How to answer an essay question.

With the renewed interest in writing in all disciplines, more and more instructors are using the essay question.  To help my students get through the sometimes formidable task of composing an essay, I've compiled a list of helpful hints.  I usually hand it out the period before an essay test as I consider it part of my review (in nearly all my classes, I spend the period before the test reviewing format, past tests, points of emphasis, etc.).  While my students are taking the actual essay test, I allow them to keep this handout beside them as a constant guide.  For courses in which lots of writing is required, I give students the "tip sheet" the first day of class.

Some people believe that children should not be given homework everyday, while others believe that they must get homework everyday in order to be successful at school. Discuss both sides and give your opinion. (quite common question)
Some children receive almost no encouragement from their parents regarding their performance at school, while other children receive too much pressure from their over enthusiastic parents which can have a negative impact on the child. Why do you think some parents put too much pressure on their children to perform well at school? What do you think the role of a parent should be in their child’s education? (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021)
The role of education is to prepare children for the modern world. Schools should cut art and music out of the curriculum so that children can focus on useful subjects such as information technology. To what extent do you agree?

In nearly all science courses at university, there are significantly more male students than female students. What is the reason for this? What could be done to balance out the numbers?
Some people think that it is beneficial for old people to learn something new while others believe that once a person is past 65 years of age it is too late to learn. What is your opinion?
It is thought by some that a school teacher’s role is to motivate and inspire students. However, other people believe that a teacher’s primary role is to pass on knowledge. What do you think is the role of a teacher? (quite common question)
Fewer schools are requiring children to learn and improve their hand writing skills. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of this trend?

Reported essay questions are from students who have taken their IELTS test. That means questions may have appeared more frequently than have been reported. These questions may vary slightly in wording and focus from the original question. Also note that these questions could also appear in IELTS speaking part 3 which is another good reason to prepare all topics thoroughly.

There is currently a vast teacher shortage in this country, and one can easily see why. First and foremost, teaching is a tough job, and a high percentage of those who enter the profession eventually leave it to pursue other career opportunities. In her Why Great Teachers Quit: And How We Might Stop the Exodus , Katy Farber explored in depth the key reasons why teachers have left the field. Based on interviews with 70 public school teachers, those reasons were (1) the negative impact of standardized testing, (2) bad working conditions, (3) expanding expectations by school districts, (4) too much bureaucracy, (5) lack of respect and insufficient compensation, (6) difficult parents, (7) difficult administrators, and (8) difficult school boards.

Other studies have found that money, or rather the lack of it, is a big factor in why school districts are having major challenges in both the recruitment and retention of K-12 teachers; there is simply more money to be made in other, easier jobs. Not helping matters is that teachers lack the social status of other professionals, such as physicians, attorneys, or architects. Teachers have long struggled to be recognized as true professionals, but for various reasons, the occupation has never earned a good deal of veneration.

Given all that, why do people choose to be teachers?

In my own The American Teacher: A History , I discuss the significant psychic rewards that have been gained from spending much of one’s time in a classroom with young people. While it’s certainly nice to be able to pay one’s bills, most teachers have recognized that the benefits they gain from their job make them much richer than by receiving a fat paycheck. The knowledge that they are making the world a slightly better place by making young people a little wiser each day is more satisfying than the emotional rewards from being, say, an investment banker.

Indeed, a fair number of teachers who love their job have reported that they wouldn’t trade places with the richest person in the world. Much like those who have answered a spiritual call to become a preacher, priest, or rabbi, teachers have known going into the occupation that it wasn’t for the money. Some have actually turned down jobs in the business world that paid three or four times the wages, and they did not regret their decision (even if their clothes were a bit shabby, and they didn’t dine out a whole lot). Millionaires were a dime a dozen, such career teachers have felt, applying a different metric of success than the size of one’s bank account.

