Types of Earthquake

Collapse Earthquake and 

Explosive Earthquake.

Tectonic Earthquake 

It is caused due to the movement of the slab of rocks of uneven shapes that lie underneath the earth’s crust. Apart from that, energy is stored in the earth’s crust. Tectonic plates are pushed away from each other or towards each other due to the energy. A pressure is formed because of the energy and movement as time passes. A fault line is formed due to severe pressure. The center point of this dispersion is the epicenter of the earthquake. Subsequently, traveling of the waves of energy from focus to the surface causes the tremor.

Volcanic Earthquake

The earthquake caused by volcanic activity is called a volcanic earthquake. These kinds of earthquakes are of weaker magnitudes. Volcanic earthquakes are categorized into two types. In the first type, which is called volcano-tectonic, shaking happens due to input or withdrawal of Magma. In the second type, which is termed as Long-period earthquake, tremors occur due to changing of pressure among the earth’s layers.

Collapse Earthquake

Collapse Earthquake is the third type of earthquake that occurs in the caverns and mines. This is another example of a weak magnitude earthquake. Mines collapsed due to underground blasts. Consequently, seismic waves are formed due to this collapsing. Earthquakes occur because of these seismic waves.

Explosive Earthquake

The fourth type of earthquake is called an explosive earthquake. This is caused due to the testing of nuclear weapons.

Effects of Earthquake

The effects of earthquakes are very severe and deadly. 

It can cause irreparable damage to property and loss of human lives. The lethality of an earthquake depends on its distance from the epicentre. 

Damage to establishments is the direct impact of an earthquake. In the hilly areas, several landslides are caused due to earthquakes.  

Another major impact of an earthquake is soil liquefaction. Losing the strength of water-saturated granular material is the cause behind this. The rigidity of soil is totally lost due to this.

Since the earthquake affects the electric power and gas lines, it can cause a fire to break out. 

Deadly Tsunamis are caused due to earthquakes. Gigantic sea waves are caused by the sudden or abnormal movement of huge volumes of water. This is called an earthquake in the ocean. When tsunamis hit the sea coasts, they cause a massive loss of lives and properties. 

Earthquake is termed as one of the most huge and lethal natural disasters in the world. It proves the fact that human beings are just nothing in front of nature. The sudden occurrence of earthquakes shocks everyone. Scientists are working rigorously to prevent the damage of earthquakes, but nothing fruitful has been achieved yet.

Examples of Devastating Earthquake

The city of Kobe in Japan witnessed a devastating earthquake on January  17, 1995, killing more than 6,000 and making more than 45,000 people homeless.  The magnitude of the quake was 6.9 at the moment which caused damage of around 100 million dollars.  The governor of Kobe spent years on reconstruction and made efforts to bring back fifty thousand people who had left home.  Japan geologically is a highly active country. It lies upon four major tectonic plates namely, Eurasian, Philippine, Pacific, and North American which frequently meet and interact.

The second incident is in Nepal where an earthquake struck on April 25, 2015. About 9000 people were killed and almost 600,000 structures were destroyed.  The magnitude of the quake was 7.9 and the repels were felt by neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, China and India.  The disaster caused severe damage of millions of dollars. All the countries across the world including India garnered to help Nepal by sending monetary aid, medical supplies, transport helicopters and others.

Earthquakes are a natural disaster that come with a lot of dangers. The shaking and movement of the earth can cause buildings to fall down, trapping people inside. The shaking caused by such a sudden change is usually very minor, but large earthquakes sometimes cause very large shaking of the land. The shaking waves spread from the spot at which rock begins breaking for the first time; this spot is called the center, or hypocenter, of an earthquake.

If you're inside when an earthquake starts, drop to the ground and cover your head. The earthquake's magnitude is related to the amount of earthquake energy released in a seismic event.

Different Types of Earthquakes

There are three types of earthquakes:

Shallow | A shallow earthquake is when the earthquake's focus is close to the surface of the Earth. These earthquakes are usually less powerful than the other two types, but can still cause a lot of damage.

Intermediate | Intermediate earthquakes have a focus that's located between the surface and the Earth's mantle, and are usually more powerful than shallow earthquakes.

Deep | Deep earthquakes have a focus that's located in the mantle, which is the layer of the Earth below the crust. They're the most powerful type of earthquake, and can even cause damage on the surface.

