Environmental protection has become a widespread issue in recent decades as human pressures on the environment have increased exponentially.

There are many ways to protect the environment. One way to protect the environment is by recycling – a way to reduce the carbon footprint and conserve natural resources. It also decreases the amount of waste that goes into landfills, which causes less pollution to water bodies. Another way is to use eco-friendly products in your life. This can contribute to a healthier environment by reducing the number of harmful chemicals and toxins in the air, ground, and water.

To protect the environment, we should be conscious of what we consume and how we consume it. Many factors affect the quality of our air, water, and land, but it is best to start small by always considering its impact on the environment.

Afforestation and tree plantation help protect our environment by reducing global warming, soil erosion, etc. We can reduce our carbon footprint through carpooling instead of driving, which is cheaper and reduces our energy usage and emissions.

Long Essay on Environmental Protection in English 500 words

Environment Protection Essay is usually given to classes 7, 8, 9, and 10.

The matter of environmental protection is of utmost urgency because of the maximum danger that the environment is in right now. Owing to various human-made activities, the situation is under a dire threat. The damage is tremendous and has reached a point of no return. However much we try, we cannot undo the destruction that has already been inflicted. Thus, we need to lessen the human impact on the environment as much as possible.

The environment contains under it the lithosphere, the atmosphere, the biosphere, and the hydrosphere. The lithosphere refers to the land surrounding us; hydrosphere contains all the water bodies surrounding us; the atmosphere contains all the gaseous fluids around us. Land, water and air pollution is the main reason behind the degradation of the environment.

Environmental protection implies taking care of and rescuing the environment. First, awareness about environmental protection should be spread; the familiar people should know about the need and requirements of environmental protection.

Environmental degradation can be kept under check in some ways. People should be encouraged to plant trees. Forests and vegetations are being cleared extensively for farming and construction purposes. It has led to the depletion of forest resources by and large. The number of trees has diminished to a great extent. Trees are our only source of oxygen in the earth; clearing trees and plants results in depletion and a decrease in the amount of oxygen available in the air. This puts the entire humanity at risk. By facilitating the growth of trees, the greenery can be restored. The loss made can be compensated.

To protect the environment, the pollution rates should be decreased. Air, land, and water pollution needs to be kept under check. Utmost care should be taken while disposing of wastes on water prices; reduced use of vehicles and transportation can help reduce air pollution; careless dumping of solid wastes on the ground can be decreased to regulate land pollution.

Saving water is yet another effective measure for environmental protection. Water is a vital resource, and it is essential for survival. The amount of fresh drinkable water on the earth is very less when compared to the enormous population. Water should thus be saved. The demand for water increases leaps and bounds, while its supply keeps decreasing. Hence wastage and excessive use of water should be curtailed.

Waste management is yet another tenet. Management of waste implies proper disposal of trash. Practices such as dumping of untreated wastes on water bodies and land should be stopped. Appropriate waste bins, sewer systems, and garbage dumps should be [present, where people can get rid of the waste. The municipality should adequately treat it.

Thus the number of ways in which to bring about environmental management is numerous. People need to be more aware and responsible. They should understand the urgent need to be careful in their day-to-day dealings with nature and the environment. They should be more cautious.

Environmental protection is improving, defending, and maintaining the quality of the environment. The main methods of environmental protection are recycling, reusing, and reducing; however, some other methods such as Green Energy production, green transportation development, and eco-friendly industrialization also exist. Not only residents but also businesses and industries should play their basic roles to improve the environment.

The History of Environmental Protection

Humankind has always been concerned about the environment. The ancient Greeks were the first to develop environmental philosophy, and they were followed by other major civilizations such as India and China. In more recent times, the concern for the environment has increased because of growing awareness of the ecological crisis. The Club of Rome, a think tank, was among the first to warn the world about the dangers of overpopulation and pollution in its report "The Limits to Growth" (1972).

In the early days of environmentalism, people thought that the best way to protect nature was to set aside areas where humans would not disturb the environment. This approach, which is known as preservation, was given a major boost in the United States with the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916.

The modern environmental movement began in the 1960s when concerns about the negative impact of humans on the environment began to increase. In response to these concerns, governments around the world began to pass legislation to protect the environment. In the United States, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established in 1970.

The Principles of Environmental Protection

There are three fundamental principles of environmental protection:

The precautionary principle: This principle states that if an activity has the potential to cause harm to the environment, then steps should be taken to prevent that harm even if there is no clear evidence that the activity is damaging.

The polluter pays principle: This states that the party responsible for causing pollution should be held responsible for cleaning it up.

The public right to know the principle: This principle states that the public has a right to know about any potential threats to the environment and what is being done to address them.

The goals of Environmental Protection

There are three main goals of environmental protection:

To protect human health: This is the most important goal of environmental protection because humans cannot survive without a healthy environment.

To protect ecosystems: Ecosystems are the foundation of life on Earth, and they provide many benefits to humans, such as clean air and water, food, and fiber.

To promote sustainable development: Sustainable development is a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Environmental Protection Essay

When it comes to environmental protection, what comes to mind for you? Do you think about the carbon footprint you leave behind when you travel? The way you recycle and compost at home? How much do you drive, or the kind of energy you use? Here are some sample essays on environmental protection.

  • 100 Words Essay On Environmental Protection

The environment refers to everything that is around us, including the air we breathe, the water we drink and the land that we live on. It's important to understand the impact of human activity on the environment, as this can affect both our current and future generations.