Teachers defining wealth in non-monetary terms has, in fact, been a running theme in the history of the field. Many of them have felt a deep sense of achievement, knowing they are helping to build responsible citizens. Teachers have also tended to believe that they are pursuing what might be the most fascinating work in the world based on the fact that no two pupils are exactly alike. Teachers love working with young people because each and every individual has unique interests and possesses unique talents; they feel privileged to have the opportunity to enable students to realize more of their full potential.

Like the decision to become a parent, perhaps, the joy and other powerful feelings that come from being a teacher defy rational analysis. Unlike most other occupations, there is an almost primal urge to teach, likely rooted in the universal humanistic instinct to pass knowledge on to a younger generation. Being a teacher is indeed an investment in the future (again, like having a child) and a mission that requires considerable dedication and commitment. Each student has a different personality and different learning needs, adding to the challenge and need for a teacher to be, in a sense, psychologically fluent.

Great teachers have understood that while imparting knowledge is important, setting students’ moral compass is the higher goal, as it elevates the lives of individuals and society as a whole. Teachers may not possess the status of lawyers, doctors, and hedge fund managers, but those serving in classrooms are engaged in a noble endeavor that we all should admire.

Can i use a.i. to grade my students’ papers.

The magazine’s Ethicist columnist on artificial intelligence platforms, and whether it’s hypocritical for teachers to use these tools while forbidding students from doing the same.

I am a junior-high-school English teacher. In the past school year, there has been a significant increase in students’ cheating on writing assignments by using artificial intelligence. Our department feels that 13-year-old students will only become better writers if they practice and learn from the successes and challenges that come with that.

Recently our department tasked students with writing an argumentative essay, an assignment we supported by breaking down the process into multiple steps. The exercise took several days of class time and homework to complete. All of our students signed a contract agreeing not to use A.I. assistance, and parents promised to support the agreement by monitoring their children when they worked at home. Yet many students still used A.I.

Some of our staff members uploaded their grading rubric into an A.I.-assisted platform, and students uploaded their essays for assessment. The program admittedly has some strengths. Most notable, it gives students writing feedback and the opportunity to edit their work before final submission. The papers are graded within minutes, and the teachers are able to transfer the A.I. grade into their roll book.

I find this to be hypocritical. I spend many hours grading my students’ essays. It’s tedious work, but I feel that it’s my responsibility — if a student makes an effort to complete the task, they should have my undivided attention during the assessment process.

Here’s where I struggle: Should I embrace new technology and use A.I.-assisted grading to save time and my sanity even though I forbid my students from using it? Is it unethical for teachers to ask students not to use A.I. to assist their writing but then allow an A.I. platform to grade their work? — Name Withheld

From the Ethicist:

You have a sound rationale for discouraging your students from using A.I. to draft their essays. As with many other skills, writing well and thinking clearly will improve through practice. By contrast, you already know how to grade papers; you don’t need the practice.

What matters is whether an A.I.-assisted platform can reliably appraise and diagnose your students’ writing, providing the explanation and guidance these students need to improve. In theory, such tools — and I see that there are several on the market, including from major educational publishers — have certain advantages. The hope is that they can grade without inconsistency, without getting tired, without being affected by the expectations that surely affect those of us who hand-grade student work.

I notice you haven’t raised concerns about whether the platform provides reliable assessments; you’ll have to decide if it does. (If it isn’t quite up to snuff, it might become so in a year or two, so your question will persist.) Provided the platform does a decent job of assessment, though, I don’t see why you must do it all yourself. You should review the A.I.-annotated versions of your students’ writing, check that you agree with the output, and make notes of issues to bring up in class. But time saved in evaluating the papers might be better spent on other things — and by “better,” I mean better for the students. There are pedagogical functions, after all, that only you can perform.

In sum: It’s not hypocritical to use A.I. yourself in a way that serves your students well, even as you insist that they don’t use it in a way that serves them badly.

The previous question was from a reader who asked about professional boundaries. He wrote: “I am a retired, married male psychiatrist. A divorced female former patient of mine contacted me recently, 45 years after her treatment ended. Would it be OK to correspond with her by email? Or is this a case of ‘once a patient, always a patient?’”