An earthquake can cause damage to buildings and bridges; interrupt gas, electrical, and telephone services; and occasionally trigger landslides, avalanches, flash flooding, wildfires, and massive, destructive waves of water over oceans (tsunamis).

The Dangers Associated With Earthquakes

The shaking of the ground can cause objects to fall off shelves and injure people. If you're outside when an earthquake starts, move away from tall buildings, streetlights and power lines.

An earthquake can also cause a tsunami, or a large wave, to form and crash onto the shore. Tsunamis can be very dangerous and can reach heights of over 100 feet.

How to Prepare for an Earthquake

When an earthquake is imminent, your first step should be to find a safe spot. The most ideal spots are under sturdy furniture or inside door frames. It is best to stay away from windows and anything that can fall over.

Once you've found the safest place, it's time to prepare for the shaking. Grab some blankets, pillows and helmets if possible – all of which can provide extra cushioning against falling objects.

Additionally, you should always keep an eye out for debris that could cause injuries, such as broken glass and sharp objects.

Finally, stay calm until the shaking stops, and monitor local news reports for additional information on how best to handle the situation.

What to do During an Earthquake

The moment an earthquake hits, it is important to stay as calm and collected as possible. Safety is the first priority so you must stay away from windows and furniture that can fall on you, and protect your head with your arms if needed.

If an earthquake occurs while you are indoors, stay away from anything that could fall or break such as windows, mirrors, or furniture. Do not run outdoors as shaking can cause glass and other materials to fall from the building structure. Instead, seek shelter under sturdy tables or desks. If there is no furniture available, move to a corner of the room and crouch down protectively with your arms over your head and neck.

It's also important to take note of any gas lines that could be affected during an earthquake and shut them off if necessary in order to prevent fires from breaking out due to exposed pipes.

After the Earthquake: Recovery and Assistance

When the shaking stops, there will be a period of recovery.

Don't enter any building if it has visible damage due to the earthquake - it's better to be safe than sorry.

You should contact local aid organisations like the Red Cross for additional help with sheltering, water, food and other essentials.

Stay in touch with local officials about any services provided for those affected by the earthquake.

Make sure you also have a plan for what to do if you're stuck in an earthquake, and know how to get in touch with loved ones in case of an emergency.

An earthquake is a sudden shaking (or trembling) of the earth which lasts for a very short time.

An earthquake is caused by the violent movements of rocks deep inside the earth’s crust.

Earthquakes can cause immense damage to houses, other buildings, bridges, dams and people, etc. A lot of people get killed when they get buried under the debris of collapsed houses and other buildings during an earthquake. Earthquakes can also cause floods, landslides, and tsunamis

A major earthquake occurred in India on 26th January 2001 in Bhuj district of  Gujarat.

Another major earthquake occurred on 8th October 2005 in Uri and Tangdhar towns of North Kashmir.

A great loss of human life and property occurred in both these earthquakes.

A major tsunami (caused by an earthquake) occurred in the Indian Ocean on 26th December 2004. All the coastal areas around the Indian Ocean suffered huge loss of life and property during this tsunami.

The other destructive natural phenomena such as cyclones and lightning can be predicted in advance to some extent so that we get some time to take measures to protect ourselves and minimise the damage to life and property. This is not so in the case of earthquakes.

Earthquake is a destructive natural phenomenon which cannot be predicted in advance. Nobody can tell when and where an earthquake will occur. This unpredictable nature of

earthquakes makes them even more dangerous. In order to understand why earthquakes occur, we should first understand the inner structure of the earth.

Inside Earth

The inside of earth is made up of three main layers : Core, Mantle and Crust.

The innermost part of the earth is called its core. The core of earth is made up mostly of iron. The core of earth is extremely hot. Most of the earth’s core (called outer core) is liquid (molten iron) whereas the inner part of core (called inner core) is under such high pressure that it is solid.

The central region of earth (between the core and crust) is called mantle. Mantle is the middle layer of the earth. Mantle is mostly made of dense, solid rocks. Some of the mantle is a mixture of solid rocks and hot molten rocks (liquid rocks) like the lava from a volcano. Heat coming from the core of earth warms the mantle. This heating sets up huge convection currents in the mantle. The giant convection currents occurring in the mantle can make the mantle move very, very slowly.

