Essay On Parents

The influence of parents on children's life is significant, we are because they are. They are responsible for giving birth as well as bringing them up in a healthy way. Right from the day a child is born, parents take care of their every need and groom them to become effective members of society. They are essential to each stage of a child's development. Parents are givers of love, support, care and direction which is needed for one to move forward in life. Nothing is more reassuring and calming for a person than their parentsā€™ arms, no matter how old they get.

For a youngling, parents are providers of everything. From the basic needs of food and personal hygiene, love and care, to all material needs and requirements. Parents toil hard in their respective occupations to give the best possible lives to their children. They do all in their power to make their children all their wishes.

First Teachers | Parents are a child's first teachers, and teach the essence of integral living. The lessons a child learns by observing their parents and listening to them are invaluable, and their real value is often understood after growing up and seeing some of life. It is from parents that children learn to face difficult situations and challenges in life.

Givers Of Love | Unconditional love and acceptance from parents is essential for the healthy development of any child into an adult. A child, whatever age they might be, is likely to feel more motivated to study, work, and achieve their goals if they know they have their parents to fall back upon. Some of the renowned psychologists of the world have established that the quality of oneā€™s relationship with their parents has a huge impact on the kind of relationships they form as adults.

They say, it is at the birth of the child that a parent is born. The art of parenting is difficult to develop and maintain, there is something new to learn at every step. There is no turning back once one signs up for it. Parents need to carefully manage their time and mindfully manage work and personal life, such that theyā€™re able to give adequate time to their children.

Parents As Providers | Like the human body needs food, water, and oxygen to survive, the body and the mind also need love, affection, and security to thrive. All these needs are, for the first few years of life, fulfilled solely by oneā€™s parents. Parents share all our joys and griefs. They laugh when we laugh, and cry when we cry.

Lifelong Companions | Parental influence on a child's growth is fundamental. The journey from childhood to adulthood is full of physiological, psychological, and social changes. It is easier and less of a pain for individuals to go through these changes and deal with the various challenges they bring, if the journey is backed by the unconditional acceptance and support of parents.

Remind Us Of Strengths | Parents try to provide the best of education to their children. It is said that it is oneā€™s parents who are the most well-aware of oneā€™s skills, strengths, and limitations. Whenever needed, parents remind us of our strengths and encourage us to steer through all the challenges that come our way.

My Relationship With My Parents

I live in a family of six, including my parents, grandparents, my younger brother, and me. My father is a businessman, he is a builder with the govt., while my mother is a homemaker. When I was younger, I used to closer to my mother, share everything with her, spend time with her, but extremely scared of my father. My father had a controlling nature and so I thought he would get angry if I shared anything with him.

My Father And I | But as I grew up, I saw my father encouraging me to hone my talents of dancing, singing, and swimming. He got me enrolled in the best classes for each of these in our locality and would make sure that he dropped me and picked me up from the classes everyday. I realised that my father wanted me to become the best version of myself and polish each skill and talent I possessed, so I could feel proud of myself. One day, one of our relatives commented on me being slightly overweight. My father sensed that I felt embarrassed and that it was wrong of my aunt to comment like that, and so he immediately told my aunt that his daughter would live the kind of life she wanted to and that no one should comment on her choices, in any way.

My Mother And I | My mother and I are like the closest of friends. Not a day goes when I donā€™t sit with her to discuss what happens in school and among my friends. She never judges me and only tries to handhold me in situations where she feels I feel challenged. We go for lunch to some nice place once in a week and also do some shopping during those outings. She cooks my favourite dishes for me and pampers me like a little baby.

Narrative Essay: I Love My Parents

Parents are the closest people that we have in our lives, whether we realize it or not. They love us not because we are smart, beautiful, successful or we have a good sense of humour, but just because we are their children. I, too, love mom and dad simply because they are my parents, but I think I would have felt the same even if they werenā€™t. I love who they are as people, each with their own individual traits ā€“ and, together, forming an amazing super-team thatā€™s made me who I am today and taught me what life is all about.

