Paper 2 - Specimen Question Response #1

How do two of the works you have studied portray the struggle to be understood?

Communication and collaboration are two essential qualities of human nature, but different perspectives and cultural differences continue to lead to challenges of communication and the struggles to be understood in life. This is reflected in literature, too, and can be seen in Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s graphic novel V for Vendetta and Emile Zola’s Therese Raquin. Through the use of the symbol of the roses in V for Vendetta, the didactic features of the naturalism movement in Therese Raquin, and the plights of the protagonists and other key characters in both novels, both works suggest that, unless struggles to be understood are overcome, the future for humanity could be quite bleak.

Lloyd and Moore employ symbolic roses to represent life and hope amidst apocalyptic despair. The rose is first introduced to the reader in Book 1 as V enters the Priest’s house with a white rose already plucked. The rose is initially given to the people V murders out of revenge, a reminder of the people like him harmed in the concentration camps for being minorities. In Larkhill Camp, V grows roses, and uses their fertilizer ultimately to destroy and escape the camp. By the end of the novel, as V’s social experiment moving through Anarchy to Anarchism, of reinventing society in the interests of all, comes to fruition, the rose symbolises new life, something beautiful and natural blooming out of the rubble of despair and destruction. He leaves Evey Hammond with a stark warning, though, when he says that ‘we, as gardeners, must beware… For some seeds are the seeds of ruin, and the most iridescent blooms are often the most dangerous’. Essentially, he says that new seeds represent new life, that a new day will always dawn and change is possible, but warns her of the usual human mistakes: of trusting the most beautiful, most sweet-talking leaders (‘iridescent blooms’) rather than taking a more collective responsibility, will lead to the familiar outcomes. Thus the rose both symbolises V’s own struggle to be understood, leading to his incarceration for being an outsider and his revenge for that incarceration, as well as the easy manner in which humans allow themselves to misunderstand others through their attractive presentation rather than their true intentions.

By contrast, Zola pioneers a literary movement in order to adapt the very purpose of literature in order to explore the reasons why people behave as they do, being successful or struggling with interacting and understanding each other accordingly. In his Preface to the Second Edition, Zola says that ‘he had believed, naively, that this novel might do without a preface,’ but that ‘the critics ha[d] given this book a hostile and indignant reception’ because they didn’t understand that in the novel Therese Raquin, he ‘set out to study, not characters, but temperaments’. Zola himself argues that, in pioneering the movement of Naturalism, his characters are ‘human animals’ and he is employing certain settings, situations and temperaments that then display how humans behave with each other. Zola states directly that ‘my objective first and foremost was a scientific one’, and thus it is argued that he is using literature to predict human behaviour. A character with a nervous temperament like Therese, coupled with the lazy peasant, Laurent, captured in the dingy setting of Passage du Pont Neuf, and in a passionate, forbidden affair - evidenced by their first act of lovemaking being ‘silent but brutal’ - will inevitably lead, according to Zola, to a downward spiral and the possible sequence of events that follows. Therese and Laurent become ‘murderers’ and ultimately kill themselves. However, overriding this is Zola’s key purpose of using his novel as a form of social science, to explore human beings and how they are bound to misunderstand each other and lead complicated lives as a result.

Both authors use key characters’ struggles to be understood at climactic moments of the novels as integral to the advancement of the plot and to the ultimate resolution of their plights. After discovering the truth about her son’s death, Madame Raquin - by now a paralysed invalid - had been ‘fervently looking forward’ to the set-piece Thursday night gathering so she could attempt to unmask the murderers. Despite Laurent’s confidence that ‘she’s hardly going to start blabbing to them’, Madame Raquin indeed gained the attention of the group and began spelling out the names of Therese and Laurent, making ‘the murderers… crazed with terror’. However, at the moment of highest tension, she failed to make herself understood, as ‘the avenging hand… fell back into a spasm’ and the moment was lost. By contrast, in V for Vendetta it is Evey Hammond who goes on a journey of discovery and understanding as V tricks her into thinking she is incarcerated and ‘tortures’ her. When she discovers the truth, Evey is broken by learning it was V all along, while he claims to be ‘set[ting her] free’ from the ‘prison’ she’s been in ‘all her life’. This metaphor suggests she is blind to the truth of the world and he has had to educate her through tough means. However, his ambiguity in manner leads her to say, ‘you think you’re so good that you don’t have to make sense,’ and, ‘nothing you say means anything’. He is, then, intentionally creating a struggle for her to understand him, in order for her to learn about herself and the world, something she sees and does at the end of the novel.

Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘Every step towards the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering and struggle’. In order for societies to be most effective, human beings have had to strive to overcome their struggles to understand each other in order to learn the truth about themselves, about the world, and in order to live and work together more effectively. V for Vendetta is an explicitly politically-motivated novel which expresses this through the opaque behaviour and characteristics of its title character, while Therese Raquin is a literary study of temperaments and how certain conditions lead to certain outcomes, and how certain characters struggle to understand each other, to live together, and to share hidden truths more widely.

Individuals may struggle while trying to be understood, pursuing freedom as a response. It is essential for humans to find a way in which not only can they understand each other, but feel understood, otherwise as a consequence of this there could be various differences and unwillingness of groups to work with one another. This component is essential to the existence and survival of human beings. Authors David Lloyd, Alan Moor, and Emilie Zola, created pieces which help explore the concept of not being understood, and the consequences rising from this. It can be said that through the use of the mask as symbolism, in V for Vendetta, Therese’s characterisation in Therese Raquin, and literary genre in both with Dystopia and Naturalism, authors Alan Moor, David Lloyd, and Emilie Zola portray how the struggle to be understood leads to the inability to compromise and perusal of freedom.

Emile Zola portrays the struggle to be understood through characterisation in Therese Raquin. Therese was a character which was misunderstood by her familiars, she would remain silent during most occasions, without her opinion taken into account. Yet, when Laurent appeared in her life he triggered the uncovering of a new, not seen side of Therese to the reader in which one could see her resentment towards her husband and her aunt. After years Therese at last reveals to the reader how, “ I would have preferred abandonment to their hospitality, I had a desperate need for wide-open spaces; as a little girl, I dreamt of roaring barefoot along dusty roads”.  The extract above demonstrates Therese’s desperation towards this family, although they had saved her from facing poverty, she would have still chosen to be abandoned. Therese is constantly pushed around without being able to be given a chance for her opinion, as a result she holds resentment and bitterness towards her familiars throughout her entire life. Once she sees an escape out of this life it is clear that she would take any means necessary to finally be liberated and free. This shows the desperation Therese had as she clearly wanted to be understood, and once she felt like she was, she would even kill to change her life and head it towards what she wanted it to look like. All in all, Thereses specific characteristics being presented to this situation made her want to take an extreme measure that would make her feel understood at once, showing the complexity of beings and how far some could go for comfortability and happiness.

Alan Moor and David Lloyd use symbolism to portray the struggle to be understood. V for Vendetta is a novel which shows a society where there were no minorities or people of color, and the population was oppressed by their government. V is a character which due his difference, and inability to fit the perfect society with ‘ideal people’ the right wing government wanted to achieve is cast away to a concentration camp to be tested on. The incapability of the government to understand others which are not what they deem as superior, and different, is what greatly inspires V to pursue freedom through anarchy. V utilizes a mask to represent that what he is pursuing is greater than just himself, “Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof.”. The symbol of the mask is essential throughout the entirety of the comic, as it shows that there is an idea which rose due to several factors. V, a survivor from this persecution, pursued freedom, not only individually, but for all, he wanted to dismantle the government and let the population be free after so many years of being oppressed, without understanding each other. The government essentially separated and held the population back, as the only one being able to stand up for themselves was V, which later spread his ideology.

Alan Moor, David Lloyd and Emile Zola use literary genre to depict the struggle to be understood. In these two novels there is use of  various features which help aid the creation of characters which are struggling in their environment, and how they deal with this. Irrespective of their environment, there is the same outcome of the two, individuals who want freedom after suppressing their feelings. Emile Zola used genre as he showed that the human nature of these characters in this specific situation was inescapable, and eventually would occur one way or the other In "Therese Eaquin," I have sought to study temperaments and not characters. In that lies the entire book. I have selected personages sovereignly dominated by their nerves and their blood, destitute of free will, led at each act of their life by the fatalities of their flesh.”. Alan Moor, and David Lloyd use dystopia in the novel where the world is controlled by a far right government with extremist ideas, essentially suppressing everyone's feelings to not be understood. One of the government's recurring phrases was “Strength through unity and faith”, ironically, as without individuals being understood there is no unity.

