Phd politics, introduction.

The deadline to apply for September 2024 entry is Monday 1 July 2024.

We warmly invite candidates to apply for a PhD in Politics

We are delighted that you are interested in doctoral research in our programme. We would like to highlight what's special about doctoral education in Politics (and/or) International Relations - or PIR - at the University of Edinburgh.

Approximately 60 members of PIR academic staff enjoy international reputations for their research and have won numerous teaching, research and advising awards. Their scholarship covers a diverse range of research areas on Scotland, Europe, and the world, and is published in highly-rated journals and books.

The department has a strong tradition of advising, informing and debating policy with key decision-makers at Scottish, UK, European and international levels, and has a notable concentration of political theorists.

Our Politics and International Relations department at the University of Edinburgh is one of the leading centres of research excellence in the UK, ranked in the top 10 in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). We are one of only three Politics and International Relations departments in the UK to achieve 100% 4* (the top ranking) for research environment. Amongst UK universities, we placed 7th in the 2022 QS World University Ranking by subject.

Our stimulating intellectual community

We have a large, vibrant, diverse, and international community of postgraduate students. We direct active research institutes, including:

  • Europa Institute
  • Centre on Constitutional Change
  • Centre for Science, Knowledge and Policy (SKAPE)
  • Centre for Security Research (CeSeR)
  • Centre for Ethics and Critical Thought (CRITIQUE)

PhD research in Politics and International Relations at Edinburgh is located in the School of Social and Political Science. The School benefits from the broader University of Edinburgh community of world-class researchers. A flourishing programme of events, seminars, and research groups complements our postgraduate courses and doctoral supervision.

Our dedication to students

We are deeply committed to our students at all levels and offer individualized supervision, mentoring, and support at all stages of the doctoral programme. Many postgraduate students work closely with staff on research and themselves publish independent papers. The department warmly welcomes the participation by our postgraduate community in our research, our working groups and centres and in the daily life of the department.

Our students are further supported by a range of courses, workshops, and professional development opportunities sponsored by the School of Social and Political Science and the Institute for Academic Development:

  • Institute for Academic Development

The degree is based on three to four years of full-time research. Each student follows an individual training programme designed with their supervisor and the Postgraduate Adviser. This programme is reviewed and updated on an annual basis.

In the first year, students acquire a wide range of research skills and formulate their research question and related design, under the guidance of their supervisors. At the end of their course of study students submit a thesis and are examined in an oral examination (viva voce) by two examiners (usually one internal to the University, the other external).

The thesis is a long piece of research on a topic of particular interest to the student and makes an original contribution to the field of politics and international relations.

Research training

All new research students follow a programme of research training, drawn from the MSc by Research courses coordinated by the School of Social and Political Science and Politics and International Relations-specific training.

The programme equips students with professional training to a high standard. After graduating you can expect to be a strong candidate for careers in a wide variety of contexts, including academia, the media, the private sector and a diverse array of public services. Nearly everyone needs good researchers!

Politics and International Relations helps you gain a range of transferable skills above and beyond those required by their specific projects, such as:

  • organising seminars and conferences
  • learning how to apply for research jobs in and out of academia
  • learning how to deliver professional seminar presentations

Postgraduate researchers also have access to the University and College-wide programme of training in transferable skills and other aspects of professional development, such as specialist careers advice.

PhD students in Politics and International Relations are allocated a supervisor and a co-supervisor, who will advise on the entirety of the research process, from reading and assembling ideas, to fieldwork, analysing empirical or theoretical materials, writing up chapters, completing the thesis, to the viva which rounds off the process.

Although the first supervisor is based in Politics and International Relations, the second one may be from another discipline in the School or the wider University. This decision depends wholly on your topic and the availability of supervisors.

There is a regular progress review, discuss ideas, review progress and provide help and support where necessary. The Postgraduate Advisor in Politics and International Relations is also available to provide advice. The supervisors and the Postgraduate Advisor facilitate a supportive framework and promote an active and sustaining research culture for our PhD students.

You are encouraged to contact staff with similar interests to yours and discuss ideas prior to application.

Accomplishments

Politics and International Relations postgraduate researchers significantly contribute to the academic community, productivity and acclaim of Edinburgh. Our PhD students are involved in a range of initiatives within the University and beyond, including government and non-profit programmes.

Cultural Studies - PhD

Choose to undertake a PhD in Cultural Studies and you’ll research visual, design and urban cultures. Based in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) within Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), you’ll have access to exciting opportunities for cross-disciplinary exploration and research.