The outermost layer of earth is called crust . The crust of earth is made of comparatively lighter rocks than that of mantle. The crust of earth is thicker where there is land (or continents). The crust of earth under the oceans is thinner. The crust of earth is made of many huge pieces of flat rocks. Each piece of the earth’s crust is called a plate. The plates of earth on which continents exist are called continental plates whereas those plates of earth on which oceans exist are called oceanic plates. The solid plates which make up the earth’s crust are floating on the partially molten rocks of mantle beneath. Due to convection currents taking place in the mantle, the plates of earth’s crust are moving around very, very slowly. The reason the earthquakes occur is that the earth’s crust is made of a number of plates which are able to move. Earthquakes occur mostly at the edges of moving plates of the crust (or boundaries of the moving plates of the earth).

Occurrence of Earthquake

The earthquakes occur when the moving plates of the earth’s crust :

(1) slide past one another, and (2) collide with one another.

(1) The plates of earth’s crust are made up of huge rocks having rough edges. Due to their highly rough edges, the movement of two crust plates relative to one another is not smooth. When the two huge plates of earth’s crust slide past one another, they rub against one another ferociously and the rocks on their edges get entangled. Due to entanglement of the rocks at their edges, the two crust plates stop moving for some time. During this time, the plates are still pushing against one another and trying to move but they are not moving.

This builds up pressure between the two plates of crust. When sufficient pressure has been built up between the two crust plates, the entangled rocks of the two crust plates break open suddenly with a big jolt. 

When the entangles rocks of the two crust plates break open suddenly with a big jolt, the earthquake occurs releasing a tremendous amount of energy.

This sudden release of tremendous amount of energy produces shock waves (or seismic waves) which make the earth shake. After the earthquake, the plates of earth’s crust start moving again and continue to move until they get entangled again.

(2) When the two plates of the earth’s crust moving in opposite directions collide with each other head on, then the ends of these crust plates buckle and fold forming new mountains and causing earthquakes. A  tremendous amount of energy is released when the two huge plates of the earth’s crust collide with each other. This tremendous amount of energy sends shock waves (called seismic waves) throughout the earth. When these shock waves reach the surface of earth, the ground starts shaking violently. This shaking of the ground is felt as an earthquake.

Seismic zones or Fault zone

The weak zones of earth’s crust (which are more prone to earthquakes) are called seismic zones’ or fault zones.

Major earthquakes occur in the well defined ‘seismic zones’ called earthquake belts. The seismic zones mark the edges of the huge mobile pieces of the earth’s crust called plates. . In India, the areas most threatened by earthquakes are Kashmir, Western and Central Himalayas, the whole of North-East, Rann of Kutch, Rajasthan and Indo-Gangetic Plane. Some areas of South India also fall in earthquake danger zone.

Seismograph

Earthquake tremors produce shock waves (called seismic waves). The shock waves travel in all directions through the Earth and also reach the surface of the earth.

Seismograph is an instrument which measures and records the magnitude of an earthquake in terms of the shock waves it produces.

Seismograph detects the shock waves produced by an earthquake and also records the shock waves on the paper in the form of a graph. Seismograph is also known as seismometer .

A seismograph consists of a heavy weight suspended from a support with the help of a strong wire. The support is attached to the base of seismograph. And the base of seismograph is fixed rigidly to a solid rock on the surface of earth. A pen is attached to the lower end of the hanging heavy weight. This pen can trace lines on a graph paper wound around a rotating drum which lies beneath it.

The purpose of using a freely suspended heavy weight is that, being heavy, it has a lot of inertia and hence it remains stationary during an earthquake when the rest of seismograph (including its support) fixed to the earth shakes (or vibrates) during an earthquake.

Working of Seismograph

When an earthquake occurs, the earth starts shaking due to which the base of seismograph fixed to the earth also starts shaking. But the freely suspended heavy weight (and the pen attached to it) do not shake during the earthquake, they remain stationary. Since the graph paper on the rotating drum shakes with the shaking earth, the pen attached to suspended weight records the vibrations produced by earthquake on the graph paper which moves under it. The pen traces the relative movement between the shaking earth and the stationary, suspended heavy weight. This trace on the graph paper records the earthquake. The seismograph record is also known as seismogram .