Humans are complex beings which mainly desire to be understood by others. At times some individuals may struggle as everyone is different, therefore leading to differences with one another. If people cannot manage to get past their differences and understand each other, there is no collaboration or work from either party. V for Vendetta and Therese Raquin depict this idea of the struggle to be understood and what it does to a person which oppresses their feelings in such a way. With V for Vendetta using symbols, Emile zola using characterisation, and both using literary genre they make it clear and highlight the consequences of not being understood on individuals.

Examiner's Comments

This essay has enormous strengths. It makes clear, analytical points that address the question with relevance, and some of the analysis and evaluation - the presentation and deconstruction of evidence - is very effective. The third paragraph is a little too general even though it is effective in ensuring the comparative nature of the essay. And there are language slips, including discussing works and authors in the past rather than conventional present tense. Overall, though, a strong essay.

IB English Paper Two – Everything You Need to Know To Ace the Exam

English Paper 2 Exam Tips - Lanterna Education

Written by Jay ayliffe

When it comes to Paper 2 for IB English Lit/Lang and Lit, there are several things that students often find challenging. Some common reactions to seeing a Paper 2 for the first time include:

  • ‘The questions don’t make any sense!’
  • ‘It’s too broad – I don’t know what they want me to say’
  • ‘There’s no way I’m going to be able to remember the right quotes for that!’

Now, these are understandable reactions! Paper 2 can seem a little wacky and abstract, especially after the more relatively straightforward Paper 1 exam. However, if you take the time to unpack what the IB is looking for and follow the tips below, you’ll find that Paper 2 isn’t that bad. With the right preparation, it can be pretty straightforward, after all!

what is the English Paper 2 Exam?

In a nutshell, the IB asks you to write a comparative essay in response to a prompt.

Over the course of the year, whether you are a Lit or a Lang/Lit Student, you will have studied a series of texts. These may be poems, novels, plays or short stories.  The Paper 2 exam allows you to draw upon these texts, using them to explore similarities and differences in relation to the central theme of the prompt. For instance,

“Not rounding off, but opening out.” Comment upon the way writers deal with the ending. In your answer, you should refer to two or three texts you have studied.”

Or how about?

Writers utilise a number of different devices within their works, including using time jumps or other non-linear structures. Considering two texts, discuss how writers use structural elements in unusual or interesting ways to shape meaning.”

Okay, these questions may seem a little mean at first, but you only have to answer one question! You will have 1.5 hours if you are a Standard Level (SL) student and 2 hours if you are an English Lit/Lang Higher Level (HL) student! (If you want some more help breaking down the question, check out this helpful blog on command terms )

The key thing to do here is to provide a structured and detailed answer that offers a balanced and meaningful discussion of both texts. Ideally, this means you are identifying 2-3 points of insight from the central questions relevant to both texts. This allows you to write 4-6 chunky paragraph s in answer to the question, in addition to the MANDATORY introduction and conclusion.

What do I need to do to prepare for the Paper 2 Exam?

First of all, planning is essential ! You will not know which questions the IB will ask you before opening your exam. However, a quick look over papers from previous years will tell you about the common themes and techniques the IB loves to ask about. Broadly, you can categorise these questions into three groups:

ThemesTechniquesMeta-textual/Impact
Authority, love, power, comedy, conflict, underdogs, happiness*Use of time, beginnings and endings, conventions, paradoxes*Social message, author’s relationship to characters/audience*
E.g.

Why you should learn more than 2 works

Now, you have a rough idea of what they could ask you. Next, you should go back to your set of texts. Determine which combination of works would work best for you if you had to answer one of these questions.

Some students commit to just learning two works. They rely on their in-depth knowledge of these texts to answer any question that may come up. I understand their approach, but I think having at least two possible combinations of texts available is best (e.g. Text A+B, A+C, or B+C). This ensures you are best prepared to answer questions with reference to the most relevant works.

Also, you certainly don’t want to be stuck giving yourself more to do by exaggerating the importance of one theme/technique in a work because that’s the only one you know!