Our PhD in Cultural Studies is offered as a three-year full-time (or six-year part-time) degree. It is an independently directed and intensive piece of research based on a substantial written dissertation.

Topics for PhD study are normally proposed by applicants but can also be negotiated with individual members of staff. Support and supervision may be provided by any of the teaching staff in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) and beyond.

Working closely with your supervisor(s), you'll pursue independent research leading to a thesis. This will be an original, significant, and creative contribution to knowledge in visual and cultural studies.

Research environment

ESALA is a world-leading centre for the study of architecture, the city and visual culture.

Located within Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh, the School boasts a wide variety of specialisms in cultural theory and history, design and urban cultures, visuality and visual knowledges, place memory and spatial practices, and architectural theory and criticism.

Research is central to life within ESALA. It motivates both the intellectual and creative facets of our activities, as well as driving our collaborations with a broad range of external institutions, both within the UK and internationally. Postgraduate research in particular is vital in maintaining our critical dynamism and international profile.

We actively promote interdisciplinary approaches to the understanding of visual culture and the city and encourage research projects that challenge conventional modes of practice and thought. In addition to supporting students’ individual research, academic staff encourage and facilitate collective project-based activities, including publications, symposia and exhibitions.

Why you should choose this programme

Research supervision is available in a broad range of topics drawing on expertise from across the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and beyond.

We provide a unique research context for studying visual culture and the politics of representation, encouraging collaborative approaches and interdisciplinary research methodologies.

We encourage experimentation in working with a range of critical modalities, forms of representation and writing practices.

Our week-long Cultural Research Summer School in Berlin facilitates exchanges of research methodologies, modes of documentation, writing and presentation.

Students are encouraged to actively contribute to research culture and cultural criticism and seek ways of transforming their academic work into publications.

A Guide to Online Degrees

Distance learning is an age-old practice. With the advent of technology, it’s become increasingly popular to earn your undergraduate or graduate degree online.

A woman studying an online degree

You can now earn most types of degrees online, including from top-rated universities. Earning an online degree remains a popular choice. Twenty percent of undergraduates at both public and private non-profit institutions learned online exclusively in 2021, according to the National Center for Education Statistics [ 1 ]. Of the graduate students enrolled in master’s programs during the 2015-2016 school year, 31 percent learned exclusively online [ 2 ].

In this article, we’ll go over what types of degrees you can earn online, the benefits of earning a degree virtually, and how you can find the best online degree program for you.

What is an online degree?

An online degree is any type of undergraduate or graduate degree (associate, bachelor's, master's, doctorate, or professional) that you earn online. Rather than relocate to attend an in-person program, you'll work through your coursework online, either by attending virtual classes or completing asynchronous classes on your own time.

Online degrees can either come from prestigious colleges or universities that offer specific online programs—usually in college majors conducive to being learned virtually—or entirely online colleges that do not offer an in-person experience.

Types of degrees you can earn online

You can earn every level of degree online: associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate , and professional . But for the purposes of this article, we'll focus on the three most common online degrees below.

Earn your associate degree online in a number of subjects that are more typically geared toward helping you move into a specific career path , such as computer science or business administration . You can expect to complete a minimum of 60 credits, with a portion of those (usually a minimum of 12 credits) going toward your focus or major.

Degrees: Associate of Arts (AA) , Associate of Science (AS) , Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

Popular majors: Liberal arts and sciences, general studies, humanities, health professions, business, homeland security, law enforcement, computer and information sciences [ 3 ]

Average time: Two years when you attend full-time

Requirements: High school diploma or GED

When you earn either your AA or AS, you can transfer into a four-year bachelor’s program. The AAS, on the other hand, tends to provide more practical training so you can use your degree to begin a career as a paralegal, welder, or dental assistant.

Earn your bachelor’s degree online , choosing from a number of majors that either prepare you for many career options or for a particular career or industry. You can expect to complete a minimum of 120 credits, which include both general education, major, and elective courses.

Degrees: Bachelor of Arts (BA) , Bachelor of Science (BS) , Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) , Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)

Popular majors: Business, health professions, social sciences and history, psychology, biomedical sciences, engineering [ 4 ]

Average time: Four or five years when you attend full-time

Earn your master’s degree online to either deepen the subject knowledge of your bachelor’s degree or move in a new direction. Whether you’re interested in pursuing a  theoretical or practical subject, there are an array of programs available. The number of credits you’ll need to earn will depend on your program—requirements can range between 30 and 72.

