বিৱৰণ: আমাৰ স্কুলত চাৰিখন বিল্ডিং আছে। প্ৰতিটো বিল্ডিঙত   চাৰিটাকৈ কোঠালী আছে। ইয়াৰ দুটা কোঠালি  শিক্ষকসকলৰ  কমনৰুম হিচাপে,  এটা পুথিভঁৰাল হিচাপে  আৰু এটা পেক্ষাগৃহ হিচাপে  ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয়।  প্ৰতিটো ৰুমত ছয়টাকৈ খিড়িকী আৰু দুটাকৈ দৰজা আছে। প্ৰতিটো কোঠালীত সুন্দৰ চিলিং আছে। 

আমাৰ স্কুলত প্ৰায় তিনিশ ছাত্ৰ-ছাত্ৰী আছে।  আমাৰ স্কুলত এটি আহল-বহল খেল-পথাৰো আছে। স্কুলখন ১৯৫২ চনত স্থাপন কৰা হয়। স্কুলখনে ইয়াৰ স্থাপনৰ দিনৰে পৰা বহুত উচ্চ শিক্ষিত নাগৰিকৰ সৃষ্টি কৰি আহিছে।

Assam is a culturally rich State and a very versatile State on all fronts. If we compare the education system of the past and new Assam, we will realise there are a lot of differences in thinking about education now. The education system in Assam has vast differences in quality of delivering education in Assam as compared to the erstwhile British education system like Montessori Education system or immediately post-Independent phase in India. In the passage of time, the world is becoming more global and technological but even then the education system should be more qualitative oriented than sheer quantitative. Due to various pressures and growing demand for employment-oriented education, the quality of education cannot be focused upon or we can say that quick finishing of syllabus etc. does not keep room for a very progressive form of education. However, though we need to plan and calculate, as Life is not only a game, so is our education system more than a game and it should not be seen as a game playing for winning always. As a result there are also a growing number of back loggers, the failed ones and we do not have much help for the weaker ones in our system.

It is undeniable that job-oriented education is always the sought after one. A child has the right to get quality education in schools and colleges. Every student has the right to get good and progressive education in his/her career and through the quality of education in his career, he/she will get a good job and everything will be right in his life. For the importance of securing a livelihood, they go to developed cities and foreign countries for achieving their goals. The attrition rate of students choosing a career outside Assam is increasing every year. In that case, improving quality means also improving standard of education also.

On the other hand some focus is also to be given for ensuring emotional strength and for developing personality. There will be less cases of suicide and day by day, the students would be more reactive. We have been noticing that there has been an increase in large numbers of psychological problems like depression, sleeping disorder, maladjustment, etc in students and teachers. The competition for getting a job is more in the ratio of 1:50 or 1:100 in each post in every job in Assam, irrespective of whether it is a state govt. or private job. The Assam Govt. does not fill up the required vacancies: in every year there are more candidates in teaching jobs because every year there are large numbers of passed out graduates and post graduate students but compared with that there are few jobs. The students become impatient in getting jobs, as a result, they commit suicide.

As everywhere else, there are games played in the field of education also and education has been spoiled due to lots of corruption everywhere. As a result no one wants to discuss the matter of quality education of Assam. As the large scams have revealed how the entire system, with a few teachers, administrators, buyers, sellers, educators to politicians were all involved in education scams as in APSC scams and many others. So who will now talk about a secure future for honest and quality educators in our system?

We may still wonder which has the perfect educational system: the post or pre-independence era? The questions that arise first is: Does the govt. try to give quality education or not? What is the difference between ICSE AND SEBA/AHSEC education system? Where are we lacking and why are there differences in the education system in Assam??? Some teachers work without any profit, they work without salary and give proper education to students. The govt. should think as well as monitor the school wherever there is vacancy, the inspector of schools should give report to the government on time. If all work is done very efficiently then there would be no unemployment problem in our State.

Flood is one of the major problems in Assam . Every year, flood ruins and destroys many village schools’ area and destroys roads and bridges. Due to this problem, children cannot study with the focus required of them. Broken bridges and flooded roads in dilapidated condition make it very difficult to commute to and from schools and colleges. Some are very poor and below the poverty line. There is generally one option for them: whether they will select food to fulfil their hunger or education during times of flood. The people who are staying in urban areas will not understand and feel their hunger which lasts for 2-3 days or even one week. At that situation, getting education in school becomes a secondary option for suffering and victimised people. The teachers do not want to deliver their service in flooded areas and in that situation the handful number of rural teachers are the only ones who understand and render their services unselfishly.