A seismograph record (or seismogram) shows seismic waves or earthquake waves recorded on a graph paper by a seismograph. It also shows the duration (or time) for which the earthquake lasts, in seconds.

By studying the seismograph records of an earthquake produced at various seismic stations, scientists can construct a complete map of an earthquake giving its focus, epicentre, magnitude and duration.

The place inside the earth’s crust where the earthquake is generated, is called focus of the earthquake. The focus of an earthquake is deep underground.

The seismic waves spread from the focus and travel through the earth in all directions.

Focus is actually source of an earthquake. The point on earth’s surface directly above the focus is called epicentre.

Richter Scale

The magnitude (or intensity) of an earthquake is expressed on the Richter Scale . The Richter Scale is a series of numbers from 1 to 12 used to express the magnitude (or size) of an earthquake.

An earthquake of magnitude 2 is ten times as strong as an earthquake of magnitude 1.

An earthquake of magnitude 3 on Richter Scale is 100 times as strong as an earthquake of magnitude 1 on the same scale. And an earthquake of magnitude 6 on the Richter Scale is 1000 times stronger than an earthquake of magnitude 4. An earthquake of magnitude 6 on Richter Scale has 1000 times more destructive energy than an earthquake of magnitude 4.

An earthquake of magnitude 1.5 on the Richter Scale is the smallest earthquake that can be felt by us. An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 on the Richter Scale causes some damage but not much damage. The earthquakes having magnitudes higher than 7 on the Richter Scale are really destructive earthquakes.

Both, Bhuj and Kashmir earthquakes had magnitudes greater than 7.5 on the Richter Scale. The earthquakes which measure 8.5 or more on Richter Scale are devastating. During these earthquakes, the affected part of earth’s surface shakes violently. Such earthquakes can destroy entire cities and villages causing a great loss of life and property.

Protection Against Earthquakes

Earthquakes are highly destructive and they cannot be predicted. So, it is necessary that we take precautions to protect ourselves all the time.

Some of the important precautions which can be taken by the people living in seismic zones for protection against earthquakes are as follows:

(i) All the houses and other buildings in seismic zones should be designed and constructed in such a way that they can withstand major earthquake tremors.

(ii) In highly seismic areas, the use of mud and timber (wood) for building houses is better than using heavy construction materials. The roofs of houses in such areas should be kept as light as possible so that a roof falls during an earthquake, the damage will not be too much.

(iii) The cupboards and shelves should be fixed to the walls so that they do not fall easily when shaking occurs during an earthquake. Glass bottles should not be placed on high shelves and heavy objects should be placed low to the ground.

(iv) The objects such as heavy mirrors, photo frames, wall clocks and water-heaters, etc, should be mounted securely on the walls at such places in the house that they do not fall on the people in the house in the event of an earthquake.

(v) All buildings (especially tall buildings) should have fire-fighting equipment in working order.

In case an earthquake occurs, we should take the following precautions to protect ourselves depending on whether we are at home or outdoors at that moment.

If we are at home when an earthquake occurs, then:

(1) We should take shelter under a sturdy table or a kitchen counter and stay there till the shaking due to earthquake stops. We should cover our head with hands.

(2) We should stay away from tall and heavy objects (like steel almirahs, cabinets, book racks and refrigerators), so that if they topple , they may not fall on us.

(3) We should also stay away from glass windows that may shelter due to vibrations.

(4) If we are in bed, we should just move on the bed to be close to a wall but not get up from the bed. We should protect our head with a pillow.

If we are outdoors when an earthquake occurs, then:

(1) We should stay at a clear spot away from buildings, trees and over-head power lines. We should also sit on the ground.

(2) If we are in a car (or bus), we should not come out of it. The car (or bus) should be driven slowly to a clear spot away from buildings, trees and over-head electric wires.

Earthquake is the shaking of the earth, which releases an immense amount of energy that creates seismic waves. These waves can be ranged from weak to strong. Some seismic waves are too weak to sense and too strong to destroy cities and create violence. The seismic activity refers to the rate and frequency of earthquakes experienced over the years.

