl at her Quinceanera will acknowledge that his daughter is now considered a woman. The speech will include points of pride and love for his daughter. At a Quinceanera, a tradition in Hispanic culture that happens on a young woman’s 15th birthday, it is tradition for many guests to give a short speech.

Quinceanera cake

Of course, there are occasions in most cultures where a parent would give a birthday speech. Many young women celebrate a Sweet Sixteen with a party. Since most mothers hope to be their daughter’s best friend one day, this party is a lovely time for a mother to state this hope.

Here is an example birthday speech from a mom for her daughter’s sweet sixteen,

“Thank you for coming to (name’s) sweet sixteen party. My little girl is practically grown up now, and it is hard to believe because it all happened in the blink of an eye. I want to express my birthday wishes to (name). We have built many beautiful memories over your lifetime, (name).

You have grown into a beautiful young woman and quickly moved from being my daughter to being a great friend. I want to extend birthday wishes on behalf of your dad and me. Happy birthday, princess.”

What Should I Say In A Birthday Speech For A Coworker?

BIrthday speech examples - coworker

When celebrating a coworker’s birthday, think about your relationship before making a speech and offering a toast. It might be appropriate for you to talk about how much positive energy they add to the workplace. Another tactic could be to discuss how they are such a team player.

Never bring up anything negative at a person’s birthday party. If you find them annoying or lazy as a coworker, say nothing.

What Should I Say In My Friend’s Birthday Speech?

If it is your best friend’s birthday, there are many angles to approach for giving a great birthday speech. First, you might share some  fun stories.  This is especially great if you have been friends for a long time and have some  great memories  to talk about. Using  touching quotes  is another way to approach the speech.

While certain birthdays are conducive to poking fun about the person’s age, we want to caution you that not everyone takes these well. If your friend seems to be struggling with age, sharing stories might be more appropriate than pulling  out the “old fart” jokes.  Bring out the hilarity and jabs for friends who love a  good roasting !

Do You Focus On Age In A Birthday Speech?

You certainly can focus on age in a birthday speech, but you don’t have to. If the person’s age seems essential to the angle you are taking in your remarks, mention it. However, you don’t need to.

BIrthday speech examples - no need to mention age

What Do You Include In Speeches For Milestone Birthdays?

  • 16th Birthday:  The 16th birthday , called a sweet sixteen for girls, should include something about the guest of honor practically being an adult.
  • 18th Birthday:  As the official entry into adulthood in many countries, the 18th birthday is a big one. Make sure to recognize this in any birthday speech.
  • 21st Birthday:  Even though people can legally drink alcohol at much younger ages in other countries, in the United States, this is the magic number for being able to drink. For this reason, this birthday is often accompanied by a party. A parent often will recognize that fact in a speech or toast .
  • 30th Birthday:  Also called the “dirty thirty,” this is a fun milestone birthday to celebrate what many see as the end of their youth. Speeches and toasts for this birthday typically include birthday quotes about getting older and recognition of the next stage of life. You certainly can use some funny one-liner jokes, quotes, or tidbits.
  • 40th Birthday:  Middle age is between 40 and 50, so this birthday is often a sensitive one, especially for women. It is always appropriate to wish the birthday person a long life and health. If you know the person well enough to be sure they will handle gentle ribbing well, you could make some “getting old” jokes in your speech.
  • 50th Birthday:  When giving a 50th birthday speech, people commonly start to make “old fart” jokes and give gag birthday gifts. Everything “over the hill” is appropriate for celebrating a loved one’s “Happy 50th birthday.”
  • 60th Birthday:  Wishing someone good health and happiness as they turn 60 are relevant topics for this birthday speech. Another birthday where people often joke about how old the person is, don’t be surprised if the birthday cake’s theme is “older than dirt.” When giving a speech at a milestone birthday for someone older, take your cues from others. If the guest of honor is struggling with getting older or in poor health, give a touching speech rather than one full of jokes.
  •   100th Birthday:  Living this long is a very big deal, and a 100th birthday is likely to be met with many people who want to say a few words. At this age, leave all jokes aside. Celebrate the centenarian’s life with birthday quotes and stories of special places and events you have seen together.

Birthday Speech Examples For Yourself

Here’s to another year of fun, growth, and creating more memories together. Cheers to all of you, and happy birthday to me!”

Let’s make this year even better. Here’s to good times, great friends, and celebrating every little victory. Cheers to another fabulous year, and happy birthday to me!”

Examples Of Funny Birthday Speeches

Self-deprecating humor.

“They say you don’t truly appreciate your youth until it’s gone. Well, guess what? I’m here to appreciate my ever-lasting youth… which everyone keeps mistaking for middle age!”

“They say you don’t get older, you just level up in life. Well, consider me a level-grinding champion because another year has flown by! But hey, at least the high score for wrinkles keeps getting higher!”

Poking Fun At The Guest Of Honor’s Age

“I wasn’t sure what kind of cake to get [Name] this year.  One with a ton of candles seemed a bit of a fire hazard, so I went with [playful suggestion of a much smaller cake or alternative dessert].  But hey, at least you’re getting closer to unlocking the senior discounts, right?”

