Schools close for winter vacations, giving children the chance to engage in snowball fights, sledging, and making snow angels.

However, it’s important to remember that winter isn’t just about the external changes; it’s also about the changes within ourselves. The season encourages introspection and self-care. Just as trees shed their leaves, we can let go of what no longer serves us, paving the way for personal growth. The stillness of winter allows us to dive deep within and explore our inner landscapes.

In conclusion, the winter season is a symphony of contrasts – the cold and the warmth, the stillness and the celebrations. It’s a reminder that life is a cycle, and every season has its own beauty and significance. According to the cycle of seasons, winter arrives at the end of the year and continues till the first two months of the new year. This season is associated with a harsh climate, extreme cold weather conditions, snowfall, drizzle, and disasters like landslides. The mountains and hilly regions in different parts of the world experience immense cold.

Regular snowfall occurs in Northern India as well as several parts of Asia and Europe. During this season, Human beings try to stay indoors. Many fall ill due to this cold. However, winter is not just a passive state but also a time of festivals. Christmas and New year are the two biggest celebrations in winter. Cakes and sweets are distributed at different places. Winter is a time when we can enjoy the warmth of tea and family.

The cycle of seasons moves in a circular motion throughout the year. Almost at the end of the year, after the autumn, the earth’s revolution takes the Northern hemisphere away from the Sun. So the Northern hemisphere receives little sunrise and grows cold. During that time winter arrives on the earth. Simultaneously summer arrives in the Southern hemisphere of the earth.

Winter is associated with harsh and tough weather conditions. It is terrific to easily get accustomed to the winter season. Excessive snowfall takes place in the mountains and hilly regions and the temperature falls below the freezing point. Even on plain lands like Kolkata, the winter is quite sickening. Continuous snowfall and drizzle cause landslides in hilly regions. Winters are often unfavourable for tourism in hilly regions. However coastal places can be beautiful.

The most important characteristic of winter is many animals hibernate. Birds from the end of autumn start migrating toward warmer places. Insects also gather food and hibernate during this time. Yet this is a festive season for Christmas and New year. The whole world rejoices during this time. Cakes, sweets, and gifts are shared with people. Even in the face of severe disturbances, people still get their own opportunities to celebrate the winter season.

Earth has its own ways of creating life forms and nonliving creatures. It flows in its own rhythm and is a cycle that controls the birth and death of even the smallest of all beings. The cycle of seasons falls into the natural flow where one season automatically accompanies the other. Summer, winter, spring, and autumn are the four major seasons on earth. They create a chain or system where the end of the death of a year happens through winter and rebirth takes place through spring.

Winter is a symbol of the dead and old. The trees are bare without any leaves, the plants and flowers do not bloom, and animals and insects hibernate while birds leave their nests and migrate to warmer continents. The environment becomes white with snow and fog and human beings prefer to reside within their houses. Winter is essentially the death of life on earth.

From a geographical point of view, winter can be best understood through the mountainous and hilly regions. The altitude of those places causes extreme cold temperatures which are unbearable. Snowfall, landslides, drizzles, and snowstorms are common weather conditions in these regions. Many human lives get at stake due to this harsh weather. Thus winter is not at all romantic to enjoy with hot tea. Even on plain lands like Kolkata winter below 10 degrees Celsius becomes quite unbearable. Only the southern part of India which is the coast enjoys pleasurable weather conditions.

The winter season, however, is not entirely a dangerous situation. People honestly wait for this time so that the old year can end and the New year can arrive with new hopes and happiness. Winter in the seasonal cycle marks the end of all that is bad and unrequired. The two biggest celebrations of the winter season are Christmas and New year.

The entire world gets into the mood of vacation with the start of Christmas. Jesus, the saviour of the world was born during this harsh weather as if to give the world warmth of his virtue. People bake cakes, prepare sweets, and share goodwill and gifts with others.

While the year ends in rebirth, in Bengal the arrival of winter is celebrated through the worship of nature and its fruits. Poush Parbon is famous in different parts of Bengal where the women prepare several delicacies of sweets such as assorted pitha and payesh. Although the winter is a moment of cold and sickness the festivals make it full of life. It is one of the reasons why people await winter.

