26 Planning a Discursive Essay

Discursive essay – description.

A discursive essay is a form of critical essay that attempts to provide the reader with a balanced argument on a topic, supported by evidence. It requires critical thinking, as well as sound and valid arguments (see Chapter 25) that acknowledge and analyse arguments both for and against any given topic, plus discursive essay writing appeals to reason, not emotions or opinions. While it may draw some tentative conclusions, based on evidence, the main aim of a discursive essay is to inform the reader of the key arguments and allow them to arrive at their own conclusion.

The writer needs to research the topic thoroughly to present more than one perspective and should check their own biases and assumptions through critical reflection (see Chapter 30).

Unlike persuasive writing, the writer does not need to have knowledge of the audience, though should write using academic tone and language (see Chapter 20).

Choose Your Topic Carefully

A basic guide to choosing an assignment topic is available in Chapter 23, however choosing a topic for a discursive essay means considering more than one perspective. Not only do you need to find information about the topic via academic sources, you need to be able to construct a worthwhile discussion, moving from idea to idea. Therefore, more forward planning is required. The following are decisions that need to be considered when choosing a discursive essay topic:

  • These will become the controlling ideas for your three body paragraphs (some essays may require more). Each controlling idea will need arguments both for and against.
  • For example, if my topic is “renewable energy” and my three main (controlling) ideas are “cost”, “storage”, “environmental impact”, then I will need to consider arguments both for and against each of these three concepts. I will also need to have good academic sources with examples or evidence to support my claim and counter claim for each controlling idea (More about this in Chapter 27).
  • Am I able to write a thesis statement about this topic based on the available research? In other words, do my own ideas align with the available research, or am I going to be struggling to support my own ideas due to a lack of academic sources or research? You need to be smart about your topic choice. Do not make it harder than it has to be. Writing a discursive essay is challenging enough without struggling to find appropriate sources.
  • For example, perhaps I find a great academic journal article about the uptake of solar panel installation in suburban Australia and how this household decision is cost-effective long-term, locally stored, and has minimal, even beneficial environmental impact due to the lowering of carbon emissions. Seems too good to be true, yet it is perfect for my assignment. I would have to then find arguments AGAINST everything in the article that supports transitioning suburbs to solar power. I would have to challenge the cost-effectiveness, the storage, and the environmental impact study. Now, all of a sudden my task just became much more challenging.
  • There may be vast numbers of journal articles written about your topic, but consider how relevant they may be to your tentative thesis statement. It takes a great deal of time to search for appropriate academic sources. Do you have a good internet connection at home or will you need to spend some quality time at the library? Setting time aside to complete your essay research is crucial for success.

It is only through complete forward planning about the shape and content of your essay that you may be able to choose the topic that best suits your interests, academic ability and time management. Consider how you will approach the overall project, not only the next step.

Research Your Topic

When completing a library search for online peer reviewed journal articles, do not forget to use Boolean Operators to refine or narrow your search field. Standard Boolean Operators are (capitalized) AND, OR and NOT. While using OR will expand your search, AND and NOT will reduce the scope of your search. For example, if I want information on ageism and care giving, but I only want it to relate to the elderly, I might use the following to search a database: ageism AND care NOT children. Remember to keep track of your search strings (like the one just used) and then you’ll know what worked and what didn’t as you come and go from your academic research.

Write the Thesis Statement

The concept of a thesis statement was introduced in Chapter 21. The information below relates specifically to a discursive essay thesis statement.

As noted in the introduction to this chapter, the discursive essay should not take a stance and therefore the thesis statement must also impartially indicate more than one perspective. The goal is to present both sides of an argument equally and allow the reader to make an informed and well-reasoned choice after providing supporting evidence for each side of the argument.

Sample thesis statements: Solar energy is a cost -effective solution to burning fossil fuels for electricity , however lower income families cannot afford the installation costs .

Some studies indicate that teacher comments written in red may have no effect on students’ emotions , however other studies suggest that seeing red ink on papers could cause some students unnecessary stress. [1]

According to social justice principles, education should be available to all , yet historically, the intellectually and physically impaired may have been exempt from participation due to their supposed inability to learn. [2]

This is where your pros and cons list comes into play. For each pro, or positive statement you make, about your topic, create an equivalent con, or negative statement and this will enable you to arrive at two opposing assertions – the claim and counter claim.