“Happy Birthday to [Name]! They may not be jumping hurdles these days, but hey, at least they can still appreciate a good nap. Here’s to celebrating another year of wisdom, experience, and strategically placed furniture for optimal lounging!”

Embarrassing Story

“Happy Birthday, [Name]! They may be a culinary genius now, but there was definitely that time you tried to make [insert dish] for the family dinner, and it ended up looking (and smelling) like something out of a science experiment. Let’s just say takeout saved the day! But hey, at least you learned a valuable lesson in the kitchen (and maybe a newfound respect for following recipes).”

Funny Anecdote About The Gift

“Hi everyone! We’re all here to celebrate [Name]’s birthday, and we all know that [Name] loves a good lazy day. So, we thought, why not embrace that passion to the fullest? Introducing the Ultimate Lazy Day Kit! Inside, you’ll find a pair of the fluffiest socks known to humankind, a blanket that feels like a hug from a cloud, and a selection of snacks that require zero effort to consume.

Oh, and the pièce de résistance: a remote control holder so you never have to get up to look for it again. Because, let’s be honest, if anyone deserves to chill in maximum comfort, it’s you, [Name].

Playful Exaggeration

“ Today, we gather to celebrate [Name], our very own tech wizard. If your computer crashes, your phone dies, or your Wi-Fi goes down, [Name] is the first person we call. It’s like they were born with a microchip in their brain.

So, to make sure you stay at the top of your game, we’ve got you the latest gadgetry and a year’s subscription to ‘Tech Wizard Monthly.’ [Name], your ability to fix anything with a screen is nothing short of magical, and we can’t wait to see what tech sorcery you perform next. Happy Birthday, and may your gadgets always be cutting-edge!”

Remember that any stories you choose to tell should highlight the guest of honor’s good qualities, even if they’re embarrassing. You should ideally get their permission to tell the story beforehand. Remember to keep it lighthearted and avoid anything that could be hurtful.

How Do You Say Thank You For A Birthday Speech?

As the guest of honor, you will be expected to say a few words at your own birthday celebration . Acknowledging those who have shared kind words and stories about you is appropriate. This does not have to be long. You can say,  “I appreciate everyone for coming to share in my special day, especially everyone who said such lovely things about me. Thank you all for coming.”

You should also acknowledge whoever hosted the party. For example,  “Thank you to my husband and best friend for throwing this lovely surprise party for me. I appreciate all the work that went into planning every detail, from the venue to the food to everyone who spoke. I appreciate you all.”

Last updated on August 11, 2023 - © Free-Sample-Letter.com

The 40th, 50th, and 60th Birthdays: A Time of Reflection and Celebration

Life's milestone birthdays , namely the 40th, 50th, and 60th, are special occasions that symbolize more than just the passing of time. They are gateways to new chapters, opportunities to pause and reflect on the paths we've taken, the challenges we've overcome, and the dreams we've fulfilled. As we reach these significant ages, we don't merely celebrate the years that have gone by; we rejoice in the wisdom, resilience, and sense of purpose that have grown within us.

The 40th birthday heralds a season of maturity, self-confidence, and often, a renewed pursuit of passions and goals. The 50th birthday invites us to take stock of our accomplishments, cherish the relationships we've nurtured, and seek new adventures with the wisdom of experience. The 60th birthday marks a graceful transition into a time of reflection, fulfillment, and anticipation of the richness that the coming years may bring.

Friends, family, and loved ones often join us in commemorating these landmark birthdays. Whether it's an intimate dinner with close family, a lively party with friends, or a soul-searching retreat to a favorite place, the celebration of these milestones is as unique as the individual whose life we're honoring.

These ages are not just numbers; they're badges of life's journey, tangible proof of growth, transformation, and the pursuit of dreams. They remind us to embrace the present, honor the past, and boldly step into the uncharted future that beckons us with promise and potential. Whether you're throwing a vibrant bash or indulging in quiet contemplation, the 40th, 50th, and 60th birthdays are profound moments to celebrate the beautiful complexity of life and the exciting possibilities that still await.

Crafting a 40-60th Birthday Speech: Our Writing Tips

Creating a speech for a 40th, 50th or 60th birthday celebration is a delightful opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and inspire. Here are some tailored tips and thoughtful strategies to help you craft a memorable toast for these milestone occasions:

Choose Your Theme Thoughtfully

Consider the tone and direction you want your speech to take. Will you journey through life's chapters, highlighting key memories and lessons, or focus on celebrating achievements and envisioning the future? Your theme sets the stage for your speech, so select one that resonates with your audience and your own personal journey.

Personalize with Anecdotes and Stories

Engage your audience by sharing unique memories, humorous encounters, or touching moments from different stages of life. Whether it's a childhood adventure, a professional milestone, or a cherished friendship, these personal touches add warmth and authenticity to your speech.

Balance Humor with Sensitivity

Humor can add a delightful spark to your speech but wield it with care. Celebrate life's quirks and joys without crossing lines that might make guests uncomfortable. A gentle, self-deprecating humor often works well, as it creates a connection without alienating anyone.