Manifestations of the earthquakes are the shaking and the displacement of the ground. A tsunami is caused when the epicenter of a massive earthquake is displaced by strong waves. Because of the earthquake, the phenomenon of landslides and volcanic activity takes place. This can also be defined as the seismic wave that is caused by naturally or by humans.  The occurrence is mostly due to the cause of geographical faults. The other reasons include landslides, volcanic activities, nuclear tests, etc.

Types of Earthquake

  • Tectonic Earthquakes –  Tectonic plates are the loose, cracked fragments present in the crust of the earth. These plates move slowly and gradually under the surface. The movement of the plates is in different forms. They can move towards each other, away from each other, in the sliding directions, or in a colliding way. A huge tremor occurs when these plates slide over one another. They are the reason for massive mass destruction.
  • Volcanic Earthquakes –  Volcanic Earthquakes mostly occur after or before the phenomenon of the eruption. The magma eruption from the earth leaves a space behind. To fill the space, the rocks displaces towards the space that results in the severe earthquakes. The cases of massive explosions occur when magma blocks the vent during the volcanic activity.
  • Explosion Earthquakes –  The main reason for these kinds of explosions is nuclear testing. Men mostly trigger these earthquakes. In the year 1930, numerous small towns and villages were devasted because of the testing of nuclear weapons by the United States.
  • Collapse Earthquakes –  They occur near underground mines and are generally smaller. In addition, these are called as mines burst. Pressures that are generated within the rocks instigate these earthquakes. These earthquakes mostly prevailed in the small towns where the underground mines are located.

Effects of Earthquake

  • Ground Shaking is considered the most familiar experience one finds during the earthquakes. It is the series of seismic waves that hit the ground from a small to large scales. The consequences noted are the damages to the buildings, troubles in standing stable, and destruction of natural habitats in the cases of vigorous shaking.
  • When the wave’s movement is actually along with the fault, this leads to the total distortion of the ground. The cases for actively ground ruptures are quite rare. The surface of the earth is left with deep cracks.
  • When there occurs a sustainable shaking and direct rupturing of less stable slopes, it gives rise to the phenomenon of landslides.
  • Tsunamis, popularly and often called tidal waves, are termed as the most hazardous event. The main cause of this is the movement of the seafloor vertically, causing a series of water waves. An earthquake is a sudden shaking movement of the surface of the earth . It is known as a quake, tremblor or tremor. Earthquakes can range in size from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people around and destroy whole cities. The seismicity or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency , type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.

So far, there have been sixty-two earthquakes in India. The first recorded earthquake in India was on 6th June 1505 it occurred in Saldang, Karnali zone. And the most recent one happened in India as on 31st January 2018 and occurred in Kashmir, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.

An earthquake is measured on Richter’s scale. A seismometer detects the vibrations caused by an earthquake. It plots these vibrations on a seismograph. The strength, or magnitude, of an earthquake, is measured  using the Richter scale. Quakes measuring around 7 or 8 on the Richter scale can be devastating.

Causes of Earthquake

Earthquakes are caused by sudden tectonic movements in the Earth’s crust. The main cause is that when tectonic plates, one rides over the other, causing orogeny collide (mountain building), earthquakes. The largest fault surfaces on Earth are formed due to boundaries between moving plates.

The stress increases when they stick, relative motion between the plates. This continues until the stress rises and breaks, suddenly allowing sliding over the locked portion of the fault, releasing the stored energy as shock waves. Such faults are San Andreas fault in San Francisco,  Rift valley  in Africa etc.

The effects of an earthquake are terrible and devastating. Many building, hospitals, schools, etc are destroyed due to it. A lot of people get killed and injured. Many people lose their money and property. It affects the mental health and emotional health of people.

The environmental effects of it are that including surface faulting,  tectonic uplift and subsidence, tsunamis, soil liquefaction, ground resonance , landslides and ground failure, either directly linked to a quake source or provoked by the ground shaking.

Bhuj Earthquake (26 January 2001): This was one of the most devastating natural calamities that ever hit our country. It killed around 20,000 people and injured as many as 167,000 people.

The Latur Earthquake (30 September 1993): The Latur earthquake hit the Indian state of Maharashtra. This 6.2 magnitude earthquake mainly affected the districts of Latur and Osmanabad. It demolished as many as 52 villages in Maharashtra and killed around 10,000 people. As many as 30,000 people were injured during the event.