Degree types: Master of Arts (MA) , Master of Science (MS) , Master of Business Administration (MBA) , Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Master of Civil Engineering (MCE), Master of Social Work (MSW)

Popular programs: Business, education, health professions, engineering, public administration/social services [ 4 ]

Average time: 18 months to two years when you attend full-time

Online degree costs

The cost of attending college in person tends to encompass additional factors beyond tuition and fees. In 2021, the annual total cost of attendance in the US was $15,748 for a two-year public college, $25,487 for a four-year public college or university, and $53,217 for a private non-profit institution [ 5 ]. For a master’s degree, the average total cost was $66,340 [ 6 ].

Online degree programs tend to be less expensive because they don’t have the same overhead as many in-person programs. The average total tuition for an online bachelor's degree can span between $38,496 and $60,593, according to US News [ 7 ].

Looking for an affordable, efficient option to advance your education? You can earn a Master of Science in Management from the University of Illinois in as little as one year for $11,052 USD.

5 benefits of earning your degree online

Many colleges and universities offer the same quality of education online as they do in person, including having the same faculty members teach courses. But when you learn online, you may find that there are added benefits involved:

1. Greater flexibility

Because of the way online degree programs are designed and offered, they tend to provide more flexible scheduling. Many courses take place asynchronously so you can learn around your other responsibilities, rather than fitting those obligations around your degree.

2. Work full-time or part-time

Many online college students continue working either part-time or full-time while earning their degree, thanks in part to the flexible scheduling we mentioned above. In fact, the average online college student is 32 years old, making an online degree program a strong option for professionals interested in going back to school [ 8 ].

3. Typically more affordable

Depending on what you study and where, some online degrees may cost less than in-person degrees. Online colleges don’t have the same overhead as brick-and-mortar schools, meaning they can charge less. More than that, you likely won’t have additional expenses, like transportation and on-campus housing, to factor into your budget.

4. Develop unique skills

With online learning, you get the chance to practice and refine self-discipline and time management. Both of those skills are important given the flexible, often self-paced nature of online learning, and both are valuable workplace skills that are particularly important as more of the global workforce becomes remote.

5. Network with your peers

Many students opt to learn in-person because they want the full college experience or the opportunity to socialize and network. But many online degree programs offer opportunities to interact with other students. Those exchanges may start off via discussion forums or emails at first, but there’s an array of virtual resources to foster long-distance connections if you’re willing to make the time.

How to find the best online degree program for you

Enrolling in an online degree program has many advantages, as we discussed above, but it’s important that you find the right online program for you. Because of the self-discipline and time management that learning online requires, when you learn is up to you. That makes it especially important to make sure you’re set up for success.

Below, we’ve outlined a few components that you should keep in mind as you research different online degree programs and go about determining the ones you’d like to apply to.

Look for accreditation.

Finding an online degree from an accredited college or university is one way to ensure that you’re receiving a quality education that has been vetted by an approved outside agency. But the type of accreditation can become especially important if you want to transfer previously earned credits to a new institution—or apply for federal financial aid. Note how each program is accredited, regionally or nationally, and speak with an advisor if you have additional questions.

Consider the course format.

The way your online program is structured will depend on the college or university you attend. Some programs are fully online, meaning you will not be expected to attend any classes on campus. However, others employ a hybrid model, meaning you will be expected to take some classes in person. Learn how each program is structured and think about the best approach for your learning style and schedule.

Determine how much flexibility you need.

Speaking of how you’ll learn, online programs tend to structure courses asynchronously (in which you learn on your own time) or synchronously (in which you attend a scheduled class virtually). Depending on your schedule and your needs, figure out which option best suits you, and narrow your program choices down based on how they offer courses.

Pay attention to what you can learn.

Not every major or program is available online at every degree level. Once you know what you want to study, and the kind of degree you want to earn, begin researching which colleges and universities offer that track. Pay close attention to the coursework required to graduate, and make sure it aligns with what you hope to gain by earning your degree.

Research the cost.

Each online degree program charges a different amount for tuition and fees, including in some cases whether you’re in-state or out-of-state. As you identify different programs that interest you, make a note about tuition costs so you can make a decision that best suits your resources. You can submit a FAFSA form each year, which may help you qualify for grants, scholarships, and federal student loans.

Review faculty credentials.

As much as possible, you should find out about the faculty who will teach your courses, whether those are led asynchronously or synchronously. Online programs should provide those details, and knowing more about your faculty’s experience and credentials can help reassure you that you’re learning from subject experts.

Four Oxford University scientists awarded Royal Society of Chemistry prizes

Four scientists from the University of Oxford and a multidisciplinary collaboration have won prizes from the Royal Society of Chemistry in recognition of brilliance in research and innovation. The awards are among the oldest and most prestigious research prizes in the world, having recognised excellence in the chemical sciences for more than 150 years.