Title: Winter Season – Embracing the Beauty and Challenges of the Chilly Months

Introduction :

Winter, one of the four seasons, is a time of the year that brings a distinct change in weather and scenery. Lasting from December to February in most parts of the world, winter is known for its cold temperatures, shorter days, and unique charm that captures the hearts of many. The season offers a delightful respite from the scorching heat of summer and creates an environment of tranquility and serenity. From snow-covered landscapes to cozy evenings by the fireplace, winter evokes a sense of nostalgia, joy, and warmth.

The Beauty of Winter

Winter transforms the world into a picturesque wonderland. Trees shed their leaves, revealing bare branches that dance against the pale winter sky. Snowflakes gently descend from above, painting the ground in a pristine white layer, turning even the most ordinary landscapes into scenes of ethereal beauty. The sight of snow-covered mountains, frozen lakes, and frost-kissed foliage fills our hearts with awe and wonder.

Winter also brings a unique kind of silence. The stillness in the air, broken only by the soft crunch of snow beneath our feet, offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It provides an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.

Outdoor Activities

Despite the cold temperatures, winter entices people to engage in a variety of outdoor activities. Winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and sledding become popular pastimes. The thrill of gliding down a snowy slope or gracefully skating across an icy rink brings immense joy and exhilaration. Families and friends gather to build snowmen, have snowball fights, and create snow angels, fostering bonds and creating lasting memories.

Winter also offers the perfect opportunity for nature enthusiasts to explore the beauty of the season. Hiking through snow-covered trails or taking peaceful walks in the crisp winter air allows us to appreciate nature in its most serene state. Birdwatching becomes an exciting activity as migratory birds visit different regions, adding splashes of color to the otherwise white landscape.

Festivals and Celebrations

Winter is a season of festivities and celebrations. The holiday season, with Christmas and New Year’s Eve at its core, brings families and friends together to celebrate love, joy, and togetherness. Homes are adorned with sparkling lights, beautifully decorated Christmas trees, and the aroma of delicious food fills the air. It is a time for exchanging gifts, singing carols, and spreading goodwill.

Winter is also marked by cultural and religious celebrations around the world. Diwali, the Festival of Lights in India, is celebrated with grandeur, illuminating homes and streets with earthen lamps and vibrant decorations. Hanukkah, the Jewish festival, is a time of lighting the menorah and commemorating the miracle of the oil.

Challenges and Precautions

While winter brings enchantment and joy, it also presents its share of challenges. The plummeting temperatures demand that we take necessary precautions to stay warm and healthy. Proper clothing, including warm sweaters, jackets, scarves, and gloves, shields us from the biting cold. Layering clothing helps trap body heat and insulate us against the chilly winds.

Winter can also take a toll on our health. Cold and flu become common during this season, and it is important to practice good hygiene and boost our immune systems through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. Additionally, staying hydrated is crucial, as we may not feel as thirsty during colder months.

Conclusion :

Winter is a season of beauty, tranquility, and celebration. It invites us to appreciate the marvels of nature and enjoy the warmth of relationships. From snow-covered landscapes to festive gatherings, winter offers a unique experience that captivates our senses and fills our hearts with joy. While the challenges of cold weather exist, they can be overcome with proper precautions. As we embrace the beauty and challenges of winter, let us cherish the moments it brings, creating memories that will warm our hearts for years to come.

Winter season in India refers to the period between November and February when the northern hemisphere is inclined away from the sun and hence sun rays have to travel a longer distance to reach the surface of the earth. The winter season is a magical time as the weather gets cooler and people, in general, enjoy the weather around them. As the mercury drops, people take out their warm clothes and get together in small gatherings lighting fireplaces and enjoying small talk around them.

The vegetables available in the winter season are also fresh and taste better than the ones available during summer. People instead of avoiding the sun start waiting for the sun and enjoying its warmth.

The Importance of Winter Season

Even from the view of our culture, the winter season holds a special place. The winter season is generally the time when Monsoon has retreated, the water sources are full and the weather is very suitable for roaming around. People like to celebrate this weather along with their families and also enjoy festivities like Christmas and New Year. Many people take vacations during this time and go to visit tourist destinations like Shimla, Manali, and Leh, etc. Many parts of our country even witness snowfall and overall the weather turns delightful. However, there are various concerns that come with the winter season like Pollution. Delhi has been witnessing a sharp rise in the pollution levels during the winter season which is mainly due to the depression columns formed around the area Delhi is geographically situated in. These challenges should be dealt with so that people can cherish the mild atmosphere and enjoy it the most during the winter season.