While there may be multiple arguments or perspectives related to your essay topic, it is important that you match each claim with a counter-claim. This applies to the thesis statement and each supporting argument within the body paragraphs of the essay.

It is not just a matter of agreeing or disagreeing. A neutral tone is crucial. Do not include positive or negative leading statements, such as “It is undeniable that…” or “One should not accept the view that…”. You are NOT attempting to persuade the reader to choose one viewpoint over another.

Leading statements / language will be discussed further, in class, within term three of the Academic English course.

Thesis Structure:

  • Note the two sides (indicated in green and orange)
  • Note the use of tentative language: “Some studies”, “may have”, “could cause”, “some students”
  • As the thesis is yet to be discussed in-depth, and you are not an expert in the field, do not use definitive language
  • The statement is also one sentence, with a “pivot point” in the middle, with a comma and signposting to indicate a contradictory perspective (in black). Other examples include, nevertheless, though, although, regardless, yet, albeit. DO NOT use the word “but” as it lacks academic tone. Some signposts (e.g., although, though, while) may be placed at the start of the two clauses rather than in the middle – just remember the comma, for example, “While some studies suggest solar energy is cost-effective, other critical research questions its affordability.”
  • Also note that it is based on preliminary research and not opinion: “some studies”, “other studies”, “according to social justice principles”, “critical research”.

Claims and Counter Claims

NOTE: Please do not confuse the words ‘claim’ and ‘counter-claim’ with moral or value judgements about right/wrong, good/bad, successful/unsuccessful, or the like. The term ‘claim’ simply refers to the first position or argument you put forward (whether for or against), and ‘counter-claim’ is the alternate position or argument.

In a discursive essay the goal is to present both sides equally and then draw some tentative conclusions based on the evidence presented.

  • To formulate your claims and counter claims, write a list of pros and cons.
  • For each pro there should be a corresponding con.
  • Three sets of pros and cons will be required for your discursive essay. One set for each body paragraph. These become your claims and counter claims.
  • For a longer essay, you would need further claims and counter claims.
  • Some instructors prefer students to keep the pros and cons in the same order across the body paragraphs. Each paragraph would then have a pro followed by a con or else a con followed by a pro. The order should align with your thesis; if the thesis gives a pro view of the topic followed by a negative view (con) then the paragraphs should also start with the pro and follow with the con, or else vice versa. If not aligned and consistent, the reader may easily become confused as the argument proceeds. Ask your teacher if this is a requirement for your assessment.

Use previous chapters to explore your chosen topic through concept mapping (Chapter 18) and essay outlining (Chapter 19), with one variance; you must include your proposed claims and counter claims in your proposed paragraph structures. What follows is a generic model for a discursive essay. The following Chapter 27 will examine this in further details.

The paragraphs are continuous; the dot-points are only meant to indicate content.

Introduction

  • Thesis statement
  • Essay outline (including 3 controlling ideas)

Body Paragraphs X 3 (Elaboration and evidence will be more than one sentence, though the topic, claim and counter claim should be succinct)

  • T opic sentence, including 1/3 controlling ideas (the topic remains the same throughout the entire essay; it is the controlling idea that changes)
  • A claim/assertion about the controlling idea
  • E laboration – more information about the claim
  • E vidence -academic research (Don’t forget to tell the reader how / why the evidence supports the claim. Be explicit in your E valuation rather than assuming the connection is obvious to the reader)
  • A counter claim (remember it must be COUNTER to the claim you made, not about something different)
  • E laboration – more information about the counter claim
  • E vidence – academic research (Don’t forget to tell the reader how / why the evidence supports the claim. Be explicit in your E valuation rather than assuming the connection is obvious to the reader)
  • Concluding sentence – L inks back to the topic and/or the next controlling idea in the following paragraph

Mirror the introduction. The essay outline should have stated the plan for the essay – “This essay will discuss…”, therefore the conclusion should identify that this has been fulfilled, “This essay has discussed…”, plus summarise the controlling ideas and key arguments. ONLY draw tentative conclusions BOTH for and against, allowing the reader to make up their own mind about the topic. Also remember to re-state the thesis in the conclusion. If it is part of the marking criteria, you should also include a recommendation or prediction about the future use or cost/benefit of the chosen topic/concept.