Professor Stephen Faulkner , Head of the Department of Chemistry, said: ‘We are thrilled that the research of our academics has been recognised today with these prestigious awards from the Royal Society of Chemistry. Congratulations to all four winners, whose work spans the breadth of chemical research: from medicinal chemistry and molecular engineering, to green chemistry and materials development. As well as recognising our academics’ ground-breaking work, today’s awards stand as a testament to the inspiring work that so many people do in our Department’s laboratories throughout the year.’

About the Oxford winners:

Professor Harry Anderson , from Oxford University’s Department of Chemistry, has received the  Pedler Prize  which is awarded for outstanding contributions to the chemical sciences in the area of organic chemistry.

It is a great honour to be awarded the Pedler Prize, because former recipients include chemists who I greatly admire, such as my PhD mentor, Jeremy Sanders, and Sir Jack Baldwin, who appointed me to my first permanent position. It recognises the creativity and hard work of members of my research group. Professor Harry Anderson, Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford

Professor Anderson’s research is directed towards creating molecular compounds with unprecedented properties, and changing their molecular architectures to achieve desired characteristics. A particular interest is in large organic molecules that allow the flow of electrons over distances of several nanometres.

His group has developed methods for creating molecular wire rings, and recently demonstrated that large porphyrin nanorings exhibit global aromatic ring currents. He also works on the synthesis of new forms of carbon, and has developed strategies to stabilize structures that are normally too reactive to study under ambient conditions.

Robert Hoye , Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the Beilby Medal and Prize . This recognises work of exceptional practical significance in chemical engineering, applied materials science, energy efficiency or a related field.

I am humbled to receive this award, particularly the recognition of the interdisciplinary nature of my work. I am grateful to the support from the RSC, The Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining, and The Society of Chemical Industry for this award, as well as to my group members (past and present) and mentors, who should share in this recognition. Associate Professor Robert Hoye, Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford.

Professor Hoye’s research sits at the interface of chemistry, materials science, and engineering, and focuses on developing new light-sensitive materials for renewable energy applications and healthcare imaging technologies. A key achievement was his discovery and development of a new type of semiconductor that can tolerate imperfections, enabling efficient performances using low-temperature, cost-effective production methods.

Applications include novel energy devices, such as photovoltaics that harvest ambient light to power Internet of Things electronics, besides photoelectrochemical cells for clean fuels. In 2024, he created the start-up company NanoPrint Innovations Ltd to commercialise a reactor his team developed for depositing next-generation thin film semiconductors for these devices. Professor Hoye has also developed devices that can detect X-rays with ultra-low doses, which can make medical imaging safer and more effective.

Dermot O’Hare is Professor of Organometallic and Materials Chemistry at Oxford University’s Department of Chemistry. He receives the John B Goodenough Prize , which is awarded for outstanding contributions to the chemical sciences in any area of materials chemistry.

It is a particular honour to be this year’s recipient of the Royal Society of Chemistry, John B Goodenough Prize. John was the Statutory Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Oxford when I was an undergraduate. Back then, it never crossed my mind that I was receiving lectures from a future Nobel Laureate. I would like to thank SCG Chemicals for their 13+ years of continual support of our research activities and for their help in creating and maintaining their commitment to Oxford University through the SCG Oxford Centre of Excellence. Professor Dermot O’Hare, Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford

Professor Dermot O’Hare leads a large, multi-disciplinary research team working towards finding solutions to global issues relating to energy, zero carbon and the circular economy. His group has five strategic research themes: circular economy, carbon dioxide management, green hydrogen, low carbon feedstocks, and materials for environmental sustainability.

In 2012, Professor O’Hare was instrumental in creating the SCG Chemicals Co-Oxford Centre of Excellence for Chemistry (CoE) where he is Director. This acts as a hub for academic/industry collaboration to drive innovation to SCG and impact for Oxford research. Ground-breaking discoveries from the centre include new catalysts for CO 2 conversion, alkane chemistry, nanomaterials as functional additives in polymer packaging, and energy devices.

Angela Russell , Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in Oxford’s Departments of Chemistry and Pharmacology, has been awarded the Chemistry Biology Interface mid-career prize: Jeremy Knowles Award. This recognises outstanding contributions made by a mid-career scientist working at the chemistry and life science interface.