Challenges People Face in this Season:

The season is good but not for everyone. The season creates a huge problem for all the homeless people, stray animals, and people who live in the hilly areas. In some parts of our country (especially the mountain regions), daily snowfall or rain can be witnessed during this time. It creates challenges for them to survive as the roads get blocked due to snowfall or heavy fog. That’s why they preserve their winter food throughout the year. So that they do not have to worry about it. However, life gets truly difficult in a few European countries as they face massive snowfall or blizzards during winter.

Different countries face the winter season in different ways. It may be harsh or not. One needs to be prepared well for the same.

In India, the winter comes in November, and it stays till February, though December and January are the coldest months. The schools give winter vacations. Many people go on holiday. The temperature dips, and it feels very comfy to stay tucked under blankets. We need to keep ourselves warm by putting on snug woollens. During the winter season, the weather becomes dry. Therefore we need to keep ourselves hydrated. In winter, my father lights up a bonfire in our garden every weekend, and we have such a nice family time around it.

It snows in some places in India. Last year we went to Ghoom (Ghum) in Darjeeling, and it looked like the place was wrapped with a blanket of snow. We made a snowman and threw snowballs at each other. I enjoyed the steamy dumplings in the chilly weather. Though most people like the winter season, some suffer during this season. Poor people do not have enough warm clothes to keep themselves warm. Stray animals also have a lot of difficulties keeping themselves warm. My parents get jute sacks filled with hay and place them under shades for stray dogs. They also distribute blankets to the poor people around. Many animals hibernate during winter. The squirrels in our garden go into hiding. Many beautiful birds fly over our house. My mother says these are migratory birds travelling miles and miles and coming to our country to escape the harsh winters in their place. My mother makes delicious vegetable soup in the evenings. We have juicy oranges every afternoon. I love the sweet and citrusy smell on my fingers after peeling the oranges. Beautiful flowers bloom all around during this season. I love waking up and going to the garden to see the dewdrops on the flowers that look like pearls in the morning.

Essay 1 (250 Words) – Temperature Variances and Preparations

Introduction

Winter is the coldest month in the year. In India it usually ranges for around three months from December to February. Though, the temperature varies from place to place within the country and some places have the lowest while others the highest winter temperatures.

Temperature Variances

Temperatures in India are the coldest in northern parts than in the central of southern. For example, Dras, in the valley of Jammu and Kashmir is the coldest place during winters. It lies on the trek to Amarnath and is often referred to as the second coldest place on the planet. The winter temperature at Dras stoops as low as minus 45°C. In the winter of 1995, the winter temperature here was recorded to be minus 60°C, which is the record lowest to date.

On the other hand, Sriganganagar in the state of Rajasthan that lies in western parts of India records the highest temperature even in winters. The temperature is recorded to be around 40-50°C even during the coldest winter months.

Winter Preparations

Getting ready for winter requires some proactive measures to face the chill. There is a need to accumulate food items and vegetables before the advent of winter, as it would be difficult to procure them in winter. Also, there is a need to buy extra warm clothes to keep the body temperature normal and higher than the atmospheric temperature.

India’s climate is as diverse as its culture. Even during the winters, there are places that are sweltering hot.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – How Does Winter Season Affects Normal Life

Winter season is the coldest season of the year. Typically the average temperature during the winter season is below 10°C, at times and places, often reaching below 5°C, sometimes stooping lower 0°C.

Winter in India

Winter season in India occurs typically in the months of December to February. Temperature in India during winter is comparatively lower in the north, the Himalayas being the lowest.

Due to snowfall and chilling rain in the southern Himalayan region, cold waves are generated and propagate through the plains, sending the temperature to chilling levels.

Even during the coldest winter months, many parts of northern and central India don’t receive snow falls; although, the temperature sometimes fall below zero degrees, that too only for a couple of days.

However, fog is the most common occurrence all throughout the country during winters. At places, it disrupts normal life and impedes the movement of services.

Also, the southern states of India like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, have comfortable temperatures during the winters, unlike the northern states that are uncomfortably cooler.