My mother is a cheerful, chatty perfectionist who seems to always find something to get excited about and who can talk for hours about animals and flowers. She is never afraid to speak her mind and she can be very convincing when she wants to. She sometimes get upset a bit too easily, but she is just as quick to forgive and forget. I love mom for all that she is ā€“ even when sheā€™s angry ā€“ for all that she has done for me, and for all that sheā€™s taught me. My mom has been through a lot throughout the years, but she always kept fighting. She taught me to never lose hope even in the direst of moments, and she showed me how to look for happiness in the small things. Sheā€™s been trying to teach me to be more organized as well, but hasnā€™t succeeded yet. I love her for that too.

My father is quiet, patient and calm, and he has an adorable hit-and-miss sense of humour. I may not always find his jokes that funny, but I love him for trying. Dad almost never gets angry and he is always polite, friendly and nice to everyone. He is not the one to verbalize emotions, but he always shows his feelings through sweet gestures and little surprizes. He is the pacifist in our family and never goes against momā€™s wishes, but he runs a large company witha firm hand. I love my father for all these characteristics and for all heā€™s sacrificed to build a better life for us. Heā€™s worked day and night to ensure we afford good education and have a rich, wonderful childhood, and he has passed up many great opportunities for the benefit of our family. I love dad because heā€™s taught me that you cannot have it all in life, but with hard work and dedication, you can have what matters most to you.

Mom and dad may be very different people, but they complement each other perfectly. Together, they formed a super-team that was always there ā€“ and, thankfully, still is – to provide comfort, nurturing, and support and help me grow as a person. Their complementary personalities bring balance in our family, and each of them steps in whenever they are needed the most. Together, they taught me to believe in myself and have turned me into a fighter. Their care and dedication towards me and each other has served as an example of what healthy relationships should be like, and I love and admire them for that.

I love my parents because they are my parents, my good friends, my heroes, my role models, my safe haven, my pillars of strength.I am who I am today thanks to them, and I know that their support and affection will play an essential role in what I will become in the future. All I can hope is that, when I have children of my own, I will be half as good a parent as they were to me.

My Parents Essay in English (1000 Words)

Parents are the most beautiful creations of God , and it is because of them that we are in this world. They gave us birth, and everything that we have today is because of our parents.Ā

Parents are the most important people in our lives, and there is no one else like them in this world. My parents love me more than anything else in this world.Ā

Most of the time, they donā€™t express their love directly, but we can easily recognise that. Most fathers donā€™t express their love for their children directly, but they love us more than they love themselvesā€” mothers , on the other hand, express love in every little thing.Ā

We need to love and respect them, too, as they deserve the same love and affection as we love them. They teach us to eat, walk, speak, and everything else that we need to learn as a child.

My Parents My Divine

Since the day of our birth, our parents have provided us with everything to keep us happy. They struggle in their everyday lives and work hard to give us the best they can.

They sacrifice their luxuries, their dreams, and even their precious belongings to provide us with food, education, clothes, and all our favourite items.Ā

They work hard for us throughout their lives and dedicate their lives to making our lives better and giving us a good lifestyle. Thatā€™s why we consider our parents to be the living God.Ā

Our Indian culture also signifies the importance of love, affection, and obligations towards our parents. This means we should treat our father and mother like God himself.

My Parents Love Me Lot

There is no doubt that parents love their children. Similarly, my parents also love me a lot. My mother cooks my favourite breakfast every morning, and then she makes me prepare to go to school .Ā

As soon as I come home, she gives me good food to eat. In the evenings as well, she offers me snacks, and sometimes she prepares some special items for dinner for me. She loves me and takes care of me throughout the day.Ā

On the other hand, my father guides me and teaches me basic things about our world, our society, and other important knowledge . He encourages me to do things and helps me to achieve my targets. He also loves me a lot.