A word of warning, many students fall into the generic realm of stating that there should be further research on their topic or in the field of study. This is a gross statement of the obvious as all academia is ongoing. Try to be more practical with your recommendations and also think about who would instigate them and where the funding might come from.

  • 3 texts – Answer on 1
  • 3 Questions: 2x15m + 1x20 marks

Expect Q(i) to be very straightforward – often a simple character analysis task.

Based on your reading of the written element of TEXT 3, explain three insights you gain into the character of Ariadne O’Neill. Support your response with reference to the text.

Expect Q(iii) to be a style question – vital to prepare and be able to identify the key qualities of different styles of writing: a)    Argument -----> Discursive  b)    Persuasion ----> Speech / talk c)    Story / narrative d)    Description / Aesthetic e)    Personal writing

Expect Q(ii) to be the most challenging . In recent years, these questions have required candidates to be imaginative . These questions often do not require direct reference to the attached Reading Comprehension passage.  

Example: In TEXT 1, Jeanette Winterson claims that, “We go to Shakespeare to find out about ourselves now.” With reference to a Shakespearean play you have studied for your 2019 Leaving Certificate course, identify an image, moment or episode that revealed something to you about “yourselfnow”. Explain the insight(s) you gained from engaging with this image, moment or episode.

Comprehension – QB - 50m = 12.5%

  • 3 tasks – Answer on 1
  • Pick QB first
  • Imaginative tasks – often requires candidate to adopt a persona
  • Task usually involves a ‘framework’ instruction, i.e. A speech; a talk; an introduction to a collection of essays; a magazine article / blog post / article for school website; a formal letter; a Diary entry

Questions will also usually contain a list of tasks that must be addressed across the response. The key here is to be:  1)    Accurate 2)    Consistent 3)    Imaginative 4)    Concise  

Example: In TEXT 1, Jeanette Winterson extols the virtues of the arts, arguing that artistic activities are beneficial both for individuals and for society in general. She also gives her views on the relationship between art and money. Write an opinion piece, suitable for publication in a broadsheet newspaper, in which you extol the varied virtues of sport, put forward a reasoned argument to persuade readers that sport benefits both individuals and society, and give your views on the appropriate relationship between sport and money.

Composition – 100m = 25%

  • The most important section of the exam
  • 7 choices – select one
  • Questions always genre-specific
  • A personal essay
  • A short story
  • A discursive essay

There will also likely be an option to write: 

  • A descriptive essay
  • A persuasive essay
  • A magazine / newspaper article

The style of writing is the most important criteria for assessment here. Tasks are genre-specific, so:

  • A short story should contain obvious elements of narrative / aesthetic language
  • A speech should display an understanding of persuasive and argumentative techniques
  • A discursive essay should display a balanced, informed, considered approach
  • A personal essay should be reflective and contain ‘individual observation’

The marking schemes very clearly lay out the expectations related to each style of essay and should be studied closely.

The quality of language and expression  will be closely examined in this task above all others. The expectation is that the candidate will display a strong understanding of the particulars of the selected genre and will write in an articulate and clear style.

Imagination and Originality are key factors in a successful composition.

Paper 2 – 200m – 200 minutes.

Time management: take one hour to write each essay, and then spend 20 minutes on Unseen Poetry at the end.

There is an expectation that all answers on Paper 2 will be:

  • Substantial (anywhere between 1,000 & 1,200 words is a reasonable expectation)
  • Evidence-based. Quotation is vitally important here. There is an absolute expectation of supporting quotation for answers to Single Text and Studied Poetry answers. Quotation also adds to the quality of comparative answers.
  • Analytical – the expectation is that answers will contain thoughtful and considered question-facing commentary. All Paper 2 tasks are exercises in CRITICAL THINKING.
  • Properly structured.  

Note: In responses to Single Text and Studied Poetry tasks, opening and closing paragraphs certainly should be written . However, they should be brief and only need to accomplish one task – state the candidate’s response to the statement proposal in the question. Every answer on Paper 2 must be written in the language of argument  so provide your THESIS and move on. Closing paragraphs should again be brief and simply re-iterate the thesis. Candidates do not need to ‘list’ points on the OP or CP.