Uttarkashi Earthquake (2 nd October 1991): The earthquake with a 6.8 magnitude hit Gharwal and Uttarkashi in Uttrakhand. Strong tremors were felt in these two regions and various other parts of Uttar Pradesh. It caused mass destruction. Numerous buildings were wrecked during the event. More than 700 people lost their lives and numerous others became homeless.

Almost every part of India has been hit by earthquake at some point or the other. While some areas in the country are highly prone to earthquakes others stand a low chance of being hit by them. Little was understood about them until the 20 th century, when Seismology was introduced as a study of earthquakes. In the following essay we will go through the causes, effects and facts about earthquakes.

Causes of Earthquakes

Earthquakes are caused by the movement or breaking of rocks underneath the surface of earth. Under earth’s surface layers of rocks stay connected to each other. The rocks or plates push each other continuously, but doesn’t move as the forces balance each other.

However, if the rocks break or layers move against each other, seismic waves are produced which reach the surface in form of tremors known as earthquake. Hence earthquake is felt as long as the rocks are rubbing against each other and ceases as soon as the rocks get stuck again. In seismic language, the point immediately below where the rocks break is called the focus and the point immediately above is called the epicenter.

Measurement

The severity of an earthquake is measured in Richter scale. A strong earthquake has a high value on Richter scale while a low earthquake has a lower value.

An earthquake which measures 6 to 7 on Richter scale is potentially damaging to life and property, while the effects of earthquake measuring 4 to 5 on Richter scale could result only in mild tremors or a little structural damage.

There are many effects of earthquake and may include the following; though, they are not limited to the effects mentioned here below-

1) Tremors or Shaking

Shaking of ground is the first effect of earthquake and is also the most damaging one. The severity of shaking; however, depends on the magnitude of earthquake and the distance of the place from the epicenter. An earthquake measuring around 6 or above on Richter scale has an ability to destroy even the most strongest of buildings, depending on their proximity to the epicenter.

2) Ground Rupture

Sometimes, an earthquake measuring high on Richter scale could cause visible rupture in the ground along the fault line. Sometimes, when the earthquake is potentially high on Richter scale, a ground rupture measuring several meters deep and several kilometers long, may result. Such ground ruptures are considerably harmful to significant structures like dams, nuclear power stations and bridges.

Earthquakes can cause forest fires, as tremors force the trees to rub each other, thereby generating heat and sparks. There have been forest fires recorded after earthquakes. Moreover, an earthquake can cause fire in urban areas also, by rupturing electrical lines and damaging electrical protection systems.

4) Landslides

Landslides are the most common aftereffects of earthquake in hilly areas. Shaking of earth displaces the soil on sloppy hills, resulting in a landslide. The landslides sometimes could be potentially more dangerous than the earthquake itself, as they contain debris like trees and rocks, and have a high potential to damage life and property.

Tsunami is the most severe and frightening aftereffect of earthquake. Tsunami is caused when the epicenter of an earthquake lies under the ocean surface. An earthquake in the sea bed results in waves those are not more than a ripple over the epicenter, but as they travel towards the shore, they get bigger, faster and stronger. A wave only measuring 1 meter above the epicenter could measure 100 meters at the shores, resulting in huge loss of life and tremendous damage to the property.

What to do in an Earthquake?

Though the science of studying earthquake has developed significantly, and today it’s possible to forecast an earthquake, even then it might not be possible in every place and situation. Below given are some of the safety precautions you could take when caught in a situation, to save yourself and family from harm.

Situation 1 – Outdoors

If you are outdoors and sense an earthquake, move away from buildings, poles, trees as fast as you can. The greatest danger is immediately outside of a building and near boundaries. When caught outside in an earthquake it’s wise to stand still on a clear ground, away from any structure that could fall upon you.

Situation 2 – Indoors

If you are caught in an earthquake inside a building, the best option for you would be to find some sturdy and strong table or bed and lie down below it, ducking your head under your arms. Stay put in this position until the tremor ceases or help arrives.

Situation 3 – Driving a Vehicle

If you are driving and sense an earthquake, then move as fast as possible from buildings and other high structures and stay inside the vehicle. Even after earthquake, proceed cautiously and avoid bridges if possible, as the tremors might have damaged them.