Environmental protection is essential for mitigating the effects of global warming on the environment by minimising pollution and preserving habitats that are important for supporting biodiversity. Additionally, governments should provide incentives for businesses to develop effective recycling strategies in order to reduce waste output and promote sustainability practices among their operations.

Environmental Protection Essay

There are a lot of ways to think about environmental protection, and it's important to consider them all.

Human activity can have a detrimental effect on the environment. Coming together, we can make a real difference when it comes to protecting our planet for future generations.

Understanding the Impact of Human Activity on the Environment

For example, when we produce greenhouse gases, this contributes to climate change. Climate change has a number of impacts, including extreme weather conditions and sea level rise. These can have serious consequences for both the environment and human populations.

It's crucial that we take steps to protect the environment, as this is not only good for the planet, but also for us. By reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, for example, we can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our goal should be to create a sustainable future for ourselves and for generations to come.

Solutions to Reduce Human Impact on the Environment

There are a number of things we can all do to reduce our human impact on the environment. Some solutions are simple, like turning off the lights when you leave a room or driving less. Others can be more involved, like installing solar panels or composting. You can also take a more active role in environmental conservation by supporting organisations that work to protect our planet. There are many worthy causes out there, and every little bit helps.

On a larger scale, governments should create regulations that protect the environment in a comprehensive manner. This could involve implementing laws that limit carbon dioxide emissions, mandating energy efficiency standards for buildings and machines, creating protected areas for wildlife conservation efforts, and increasing public investments in environmental protection projects.

Steps Towards Improving Environmental Quality

When it comes to improving environmental protection, there are a few steps that you can take as an individual.

Reduce your use of natural resources and minimise your waste output. Choose products that are labelled ‘green’ or ‘environmentally friendly’ when possible and consider reusing items whenever possible.

Use renewable energy sources rather than non-renewable sources such as coal or oil. There are many countries around the world utilising solar, wind, and hydroelectricity to power their cities.

Conserve water and soil by properly managing wastewater and reducing your water consumption.

Examples of Successful Environmental Protection Initiatives

It's important to remember that environmental protection is not just about creating laws, but also in finding creative solutions to protect the environment.

Here are a few examples of successful initiatives:

The establishment of protected areas | Over the last many years, governments have set aside many protected areas. These vary from national parks to marine sanctuaries, all aimed at reducing human impact on these areas and protecting the wildlife that lives there.

Reducing energy consumption | Governments around the world are investing more money into renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power. This helps reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and reduces greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to climate change.

Importance of Sustainable Development for Environmental Protection

Why is sustainable development important to environmental protection?

It enhances economic development while at the same time protecting natural resources. Sustainable development reduces pollution and energy use, which can reduce environmental degradation.

It helps with the management of natural resources and ensures that they are used in a way that meets current needs without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs. Sustainable development strives for a balance between economic growth, social equity and environmental protection – all of which play an important role in effective conservation efforts.

Effects of Global Warming on the Environment

Global warming is not only affecting climate change, but also causing irreversible damage to the environment. Gradual rise in global temperatures, leading to changes in weather patterns, sea levels, and ocean currents which has caused increased floods, droughts, and severe weather events in certain parts of the world.

These drastic changes have caused significant damage to forests and wildlife habitats, resulting in species loss and ecosystem degradation. As food supplies diminish due to changing climatic conditions, plants and animals face increasing challenges in adapting to their new environment.

Melting glaciers have caused sea levels to rise which are threatening coastal communities around the globe, as rising water levels increase flooding risks and create an immediate need for evacuation or relocation of affected populations.

It is essential that we work together to find balance, and that we understand the role of environmental protection in effective conservation.

The natural surroundings that enable life to thrive, nurture, and destroy on our planet called earth are referred to as an environment. The natural environment is vital to the survival of life on Earth, allowing humans, animals, and other living things to thrive and evolve naturally. However, our ecosystem is being harmed as a result of certain wicked and selfish human actions. It is the most essential issue, and everyone should understand how to safeguard our environment and maintain the natural balance on this planet for life to continue to exist.

Environment means all the natural things around us such as land, air, water, plants, animals, solid materials, garbage, sun, forest, and other things. These maintain a balance of healthy nature and make the survival of all living things on earth possible. However, due to the need for resources for development, we have deformed the environment in several ways. These changes have hampered our environment and balance of nature. We are risking our existence and the life of future generations by ignoring these changes.

The changes made by humans in the environment has to lead to severe damages like global warming, climate change, depletion of water tables, scarcity of water resources, and many more. In the coming time, the world is going to experience conditions that are going to be worse. As a result, the forthcoming generations might not get access to many resources. Forest fire in Australia and Amazon is the aftermath of human ignorance toward the environment.

Life is only possible if the balance between natural resources is maintained by all of us. It is high time that humans should come together and work for the betterment of our surroundings. By adapting, eco-friendly or sustainable methods for development, we can be cautious about saving our surroundings along with making advancements.

Nature provides an environment that nourishes life on the planet. The environment encompasses everything humans need to live, including water, air, sunshine, land, plants, animals, forests, and other natural resources. Our surroundings play a critical role in enabling the existence of healthy life on the planet. However, due to man-made technical advancements in the current period, our environment is deteriorating day by day. As a result, environmental contamination has risen to the top of our priority list.

Environmental pollution has a detrimental impact on our everyday lives in a variety of ways, including socially, physically, economically, emotionally, and cognitively. Contamination of the environment causes a variety of ailments that can last a person’s entire life. It is not a problem of a neighborhood or a city; it is a global issue that cannot be handled by a single person’s efforts. It has the potential to end life in a day if it is not appropriately handled. Every ordinary citizen should participate in the government’s environmental protection effort.