Single Text – 60m = 15%

Five texts are prescribed for study:

  • All the Light We Cannot See
  • A Doll’s House
  • Frankenstein
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray
  • There will be 2 questions on each text and candidates must answer one question.
  • The question will contain multiple elements

Examples: #1 Discuss how Shakespeare makes effective use, for a variety of purposes, of the contradictions and inconsistencies evident in Othello’s character. Develop your discussion with reference to Shakespeare’s play, Othello.

#2 Discuss how Shakespeare’s use of language, including imagery, plays an important part in developing our understanding of one of the following aspects of his play, Othello: themes; characterisation; setting and atmosphere. Develop your answer with reference to the text.

Expectations:

  • Answers will be question-facing.
  • Answers will not ‘narrate’ the studied text.
  • Answers will be thoughtful, and points and evidence will be contextualised in the light of the question.
  • Between 4-6 relevant points will be presented in a logical and structured essay.

Othello – Key Topics for Revision:

  • The story-arc of the main characters
  • The modern appeal 
  • Universal themes like corruption and deception are particularly important.

Comparative Three modes are prescribed for study:

  • The cultural context
  • Theme and issue
  • Literary genre

CANDIDATES MUST ANSWER ON ONE MODE.

  • Each mode will offer a choice between two questions.
  • One choice will be a stand-alone 70-mark essay. 
  • In 2021, candidates could refer to 2 texts when answering this question WITHOUT FEAR OF PENALTY.
  • The other choice will be divided into Part A (30) marks and Part B (40 marks).
  • Candidates are expected to be able to refer to three texts when answering this question.

Expectations: Answers will

  • Be written in the comparative spirit
  • Display a detailed knowledge of the selected texts
  • Avoid paraphrasing / narrating the selected texts.

When writing a Comparative answer, ensure you clearly identify your selected texts before you begin to write. The list technique is a very effective way to do this.

Try to develop 3-4 points in a thoughtful and analytical style.

  • Expect to see at least one poet from each category on your exam. 
  • 4 poets are usually examined
  • In 2021, 5 poets were examined.
  • Candidates have to answer on one poet.
  • Questions will usually explicitly refer to  a)    The thematic content of a poet’s work b)    Aspects of the poet’s style of writing  
  • Candidates should refer to between 4-6 poems in an answer.
  • Candidates will focus in on 3-4 core poems and then refer to another 1-2 other poems in context.
  • Candidates will not summarise the poems. 
  • Candidates will be selective in choice of evidence. 
  • You do not have to tell the examiner the story of the poem.  
  • The questions will vary in difficulty . Decision-making is a key skill here.
  • A good example if this comes from the 2020 Paper 2:

Emily Dickinson  Discuss how Dickinson’s unique approach to language, and the balance between beauty and horror in her imagery, help to relieve some of the darker aspects of her poetry. Develop your response with reference to the poems by Emily Dickinson on your course. 

Adrienne Rich Discuss how Rich makes effective use of a variety of characters, often in dramatic settings, to probe both personal issues and wider social concerns in her poems. Develop your response with reference to the poetry by Adrienne Rich on your course.

Finally, some comments from the Chief Examiner that are worth considering...

The Leaving Certificate English Syllabus states that, “Developing control and power over language is the most essential educational achievement for all students if they are to become confident, thoughtful and discriminating adults and citizens”, (Leaving Certificate Syllabus, English, para. 3.5). The importance of key language skills is emphasised throughout the Marking Schemes for Leaving Certificate English and candidates who exhibit competence and control in the use of language are rewarded. It should be remembered that  candidates’ language skills are continuously assessed in the marking of answers to all questions on both Papers 1 and Paper 2 of the Leaving Certificate English examination. The criteria for assessment are applied in the case of every answer at both Higher and Ordinary Levels. This means that candidates who exhibit fluency appropriate to the task are rewarded in relation to every question answered. It is worth noting that some examiners identified candidates who were able to demonstrate knowledge of a text or texts but were less able to deliver this knowledge in a lucid and coherent fashion. 

An appropriate awareness of grammatical and syntactical conventions contributed to the cohesiveness of better answers in the 2013 examination, as did the use of correct spelling and punctuation. Weaker responses tended to be characterised by an inability to organise answers in a logical and coherent fashion and a lack of clear expression. The syllabus requires that, “all students will be expected to be assiduous in their attention to paragraphing, syntax, spelling and punctuation.” 