With these choices made, you can start compiling quotes, context and moments from the texts, which you can use as evidence. Aim for 4-5 really good points of information that you can expand upon in your essay. Even better, if you already know that, you can directly compare/contrast it with a quote/technique from the other piece of work.

For instance, with my Paper 2 exam, I found it helpful to organise my notes in the following layout:

Jay's preferred layout for his notes to prepare for English Paper 2 - Lanterna Education

As you can see, I have prepared a mixture of quotations and techniques that I could draw upon for this question on endings. It also allows me plenty of room to elaborate on individual points when I develop new ideas and connections.

Practising Paper 2 Questions

Practising exam questions will help you feel confident writing Paper 2s. Through practice, you will also learn to adapt your prepared notes to specific prompts.

However, before getting stuck in, spend a bit of time thinking about your introductions. An excellent introduction will outline everything you want to cover in your essay, which is key to ensuring you are heading in the right direction. Have a look at the one below and think about all the different criteria it is attempting to reach:

As in all art forms, the ending of a play usually serves to resolve its central conflict, to highlight character development and to convey to the audience a final, lasting message which summarises the major themes and motifs previously seen in the performance. Wilde’s’ Importance of Being Earnest (Importance) appears to display all of these conventions as by the end of the play, the central protagonist, Jack emerges triumphant. However, theatre, as a highly versatile and varied art form, can and has been used to explore radical modernist and postmodernist approaches to art such as in Samuel Beckett’s play Waiting for Godot where these traditional conventions of an ending are questioned. Indeed, while Wilde’s play follows the traditional conventions of an ending in theatre almost to the point of comedic lunacy, Beckett’s play seeks to completely dismiss them . This is undoubtedly the result of the two theatrical productions differing purposes and cultural contexts where Importance clearly belongs to the theatrical genre of comedy of manners while Waiting for Godot is part of the theatre of the absurd.  Yet despite these radically different approaches, both highlight the importance of endings as a tool for a playwright to reiterate their main message and to provide the audience with a particular impression to take away. Sample Paper 2 Introduction by Jay

Criterion A: Knowledge, Understanding and Interpretation

  • A clear statement about the writer’s choices and the effects of literary devices. It also sets up the basic structure of the essay to cover three core elements: conflict resolutions, character development and lasting message.

Criterion B: Analysis and Evaluation

  • Unambiguous comparative statements about how and why the two texts differ regarding their endings, as well as share similarities.

Criterion C: Focus and Organisation

  • The student introduces two key texts and their authors. There is a balanced description of both works, which the student will continue in the main body.

Criterion D: Language

  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar is consistently accurate. The student uses a range of vocabulary and relevant, literary/text-specific terminology with precision.

Try to build a habit of writing essay plans with a short introduction. Doing this will help you to turn your notes and ideas into written answers more easily. It will also be an excellent resource for future exam prep! (Also, if you need help putting in the time for revision, these apps can be really helpful!)

6 Final Tips

Here are 6 final top tips to keep in mind next time you head into your Paper 2 English Exam!

  • Develop Strong Time Management: Time management is crucial during the exam. Allocate a specific amount of time for planning (no more than 20 minutes) and stick to it. Make sure you give yourself enough time to talk about both works in a balanced way.
  • Annotate The Question: Highlight key phrases and jot down initial thoughts. These annotations will ensure that you are sticking to the question and mean you won’t have to start with a blank page!
  • Develop a Strong Thesis: In the comparative essay, a well-crafted thesis is essential (Click here to learn more about writing a brilliant thesis ). Clearly state your argument and how you will be referring to both texts in your answer. This will guide your essay and keep it focused.
  • Compare Throughout: Every paragraph should start with a comparative, e.g. Both texts explore the theme of loneliness or Unlike text A, Text B utilises its setting to highlight . These topic sentences set you up to dig deeper and explore how these different writers’ choices contribute to the overall meaning and message of the texts.
  • Incorporate Literary Devices: Demonstrate your knowledge of literary devices by incorporating them into your analysis. Discuss how these devices enhance the texts and support your arguments.
  • Proofread and Revise: Allocate some time at the end of the exam to proofread your essays. Check for grammar, spelling, and clarity. Ensure that your ideas flow smoothly and coherently.