Maintain Focus and Brevity

While it's tempting to cover every significant life event, a concise and focused speech often leaves a more lasting impression. Aim for 5-10 minutes, structuring your speech in a way that flows smoothly and keeps your audience engaged.

End with Gratitude and Inspiration

Conclude your speech by expressing heartfelt appreciation to those who have enriched your life. Share reflections or wisdom that encourages others to cherish life's journey. A well-chosen ending resonates with listeners and adds a poignant touch to the celebration.

Rehearse with Intention

Familiarize yourself with your speech through repeated practice. Consider rehearsing in front of a trusted friend or family member who can provide feedback. Confidence in delivery can turn a good speech into an unforgettable one.

Consider the Audience

Remember who you are speaking to. Customize your speech to appeal to your guests, considering their relationship to you and what would make the celebration meaningful for everyone.

Embrace Authenticity

Celebrating 40-60 Years of Life: A Sample of Toast to Say on Birthday's

Embracing the milestone: a jubilant reflection on turning 50.

Hey everyone!

I'd like to say a few words....it's not everyday that we turn 50 after all!

First off, I would like to thank everyone for coming today to celebrate this special occasion with me. It is and will remain a milestone for me in my life and what better way to remember it than with all of you here with me.

50 years old...sounds like quite a feat, especially as I hear myself say it. Life is interesting, we don't feel the years pass us by, we feel as young as we did in our 20's...sometimes act that way and yet....people think we should "act our age" !....

But why I say!! Why when we feel like a young spring chicken, full of energy as always, enjoying every day for the challenges it brings as well as the moments full of love and happiness like this one (tonight/today).

All of you hear (tonight/today) with me are precious for me and one that without you all would not have been a birthday worth celebrating like this!

I look here at you all, all of you here for me...and the words become hard to voice...

Many of you, we go way back....some of you here tonight we have been friends for (20) years or more, others, you are some of what we "old folks" might call "newer friends", ...but not any less important to me!

You newer friends that are here, when we met we just seemed to get along as if we had known each other for at least 20 years anyways so you see...there really is not differentiation!

You are all special to me and I am so happy that you are all here with me to celebrate me getting older! I need all the help I can get!!

Thank you everyone!

Cherishing Five Decades: A Grateful Celebration of Life at 50

Hello, everyone!

I stand before you today on a remarkable occasion, one that happens only once: my 50th birthday. A day filled with reflection, celebration, and perhaps a hint of disbelief!

First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for being here. You've not only gathered to mark a milestone in my life but have enriched the journey that brought me to this day. Your presence here is the greatest gift I could ask for.

Turning 50, as I've discovered, is less about "getting old" and more about embracing the wisdom and joy that comes with time. Yes, it might sound like quite an accomplishment, but I don't feel any older, nor do I wish to "act my age"! After all, age is but a number, and I still feel the vibrant energy of my younger self, ready to dance the night away.

Tonight, I look around this room and see faces that have been a part of my life for decades, and others that have recently joined this incredible journey. Each one of you holds a special place in my heart, whether we've shared (20) years of friendship or just a few unforgettable moments.

To my lifelong friends, thank you for standing by me, growing with me, and enduring every up and down. Our shared memories are the threads that weave the fabric of my life.

To my newer friends, you've brought fresh perspectives, laughter, and joy into my world. Our connection feels timeless, as though we've known each other forever.

As I stand at this unique crossroads, looking back at the road I've traveled and forward to new adventures, I am filled with gratitude for every challenge and triumph, every tear and laughter. Each has shaped me, taught me, and prepared me for the years ahead.

So here's to being 50, to embracing life with all its beautiful complexity, to cherishing old friendships, and welcoming new ones. Here's to us, to love, to laughter, and to many more years of making memories together.

Thank you, everyone, for making this day unforgettable! Let's celebrate!

40th Birthday Speech for a Spouse or Partner

Good evening everyone,

I stand before you not just as the husband/wife/partner of the birthday person, but as their most ardent admirer, greatest supporter, and of course, the person who has borne witness to the quirks, follies, and those idiosyncrasies that make them, well, unique.

When [Partner's Name] turned 20, they were vibrant, adventurous, and fearless. At 30, wise, focused, and still a bit reckless. Now, at the grand age of 40, what are they? Absolutely fabulous, and somehow, more adventurous than ever!

40 years, ladies and gentlemen. That's the time it took for [Partner's Name] to perfect that secret family recipe, finally agree that my favorite TV show might be worth watching, and accept that no, the socks don't magically end up in the laundry basket. And oh, what a glorious 40 years it has been!

It's the years of shared glances, understanding smiles, crazy vacations, unexpected dance-offs in the living room, and those serene moments when a simple hug would be worth a thousand words.

But let's talk about achievements! [Partner's Name] isn't just a fantastic spouse; they're a brilliant [profession], an incredible parent, and the person who can always, always find the car keys, no matter where I've misplaced them.

Do you want to know the secret of their success at 40? They've discovered that age really is just a number. It's the spirit, the joy, the zest for life that really counts. And trust me, they've got that in spades.

So here's to [Partner's Name], the love of my life. To the one who laughs at my jokes, listens to my stories, and makes every single day a bit brighter just by being in it.