Candidates at both Higher and Ordinary Levels benefited when they exhibited an ability to structure their writing, organise paragraphs, spell accurately and correctly employ punctuation. 

The criteria for assessment also make explicit reference to the “use of lively interesting phrasing, energy, style and fluency”. It is essential that candidates are aware of the many purposes for which language is used and the diverse forms it can take, to appropriately serve particular purposes and audiences. Creative and thoughtful users of language were rewarded.

When writing essays, it can be challenging to take a step back and read your work as the audience would. For students, this audience is usually a lecturer or tutor: a person with the power to give good or bad grades. That's why having a professional pair of eyes review your work before you submit it can be invaluable.

What we look for in a great essay is likely to be the same as what your tutor is looking for. Where we differ is in the level of attention devoted to providing feedback. We are not just seeking to critique your essay – our ultimate aim is to help you improve your essay to its very best potential.

The marking process

It may sound obvious, but no two markers are the same. We are human beings, after all. We may have different stylistic preferences, and what interests us will vary. Despite this, there are certain constant elements that go into writing a great essay . We look for these elements during the marking process and then give feedback on any areas that need attention. In this sense, we are the critical reader to you as an academic writer .

The first thing a marker will likely do is examine the writer’s brief. This indicates essay type, subject and content focus, word limit and any other set requirements. The brief gives us the guidelines by which to mark the essay. With these expectations in mind, critical reading of your essay begins. There are five key elements that we examine, all of which form the basis of any great essay :

A well-crafted essay will have a clear sense of structure. This is the template upon which to hang your message. Get your structure right and you’re well on the way to creating a great essay. Getting it right is all about organisation and ensuring you include all the necessary elements. The essential structural components of any essay should be an introduction, the main body and a conclusion.

An effective introduction sets the scene immediately. Within the first few sentences, it should be obvious what the rest of the essay is about. The context of the question and, therefore, the overall scope of the essay should also be explicit. This manages the reader’s expectations for the rest of their experience reading, and marking, your piece of work. The more satisfying introductions justify both the question itself and any areas of particular focus.

So, while seeking to improve an essay, we look for whether the writer has answered the what, where, who and why questions in the introduction. What is the writing about? Yes, the essay title gives us some idea but here is where we expect to see it made explicit. Who is it written for, and why? Where is it relevant?

Of course, the question of how tends to be the focus of the main body of the essay. And the main body forms the bulk of your assignment. Its organisation will depend on the type of exercise you have undertaken, and what requirements and constraints have been set by your assessors. We always take these points into consideration when marking. Markers are also aware of formatting conventions and are sensitive to these when developing critical feedback. Independent of these constraints, we check your work to determine how well different sections relate to each other and that there is a logical flow of content. This flow is the primary demonstrator that you have understood what you are writing about and how you should be presenting it. Logical flow can easily make the difference between grades. When marking your work, we aim to give you pointers on how to strengthen this area.

A strong essay conclusion serves to summarise to your assessor how well you can reflect on what you have written about. It is another vital part of the whole picture that we look to ensure you’ve mastered. We check to see if your ideas have been brought together and are coherent. If we see it, your assessor will too.

3. Knowledge and understanding

Here is where we assess how well you have understood the question and how much you know about the subject. We do more than simple fact checking (though we do ensure you have got your stuff right). We want to see how clear things are and if they’ve been linked together in the right way. We ask, how well is your message conveyed?

Often, in academic writing, it can be tempting to cram as much detail into a sentence as possible. Or to include every single point of view on the topic in hand. Really, this is the wrong way to go. At first glance, it may seem a point of style, but the best way to show your understanding of a subject is to lay your knowledge and research out in plain terms. And keep your work focused. Despite a need for focus, we do expect to see breadth and depth of knowledge. This means you provide a suitable level of detail to answer the question but also evidence of a wider understanding of the subject. In short, has the detail been put into context?

Is it clear that you understand what you talk about? We have mentioned this already, but it’s the main thing your examiners are looking for, so it bears repeating. The facts you’ve researched, the way you’ve worded and structured them, the logical flow between them, and any insights you’ve discussed all contribute towards this. Your level of comprehension is foremost in the marker’s mind.