Final Thoughts

I hope this all helps! Remember to prepare for the prompts, test your introductions and focus on critical analysis. SPM English Paper 2 - Section 1

Section 1 is about writing an e-mail which is only a short communicative message with only a limitation of 80 words . In this part, you have no choice but to do it by answering directly to the point and the suggested time is 20 minutes .

Here are some of the most important tips:

  • Don’t ever miss the format, e.g. the email address, the subject, introduction, conclusion and closing part.
  • For the introduction, try to be simple and interesting to attract the readers, for example: I hope you are doing well!
  • Think about your main points by using 5W1H (What, Who, Where, When, Why, How) and keep the points concise.
  • Do remember to make closing and signature, e.g. I am looking forward to speaking to you next time! Bye!

Example Question:

You received an email from your friend, Amanda who is planning a trip during the school holidays.

What are you doing during your school holidays? My family and I are planning a trip to Langkawi Island. You went there with your family last year, didn’t you? How was your trip? What did you do there? Are there any places we should go?

Do let me know.

This is an example question. In this question, it asks about how the trip is and some suggestions about the holidaymakers in Langkawi. Do take note that you are writing to Amanda.

Sample Answer:

To: [email protected]

We had so much fun there! It is suggested to take a cable car and go up to the Langkawi Sky Bridge where the view is breathtaking! Why don’t you go on an island hopping tour to Pulau Dayang Bunting? The island looks like a silhouette of a pregnant woman lying down and trying to swim in the freshwater lake there! You may visit Pulau Beras Basah and relax on the soft sandy beach! You’ll enjoy it!

Essay Guidelines

INTRODUCTION

  • State some general problem statements, e.g. Malaysians were reported to read an average of two pages per year since 2005 which is rather disappointing. Knowing how significant it will have a tendency to affect the entire nation, it is high time we should discuss the benefits of reading newspapers as well as its usefulness.

1 st POINT:

  • Reading newspapers is a good source of information in terms of news, sports, general issues and international issues.
  • One should prefer to get news from a more reliable source such as a newspaper.
  • It keeps us informed of all the latest world events on war, economy, political issues and celebrity gossips.
  • Be better equipped to form opinions on things currently happening around us.

2 nd POINT:

  • Newspaper articles prompt you to think critically – to form opinions- help students to gain more linguistic confidence which will be expressed in writing and conversation.

  • Such a habit should be inculcated from young.

  • Take note of the vocab and grammar you use in which most of the time, students will lose their marks.
  • Always remember!!! An essay includes INTRODUCTION + 3 POINTS + CONCLUSION . Don’t ever miss one of them!

HERE is some tips when writing essays:

Long Essay Guidelines

INTRODUCTION:

  • It is better to expose the current issue or crisis that can attract the reader. Elaborate more on how the current topic has a significant effect on people/ surrounding. Hence, it is high time we should highlight …
  • Sometimes, you may use idioms/ adages as your opening to make your essay more attractive! E.g. As an old adage goes, “Health is wealth” and this goes to show how vital that each and every of us should have a healthy body in which the topic we are discussing today should not be hidden from the public .
  • Directly tell the reader the problem and the discussion of this topic, e.g. how can it be solved? / here is some useful tips for handling such condition./ Hence, we shall now discuss some of the reasons why we ought to …
  • Don’t write too long!
  • At least, you should have prepared three main points! Try to sketch your ideas out before you start writing so that you may have a clear mindset of what you are writing instead of going halfway wrong.
  • Use the word connection for a better connection of your sentences: First and foremost, Next, Moreover, Furthermore, Moving on, Instead, In conclusion, Last but not least…
  • Try to be formal: It is said that…/ It is always being discussed that…/ Thus, the highlighted topic provides us…/ It is said without fear of…
  • Use some attractive vocabulary & idioms if you can!
  • Elaborate your main points using this formula:
  • Deep reason? Why again
  • A little more about the discussion: using idioms/vocab to highlight it
  • Conclusion for this idea
  • It is said that having sufficient rest and sleep do help us maintain good health and inculcate lifelong health habits. According to a survey conducted recently, students seem to face strenuous homework and dreadful exams if they do not have enough sleep and rest, thus, they could not cope with their studies easily. Lack of sleep may lead us to lots of exposed problems, for example impairing attention. As an old adage, “Rest well for accomplishing a longer journey”. Thus, we should have enough rest and sleep in order to give us more energy to welcome a brand new day of challenge.
  • The above sample might be a bit long, yet, it is perfect enough in transferring the message in a very complete way.