Happy 40th, my love! May we have many more dance-offs, many more shared sunsets, and of course, many more years of never really acting our age.

Cheers, everyone! Thank you for being a part of this wonderful celebration.

60th Birthday Speech for a Parent: A Tribute from a Child

Ladies and Gentlemen, family and friends,

Today we gather to celebrate not just a birthday, but a life filled with wisdom, love, and endless support. Today, we honor my parent as they reach the beautiful age of 60, a milestone that's as significant as it is rich in memories and experiences.

As I stand here, memories of my childhood flood my mind, memories that are wrapped in the warmth and comfort of my parent's embrace. From teaching me to ride a bike to guiding me through the complex labyrinth of life, [Parent's Name] has been my unwavering compass.

In my parent's eyes, I saw the spark of endless possibilities, a belief that I could achieve anything, be anyone. They taught me that failure is not the opposite of success; it's a stepping stone towards it. Through their actions, their patience, and their tireless faith, they sculpted not just my life, but the lives of everyone they touched.

60 years is a long time, but for my parent, it seems to have been a journey filled with joy, learning, and constant growth. They've been a loving spouse, a doting parent, a caring friend, and a wise mentor.

I've learned kindness from their compassion, wisdom from their words, and strength from their character. I've seen them face challenges with grace and celebrate victories with humility. They've shown me that love isn't just a word; it's a series of deliberate actions.

But let's not forget the fun times! Whether it was family vacations, weekend outings, or simply playing games in the living room, [Parent's Name] always knew how to bring laughter and joy into our lives.

As we celebrate these wonderful 60 years, I want to say, "Thank you." Thank you for the stories, the lessons, the hugs, and the unwavering love. Thank you for being my parent.

Happy 60th birthday, [Parent's Name]. May this new chapter be filled with health, happiness, and continued inspiration.

Here's to you, and here's to a lifetime of memories that we've shared and many more that we will create together.

Speech for a Long-Time Friend: Reflecting on a Friendship Spanning Decades

Ladies and Gentlemen, friends, family, and most importantly, my dear friend [Friend's Name],

Today, I have the distinct honor of standing before you to celebrate the life and the heart of someone who has not only been a friend but a true companion for many decades. As we raise our glasses to toast [Friend's Name]'s 50th/60th birthday, we also salute a friendship that has withstood the test of time.

When I look back on the tapestry of our shared memories, I'm transported to a place where time stands still. A place filled with laughter, adventures, dreams, and sometimes tears. From the days of youthful exuberance to the wisdom of maturity, our friendship has been a constant, a beacon in the storm, a source of unending joy.

[Friend's Name], you have been there in the best and worst of times. Through triumphs and tribulations, celebrations and sorrows, we've navigated life's complex journey hand in hand. Our bond is not just a friendship; it's a shared life, a shared history.

You have been the confidante who listened without judgment, the cheerleader who believed in me even when I didn't, the guide who led me when I was lost. You've been a sibling in all but blood.

We've created not only memories but also traditions. The way we celebrate our victories, the way we console each other in defeats, our favorite jokes that never grow old, and our understanding of each other's quirks - these are the threads that knit our unique friendship tapestry.

But most importantly, we've grown together. We've shaped each other's lives, influenced each other's characters, and enriched each other's hearts. You've taught me that true friendship isn't about being inseparable; it's about being separated and knowing nothing will change.

As we gather to celebrate your 50th/60th year, I look forward to many more years of laughter, late-night talks, shared dreams, and endless support. I look forward to growing old together as friends who know that age is merely a number, and true friendship is timeless.

Happy birthday, dear friend. Here's to the past that has shaped us, the present that unites us, and the future that awaits us.

Cheers to you, [Friend's Name], and to a friendship that will last forever.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Humorous Speech on Aging: A Light-hearted Take on the Realities of Growing Older

Ladies and Gentlemen, and [Celebrant's Name],

Let me just start by saying, age is just a number. Unfortunately, in this case, that number is alarmingly close to a three-digit figure, but who's counting?

Yes, friends, we're here to celebrate a birthday. And not just any birthday. It's [Celebrant's Name]'s big one, a momentous occasion that reminds us all that growing older isn't for sissies.

They say that 60 is the new 40, and 50 is the new 30. By that math, [Celebrant's Name], you're practically a teenager, so don't be surprised if we ground you for staying out too late tonight.

Now, let's talk about the gifts of aging. And no, I'm not referring to those discount coupons for the early bird special at the local diner.

First and foremost, let's embrace those silver strands of wisdom. Who needs hair dye when your natural highlights come free of charge? That's not gray; it's "platinum experience."

Then there's the memory. They say it's the first thing to go, but what were we talking about again?

Ah yes, the "Golden Years." They're golden for a reason. You can finally chase your dreams, whether it's becoming a rockstar, a famous painter, or just the person who yells at those darn kids to get off your lawn.

You might notice that things start to creak and groan a little more, but don't worry, that's not the house settling, that's just your joints joining the conversation.

They also say that with age comes wisdom. I'm still waiting for that to kick in, but I'm assured it's any day now. In the meantime, [Celebrant's Name], your ability to pretend you know what you're talking about has never been sharper.