Have all things been considered? Are there any issues left out or missed? Sometimes, you’ll intentionally omit an area, and so this should be indicated when you talk about scope in the introduction. But if you’ve missed something and it seems like you’ve just forgotten it, we will remind you.

Focus – do things stay on track or are there any digressions? There’s nothing wrong with tangents, as long as they add to the story. We assess exactly the value of each phrase in the work and let you know if anything is diluting your message. Remember, your marker is knowledgeable in your area of study. If we don’t understand it, chances are your tutors won’t either.

4. Argument and critical thinking

To get the good grades, this is an area to give attention to. Convincing the reader of your argument is, essentially, what essay writing is all about. This is about how you’ve used the information to tell your story or make your point. What we look for here are coherence and evidence. Argument needs to be seen strongly throughout the work. Do you follow your line of argument right through and are counterarguments presented? We’ll let you know if, and where, your particular argument is well-formulated and substantiated. Most important for you, we give feedback on any holes in your logic.

As said, we look to see if the argument is solid, well-reasoned, examined from all angles and supported by evidence. This support comes from the literature. As we cast a critical eye on your writing, we check to see if you have, in turn, done the same to the literature. Can you discuss critically complex, even abstract, ideas and concepts? Evidence of clarity and independent thought is great to see. Going beyond what the accepted norms are is a clear indicator of your capabilities.

5. Use of sources

We examine the type and range of sources used in the construction of your essay. The best of essays will demonstrate analysis beyond any core texts to include current, respectable works, and maybe even discuss controversial ones.

All information sources must be cited in your work. This is more than simply showing where you gathered your information from. A well-placed citation gives the reader confidence in what has been claimed by the writer. So, here we look to see how suitable the sources are in supporting your text. In other words, have their contents been properly understood and are they appropriately represented?

6. Style and presentation

This is all about how you have packaged your content. You could have the best story to tell but it may be missed if hidden by poor presentation.

We examine the usual mechanisms of English, such as spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence construction. Stylistic factors such as tone, formatting and quality of figures, are also considered. What we’re really looking for, is whether you’re giving your examiner a tiring read or an easy ride. Overview of the PSLE English Examination

The PSLE English examination is designed to assess students’ proficiency in the English language across four key components:

  • Writing (Paper 1),
  • Language Use and Comprehension (Paper 2),
  • Listening Comprehension (Paper 3), and
  • Oral Communication (Paper 4).

The total marks for the examination sum up to 200, with each component contributing a different weighted towards the final grade:

• Paper 1: Writing (55 marks, 27.5%) • Paper 2: Language Use and Comprehension (95 marks, 47.5%) • Paper 3: Listening Comprehension (20 marks, 10%) • Paper 4: Oral Communication (30 marks, 15%)

Now, let’s examine each paper in further detail.

PSLE English Paper 1: Writing

Paper 1 is divided into two parts:  Situational Writing and Continuous Writing (commonly referred to as Composition) and students are given 70 mins to complete it.

• Situational Writing: 15 marks (7.5%) • Continuous Writing: 40 marks (20%) • Total: 55 marks (27.5%)

PSLE English Situational Writing (15 marks; 7.5%)

In this section, students are provided with a context and a visual-stimulus. They’re required to write a response to it, generally in the form of an email, letter or report. Out of 15 marks, 6 are awarded for content, while the remaining 9 are awarded for Language.

Success in situational writing hinges on whether you have managed to cover all 6 content points and whether you understand the context, target audience, and purpose of the response. Of course, grammatical, spelling and punctuation mistakes can cost you precious Language marks.

PSLE 2022 Situational Writing Task

PSLE English Composition (40 marks; 20%)

For the composition, students are given a topic and three associated pictures. They must write at least 150 words (usually in the form of a narrative) using one, two or all the pictures. Out of 40 marks, 20 are awarded for Content and 20 for Language.

To achieve top scores in content, ensure your story is creative, engaging, well-developed, and coherent. For high language marks, focus on using a wide range of vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and maintaining accurate grammar and punctuation throughout your writing.

PSLE English Paper 2: Language Use and Comprehension

Paper 2 overview.