With some emphasis on the above-mentioned points, I believe, from my point of view, that a little effort and attention towards the education system in Assam by the State govt. will improve the education scenario in Assam. Instead of giving sole importance to quantity only, let us, especially the govt., concentrate on the quality of education, perhaps like in the days of British Assam.

Accoring to the 1991 census, the population of Assam is 22 million, 89 percent of which is rural. Assamese-speaking Hindus represent two-thirds of the state's population and indigenous Tibeto-Burman tribal groups make up another 16 percent of the total (estimate). More than 40 percent of Assam's population is thought to be of migrant origin. The term "Assamese" is often used to refer to those who are citizens of Assam. Native Assamese, Mymenshingy settlers (from Bangladesh) and tea-garden laborers are thus included in its coverage. The term can also be used to describe the indigenous or long-settled inhabitants of this northeastern state. The language of the native people of Assam is called Assamese.

The state has the largest number of tribes within their variety in tradition, culture, dresses, and exotic way of life. Most tribes have their own languages; some of their traditions are so unique and lively that these causes wonder to others. Boro (or Kachari), Karbi, Kosh-Rajbanshi, Miri, Mishimi and Rabha are also among these tribes exhibiting variety in tradition, culture, dresses, and exotic way of life. Assamese is the principal language of the state and is regarded as the lingua franca of the whole northeast India. The Assamese language is the easternmost member of the Indo-European family. Although scholars trace the history of Assamese literature to the beginning of the second millenium AD, yet an unbroken record of literary history is traceable only from the 14th century.

During the six hundred years of ruling, the Ahom dynasty managed to keep the kingdom, independent from Mughal, the muslin invaders of India before the British, as well as other invaders though Mughal attacked Assam seventeen times. During this era, the Assamese society was exogenous. The British entered Assam in 1824 as tea planter which was the starting point of the destruction of Ahom dynasty.

Along with the British, the immigrants entered Assam from India together with their traditional believes such as caste system and dowri system. Some of the immigrants become a part of the Assamese society, and the other still practice their traditions.

A majority of the Assamese is the Vaishnavas (a sect of Hinduism). The Vaishnavas do not believe in idol worshiping and perform Namkirtana where the glory of Lord Vishnu is recited. The other religions such as Budhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam etc. are also practiced in Assam. The national festival of Assam is the Bihu which is celebrated in three parts during a year with great pomp and grandeur by all Assamese, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Bengali-speaking Hindus and Muslims represent the largest minorities, followed by Nepalis and populations from neighboring regions of India. About a quarter of the population is Muslim. Most Muslims are recent settlers from Bangladesh, although there have been some Muslims in Assam for several centuries. The older Muslims are well-integrated with the society.

Artist and sculptors, masons and architects, and others practicing minor crafts such as weavers, spinners, potters, goldsmiths, artisanns of ivory, wood, bamboo, cane and hide flourished in Assam from ancient times. Weaving is the traditional craft of the Assamese, and the women of almost every household take pride in their possession of a handloom. They use their handloom to produce silk and (or) cotton clothes of exquisite designs. The Eri, Muga and Pat are the important silk products of Assam. The scientific name given to the worms which produce the muga silk is Antehra Assam---due to the fact that these worms cannot survive in any other climates other than the climate of the Northeast. Gandhiji complimented the Assamese weavers as artists who could weave dreams in their loomes. Cultural Life The cultural life of Assam is interwoven with the acitivies of two important cultural and religious institutions: the satras (the seat of a religious head, the satradhikar) and the naamghar (the house of names or the prayer hall). The satras hve been in existence for more than 400 years.

Most of the native population of Assam is Vaishnavite Hindu. Villagers generally associate on the basis of membership of a local center of devotional worship called "nam ghar" or "the house of names" (of God), whose members describe them as "one people" or "raij". Villages are usually made up of families from a number of distinct castes. The caste system, although it exists, is not as prominent as in other parts of India.

Among the Assamese, a form of Hinduism exists with two contrasting emphases, that of caste and sect. In caste, one finds polytheism, hierarchy, membership by birth (inherited status), collective ideas of humanity (caste groups), mediation of ritual specialists, rites conducted in Sanskrit through priests, complexity and extravagance of ritual, multiplicity of image, and salvation through knowledge or works. In sects, one finds monotheism, egalitarianism among believers, membership by invitation (acquired status), individual ideas of humanity (individual initiates), direct access to spiritual revelation, worship conducted in the verncular by the congegration, simplicity of worship, incarnation of God in the written word, and salvation through faith and mystical union.