My Parents Help Me In My Daily Activities

My father and my mother are both very active people. They work hard to keep the day going on. My mother wakes up early in the morning and prepares breakfast for the entire family. Then she keeps herself busy with other household chores.Ā

She gives me food, watches my clothes, cleans my school uniform, shoes, and other items. She makes sure that all my belongings are neat and clean. She also makes sure that I am healthy and physically fit; to this end, she gives me a cup of warm milk every evening.Ā

My father buys me my favourite ice cream while returning from school. He plays football with me and also helps me complete my assignments. He teaches me and helps me memorise the things I learned in school. This way, they help me in all my daily activities.

My Parents Are My Role Model

A role model is a person who has a powerful impact on our lives- a person that changes our thoughts and decisions about life. Whenever I think about a role model, the first person who comes to mind is my parents.Ā

They have all the qualities to be good parents. They are dedicated to their duty and are responsible. They are dedicated to their plans to give us a bright future.

I know that they are not perfect, nobody can be, but they have all the qualities and virtues required to be a good parent.

How I Help My Parents At Home?

There are many different activities in which I help my parents. As soon as I woke up, I got dressed, and then I helped my mom in the kitchen make breakfast. I put my books in the school bag and cleaned my room.Ā

I also help my mom clean plates, wash, and cut vegetables. I help her clean the rooms, furniture, and entire house. I help my father with marketing and cleaning bikes. Furthermore, I go with him to the market and assist him in buying things.Ā

I fill the water bottles in our house when they are empty, as we drink from bottles. In this manner, I like to help my parents whenever they need me.

10 Lines on My Parents Essay in English

  • Our parents gave us birth; it is because of them that we came into this world. Everything that we are today is because of our parents. They are surely our living God.
  • Our parents love us more than anything else in this world. They teach us to live and dedicate their lives to giving us a healthy and nourishing lifestyle.
  • From the day of our birth, they serve us with everything they can. They give us food to eat, provide us with an education , clothes, and all our basic needs.
  • My mother makes breakfast for me as soon as I wake up, and she makes sure that my school bag, my uniform, and all my other items are prepared to go to school.
  • My father goes with me to school early in the morning, and at noon, when school is over, he comes to pick me up.
  • I help my mom and dad with all their daily activities.
  • My mother and father have a powerful impact on my life; they help me make important decisions and change my thoughts.
  • No doubt, my parents are very busy with their daily activities, but they still find time for me, my brother, and my sister , and they spend time with us.
  • I love to be with my parents as they are very loving and caring, and they understand me better than anyone else.
  • I love my parents very much, and they too love me a lot.

Everyone loves their parents because they help them and protect them from many evils in this world. Our parents not only protect us and guide us on the right path, but they also make a lot of sacrifices for our well-being.Ā

I cannot describe the value that my parents have in my life. I am blessed that I had such a beautiful, loving, and caring father and mother.

They are indeed my divine, and I am blessed to live my life with them. I hope you likes this My parents essay in english for students and children.

Writing Compassionately about Parents

Image: silhouettes of an older couple sitting at a bus stop, seen from the back through frosted glass.

Today ā€™s post is by writer and editor Katie Bannon ( @katiedbannon ).

You may be familiar with the iconic opening line of Anna Karenina : ā€œAll happy families are alike. Each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.ā€

Many of us end up writing about our family dynamics in memoir and personal essays, whether we planned to or not. Family members, for better or for worse, are endlessly fascinating. But how do we write about our uniquely dysfunctional familiesā€”and our parents, in particularā€”without being petty? How can we craft rich portraits that show their full, flawed humanity?

The more complex, the better.

Readers respond most to complicated characters. Try to be as balanced as possible in your portrayal of your parents. Showing their redeeming qualities alongside their shortcomings will make them read as human on the page. As a species, we are full of contradictions, and your parent characters should be too.