The PSLE English Paper 2 makes up a whopping 47.5% of the PSLE English marks. It’s divided into 2 booklets: Booklet A and Booklet B and students are given 1hr and 50 mins to complete it. Booklet A comprises multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Listed below is the breakdown of this booklet:

Booklet A (Total Marks: 28; 14% of the total PSLE English marks)

  • Grammar MCQ: 10 marks (5%)
  • Vocabulary MCQ: 5 marks (2.5%)
  • Vocabulary Cloze MCQ: 5 marks (2.5%)
  • Visual Text Comprehension MCQ: 8 marks (4%)

Booklet B, on the other hand, challenges students with open-ended questions. Here are the subcomponents:

Booklet B (Total Marks: 67; 33.5% of the total PSLE English marks)

  • Grammar Cloze: 10 marks (5%)
  • Editing for Spelling and Grammar: 12 marks (6%)

This section, comprising 10 MCQs, tests students’ understanding of various grammar concepts including subject-verb agreement, tenses, prepositions and more. Look out for tricky questions involving verbs of perception, perfect tenses and gerunds.

PSLE English Vocabulary MCQ (10 marks; 5%)

In the vocabulary MCQ segment consisting of 10 MCQs, students’ extensive and deep vocabulary knowledge is put to the test. Simply memorising a list of words and their meanings won’t suffice; it’s the understanding of the subtle nuances among words that is crucial.

Students are given a passage with 5 blanks to be filled with an appropriate word. Reading the entire passage first is imperative to understanding the context. Beyond merely considering the meaning of the words, pay attention to their connotation and intensity.

PSLE English Visual Text Comprehension MCQ (8 marks; 4%)

Here, students are presented with visual materials such as advertisements, posters, or informational brochures. They must answer 8 MCQ questions based on the text. The VTC is straightforward once you’ve mastered the following:

• Understanding the purpose of the test • Detail-oriented reading • Knowing common time expressions • Utilising the process of elimination

PSLE English Grammar Cloze (10 marks; 5%)

The Grammar Cloze is similar to Grammar MCQs in that students are tested on their understanding of various grammar rules like prepositions, pronouns, connectors and more. This component features a passage with 10 missing words, and students must select the appropriate word from a provided box to fill in these blanks. Although it is an easy section to score in, beware of questions which test your knowledge of phrasal verbs and tricky tenses!

PSLE English Editing (12 marks; 6%)

This section presents students with a passage containing 12 underlined words. Students must correct these words, which consist of six grammatical errors and six spelling mistakes. Knowing tenses, word forms and connectors is necessary for scoring well.

PSLE English Comprehension Cloze (15 marks; 7.5%)

The dreaded comprehension cloze is arguably one of the trickiest sections of Paper 2. Students are required to read a passage and fill in 15 blanks with the most appropriate word. Many fail to recognise that this section is not a guessing game. One must make use of contextual clues in the passage and employ forward and backward reading to derive the answer. In addition, knowing synonyms and antonyms, collocations, phrasal verbs and idioms can boost your marks.

PSLE English Synthesis/Transformation (10 marks; 5%)

The Synthesis and Transformation section consists of 5 questions, each worth 2 marks. It requires you to combine two given sentences and/or change a given sentence without losing its original meaning. Questions can test you on the following:

  • Reported Speech
  • Active and Passive Voice
  • Word Transformation
  • Conditionals
  • Relative Pronouns

PSLE English Comprehension OE (20 marks; 10%)

In this section, students are presented with a passage, followed by a series of 10 questions that require them to extract relevant information, make inferences, and synthesise knowledge from the text. It’s important to craft well-structured and grammatically correct responses that directly address the questions. Take note that no ½ marks are awarded here, so precision is key!

 Here are some common question types:

  • Factual questions
  • Inference questions
  • True/ False questions
  • Cause and Effect questions
  • Referencing questions
  • Vocabulary questions

PSLE English Paper 3: Listening Comprehension

This 35-minute paper consists of 20 MCQ questions and carries a 10% weightage. 7 recordings, in the form of advertisements, news reports and interviews, are played twice. Scanning the questions beforehand, practicing active listening and jotting down key points are useful strategies to tackle this section.