Earthquakes are a natural phenomenon and despite our knowledge on them, we cannot stop them from occurring; nevertheless, we can always act wisely when caught in the situation, saving our life as well as life of others.

Earthquakes are caused by the movement or breaking of rocks underneath the surface of earth. Under earth’s surface layers of rocks stay connected to each other. The rocks or plates push each other continuously, but doesn’t move as the forces balance each other.

However, if the rocks break or layers move against each other, seismic waves are produced which reach the surface in form of tremors known as earthquake. Hence earthquake is felt as long as the rocks are rubbing against each other and ceases as soon as the rocks get stuck again. In seismic language, the point immediately below where the rocks break is called the focus and the point immediately above is called the epicenter.

Measurement

The severity of an earthquake is measured in Richter scale. A strong earthquake has a high value on Richter scale while a low earthquake has a lower value.

An earthquake which measures 6 to 7 on Richter scale is potentially damaging to life and property, while the effects of earthquake measuring 4 to 5 on Richter scale could result only in mild tremors or a little structural damage.

There are many effects of earthquake and may include the following; though, they are not limited to the effects mentioned here below-

1) Tremors or Shaking

Shaking of ground is the first effect of earthquake and is also the most damaging one. The severity of shaking; however, depends on the magnitude of earthquake and the distance of the place from the epicenter. An earthquake measuring around 6 or above on Richter scale has an ability to destroy even the most strongest of buildings, depending on their proximity to the epicenter.

2) Ground Rupture

Sometimes, an earthquake measuring high on Richter scale could cause visible rupture in the ground along the fault line. Sometimes, when the earthquake is potentially high on Richter scale, a ground rupture measuring several meters deep and several kilometers long, may result. Such ground ruptures are considerably harmful to significant structures like dams, nuclear power stations and bridges.

Earthquakes can cause forest fires, as tremors force the trees to rub each other, thereby generating heat and sparks. There have been forest fires recorded after earthquakes. Moreover, an earthquake can cause fire in urban areas also, by rupturing electrical lines and damaging electrical protection systems.

4) Landslides

Landslides are the most common aftereffects of earthquake in hilly areas. Shaking of earth displaces the soil on sloppy hills, resulting in a landslide. The landslides sometimes could be potentially more dangerous than the earthquake itself, as they contain debris like trees and rocks, and have a high potential to damage life and property.

Tsunami is the most severe and frightening aftereffect of earthquake. Tsunami is caused when the epicenter of an earthquake lies under the ocean surface. An earthquake in the sea bed results in waves those are not more than a ripple over the epicenter, but as they travel towards the shore, they get bigger, faster and stronger. A wave only measuring 1 meter above the epicenter could measure 100 meters at the shores, resulting in huge loss of life and tremendous damage to the property.

What to do in an Earthquake?

Though the science of studying earthquake has developed significantly, and today it’s possible to forecast an earthquake, even then it might not be possible in every place and situation. Below given are some of the safety precautions you could take when caught in a situation, to save yourself and family from harm.

Situation 1 – Outdoors

If you are outdoors and sense an earthquake, move away from buildings, poles, trees as fast as you can. The greatest danger is immediately outside of a building and near boundaries. When caught outside in an earthquake it’s wise to stand still on a clear ground, away from any structure that could fall upon you.

Situation 2 – Indoors

If you are caught in an earthquake inside a building, the best option for you would be to find some sturdy and strong table or bed and lie down below it, ducking your head under your arms. Stay put in this position until the tremor ceases or help arrives.

Situation 3 – Driving a Vehicle

If you are driving and sense an earthquake, then move as fast as possible from buildings and other high structures and stay inside the vehicle. Even after earthquake, proceed cautiously and avoid bridges if possible, as the tremors might have damaged them.

Earthquakes are a natural phenomenon and despite our knowledge on them, we cannot stop them from occurring; nevertheless, we can always act wisely when caught in the situation, saving our life as well as life of others.

We know what earthquakes are and how they are caused. More details after long research has been found about the earthquakes.

Somewhere under the earth’s crust a strata fractures and crumbles down. As it breaks it strikes against the rocks around it and causes quakes to travel out in all directions. The impact of the explosion radiates waves of shock in all directions. The shock waves strike the earth’s crust and make the earth tremble or quake. The quake lasts only for a few seconds. But within these fleeting moments terrible havoc is caused to life and property.