Between June 5 and June 16, World Environment Day is commemorated to raise awareness about the environment and to educate people about its importance. On this day, awareness initiatives are held in a variety of locations.

The environment is made up of plants, animals, birds, reptiles, insects, water bodies, fish, humans, trees, microbes, and many other things. Furthermore, they all contribute to the ecosystem.

The physical, social, and cultural environments are the three categories of environments. Besides, various scientists have defined different types and numbers of environments.

1. Do not leave rubbish in public areas. 2. Minimize the use of plastic 3. Items should be reduced, reused, and recycled. 4. Prevent water and soil contamination

So it is none but the only human beings who can play a vital role in the conservation of the environment. A US-based organization the Environmental Protection Agency is doing a lot to spread awareness among people to conserve the environment.

In the Indian constitution, we have environmental protection laws that try to protect the environment from the cruel clutch of human.

Essay 1 (250 Words) – How to Protect the Environment

Introduction

It is very essential for our environment to stay clean and life-sustaining. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The environment we live in is being damaged by our own deeds. There is an urgent need to take proactive measures for environmental protection and involve the younger generation in it.

Steps for Environmental Protection

Below listed are some vital points to ensure that our environment stays out of harm’s way –

  • Ban the use of plastic bags and products.
  • Ensure that your household waste is disposed through proper channel.
  • Stop littering and also encourage others to stop the same.
  • Don’t use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, rather go for organic ones.
  • Minimize vehicle use as exhaust gases are the greatest pollutants of air.
  • Save forests and plant trees because they are the lungs of the environment.
  • Minimize the use of groundwater or surface water.

Role of Students in Environment Protection

Students play a very significant role in environmental protection. They are sensitive, receptive, and take any advice, suggestion, generously. There are several schools that actively take participate in cleanliness campaigns.

Students are filled with energy and enthusiasm and their contribution to such campaigns is incomparable. Also, a student who understands the value of the environment will teach the same to younger and elders in his/her family.

It is very important that we keep our environment safe and free from pollution. Roping in young students for the same will work wonders for the cause.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – How to Improve Environmental Health

Everything that surrounds us is described as our environment. Going by this definition, our natural environment consists of – air, soil, water, forests, plants, hills, oceans, water bodies, etc. It is therefore in our own interest to protect the environment. In this essay, we will discuss on ways to improve the environment and the role of students in environmental protection.

How to Improve Environmental Health

There are many ways to improve the condition of the environment, but the most important ones are listed below –

  • Recycle and Reuse

A lot of waste that pollutes the environment consists of dumped household materials that are no longer in use, like – plastic and glass bottles, tin cans, broken computers, or other plastic items, clothes, etc. These waste materials reach the soil and water and could stay there for years, polluting them and reducing their quality. If we just take a simple step of recycling the waste instead of throwing it into the environment, we would be doing a great job of saving the environment.

Trees are the lungs of the planet; therefore, very essential members of the environment. They act as filters too and keep the air quality index of a place high. They consume carbon dioxide and emit life-essential oxygen. No need to mention the millions of life forms that the trees sustain – birds, insects, reptiles, etc. The more threes we save, we would be doing a great deal towards improving environmental health.

  • Don’t Litter

How many of you have noticed plastic bags, bottles, food packages, etc. littered around at places like beaches, monuments, and market places. The litter is the most damaging to the environment for it simply rots and pollutes it. The best we can do to save the environment is to not litter. Make it a habit to dispose of the waste properly in a dust bin. If you don’t see one around you then wait until you see one.

  • Educate and Inspire

We should educate and make others aware of the environment and how can it be preserved. Special stress should be given on teaching the youngsters and the children. When young children are taught about the value of the environment, they will acknowledge its significance when they grow up. We should also inspire others by planting trees and organizing cleanliness campaigns.

The protection of the environment is in the hands of humans. Only humans can take initiative and save the environment, thereby saving lives on the planet.

Essay on How to Protect the Environment

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – Reasons and Ways to Protect the Environment

In simple words, the environment refers to everything that surrounds us. The trees, plants, forests, rivers, and all are our natural environment. Unfortunately, this natural environment of ours is under threat due to human activities. Humans are damaging the environment on a daily basis, pressing the need for its protection. In this essay, we will discuss on why in the first place we need to protect the environment and the ways we can do so.

Why do we Need to Protect the Environment?

The environment is our home. This is where we live. In fact, it is the most essential requirement for life. Below listed are some main reasons of why should we protect the environment.

  • Gives us food

Our environment is the prime source of food that we eat. Everything from grains, cereals to fruits, vegetables, etc. is produced in the environment. Will it be possible for such a huge population to survive without such an abundant food supply? By damaging the environment we are only impeding our own food supply.

  • Supplies Essential Life Elements (Natural Resources)

The environment gives us the two very essential elements, necessary for life – air and water. We all need air to live, be it animals, plants, or even aquatic animals need oxygen and fresh air. Water is another basic life-sustaining element. If we damage our environment, we are cutting our own supplies of clean air and water.

  • Sustains Livelihood

Billions of people throughout the globe depend on the environment for their livelihood. They have taken up business out of so many resources that the environment provides. Farmers, fruit sellers, fishermen, etc., all depend on the environment for a living.

  • Supports the Complete Eco-System

A balanced and non-damaged environment supports the complete ecosystem in such a way that the planet becomes supportive of life. With a balanced ecosystem, life flourishes, and species expand.