How Does Winter Season Affect Normal Life

Winter affects the normal life and everyday activities, mainly in the northern parts of the country.

1) Lesser work hours

During the winter the days become shorter, thereby reducing the normal business hours by around two hours. Shorter days hamper the efficiency of businesses and individuals up to some extent.

2) Obstructed vision

Fog is a common occurrence during winter. Sometimes the visibility is so low that it is impossible to see beyond couple of meters. In India, dense fog is infamous for delaying trains and flights for hours, every year. Often the fog is so dense that the trains or the flights have to be cancelled. This causes a lot of discomfort to the unsuspecting passengers.

3) Law and Order

Thieves and other notorious elements become active, trying to take advantage of fog and empty roads. It is difficult to spot a crime when the visibility is low and makes it easy for the culprits to escape. Therefore, it wouldn’t be inappropriate to say that petty crimes do increase during the winters.

Winter season, however harsh it may be, has its own advantages. It gives us a chance to preserve our energy for the coming summer months, when we would be working effectively and efficiently. Though there are some disadvantages associated with the season, never the less, its advantages are more and prominent.

Autumn is dear to me for another important reason. This is the season for the greatest Bengali festival-the Durga Puja. This is the festival of joy and happiness. It makes one happy. I enjoy in it the happiness of the season.

My Favourite Season Autumn Essay

During the rainy season, the sky remains overcast with clouds. Rains fall continually. But, with autumn, the clouds are no more. A deep blue sky spreads, like a deep blue sea. The white patches of clouds float like little fairy boats.

The day looks golden with the sun shining. The night has a silvery moon, with its silvery luster. The millions of stars, too, sparkle. Now and then, rain begins to fall thick and fast. But then suddenly the rain stops and, again, a deep blue sky smiles. In autumn, the rivers are full to the brim. The fields are all green and golden with crops. Men and women are busy among them, reaping the harvest. Nature and man seem to unite in one mood of peaceful gladness. Autumn is my favourite season.

Essay on Winter Season in English [My Favorite Season]

Hello, friends today we are here with a new essay on winter season in the English language. In this essay on winter, we have given information about the winter season in India in short and have told why the winter season is my favorite season.

Essay on Winter season in English language

Winter Season.

Winter season is also known as the season of cold, or the season of cold weather. The season begins form the month of December which continues for the four months till the month of March, in which the festival of Holi is celebrated.

In the winter season, there is no intense heat for the sun, and the environment is very pleasant with cold air flowing throughout the day. In this season of cold weather, people get rid of sweat. And people don't feel much tired even after working for long hours.

As the winter season starts and day passes the cold weather starts increasing day by day in such condition I always feel lazy to get up early in the morning and there is always feeling to sleep for some more time. But what can we do we have to wake up for going to school.

I and my friends live in the village and on Sundays, we get up early morning for a walk in this winter season. In the morning we just enjoy walking because the weather is very pleasant, fog spreads everywhere. Sometimes the fog is so much that we can't even see what is in front of us. In such conditions, while walking it feels like we are walking on the cloud in the sky. The happiness for going for a walk in this cold weather is at a different level.

Even when there is sun on the top there is no intense heat in the environment the the weather is pleasant in such condition it feels good going out. In the winter season, there are lots of changes that happen to the environment, trees start shedding their leaves and get their new leaves. Fallen leaves near trees give beautiful look to the tress. Everywhere there is greenery and it feels like there are beautiful gardens all around us.

As it is cold we go to school wearing sweaters, and in winter season there is a joy going to school as everyone plays with the steam of cold form the mouth. When the intensity of cold increases taking two-three blankets and sleeping in a different experience.

When there is cold I and my village friends create a small bonfire at night after having dinner and seat around it singing songs and have fun.

In this season of cold weather, the environment is very pleasant and I enjoy this winter season a lot hence the winter season is my favorite Season.

The Boys will end with season 5 on Prime Video

By daniel roman | jun 11, 2024.

The Boys season 4, Prime Video

It's official: Amazon Prime Video's subversive, gory superhero show The Boys will end with its fifth season. We're only a few days away from the premiere of season 4, which will continue the ongoing feud between the psychopathic superhero Homelander ( Antony Starr ) and the supe-killing vigilantes of The Boys, led by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban). What better time to confirm that this is the penultimate chapter, and will lead into a climactic finish when the show eventually returns?