All joking aside, growing older has its privileges. You've gathered a lifetime of memories, friendships, experiences, and yes, a few laugh lines. But those lines are a roadmap to a life well-lived, a life full of joy and love.

So here's to you, [Celebrant's Name], for leading the way with style, grace, and a wink in your eye. May your coming years be filled with laughter, love, and a few more good-natured jokes at your expense.

Happy birthday, my friend. May your wit stay as sharp as your memory is fuzzy, and may you continue to age like fine wine. Or at least like a cheese that gets better with time.

Humorous birthday toasts and quotes

Humorous birthday toasts and quotes give us a chance to laugh at the trials and tribulations of maturity.  After all, advancing birthdays are much better than the alternative.

Cupcakes with candles spelling out Happy Birthday on them.

If there's a significant birthday in your future  -- a number that ends with a zero or a five --  celebrate with guests by offering a funny birthday toast to yourself. After all, people love speakers who don't take themselves so seriously.  And if you're less than thrilled about getting another year older, remember what the late great comedian George Burns once quipped:

There's an old saying, "Life begins at 40." That's ridiculous. Life begins every morning when you wake up.

Guy with funny birthday hat and blower thing who is celebrating someone's birthday.

There are hundreds of humorous birthday toasts and quotes you can adapt. . You've no doubt heard some of these funny birthday sayings:

    Lordy Lordy -- Look who's 40     Isn't it nifty--Fred has turned 50.

Humorous birthday toasts adn quotes: Adult birthdays through the decades

We could certainly slow down the aging process if it had to work its way through Congress.      -- Will Rogers

Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you.      -- Winston Churchill

Maybe it's true that life begins at 60 . . . but everything else begins to wear out, fall out or spread out.      -- Phyllis Diller

By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere.      -- Billy Crystal

The cardiologist's diet: if it tastes good, spit it out!

To 60 years and Social Security Guess it's time to show some maturity.

70 years and he's going strong He's still a hunk. . .perhaps not for long.

Today 50 is the new 35 and 80 is the new 60. Here's to one who does not look or act their age!

Happy birthday! Isn't it great to reach the stage of maturity when someone says, "You look good" and then adds "for your age."

Optimists drink from a glass half full; pessimists from a glass half empty. But since it's your birthday, drink as many glasses as you want.

Now you're at an age where you don't take yourself so seriously. So laugh at yourself . . . your kids do it all the time.

Another year older and wiser and bolder. Now let us give thanks for those blessings we shoulder.

It's a scientific fact that people who have more birthdays live longer.

What goes up but never comes down?  Your age.

Remember when you were 8 and couldn't wait to become a teenager? Then you wanted to be five years older and reach 18. . . the next goal was 21 and you had the world at your fingertips. But what happened at 30? Okay . . . you still looked 22.  Then at 40, not so much. And there's no need to go further. Funny how our desire to age is inversely proportional to the years since our birth.

Humorous story for a birthday speech to make people laugh

Your duck is dead.

Anyone who has had any tests at the doctor's office will probably enjoy this story . . .

Vet with dead duck - AI generated

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away." The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet.

"How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.  The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$250!" she cried, "$250 just to tell me my duck is dead!"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $25, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $250."

Welcome Speech Ideas for a Class Reunion

Press conference

A reunion speech offers a chance to elicit a lot of laughs and smiles, delving back through the decades to the school years classmates shared. Use local history and school history in the speech to reminisce with the classmates, who will enjoy remembering where they came from, as you welcome and thank participants and special guests for coming to the event.

The Class at That Time in History

Video of the Day

When these classmates graduated from high school or college years ago, they wore different clothes, styled their hair differently and might have had funny nicknames. Talk about what was happening at that time in history, such as current events during the graduation year, or local government buildings, stores and shops that have since been demolished or changed. Mention favorite hangout spots or points of particular interest that classmates may have forgotten about.

The Class at School

Before the speech, find the yearbooks from those four years of high school and write a speech based on school life. Take the classmates back in time and mention the politics, friendships and society that occurred at school. Quote the funniest or sweetest senior quotes and get comments from the audience on whether the quotes still apply. If the seniors were assigned superlatives in the yearbook (cutest couple, funniest person, kindest person), bring up some of these during the speech and call the people by name.

The Class Then to Now

Talk about the changes and wisdom that the classmates have experienced through the years; whatever mistakes or catastrophes happened, they made each individual who they are today. Read aloud excerpts from the old school newspapers (if possible) and remind the audience how young they were then, and what has since happened in the world to change how they view things, as well as ways in which the local area and the world have changed.

The Class Interactive

Before the reunion, distribute a questionnaire through mail or email to all of the classmates of that year. Include questions such as: number of children or grandchildren, current hobbies, marital status, current job, residence and number of countries visited over the years. During the opening speech, share with the class who has been married the longest, who has the most grandchildren, who has traveled the farthest, and other interesting or unusual facts -- the more unusual or notable, the better.

Gilman Scholarship increases study abroad opportunities for record number of Roadrunners

Maria Vasquez stands in front of the Milan Cathedral. Vasquez will spend time in Italy as part of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.