How can we Protect the Environment – 5 Simple Ways?

Below we will go through five simple ways to protect the environment –

  • Control Waste

Improper disposal of waste is the main problem that threatens the environment today. The waste just spreads into the environment, getting into the soil, water, and air and polluting them. Proper waste disposal techniques must be employed to reduce environmental damage.

  • Rain Water Harvesting

Water, either surface or underground water, is an essential resource that impacts the overall health of the environment. If the water runs dry, so would the environment. Rainwater harvesting is a good option to save water and the environment as well.

  • Become Eco-Friendly

It would be in the best interest of the environment, for us to become environment savvy. We can do that by using bio-degradable carry bags instead of plastic, using paper bags, planting trees, taking part in cleanliness campaigns, and a lot more.

  • Stay Away from Chemicals

Avoid the use of chemicals as far as possible, primarily in the agriculture sector. If it cannot be avoided then at least make sure that no chemical reaches the environment and is neutralized after use.

  • Walk More Drive Less

Vehicles today have become the main source of environmental pollution. The exhaust emits poisonous and harmful gases into the environment. If we chose to use vehicles only when it is unavoidable, then we would be helping the environment become clean and healthy.

The environment is the place where we live in and making it dirty would be the last thing you would like to do. It is our duty to keep the environment clean and safe for life – not our own but also of other living species as well.

English Summary

The Importance of Protecting the Environment Essay

The environment means the natural surroundings that we live in. This includes the trees, the plants, animals, mountains. rivers oceans, sky, etc. The nature around us is the very essence of our survival and sustenance. Therefore it is the responsibility of every citizen of the world to preserve the environment and keep it safe as there are efforts to destruct it from many sources.

Our earth abounds in natural resources and therefore we have no right to destroy them. Man does not realize that his attitude towards nature will one day make him pay a very heavy price. The man continues to pollute the environment.

There is an increase in air pollution because of the growing number of vehicles on roads. The rivers are polluted because factories and houses throw their waste material into the river. Rivers are getting choked with silt, sewage and other pollutants. Factories processing chemical emit poisonous gases which are becoming a health hazard.

Although these industries are doing a great service to mankind, we are also paying a heavy price for this service. We have also destroyed the ozone layer partly. We are encroaching on deserts, forests, lakes, rivers, etc. Forests are being razed. Trees are being cut.

Thousand of oil wells were blown up and oil split into the sea which endangered marine life. The world was shocked at “the black snow” which fell in various parts of the world the following winter. We also suffer the effect of “acid rain” which Is rainwater mixed with the effect of various poisonous gases.

But now man is realizing the need to preserve the vital Ingredients of nature. Our government has banned the killing of wildlife and felling of trees. Heavy fines have to be paid by those who commit these”crimes”. It is a crime to interfere with nature because no man has the right to destroy this beautiful universe and make it barren for the coming generations.

Essay on Environment Protection – Essay 1 (200 Words)

From last several decades we humans have been degrading our mother earth & its resources on the name of development of technology. On the name of increasing our standards of living unknowingly we are on the way of hampering it further. Today we’ve come so far that it is no more a question of better living but it is just about living now.

Nature has an amazing quality of reviving itself against changes made in itself by natural and manmade factors, but there it has a saturation level too and maybe we have already crossed that. We have degraded it beyond repair. We have accounted to enough deforestation to imbalance the required ratio of carbon dioxide; we have impregnated the water resources with hazardous wastes enough that it cannot purify it further on its own. Soil has been degraded until the level it loses its cultivability. Problems are beyond the count and a perfect solution yet to be found.

We have gone too far and it is already too late. If we don’t start working now, we won’t have tomorrow to repent. It is no more a matter of protecting environment, but it’s about protecting us from getting into danger any further. It is the time to make amends with the nature so that it can grant us few more centuries of human existence in our home, Earth.

Essay on Environment Protection and Conservation – Essay 2 (300 Words)

Protecting environment is the moral duty of every human being on this planet, rather it’s not only protecting the environment indirectly it is about protecting ourselves from major loss. How ignorant can we afford to be when it is the question of our survival?

How to Converse Our Environment/Tips for Environment Conservation

So here are some of the things which we can do to conserve our environment:

  • If you are painting your house, use latex paint, as oil-based paints release hydrocarbon fumes.
  • Instead of using your personal vehicle, go for bike or public transport. Vehicle traffic is a major contributor to noise pollution and also to smog.
  • Try to use less fertilizer or use organic fertilizers instead because when it rains, fertilizers drain into streams along with rain water.
  • Don’t trash the streams instead do volunteering with other groups in cleaning them on regular basis.
  • While using washing machines, try to load it full or adjust the water level according to the load. Washing machines use almost 40 gallons of water.
  • Use bucket for washing cars or other vehicles, instead of hose. Because the water running from hose while you are working wastes a lot of water.
  • Set the sprinkler in the lawn instead of watering it as that will be helpful in saving water.
  • Close the tap while brushing, washing or bathing when it is not in use. 5 gallons of water goes to drain every minute the water runs from faucet.
  • Try to conserve energy by switching off the lights, fans and other electrical appliances when not in use. This will also help in reducing your bill to a much greater extent.
  • If you have mercury thermometer, replace it with the digital one. Mercury is a major pollutant and is non-degradable which moves up to the food chain and causes serious health issues.
  • Thinking about taking a paper bag or plastic from shop? Better yet, take your own canvas bag to the grocery shop and reuse it each time you go for shopping.