In his response, the Ethicist noted: “The relevant professional associations tend to have strictures that are specifically about sexual relationships with former patients. … In light of the potential for exploitation within the therapist-patient relationship, these rules are meant to maintain clear boundaries, protect patient welfare, uphold the integrity of the profession and eliminate any gray areas that could lead to ethical breaches. But though you do mention her marital status, and yours, you’re just asking about emailing her — about establishing friendly relations. The question for you is whether she might be harmed by this, whether whatever knowledge or trust gained from your professional relationship would shadow a personal one. Yes, almost half a century has elapsed since your professional relationship, but you still have to be confident that a correspondence with her clears this bar. If it does, you may email with a clear conscience.” ( Reread the full question and answer here. )

As always, I agree with the Ethicist. I would add that the letter writer’s former patient doesn’t realize that the therapist is actually two different people — the professional and the regular person underneath. Therapists portray their professional selves to their clients. The former client may be disappointed upon meeting the therapist outside of the professional context. Additionally, the feelings she has toward the therapist may be based on transference, and they would need to address that. — Annemarie

I am a clinical psychologist. While the Ethicist’s description of professional ethical boundaries is correct, there is more to the story, and I disagree with his conclusion. A very big question here is why this former patient contacted him after 45 years. That is a question that is best explored and answered within the context of a therapeutic relationship. He would be well- advised to respond in a kind and thoughtful way to convey the clear message that he is not available for ongoing communication, and he should suggest that she consult with another therapist if she feels that would be helpful. — Margaret

In my case, it was the therapist who reached out to me, seeking to establish a friendship several years after our sessions ended. I was surprised, but he shared that he had since experienced a similar personal tragedy to one I had explored with him in sessions. Since it had been several years since we saw each other professionally, I responded. There was never any hint of romantic or sexual interest. Still, as he continued to reach out to me, clearly desiring a friendship, it never felt right to me. It did feel unprofessional, as his knowledge of me was borne out of a relationship meant to be professional, never personal, as warmly as we might have felt during our sessions. I ended up being disappointed in him for seeking out my friendship. — Liam

I am a (semi)retired psychiatrist who has been practicing since 1974. In my opinion, “once a patient, always a patient” is correct. Establishing any type of personal relationship with a former patient could undo progress the patient may have made in treatment, and is a slippery slope toward blatantly unethical behavior. As psychiatrists, our responsibility is to work with patients in confronting and resolving issues that are preventing them from having a reality-based perception of their life. With such an outlook, they are more capable of establishing satisfying relationships with others. An ethical psychiatrist is not in the business of providing such satisfaction to his or her patients. — Roger

I think there is a difference between being friendly and being friends with a former client. As someone who used to attend therapy with a therapist I think dearly of, she made it clear to me that it was OK to send her emails with life updates after our therapeutic relationship ended. But beyond that, I think it would be inappropriate and uncomfortable to pursue a friendship with her, and vice versa, because of the patient-provider relationship that we previously had and the power dynamic that existed between us. The letter writer didn’t share the content of the email his former patient sent to him, but if it’s just a friendly life update, I think it’s fine to write back and thank her for sharing. Beyond that, I feel like it would be unprofessional to meet or pursue a deeper relationship. — Meghan

In a ‘do-over’ meeting, Seattle families question staff about school closures

Children will not necessarily travel farther on average than they do now to get to school if Seattle Public Schools goes through with a plan to close and consolidate about 20 elementary schools. School-level employees — such as,maintenance workers, office staff, principals, and food services workers — will likely be affected by staff reductions.

Those are just some of the details that emerged Thursday night as Seattle school officials answered questions from about 200 parents and community members at Garfield High Schoolduring its second community meeting on its plan to create “a system of well-resourced schools.”

But big questions, such as how much the district will ultimately save through the closures, were harder to answer.