JUNE 28, 2024 — The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is helping a record number of UTSA recipients enjoy the transformative benefits of a semester abroad. This includes senior Brooke Ellerbe , who will study abroad in South Africa this summer. The biology major and UTSA Honors College student will get to explore how the country’s complex history has shaped its health care system.

“I never had the opportunity to travel abroad before,” said Ellerbe. “I am most excited about the chance to immerse myself in the health care system of South Africa while also embracing the country’s rich cultural heritage. It’s an unparalleled educational opportunity.”

Ellerbe is one of 29 UTSA students receiving a Gilman Scholarship this year. This cohort, the largest class of UTSA Gilman scholars to date, will travel abroad this summer and during the 2024–2025 academic year. In total, the program awarded nearly $100,000 to fund study abroad trips for the selected students, who will travel to countries in Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe.

The U.S. Department of State administers the Gilman Scholarship to increase global learning opportunities for undergraduate students across the country. The program awards scholarships to those who may not have otherwise studied abroad due to financial constraints, opening the door for students from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Out of this year’s 29 scholarship recipients, eight, including Ellerbe, are UTSA Honors College students and 12 are participating in a UTSA faculty-led study abroad program. The latter is ideal for students who are first-time international travelers. Through faculty-led programs, these students travel with fellow Roadrunners, and they attend classes taught in English. Additionally, UTSA arranges accommodations and travel within each country of study.

Four of the faculty-led students will travel to Dresden, Germany, this summer with Devon Donohue-Bergeler , a professor of instruction in the UTSA Department of Modern Languages and Literatures . Donohue-Bergeler will lead a month-long program called “The Dresden Experience,” where students will immerse themselves in German life and culture through a combination of excursions, personal reflections and individual projects tailored to each student’s area of study.

The 2024–2025 UTSA Gilman Scholars are anticipated to study in the following countries this summer and through spring 2025.

The scholarship has two application cycles each academic year, in October and March. Up to $5,000 is awarded per student, with an additional $3,000 available to those studying in a country that speaks a critical need language like Japanese, Russian or Arabic.

Studying away or abroad provides countless benefits for students and is a key part of the university’s Classroom to Career Initiative . International travel promotes students’ academic and holistic development by broadening their horizons, introducing them to new perspectives and cultures, and expanding their networks. By teaching vital skills that translate outside of the classroom, these experiential learning opportunities help prepare Roadrunners who are equipped for successful careers in an increasingly global society.

The UTSA Office of Nationally Competitive Awards helps students of all levels and backgrounds find and apply for awards to fund these global experiences and other opportunities like research, service learning projects and graduate study.

The 4 best of 2024: commencement wisdom for the rest of us.

This year’s commencement speeches offer a gold mine of career insights and reflections on the ... [+] current moment.

The class of 2024 has been through the mill. The pandemic disrupted their transition from high school to college and now they face a tough job market . Many graduates will end up underemployed: up to 40% are predicted to work in jobs that don't require their degrees. In the midst of all this, how many will have heard, let alone processed, the messages of their commencement speakers?

But the rest of us can–and should. Commencement speeches may focus on the young, but they also hold a treasure trove of inspiring insights no matter how long ago you graduated. The best commencement speeches offer a new perspective on a familiar idea: keeping your head above the fray as you make your way in a rapidly changing world. This advice appeals to the beginner in each of us. As even the most seasoned workers adjust to disruptive technologies like AI, it feels like every day is a first. We are all commencing something.

The Buddhist “beginner’s mind” invites us to meet new challenges with openness and curiosity, to let go of firmly held beliefs and explore new ideas. A beginner's mind is the ultimate breather, clearing the cobwebs when we feel trapped by the status quo . This year’s crop of speeches offers a gold mine of career insights and trenchant reflections on the current moment. Here are four worth watching (and pondering).

Take Nothing At Face Value

In her speech at Harvard, Nobel Prize winning journalist Maria Ressa made an impassioned plea for protecting the integrity of information to safeguard a healthy society. Relating her story as a journalist in a repressive regime, her message is crystal clear: the current moment requires our best critical thinking to combat the polarization caused by campaigns of misinformation. “Without facts,” she said, “you can’t have truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust. And without these three, we have no shared reality, no rule of law and no democracy.” This is a fight, Ressa cautions, in which we are all foot soldiers. It starts with how we consume information every day. Because technology delivers so much of the data you need at work, increase your vigilance, ask extra questions and parse out the truth from the lies. Take nothing at face value and be an active skeptic. Poke holes in what you read and hear, scrutinize the sources and their intentions. AI may make things faster and easier, but it doesn’t necessarily make them right. Complacency is the enemy of truth.

Focus On One Point At A Time

Dartmouth hosted Roger Federer , widely considered the greatest tennis player of all time. Although he won 80% of his matches across his brilliant career, Federer told the graduates that he won only 54% of the points. “Even top-ranked tennis players win barely more than half of the points they play.” His takeaway applies to far more than tennis. With such a significant chance of losing any single point, you learn to let go of each point once it’s played. After all, it’s just a point. “This mindset is really crucial,” he added, “because it frees you to fully commit to the next point and the next point after that, with intensity, clarity, and focus.” When you face an overwhelming list of things to do, imagine that each task is just a point. Focus on one at a time– with all the energy you can muster–and then move on when you’re done. The most effective people, Federer asserts, are not the ones that win every point, but those who learn from their losses, let go of disappointment and persevere to win the next one.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, share stories to deepen understanding.