I am delighted to receive this recognition of our work over the last 20 years towards an effective treatment for the devastating neuromuscular disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Throughout this endeavour has been, and continues to be, a team effort. This prize also recognises all of the contributions over the years, for which I am incredibly grateful, from my co-workers, collaborative partners, our funders, charities, and importantly patients and their families. Professor Angela Russell,  Departments of Chemistry and Pharmacology, University of Oxford

Professor Russell’s research seeks to develop an effective drug to treat children with the fatal muscle-wasting disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) through increasing the levels of utrophin, a muscle protein. Utrophin is related to dystrophin (the protein that is absent in DMD), and has the potential to act as a substitute for dystrophin and restore muscle function in patients. Laboratory research led by Professor Russell’s group revealed that utrophin production can be increased in the body using molecules that bind to a protein called the arylhydrocarbon receptor. The group are now working to develop candidate molecules that bind to this receptor and which could provide long-term benefits for all patients with DMD.

The ReLiB Project has been named winner of  the 2024 Royal Society of Chemistry’s Horizon Prize , which celebrates discoveries and innovations that push the boundaries of science.

The ReLiB Project is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the universities of Edinburgh, Leicester, Newcastle, Oxford and Imperial College, and led by the University of Birmingham. The prize recognises ReLiB’s transformative research towards establishing a technology pipeline for low cost, high-throughput, and low environmental impact lithium-ion battery recycling.

A group of men and women of various ages and racial backgrounds, standing on a staircase.

Dr Helen Pain, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry, said: ‘Our prize winners come from a vast array of backgrounds, all contributing in different ways to our knowledge-base and bringing fresh ideas and innovations. We recognise chemical scientists from every career stage and every role type, including those who contribute to the RSC’s work as volunteers. We celebrate winners from both industry and academia, as well as individuals, teams, and the science itself. Their passion, dedication and brilliance are an inspiration. I extend my warmest congratulations to them all.’

CGEM welcomes the 2023 cohort of PhD students

Four new PhD students have begun their studies this year with CGEM based researchers as supervisors or co-supervisors.

Nika Balkic and Jamey Brewster have joined Cathy Abbott’s research group, whilst Josie Robertson and Vitan Cherepnalkoski have joined the Marioni and Brown Research Groups respectively.

Meet the new PhD Students

Nika Balkic

Nika Balkic

“I recently completed my undergraduate degree in Molecular Genetics at the University of Edinburgh and am excited about continuing my academic journey at this institution. My primary supervisor during my PhD will be Professor Catherine Abbott and my secondary supervisor will be Dr Alfredo Gonzales-Sulser.

My research project focuses on optimizing pre-clinical models for childhood-onset epilepsy by addressing the challenges related to low frequencies or absence of spontaneous seizures associated with specific genes.

This involves utilizing well-characterized mouse models and employing a variety of methodological approaches. I'm eager to make a meaningful contribution to this field, ultimately benefiting individuals affected by childhood-onset epilepsies.”

Jamey Brewster

Jamey Brewster

“Hi! I’m Jamey, I’ve just started my PhD working in the Abbott and Donlin-Asp labs.

The Abbott lab studies how mutations in a protein involved in translation, eEF1A2, cause epilepsy and intellectual disability, whilst the Donlin-Asp lab works to establish what controls the transport of protein-coding RNA in cells.

My project will focus on how expression of eEF1A2’s ‘sister’ protein, eEF1A1, is regulated during brain development, and whether we could target eEF1A1 RNA in neurons to replace dysfunctional eEF1A2.”

Josie Robertson

Josie Robertson

"I am an ECAT Clinical Lecturer, incorporating a PhD into my Anaesthetics training to develop a career as a clinical academic. My project is titled “Integration of the physical environment and blood-based multi-omics to explore life-course risk factors for brain health” and focuses on epigenetics and proteomics as a route to understanding the impact of air pollution on brain health in later life.

I am supervised by Riccardo Marioni in the IGC and jointly by Simon Cox (Psychology), Tom Russ (Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences) and Jamie Pearce (Geosciences).”

Vitan Cherepnalkoski

Vitan Cherepnalkoski

“I’m working with Professors Wilson Poon and Sara Brown.

I am originally from Macedonia where I attended an international high school and followed the US advanced placement program - AP.

With it, I was able to do a direct entry into my university degree and within 4 years graduated with a Master’s in experimental physics.

I knew I wanted to pursue a career in biophysics and decided the best route forward would be to apply for a PhD. I thus joined Professor Wilson’s project in collaboration with Unilever on skin biophysics.

My work will examine how different cleansing agents affect the surface properties of skin and how this in turn affects bacterial adhesion to the skin.”

I am delighted to welcome the four new PhD students to CGEM, where they will make up a vital part of the academic community Professor Tim Aitman Director of the Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine (CGEM)