That's exactly what showrunner Eric Kripke did, announcing the news on Twitter/X:

#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season! Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch Season 4 in 2 DAYS, cause the end has begun! pic.twitter.com/3p7Wt4jGA6 — Eric Kripke (@therealKripke) June 11, 2024

“#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!” Kripke wrote. “Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch Season 4 in 2 DAYS, cause the end has begun!”

When Kripke says he had to be "cagey," he's probably referring to the fact that just last month he hedged when asked about the future of The Boys , referring to his famously long-running CW series Supernatural . "I have learned since then to not try to call the seasons as the person who, and this is without hyperbole, is literally the most wrong in entertainment history of how many seasons their show should go. I need to keep my mouth shut. And so I will.”

But Krikpe did have a plan all along. “You can’t build a show that’s about these two forces of Homelander and Butcher slowly closing in on each other without bringing that to a head,” he told Empire . “Whenever that last episode occurs, I know what happens.”

Now, we know when that last episode will be: season 5. Something tells me it's going to be intense.

Also of interest is that Kripke's announcement tweet features a redacted script for the finale of The Boys season 4. All of the writing is blacked out, but a title remains at the top of the script: "Assassination Run." Maybe Billy Butcher and the gang will make an assassination attempt on politician/secret supe Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) to keep her and Homelander away from the Oval Office?

We'll know soon enough. The first three episodes of The Boys season 4 premiere Thursday, June 13 on Prime Video.

This Saturday, 99% of people on Earth will get sun at the same time

For a brief moment, only one percent of the world’s population will experience a complete lack of sunlight.

The Earth as seen from the Space Shuttle Discovery, with the sun in the upper right corner casting light across the Andes Mountains on Earth below.

This Saturday, July 8, a majority of the Earth’s population will be able to glimpse the sun’s rays.

Ninety-nine percent of the world’s population, nearly eight billion people, will be able to see at least some sunlight at the same moment. Light will reach a majority of people on Earth for about a minute just after 7 a.m. Eastern Time, but not everyone will experience the same intensity of the sun’s rays.

People living as far east as Japan will see just a hint of evening light while people living as far west as California may only see faintest glimpses of early morning light—excluding places where the sun is blocked by cloud cover.

North and South America, Europe, Africa, and most of Asia will experience sunlight while Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands will be in the dark.

A viral moment in time

Last year, a post on social media showing most of the world in some form of daylight went viral, prompting a fact-checking investigation by Time and Date , a Norway-based website that tracks and calculates temporal phenomena.

Their research showed that the claim was true—with some caveats. To count 99 percent of the population, all light from the sun counts, even dark twilight. Only around 83 percent of the world will experience “true daylight” when the sun is between dawn and dusk. Sixteen percent of the world will see some version of twilight, including the darkest form of twilight , a time of day when the light outside is nearly indistinguishable from night.

In cities where light pollution obscurs twilight, residents likely won’t be able to see the faint wisps of the sun.

This phenomenon of sunlight occurs partially because of where the world’s population is concentrated—on land. The portion of Earth that will be in pure night light falls over the Pacific Ocean, an expansive area covering about a third of the globe . Regions experiencing at least some light include the world’s most populated places.

Why does this phenomenon occur?

This moment of light isn’t as rare as you might think. Time and Date also found that a 60-day window from May to July experiences essentially the same effect, with more than 98 percent of humans on Earth getting some light from the sun for a few minutes . This is due partially to the fact that almost 90 percent of the Earth’s population lives in the Northern Hemisphere, the hemisphere tilted closest to the sun during the northern summer months.

Notably, the day when the maximum number of people can potentially glimpse sunlight does not fall on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere annually, which was on June 21 this year.

( Learn more about the summer solstice.)

While it might seem like the summer solstice should be when the most people see the most sunlight, July 8th’s claim to fame once again owes its status to where people on Earth happen to live.

As Time and Date explained last year , after the solstice, the Earth tilts ever so slightly away from the sun, shortening the average day but exposing populations farther south to more daylight hours.

Wherever you’re experiencing sunlight, follow these tips to protect yourself from the grueling summer heat—and throw some sunglasses on to protect your eyes, and your baby’s .