It’s little surprise that master storyteller and documentarian Ken Burns spoke to the Brandeis University class about the power of story. History, he argues, reveals that human nature never changes. We muster our strengths in the face of hardship, but we are just as prone to be felled by our weaknesses: selfishness, greed, and a pernicious tendency toward binary thinking–us and them, right and wrong. But stories hold a unique power to cut through dialectical thinking, to help us balance personal rights with collective responsibility by persuading us to see things from a different vantage point. Stories, past and present, awaken the “kinship of the soul,” enabling us to see ourselves, understand others and narrow the gaps of perceived difference. These stories don’t have to be monumental. Your colleague’s story is just as powerful as a story from history or literature. Pause to tell your story, to ask someone else to tell theirs. There are no little stories, only windows into shared understanding.

Don’t Lose Your Sense Of Humor

In a punchy address, comedian and actor Jerry Seinfeld urged the graduates at Duke University to let go of finding the perfect job, the “one great thing.” It’s not about uncovering your passion, he suggested, but awakening your fascination with the effort of learning something new. Because the magic is in the journey of becoming. You know you're on the right journey when you love the good parts but don’t mind the bad too much. The highlight of his quirky speech clearly comes from his heart: don’t lose your sense of humor. Because the world is a mess, he says, humor is the “survival-essential quality” you need, the “Stanley water bottle for the brutal long hike of life.” In a world that continues to dish out a never-ending stream of confusion, laughing alleviates stress and improves mental health. Clear-headed–and funny–wisdom for unusual times.

The commencement tradition dates back to the Middle Ages as a rite of passage for graduating students. But its power endures. Adapting to AI and rapidly changing workplaces can make even the most seasoned among us feel as green as new graduates. And that’s not a bad thing in a world where lifelong learning is the new degree requirement for every job. Commencement speeches are a rich and deep reminder that the journey of becoming is never over. And it's never too late to begin again and again.

'Sense of shock': Democrats melt down over Joe Biden's debate disaster

good 50th speech

WASHINGTON − Democrats and other opponents of Donald Trump melted down as President Joe Biden struggled during Thursday' s debate, with some suggesting he should bow out to allow another Democrat to run instead.

Biden's voice was hoarse and raspy from the start. He stumbled over words and had to correct himself with numbers. He was sometimes hard to follow. On one occasion , the president appeared to lose his train of thought, stopped speaking and concluded − confusingly − with the line, "we finally beat Medicare."

"That's a good man. He loves his country. He's doing the best that he can," said Van Jones, a Democratic political analyst for CNN. "But he had a test to meet tonight to restore confidence in the country and of the base, and he failed to do that."

Jones added: "We're still far from our convention. And there is time for this party to figure out a different way forward if he will allow us to do that."

Biden, 81, entered the debate badly needing to energize his campaign, unite his party and answer skepticism about his age and ability to serve another term. Although he improved during the debate after an especially rocky start, Biden did not silence the concerns.

One House Democrat, who spoke to USA TODAY on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly, described the debate as a "disaster."

"Trump lied and Biden played all defense," the Democrat said.

Another former Democratic member of Congress, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity, said a conversation needs to happen privately with Biden about allowing someone else to run as the Democratic nominee. The lawmaker said he turned off the debate after the first hour because he couldn't stand watching Biden not stand up to Trump.

“It's not enough to be decent and honest and right on the issues," the Democrat said. "You have to be able to persuade, to defend your values forcefully and clearly, to command respect and to be able to take on liars and bullies like Trump to be the leader of this country."

Biden's struggles made him lack forceful responses to Trump's repeated attacks and his downplaying of his role surrounding the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. While Trump talked, Biden often looked his way with a blank stare and his mouth open.

David Axelrod, a former adviser to President Barack Obama , said there was a "sense of shock" with how poorly Biden started the debate.

"He seemed a little disoriented. He did get stronger as the debate went on," Axelrod said on CNN. "But by that time, I think the panic had set in. And I think you're going to hear discussions that − I don't know will lead to anything − but there is going to be discussions about whether he should continue."

Maria Shriver, former first lady of California, a Biden supporter and member of the famed Democratic Kennedy family, shard her concerns in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"I love Joe Biden. I know he’s a good man. I know his heart is good. I know he’s dedicated to our country and is surrounded by good people. Tonight was heartbreaking in many ways," Shriver wrote. "This is a big political moment. There’s panic in the Democratic party. It’s going to be a long night."

Addressing Democratic concerns, a Biden campaign adviser told USA TODAY: "President Biden is the only person who has ever beaten Donald Trump. He will do it again. Donald Trump did not give voters any reason to vote for him tonight. On the issues, the American people are with Joe Biden."

Vice President Kamala Harris also defended Biden's performance.

"What we saw tonight is the president making a very clear contrast with Donald Trump on all of the issues that matter to the American people," Harris said. "Yes, there was a slow start but it was a strong finish.