Remember that itā€™s difficult for readers to connect with characters who appear one-dimensional. If your mother or father is coming across as either wholly good or wholly bad, the reader is likely to distrust you as a narrator. Readers might wonder if youā€™ve done the processing necessary to come to terms with who your parents are/were, and if personal grievances are causing you to portray them unfairly.

Readers are also highly attuned to moments when the narrator wants them to see a character a particular way, rather than allowing them to form their own judgments. A one-sided portrayal of a parent wonā€™t cause a reader to hate or love themā€”it will probably only make them detach from the narrative entirely. Capturing our parentsā€™ complexity isnā€™t about giving them a ā€œfree passā€ or sugar-coating their flaws. Itā€™s about ensuring our readers can feel invested in them as characters, and as a result, stay engaged in the narrative as a whole.

If youā€™re writing about a difficult parent, consider how you might add nuance and compassion to their portrayal by asking the following questions:

  • What might have motivated the parent to act the way they did? Was it protectiveness? Fear? Low self-esteem?
  • As an adult, what do you understand about the parent that you didnā€™t know when you were a child?
  • Think about the parentā€™s own trauma and family history. Can you draw connections between the parentā€™s actions/behaviors and their own past? The ways their own parents treated them?

On the flipside, maybe you idealize a parent. Sometimes this happens once parents have passed away; grief can make it difficult for us to recognize a parentā€™s shortcomings. But readers distrust perfect charactersā€”they often read as inauthentic or cartoon-like. To help dig deeper into your parentā€™s complexity, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What scares/scared this person? What is/was their greatest fear?
  • What do you imagine is/was their biggest regret in life?
  • What makes/made your parent feel embarrassed or ashamed?

Donā€™t tell us who your parents are. Show us instead.

Scenes allow us to watch your parents in action. We can see how they interact with you and others, observe their body language and mannerisms (biting fingernails, scowling, etc.), and hear the way they speak. Detail is at the heart of excellent character portrayals, and scenes are the perfect place to create the color and texture that brings parent characters to life.

Many of us harbor strong feelings toward our parents. This may result in a tendency to sum them up neatly in the narration: ā€œMy father was an angry man.ā€ ā€œMy mother dealt with a lifetime of guilt.ā€ While telling certainly has its place in memoir and personal essay, itā€™s often more effective to show us your parentsā€™ personalities through scenes.

Instead of telling us your father was an angry man, show us a scene of him throwing a plate across the kitchen. Paint a picture of his anger through the details: the furrowing of his brow, the thunderous sound of the plate smashing, the way his screams echoed off the walls. A scene like this will allow readers to feel your fatherā€™s rage in a visceral, immersive way.

Showing parents in scene also helps you avoid labeling them. Labels reduce your parents to a ā€œtype,ā€ diluting the nuance of your character portrayals. Mary Karr doesnā€™t call her parents ā€œalcoholicsā€ in her memoirs; instead, we see her pouring her parentsā€™ vodka down the drain. Scenes and hyper-specific details are what make your parents idiosyncratic and believable to a reader.

Need help showing your parents on the page? Try this writing exercise:

Write a scene about a time you fought with or were scolded by a parent. The key here is using details to humanize the parent and show the reader the dynamic between the two of you. Play with the tension between what the character of ā€œyou ā€ wants in the scene, versus what the character of your parent wants. Try to include the following elements:

  • Your parentā€™s physical characteristics
  • Your parentā€™s body language (twirling hair, stiffening of the shoulders, etc.)
  • Your parentā€™s speech (word choice, tone, cadence)
  • Your parentā€™s actions and reactions
  • Speculation about what your parent might have wanted and/or felt in the scene (which may be in conflict with what you felt/wanted)

Use ā€œtelling detailsā€ that capture your parentsā€™ essence.

Sometimes just one detail about a parent can speak volumes about who they are. These ā€œtelling detailsā€ could be as simple as a nervous tic, a favorite catchphrase, or the way they take their coffee. In my memoir, I describe how my father told waiters we had a show to catch (even when we didnā€™t) just to speed up the service. My mother insisted on standing on the outside of the group in family photos, doing her best to slip out of the photo entirely. Carefully chosen details evoke a huge amount about a parentā€™s life and identity.