These small things can go a long way in saving and protecting the environment.

Essay on Need and Importance of Environmental Protection – Essay 3 (400 Words)

Introduction

Environment is degrading which means the chances for survival of living organisms on earth is decreasing. But there is still some stubborn mentality in some people that the environment is degrading naturally, so it will also recover or be back to normal naturally. This is a very wrong notion. If we don’t start protecting our environment now, then there is a huge possibility that we won’t be able to save our humanity in future.

To consider this problem seriously, let’s think about the possibilities which will arise due to environmental degradation.

  • Firstly, let’s imagine a life without clean air. Polluted air contains dust particles and other harmful particles, which maybe in solid or gaseous form. Haze, a combination of dust particle, smoke and other harmful gases, will occur. This will obscure the vision which will lead to accidents of vehicles, and in worst cases, deaths.
  • Due to high level of CO 2 and CFC, ozone layer will go on depleting, or there will come a time when it might extinct. In this case, harmful UV rays will enter the earth’s atmosphere and can cause skin cancer and other harmful diseases.
  • Carbon monoxide is also a very lethal pollutant. If it enters the human body, it mixes with haemoglobin and makes the circulation of oxygen through blood difficult, which will make us feel dizzy. If the amount of CO consumption through air is more, then this might even lead to death.
  • Due to increase of acids in air and other harmful gases, frequency of acid rain will increase. Acid rains are harmful for every living organism, from microbes to giant animals. It can cause many diseases as well as death. It can make the harmful elements enter the ecosystem through soil and water.
  • Soil having water of acid rain will degrade in its quality. This type of soil won’t possess the required mineral content and water holding capacity which will lead to decrease in the production of crops, or their quality. If the production or quality of crops decreases, then this will directly affect the humans which will lack the energy to perform because of lack of nutrient supply. This can stop the progress of the whole civilization.
  • If the acid rain or CO 2 enters the water bodies in excess quantity, then it will affect the marine life also which will eventually affect the whole ecosystem.

We should take it as our responsibility to create awareness regarding this and do whatever we can to save the environment.

Essay on Importance of Protecting the Environment – Essay 4 (500 Words)

Good Environment is a pre-requisite for the survival of life on Earth. There are visible signs that it is getting degraded. Still, there are no visible changes in our lifestyles to stop the condition getting worse then what it is now. Things that are doing harm to the environment such as working in industries or factories, commuting via fuel-driven vehicles, using air conditioners, etc have become an essential part of our lives. The amount of energy that we are using is essential and there is no other alternative to it. Mentioned below is a reality check of how we are being the major contributors in environmental degradation despite being fully aware about the importance of protecting the environment:

  • Over Population : Many parts of our planet are being over populated by human population. Over population means more demands and less supply. This creates an imbalance and disturbs the ecosystem as for human survival, the shelter of birds and animals are getting destroyed. This also increases the fossil fuel consumption and the harmful impacts of it on the environment.
  • Pollution : Increased population leads to increased waste to make the supplies reach the required rate. This wastes level leads to air and water pollution. The condition of pollution is so bad that to date, 2.4 billion people do not have access to clean, drinkable water. Humanity is constantly polluting the irreplaceable resources like air, water and soil, which takes millions of years to replenish. Not only air, water and soil pollution, humanity is also responsible for noise, radiation and light pollution.
  • Global Warming : The major cause for this is the increased level of CO 2 , and that is because of the increased rate of burning of fossil fuels. Current measurements of CO 2 levels have exceeded above 400 ppm breaking every record dating back 400,000 years. And this has lead to increase in earth’s temperature, which leads to melting of glaciers and increase in ocean level to rise.
  • Non-Veg Diet : Human’s digestive tract is a long one like that of herbivores. But still most of the human population relies on non-vegetarian diet. To grow a hen of 1 kilo, many kilos of wheat is required, but 1 kilo of wheat can satisfy the hunger of 2 persons. Hence, this non-veg diet is really expensive to the environment.
  • Deforestation : Deforestation is required for creating land space for making roads and homes for humans. This leads to destruction of the habitat of wild animals and birds. It also leads to constant increase of level of COSince there are no trees to absorb this gas so it remains in the atmosphere leading to global warming.
  • Excess Usage of Useless Commodities : For the sake of vanity, we use commodities such as leather shoes, belts and jackets which are made from the skin of animals without thinking about the impact it has on the animals. Animals suffer because of this while we adorn such decorative items made from their nails and tusks.

So, we know how humans are the ones responsible for destroying the environment and killing the humanity. It’s time to acknowledge and understand the importance of protecting our environment and work in that direction.

Essay on Pollution, Environment and Environment Protection Act – Essay 5 (600 Words)

Environment is the surrounding in which the living creatures live and interact. Everything that is needed by an organism to survive is provided by the environment. It includes physical, chemical and natural forces, which are required for the survival of the living beings. Environment has been serving mankind since the beginning of the time, and continues to do so. But since the last few decades, nature is suffering at the hands of mankind, and payback for this has already begun. Recent researches have proved that if this imbalance caused is not made right the reckoning will come. This doom can only be avoided with staunch and effective measures taken for its revival as soon as possible.

Pollution and Environment

Our entire human existence is dependent on the nature itself. We depend on the nature for a tiny pin to the most complex man made constructions. Environment has come to our aid in every way possible. Ayurveda, a practice of medicine since ancient India which is completely dependent on natural herbs, is facing crises due to depletion of various species of plants. Species of various animals and plants have become extinct or on the verge of extinction due to unnecessary interruption in the ecosystem by the humans.