And if you’re not a summer person, start counting down the days to December 6 when about 85 percent of the world will collectively experience night.

The Changing Political Geography of COVID-19 Over the Last Two Years

Over the past two years, the official count of coronavirus deaths in the United States has risen and is now approaching 1 million lives. Large majorities of Americans say they personally know someone who has been hospitalized or died of the coronavirus , and it has impacted – in varying degrees – nearly every aspect of life .

Chart shows two years of coronavirus deaths in the United States

A new Pew Research Center analysis of official reports of COVID-19-related deaths across the country, based on mortality data collected by The New York Times, shows how the dynamics of the pandemic have shifted over the past two years.

A timeline of the shifting geography of the pandemic

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand how the geography of the coronavirus outbreak has changed over its course. For this analysis, we relied on official reports of deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus collected and maintained by The New York Times .

The estimates provided in this report are subject to several sources of error. There may be significant differences between the true number of deaths due to COVID-19 and the official reported counts of those deaths. There may also be variation across the states in the quality and types of data reported. For example, most states report deaths based on the residency of the deceased person rather than the location where they died. The New York Times collects data from many different local health agencies, and this likely leads to some additional measurement error.

This analysis relies on county-level data. Counties in the United States vary widely in their population sizes, so in many places in the essay, we divide counties into approximately equal-sized groups (in terms of their population) for comparability or report on population adjusted death rates rather than total counts of deaths.

The pandemic has rolled across the U.S. unevenly and in waves. Today, the death toll of the pandemic looks very different from how it looked in the early part of 2020 . The first wave (roughly the first 125,000 deaths from March 2020 through June 2020) was largely geographically concentrated in the Northeast and in particular the New York City region. During the summer of 2020, the largest share of the roughly 80,000 deaths that occurred during the pandemic’s second wave were in the southern parts of the country.

The fall and winter months of 2020 and early 2021 were the deadliest of the pandemic to date. More than 370,000 Americans died of COVID-19 between October 2020 and April 2021; the geographic distinctions that characterized the earlier waves became much less pronounced.

Chart shows COVID-19 initially ravaged the most densely populated parts of the U.S., but that pattern has changed substantially over the past two years

By the spring and summer of 2021, the nationwide death rate had slowed significantly, and vaccines were widely available to all adults who wanted them. But starting at the end of the summer, the fourth and fifth waves (marked by new variants of the virus, delta and then omicron) came in quick succession and claimed more than 300,000 lives.

In many cases, the characteristics of communities that were associated with higher death rates at the beginning of the pandemic are now associated with lower death rates (and vice versa). Early in the pandemic, urban areas were disproportionately impacted. During the first wave, the coronavirus death rate in the 10% of the country that lives in the most densely populated counties was more than nine times that of the death rate among the 10% of the population living in the least densely populated counties. In each subsequent wave, however, the nation’s least dense counties have registered higher death rates than the most densely populated places.

Despite the staggering death toll in densely populated urban areas during the first months of the pandemic (an average 36 monthly deaths per 100,000 residents), the overall death rate over the course of the pandemic is slightly higher in the least populated parts of the country (an average monthly 15 deaths per 100,000 among the 10% living in the least densely populated counties vs. 13 per 100,000 among the 10% in the most densely populated counties).

Chart shows initially, deaths from COVID-19 were concentrated in Democratic-leaning areas; the highest overall death toll is now in the 20% of the country that is most GOP-leaning

As the relationship between population density and coronavirus death rates has changed over the course of the pandemic, so too has the relationship between counties’ voting patterns and their death rates from COVID-19.

In the spring of 2020, the areas recording the greatest numbers of deaths were much more likely to vote Democratic than Republican. But by the third wave of the pandemic, which began in fall 2020, the pattern had reversed: Counties that voted for Donald Trump over Joe Biden were suffering substantially more deaths from the coronavirus pandemic than those that voted for Biden over Trump. This reversal is likely a result of several factors including differences in mitigation efforts and vaccine uptake, demographic differences, and other differences that are correlated with partisanship at the county level.

Chart shows in early phase of pandemic, far more COVID-19 deaths in counties that Biden would go on to win; since then, there have been many more deaths in pro-Trump counties

During this third wave – which continued into early 2021 – the coronavirus death rate among the 20% of Americans living in counties that supported Trump by the highest margins in 2020 was about 170% of the death rate among the one-in-five Americans living in counties that supported Biden by the largest margins.