Donā€™t neglect ā€œtellingā€ physical descriptors. Sometimes weā€™re so familiar with family members we donā€™t include the level of detail necessary for readers to see, hear, and feel them on the page. Details like how your parents dressed, the way they walked, what cherished objects they kept in their purse or wallet, can go a long way.

Which ā€œtelling detailsā€ about your parents will capture their essence on the page? Brainstorm ideas by filling in the blanks.

  • On a hot day, my mother/father always wore _______ and drank _______.
  • The object my mother/father most treasured was ______ because _______.
  • When we had company over, my mother/father would ________.
  • When my mother/father was annoyed, her/his voice would ________ and her/his face looked like ________.
  • Around the holidays, my mother/father would _________, but she/he would never ________.

Final thoughts

Parents have the potential to be your most vivid characters. Their nuances and contradictions provide incredibly fertile ground for writers. Still, writing compassionately about parents is no easy task. Applying character-focused craft techniquesā€”leaning into complexity, developing scenes, and using evocative detailsā€”is crucial to making parent characters believable and engaging for the reader. Only then can we hope to bring our parents, and their humanity, to life on the page.

Great piece. Really helpful!

Katie Bannon

I’m so glad it was useful, Ellen!

Elizabeth Adamcik-Davis

This teaching article has helped me very much. I have struggled for over a year at writing a memoir of my relationship with my father and how I have come to forgive him since his death 8 years ago. Thank you for publishing this. I am certain I will reread it several times as I work towards finishing the book.

I’m so glad to hear it helped, Elizabeth! Your story sounds really powerful — best of luck as you work toward completing the manuscript!

Naomi P Lane

Thank you for this insightful post. It was exactly what I needed at this juncture in my writing. I am writing about my sister and I had completely forgotten to do a physical description. Can you believe it?

I’m so glad this was useful, Naomi! And I can absolutely believe it — it took me multiple drafts of writing about family members before I realized I’d included almost no physical description of them…it’s easy to forget to do that on the page when we can picture them so well in our own minds!

How To Write An Essay On ‘My Parents’ for Classes 1, 2 and 3

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ā€˜My Parentsā€™ for Classes 1, 2 and 3

10-line essay on ā€˜my parentsā€™, short essay on ā€˜my parentsā€™, long paragraph on ā€˜my parentsā€™ for kids, what your 1st, 2nd or 3rd grader will learn from the essay.

Parents are the backbone of every child. Children learn most things from their parents because parents are every childā€™s first teachers. Kids connect with their parents in various ways. They observe them and donā€™t shy away from imitating them because their parents are their role models. So, when it comes to penning down their thoughts and feelings on their parents, most children take to it instantly because it is a topic they can relate to and enjoy writing about. This is why an essay on ā€˜My Parentsā€™ is commonly assigned to children in classes 1,2 & 3. But, some kids may struggle to express themselves while writing the composition. If your child is one of them, here are some ways they can unleash their inner author and get their creative juices flowing on paper.

The first step to help children write creatively is to get them to share their ideas on the topic and build them organically. They may also read to be able to write better, but their observation of their parents would help them make the essay unique. Below are some more key points to remember:

  • When you want to write a paragraph about your parents, you need to vocalise your personal feelings for them.
  • It is important to describe your parents as individuals, their influence and their attributes which are the driving forces.
  • Create a mental outline about how you want the essay to flow.
  • Start with an introduction, describe your parents, detail their roles, and elaborate on their influence.
  • While describing, it is important to mention what the parents do.
  • Make sure to write about how they manage their personal and professional lives.
  • Ensure to highlight any points about their strengths and how they motivate you.
  • Speak about the important events and occasions that you spend with your parents.
  • Mention any key secret that keeps you and your family happy.
  • Write a strong conclusion about how children learn from parents and must be there for them.