Ozone layer which prevents ultraviolet rays from sun to enter our atmosphere is getting depleted due to the increase in harmful gases causing pollution in the environment. Because of the increasing demands of the increasing human population, the pollution is increasing. Man started polluting the environment since the first fire was produced. From then to now, man has been polluting the environment in the name of development. Due to cumulative effect of ozone depletion and greenhouse effect the temperature on earth is rising continuously resulting in global warming.

As a result of which glaciers at the poles are melting and contributing to rise in the sea level, many major cities inhabited by humans are predicted to submerge in water in next few decades. Post effects of this environmental degradation are beyond our imagination, need of the hour is to preserve our environment in the best way possible, not only because it is our moral duty to do that, but because it’s our only to way to survive from the harm.

Due to exponential growth of population along with industrialization, the quality of environment is degrading. There is a crucial need for conservation and preservation of the environment.

Environment Protection Act, 1986

Environmental Protection Act is an act passed by the Parliament of India in 1986 in an attempt to protect and conserve the environment. This was enacted by the government after the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. It was a gas leak incident in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, in December 1984. It was considered as the world’s worst industrial disaster as the official immediate death toll was 2,259 and over 500,000 people were exposed to Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) gas. The purpose of establishing this act was to make people implement the decisions of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. It was for the protection and improvement of the environment and the prevention of environmental hazards.

Environment Protection acts have been put in place to stop people from damaging environment in the race of becoming better than others. Individuals just think about themselves. These acts are a way to make them realize that we are standing at the verge of environmental degradation. However, all these efforts will go in vain until the individuals consider saving the environment as their very own responsibility. We all have to come together, individually, to save our planet by saving our environment.

This paper evaluates the aggregate impact of air pollution regulations introduced by the US Environmental Protection Agency in the early 2000s. We first provide regression evidence on the regulations' effects across industries and local labor markets. We then use these results to calibrate a quantitative model allowing for general equilibrium spillovers through trade, migration, industry switching, input-output linkages and emission externalities. Our model implies that regulations lowered emissions by 11.1%, but also destroyed between 228'000 and 267'000 jobs. Ignoring general equilibrium spillovers and naively extrapolating from our regressions overestimates job losses in polluting industries, but underestimates job losses in clean industries.

Spread of emerald ash borer continues in Texas

Texas a&m agrilife entities offer advice on protecting trees.

June 7, 2024 - by Kay Ledbetter

Many Texas cities have ash trees as part of their urban landscapes, which could soon come under attack from the rapid spread of the emerald ash borer. Urban forests are being impacted as the insects move south, according to Texas A&M AgriLife experts.

Emerald ash borer, EAB, is an invasive beetle species from Asia first found near Detroit, Michigan, in 2002.  It was discovered in Harrison County in Northeast Texas in 2016 and since has spread to 23 other Texas counties as of June 1, 2024 as confirmed by Texas A&M Forest Service , the lead state agency for monitoring EAB movement and helping landowners and communities prepare for, mitigate against and recover from EAB.

an open pocket knife lays across a layer of ash tree that has been cut into and just below the blade is a small green bug, an emerald ash borer

The four most recent counties with positive identifications of the pest are Collin, Franklin, Johnson and Red River. Those follow last month’s announcement of emerald ash borer findings in Grayson, Hill, Hood, McLennan and Palo Pinto counties.

“The continuous spread of EAB is a great concern for our ash tree population,” said Allen Smith, Texas A&M Forest Service regional forest health coordinator. “EAB has the potential to wipe out ash as a component of North America’s forests, meaning no more ash trees period.”

Areas of concern and quarantine

Additional counties with EAB include Bowie, Camp, Cass, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Harrison, Hopkins, Marion, Morris, Parker, Rusk, Tarrant, Titus and Wise.

A map with different shades of green and brown in East Texas counties indicating the year emerald ash borer was confirmed with a Texas A&M Forest Service logo in the bottom corner

Because it takes so many years to detect EAB infestations, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service entomologists across the state are advising residents of adjacent counties that they should monitor their ash trees for signs of infestation. In areas with known infestations, protective insecticidal treatments can be applied to protect ash trees. Trees with confirmed attacks should be removed and destroyed to avoid new beetles emerging. Ash firewood should not be transported to avoid introduction of the insect in new counties.

Both healthy and stressed trees of all ash species are vulnerable to an EAB attack and have no natural resistance to the pest. Most trees will die within two to five years after infestation and without proper proactive measures, mortality can be 100% in areas, so early detection is key.

Ash trees are generally found in wetter areas of the state, often along waterways, streams and rivers. Beyond the native ash species in Texas, EAB in urban areas with planted ash trees can significantly impact the landscape’s value. However, it is important to identify EAB before assuming a dying ash is infested because species such as Arizona ash planted in the 1980s and 90s are at the end of their natural life.

Confirmation and regulatory process

Adult specimens collected in May were sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service , APHIS, national lab for confirmatory identification.

Once the pest is confirmed in a county, the Texas Department of Agriculture assumes regulatory responsibility including establishing quarantines. The state’s mandatory quarantine regulations by TDA restrict the movement of any woody ash material exiting the county or quarantined area to slow the spread of the insect and delay the economic and environmental effects. TDA maintains a map of quarantined counties .

“Because EAB is transported unintentionally on firewood and wood products, the quarantine helps slow the beetle’s spread by restricting the movement of wood in and out of affected areas,” said Demian Gomez, Texas A&M Forest Service regional forest health coordinator.