The quakes differ in intensity; mild shocks pass off lightly. Severe shocks cause great damage and terrible suffering. In 1923, two Japanese cities, Tokyo and Yokohama were struck and about 250,000 people were killed and several crores of rupees worth of properties were destroyed.

If the shock is severe, great changes in the earth’s crust occur. The land on either side moves up or slips down. Portions of sea floor rises up to form dry land-Sea beds rise up making the sea shallow. Tracts of land become suddenly elevated or depressed or even submerged. Rocks and boulders on mountain sides are loosened setting up a land slide. If the quake occurs in the mid sea, great waves are set up. The waves spread destruction along the neighbouring shores.

The spot where the quake occurs and from where shock waves radiate is known as the Epicenter. The shock waves are transmitted over thousands of kilometres all around. Now it is possible to get warnings of an impending shock even some days in advance through, instruments called the Seismograph and seisnnoscope.

The Japanese who often suffer from earthquakes build their houses with light materials like bamboo. They have now evolved shock proof houses also.

The earthquake belt run around the earth along the Pacific Ocean, the Himalayas and its branches, Quetta, Baluchistan, Cutch, Bihar, Assam, Peru, Burma, the East Indies, Japan, New Zealand, Peru and Chile.

No. I do not agree with the statement. When there is a threat to life, the instinct is to run away from the danger area and be safe.

Question 2. Sum up what the lion did to verify the statement of the hare. Answer: The lion guessed what might have happened. But, it wanted to make sure. It asked the other animals to stay there until it came back. It asked the hare to sit on its back and ran towards the palm trees. The lion examined the place and found the bel fruit which had fallen on the palm shrub. It returned to the place where the other animals were waiting. It assured them that there was no reason to fear. It ordered them to go back and lead their normal lives.

Very long ago, near the Western Sea, a hare lived in an earth hole under a small palm shrub at the foot of a bel tree. One day, as he was bringing food to his earth hole, a strange fear entered his mind. He thought what would become of him if the earth were to fall to pieces. At that very moment, a huge ripe bel fruit fell on top of the palm shrub. The hare was sure that the earth was falling to pieces around him. He started running without looking back. Another hare saw him running and asked why he was terrified and running like that. The hare told the second hare that the earth was falling to pieces behind them.

So, the second hare ran after him. Similarly, each and every hare followed suit. Soon a hundred thousand hares were all fleeing after him. Then a deer, a boar, an antelope, a buffalo, a gazelle, a rhinoceros, a tiger and an elephant saw the hare one after the other. After they were told that the earth was falling to pieces, they also ran after him. Gradually the whole race of each species joined the mad race towards safety.

Then a huge lion saw the wild flight of animals. He asked them what the matter was. When he was told that the earth was falling to pieces, he thought, there wasn’t any question of an earthquake. He was pretty sure that the animals had misunderstood some sound they had heard. He decided to find out the truth and save all the animals from destruction.

The lion ran to the foot of the hill, stood before the animals and roared thrice. All the animals were frightened. They huddled up together. The lion asked them the reason for their running. They all said that the earth was falling to pieces. He asked who had seen that. Some said the elephants knew about it. When he asked the elephants, they said the tigers knew it. In this way each and every animal said it had not seen it. Finally, the hare, which started the commotion, was asked. The hare said that it was true. The lion wanted to know where the hare was at that time.

The hare replied that he was resting under a palm leaf at the foot of a bel tree near the Western Sea. The lion guessed what might have happened. A ripe bel fruit had fallen from above on to the palm leaf and made some noise. The hare must have thought that the earth was cracking up and fled. The other animals without bothering to confirm had run after him.

The lion decided to find out. It ordered all the animals to stay where they were until he returned. He asked the hare to sit on his back and lead him to the place. The hare took the lion near the bel tree and showed him the spot. The lion found a ripe bel fruit near the place and there was no sign of an earthquake. The lion and the hare returned to the place where the other animals were waiting. The lion assured them saying that there was neither an earthquake nor any other kind of calamity. It told them not to be afraid of anything but to go to their place and live as they did before. The animals thanked their king and went back to their habitats.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.