"Listen, people can debate on style points, but ultimately this election and who is the president of the United States has to be about substance − and the contrast is clear," Harris said.

Sen. Rafael Warnock, D-Ga., when asked whether he was concerned about Biden's chances in November, responded: “I would be concerned if the president didn’t have a record to run on."

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, in an interview on MSNBC, called the Democratic criticism of Biden's performance "unhelpful" and "unnecessary."

"We've got to go in and got to keep our head high, and we've got to have the back of this president. You don't turn your back because of one performance. What kind of party does that? He's been a master class."

Others disagreed.

"Guys, the Dems should nominate someone else - before it’s too late," businessman Andrew Yang, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination in 2020 and backed Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., in the Democratic primary this year. He added the hashtag "#swapJoeout."

Trump seemed to sense Biden's difficulties. "I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence," Trump said during one exchange on immigration during the debate. "And I don't think he knows what he said either."

"Sorry, I’m voting for President Biden but a disaster so far," Republican strategist Mike Murphy, a Trump critic, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, shortly into the debate. "On a 1 to 10 point scale − if this continues − the panic explosion inside the Democratic Party will hit 28 tomorrow."

Elise Jordan, an MSNBC contributor and an aide in President George W. Bush's administration, said on X, "If President Biden cares about preserving American democracy, he should drop out of the election."

Geoff Garin, a Biden pollster, downplayed the Democratic unrest , however. "The freak out over the debate is way overwrought," he said in a post on X. "Biden got off to a slow start but he had a strong finish. Trump was increasing incoherent and deranged as the debate went on, and Trump's extremism was on full display."

Garin added: "At the end of the day Joe Biden will win because he builds America up while Donald Trump consistently tears it down."

50th Anniversary Toast

A sample golden wedding anniversary speech

Love for all seasons

By:  Susan Dugdale

 - a sample 50th anniversary toast or golden wedding anniversary speech, from a husband, Mark, to his wife, Sarah.

Please use your imagination as you read

As you read this 50th anniversary toast imagine it being said aloud.

See in your mind a room full of family and friends  gathered together to witness and celebrate 50 years of living together. These people all know about the good and the not so good times this couple have experienced and they'll love remembering them.

(For the record, my husband rode a motorbike when we were young and yes, he did once bring me a bunch of white roadside daisies minus their heads! That part of the speech is all true. ☺)

Mark's golden (50th) wedding anniversary speech

"After 50 years Sarah knows I not good at romance or speaking about love. Those kind of words always got tangled on my tongue and caught between my teeth. They never did come out right, not as I intended anyway. Even when I proposed, it came out all wrong.

But she knew what I meant, thank goodness.

(Here's a tip for all you guys; getting her a bunch of flowers is great. She'll love it.)

Giving her a bunch of stalks though, that takes a special girl to understand. And that's what Sarah did. She knew from the moment I handed them over it was a big moment.

Yep, I was shuffling those words around my mouth trying to get the four of them lined up straight for an easy exit - you, marry, will and me .

Meanwhile the stalks were doing the talking. I think it was the shredded paper around them that clinched it. That and I'd never done flowers, (stalks), before.

80 miles an hour on a motorbike getting from the florist to her and they'd lost their heads. I hadn't noticed until I saw them in her hands.

It's a long time since then. She and I we've been around the block a bit with some great detours and a cul-de-sac or two along the way. It's the cul-de-sacs, the blind alleys, that really let you know who you're with and what they're made of.

Sarah, you've been there when it would have seemed the most understandable thing to walk away. Being in love is good but it don't pay the bills. You all know what I'm talking about.

We put in some lean years when we were young. There were times when finding a 10 cent coin that had slipped down the back of the sofa made all the difference.

Do you remember the promise we made each other?

I do. It was that no matter how hard it was to balance all the demands life seemed to throw at us we would not fall for that ultimate con trick -  ' that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence'.

For the record I know I tested it. I opened a gate in it a couple of times. But she's a stubborn woman and she refused to go through.

I love her for that; for our family and I love it for me. Her strength, her tenacity has made me a better man. I cannot imagine my life without her in it and as she would say - 'just as well'!

Without her there would have been none of our children; Tim, Rachael and Mike and none of the shared joy they brought us.

There'd be no family holidays - winter ones in the mountains skiing where she frequently opted, aided by the laws of gravity, for the sit-down position or for the safer role, dispenser of arnica cream for bruises. Sarah never quite managed the coordination of skis.

Or our wonderful summer holidays spent walking - those we jointly loved.

Just as we've loved and shared the good times that only good friends can bring. It's great to see so many of you here today. Nick and Sally, Ralph and Dora. Elizabeth too, and this horde I am blessed with called family.

We feel humbled and proud to have you in our lives. Thank you for your support, for being part of the journey - way back where we began, now, and as we move forward.

Sarah, 50 years later and this time I'm not on a motorbike and the flowers still have their heads.

I want to be your friend forever and ever When the hills are all flat and the rivers run dry When the trees blossom in winter and the snow falls in summer, when heaven and earth mix - not till then will I part from you. To Sarah, to us both, our family, our friends and life!