Children in classes 1 and 2 would have just begun their journey into the basics of creative writing. More than writing an essay or a paragraph, they will be asked to express points on the topic. Read on for some tips to help them get started:

  • My father and mother are the best parents.
  • My father is a banker, and my mother is a teacher.
  • My parents work very hard for the family and take care of us.
  • They look after the house and make sure they keep it neat and clean.
  • They share the responsibility to help me with my studies.
  • My parents are active, and they ride the bike, play football, and board games with me.
  • My parents love to cook. They help each other every day and cook delicious and healthy meals.
  • My parents and I love celebrating festivals, and we decorate the whole house together.
  • My parents take me out to parks, restaurants, and cinemas.
  • I love my parents as they do so much for me and look after me.

Children in grades 2 and 3 can be a bit more expressive than first graders. Hereā€™s an example of a short essay on the topic for you:

Parents are our best friends. We owe everything to our parents as they are the ones who bring us into the world. Like everyone, my parents are the most important people in my life. They make my life so simple and easy. I learn a lot from them, and they inspire me. My father is an engineer. He works for a large company. My mother is a banker. Both my parents rise early to ensure that my sister and I get to school on time. My father helps us get ready for school, and my mother starts cooking our breakfast and packing our lunch boxes. After they come home, my parents start preparing for the evening. They alternate the job of cooking and helping my sister and me with our studies. Once we finish dinner, we sit together as a family and watch TV. We make sure that we spend time together as a family every day, and over the weekends, we go out together to the park or the restaurant. My parents also make sure that we celebrate festivals and special occasions together. My parents work hard to have a good life, and they are my guiding force.

By class 3, children have a better understanding of the topic. They can also elaborate better and have a constructive template for their write-ups. They should ideally be able to write an introduction, main body and conclusion. Hereā€™s a sample for you:

A gift, a blessing, or a miracle ā€“ parents can be anything you want them to be. Parents sacrifice their entire life for their children to ensure that we get the best opportunities to lead good lives. They inspire us to be responsible, caring, loving, and respectful.

My parents are very special to me. My father is a professor in a college and did not have an easy childhood. He had to face many difficulties and managed to complete his education to become a professor. He loves his work and strives hard to make a living and make our lives comfortable. He also takes tuitions for poor children for a small fee to help them achieve their dreams. He takes my lessons every day and also enjoys playing games with me. He teaches me how to play cricket as he is a fan of the sport himself.

My mother is a housewife but takes tuition for children every evening. She gave up her career to look after me and started tutoring children at home. She decided to become a tutor to help my father with his expenses and save for my future. She spends her entire day looking after the house and doing household chores. Every evening, when my father and I return, she has a host of dishes prepared for us to eat. My parents make sure that we spend some time together as a family before going to bed. We either read the newspaper or a book before going to bed. We also spend some leisure time going out to the park, restaurant or cinemas over the weekends. My parents do everything to make my life comfortable and help me do my best at home and school.

It is a blessing to have parents as we learn a lot from them. They teach us qualities like sacrifice, love, affection, and respect, which help us become responsible members of society. It is important to listen to parents as they will always speak for our good. I feel lucky to have my parents by my side, who teach me to become a better version of myself every day.

A composition on ā€˜My Parentsā€™ is the best way to let a childā€™s imagination flow and their ideas transform into words. Children are very expressive in their speech, but it isnā€™t easy to write everything down. With some guidance, writing an essay or a few lines on this topic will help them channel their thoughts and feelings and improve their observation skills. Writing also gives kids a confidence boost, consolidates their literacy skills, and applies their reading skills in practice.

Most writers polish their writing skills by drafting essays. The examples given above would give your child the much-needed jumpstart to explore the world of writing. With these tips, your child can learn to develop ideas, plan their essays, write exciting details and make the final edits to write a brilliant essay.