PSLE English Paper 4: Oral Communication

The PSLE English Oral Examination assesses a student’s proficiency in reading and speaking. Students are given 5 minutes of preparation time while the actual exam takes approximately 10 minutes. It accounts for 30 marks, or 15% of the overall PSLE English marks and is divided into two parts:

  • Reading Aloud (10 marks; 5%)
  • Stimulus-Based Conversation (20 marks; 10%)

PSLE Oral Reading Aloud (10 marks; 5%)

Students must read a given passage to an examiner. Points are awarded for fluency, articulation and pronunciation. It’s important to read with the right intonation, tone and pacing to earn high marks. Remember not to mumble or freeze when you see unfamiliar words. Be confident throughout!

PSLE Oral Stimulus-based Conversation (20 marks; 10%)

Students are also given a visual stimulus in the form of an advertisement, a poster, a photo etc. They will then be asked 3 questions related to the stimulus. Generally, the first 2 questions are directly related to the stimulus. To answer them, you need to incorporate the details given in the picture and justify your opinion. The last question is broadly related to the theme of the visual stimulus. Sharing personal anecdotes, reflecting on past experiences and discussing current affairs related to the topic are encouraged. Students are tested on their ability to express their ideas and carry out a conversation seamlessly.

Leaving Cert 2024 teacher tips: Peruse past marking schemes and rest well ahead of English paper one

Tips for Leaving Cert English Paper 1 - Siobhan O'Donovan

Leaving Cert candidates are now in the final stretch before the start of the exams.

First up, it’s English paper one tomorrow – and two teachers have shared their top tips on last-minute preparation.

Ignore the hype, sleep soundly and take a social media break

Siobhan O’Donovan, who teaches English at the Patrician Academy in Mallow, Co Cork, is advising students to shut out unnecessary noise ahead of the exam.

“A lot can be done in the run-up, even for a student who maybe hasn’t put in a great deal of work throughout the year,” she said.

“Remember to eat well, sleep well and get some exercise outside. Also, consider taking a break from social media, as it tends to be a little crazy around exam time and is really of no use.”

Kate Barry, an English teacher at Loreto Secondary School in Fermoy, Co Cork, said: “Try to keep to your regular school-time routine. Sleep is essential to learning, so make sure you get around eight hours a night and keep your phone out of your bedroom.

“Take regular breaks and during these, it’s important to get out into the fresh air.”

Look to the past for pointers

Ms O’Donovan recommends sitting down and studying past marking schemes. These are available on the State Examinations Commission website.

“Study the marking schemes of past years, where the scheme lists the typical features of the genre that the examiner is looking for when correcting,” she said.

“They contain all the types of answers and the vocabulary necessary to handle part A of English paper one.”

Ms Barry echoed those sentiments, saying: “Looking at past years, you’ll see that a variety of essay types usually appear, including discursive essays, personal essays, articles and speeches.”

She also advises candidates to study in a room “as close to exam conditions as possible, either at home in a quiet room, or in school, if it offers this facility”.

Calmness is the key

“On the day of the exam, try to be calm and confident,” says Ms O’Donovan. “Make sure to read the theme of the paper on the front, as it gives an insight into the content of the paper.

“Read the full paper quickly and choose the right question. It can often be the case that a candidate rushes into the comprehension section only to realise too late that a different one would have suited better.

“It’s so important to remember that you may not do a question A and B from the same comprehension. If this happens, both will be marked but the candidate will only get the marks for one – the highest one.

“So, part A and part B must be from different texts. When it comes to the composing section, again take a few minutes to choose wisely.

“Remember the techniques of the genre of essay you’re writing and use them. Relax into the exam and try to remember we (the examiners) will reward good material. Give it your best shot.”

Ms Barry also encourage pupils not to rush in. She said: “Once you get the paper, look first at the composition section and choose which essay you’ll write.

“This allows your brain to start coming up with ideas, even while you’re completing question A and B.

“There are two aspects to consider when approaching the Leaving Cert English essay – the format and the content.

“You will probably have already decided if the short story option is a good one for your strengths, but apart from this, it’s important to keep an open mind.

“Don’t go in thinking ‘I’m definitely going to go for the article/the speech/the personal essay etc’, as the topics on the day might not suit you.

“Adopt what English teacher Sarah Kelly, of Bandon Grammar School, calls an ‘ideas first’ approach and choose the topic where you feel you have the most to say.”