The most important social and cultural celebrations are the three Bihu festivals observed with great enthusiasm irrespective of caste, creed and religious affinity. The Bohag Bihu, celebrated in mid-April, is the most important one. It is also known as Rangaali Bihu ("rang" means merry-making and fun). It is observed by dancing and singing in open spaces as well as in the houses. The second important Bihu, Magh Bihu, is a harvest festival celebrated in mid-January. It is celebrated with community feasts and bonfires. It is also known as the Bhogaali Bihu ("bhog" means enjoyment and feasting). The third Bihu festival is observed in mid-October. It is also known as the Kangaali Bihu ("kangaali" means poor) because by this time of the year which is before the harvest is brought home, the stock of foodgrains is low in a common man's house.

The Assamese also observe pan-Indian religious festivals such as Durga Puja, Dol-jatra or Fakuwa, Janmastami, and the Eids.

Another important aspect of the cultural life of the peopel of Assam, particularly the women, is weaving of fine silk and cotton cloths of various floral and other decorative designs.

Indian literature has a long history since the Vedic-period. Different social and political changes have influenced this literary history from time to time and these changes have given rise to different literary genres. The last two decades are important for Indian literature in the context of emerging modernity and in bridging a link between the East and the West. In this paper, the attempt has been made to uncover the facts behind the emergence of modernity in Indian literature under the impact of colonizers with special reference to the Assamese Literature.

The tea plantation in Assam occupies an important place in the economy, culture and polity of the state as it contributes the country’s 53.97 per cent area and 52.04 per cent in tea production. During the British colonial rule the onset of tea plantations has not only changed the landscape of Brahmaputra valley through green tea bushes being nourished by tea tribes from east and central parts of India. The Assamese Novel were born since in the late nineteenth century. The influence of the western literature is significantly distinguished in early periods of Assamese novel. Nearly hundred and thirty years ago in the ‘Jonaki era’, different Assamese novelist tried their hands in contributing creation of the Assamese Novel. Among of those Padmanath Gohainbaruah, Laximinath Bezbarua, Rajanikanta Bodoloi was pioneer of the Assamese novel. Before independence, the main trend of Assamese novels was based on historical novel. After the 2nd World war and Independence of India, Assamese novel developed through various genres, especially the genre of social novels become very stronger. New genres of novel like political novel, biographical novel, detective novel, mystery novel, mythological novel, science fiction etc were also written after independence. In twenty first century, most of the novels have been written in the above mention categories, although the two strong genres have influence in the present Assamese novels, the first genre in genre of historical novel and second it is biographical novel. It is notable that contemporary Assamese novel reflecting the various issue of Assamese society also. This paper is trying to discuss about present scenario of Assamese novel.

Will Our Hostage Son Be Next?

Mr. and Mrs. Alexander are the parents of Edan Alexander, an American member of the Israel Defense Forces who has been held hostage in Gaza since Oct. 7.

For 11 months, the family of Hersh Goldberg-Polin tapped into reserves of strength that most people never need to find. We watched it firsthand, as parents of a hostage ourselves. Our 20-year-old son Edan, an American citizen who graduated from high school in Tenafly, N.J., was serving in the Israel Defense Forces near Gaza when Hamas took him captive on Oct. 7.

For 331 days, the world has failed our son and his fellow hostages: The Israeli government has abandoned them, too many countries have turned a blind eye, and while we’re grateful for the U.S. government’s steadfast support, its efforts have yet to yield results.

Last month, the world watched as Hersh’s parents, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg, told the story of their 23-year-old son at the Democratic National Convention. Ms. Goldberg, looking small next to the podium, and Mr. Polin, hunched over the microphone, spoke with emotion and clarity. With heavy hearts, we rewatched their speech on Sunday, hours after the world learned that the bodies of Hersh and five other hostages were recovered by the Israeli military in Gaza.

The result of Hamas’s cruelty and Israel’s indifference have now come to bear, and two people who have become family to us have paid the ultimate price. Hersh’s brutal killing has us racked with pain for the Goldberg-Polins and fear that our own son Edan will soon meet the same fate.

None of this had to happen.

Since October, we — along with Jon, Rachel, and other hostage families — have warned that our loved ones could be killed in captivity without a deal to bring them home. Every day as captives puts their lives more at risk.

And yet, after one hopeful but temporary cease-fire agreement that released more than 100 hostages , we have only experienced delay after delay.