“There is no known way to stop the spread of EAB,” Gomez said. “But communities can minimize loss, diversify their tree species and increase the health and resiliency of urban forests.”

The Texas A&M Forest Service is operating EAB traps in counties currently known and not known to have EAB, the latter with the goal of early detection. Citizens can submit sightings of what they think are EAB by calling the hotline at 866-322-4512.

Resources are also available to help affected communities identify signs of EAB infestation and make decisions about preventative measures they can take, tree management and removal. Texas A&M Forest Service will also work with communities on TDA quarantines of the movement of wood into and out of the area.

Emerald ash beetle damage and control

AgriLife Extension entomologists Molly Keck, San Antonio; Wizzie Brown, Austin; Rafia Khan, Overton; and Pat Porter, Lubbock, provided the following information:

— Female beetles lay eggs in crevices of the bark of trees. Eggs hatch into larvae, which burrow into the tree. The larval stage is the damaging stage, building galleries below the bark in the phloem and cambium layers and girdling the tree to cut off the transport of water and nutrients. This girdling can cause the tree to die off from the top down.

— Ash borer adults, which are small, green-metallic-colored insects, move steadily over time to new ash trees, generally about 12 miles per year in their march from the northern states. However, humans are also helping them by transporting infested firewood and buying nursery trees from areas infested by EAB. Trees as small as 1 inch in diameter might contain larvae.

— Host plants of EAB are ash species, but olive and white fringe trees are thought to be potential hosts as well. All native ash species in North America are susceptible, including green ash, white ash, Mexican ash and Arizona ash which are prominent in Texas.

— Symptoms of infestation include thinning of the leaves in the upper tree canopy, fewer leaves and more exposed branches. The presence of epicormic shoots, sometimes called tree suckers, on the lower third of the trunk is another symptom. This is a sign the tree is stressed and attempting to gain nutrition.

— Perhaps the most telling sign of EAB are their distinct and very characteristic D-shaped exit holes and zig-zag galleries of the larvae. After completing their lifecycle, the adults emerge from the tree. The hole they chew is 1/8 inch and D-shaped, which is not the case for other insects that may bore into ash trees.

To remove or treat trees

Trees with a greater than 20%-30% decline of leaves in the upper canopy are beyond saving, if not caught early. They should be removed and destroyed by burning to avoid further spread of EAB, according to the AgriLife Extension specialists.

Those with less damage might be saved by treatment with insecticide. Prophylactic treatments of high-value ash trees within a 15-mile radius of finding emerald ash borers is recommended to protect trees not yet known to be infested.

Homeowners and municipalities that wish to preserve their valuable ash trees, provided they have not suffered too much damage, have some options: a soil or bark-applied systemic insecticide or direct insecticide injection.

Direct insecticide injection should be carried out by a professional as they have access to the proper equipment. These treatments usually last one to two years but must be repeated over time if the trees are to remain protected. Tree care professionals have access to a wider range of insecticides products than do homeowners.

National strategy to protect nature in Canada unveiled alongside bill to ensure accountability

From: Environment and Climate Change Canada

News release

Today, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced the release of Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy and introduced an Act respecting transparency and accountability in relation to certain commitments Canada has made under the Convention on Biological Diversity (the Nature Accountability Bill).

June 13, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario

Nature is central to the Canadian identity, an immense source of pride, and foundational to ensuring healthy communities, a clean environment, and economic opportunities for Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast. Facing a biodiversity crisis in which one in five assessed species in Canada is currently at risk, the Government of Canada is committed to action that protects and restores nature so we can live within a healthy environment that sustains prosperous livelihoods for future generations.

The 2030 Nature Strategy lays out how Canada will implement the ambitious nature protection goals under the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework that were agreed upon at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in Montréal, in December 2022. This strategy defines clear areas of action and identifies what more is needed to build on the range of existing initiatives underway across Canada. This strategy follows extensive engagement with provinces and territories, Indigenous partners, businesses, citizen groups and more in recognition that nature conservation requires a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to succeed.

The Nature Accountability Bill will enshrine in legislation the Government of Canada’s commitment to protect nature for future generations. The Bill establishes a requirement for the Government to develop a national nature strategy, like Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy, and report on its implementation, ensuring accountability and transparency which will help drive us collectively to reverse nature loss.

Together, the Bill and the Strategy provide a coordinated approach to efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Backed by over $12 billion in investments since 2015, the Government of Canada has led the largest campaign in Canadian history to support nature and nature-based climate solutions, with the goal of protecting 30 percent of land and water by 2030 and conserving species at risk, in full partnership with provinces, territories, and Indigenous peoples.

The 2030 Nature Strategy will support building a nature-positive Canada to help us grow a clean, competitive, and resilient economy, attract investment, and position our companies and industries as global leaders.

“Generational fairness must be rooted in protecting and restoring our natural world for all it does to support our economy and our well-being. COP15 in Montréal was a watershed moment in landing a global agreement to follow what the science is telling us and put in place the necessary safeguards to protect nature across the planet. Today, we are taking a major step forward by launching our national Strategy and the legislation that will hold the Government accountable to make progress on these ambitious nature protection goals.” – The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change

Quick facts

Canada has shown strong conservation leadership on the international stage, as demonstrated by hosting COP15. At COP15, Canada renewed the call for ambitious action to protect nature and played a leading role in adopting the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework—a historic international agreement with over 190 countries to help protect nature, and halt and reverse biodiversity loss around the world. With the introduction of the Nature Accountability Bill, Canada becomes one of the first countries in the world to propose legislation enshrining an accountability and transparency framework to meet the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework commitments.