Thursday’s session was an about-face for the district, after the first meeting Tuesday at Roosevelt High School ended with frustrated parents shouting questions at Superintendent Brent Jones and Chief of Staff Beverly Redmond.

Jones said the Garfield meeting was a chance for a do-over, even as many details remained elusive.

At Roosevelt, many of those in the nearly packed theater had attended with hopes that they’d be able to directly ask district officials how much money the district would save annually from closing schools, how option schools would be affected with fewer elementary school sites, and alternative approaches the district had considered and will continue to pursue to close the deficit.

Instead, after the presentation, Roosevelt participants were directed to use their cellphones to scan a QR code projected onto the screen to share their feedback on the district’s vision for its “system of well-resourced schools,” the term SPS is using for the proposal. 

At Garfield on Thursday, parents were able to write questions on white pieces of paper that district officials later answered during a panel discussion. There were small group Q&A’s and discussions. Parents and others asked questions about whether students would travel longer distances to get to school, what the district was doing to attract new families, plans for closed and unused buildings, and how to get more money from the state Legislature to increase future revenues.

Jones’s proposal would slash the number of elementary school sites from 73 to around 50. Each school would have pre-K, more than one teacher per grade, and music, art, and physical education teachers. The district argues that it’s costly to provide a full and consistent slate of staff and services — including full-time nurses and counselors — at schools with smaller enrollments, though that’s possible in schools serving around 400 students or more.

Twenty-nine of the district’s elementary schools have fewer than 300 students. Jones said that no district in the surrounding area has schools with fewer than 300 students. While schools under the new model will have more students, they won’t be overcrowded, he said. 

In addition to current and projected student enrollment, the district will weigh the age of the building, services for multilingual learners, and special education and inclusive practices in determining which schools will close. It also hopes to ensure that the remaining elementary schools are equitably distributed across the city.

Emijah Smith, who has two children in high school and a preschooler, wanted to know whether the closed buildings would be used for community purposes. She said she liked hearing that schools would have inclusive classes to allow students with disabilities to be served in their neighborhood schools. Still, she said, she wished the district would give parents and students an opportunity to walk through an example of a “well-resourced” building.

“Have a family walk through that, so that they’ll really get a better understanding,” Smith said. “Otherwise, it’s a top-level conversation, which makes families very concerned.”

Shawn Scott, who does not have children in the district but said he was a concerned community member, wanted to know the district’s stance on taxing the rich, although his question was not read during the panel.

“I think it’s not a choice that parents and communities should have to make,” Scott said about closures. “We have so many resources in this state. Community members need a legislature that’s open to the idea of taxing the rich to pay for schools and services. So many other states do it, and we don’t. It’s a shame.”

In the Q&A portion, one attendee asked about staggering consolidations and closures over several years, how the district would save money without mass layoffs, and whether the district could use money from the capital fund to assist with the current challenges.

Even with the tone shift, a few parents still shouted questions from the floor. One attendee asked why the district hasn’t proposed another alternative.

“That’s a great question,” Jones said. “We don’t have a comprehensive alternative model. If there is a set of strategies that’s comprehensive, that recognizes our current state, our current instability, we are very interested.”

Jones said he has not heard another approach that will bring “stability, predictability and consistency” to the district, disrupt business as usual practices and replace it with something better.

SPS’s budget challenges have been years in the making, masked in part by the ability to use one-time, short-term measures to plug holes. But the district, like many others across the country, finds itself in a particular bind this year because it can no longer rely on federal COVID-19 relief dollars to close a $105 million budget deficit for the next school year and another $129 million the following year. Declining enrollment, as well as higher transportation, insurance, and special education expenses are also contributing factors. Even with school closures, the district says it will need to make additional cuts.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Fred Podesta, the district’s chief of operations, said SPS won’t sell the closed school buildings in the short-term, but will reevaluate ownership over time.

The last two community meetings are scheduled for June 1, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Chief Sealth International High School, and June 4, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., on Zoom.