As vaccines became more widely available, this discrepancy between “blue” and “red” counties became even larger as the virulent delta strain of the pandemic spread across the country during the summer and fall of 2021, even as the total number of deaths fell somewhat from its third wave peak.

Photo shows a testing site at Dayton General Hospital in Dayton, Washington, in October 2021.

During the fourth wave of the pandemic, death rates in the most pro-Trump counties were about four times what they were in the most pro-Biden counties. When the highly transmissible omicron variant began to spread in the U.S. in late 2021, these differences narrowed substantially. However, death rates in the most pro-Trump counties were still about 180% of what they were in the most pro-Biden counties throughout late 2021 and early 2022.

The cumulative impact of these divergent death rates is a wide difference in total deaths from COVID-19 between the most pro-Trump and most pro-Biden parts of the country. Since the pandemic began, counties representing the 20% of the population where Trump ran up his highest margins in 2020 have experienced nearly 70,000 more deaths from COVID-19 than have the counties representing the 20% of population where Biden performed best. Overall, the COVID-19 death rate in all c ounties Trump won in 2020 is substantially higher than it is in counties Biden won (as of the end of February 2022, 326 per 100,000 in Trump counties and 258 per 100,000 in Biden counties).

Partisan divide in COVID-19 deaths widened as more vaccines became available

Partisan differences in COVID-19 death rates expanded dramatically after the availability of vaccines increased. Unvaccinated people are at far higher risk of death and hospitalization from COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and vaccination decisions are strongly associated with partisanship . Among the large majority of counties for which reliable vaccination data exists, counties that supported Trump at higher margins have substantially lower vaccination rates than those that supported Biden at higher margins.

Photo shows an Army soldier preparing to immunize a woman for COVID-19 at a state-run vaccination site at Miami Dade College North Campus in North Miami, Florida, in March 2021.

Counties with lower rates of vaccination registered substantially greater death rates during each wave in which vaccines were widely available.

During the fall of 2021 (roughly corresponding to the delta wave), about 10% of Americans lived in counties with adult vaccination rates lower than 40% as of July 2021. Death rates in these low-vaccination counties were about six times as high as death rates in counties where 70% or more of the adult population was vaccinated.

Chart shows counties that Biden won in 2020 have higher vaccination rates than counties Trump won

More Americans were vaccinated heading into the winter of 2021 and 2022 (roughly corresponding to the omicron wave), but nearly 10% of the country lived in areas where less than half of the adult population was vaccinated as of November 2021. Death rates in these low-vaccination counties were roughly twice what they were in counties that had 80% or more of their population vaccinated. ( Note: The statistics here reflect the death rates in the county as a whole, not rates for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, though individual-level data finds that death rates among unvaccinated people are far higher than among vaccinated people.)

This analysis relies on official reports of deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the United States collected and reported by The New York Times .

COVID-19 deaths in Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories are not included in this analysis. Additionally, deaths without a specific geographic location have been excluded.

Data was pulled from the GitHub repository maintained by The New York Times on March 1, 2022, and reflects reported coronavirus deaths through Feb. 28.

There are several anomalies in the deaths data. Many locales drop off their reporting on the weekends and holidays. In addition to the rhythm of the reporting cycle, there are many instances where a locality will revise the count of its deaths downward (usually only by a small amount) or release a large batch of previously unreported deaths on a single day. The downward revisions were identified and retroactively applied to earlier days.

Large batches of cases were identified by finding days that increased by more than 10 deaths and were 10 standard deviations above the norm for a county within a 30-day window. Deaths reported in these anomalous batches were then evenly distributed across the days leading up to when they were released.

Population data for U.S. counties comes from the 2015-2019 American Community Survey estimates published by the Census Bureau (accessed through the tidycensus package in R on Feb. 21). The 2020 vote share for each county was purchased from Dave Leip’s Election Atlas (downloaded on Nov. 21, 2021).

The analysis looks at deaths among counties based on their 2020 vote. Counties were grouped into five groups with approximately equal population. For analyses that include 2020 vote, Alaskan counties are excluded because Alaska does not report its election results at the county level. The table below provides more details.