Since COP15, Canada has worked toward the development of its 2030 Nature Strategy, including:

  • Consulting with Canadians regarding biodiversity priorities, including by hosting a National Biodiversity Symposium.
  • Releasing a draft of the Strategy referred to as the “Milestone Document” for public comment in late 2023.
  • Hosting a federal-provincial-territorial meeting of environment ministers, where the provinces and territories were called upon to join the federal government in supporting ambitious goals to protect nature.
  • Engaging with national Indigenous organizations and modern treaty partners on the implementation of the Strategy.

Cooperation and coordinated action with provinces, territories, and Indigenous organizations are essential to protecting nature in Canada. Recently, the Government of Canada signed historic nature agreements with the Yukon, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia, backed by substantial investments, aiming toward the goal of 30 percent of protected and conserved land and water by 2030.

Current federal investments include $2.3 billion over 5 years to support Canada’s Nature Legacy and more than $5 billion over 10 years in natural climate solutions. These investments contribute to Canada’s goals for protected and conserved areas, species at risk, and addressing the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change.

Canada is investing up to $800 million to support up to four large-scale, long-term Indigenous-led conservation initiatives. By using an innovative multi-partner funding model called Project Finance for Permanence (PFP), this investment supports Indigenous leadership, addresses biodiversity loss, and supports Indigenous economic growth and well-being.

In 2023, Canada established the Nature Champions Network, a ministerial-level network that focuses on fostering international awareness and understanding of the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework and retaining momentum to ensure that all countries deliver updated national biodiversity strategies and action plans by COP16 in October 2024.

Main content.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on World Environment Day:

“Today, on World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting our environment and our planet for generations to come.

“Climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss are impacting us all at an alarming rate. It is our collective responsibility to protect, restore, and preserve the environment for our children and grandchildren. From combatting unprecedented wildfires to ensuring clean air and fresh water, we remain steadfast in doing whatever it takes to protect our planet.

“We’re working to conserve 30 per cent of our lands and oceans by 2030. We put a price on pollution – including on the biggest polluters – and we’re putting money back in the pockets of Canadians through the Canada Carbon Rebate. But we still have more work to do. With Budget 2024, we’re moving forward with investment tax credits to grow clean energy industries, including a new Electric Vehicle Supply Chain investment tax credit. With this investment tax credit, we’re securing good-paying jobs for our workers and putting Canada at the forefront of the clean energy transition. We’re doing all of this in partnership with Indigenous Peoples – including through investments of $800 million in Indigenous-led conservation initiatives.

“Protecting the planet isn’t just about having clean air and fresh water today. It’s also about fairness – about making sure we can pass on the Canada we know and love to future generations so they can experience beautiful landscapes, clean air, and healthy ecosystems, while creating opportunities by growing our clean economy.

“On this World Environment Day, I invite all Canadians to reflect on how even the smallest actions – like reducing, reusing, and recycling or taking public transit – can help protect our environment. Together, we can restore a cleaner and safer environment for everyone.”

Biden expected to take executive action to protect undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens

President Joe Biden speaks

WASHINGTON —President Biden is expected to announce a new executive action as early as this Tuesday that would shield about 500,000 undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. from deportation.

The action, according to these sources, is expected to protect undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation and to allow them to work legally in the country. It would apply specifically to undocumented spouses who have lived in the U.S. for more than 10 years, which these sources estimate as being about a half-million individuals.

The program, known as “parole in place,” would also make it easier for some undocumented immigrants to get a green card and a path to U.S. citizenship. One of the sources said lawmakers on Capitol Hill had been briefed on the proposal.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment on details.

“As we have said before, the administration continues to explore a series of policy options and we remain committed to taking action to address our broken immigration system,” the spokesperson said.

The discussions come after immigration advocates and Democratic lawmakers  urged the administration  to prioritize long-term undocumented immigrants and also as President Joe Biden tries to court Latino voters in crucial battleground states such as Nevada and Arizona.

Last week, during remarks at the White House, Biden announced  an executive action  to tighten asylum restrictions outside legal ports of entry. Under the new policy, anytime the seven-day average of illegal border crossings tops 2,500, migrants entering the U.S. between legal ports of entry — with some exceptions — will be banned from claiming asylum and deported, though there are  mounting questions  about how the action will work without new congressional funding.

Biden also teased more immigration-related moves.

“In the weeks ahead, I’ll speak to how we can make our immigration system more fair and more just,” he said. “Let’s fix the problem and stop fighting about it.”

If adopted, protections for undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens could be the federal government’s largest immigration-related relief program since 2012, when then-President Barack Obama announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. It allowed immigrants who illegally came to the U.S. as children to stay in the country.

The Biden administration has been facing criticism from all sides over immigration. Republicans have argued his asylum restrictions are too little, too late. Some Democrats have blasted the move as a betrayal of Biden’s 2020 campaign promise to enact more humane policies at the border.

The number of undocumented migrants crossing the southern border reached nearly 10 million during the Biden administration. Earlier this year, congressional Republicans — at Donald Trump’s urging — blocked a sweeping bipartisan border security bill that the White House said would have eased the crisis. GOP House members, including Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said the bill didn’t go far enough.

“Our colleagues across the aisle have failed to act,” Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., said last week while visiting the White House. “We would have liked to have seen a lot of other things that I believe the president is going to be acting on in the near future.”