CONCLUSION:

  • For the conclusion part, it is suggested that students should conclude once again all the points you have mentioned above. Then, adding your hope or maybe some roles of related authority like parents and school, what they can do to improve the condition.
  • You may add on idioms and phrases at last as your closing to attract the reader.
  • In conclusion, there are many benefits one can gain from reading newspapers and this is the reason why this habit should be inculcated from young. Thus, school should play their roles by working closely with parents to get involved in reading newspapers with their children at home for the sake of their future.

Bellingham brilliance papers over cracks in England's Euro 2024 case

Jude Bellingham

England's quest to end 58 years of hurt at Euro 2024 remains alive thanks to one moment of Jude Bellingham brilliance, but the Three Lions failed to look like future European champions in sneaking past Slovakia 2-1.

Another embarrassing exit for English football at a major tournament was looming in Gelsenkirchen until Bellingham's acrobatic effort in the 95th minute broke Slovak hearts.

For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel.

A minute into extra-time, Harry Kane then completed the comeback to set up a meeting with Switzerland on Saturday in the quarter-finals.

However, any excitement among the England fan base at ending up on the perceived weaker side of the draw was drained away by another turgid performance from Gareth Southgate's men.

England arrived in Germany hyped as pre-tournament favourites thanks to a squad stacked with attacking talent.

Slovakia coach Francesco Calzona insisted on the eve of the game that Southgate is working with "the best squad at the Euros".

But a team featuring the Bundesliga's top scorer Kane, the Premier League's player of the year Phil Foden and a recently crowned Champions League winner in Bellingham has been laboured in possession and easy to defend against.

Until Bellingham's late intervention, England had scored just two goals in four games, while the deficiencies of a makeshift back line were also exploited by Slovakia early on.

The side ranked 45th in the world had already spurned two big chances before Ivan Schranz strolled through the heart of the England defence to slot home his third goal of the tournament on 25 minutes.

England fans dominated all but a small section of the 50,000 capacity AufSchalke Arena and made their disillusionment heard as boos greeted the half-time whistle.

Southgate's men marginally improved after the break but bar a header Kane sent wide from a free-kick and a Declan Rice shot from distance that came back off the post, they had created little as Slovakia sat deep to defend their lead.

After a 0-0 draw against Slovenia that had guaranteed top spot in Group C, Southgate had bemoaned an "unusual atmosphere" as he was pelted with empty beer cups by disgruntled supporters.

'Scoring goals is my release'

The England manager and his players were braced for an even more severe outpouring of rage until Bellingham produced a moment of brilliance that allowed him to answer his critics after two underwhelming performances against Denmark and Slovenia.

"Playing for England, it's a lot of pleasure but you also hear a lot of people talk a lot of rubbish. It's nice when you deliver you can give them a little bit back," said the Real Madrid star of his goal celebration.

"For me playing football, being on the pitch, scoring goals is my release and it's maybe a message to a few people."

Southgate was more understanding of the wave of criticism that is still set to come his side's way before they face the Swiss in Duesseldorf.

"We're putting a plaster over things and giving young players opportunities," said Southgate.

"We're somehow finding a way. I can imagine how everyone is going to react even though we've won but we are still in there. The one thing that cannot be questioned is the desire, the commitment, the character."

The spotlight is on Southgate to find a solution over the next six days to avoid failing again to deliver major tournament glory at his fourth attempt.

Switzerland made light work of beating holders Italy 2-0 on Saturday and are a significant step-up in quality from Slovakia.

The England boss hailed the impact of his substitutes.

Eberechi Eze and Ivan Toney played a part in Kane's winning goal, while Cole Palmer added some thrust from midfield.

However, the fact it took 66 minutes for Southgate to make any changes and his stubbornness in starting 10 of the same 11 in all four games so far has left his judgement open to question.

Bellingham's intervention ensures Southgate will take charge of his country for the 100th time in the quarter-finals.

But England will need to be much improved if he is to stay in his job beyond the century mark.