The Parent Statement: What Not To Say

Much has been written about how to write a parent statement or essay for your childā€™s applications to private preschool or continuing Kā€“12 schools, but little has been written on what not to write.

For parents of preschoolers to students at older points of entry (and all the years in between), the finest example of admissions/application essay instructions can be found in the Common Application to U.S. colleges and universities.

The Common App asks applicants to write a statement of 650 words about anything ā€” anything at all ā€” so long as the statement is about them . You may think that sounds easy, but itā€™s not. For example, the finest Common App essay I have ever read was by a high school senior who, at age seven, started volunteering with kids diagnosed with cancer. The little girl became a national advocate for volunteering with sick children, appeared in the media, and won prestigious awards for her work. Over a decade, she worked with over 100 hospitalized children, befriending each one as well as their families. Her college essay, however, wasnā€™t about her work or the accolades she received for it. It instead detailed how she had stayed close to these parents and siblings, and talked about the emotional impact upon realizing that she was a link, often the final one, to the children the families had lost.

The same principles apply to parent essays. To make it easier, we ask parents to not use adjectives when they write and describe applicants. Terms like brilliant , gifted , caring , talented , and a host of others not only bore admissions committees, but scare them. If, for example, a parent genuinely feels his child is brilliant or gifted, is that same parent going to expect and demand ā€œspecialā€ treatment for that child if and when she is admitted to the school, taking teachersā€™ precious time away from the class at large? That is how to get rejected on the spot.

Try to write an anecdotally-driven parent statement.

For young children, a day in the life of your child is far more interesting and introductory than a list of his or her attributes as observed by Mom or Dad. For older kids, one or two academic or social experiences is a good suggestion for parent admissions statements, especially the effect these experiences had on the childā€™s development.

Do not write a statement longer than a single page.

There is much to say about every child, but school applications may not be the venue in which to say it. If schools receive 900 parent statements for a particular point of entry, how much do you believe actually gets read if the statements are overwhelmingly long? More saliently: will it get read at all?

Do not feel you have to impress.

Usually when parents write to impress, it has the opposite effect. The ā€œleaderā€ who is always first to finish the reading or art or math project and ā€œhelpā€ his peers in the classroom, while at the same time designs the groupā€™s imaginary games and activities, is often perceived as demanding and overbearing. This is a more central question: can that same leader also assume the role of follower, giving others a chance to shine and create?

Donā€™t try to conjure the future.

The kid who likes playing with a science kit is not necessarily destined to become a neuroscientist, just as the kid who enjoys writing about his summer vacation is not necessarily tomorrowā€™s Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Above all, donā€™t overstate.

A child who donates his or her gently used clothes or toys to charity is not Mother Theresa helping the poor, or Jimmy Carter building homes for humanity. She is a kid learning about charity and community service.

Balance what you write.

Few kids, especially younger children, actually sit around all day trying to perfect a task or learned skill, whether that be math, writing, art, or computer science, and if they do, they are missing out on many other aspects that childhood and adolescence exist to introduce them to. Admissions directors are famous for asking the magic question, ā€œWhat else is your child interested in?ā€ Schools do not teach one subject; they teach many.

Donā€™t brag, even inadvertently.

Your childā€™s interest in the ocean, marine life, and swimming is fine to write about as is his fascination with changing seasons, nature, and animals, as long as it isnā€™t preceded by the words: ā€œAt our vacation home …ā€

Finally, an admissions essay is not the place to list the people you know who are connected to a school (parent, alumni, board member, etc.). For the most part, admissions directors do not like the ā€œpowers that beā€ to dictate which students to accept, and that is the subtle message of a parent statement that name drops.

We are taught to be ourselves at every turn. Itā€™s hard to do in private school admissions, when you suspect that other parents are presenting better selves than they really are, and, of course, painting rosier, larger-than-life pictures of their children. Yet, being honest often yields the best results in terms of admission at virtually every point of entry. Think about the simple, beautiful message of the aforementioned Common App essay.
